Have a picture taken with a rescue bunny Legacy Dog Rescue and F5RS, Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies and Feathered Friends, will host a picture with a rescue bunny event from 12-4 p.m. on April 13, at Family Video, located at 4385 Kirk Road in Austintown. The cost is $8 to have a picture taken with a real therapy bunny or two, and the photo will be printed on-site to take home. There will also be baked goods available for purchase to help continue the lifesaving efforts of both groups.

Saxon club offers porkkraut dinner event The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner event on March 24 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $9.50 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Mercy Health Foundation offers scholarships Students enrolled at Mercy College of Ohio – St. Elizabeth Campus, and Mercy Health employees, their spous-

es and children have until March 29 to apply for nursing scholarships provided by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley for the 2019-2020 academic year. Last year, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley awarded more than $87,000 in scholarships to 47 students. To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, or be a nurse pursuing a degree in hospital or healthcare administration.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA to have 15th anniversary The Tri-Gold chapter of ABWA will host its 15th anniversary with the theme Crystal Showers Sprinkle Flowers. The event will take place on April 10 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. This is an evening dinner meeting with a social period beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Reservations are due by April and can be made by contacting Sharon Pasquale at 330-793-6208. Entertainment will be announced.

The cost to attend is $21.50 with the choice of stuffed flounder or chicken francaise, swiss steak jardinere, tossed salad, red skin potatoes and a dessert of cake and ice cream.

Friendly Squares host April square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/ low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Austintow n Intermediate School celebrated international Pi Day on March 14.

Students spent the day working on fun games based on various math concepts.

“It’s just a fun way for each of the classes to get involved and really do some interactive learning of different math concepts,” said third-grade math teacher Joya Villani who headed up the

events.

Villani said that students in third grade spent the day learning about rays, and finding their area.

Fourth-graders spent the day in “Angel City” and fifth-graders learned about measurements.

“We love to take the time to really explore different mathematical concepts,” Villani said.

Along with each graders individual projects, students were able to use their estimation skills to guess how many Star-

bursts were in a large bin outside of the lunch room.

The students in each grade who guessed the closest took home a five pound bag of the candy.

Villani said the student favorite of the events for that day were the pie your principal challenge.

“Essentially, each student was given a story problem to solve, everyone who solved it correctly was entered into the competition,” Villani said.

Four students from each grades lunch period who answered the question correctly were chosen to throw pies at Principal Angel Owens or Tim Pappagallo.

Sixteen students total were given the privilege of covering their chosen principal in pie.

“The students really love it, it’s a great way to get them involved,” Villani said. “And the principals were all on board, which says a lot about the support we have at AIS.”

Pasta dinner fundraiser to take place on March 24 The Knights of Columbus #3930 will be sponsoring a pasta dinner fundraiser to benefit Matt Johnson who lost his mother in a car accident. The event will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, on March 24 from 12-5 p.m. Dinners include pasta, meatballs, tossed salad, bread/ butter, dessert and beverages.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction. Dinners for adults are $8, children ages 6-12 are $4 and there is no charge for children ages 5 and under.

Preschoolers celebrate Chinese New Year

Preschoolers at St. Joseph’s Early Childhood Learning Center celebrated the Chinese New Year on Feb. 28.

Teacher Jennifer Hlasta organized the event, which she has been coordinating for about four years.

“We don’t get to celebrate the new year here because students are gone for winter break, so we do this as a fun way to incorporate other cultures,” Hlasta said.

Students read “The Dancing Dragon” by Marcia Vaughan, using the book as a model for their performance.

To prepare Hlasta said she had students create themed decorations, including paper pandas, streamers and more.

Students also helped create a dragon, paper lanterns and confetti poppers to use during their performance.

During the event, students walked through the hallway while holding the dragon and lanterns, singing a song from “The Dancing Dragon.”

Family members watched as students performed the dance of the dragon, with is historically performed during the lantern festival on the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration.

At the end of their performance, students used their homemade confetti poppers.

“It is a lot of fun, the students like it and they don’t even notice they are learning something new,” Hlasta said.

The Austintown Fitch speech and debate team competed at the state tournament at Jackson-Massillon High School the weekend of March 2.

Thirty-four out of 47 students on the team qualified for the state tournament.

While competing against all 91 teams in the state of Ohio, Fitch placed ninth overall. Additionally, the team received two awards of excellence in both interpretation and rhetoric events for advancing 17 competitors to quarters, semis and final round.

Three students also qualified for the national tournament, which will take place in Dallas in June. Those students are seniors David Gunger and Haley Farrow and junior Johnna Blystone.

Individuals advancing in the state competition included: in Congressional Debate, Christa Schall, T’ynah Brown and Elise Williams advanced to quarter finals; in Declama-

tion, Romond Duval and Taylor Baer advanced to semi finals, with Duval placing eighth and Baer placing 10th in the state; in Dramatic Interpretation, Amber Sierra and Cecilia Segretario advanced to quarter finals, with Segretario placing 10th in the state; in Duo Interpretation, Matt Bohr and Dante Bernard advanced to quarterfinals and Sarah Linton and Miranda Truslow to final round, with Linton and Truslow placing sixth in the state; in International Extemporaneous Speaking, David Gunger and Jeremy Selby to quarter finals; in Original Oratory, Johnna Blystone to final round, placing second in the state; in Program Oral Interpretation, Haley Farrow to quarter finals and John Zimmerman to semi finals, with Zimmerman placing eighth in the state and in United States Extemporaneous Speaking, Alex Giovannone and Kyle Anderson to quarter finals and Faith Marscio to semi finals, with Marscio placing 11th in the state.

Austintown Intermediate School’s Parent Teacher Association hosted its annual Family Bingo night on March 1.

PTA president Patty Ritter said this is the fourth year for the event, and the theme is Candy Crush.

“This is my favorite because it is super family oriented,” Ritter said.

During the event students and their families pay a small fee to play bingo in the schools cafeteria.

Along with Bingo, the PTA hosts a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle with prizes geared toward intermediate students and their families.

Candy themed props were available to take silly pictures with, according to Ritter, matching the theme of the night.

“We have a lot of fun here,” Ritter said. “Everyone of any age really enjoys this event.”

The PTA also sells concessions throughout the night, with all proceeds from the event going to the PTA. “This benefits the kids of the school, all the money we make goes back into them,” Ritter said.

She explained that most of the funds raised from the event will go to Fun Day and fifth-grade

Girls meet once per month at the Main library for the free Girls Who Code program, where students grades 6-12 are able to complete 12 weeks of coding lessons.

Young girls learn coding at Main library

The Ma in libra r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County hosted the Girls Who Code program starting in January, teaching girls grades six through twelve coding basics.

Librarian Sarah Blott said the program was designed to allow girls to to learning coding a their own pace.

“It really allows them to work independently,” Blott said.

Two girls attend the program full time, working online at the Girls Who Code web site, where they follow online lessons.

Girls Who Code is a national non-profit designed to lower the gender divide in coding industries.

“STEM is becoming huge now

and this program really tries to make sure young women are given just as many opportunities to explore that as boys do,” Blott said.

She explained that the group meets once a week on Wednesdays in a computer lad at the library.

The girls in the group work for two hours online each day, learning at their own pace.

Blott said that the program will culminate in a reception, showing off their hard work by displaying their final projects.

The reception will take place at the end of the program in April.

“It’s things like this that matter a lot to young women who are trying to explore what they want to do when they get older,” Blott said.

With more than 40 locations in the Mill Creek MetroParks system needing attention, more participants are needed to lend a hand and participate in this year’s Earth Day Cleanup.

Although more than 300 scouts and volunteers are expected to scour Mill Creek MetroParks in recognition of Earth Day to remove winter buildup of litter and debris, more help is needed. The cleanup is co-sponsored by the Whispering Pines District, Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks.

The cleanup will take place on April 27, throughout Mill Creek MetroParks. In 36 years, more than 12,300 participants have volunteered more than 37,400 hours to clean various areas of the MetroParks.

Just in the past 17 years, more than 2,600 bags of trash and 1,300 bags of recyclables along with numerous loose items such as tires, toys, furniture, pipes, wood crates, electronic items and even the proverbial kitchen sink, have been removed. Each year, there are fewer bags of trash but more bags of recyclables.

As in years past, sponsorship of this event is in cooperation with the Recycling Division of the Mahoning County Green Team.

They will provide volunteers with trash and recycling bags, gloves and grab-its, as well as pencils, certificates and car litter bags for each participant.

This event is also in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks

off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants who take action in their communities every year to create positive change and lasting impact. Details can be found at https://www.kab.org/our-partners.

The MetroParks hosts the event by facilitating the organization and registration of groups, sites and supplies.

Eagle Scouts and volunteers to be honored Whispering Pines District Great Trail Council Boy Scouts of America will host the annual District Awards Dinner, recognizing volunteers of 2018.

This year’s dinner will take place on April 7 at St. James Episcopal Church, located at 7640 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman, and will celebrate scouting achievements of Eagle Scouts, scouters and scouting units in the Whispering Pines District. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live scouting ideals daily.

The theme is Stambaugh Another 100, celebrating the 100th year of Camp Stambaugh located in Canfield.

This recognition dinner will honor the 27 scouts who have earned their Eagle Scout Award, the highest award possible in Boy Scouts, in 2018.

Also being honored will be Cub Scout packs, Scout BSA troops, venturing crews and scout volunteers.

The highlight of the evening

will be the awarding of the District Award of Merit, the highest honor the Whispering Pines District can bestow upon a volunteer. The award is available to scouters who have rendered service of an outstanding nature at the district level. Recipients of this award are registered scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.

Boardman Park to host Maple Syrup Festival Boardman Park will host the 42nd annual Maple Syrup Festival and Boardman Rotary Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m.2 p.m. on March 23-24 and from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. March 30-31.

The Maple Syrup Festival will offer outdoor activities, such as walking to Chester Long Pavilion to observe the park staff demonstrating how maple trees are tapped, the sap collected and boiled down to make syrup.

Attendees may also learn scouting skills from Boy Scout Troop 60 and wagon rides through the park trails will also be available.

Inside the Lariccia Family Community Center, attendees can observe the talents of the Western Reserve Woodcarvers, visit the park table to purchase

local maple syrup, see and feel taxidermy woodland creatures such as a coyote and fox, view artwork from Boardman Center Intermediate School and Glenwood Junior High School and the parents of Boy Scout Troop 60 will be having a basket raffle.

AFHS attends Financial Starting Point event

Austintown Fitch High School students traveled to Youngstown State University for the 11th annual Financial Starting Point event on Feb. 19.

The Associated School Employees Credit Union and the Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley partnered to host the event.

“Credit unions have always had an interest in teaching financial literacy at our schools,” said ASECU President Michael Kurish. “Through collaboration with JA we have access to many more schools than previously.”

Austintown Fitch teacher Jill Martin escorted more than 100 students from Fitch.

“I teach all of these things,” Martin said. “So this gives them some hands on experience plus they get to interface with some local business people and I think that’s really important.”

Eleven schools attended the event, including Fitch, bringing more than 400 high school juniors and seniors to YSU’s campus.

Michele Merkel, the president of JA, said the event was created more than a decade ago because of a need for financial literacy in local schools.

Kurish said that the credit union approached JA to help bridge this gap.

“It’s important because soon these students are going to be put into our community,” Kurish said. “While they are in the schools they are certainly learning all the basics but life skills are sometimes not as stressed as much.”

Today, the event is takes place during five hours with three break off sessions

for students to attend, along with a reality day scenario.

Merkel said each student attends three 45 minute sessions covering credit, investing and life skills and budgeting.

Local volunteers and financial experts teach each session.

“Our programs are delivered by volunteers in the community,” Merkel said.

“We rely on them and their support.”

The reality day portion is what originally made up the entirety of the event, according to Merkel.

She said the students are broken up into groups, and given a budget based on a certain career path and education level.

Students then walk to different tables, examining budgeting costs and breaking down how to best spend their given income.

“Understanding what you’re making monthly when you get a job is very important,” Merkel said. “We have some tough scenarios.”

Martin said the event helps students find a fuller understanding of class room lessons.

“You have to allocate a certain amount of money, which brings in all the stuff we talked about in class,” Martin said.

“It’s a good culminating activity for credit, investing and budgeting.”

Keynote speaker Judge Molly Johnson spoke at the event, along with Betty Jo Licata, Dean of the YSU College of Business Administration.

“These things are so important for the kids future,” Martin said. “Learning about how to get a credit card, how to manage your money, how to avoid debt, the significance if you file bankruptcy these are all key.”
