FAFSA workshop Applying for federal student aid can be very intimidating, but the MCCTC Adult Career Center, located at 7300 N. Palmyra Road in Canfield, is ready to help. Join them for a hands-on FAFSA workshop on Jan. 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. and learn about the types of Federal Title IV funding available, common misunderstandings and mistakes completing the application, and gain hands-on assistance with completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Gotta Move story time This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in January at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego my library Meet at the Canfield library on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 19 at 2:30 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Tales to tails Read to your favorite therapy dogs on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or they’ll find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.

Slime time for tweens Join the Canfield library in the laboratory on Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m. as they create several slime species. Try your hand at making and playing with unicorn, fluffy, galaxy, clear and glow-in-the-dark varieties of slime. All necessary supplies will be provided, including containers to bring home a sample or two. Light snacks and a drink will be enjoyed after clean up.

CHC students build gingerbread houses

Second-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School received a special holiday visit from former Canfield School Board member Barry Tancer on Dec. 13.

Tancer instructed the children in each class in how to build mini wooden gingerbread house ornaments, giving them step-by-step instructions.

“We are learning about holidays around the world and traditions in other countries, so the gingerbread houses of Germany are a perfect fit,” said secondgrade teacher Stephanie Maurer.

Maurer also said they are incorporating other aspects of the curriculum into the gingerbread house project.

“I love this project because it uses both social studies and math. We are also incorporating Bridges math into the project, figuring out how many pieces of wood each class would need to build the gingerbread hous-

Local schools hosts holiday party for students with special needs

The Canfield Local School District hosted its annual Special Needs Holiday Party hosted by Amron Lanes on Dec. 7.

The K-12 students enjoyed bowling, dancing, lunch with classmates and a visit with Santa.

“This annual event is organized by the school district and we have all our principals here, and board members, parents, bus drivers, special education teachers and aides and members of the administration are here celebrating the holidays and enjoying a fun day with our students. We also have members of our high school‘s Helping Hands group here to celebrate with us,” said John Vitto, Director of Special Services.

Santa arrived with gifts for all the students, which were Canfield Cardinals T-shirts.

“This is a wonderful day for students and staff to enjoy the holiday season. We are extremely lucky to have such caring staff members and wonderful students,” said Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan.

Fellows Riverside Garden hosts annual winter celebration

The Mill Creek MetroParks are celebrating Fellow Riverside Garden’s 60th anniversary during their annual Winter Celebration.

This year’s celebration has a “Frozen in Time” theme to celebrate the diamond anniversary of the facility.

Jaime Yohman, the park’s Community Engagement Director, said that annually non-profit organizations purchase 60 trees spread throughout the facility to decorate during the event.

“It’s a community event, and we have a large response from the community throughout the month of December,” Yohman said.

Along with the annual tree walk to celebrate the anniver-

sary, the committee created a memory wall.

“We reached out to the community and asked for any pictures of the gardens throughout the years,” said Sharmon Lesnak, the head volunteer for the event.

Lesnak, along with Pam Nock and Debbie Walker, organized the event and coordinated the volunteers.

“We really want to thank the volunteers. They’re great and this would not be possible without them,” Lesnak said.

The planning for the event begins in early June when the committee starts organizing work shop days. During the workshops, Lesnak said they hand-make ornaments to use during the month of December to decorate the gardens. This year, Lesnak and other commit-

All supplies were donated by community members and created by volunteers.

“It’s a huge undertaking every year,” Yohman said. “But Sharmon is very creative and we always have a beautiful turn out.”

The event will also feature characters from Disney’s “Frozen” to fit the theme.

Sister’s Anna and Elsa will make an appearance on Saturdays during December for children and their families to enjoy.

“It’s really a big community event,” Lesnak said. “We always try to have something for the kids to enjoy.”

Along with the tree walk and the visits from Disney characters, the event will feature a

number of musicians to entertain community members. The community is also invited to bring a donation of non perishable food that the park will give to the Second Harvest food bank at the end of the event. Kravitz Deli will also offer food specials throughout December at their Garden Cafe.

“Community members can come in, see the lights and have a nice meal at the cafe,” Yohman said. “It’s really a great event everyone seems to have fun.”

Frozen in Time w ill run through Dec. 30 at Fellows Riverside Garden, with the garden staying open till 7 p.m. on Saturdays to accommodate guests.

“We really owe so much of this to the lovely volunteers,” Lesnak said. “Without them none of this would be possible.”

On Dec. 22 beginning at 10 a.m., the Cardinal Mooney High School speech and debate team will host a cookie walk in the school cafeteria, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown. More than 20 varieties of cookies, including fudge, brownies, nut rolls and more, will be on sale at $8 per pound. This event is open to the public. Proceeds to benefit the CMHS speech and debate team.

Friendly Squares January square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Jan. 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Mill Creek MetroParks hosted its annual Olde Fashion Christmas event at Lanterman’s Mill Nov. 24 and 25.

According to Carol Vigorito, the park’s recreation and education director, the event has been a park tradition for decades.

“It’s basically a holiday celebration,” Vigorito said. “It’s a really good opportunity to enjoy the season.”

Lanterman’s Mill’s three levels were packed full with local vendors, entertainment and other events sponsored by the mill.

She said that the park gives priority to vendors who have attended previous events, as well as hand crafted works and local art.

“We have very limited space here for vendors. So we pick and choose according to theme,” Vigorito said.

Many vendors demonstrate their craft during the event, including wooden spoon carving, leather work and a weaver.

“It can be a challenge to demonstrate here, because they are working with their hands in the cold,” Vigorito said. “So when we find a vendor willing to demonstrate we like to bring them back.”

The event takes place on the last weekend before the mill closes for the season.

Along with vendors, the park hires va r ious enter ta iners throughout the day.

Entertainers included the band One String Short, a balloon artist and a visit from Santa Claus.

Community members also have the opportunity to donate to the parks giving tree where they collect hats, gloves and scarves for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.

Vigorito said that the park has been doing a collection for the last 15 years, and the turn out is always huge.

“Last year was incredible, we have six or seven huge contain-

ers full of items, and they really appreciate it,” Vigorito said.

She sa id t hat t he event wouldn’t be possible without the help from volunteers.

“For the last week volunteers have been helping decorate in the sleet and freezing weather,” Vigorito said.

Twenty-five volunteers spend between 3-6 hours helping park employees prepare for the annual event.

Vigorito said volunteers help run the giving tree, the chestnut roasting, and that even Santa was a volunteer.

“If it wasn’t for them this program wouldn’t have happened,” Vigorito said. “They are just so dedicated.”

CHS competes in NEAC relay meet The Canfield High School swimmers competed in a NEAC relay meet on Dec. 8. The Canfield boys took home third place out of eight teams while the girls came in fifth.

The boys 100 freestyle relay team of Bobby Kutsch, James Dietz, Rob DiDomenico and Jason Paris came in second with a meet record-breaking time of 43.24. The boys 200 backstroke relay team of Matthew Peckman, Connor Fritz, Nick Colonna and Luke Dietz took first place. First place eluded the girls swimmers, but the 200 backstroke relay team of Sydney Schuler, Sarah Klepec, Elle Dawson and Miranda Peckman came home with second.

Swimmers take second in tri-meet The swim teams at Canfield High School competed in a tri-meet against Boardman and Massillon Washington on Dec. 7 at Massillon Washington. Both teams finished in second place with scores of 92.

For the boys, Jason Paris took first place in the 50 freestyle. The Canfield 400 freestyle relay team of Bobby Kutsch, James Dietz, Rob DiDomenico and Paris also saw first place victory. First place finishes eluded the girls team.

CHS swimmers compete in quad meet The Canfield High School swim team competed in their first meet of the 2018-19 season at the NEAC quad meet against Boardman, Warren and Wooster. They finished in third place with team scores of 122 for the boys and 92 for the girls.

The meet took place at Youngstown State University on Dec. 1. First place finishes eluded both boys and girls teams, but second place finishes were earned by the boys 200 medley relay team of Connor Fritz, Joe Klepec, Rob DiDomenico and Matthew Peckman; Jason Paris (boys 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle); the boys 200 freestyle relay team if Bobby Kutsch, James Dietz, Peckman and Paris; and Sydney Schuler (girls 200 freestyle).

CVMS food drive benefits Second Harvest Food Bank

The Canfield Village Middle School student council sponsored a food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank during the last half of the month of November.

Non-perishable food items were collected in homerooms a nd t he homeroom which collected the most items was awarded a pizza party from student council.

To encourage students to

bring in some of the most needed items, they received double points for specified items, such as peanut butter or canned tuna or chicken.

“Our food drive is an annual event we hold around Thanksgiving. Second Harvest Food Bank comes to the school to pick the food up and will distribute it throughout the holiday season,” said Sara Dysert, CVMS student council advisor.

The school collected a grand total of 1,666 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Happily Ever After Buchenics mark 60th anniversary at family dinner BOARDMAN Michael and Catherine Buchenic were honored recently at a family dinner at The Chophouse in Warren in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Hosts for the event were the couple’s children, Michael (Cindy) Buchenic of New Middletown, Lori (Dan) Fishel of Poland and Mark (Carla) Buchenic of Canfield.

Seven grandchildren, Michael, Morgan, Marissa, Tyler, Kaylee and Alec Buchenic and Danielle Fishel, complete their familiy.

Mr. Buchenic and the former Catherine Ringos were married Nov. 8, 1958, at Holy Trinity Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Buchenic retired in 1994 from St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital where she was employed in the billing department.

Her husband is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was an agent with Nationwide Insurance before retiring in 1994. He also worked part-time in the circulation departThe Buchenics are members of Christ Our ment of The Vindicator.

8 at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church in Boardman. The Rev. Mykhaylo Farynets officiated, and a reception followed at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center.

The bride is a daughter of Edward and Michele Straub of Canfield.

Dr. Hogan is a son of Thomas and Marybeth Hogan of Auburn, N.Y. Fashioned of pearl Mikado silk, the bride’s off-the-shoulder gown featured a sweetheart neckline with a structured bodice that extended to a flared skirt. It was detailed with covered buttons and a crystal belt, and she also wore a double-tier silk-trimmed veil.

Wearing navy blue gowns were the matron of honor, Megan Szczepinski, the bride’s sister, and the bridesmaids, Ava Lesko, the bride’s goddaughter; Allie Camardo-Webb; Gina Philibin; Abby Singleton; Katie Spaulding; Stephanie Straub, the bride’s cousin; Danielle Wagner and Kathryn Westphal.

Sharing the duties of best man were the groom’s brothers, John and Sean Hogan.

Groomsmen were Chase Baker; Ryan Lewis, the groom’s cousin; Riaan Hogan, the groom’s brother-in-law; Dave Lomascolo; Rashad Farha; and Greg Benedict.

Staci Lombardo | Keith Sikora BOARDMAN St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park was the setting at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 6 as Pastor Ron Blakeman solemnized the marriage ceremony of Staci Lombardo and Keith Sikora.

Greg and Terri Lombardo of Boardman are the bride’s parents, and the groom is a son of Rick Sikora and Mary Jo Sikora, both of Canfield.

A reception took place at the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park.

The bride wore an ivory, beaded A-line gown.

Marissa Johnson, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore a navy dress, as did the bridesmaids, Kelly Persin and Laura Davanzo.

Michael Sikora, brother of the groom, was best man, and groomsmen were Tim Persin and Dan Buckler.

The bride graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing management and advertising/ public relations and a master’s of business administration. She is a marketing manager at Northern States Metals.

The groom graduated from the Univer-

sity of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He also graduated from YSU with a master’s of business administration.

He is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at YSU and works as a welder and machinist.

The newlyweds live in Youngstown.

The couple are living in Nashville and plan a honeymoon to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, before the holidays.

BOARDMAN Marriage vows were exchanged Oct. 13 at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park by Samantha Ditman and Brandon Suchora, both of Struthers. Officiating was Minister Kenneth E. Sabol.

The bride is a daughter of Robert and Lori Ditman of Struthers.

Mr. Suchora is a son of Dean and Debbie Suchora, also of Struthers.

Jessica Ditman served as maid of honor for her sister, and bridesmaids were another sister, Mandy Ditman; the bride’s cousins, Lindsay Zweig, Cassandra Clyde and T’lyn Candella; and the groom’s cousins, Riley and Katelyn Loughman. They wore plumcolored gowns.

Cameron Suchora performed the duties of best man for his brother, and groomsmen were his brothers, Keith and Tristan Suchora; the bride’s cousin, Jason Sabol; Tony Barber; Dominic Lariccia; and Jake Thomas.

Mrs. Suchora earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University and is a fourth-grade math and science teacher for Struthers City Schools. She also received her master’s degree in educational technology and is a volunteer firefighter with the Struthers Fire Department.

Her husband is a journeyman pipefitter with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396 in Boardman.

Following a reception at The Embassy, the couple spent their honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

They live in Struthers.
