CVMS food drive benefits Second Harvest By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield Village Middle School Student Council sponsored a food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank Nov. 8-30. Non-perishable food items were collected in homerooms and the homeroom in each grade level which collected the most items was awarded a pizza party. To encourage students to bring in some of the most needed items, each grade level received double points for a specified item. Fifth-graders received double points for bringing in peanut butter, sixth-grade students received double points for bringing in canned tuna or chicken, seventhgrade students received double points for bringing in macaroni

and cheese and eighth-graders received double points for bringing in canned soup. “We really have a lot of food this year. We had a lot last year, but I think we have even more this year. Our collection boxes were overflowing. We have so many enthusiastic fifth-graders who love helping our school, so they really came through and brought a lot of food. And our competition between homerooms motivated students, too. We like helping Second Harvest because a lot of people get food from there and depend on them, so we like to help them out,” said Riley Miller, CVMS eighth-grade student council member. Last year, the school collected 2,733 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank.

CHS donates to truckload Salvation Army By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield High School Student Council coordinated the Salvation Army Angel Tag Drive this holiday season and supplied the Salvation Army with a variety of items for 300 Angel Tags, with donations coming from Student Council members and CHS staff. The truckload of toys was loaded at Canfield High School and headed to the Salvation Army distribution center Dec. 13. Canfield High School Student Council President Melissa Dahman said it was an amazing feeling to be able to donate so many items to the Salvation Army. “It’s an amazing feeling. I’m humbled to be able to donate so many presents this holiday season. I just keep thinking of the kids these gifts will go to, and knowing that they won’t be left out on Christmas is just amazing,” Dahman said. Junior Class Representative Dominic DeRamo said people donated not only toys, but everyday items as well. “The majority of the donations we collected were toys, but people also donated clothes, hats and gloves and everyday necessities that the children will need for the winter,” DeRamo said. The Student Council Board Members will also travel to the Salvation Army distribution center to help parents ‘shop’ for their children. “Our students will go to the distribution center on the 19th and help parents and guardians pick out gifts for their children. This is a fun day for our students, as they get to help the parents ‘shop’ and get to see where their donations are going and really have a great experience,” said Renee English, Student Council advisor. Clare Crescimanno, Student Council vice president, said the biggest thing about the Salvation Army Angel Tag Drive is seeing everyone come together. “The biggest about Angel Tags is getting to see everyone come together. Being able to see the whole process, from taking a tag to loading the truck, is just perfect for the season,” Crescimanno said. Canfield High School Student Council was the largest donor last year for the Salvation Army Angel Tag Drive.

Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County and Boardman Subaru collaborated for Subaru’s Share the Love Event. During the event, Subaru will donate $250 for every Subaru vehicle sold or leased to a participating charity, such as Meal on Wheels. Subaru shares love with Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County joined with Boardman Subaru for Subaru’s Share the Love Event from Nov. 16, 2017 until Jan. 2, 2018. The two organizations are working together for the sixth year as a part of a national partnership between Subaru of America and Meals on Wheels of America. They collaborated to raise awareness for charitable work of Meals on Wheels and the end of the year sales and giving event with Subaru. Subaru will donate $250 to a participating charity for every Subaru vehicle leased or sold during the event. The company will give back to Meals on Wheels of America if the customer lists the organization as their charity of choice. The

money will then be distributed to the state and divided among Ohio’s Meals on Wheels programs. “It’s great building community relationships,“ said Kathy Esseniyi, president of Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County. She thanked Boardman Subaru and owner Rob Fellman for their local partnership. Along with the donations, Boardman Subaru sent volunteer drivers to go deliver meals with the Meals on Wheels volunteers. Together, the two organizations are helping fight against hunger in the area. Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County also thanked their volunteers during the event. They displayed a tree at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center’s winter celebration with heart-shaped

pictures of their volunteers as ornaments to show, as Esseniyi said, “the volunteers are the heart of our program.“ The organization also gave out information regarding Subaru’s Share the Love Event and information about their group at the winter celebration. Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County delivers meals Monday through Friday. They serve an average of 400 nutritious, well-balanced meals a week. The organization began in 1979 and provides service throughout Youngstown and the surrounding cities. The group always looks for new volunteer drivers, but they have an especially hard time during the winter season. For more information on their service or to help volunteer, the organization can be reached at 330-744-3583. Neighbors | Zack Shively

Marilyn Williams used the acorns to help the children work on their math skills. She had the children count the number of acorns aloud. They played a game where the children subtracted one acorn from their pile throughout a story.

Children learn about acorns by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Ford Nature Center invited parents and children to its learning program on the acorn on Nov. 17. Marilyn Williams led the event, titled “Tales for Tots: In a Nutshell.” She gave the students story time, a small walk and a craft during the program. She had the children, all ages between 2 and 3, color a picture of an oak tree before the event started. Then she introduced the acorn and explained that they grow into oak trees. The children sat on the floor to listen to Williams read a story to them. The story covered the life of an acorn and how the seeds become oak trees. She asked the children to sit in a circle and gave each child five acorns. She read a piece where a squirrel took an acorn. After each time, the children subtracted one acorn from their total. They worked on both literacy and math skills in

this activity. After the counting activity, Williams walked to a board of animals and they talked about which animals eat acorns. The students knew that squirrels eat them, but they were surprised to find out that deer and wolves eat acorns too. Williams led the group outside and onto a trail in the back of the Ford Nature Center. She asked the children to find two oak leaves and five acorns, which they did. She stopped at a large oak tree to show the children how large of a tree the small acorn becomes. The children ended the program with a craft when they returned inside. Williams handed the children a squirrel cut-out, a piece of green paper and leaves. The children glued the squirrel to the paper. Then, they glued the leaves to the back of the squirrel to give it a textured and colorful tail. Finally, they glued one of the acorns they found outside to the squirrel’s hands.
