Poland honors veterans with wreath ceremony By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland Cemetery hosted a Wreath Ceremony on Dec. 12 for the Wreaths Across America event. The event was hosted by the Poland Village Hine Fund. The ceremony started in the morning with boy scouts, veterans, family and active military placing seven wreaths each on a stand. Each wreath represented something different about the
military and the soldiers. Wreaths Across America provided other wreaths for family members and friends to place on the gravestones of those who had fought for the United States. Wreaths Across America started about 25 years ago, and on Dec. 12 alone will visit close to 1,000 cemeteries across the United States to perform the Wreath Ceremony. Hugh Earnhardt, a Navy Veteran and master of ceremonies
for Wreaths Across America, spoke during the ceremony and explained what each wreath represented and what the ceremony was all about. “We move a round doing this hoping that when we’re all done, somebody in the community will think it’s a good idea and try to do it every year,” said Earnhardt. The wreaths and other items are supplied through donations and fund raising. Hosting a
Wreath Ceremony is free for the community and brings awareness to veterans during the holiday season. Hot chocolate, cider and snacks were provided for guests after the ceremony finished. Wreaths Across America has been around for several years and hopes the tradition will continue. They hope that communities all over will pick up the idea and make it a tradition of their own.

Bikers’ funds offer families help for the holidays T he Aut ism Societ y a nnounced the Mike Hull Memorial Family Mini Grant. These grants, up to $500, are to support children and adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and families that include an individual w ith ASD. The grant cycle ran Nov. 1 through Dec. 10, or until allocated grant funds were depleted. A focus of this project is to reach out and serve individuals and families that are not able to access existing support systems for various reasons, such as eligibility criteria, age and waiting lists. To qualify, the family must be residents of the Mahoning,
Trumbull or Columbiana counties in Ohio, The term “family” may include an immediate family member or other relative, a person providing foster care or a legal guardian or custodian, but does not include a person or entity who acts in a paid employment capacity. These grants are funding opportunities that will only be offered once a year and are time limited. The Family Mini Grant is funded with proceeds from the Annual Mike Hull Memorial Poker Run for Autism that takes place in August. More than 60 motorcyclists took part in the ride in honor of Mike Hull, a be-
loved husband, father, brother and grandfather with a cherished granddaughter on the autism spectrum. The all-day event featured a 70-mile poker ride that visited establishments in the region, kicking off with a breakfast and bike blessing, ending with a live concert and offering an afternoon of free bowling for individuals living with a disability. Last year, the group presented the inaugural grant in the form of an iPad Air 3G and Otter Box case. It was presented to Scott Lewis of Youngstown. A nonverbal 26-year-old with autism spectrum disorder. Scott used the device for easier communication with his family.

Children bear-y excited about learning By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children gathered at Ford Nature Center on Dec. 3 for a class all about Polar Bears, just in time for the snow to fall. Hillary Lenton, a naturalist at Mill Creek Parks, led the class and got the children excited to learn. She had books, activities and crafts to help the children become more educated on polar bears.Lenton started off the class by having the children color a polar bear
picture to get them into the swing of things. She then read a book titled, “A Baby Polar Bear Story,” by Martha E. H. Rustad. This book taught the children how polar bears live and how they grow up. W hen the story was over, the children bundled up and made their way outside to play a camouflage game. There were brow n bea rs a nd pola r bea rs h idden around the yard of Ford Nature Center and the children had to look around to find the different bears.

The children enjoyed being able to go outside and run around instead of sitting inside all day. After finding all of the hidden bears, the children headed back inside to play another game. “We’re going to pretend to be polar bears. We are going to play musical ice sheets,” said Lenton. The children “swam” from iceberg to iceberg like a game of musical chairs. Each time the song played during the game stopped, an iceberg was removed from
the water. “Let it Go” from the “Frozen” soundtrack was the perfect song to play. T he st udents ended t he class by making their own polar bear ornament to decorate their homes with in time for winter. Classes like the Polar Bear class enable children to learn about different parts of nature while doing hands-on act iv it ies to f u r t her t hei r knowledge. The Poland Local School District Board of Education approved Ryan Williams as the new football coach at Poland Seminary High School. Williams takes over a Poland football program previously led by Mark Brungard from 20042015. Brungard resigned in early November. “Coach Williams brings enthusiasm, dedication and a true love of the game to our Poland football program,” said Poland Local School Superintendent David Janofa in a press release. “His vision for the program is to continue to promote the passion of Bulldog football on and off the field.” Williams served the past 11 years as the defensive coordinator for the Poland Bulldogs. Prior to his time at Poland, Williams spent three years as an assistant football coach at Austintown Fitch High School. Williams has also served as the varsity boys track coach at Poland Seminary High School the past eight years. “His passion for the game, his experience under Coach Brungard in the Poland Football Program and his passion for coaching the total student-athlete all led to his selection.” said Poland Local Schools Athletic Administrator Brian Banfield. Williams is a graduate of Boardman High School and Cleveland State University. He and his wife, Alicia, currently reside in Poland with their children, Nate and Leanne.

Happily Ever After Courtney Turnbull v Patrick Todd YOUNGSTOWN
Courtney Turnbull became the bride of Patrick Todd at 2 p.m. Aug. 15 during a ceremony officiated by the Rev. John Ettinger at St. Christine Church. A reception followed in the church’s parish center. The bride wore an ivory gown with a trumpet skirt that featured a sweetheart neckline and bodice decorated with crystals and pearls. She completed her ensemble with a crystal headpiece and crystal and pearl bangle bracelet. Matron of honor was Tiffany Turjonis, the bride’s sister.
