German culture travels to Poland Middle School By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Middle School welcomed Julia Kalscheid on Nov. 23. Kalscheid, a colleague and several students came from Germany to visit schools in the Mahoning Valley area. Kalscheid lives in a small village in Germany where she teaches biology and German. This was her first time coming to Ohio, and she was spending about a week here with a local host family. After her time in Ohio, she and her students will go to New York. Her colleague and students also stayed with host families who were more than happy to take them in. The students in morning science classes welcomed Kalscheid, then she spent the afternoon observing language art classes. Classes in Germany are different than in America. Kalscheid explained that in Germany, the teachers go to the students and teach in different classrooms instead of the students going to different rooms for each class. Having guests from Germany visit Poland gave the students an opportunity to ask questions about Germany. The students
In November, Sharyn Larson celebrated 50 years as a licensed cosmetologist. Her customers would call her a beauty artist – not just a hairdresser. Larson started her training during her junior year at Poland High School through Victor George Beauty Academy, working summers and weekends to get her training and hours. Just five months after graduating from high school in November 1965, she became a licensed cosmetologist. Her first job was with Victor George Beauty Salon in Boardman. She had worked there for about three years when George sold the salon and spent the next nine years working for Eve Beradino at

learned about Germany’s culture, their school system and anything else they were curious about. Kalscheid said she was excited to spend Thanksgiving in America because there is no Thanksgiving in Germany. “Nob o d y k now s how it [Thanksgiving] is, so everyone is very excited,” said Kalscheid. Adjusting to visiting America for only a short time started out a little hard, but Kalscheid said the longer she spends time around people, the more adapted she becomes. Kalscheid said she is ready for “two weeks full of special moments.”
nello, a leading salon owner in the area at his Casal’s Aveda Salon. Recognizing her extraordinary understanding of the profession, hair and make up, he placed her at the Aveda School in Austintown to teach estieology. Larson taught in this program for four years. Larson said she loves working with the aspiring hair designers and mentoring the new professionals at her work. She is now working as the Aveda advisor for the Casal’s Salon in Canfield. Continuing her commitment to the profession, Larson provides outstanding customer service, mentorship to developing designers and brings beauty to every person’s life that she touches.

Iraqi freedom veteran speaks at PSHS By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Seminary High School invited veteran Robin Anderson to their school Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 11. Anderson, an Iraq and Somalia veteran, was the special guest speaker at the morning assembly. The assembly started out with the Poland Middle School band performing, followed by the choir performing the national anthem. One of the students
was able to give an introduction to the other Poland Seminary High School students about Robin Anderson. Anderson soon took the stage and began his speech. Anderson is an alumnus of Salem High School. During his time in high school, he always wanted to go to West Point but enrolled in the military upon graduating. His dreams of going to West Point eventually came true when he attended West Point for graduate school.

The stories being told by Anderson caught the students’ attention very quickly. He spoke about how he was shot twice while on duty. Not all of Anderson’s speech was serious, however, and he spoke about the humorous times he had while he was enlisted. He also spoke about his family and different trips he was able to go on. After Anderson finished his stories, the students and guests were given an opportunity to ask questions. Students posed
a variety of questions, such as “how do soldiers adapt to everyday life after returning from a tour?” to “how does it feel to get shot?” “For our school community to be able to honor those folks that are protecting what we have and what’s most valuable, which is the ability to come to school everyday, to rest our head on a pillow and know we’re safe,” said high school principal Kevin Snyder on what he enjoys most about hosting these assemblies.

The children and their caregivers ended storytime with a craft. The children glued cotton balls around a bear to create a bed so the bear could hibernate in the winter.
Children learn about hibernation By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Four- and 5-year-olds went to the Poland library on Nov. 12 to enjoy Fun Times for 4s and 5s Stor ytime. The storytime, led by libarian Vikki Peck, was themed around hibernating animals with the winter months approaching. After doing the introduction
song, Peck read the book “Hibernation!” by Margaret Hall. The activity that followed the book was about a hedgehog getting ready to hibernate, but several tasks got in the way of her fitting in the bed she made for the winter. The hedgehog and other pieces of the activity were made out of felt that Peck would stick to the flannel story board. As the activity
went along, the children identified the different animals that helped the hedgehog get small enough to fit back into her winter bed. The “Freeze” song was next, which allowed the children to dance and then freeze in as soon as the song said “freeze.” Dancing around to this song See LEARN, Page 5

Colorful beads fuse into new creations By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted an event on Nov. 11 for guests in grades 4-12 to put together Perler bead creations. This was the first time the Poland library hosted the Perler bead event. The librarian hosting the event, Vikki Peck, noted that other libraries had a good outcome with the Perler beads and she thought it would be a good idea to bring the activity to the Poland library. Although there wasn’t a very high turn out at Poland, Peck is hoping once word gets around there will be more children wanting to attend. Having fun with the Perler beads is for children who are older and have more matured motor skills because the beads are so small and a little hard to handle. Participants arranged the beads into different shapes and colorful patterns. After the patterns were created, Peck would then apply the heat to fuse the beads all together and create one solid object for the children to take home that night.
Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci
The different color Perler beads were made available for use by the Poland library. Once participants put together the shapes they wanted, librarian Vikki Peck fused the beads together to create one, colorful decoration.
Children enjoy coming to the library to create different crafts that they might not do at school or at home. The library events prove that the library is for more than just coming to check out books or to study. Crafts can be fun and educa-
tional at the same time. Peck said the Poland library will continue to host different events like this and that there are a lot of holiday-themed activities coming up within the next month for participants of all age groups.
Super night for moms and sons By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mothers and their superhero sons came out to the Lariccia Family Community Center on Nov. 12 to show off their superpowers and enjoy a super supper. Karen McCallum, recreation director, was the one in charge of putting the event together. The sons dressed up as whatever superhero they wanted, and some of the mothers dressed up as well. The mother and son pairs started out the night with a dinner and then went into another room and played at six different stations. This is the fourth year this event has happened. It became so popular that the Mom and Son Date Knight is now a two-night event. There were 50 mother and son pairs that signed up both nights, which is the maximum number of pairs allowed. After the superheroes and their “trainers finished eating, they went into the adjacent room to play games and work on different crafts. The room was considered the training camp to become heroes, and once the boys finished their way through the obstacle course, they got certificates showing that they became heroes. The training camp consisted of a tunnel to crawl through, cor n hole, hu la hoops a nd weightlifting. Batman, Superman and Superwomen made appearances and the mothers and their sons had the opportunity to get their picture taken with the superheroes. Date Knight is a good way for mothers to spend time with their sons. “As a mom myself hanging out with my son is just as fun as hanging out with my daughter, said McCallum. She said watching the interaction between the mothers and their sons is what she enjoys the most. At the end of the night, the superheroes and their trainers shared a dance together, picked up their superhero certificates and the professional pictures that were taken and made their way back home.
