The Holborn Herb Growers maintain the gardens at the village in Canfield Fair grounds as

well as the gardens at Boardman Park.

They have an annual tea in September as a fundraiser to help with the expense of buying flowers for these gardens.

The menu for the evening will be chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, french toast sticks, bacon, Canadian bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. This event, which will take place on Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Playtime at your library Read a story at the Boardman library on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for children who are ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Night owl Winter stories and a craft will be offered for children ages 4-5 on Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Preschoolers must attend this 30-minute story time with an adult.

Now is a great time to build a new character at the start of the library’s third campaign. Go on dangerous quests with daring fights and hopefully you roll a D20 to save the day. Boardman students craft for a cause

Boa rd m a n C enter M idd le School st udents gat hered together to create crafts to benefit their community.

School counselor Mindy DePietro said that this is the fifth year all of the fifth-grade students, along with the WEB leaders, created tie blankets and bookmarks to give to local organizations.

“It’s a fun craft that everyone can get involved in and they love doing it for a good cause,” DePietro said.

Forty blankets were constructed by students to be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital.

DePietro said the idea came from their first year working with WEB leaders when a student at Boardman was a patient at Akron Children’s and received a blanket.

“She said it really meant a lot to her and now we want to make sure that is something we continue,” DePietro said.

She explained that there is currently a fifth-grade student who is a patient at Akron Children’s that the students will make a special blanket and cards for him.

“We want him to know that he is part of our family even though he is not at the school,”

DePietro said.

Along with blankets the students made 420 laminated bookmarks to donate to local nursing homes.

Beeghly Oaks, Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman and Vista Center will all receive a portion of the bookmarks made by students.

“Bookmarks can be used year round, and they are coloring more interesting designs,” DePietro said.

Along with the fifth-grade class, 80 sixth-graders designated as WEB leaders assisted in the project.

WEB leaders are students who apply for leadership roles, and spend the year mentoring a group of 8-10 fifth-grade students.

The program is in conjunction with the LINK leaders in Boardman High School.

“They are like the leaders of the school, they are our role models,” DePietro said.

She explained to become a WEB leaders students have to have good grades, be active in their school and above all be kind.

“They are able to foster that relationship, give them advice, get to know them with relationships that are both academic and social,” DePietro said. “I always tell them they are our eyes and ears.”

Friends of the Public Library wrap gifts

Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County set up a free gift wrapping station at Boardman Barnes and Noble on Dec. 7.

Volunteer friends from the East library hosted the event along with Development Director Deborah Liptak.

“We are asking for donations for the gift wrapping and that will benefit the Friends of the Library,” Liptak said.

Members of the Poland swim team also volunteered at the event, raising money for teen programs at the library branches.

“The friends are the glue that holds the library together,” Liptak said. “So many people volunteer their time to support the library.”

the Library program. All libraries other than Austintown, Boardman and Poland are part of the Friends of the Youngstown and Mahoning County library network, which benefits all of the libraries.

“We are unique because we have a network of libraries that support each other, no other library in the area has this its very unique,” Liptak said.

During the event, Barnes and Noble also donated a portion of sales of books and coffee from Starbucks for community members who said they would support the program.

All proceeds from both went to supporting library programs.

“We really want to encourage as many people as possible to be a part of the friends, they are the libraries number one supporters,” Liptak said.

Joining the Friends of the Library group is $10 and includes monthly meetings with guest speakers. To join, community members can contact the development office of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County or fill out an application online at www.libraryvisit.org.

“The friends are the libraries main representatives, they understand the importance of the libraries and they want to see them continue,” Liptak said.

Youngstown State University student Morgan Brandt picked up a box full of cards and letters from Boardman. She will deliver them to the Blue Star Mothers of America to get to soldiers in time for the holidays.

Students team up with alum to send holiday cheer Stockings for Soldiers.

That’s what Youngstow n State Univrsity student Morgan Brandt and some of her communications classmates are calling their volunteer care package project intended to brighten the holidays for soldiers serving overseas.

They wanted to send something special from home.

Morga n, who g raduated from Boardman High School in 2017, thought they could do so much more with a little

help from her alma mater. She reached out to Boardman Local Schools, who in turn let principals know about the plan to send handmade cards and letters to military men and women who would not be home for the holidays.

In just a few days, brightly colored cards from the elementary schools mingled with sketches and letters from middle schoolers came from the classes. The messages included hopes for happy futures and remarks of

appreciation. High school English classes sent longer handwritten letters to soldiers with encouragement and gratitude as the recurring themes.

Morgan said she was excited to see so many cards and letters.

She delivered them to the Blue Star Mothers of America organization to be distributed before the New Year.

Split Pea Challenge serves up nutrition lesson at BCIS Split peasare the first food item that Second Harvest Food Bank proposed in its new initiative to encourage children to use and enjoy healthier foods.

Boardman Center Intermediate School is first to take on the Split Pea Challenge.

BCIS social studies teachers jumped on board, offering extra credit for students willing to research split pea recipes, make something at home, take photos and present the outcome in class.

“We expected split pea soup, but never imagined there would be split pea brownies, pudding and fudge, or hummus, snack mix and split pea burgers,” said social studies teacher Jenn Dravecky. “We had more than 300 students take home a bag of split peas – some 25 cases of peas provided by the Second Harvest. In most cases, the students ate and enjoyed the recipes they made.”

Two years ago, BCIS and Second Harvest, along with the Boardman Lions Club, partnered to open the valley’s first ever y day in-school food pantry. The school’s pantry continues to meet the need for dozens of Boardman families every week.

In December, Second Harvest will select another non-perishable food item for students to research and devise recipes they would enjoy.
