Austintown Elementary School invited Marissa Dubina to the school to reward classes for donating during their Falcon Outreach program. The top three classes that donated the most from each grade level got to go to Dubina’s large assembly, and the classroom that donated the most overall got their own special assembly.

Ten classrooms at Austintown Elementary School received a special assembly from Realm of the Reptile on Dec. 1. The school’s PTA awarded the classrooms with the assembly for raising the most amount of
money during the Falcon Outreach program. The top three classes of each grade, kindergarten through second grade, got an assembly, and the classroom that raised the most total money overall, Mrs. Cramer’s first-grade class, received an assembly by themselves. The PTA offers the Falcon
Outreach program every year. The program raised $6,250 overall this year, which went toward food vouchers. Those vouchers then went to families in need throughout the Austintown community during the Thanksgiving break. “We always look to bring in things for the kids that is fun
and educational,“ Bethany Martinez, the president of the AES PTA, said. Marissa Dubina, owner of Realm of the Reptile, brought numerous reptiles to show to the students. For the large assembly, she brought the animals See REPTILES, Page 4

Dubina runs Realm of the Reptile by herself. She performs at schools, parties, clubs and churches. The school has brought her in to present the last three school years. Recently, she was on the Discovery Channel. She began doing presentations at the age of twelve. She had a passion for animals at a young age, but with her brother’s allergies, she could only have reptiles, which began her love of reptiles. She continued to learn and present. She owns all of the animals that she brought to the school.

Dubina received audible sounds of excitement and surprise every time she revealed a different reptile. Some students even screamed when she brought out some animals, such as the snakes. After her presentation, she allowed the students to walk up and pet the bearded dragon, olive python and tortoise. Martinez and other members of the PTA helped hold the animals while the students came up.

eas where the school is already improving. Of the criteria, the school has improved in three areas and stayed the same in the rest. Both superintendents spoke about their pride in moving the grade in area of “progress.“ Progress marks the value of academic growth. Previously, the school had a D in progress, but the district received an A this year. “I think this one is the true indicator of how great our teachers are,“ said Colaluca of achieving great strides in the area of “progress.“ Colaluca plans to have a Coffee and Conversation event once every two months. Colaluca invites
and wants parents and the community to come to the events to have an open dialogue about the schools. These events are streamed on Facebook Live and DRUND Live. The Facebook Live video remains on the “Austintown Local Schools” Facebook page after the event. ACTV also replays the conversation. Each event covers a new topic. In September, Colaluca discussed open enrollment with parents at Eat’n Park. Next month, he plans to talk about the schools’ staffing and how they employ about 900 people throughout the district, including 325 teachers and 260 support staff.

Austintown superintendent Vincent Colaluca sat at Perkins to talk about academics on Nov. 8 as a part of Austintown’s Coffee and Conversation with the Superintendent event. Colaluca, joined with assistant superintendent Jeremy Batchelor, discussed some academic benchmarks. They specifically addressed the Ohio School Report Card, an initiative the state does to grade how well schools perform throughout the school year. Colaluca brought up a number of strategies the schools have begun to implement in the classrooms, such as the use of Google Chromebooks and the instruction of the Bridges math program. He then gave the floor to Batchelor to discuss the Ohio School Report Card. Batchelor began by explaining what the state looks for and how they assess the schools. He explained that the state uses six criteria, “achievement,” “gap closing,” “K-3 literacy,” “progress,” “graduation rate” and “prepared for success.” The Report Card uses a grading scale from A-F, with a C being the benchmark that schools should look to hit. Both Colaluca and Batchelor admitted that the school has areas where it needs to improve, but they also pointed out ar-

Families came to the library to watch the film “Born in China.” The movie followed the lives of three groups of animals, pandas, snow leopards and golden monkeys.
The Austintown library shows family-friendly films By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Children went to the Austintown library on Nov.7 for a movie night in the large meeting room. Librarian Allison Graf organized the event. The meeting room has a projector for events like these. Graf set up the movie on the projector and moved the tables and chairs to face the screen. The group of children at the event watched Disneynature’s “Born in China.“ Disneynature, a branch of Walt Disney Studios, focuses on nature films, such as “Earth.“ “Born in
China“ follows three groups of animals during their life in China. The movie shows the lives of pandas, snow leopards and golden monkeys. John Krasinski narrates the film. Families watched the nature movie and brought snacks and drinks. The library promotes families bringing popcorn and a drink for these events. Some children had popcorn while others brought candy. The library hosts a movie night once every month. All films they watch have a “G“ or “PG“ rating and have recently been released. For example, “Born in China“ came out Apr. 21, 2017.
