CHC honors veterans at assembly By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Students and faculty at C.H. Campbell Elementary School honored local veterans at the school’s Veteran’s Day Assembly Nov. 11. The assembly featured Colonel Charles Coleman and Captain Milt Kochert, both from American Legion Post 177 in Canfield. C.H. Campbell Principal Travis Lavery welcomed everyone to the assembly. “We are here for a special reason. We are here to honor all the people who have served our country and risked so much for everyone in our country. It is also a day near to my heart, as my father is a veteran and my brother-in-law and a close friend are on active duty. They have all made sacrifices to protect us and so many people across the world,” Lavery said. Lavery introduced the secondgrade class, which, under the direction of Michael Fay, C.H. Campbell music specialist, performed “The Star Spangled Banner.” The students also acted as narrators, giving the audience

facts about and the history of Veteran’s Day. A skit was then performed by a group of fourth-grade students, about conducting research on and learning about Veteran’s Day for a school project. The second-graders took the stage again and led the audience in singing “God Bless America” and then performed “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Fourth-grade teacher Dana Za rlenga-Buist int roduced speaker Colonel Charles Coleman, who focused on the motto of the U.S. Military Academy Duty, Honor, Country - and how it relates to veterans. “Duty describes obligation. Obligation equals the need to do the right thing at the right time. The obligation of a veteran is unique. They prepared and fought our nation’s wars when called upon by the President of the United States. Honor is doing the right thing and acting honestly. For veterans this is especially important in times of war. Country refers to allegiance to something you love. You have an allegiance to your family, friends

and school. Veterans take the Oath of Service to protect and defend the United States. They pledge to protect our country from enemies. To veterans, this is more important than their allegiance to their family, friends and school,” Coleman said. After Coleman’s speech, attendees were shown a video on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which was made by a fifthgrade student. Za rlenga-Buist t hen recognized the veterans in attendance, including Canfield High School Athletic Director Greg Cooper, who retired from the Navy after a 30-year career. Each veteran was given a flag which was flown over the grave of a veteran in one of Canfield’s cemeteries. Zarlenga-Buist then recognized family members of C.H. Campbell staff who are on active duty or are veterans. They were also presented with a flag. “Everyday, think of and thank people who protect our precious freedom. If you see a member of the military, lean over and say thank you. It means more

to them than medals. That’s all they really want,” ZarlengaBuist said. The second-graders took the stage again and performed “Salute to Armed Forces,” during which veterans were asked to stand during their branch’s song. To close the assembly, Captain Milton Kochert explained to the audience what it means to be a veteran. “A veteran is a man or a woman who fell in love with their country. A veteran is willing to lay down his or her life for the Statue of Liberty. A veteran does what they must in spite of personal consequences. A veteran gets a lump in his or her throat when they see their beloved flag. A veteran is well-deserving of our appreciation, love and prayers. Always. Thank you for recognizing the importance of veterans on Veteran’s Day,” Kochert said. In their final performance, second-grade teacher Patricia Mosure joined the second-grade students in singing “Proud To Be An American.”

T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County received a grant of $20,765 for coordinated learning spaces at two places, the library and partner organization OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. “Sparks! Ignition Grants” are funded by The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The local grant, “Youngstown Ohio Learning Opportunities” or YOLO, will promote two relatively new lab spaces for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Participants will interact with hands-on activities and technology in a lab space opening in the Main library, located at 305 Wick Ave., in January, and with designated exhibits at OH WOW!. Through the YOLO grant, stackable badges will be developed to track the progress of participants as they move between the library and OH WOW! for learning. “The purpose of this project is to evaluate if learning is increased when two organizations offer opportunities for tiered learning experiences,” said Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Service, about the partnership between the Library and

OH WOW! “This grant aims to bring children into both the library and OH WOW! for a learning process that builds on itself as kids experience topics from multiple perspectives at two locations.” “As an example of the tiered learning experience,” Nolfi continued, “kids can visit OH WOW! and play a piece of music on a PVC pipe organ. They can continue that experience at the library, where they can compose and edit an original piece of music using software. These activities can earn them a Music badge.” Once the library’s learning space opens in January, children can take part in hands-on activities such as using a Makey, Makey with water controls to play video games, discovering how a 3D printer creates an airplane, learning about aerodynamics with a remote-controlled toy drone, making movies with animation, working with online Lego building, writing a madlib weather forecast, which can then be presented at the greenscreen exhibit at OH WOW! and more. “OH WOW! is excited to be involved with this project. We believe its results will offer important insights for future efforts,” Suzanne Barbati, President and Executive Director of OH WOW!, said.

Four Little Free Libraries open in Youngstown In November, The Rotar y Club of Youngstown donated four Little Free Libraries and placed them throughout the city. Little Free Libraries can be found downtown at the SOAP G A L L ERY, located at 117S Champion Street; on the city’s south side within the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Youngstown, located at 2105 Oakhill Avenue; on the north side within Wick Park, located at 260 Park Ave.; and on the city’s east side at the Kathrine Hawks Haney Give the

They are a way to give free books to children and adults. The basic principle behind Little Free Libraries is “To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as

we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations.” Communities are also encouraged to decorate or embellish their Little Free Library, providing a “canvas” for public art in the neighborhoods. Little Free Libraries have become a community movement across the United States and throughout the world, offering free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. Gold coins appear in Salvation Army kettles During the Red Kettle Campaign, anonymous donors sporadically and randomly put gold coins in Salvation Army red kettles around the country. This trend became a reality for The Salvation Army of Mahoning County, as the organization discovered two 1 ounce fine gold coins in two of its kettles. The gold coins were dropped in kettles at the Walmart Store in Austintown and Sparkle Supermarket in Cornersburg.

The gold coins will be taken to Ace Diamond & Jewelry Brokers in Boardman to be appraised. It is believed that the coins could be worth around $1,100$1,200 each. This is the fourth year in a row that The Salvation Army has discovered gold coins in its kettles around the county. The anonymous donor or donors did not leave any information. The Red Kettle Campaign is the biggest fundraising effort

undertaken by The Salvation Army in Mahoning County each year. The campaign has a goal of $350,000. Funds raised at the kettles are used locally to prov ide Christmas assistance, emergency aid, food, clothing, social services, recreational programs, seniors program and essential services to the less fortunate year round. The red kettle campaign runs through Dec. 24.

Sprout club creates gourd ornaments By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children gathered at Fellows Riverside Gardens to attend the monthly Sprout Club meeting on Nov. 19, led by Lynn Zocolo. The Sprout Club happens once a month and is organized into a series of three months, The next series will be December, January and February. This month’s meeting was all about gourds. The children were able to look at and feel different types of gourds and then paint their own at the end of the lesson. Alice, the volunteer at this meeting, knew all about gourds and brought in many of the ones she decorated and transformed into different objects. She had one that was shaped to look like a cat, a snowman, an apple and several with different faces. Zocolo is the horticulture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks and leads different programs for all ages. She also teaches master garden classes and vegetable programs.

“To see the wonder in their eyes makes it worth it,” said Zocolo of teaching the children’s programs. She went on to say that learning about fruits, vegetables and gardening as a child is something new and when the children see and hear the different things, it is exciting to them, and to Zocolo. When the children arrived, they had two coloring sheets with gourds on them to color while they waited for the class to start. Once the class started, Zocolo and Alice talked about various gourds and passed them around to the children. To finish the class, Zocolo gave the children an egg gourd and stencils to paint a dragonfly on them. The children were allowed to take home the gourds they painted to be a ornament for their home. “It’s just a pure pleasure to connect people with plants. That’s what we like to do here at the Gardens, connect people,” said Zocolo.
