Library to create learning space for IMLS grant T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of You ngstow n a nd Ma honing County received a grant of $20,765 for coordinated learning spaces at two places, the library and partner organization OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. “Sparks! Ignition Grants” are funded by The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The local grant, “Youngstown Ohio Learning Opportunities” or YOLO, will promote two relatively new lab spaces for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Participants will interact with hands-on activities and technology in a lab space opening in the Main library, located at 305 Wick Ave., in January, and with designated exhibits at OH WOW!. Through the YOLO grant, stackable badges will be developed to track the progress of participants as they move between the library and OH WOW! for learning. “The purpose of this project is to evaluate if learning is increased when two organizations offer opportunities for tiered learning experiences,” said Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Service, about the partnership between the Library and OH WOW! “This
grant aims to bring children into both the library and OH WOW! for a learning process that builds on itself as kids experience topics from multiple perspectives at two locations.” “As an example of the tiered learning experience,” Nolfi continued, “kids can visit OH WOW! and play a piece of music on a PVC pipe organ. They can continue that experience at the library, where they can compose and edit an original piece of music using software. These activities can earn them a Music badge.” Once the library’s learning space opens in January, children can take part in hands-on activities such as using a Makey, Makey with water controls to play video games, discovering how a 3D printer creates an airplane, learning about aerodynamics with a remote-controlled toy drone, making movies with animation, working with online Lego building, writing a mad-lib weather forecast, which can then be presented at the green-screen exhibit at OH WOW! and more. “OH WOW! is excited to be involved with this project. We believe its results will offer important insights for future efforts,” Suzanne Barbati, President and Executive Director of OH WOW!, said.

Children become mad scientists for a day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Two members of Mad Science of Northeast Ohio came to the Poland library on Nov. 21 to put on a demonstration for children and their family members. Mad Science of Northeast Ohio is a company that allows hands-on experiences for children to learn about science. Poland librarian Amanda Kollar oversaw the event. “A few demonstrations will be put on, also a few hands-on science experiments,” she said. The two specials guests were Dr. K. and Professor Plasma. Dr.
K. was the lead presenter who put on the different experiments while Professor Plasma was her assistant. They explained the three main rules to the children before the experiments started so everyone would be safe. After the rules were explained, Dr. K. called up a volunteer to be her first helper. The first experiment was like a magic trick. Abby, the first helper, was told to use her senses to feel, smell, listen and look at the sticker. Dr. K. then ripped up the sticker and lit it on fire. She asked the children what she thought would happen to the sticker once it was thrown into Professor Plasma’s
metal container. The sticker was put into the container, ripped and set on fire, and came out in one perfect piece. Several other children were called upon to help with the experiments. The crowd really enjoyed the experiments that used dry ice. The children were not allowed to touch the dry ice because it is -109 degrees, but they could see a close-up reaction of the different effects of it. A hot quarter shook when placed in the dry ice, while a hot screwdriver made a screaming noise. Dr. K. and Professor Plasma ended their show with a dry ice fog. Half of the room was told to
make spooky wind noises and the other half made spooky woodsy noises. As the hot water and dry ice mixed together to create the fog, and Dr. K. walked around with the bucket so the fog would surround the children. Dr. K. explained this was how special effects were made in old movies. The idea behind the program is that the children got to enjoy something different while still getting a lesson in the science field. “This is a special program. Every now and then we have paid presenters for different programs,” said Kollar.

City, library and SCORE partner The City of Youngstown Community Planning and Economic Development Office along with SCORE and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) announced the three organizations are entering into a partnership to assist businesses in the community. The three groups signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) formalizing the partnership. The MOU explains, “The goals of the partnership are to promote the variety of resources available to each partner and to improve accessibility to the business community, and to leverage the different forms of assistance provided by the partners and offer support in a more comprehensive manner to strengthen the small business community.” Mayor John McNa lly explained that the City’s Community Planning and Economic Development Office has been focusing for the past 18 months on getting out to the community, meeting small business owners and trying to provide those business owners with more assistance. The three organizations combine a wealth of knowledge from each of their unique strengths. The City’s Economic Development Division offers support for business development in its many forms, including entrepreneurship, business reten-

tion, expansion and attraction. SCORE is a national nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. SCORE has helped the small business community for more than 50 years and is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Key among the unique offerings of the library is the ability to book a one-on-one appointment with BIC librarian Stuart Gibbs. Book-A-Business librarian appointments are free to any business in the city to help them discover the resources available at their public library. Frank Bordonaro, Chapter
Chair of Youngstown SCORE, noted that often small businesses don’t have the necessary time to research and find mentors; this partnership creates an opportunity for all three agencies to go out to them in the community. The library has long worked with SCORE members to facilitate their work as mentors for start-up businesses. The library and the city will host SCORE office hours for mentorship and business plan assistance. SCORE mentors will give advice to their clients and the service is free and confidential. SCORE also provides expert resources with online counseling and tools at SCORE.org.

Participants bake fresh loaf of bread By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens invited Sara Scudier to teach a class about bread making on Nov. 21. Several guests attended the event and went home with a fresh loaf of homemade bread. Scudier gave printed out instructions to the participants to help guide them through
the bread making process. She demonstrated step by step and answered any questions along the way. The participants started by measuring ingredients, mixing everything together, kneading the dough, putting it into molds and then baking it into bread. The entire process took about fours hours, but Scudier said if there was more available time,
she would have used it. The more time someone puts into making bread, the better the final product turns out. Some of the participants had made their own bread before, but others had never made it. Those who made bread before told the others about their experiences and different techSee BREAD, Page 8
In November, The Rotary Club of Youngstown donated four Little Free Libraries and placed them throughout the city. Little Free Libraries can be found downtown at the SOAP GA LLERY, located at 117S Champion Street; on the city’s south side within the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Youngstown, located at 2105 Oakhill Avenue; on the north side within Wick Park, located at 260 Park Ave.; and on the city’s east side at the Kathrine Hawks Haney Give the Children a Chance Inc. pavilion on South Truesdale, Litt le Free Libraries are “take a book, return a book” gathering places where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories with no library card and no due dates. They are a way to give free books to children and adults. The basic principle behind Little Free Libraries is “To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations.” Communities are also encouraged to decorate or embellish their Little Free Library, providing a “canvas” for public art in the neighborhoods.
Little Free Libraries have become a community movement across the United States and throughout the world, offering free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. All 50 states and 40 countries worldwide have been involved in the literary program. There are more than 22,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. An estimated 1,670,000 books have been donated and borrowed from 2010-2015. All registered libraries can be found on the world map at http://littlefreelibrary.org. The Rota r y Club of Youngstown and community partners have installed a total of eight Little Free Libraries to date and plan to build and install an additional 26 in the Youngstown-Mahoning Valley area. Guests attended Fel lows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 24 to create a Thanksgiving arrangement for the holiday. Marie Borocz led a lesson on how to create your own Thanksgiving centerpiece. Borocz prov ided va r ious types of flowers, cattails, plastic berries and other objects to use in the arrangements. An array of fall colors, from red to brown, were available to choose from. Those who attended started with a f lower pot to place all of their flowers in. There was a small pumpkin on a stick placed in the center of each arrangement. The f lowers were then placed all around the pumpkin. Borocz, owner of Homestead Florist and Gifts, made her own centerpiece as a demonstration for the others to follow along with. She told the ladies attending to be as creative as they wished. If anyone needed help, Borocz had no problem walking around the room giving out advice to those who asked for it.

Poland Union hosts Pancakes with Santa By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary School hosted a Breakfast with Santa event on Dec. 5. Pancakes were served along with pictures with Santa. Around 500 people attended the pancake breakfast to eat, write letters to Santa and then get a picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The students of Poland Union created their own place mats to use while they ate breakfast with their friends and families. There were pancakes, donated by Perkins, and sausage, donated by Beau Weaver, for the families to enjoy. The PTO put this event together for the second year in a row. Nearly 25 people volunteered their time to help make the event run smoothly, while 12 of the PTO moms made about 1,000 pancakes all throughout the morning. After eating their breakfast, the children went to the gym to write letters to Santa. When they finished their letters, they had the opportunity to give their letters to Santa and Mrs. Clause and get a picture. Kohl’s Associates in Action was asked to help out during the pancake breakfast. Five associ-
