Cooks prep no-knead bread at the Poland library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Participants in the Poland library’s cooking class on Nov. 20 came to the meeting room with cooking bowls ready to prep for no-knead bread. Missy Williams, a Poland librarian, taught the cooking lesson. She provided ingredients and a modified recipe from King Arthur Flour’s website. Williams first demonstrated how to begin the process. Once she had the ingredients in place and added water, she began to whisk the ingredients in the bowl. While she whisked, she gave some helpful tips she has learned over t ime for ma k ing no-k nead bread. Williams had the participants begin to mix their ingredients together after her demonstration. She had extra ingredients and mixing bowls for those
who needed t hem. A s t he cooks placed their ingredients into the bowls, she went around and poured water into each bowl. They covered their bowls with plastic wrap and Williams explained the next steps. She talked about the best ways to cook the bread and how to add steam in a stove. North Elementar y School hosted a “Mommy and Me“ class on Nov. 9 to get young children ready for preschool. Tiffany Vesey ran the program in a classroom in the elementary school. She gave them time to play, read stories and craft. They began playing in the little play area with a play set and plastic balls. Then, they gathered in a circle to listen to Vesey read them “The Big Leaf Pile“ by Norman Bridwell. The book is a part of Bridwell’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog“ book series. Vesey pulled out a box of fake leaves after the story. The children played with the leaves and buried each other in them. They threw the leaves in the air and made leaf piles. The children helped Vesey to put all the loose leaves back in the box after they played. Then, they did their first craft, where they made a wreath of leaves. Vesey supplied the students with glue, leaves made of construction paper and a circle to glue the leaves on. The group played a game after the craft. Vesey made an outline of a tree on the floor using tape. She placed apples on different ends of the tree. The children walked along the tape and collected the apples.

Children and parents dressed as princesses and superheroes met in the large meeting room at the library for french toast sticks, bacon, yogurt, cupcakes and drinks for breakfast. Deborah Liptak, Development Director with the PLYMC, organized the event and filled the event with entertainment. She had two story times, community volunteers dressed as superheroes and a horse-drawn carriage. The PLYMC teamed up with Disney on Ice for the event. Everyone registered for the event received tickets for Disney on Ice at the Covelli Center. Upon entering the library, the families donated a book to the PLYMC’s children’s program. They could eat breakfast or play around the room. The volunteers set up different castles made of fabric throughout the room that the children could crawl inside. They could take pictures with volunteers dressed as superheroes. The library also gave the families Mickey Mouse ears. Drag racer Ryan Martino read two books to start story time. He read “Race Car Count“ by Rebecca Dotlich and then “Good Night, Race Cars“ by Adam Gamble. Martino involves himself heavily with the PLYMC, having done an event in Boardman just two months prior to this one. His efforts with library has garnered attention nationally with other racers looking to help their libraries. Michelle Zidian, a library volunteer, read “101 Dalmatians“ while dressed as Cruella de Vil, the antagonist of the book, after Martino’s readings. Children sat on the floor between the tables and the readers for the story times. The horse-drawn carriage arrived shortly after the story time. Ohio Association of Magistrates administrator, Mark Huberman, presented Judge Anthony D’Apolito with the 2017 Judicial Award.
Judge receives judicial award At the 2017 Fall Conference of the Ohio Association of Magistrates on Sept. 29, Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony D’Apolito was one of three former magistrates, now judges, to receive the prestigious OAM Judicial Award for 2017. The award, which is presented annually to no more than three judges in the State of Ohio, recognizes magistrates who have gone on to be elected judges and who continue to be strongly supportive of the cause of magistrates and judicial education. Judge D’Apolito previously served more than 10 years as a Magistrate and Court Ad-
ministrator of the Mahoning County Juvenile Court before being elected to the bench in November 2017. The award was presented to Judge D’Apolito by OAM Administrator Mark Huberman, himself a former magistrate of both the Mahoning County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. The other recipients of the 2017 Judicial Award were Judge Penelope Cunningham of the First District Court of Appeals and Judge Tonya Jones of the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court. The OAM represents more than 600 Magistrates in the State of Ohio and is the primary provider of their continuing education.

Union Students deliver letters to fire department

Poland Union Elementary School students walked to the Village Fire Department on South Main Street on Oct. 27 to hand deliver letters to the firefighters. The students throughout the school wrote more than 200 letters to the fire department to thank them for their service. A group of 12 randomly selected students walked to the fire station to deliver the letters and talk to the firefighters. Cocca’s Pizza provided pizza and drinks to the students. The school works w ith the pizza company on a variety of events. The students met volunteer firemen Ian Harker and Jake Ezzo, firefighter and Poland trustee Bob Lidle and Fire Prevention Officer Bill O’Hara. The firemen spoke to the students about volunteering and fighting fires. They sat with the children as they all ate. After eating, the fire department took them downstairs to see the fire trucks and equipment. The students’ families joined them as they got downstairs and toured the station
Union students look to the best part of themselves by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Second-grade students at Poland Union Elementary participated in a project called “The Best Part of Me“ during October. The teachers incorporated the project in their classroom to implement skills they have already worked on, such as external characteristics in characters and paragraph writing. The students focused on a body part on their body, an external characteristic, of themselves that they like most and wrote four reasons about why they like the body part and what it brings to their lives. One student wrote that he liked his arms best because he could pick things up and hug with them. Another student said she liked her legs best because they help her run fast in sports. The project comes from
Wendy Ewald’s 2002 book, “The Best Part of Me: Children Talk About Their Bodies in Pictures and Words.“ The book features examples of what other students wrote and pictures of the students. Alyssa Patrick, a second-grade teacher, said the teachers use the project to get the students to work on their writing skills, think about character traits and look for good in themselves. The activity should be a feel-good project. The students learned a full writing process with this project. They first began by creating story web. Then, they wrote their first draft of their paragraph. Finally, they made their final draft of the paragraph. The second-grade teachers hung the finished paragraphs with pictures of the students in the halls of the school. The teachers used the project for the first time last year.
