Family events ease holiday stress By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor

The holiday season is just around the corner and before you know it, the kids will be out of school. I think we all remember what it was like when those first few days of winter break struck - the excitement of the upcoming holiday festivities, the thrill of being out of school for nearly two whole weeks! As parents, grandparents or caregivers in general, the surplus of energy that this anticipation can bring often causes stress and headaches that even a good dose of holiday cheer can’t completely cure. Luckily, there are more than a few activities around the area that can entertain the whole family or just the young ones on their own. Mill Creek Parks is offering holiday family fun throughout the month. One event that Neighbors has our eyes on is Holiday Nature Crafts on Dec. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Pioneer Pavilion. Please note that this event is for children ages 7 and up only, and does include a fee of $7 for residents and $10 for nonresidents. If you are planning on attending, you must register and pay at Ford Nature Center by Dec. 15. Throughout the month, Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Winter Celebration: The Forest. The gardens will be staying open late on Saturdays and Sundays for the Electric Garden - a festive holiday display that fills the gardens with thousands of lights. The branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will also offer some

g reat hol iday prog r a m s, i ncluding a Holiday Movie Matinee at the Austintown branch on Dec. 19 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The movie will be rated PG WRIGHT or G and the entire family is invited to attend. Children under 7-years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The Austintown library will also be the location of the Noon Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 30 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend this event, which will feature music, dancing, a story, crafts, light refreshments and a ball drop. Several locations throughout the area will also host holiday light displays throughout December. This list is solely made of displays in the Neighbors areas and more locations may be added at a later time. Locations include: • “Austintown Christmas” at 3810 Dunbar Street in Austintown • “Winter Wonderland” at 3946 Montereale Dr. in Canfield • “Canfield Christmas Lights” at 333 Fairview Ave. in Canfield • “The Boyd Family Christmas Display” at 5515 West Boulevard in Boardman • “Holidays with the Hughes” at 7433 Ranier Trail in Boardman • “Boardman Park Holiday Lights” at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman More information on these and other events can be found online at www.libraryvisit.org and www. millcreekmetroparks.org.

Members of the Rotary Club of Austintown recently joined other Rotary Clubs and interested friends to help the community. As a part of Operation Warm, six local clubs with help from the Salvation Army and others distributed winter coats to hundreds of children in Mahoning County. This is a continuing project offering new coats in a variety of colors for children in need. Austintown Rotary also manned the Salvation Army Kettle at WalMart on Dec. 5. Pictured ringing the bell for the Salvation Army are Rich Begalla (left) and Gary Reel.

Gold coins appear in red kettles During the Red Kettle Campaign, anonymous donors sporadically and randomly put gold coins in Salvation Army red kettles around the country. This trend became a reality for The Salvation Army of Mahoning County, as the organization discovered two 1 ounce fine gold coins in two of its kettles. The gold coins were dropped in kettles at the Walmart Store in Austintown and Sparkle Super-

This is the fourth year in a row that The Salvation Army has discovered gold coins in its kettles around the county. The anonymous donor or donors did not leave any information. The Red Kettle Campaign is the

biggest fundraising effort undertaken by The Salvation Army in Mahoning County each year. The campaign has a goal of $350,000. Funds raised at the kettles are used locally to provide Christmas assistance, emergency aid, food, clothing, social services, recreational programs, seniors program and essential services to the less fortunate year round. As the night wound down, the sons and their mothers got together for a “trainer and “superhero dance. The sons were able to enjoy a special dance with their mothers after running around the training camp obstacle course.

Super night for moms and sons By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mothers and their superhero sons came out to the Lariccia Family Community Center on Nov. 12 to show off their superpowers and enjoy a super supper. Karen McCallum, recreation director, was the one in charge of putting the event together. The sons dressed up as whatever superhero they wanted, and some of the mothers dressed up as well. The mother and son pairs started out the night with a dinner and then went into another room and played at six different stations. This is the fourth year this event has happened. It became so popular that the Mom and Son Date Knight is now a

two-night event. There were 50 mother and son pairs that signed up both nights, which is the maximum number of pairs allowed. After the superheroes and their “trainers finished eating, they went into the adjacent room to play games and work on different crafts. The room was considered the training camp to become heroes, and once the boys finished their way through the obstacle course, they got certificates showing that they became heroes. The training camp consisted of a tunnel to crawl through, cor n hole, hu la hoops a nd weightlifting. Batman, Superman and Superwomen made appearances

Austintown library helps create new artists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library hosted its monthly Art with Andrea program on Nov. 19. Austintown librarian, Andrea Robinson, helps a class of teens and adults learn how to draw and work on their drawing skills. Each month the participants spend an hour and a half working on a drawing of a still image brought in by Robinson. This month, a penguin standing on a book was the object for the participants to sketch. “This is a good place to just come practice. So if people are

interested in drawing, they can just come and do whatever they want,” said Robinson. She shows those who attend her process of how she draws these different objects and gives advice to help progress their drawing abilities. “It’s cool. I like having a oneon-one art instruction,” said Diane, one of the participants. Diane went on to say that its like getting a free art lesson once a month. She said that it’s very hands on and people are willing to help each other out. Robinson walked around to try to get the perspective of the members to help them draw the

object. “The first rule, you have to draw only what you see, not what you think,” Robinson said. Robinson noted that when many people draw, they try to sketch out what they think should be there. As an example, she held out her hand and explained that when people looked at it, they only saw her hand, but they would try and draw the arm as well because they think it belongs. Robinson will host another art class in December. She hopes many guests attend so she can help them find a new hobby they will enjoy.

Blood drive helps community By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library hosted a blood drive in partnership with the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on Nov. 24. The Red Cross set up their stations in the large meeting room at the Austintown library. Appointments were scheduled throughout the day from 1 p.m.

until 6 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of American Red Cross hosts several blood drives at the different libraries in Mahoning County. The blood donations help out people in the community and in St. Elizabeth Hospital. There were water and snacks available for those who donated before and after their donation appointment. Several stations were set up to

accompany the volunteers while they donated blood. The professionals working the blood drive guided the volunteers through each step of the donation. They did their best to make the situation relaxing for those who were nervous. For every one person who donates blood at this and other area blood drives, help can be given to up to three people in need.

The first run was a six minute and under mile run, the second was a 200-meter run and the third was the more than six minute run and walk. The 200-meter run was for two AustintownFitch Cross Country throwers, since they don’t run. The throwers, Logan and Joe, ran 200-meters carrying another person on their back the entire time. Four of the students participating in the last race each wrote a letter spelling out “SHU!” on their stomachs to

show their support. There was also a concession stand with free food and drinks available and any donation would go to Shushok. A local band, Northern Whale, set up a table to sell their CDs and the money raised from that also went to Shushok. More than $2,500 was raised at the event. If Cremation is your choice...
