The Canfield Rotary hosted its annual Lighting of the Green, which not only featured the Green lit up with holiday lights, but also a grand entrance by Santa Claus on Dec. 1. Santa Claus arrived in style in a horse-drawn sleigh, with an escort from the Canfield Joint Fire District. In addition to a visit and photos with Santa at the Township Hall, the event featured horsed raw n ca r r iage r ides a nd cookies, cocoa and live music at Piccadilly Parlour. Canfield elementary school choirs performed at the Canfield United Methodist Church, with the Canfield High School One Octave Higher choir and Canfield Village Middle School Canfield Cambiata performing at the Canfield library. Attendees could a lso en-
joy a tour of the War Veterans Museum and the Mahoning Dispatch. Oh WOW Children’s Center was also at the library. Anthony Nacarato, Lighting of the Green chairman, welcomed the crowd, which included Canfield Mayor Bernie Kosar Sr., Canfield Township Trustee Marie Cartwright, City of Canfield Council President Don Dragish Jr., council members Joe LoCicero and John Mor vay a nd newly elected council member Christine Oliver and Pastor Ed Allen of Canfield Christian Church. “Good evening and welcome. This is a fantastic crowd and I am happy to see everyone out here tonight. I have been the chairman of the Rotary‘s Lighting of the Green for 11 years. When we started, we lit one tree and just look at what we have grown this event into. The one reason the event has grown is because of the people
of this community. Our very special local businesses and individuals have helped us grow throughout the years and have helped us raise nearly $15,000 to allow us to extend our lighting to the North end of the Green. WE have added 32 trees to make it even more spectacular this year,” Nacarato said as he welcomed the crowd. Mayor Kosar also welcomed everyone to the event. “I‘d like to ask you to give a round of applause for Anthony. You can just see the passion he puts into this event. Welcome to everyone and thank you for coming out. Be sure to check out the North Green with all the new lights,” Kosar said. Pastor Allen then addressed t he la rge crowd a nd led a prayer. “Light shines around us, through us and within us. This is the season is Advent and the season of Christmas. Take the
time to enjoy it,” Allen said. After a countdown, the Green was glowing and f looded in Christmas lights and decorations. Nacarato and Allen then led everyone in singing “Jingle Bells.” After the lighting, Santa arrived at the Green in a horse drawn carriage with an escort from the Cardinal Joint Fire District fire truck and proceeded to the Township Hall to greet the children and have his picture taken with all of them, much to their delight. Event sponsors included Ba ird Brot hers Fine Ha rdw o o d s , T he Wo o d l a nd s (Austinwoods), Boak and Sons, Kom a r a Je weler s /Kom a r a Family and Key Bank. From the Heart Florist decorated the tree in the gazebo. “Thank you to our local companies who helped make this event such a success,” Nacarato said.

Tom Slaven’s AP Chemistry classroom was chosen based on their proposal to use STEAM skills to address the closure of local lakes due to high E. coli levels. To tackle this project, students will develop a prototype of a treatment system that could reduce the amount compounds making into the lake that are promoting the bacterial growth to unsafe levels. As one of five state finalists in Ohio, Slaven will win a Samsung Chromebook® to use in his classroom. Canfield High School will now have the opportunity to advance in the competition for additional classroom technology prizes. Slaven is currently working on an Activity Plan outlining how his students will execute their project. If he is named the Ohio State Winner in December, Canfield High School will receive a $25,000 Samsung technology package. Slaven is available for interviews about the local issue they’re working to solve and the importance of hands-on STEAM learning. CVMS students honor veterans By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Canfield Village Middle School eighth-grade students honored veterans during the school’s annual Veterans Day Program on Nov. 10. The volunteer students invited local veterans to attend and were responsible for every aspect of the program, from presenting the colors and welcoming their guests and from writing speeches and speaking to creating the PowerPoint presentation for the program. The students also invited their guest speaker, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Russell Conwell Haddon III of the United States Army. The students, under the direction of social studies teachers Mike Kerensky and Jason Jugenheimer, worked several hours after school to organize the program, which carried the theme
Sports and Military Heroes. The students began the program with a welcome to their guests and then the posting of the colors which attendees were asked to stand for and remain standing for the “Pledge of Allegiance.” The “National Anthem” was then performed by the Canfield Village Middle School Canfield Cambiata, under the direction of CVMS music teacher Tom Scurich. An eighth-grade student then gave a speech detailing the history of Veterans Day. Next, the Canfield Cambiata performed “Salute to Armed Forces,” during which veterans in attendance were asked to stand and be recognized when the song from their branch of the military was presented. Each veteran received resounding applause. In introducing Sports and Military Heroes theme, a student

explained that the attributes that are present in sports, such as teamwork and toughness, were also prevalent in the military. In the students’ speeches which followed, the students explained how they believed the attributes connected sports and military service and how they believed each attributed to success in both sports and the military. Each student highlighted an attribute which he or she saw in both sports and the military, including teamwork, toughness, communication, precision, determination and endurance. Teamwork was highlighted in baseball; toughness was highlighted in football; communication was highlighted in basketball; precision was highlighted in hockey; determination was highlighted in competitive swimming and endurance was highlighted in soccer. The final student explained the connection between sports heroes and military heroes. Chief Warrant Officer Haddon was then introduced by his daughter, Briana, a CVMS eighth-grader. Chief Warrant Officer Haddon began his speech by saluting the men and women veterans in attendance. “First, I would like to salute the men and women veterans here today. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak
to you today. It is a privilege for me to honor a very special group called veterans. I couldn’t think of a better place to be today. I would like to explain what it means to me to be a veteran. You can’t tell someone is a veteran just by looking at them. They look like a regular person. They can be a man or a woman and could be tall or short. I believe everyone chosen to wear a uniform is doing something extraordinary. They defend those who cannot defend themselves at all costs,” Chief Warrant Officer Haddon said. To close his address, Chief
Warrant Officer Haddon issued a challenge to the students. “Veterans do not consider themselves a special class of people, but they do appreciate your thanks. I challenge you to thank a veteran today. Thank you on behalf of all veterans,” Chief Warrant Officer Haddon said. Two students then took the podium to read a poem titled “In Your Honor.” A student explained the history and importance of “Taps” while four students took the stage and then played “Taps” to close the program.
