Family events ease holiday stress By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor

The holiday season is just around the corner and before you know it, the kids will be out of school. I think we all remember what it was like when those first few days of winter break struck - the excitement of the upcoming holiday festivities, the thrill of being out of school for nearly two whole weeks! As parents, grandparents or caregivers in general, the surplus of energy that this anticipation can bring often causes stress and headaches that even a good dose of holiday cheer can’t completely cure. Luckily, there are more than a few activities around the area that can entertain the whole family or just the young ones on their own. Mill Creek Parks is offering holiday family fun throughout the month. One event that Neighbors has our eyes on is Holiday Nature Crafts on Dec. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Pioneer Pavilion. Please note that this event is for children ages 7 and up only, and does include a fee of $7 for residents and $10 for nonresidents. If you are planning on attending, you must register and pay at Ford Nature Center by Dec. 15. Throughout the month, Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Winter Celebration: The Forest. The gardens will be staying open late on Saturdays and Sundays for the Electric Garden - a festive holiday display that fills the gardens with thousands of lights. The branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will also offer some

g reat hol iday prog r a m s, i ncluding a Holiday Movie Matinee at the Austintown branch on Dec. 19 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The movie will be rated PG WRIGHT or G and the entire family is invited to attend. Children under 7-years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The Austintown library will also be the location of the Noon Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 30 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend this event, which will feature music, dancing, a story, crafts, light refreshments and a ball drop. Several locations throughout the area will also host holiday light displays throughout December. This list is solely made of displays in the Neighbors areas and more locations may be added at a later time. Locations include: • “Austintown Christmas” at 3810 Dunbar Street in Austintown • “Winter Wonderland” at 3946 Montereale Dr. in Canfield • “Canfield Christmas Lights” at 333 Fairview Ave. in Canfield • “The Boyd Family Christmas Display” at 5515 West Boulevard in Boardman • “Holidays with the Hughes” at 7433 Ranier Trail in Boardman • “Boardman Park Holiday Lights” at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman More information on these and other events can be found online at www.libraryvisit.org and www. millcreekmetroparks.org.

Concert of Giving to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band and Stambaugh Chorus will host the fifth annual Holiday Concert of Giving to raise money to feed hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties on Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. at Stambaugh Audi-

torium. Admission is a cash donation to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. You can also make an additional donation in the upper lobby to win a chance to conduct “Sleigh Ride” on stage with the Youngstown Area Community Concert Band. For every $1 given at the concert, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to families that need it most this holiday season. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, provides food to those in need in the tri-county area through 148 programs provided by hungerrelief organizations, which include church pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs. In 2014, the Food Bank distributed 9.5 million pounds of food, including 2 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables in the tri-county area. For more information on the Food Bank, visit www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest. org or call 330-792-5522.

C.H. students get creative with pumpkins By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

C.H. Campbell Elementary School students had the opportunity to get creative this Halloween for the school’s PTO annual pumpkin decorating contest. With no limitations on how they could decorate their pumpkins, the students went all out decorating their pumpkins at home and then brought them to school to be displayed. The pumpkins could not be carved so the students used paint, glitter, ribbons, bows, puff balls and several other art elements and props. Among the variety of pump-

kins on display were ice cream treats, snowmen, vampires, Minions, superheroes, witches, cupcakes, footballs, baseballs, Star Wars, Angry Birds, robots, penguins, bubble gum machines, Raggedy Ann and Ohio State, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers themed pumpkins. Every pumpkin entry received an award, such as Angriest Angry Bird, Most Marvelous Minion, Most Magical, Prettiest in Pink, Most Yummy Treat, Most Sticky Sweet, Best Raggedy Ann Pumpkin and Best Eyebrows. The induction ceremony occurs ever y November for the students who were given an invitation in September. Family and friends of the students being inducted were able to attend the ceremony at St. Christine. After the students received their pins and certifications, they were able to enjoy snacks and refreshments with their families and faculty of the school. “This is a nice way to recog nize t he top schola rs in class and to see their achievements,” said Toman. Mothers and their superhero sons came out to the Lariccia Family Community Center on Nov. 12 to show off their superpowers and enjoy a super supper. Karen McCallum, recreation director, was the one in charge of putting the event together. The sons dressed up as whatever superhero they wanted, and some of the mothers dressed up as well. The mother and son pairs started out the night with a dinner and then went into another room and played at six different stations. This is the fourth year this event has happened. It became so popular that the Mom and Son Date Knight is now a two-night event. There were 50 mother and son pairs that signed up both nights, which is the maximum number of pairs allowed. After the superheroes and their “trainers” finished eating, they went into the adjacent room to play games and work on different crafts. The room was considered the training camp to become heroes, and once the boys finished their way through the obstacle course, they got certificates showing that they became heroes. The training camp consisted of a tunnel to crawl through, cor n hole, hu la hoops a nd weightlifting. Batman, Superman and Superwomen made appearances and the mothers and their sons had the opportunity to get their picture taken with the superheroes. Date Knight is a good way for mothers to spend time with their sons. “As a mom myself hanging out with my son is just as fun as hanging out with my daughter,” said McCallum. She said watching the interaction between the mothers and their sons is what she enjoys the most. At the end of the night, the superheroes and their trainers shared a dance together, picked up their superhero certificates and the professional pictures that were taken and made their way back home.

First Night Canfield awards button design to Canfield student First Night Canfield named Emily Dunlap, a ninth-grade Canfield resident, the winner of the button design contest for First Night Canfield 2016. First Night Canfield offers a $300 award annually to the designer for their button. The painting will be featured on this year’s button, which will be sold to gain admission into all venues for First Night Canfield. The board of directors and founders of First Night Canfield have always hoped to use First Night Canfield as a platform to help young artists get their start on a bright future. This year, the teen venue at Rush Church in Canfield is hoping to put many teen submitted art pieces on display. Dunlap resides in Canfield with her mother, father, older brother and sister. She has many interests outside of art. She is currently studying for her ballet exams, as she studies the Cecchetti style of ballet at Kathi’s Dance and Gym Center.

Two Canfield graduates, Daniel Jenkins and Adam Bouch, joined other Duquesne University, Mylan School of Pharmacy students in Washington D.C. to meet and discuss a bill that would give pharmacists providor status with congressmen and senators. They thanked Congressman Bill Johnson for being a co-sponsor of this bill. Having provider status will allow pharmacists to better serve the medical needs of underserved patients to work with them to prevent critical medical events from occurring by addressing medical problems in advance. The medical community believe that prevention of escalating conditions is critical in controlling healthcare costs.
