BCIS takes part in National Hour of Code Week By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Boardman Center Intermediate School brought in speakers on Dec. 4 and 6 and had an hour of code each day of that week for National Hour of Code Week from Dec. 4-8. Carrie Hurd, the school’s computer technology teacher, had the fifth- and sixth-grade stu-
dents work on coding through Code.org each day during the week. Hurd brought in Lisa Smith and Becky Sabino from ACCESS to speak to the students about creating code and working in the technology field. Hurd pulled the Google start page on her browser to introduce code to the students. She told them that every web page is designed using a series of
numbers, letters and symbols. Then, she showed the students the Developer Tools section in the Chrome browser that shows the code used to make the web page. They went to http://w w w. code.org to work on coding. Instead of making direct code, the site used a game using blocks of code to teach the students the fundamentals of coding. The
game used Angry Birds mascots. They had to use a series of command to move the bird across the screen to win a level. T he st udent s watched a video welcoming them to the world of code and introducing the game they would play and how that relates to coding. See CODING, Page 4
Blood pressure screening at the library The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be at the Boardman library on Jan. 2 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. with blood pressure screenings.
Holiday library closings announced All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Dec. 30, 31 and Jan. 1, for the New Year holiday, and on Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The school invited speakers Smith and Sabino to talk to the students on Monday and Wednesday of the week. The two work at ACCESS, a database service that schools t hroughout Ma honing a nd Colu mbia na cou nt ies use. Smith is the executive director at ACCESS, while Sabino works as the database administrator. They explained to the students that much of what they do every day is a form of coding. Smith said that “coding is just a set of instruction.” She went on to say that the students who play music or participate in sports follow codes every day, as they have to follow a set of
instruction. The speakers said that anyone can learn to code, furthering the point by noting that they know of programs designed to teach kindergartners how to code. They said that those looking to enter the field need to have good problem-solving skills, strong abilities in math and be able to work both independently and as a part of a team. The students in the school will go on to learn more advanced coding in seventh and eighth grade at the junior high school. They will have the option to pursue further education in coding and computer science through courses offered at the high school.

The Stadium Drive Elementary School students surpassed the goal set by the school PTA. To celebrate, the school had an assembly in which they slimed Prinicpal Michael Zoccali.
Students observe Red Ribbon Week at Stadium By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Stadium Drive Elementary discussed drug-free lifestyles and right choices throughout the week of Oct. 30 through Nov. 3 as a part of their Red Ribbon Week. The Stadium Drive PTA organized most of the week’s activities for Red Ribbon Week, a national effort to prevent drug use among students. Principal Michael Zoccali said the school uses the week as “a way to have fun and show kids their decisions are important.“ He said that the school talks about making right choices every day, but they stress the importance of the choices during the week. He spoke about choices over the loudspeaker each morning during the week. The teachers talk to the students about making correct decisions within and outside of the classroom. The PTA created a dress theme for each day of the week for the students. On Monday, they celebrated the beginning of Red Ribbon Week by wearing red. The students came to school in Halloween colors on Tuesday. They relaxed in their pajamas on Wednesday. The students wore crazy socks on Thursday. The school dressed in the attire of their favorite sports team to end the week. The teachers in the school decorated their doors for a con-
test put on by the PTA. The organization gave the teachers a key theme to work with to represent to the students that “the future is key.“ The school had an assembly on Friday to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Each student received a drug-free certificate from the Boardman Police Department.
The school also tied in their PTA-sponsored read-athon during the assembly. Students logged their time reading during a two week span. The school combined for 100,000 minutes, which exceeded the PTA’s goal. As a reward, the students who had the most time spent reading got to slime Zoccali.

in history. The group thought about this idea for awhile. They talked about how both women and African Americans were treated during this time. The women in the group discussed some of the language others use to when talking to them. Yingling brought out different quotes from the book and asked different questions about the book to keep the conversation moving. At the end of the discussion on the story, Yingling began talking about “Before the Fall“ by Noah Hawley, the
book for next month’s discussion. The other members talked about the other books they have read recently. At the end of each session, Yingling hands the group two sheets of papers. One of the sheets lists the book recommendations that members have made during the session. The other sheet has a selected list of books that had been published that month. The book club meets the second Monday of each month at the Boardman library. Their session lasts from 7-8 p.m.
Eagle Scout awarded Neighbors | Submitted
Benjamin Burkey, of Boy Scout Troop 60, was awarded with the Eagle Scout Award on Nov 26 at Westminster Presbyterian Church for a project that benefits St. Luke’s Catholic Church. With the assistance of several scouts and families, Burkey designed and built an entirely new outdoor worship space that the church can use for services. Burkey accomplished his goal with a total of 228.5 man-hours spent and raised enough funds to pay for the project and make a $4,500 monetary gift to Saint Luke’s Catholic Church, which was left over after the project’s necessary expenses had been paid for. Burkey has earned 36 Merit Badges, and special Scout Awards include Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius XII Catholic Religious Awards and Fifth Year Pipestone at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation Summer Camp. Special Scout Activities include National Youth Leadership Training, Brotherhood member in the Oder of the ArrowScouting’s National Honor Society in Marnoc Lodge 151 and Burkey has attended the Order of the Arrow Section C-4A Conclave.

T he Boa rd ma n l ibra r y ’s Reader’s Choice Book Club met on Nov. 13 to discuss “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race“ by Margot Lee Shetterly. L ibra r ia n Joh n Y i ng l i ng led the group discussion. He opened the discussion about surprises in the book. From there, the discussion grew organically. The nonfiction story explains the lives of brilliant AfricanAmerican women who worked as computers during the space race between the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. in the 60s. Each person in the group had something to say about the book. The discussion often lifted from the written word to the members’ lives. Many of the book club members had lived through the 60s or had been born around that time, so their elaborations usually included details from what they remember during that time. Yingling quoted Harry S. Truman saying, “The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know,“ in order to kick off a discussion about how many important stories, like this one, have been forgotten
