Family events ease holiday stress By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor
The holiday season is just around the corner and before you know it, the kids will be out of school. I think we all remember what it was like when those first few days of winter break struck - the excitement of the upcoming holiday festivities, the thrill of being out of school for nearly two whole weeks! As parents, grandparents or caregivers in general, the surplus of energy that this anticipation can bring often causes stress and headaches that even a good dose of holiday cheer can’t completely cure. Luckily, there are more than a few activities around the area that can entertain the whole family or just the young ones on their own. Mill Creek Parks is offering holiday family fun throughout the month. One event that Neighbors has our eyes on is Holiday Nature Crafts on Dec. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Pioneer Pavilion. Please note that this event is for children ages 7 and up only, and does include a fee of $7 for residents and $10 for nonresidents. If you are planning on attending, you must register and pay at Ford Nature Center by Dec. 15. Throughout the month, Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Winter Celebration: The Forest. The gardens will be staying open late on Saturdays and Sundays for the Electric Garden - a festive holiday display that fills the gardens with thousands of lights. The branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will also offer some
g reat hol iday prog r a m s, i ncluding a Holiday Movie Matinee at the Austintown branch on Dec. 19 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The movie will be rated PG WRIGHT or G and the entire family is invited to attend. Children under 7-years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The Austintown library will also be the location of the Noon Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 30 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend this event, which will feature music, dancing, a story, crafts, light refreshments and a ball drop. Several locations throughout the area will also host holiday light displays throughout December. This list is solely made of displays in the Neighbors areas and more locations may be added at a later time. Locations include: • “Austintown Christmas” at 3810 Dunbar Street in Austintown • “Winter Wonderland” at 3946 Montereale Dr. in Canfield • “Canfield Christmas Lights” at 333 Fairview Ave. in Canfield • “The Boyd Family Christmas Display” at 5515 West Boulevard in Boardman • “Holidays with the Hughes” at 7433 Ranier Trail in Boardman • “Boardman Park Holiday Lights” at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman More information on these and other events can be found online at www.libraryvisit.org and www. millcreekmetroparks.org.

Super night for moms and sons By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mothers and their superhero sons came out to the Lariccia Family Community Center on Nov. 12 to show off their superpowers and enjoy a super supper. Karen McCallum, recreation director, was the one in charge of putting the event together. The sons dressed up as whatever superhero they wanted, and some of the mothers dressed up as well. The mother and son pairs started out the night with a dinner and then went into another room and played at six different stations. This is the fourth year this event has happened. It became so popular that the Mom and Son Date Knight is now a two-night event. There were 50 mother and son pairs that signed up both nights, which is the maximum number of pairs allowed. After the superheroes and their “trainers” finished eating, they went into the adjacent room to play games and work on different crafts. The room was considered the training camp to become heroes, and once the boys finished their way through the obstacle course, they got certificates showing that they became Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci heroes. Greggory Hanmy, dressed as Iron Man, played cornhole at the Date Knight on Nov. 12. Greggory was Iron Man for Halloween, so the Date Knight was a perfect time for him to reuse his costume and train to become a superhero.

acquire similar homes that were originally taken over by the Mahoning County Land Bank. The township then “banks” the property until a suitable use is found for it. For example, adjacent property owners may be encouraged to purchase the vacant property, which is made available at a fair-market value. The goal is to protect residents who live near the dangerous properties and also to prevent ill-fitting new developments that can ruin home values in a neighborhood. An added benefit is that, when the properties are purchased, they can be returned to township tax rolls. The township has demolished approximately 20 such houses since 2013, and the demolition
program is expected to continue at a rate of about six additional structures per year. At the open house, Zoning Department officials displayed newly designed signs that will used to identify properties acquired by the Land Bank, and demonstrated a new section on the township website (www. Details and necessary forms will be available on the website, or the Zoning Department may be contacted for more information at 330-726-4181.

She said watching the interaction between the mothers and their sons is what she enjoys the most. Township residents learned about the Boardman Township Land Bank, as well as other initiatives, during the Boardman Zoning Department’s Open House, which took place at the Township offices on Nov. 10. Sarah Gartland, zoning inspector, and Marilyn Kenner, P.E., assistant zoning inspector, were on hand to explain the Land Bank and how it fits into The New Boardman Land Plan, which is designed to stabilize neighborhoods in the township. Under the Land Bank plan, the township acquires condemned or tax-delinquent properties and demolishes the houses on those properties, which are often dilapidated and in dangerous condition. Every month the Boardman library hosts the All About Yarn program. Karen Saunders, a Boardman librarian, oversaw the program on Nov. 20. Guests join the events and bring any projects they may be working on to continue working on during the meeting time. Crocheting and knitting seem to be the two most poplar techniques. Those who attend the event are always open to sharing their ideas with one another. Participants share different patterns, books and websites that contain various techniques for knitting and crocheting. New tips and tricks are learned at every meeting, which makes for a new experience each time. One woman attending taught the others a stitch that she used to create an attention-grabbing blanket. “It’s just so relaxing. It always makes me relax when I do it, said Ann, one of the guests. Celebrating 50 years in cosmetology In November, Sharyn Larson celebrated 50 years as a licensed cosmetologist. Her customers would call her a beauty artist – not just a hairdresser. Larson started her training during her junior year at Poland High School through Victor George Beauty Academy, working summers and weekends to get her training and hours. Just five months after graduating from high school in November 1965, she became a licensed cosmetologist. Her first job was with Victor George Beauty Salon in Boardman. She had worked there for about three years when George sold the salon and spent the next nine years working for Eve Beradino at Eve’s Beauty Salon, also in Boardman. In September 1981, she opened her own salon, Sharyns with a Y, in Poland Town One If Cremation is your choice...

She was an entrepreneurial salon owner in those days, introducing a dedicated nail artist, the latest makeup and skin care trends, and hosted a hair Cut-A-Thon to raise money for the then Tod’s Children’s Hospital. Also, as a tribute to her mentor and first boss, Victor George, she employed his grandaughter, Kelly, in her salon. In July 1999, Larson’s salon had a devastating fire that destroyed it. That did not stop the commitment of this dedicated hair professional. She went on to be employed by Tom Chiarnello, a leading salon owner in the area at his Casal’s Aveda Salon. Recognizing her extraordinary understanding of the profession, hair and make up, he placed her at the Aveda School in Austintown to teach estieology. Larson taught in this program for four years. La rson sa id she loves working with the aspiring hair designers and mentoring the new professionals at her work. She is now working as the Aveda advisor for the Casal’s Salon in Canfield. Continuing her commitment to the profession, Larson provides outstanding customer service, mentorship to developing designers and brings beauty to every person’s life that she touches.

Monster book fair is a scary-good time By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Stadium Drive Elementary School had their biggest book fair of the year for students the weeks of Nov. 9-20. Scholastic and two other charities match what money the students raise while purchasing the books and other items at the book fair. Stadium Drive libra ria n, Tracy Marsco, loves to decorate for the book fairs to get the students excited to come in and see everything. This year she made the theme monsters. When the students walked through the halls to the library, they followed footsteps and saw a giant monster when they got to library doors. It was like the students walked through the monster’s mouth to get in the library. “I always theme it because it’s more fun for the students. I want to get them excited about reading,” said Marsco. The students went to the library everyday for a week during their 40-minute library period to go pick out books, make monster bookmarks and pick out other books to read during their library period. Marsco said the school schedules book fair visits during the students’ library period so learning isn’t affected. The book fair was decorated

with different looking monsters. She had a monster face with the mouth open so the students could take pictures inside a monster’s mouth. Marsco cut other monsters out of cardboard, painted them and decorated them with colorful clothes.
The students a lways buy books first and if they have any change left over, they then pick out different items to go with their books. Many of the girls picked out plastic phones and pretended to take pictures of each other inside the monster face.
