Welcome to the YSU Summer Festival of the Arts! Celebrating Art, Culture and Jazz in our Community It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the campus of Youngstown State University for our 19th annual Summer Festival of the Arts. Over the course of two days, t housands of visitors of all ages from throughout the region TRESSEL w ill converge on campus to participate in an array of activities, including dozens of music and dance performances featuring our own YSU students and alumni. There truly is something for everyone – from the wonderful paintings, woodworking, jewelry and other original artwork by more than 75 talented artists on the core of campus to shows at the Ward Beecher Planetarium to a variety of ethnic foods at the Festival of Nations. And it doesn’t end there. We encourage you to check out other happenings near campus, including the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Sum-
merfest on Walnut Street, the Friday night concert in downtown Youngstown featuring t he Fabu lous Flashback s, the Youngstown Wine & Jazz featuring keyboardist Alex Bugnon on Saturday, and on Sunday the 2DE Gospel Fest. In addition, the All AmeriCon 2017 Comic Convention is Saturday and Sunday at the Covelli Center. Tha n ks goes out to our great Summer Festival of the Arts team in the College of Creative Arts and Communication, who work hard every year to preserve this event as an anchor for one of the greatest weekends of t he summer. We also thank the city of Youngstown, the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Eric Ryan Productions for continuing to support the Summer Festival Weekend of Events. It is yet another example of how, through collaboration, we can do great things at the university, in the city and across the region. Alumni Society offers First Ladies Day Out Special to The Vindicator The YSU Alumni Society invites Youngstown State Universit y alumnae and their friends to the first Ladies Day Out! Timed to coincide with the Summer Festival of the Arts, it’s scheduled for Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Williamson College of Business Administration’s atrium. Make It a Weekend of Fun! Other Events During the Summer Festival of the Arts Weekend Special to The Vindicator Some of the best entertainment, et hnic, cultura l a nd arts events in the Valley will occur this upcoming weekend in addition to the YSU Summer Festiva l of t he A rts as the City of Youngstown, Mahoning Count y Convention & Visitors Bureau, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Eric Ryan Productions and Youngstown State University work together to produce a weekend of events. St. Nicholas Greek Summerfest kicks off the weekend July 6-9 which includes live music and dancing, Greek food and pastries, and a display of cultural memorabilia. Hours are: Thursday, July 6, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, July 7 and 8, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, July 9, Noon to 6 p.m. Take out lunch service is available on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
A concert on Friday, July 7, will bring the Fabulous Flashbacks together for the first time in eight years where they will perform on stage near the Central Square in Downtown Youngstown. The Flashbacks rose to fame as a classic rock a nd rol l ba nd, per for m ing during the 80s and 90s in and around Youngstow n. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. while the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Covelli Centre Box Office, at www.ticketmaster. com or at the gate. The convention will include over 100 vendors, and guests Bob Layton, Geof Isherwood, Michael Golden, Rags Morales and Darryl Banks. Admission is $10 per day. You say Pierogi and We Say How Many! Festival of Nations is Window on the World Special to The Vindicator We live in a culturally and ethnically rich communit y where it is still very common for families to engage in long standing traditions like planting a garden, canning vegetables, participating in various customs for milestones such as baptisms, birthdays, First Communions, holidays and weddings. We may not like to admit it, but we have all been disappointed at out-oftown weddings that didn’t include a cook ie table ! W ho among us can forget those potent and treasured childhood memories, especially revived with our own children or grandchildren?
The Festival of Nations at the Summer Festival of the Arts offers wonderful evidence of those traditions and of the memories most of us have, whether we are Polish, Italian, Latino, Greek, Asian or any one of the many “peoples of the Mahoning Valley!” Because we don’t just have pierogis, don’t miss the mouthwatering Greek, Polish and Carpatho-Rusyn food as well as specialties from Cultivate: a co-op café, Café India, Just Pizzelles, Handel’s Ice Cream and Mr. King’s Nuts. Check out the displays from the Ukraine and from Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian church. There will also be ethnic performances and traditions galore.
The Children’s Hands On Art Tent offers children the chance to make a free art project or two!

Seeing Stars at the Ward Beecher Planetarium Special to The Vindictor Join the staff of the Ward Beecher Planetarium for a full schedule of shows during the Summer Festival of the Arts. Interested in the stars and planets? What about the upcoming Great American Total Solar Eclipse occurring on August 21? Learn all about this and more at the Planetarium. The show schedule is for both days. 12 p.m. STARS Every star has a story. Some are as old as time, faint and almost forgotten. Others live short lives and end in powerful explosions. New stars are created every day, born of vast clouds of gas and dust. Through every phase of their existence, stars release the energy that powers the universe. This full dome program features the voice talent of Mark Hamill (known for his notable role in Star Wars as Luke Skywalker) and stunning immersive animation. 1 p.m. Legends of the Night Sky: Orion Accompanied by narrators Aesop the owl and Socrates the mouse, we follow Orion’s adventures as he grows to manhood, battles mythical beasts, foils the plot of an evil king and wins the heart of Artemis, the beautiful moon-goddess. By the end of the story, we learn how the constellation Orion was placed in the sky, forever turning overhead throughout the seasons 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Totality “Totality” is a fascinating look at all the wonders of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses. An eclipse is described simply as when one celestial object blocks another from our view. This program, produced by Bays Mountain Planetarium, examines what eclipses are, how and when they occur, and what wonderful sights they create. We also look back to a fascinating period in scientific discovery when general relativity was proven with the photographic recording of a total solar eclipse. 3 p.m. Summer Skywatch The night sky changes with the seasons, and so does our Skywatch program. This LIVE traditional star talk shows the current SUMMER night sky, constellation lore, and current astronomical events.
