Local children receive holiday gifts and cheer Hundreds of children ages newborn to 10, who otherwise might not have an opportunity to be part of a positive holiday event, enjoyed some holiday cheer recently thanks to Meridian HealthCare’s annual Breakfast with Santa event. Student volunteers from several area schools who are members of the Meridian-sponsored PANDA Leaders Club collected toys to distribute to the youngsters via the PANDA Leaders Club Giving Tree event. They also helped serve a free breakfast, led holiday craft events, and coordinated photos with Santa at the Breakfast with Santa event, which took place on Dec. 9 at the Downtown YMCA. The children who were invited to Breakfast with Santa are clients of the many area nonprofit social service agencies who work with Meridian. PANDA Leaders Club members are students at area middle schools and high schools, part of a program that encourages young people to make positive choices in their lives while developing plans to deal with issues facing young people today. Students from various local Mahoning and Trumbull County schools, including Lowellville, Niles Middle School, Poland Middle School, Struthers, Boardman Glenwood Middle
School and Boardman Center Intermediate School, participated in this year’s PANDA Leaders Club Giving Tree event, collecting more than 200 presents at their schools. Meridian employees also donated gifts. Any presents that remain after this year’s event will be distributed to children in various Meridian HealthCare programs and other donation programs throughout the Valley. This year, The Hidden Cafe donated a hot breakfast for all attendees including French toast casserole, potatoes, eggs and sausage. Other local businesses who contributed include: Giant Eagle (Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland locations), Struthers IGA, Arby’s in Austintown and Taco Bell in Boardman. Subaru shares love with Meals on Wheels By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County joined with Boardman Subaru for Subaru’s Share the Love Event from Nov. 16, 2017 until Jan. 2, 2018. The two organizations are working together for the sixth year as a part of a national partnership between Subaru of America and Meals on Wheels of America. They collaborated to raise awareness for charitable work of Meals on Wheels and the end of the year sales and giving event with Subaru. Subaru will donate $250 to a participating charity for every Subaru vehicle leased or sold during the event. The company will give back to Meals on Wheels of America if the customer lists the organization as their charity of choice. The money will then be distributed to the state and divided among Ohio’s Meals on Wheels programs. “It’s great building community relationships,“ said Kathy Esseniyi, president of Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County. She thanked Boardman Subaru and owner Rob Fellman for their local partnership.
Along with the donations, Boardman Subaru sent volunteer drivers to go deliver meals with the Meals on Wheels volunteers. Together, the two organizations are helping fight against hunger in the area. Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County also thanked their volunteers during the event. They displayed a tree at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center’s winter celebration with heart-shaped pictures of their volunteers as ornaments to show, as Esseniyi said, “the volunteers are the heart of our program.“ The organization also gave out information regarding Subaru’s Share the Love Event and information about their group at the winter celebration. Meals on Wheels of the Mahoning County delivers meals Monday through Friday. They serve an average of 400 nutritious, well-balanced meals a week. The organization began in 1979 and provides service throughout Youngstown and the surrounding cities. The group always looks for new volunteer drivers, but they have an especially hard time during the winter season. For more information on their service or to help volunteer, the organization can be reached at 330-744-3583.

Annual shoe and sock drive underway Ankle & Foot Care Centers has launched its 20th annual holiday shoe and sock drive with the goal of delivering more than 500 pairs of shoes and hundreds of pairs of socks to local residents through the Salvation Army early next year. The group of foot and ankle physicians and surgeons and its staff are collecting new or nearly new shoes and new socks at all 20 of its offices in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Ashtabula and Portage counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania through Jan. 5, 2018. The annual drive has col-
lected thousands of shoes and socks since it began in 1998. “It is very important for individuals to have good socks and shoes to protect their feet, especially during the winter months,” said Michael Vallas, practice administrator. “Our doctors and staff have made it a priority this holiday season to support families in need by supplying adequate footwear for people of all ages.” The drive accepts shoes from children’s sizes to adult, both men and women, and all types of shoes from athletic to dress to casual. Boots in children’s sizes
are especially needed. New socks of all sizes are accepted as well. Ankle & Foot Care Centers is the region’s largest podiatric care provider, with physicians and surgeons serving patients at 20 local offices, located in Alliance, Andover, Austintown, Boardman (2), Campbell, Champion, Columbiana, Cornersburg, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Greenville (Pa.), Liberty, Niles, Poland, Ravenna, Salem, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Specific locations and other information are located on the group’s website at www.ankleandfootcare.com.

Glenwood students give ‘hope’

Since Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, residents have been struggling to meet basic needs. The devastation prompted Boardman Glenwood Junior High student leaders to join a relief effort and contribute much needed supplies to Convoy of Hope. Glenwood students collected pallets of bottled water and packages of diapers for two weeks. BGJHS physical education teacher Danielle Siembida and the girls’ volleyball team also raised $650 to donate to the efforts. These were donated to the Convoy of Hope collection at New Life Church in Poland.
