Celebrating Art, Culture and Jazz in our Community It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the campus of Youngstown State University for our 20th annual Summer Festival of the Arts.

Over the course of two days, thousands of visitors of all ages from throughout the region will converge on campus to participate in an array of activities, including dozens of music and dance performances featuring our own YSU students and alumni.

There truly is something for everyone - from the wonderful paintings, woodworking, jewelry and other original artwork by more than 75 talented artists on the core of campus to shows at the Ward Beecher Planetarium and a variety of ethnic foods at the Festival of Nations.

And it doesn’t end there. We encourage you to check out other happenings near campus, including the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Summerfest on Walnut Street, Youngstown Comic Con at the Covelli Center, the Friday night concert in downtown Youngstown featuring the Fabulous Flashbacks and Youngstown Wine & Jazz featuring pianist Jeff Lorber.

Thanks goes out to our great Summer Festival of the Arts team in the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication, who works hard every year to preserve this event as an anchor for one of the greatest weekends of the summer. We also thank the city of Youngstown, the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors

PARKING Free parking is available in the Wick Avenue M30 deck and on the first level of the Lincoln Avenue M60 deck. Surface lots along Fifth Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and Wick Avenue are also open.

Fabulous Flashbacks and Youngstown Wine and Jazz The stage is located on the street near Central Square near Boardman Street. Parking is available in many locations Downtown. Tickets for each concert may be purchased at the gate prior to the event. Patrons should bring a lawn chair for each concert.

Make It a Weekend of Fun Some of the best entertainment, ethnic, cultural and arts events in the Valley will occur this upcoming weekend in addition to the YSU Summer Festival of the Arts as the City of Youngstown, Mahoning County Convention & Visitors Bureau, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, JAC Live and Youngstown State University work together to produce a weekend of events.

St. Nicholas Greek Summerfest kicks off the weekend July 5-8 and includes live music and dancing, Greek food and pastries, and a display of cultural memorabilia. Hours are: Thursday, July 5, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, July 6 and 7, 11:00 a.m.

– 10:00 p.m.; and Sunday, July 8, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Take

out lunch service is available on Thursday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.

An opening night event on Friday, July 6, will bring the Fabulous Flashbacks together for a second reunion concert on stage near Central Square in Downtown Youngstown. Doors will open at 6:30; Tickets are $12 in advance at the Covelli Centre Box Office or at Ticketmaster.com, or $15 at the gate.

For the eighth year, a Jazz concert will occur in Downtown Youngstown as part of the weekend. Youngstown Wine and Jazz will be Saturday, July 7 featuring Grammy award winning Jazz fusion keyboardist Jeff Lorber. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the stage set up on Boardman Street near the

Central Square. Several wineries and breweries have committed to the event, and will be adjacent to the stage. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Covelli Centre Box Office, at www.ticketmaster.com or at the gate. Guests should bring a lawn chair to all three outdoor concerts.

Youngstown Comic Con will occur Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8. The event, presented by All American Cards & Comics, includes comics, art and cosplay, and remains at the Covelli Centre to allow for additional vendors and activities. The convention will include over 125 vendors, with guests Jim Steranko and Jim Shooter among others. Admission is $15 per day available at youngstowncomiccon.com or at the gate.

Alumni Society Offers Ladies Day Out for Fabulous Female Alumni and Friends It was so successful last year that the Office of Alumni Engagement is continuing Ladies Day Out! Timed to coincide with the Summer Festival of the Arts, it’s scheduled for Sunday, July 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Williamson College of Business Administration’s atrium.

A n e le g a nt c h a m p a g ne brunch will be served; a presentation given by Betty Jo Licata, Ph.D., Dean of the Wil-

liamson College of Business Administration; door prizes; and tours of the WCBA will cap off an afternoon of shopping at the Summer Festival of the Arts.

Tickets are $20.00 for YSU Alumnae and $25 for YSU friends. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Catherine Cala in Alumni Engagement at 330941-2752 or cacala@ysu.edu.

Festival of Nations is Window on the World We live in a culturally and ethnically rich community where it is still very common for families to engage in long standing traditions like planting a garden, canning vegetables, participating in various customs for milestones such as baptisms, birthdays, First Communions, holidays and weddings. We may not like to admit it, but we have all been disappointed at outof-town weddings that didn’t include a cookie table! Who among us can forget those treasured childhood memories, es-

pecially revived with our own children or grandchildren?

The Festival of Nations at the Summer Festival of the Arts offers wonderful evidence of those traditions and of the memories most of us have, whether we are Polish, Italian, Latino, Greek, Asian or any one of the many “peoples of the Mahoning Valley!”

Instrument Donation at This Year’s Event This year’s Summer Festival of the Arts welcomes The Summit in presenting the “Marilyn Stroud Music Alive Program,” helping young musicians in our local schools realize their dreams and learn the joys of playing an instrument.

If you have an unloved, dusty and forgotten “gently used” musical instrument in your attic, closet or basement consider

bringing it with you to the Summer Arts Fest where members of The Summit team will collect them. After any needed repair, the instruments will be placed in the hands of kids whose families can’t afford the expense of buying their child a musical instrument.

Look for The Summit tent near the Main Information Booth.

You’re in luck. Both the Arms Museum on Wick Avenue and the Tyler History Center in Downtown Youngstown will be open with Buy One Get One Free Admission both days.

Look for the giant yellow Iron Lung replica at the Melnick Medical Museum tent in the Festival of Nations area near Maag Library. Then take a look at the display of historic dental items nearby.

The Children’s Hands On Art Tent sponsored by Schwebel’s is the place to be with dozens of make and take craft projects where children of all ages will have fun through guided artwork at a variety of stations. And, both the Mahoning County Green Team and Green Youngstown will be near the tent offering up their recycled craft projects. Bring your fresh faces for a makeover with the Department of Theatre and Dance’s Wendy Akers who will be face painting kids young and old!

The McDonough Museum of Art is open both days from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. through the construction, so make time for a visit to see their summer exhibitions. Stop in for a cool breather and take in a movie in the lecture hall, and don’t forget to color on the Federal Frenzy mural.

OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology in Downtown Youngstown will be open both days from 10:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. Regular Admission rates apply for both days, but on Saturday, July 7 visitors can make a free Marshmallow Launcher using physics to make a device to launch tasty treats.
