Poland Township lights Christmas tree By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Poland Junior Women’s Club had the ninth annual Lighting of the Village at Poland Town Hall on Dec. 2. The Women’s Club worked closely with the Poland Village Council to organize the event. They set up a series of events at Town Hall and at the Poland library across the street. Leah Wilson, a member of the Poland Village Council, said the council wanted to “carry through the tradition.“ The outside a rea a round Town Hall had been decorated for the holidays. The Town Hall building and the gazebo outside had Christmas bulbs and wreaths placed on them. The groups placed fire barrels around the lawn to keep people warm throughout the night. The event began at 4:30 p.m. at Town Hall with complementary cookies and hot chocolate drinks from the Women’s Club. The horse drawn carriage rides began at this time as well. The Poland Rotary and The Inn at Poland Way sponsored the carriage rides. The Holy Family Youth Choir performed classic Christmas songs in the gazebo at 6 p.m. The Poland Seminary Jazz Ensemble played after the choir. Music played on speakers inside the gazebo outside of those performances. Santa arrived a little after the Holy Family choir began to sing. He arrived in a fire truck and sat for photos on the Town Hall porch. Families took pictures with Santa and could also give letters to him during the event. Events at the library occurred at 5 p.m. The library set up two crafting tables for children to make between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Their two crafts included creating a Christmas ornament and a gingerbread man in a mug of hot cocoa. Librarians Karen Steed and Amanda Koller oversaw the crafts. They later had a story

Kravitz Deli and the Friends of the Library Bookstore remained open during the Lighting event. Kravitz Deli gave away free hot cocoa and had a special holiday menu for the event including hot dogs and cookies. The bookstore sold their books at half-priced during the weekend of the event. Mayor Timothy Sicafuse arrived at the gazebo at 7 p.m. and spoke about the great job that the Women’s Club did to organize the event. After a few words, Sicafuse did a countdown to light the Christmas tree in front

of Town Hall. Varsity Swim Coach Rachel Emerson and the swim team lit the tree. Music continued in the gazebo and a number of families remained for some time after the lighting of the tree. The carriage rides continued until 8 p.m. Children continued to play

in the lawn as they had done for hours before the lighting. The Poland Junior Women’s Club and the Poland Village Council partner together for this event every year. Hundreds flock to the event every year and they entertainment throughout the night.

Dobbins class learns French By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

T h i rd-g rade st udent s i n Missy Kountz’s class at Dobbins Elementar y School received an introductory French class on Nov. 20. Ron Saffell, a retired teacher, taught the students the lesson. His grandchildren go to Poland schools. He wanted to teach a French lesson in their classes, so he began coming into the Poland elementar y schools five years ago. “I want to give the students an awareness to the importa nce of la ng uage,“ Sa f fell said. He said he wanted to give the students a taste of the language so they can decide if they want to study French in the future. Saffell spent the class period teaching t he students the basics of the language. He focused on greeting and saying goodbye to people, counting and naming animals in French. He began the class by introducing himself in French. When the students did not understand, he reiterated himself a second time, but he used more body language. He wanted to stress the importance of body language when talking with someone. He taught the students how to greet each other and say goodbye, and then brought his granddaughter, Monica Moore, to the front to help him teach numbers from one to ten. Moore began with one, then Saffell said t wo, then Moore said three and so on. At one point in the lesson, he asked the students if they knew any French and the students sang “Frère Jacques.“ He explained the difference between the song’s literal translation and what it means in French. Saffell and Monica pulled stuffed animals out of a bag that Saffell brought. He taught the students how to say animal names, such as “chat“ for “cat.“ He i ncor porated cou nt i ng into this section to strengthen their counting skills. He passed out worksheets to reinforce the information they learned. Some of the worksheets came with the names

The students in Mrs. Kountz’s class learned greetings and goodbyes, animal names and how to count to ten in French. Saffell gave the students worksheets and websites to visit if they want to reinforce their skills in the language.

of websites the students could visit to continue their learning of the language. Saffell substitute teaches now that he has retired. He used to teach Latin, but he

picked up French because he has family history in the country and the language is more widely used. He teaches French classes at St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard.

Children learn about acorns

by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Ford Nature Center invited parents and children to its learning program on the acorn on Nov. 17. Marilyn Williams led the event, titled “Tales for Tots: In a Nutshell.” She gave the students story time, a small walk and a craft during the program. She had the children, all ages between 2 and 3, color a picture of an oak tree before the event started. Then she introduced the acorn and explained that they grow into oak trees. The children sat on the floor to listen to Williams read a story to them. The story covered the life of an acorn and how the seeds become oak trees. She asked the children to sit in a circle and gave each child five acorns. She read a piece where a squirrel took an acorn. After each time, the children subtracted one acorn from their total. They worked on both literacy and math skills in this activity. After the counting activity, Williams walked to a board of animals and they talked about which animals eat acorns. The students knew that squirrels eat them, but they were surprised

to find out that deer and wolves eat acorns too. Williams led the group outside and onto a trail in the back of the Ford Nature Center. She asked the children to find two oak leaves and five acorns, which they did. She stopped at a large oak tree to show the children how large of a tree the small acorn becomes. The children ended the pro-

gram with a craft when they returned inside. Williams handed the children a squirrel cut-out, a piece of green paper and leaves. The children glued the squirrel to the paper. Then, they glued the leaves to the back of the squirrel to give it a textured and colorful tail. Finally, they glued one of the acorns they found outside to the squirrel’s hands.
