Library to create learning space for IMLS grant T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of You ngstow n a nd Ma honing County received a grant of $20,765 for coordinated learning spaces at two places, the library and partner organization OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. “Sparks! Ignition Grants” are funded by The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The local grant, “Youngstown Ohio Learning Opportunities” or YOLO, will promote two relatively new lab spaces for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Participants will interact with hands-on activities and technology in a lab space opening in the Main library, located at 305 Wick Ave., in January, and with designated exhibits at OH WOW!. Through the YOLO grant, stackable badges will be developed to track the progress of participants as they move between the library and OH WOW! for learning. “The purpose of this project is to evaluate if learning is increased when two organizations offer opportunities for tiered learning experiences,” said Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Service, about the partnership between the Library and OH WOW! “This
grant aims to bring children into both the library and OH WOW! for a learning process that builds on itself as kids experience topics from multiple perspectives at two locations.” “As an example of the tiered learning experience,” Nolfi continued, “kids can visit OH WOW! and play a piece of music on a PVC pipe organ. They can continue that experience at the library, where they can compose and edit an original piece of music using software. These activities can earn them a Music badge.” Once the library’s learning space opens in January, children can take part in hands-on activities such as using a Makey, Makey with water controls to play video games, discovering how a 3D printer creates an airplane, learning about aerodynamics with a remote-controlled toy drone, making movies with animation, working with online Lego building, writing a mad-lib weather forecast, which can then be presented at the green-screen exhibit at OH WOW! and more. “OH WOW! is excited to be involved with this project. We believe its results will offer important insights for future efforts,” Suzanne Barbati, President and Executive Director of OH WOW!, said.

Boardman mixes fun with fitness for children By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a new event with a special guest for their Baby Brilliant program. Austintown librarian, Ashley Potopovich, came to the Boardman librar y to lead the children in a Fitness Fun storytime - a first for the Boardman location. F it ne s s F u n St or y t i me, which has been done at other libraries in Mahoning County, is a fun event that gets children moving while learning. Potopovich focused on the five senses for storytime. She emphasized lea rning body parts and which part is used for different senses. This storytime started with the “Can’t Wait to Celebrate” song. Following the introduction, the children did the five senses song. The five senses song instructed the children to point to their body parts when the song listed the different senses. The only book that was read was “The Bear Went Over the Mountain,” by Iza Trapani. When the book was finished, Potopovich gave the children egg shakers. The egg shakers were used to shake during the song “All the Raindrops,” to act as a rain sound. The children then participated in an activity working on identif y ing body pa rts. Potopovich held up pictures of body parts and said what sense comes from the body part. The children would then shout out t he na me of t he body part. “Tooty Ta” was the last senses song and the event ended with the usual “If You’re Happy and You Know It” book and dance. T her e w er e f i v e d i f f erent tables with activities for each sense. The child listened to sha kers, smelled scents, touc he d te x t u re s, lo oke d through colorful tubes and had a snack to take home.

Various books and toys were for sale at the book fair. The parents could come in before or after their conference times to shop.
Book fair benefits parents and students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Scholastic book fairs are not just for students. Stadium Drive Elementary school hosted an adult book fair on Nov. 24. The students of Stadium Drive Elementary school had a week long book fair, put on by Scholastic, to pick and choose books they wanted. Afterward, the children’s families had the opportunity to have their own. Having an adult-only book fair allowed the parents to pick
out books and other gifts to get to their children as holiday gifts without the children knowing. With the students having their book fair first, they could pick out different items and books that they liked. The parents would then be able to get their children the items that they wanted but may not have been able to get on their own. The adult book fair was during parent-teacher conferences, making it easy for the parents to browse the library before or after their conference.
“They like to just wander in when they come without their kids. Then they can actually take the time to shop for books,” said Mrs. Marsco. Aside from the parents buying books for their children, they use the book fair as an opportunity to buy books for the teachers at Stadium Drive. The books go to the teachers as gifts to use in the classroom. The purchases made from both the students and adults help give funds to the library and allow the library to buy more books.
During the Red Kettle Campaign, anony mous donors sporadically and randomly put gold coins in Salvation Army red kettles around the country. This trend became a reality for The Salvation Army of Mahoning County, as the organization discovered two 1 ounce fine gold coins in two of its kettles. T he gold coi ns were dropped in kett les at t he Walmart Store in Austintown and Sparkle Supermarket in Cornersburg. The gold coins will be taken to Ace Diamond & Jewelry Brokers in Boardman to be appraised. It is believed that the coins c ou l d b e w or t h a r ou n d $1,100-$1,200 each.
This is the fourth year in a row that The Salvation Army has discovered gold coins in its kettles around the county. The anonymous donor or donors did not leave any information. The Red Kettle Campaign is the biggest fundraising effort undertaken by The Salvation Army in Mahoning County each year. The campaign has a goal of $350,000. Funds raised at the kettles are used locally to provide Christmas assistance, emergency aid, food, clot h i ng, socia l ser v ices, recreational programs, seniors program and essential services to the less fortunate year round. The red kettle campaign runs through Dec. 24. If Cremation is your choice...

Four Little Free Libraries open in Youngstown In November, The Rotary Club of Youngstown donated four Little Free Libraries and placed them throughout the city. Little Free Libraries can be found downtown at the SOAP GALLERY, located at 117S Champion Street; on the city’s south side within the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Youngstown, located at 2105 Oakhill Avenue; on the north side within Wick Park, located at 260 Park Ave.; and on the city’s east side at the Kathrine Hawks Haney Give the Children a Chance Inc. pavilion on South Truesdale, Little Free Libraries are “take a book, return a book” gathering places where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories with no library card and no due dates. They are a way to give free books to children and adults. The basic principle behind Little Free Libraries is “To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations.” Communities are also encouraged to decorate or embellish their Little Free Library, providing a “canvas” for public art in the neighborhoods. Little Free Libraries have become a community movement across the United States and throughout the world, offering free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. All 50 states and 40 countries worldwide have been involved in the literary program. There are more than 22,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. An estimated 1,670,000 books have been donated and borrowed from 2010-2015. All registered libraries can be found on the world map at http://littlefreelibrary.org. The Rotary Club of Youngstown and community partners have installed a total of eight Little Free Libraries to date and plan to build and install an additional 26 in the Youngstown-Mahoning Valley area.

Toddlers trot to Thanksgiving storytime By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children stayed up late to head to the Night Owl storytime at the Boardman library on Nov. 24. Librarian Karen Saunders led the storytime with a Thanksgiving theme. The books, rhymes and crafts were all focused on Thanksgiving with the holiday approaching. The children sat behind the story snakes while eagerly
waiting to participate in the activities that Saunders had planned. Saunders started out with the book “1 Little, 2 Little, 3 Little Pilgrims,” by B.G. Hennessy. After the story was over, Saunders used a paper plate to tell a story about Running Bear, the “Little Indian Boy.” She would cut different shapes out of the paper plate, such as fruits, as the story progressed. The plate eventually turned into a canoe

for the Running Bear to ride on in his trip to the feast. The children found joy out of seeing how a paper plate could make a story come to life so easily. The book “1,2,3 Thanksgiving” by W. Nikola-Lisa was next. The children were given different magnetic items to place on the whiteboard as Saunders read the story. As the items were placed on the board, the children counted aloud how many items were in the picture.
The farmer and turkey game was the last activity before the children went to create their own turkeys. A farmer and turkey were passed in a circle among the children and when the farmer caught the turkey, the game was over. After a few rounds of the game, the children headed to the craft table to color and put together a turkey. The turkey was used to play the “turkey on my head” game.

Sprout club creates gourd ornaments By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children gathered at Fellows Riverside Gardens to attend the monthly Sprout Club meeting on Nov. 19, led by Lynn Zocolo. The Sprout Club happens once a month and is organized into a series of three months, The next series will be December, Janu-
ary and February. This month’s meeting was all about gourds. The children were able to look at and feel different types of gourds and then paint their own at the end of the lesson. Alice, the volunteer at this meeting, knew all about gourds and brought in many of the ones she decorated and transformed
into different objects. She had one that was shaped to look like a cat, a snowman, an apple and several with different faces. Zocolo is the horticulture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks and leads different programs for all ages. She also teaches master garden classes and vegetable See SPROUT, Page 7

programs. “To see the wonder in their eyes makes it worth it,” said Zocolo of teaching the children’s programs. She went on to say t hat learning about fruits, vegetables and gardening as a child is something new and when the children see and hear the different things, it is exciting to them, and to Zocolo. When the children arrived, they had two coloring sheets with gourds on them to color
while they waited for the class to start. Once the class started, Zocolo and Alice talked about various gourds and passed them around to the children. To finish the class, Zocolo gave the children an egg gourd and stencils to paint a dragonfly on them. The children were allowed to take home the gourds they painted to be a ornament for their home. “It’s just a pure pleasure to connect people with plants. That’s what we like to do here at the Gardens, connect people,” said Zocolo.
