Lieutenant Colonel John Boccieri spoke at Glenwood Junior High School’s Veterans Day on Nov. 10. The assembly featured speakers, a video, the Boardman symphonic band and community veterans.
Ava Valko performed the White Table Ceremony to commemorate the fallen, missing and imprisoned soldiers. Following the display, two men came out and played “Taps.“ Ryan spoke following the playing of “Taps.“ He began his talk by listing some of the challenges that the students will face in their lifetime. He transitioned from that to helping others through service. He explained that helping others will make one happy. He listed four keywords for success: Vigor, Excellence, Teamwork and Service, or VETS. He said these four words would
be important for the students’ futures. The students should be energetic and motivated moving forward, look to be their best, work together and serve others to help the community. The assembly ended with a few selections from the Boardman Orchestra and a closing statement from student Eden Lesnansky. The orchestra played a series of patriotic songs, such as “God Bless America“ and “Grand Old Flag.“ They played a medley of the armed forces’ anthems and had the veterans stand when their branch’s song played.
BOARDMAN
Glenwood Junior High School hosted a Veterans Day assembly featuring former veterans and Representative Tim Ryan on Nov. 10 in the gymnasium. The school invited 26 veterans from the community to join their assembly. The assembly commemorated their sacrifice through videos, music and speeches. “It’s something you won’t see on the state report card that shows the school’s excellence,“ said Boardman Superintendent Timothy Saxton of the assembly. He continued to say the assembly brought history alive for the students and helped them learn what democracy is all about. The assembly began with an introduction video from YouTube in which veterans talked about their service. Then, the veterans of the community walked in while the Boardman drumline played. Lieutenant Colonel John Boccieri spoke at the event about some of the experiences he had during his service. He explained conditions in other countries less fortunate than the U.S.A. His example expressed the freedoms the students have because of the veterans. He said that service makes people extraordinary. Students Daniel Chiaberta and
