Windsor House is ready to serve the residents of Canfield and the surrounding community SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Windsor House, Inc., owner and operator of twelve nursing homes, five assisted living communities and a home health company, has been planning (for over four years) to make Windsor House at Canfield a reality. “Windsor House is excited to celebrate the grand opening of their newest skilled nursing community” noted John Masternick, President and CEO of Windsor House, Inc. “Windsor House is extremely thankful to Canfield City Council and Canfield Township Board of Trustees for making this project come to fruition”, Masternick said. Located off Rts. 446 & 62, Windsor House at Canfield consists of 72 private rooms providing skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation. Divided into three lodges, all residents have access to many community rooms including the library, chapel, beauty and barber shop, two beautifully landscaped enclosed courtyards and a café. Windsor House at Canfield also has a private dining room that can be used to celebrate a
birthday, anniversary or holiday. The state of the art therapy gym features stationary bikes, treadmills and a 2017 Chevy Cruze. The Cruze will be used to practice the transition in and out of the car before returning home. Winsor House at Canfield’s therapy team can provide therapy services for fractures, joint replacements, cardiac rehabilitation or prosthetics/orthotics, among others. The rehabilitation therapists work together with the medical director and nursing staff to enhance the quality of the resident’s life by reshaping lost abilities and teaching new skills. Rehabilitation provides each resident with the tools needed to function at their maximum potential in the least restrictive environment. “The nursing home industry used to be known as the place you went to live out the rest of your life, but over the years, that has changed,” says Dan Rowland, Director of Marketing for Windsor House, Inc. “We’re sending more and more patients home to lead full lives.” Nursing homes today are more of a rehabilitation destination
and the middle point between hospi- noted Rowland. tals and home. “Our goal is to return Some of the many services provided at patients to their normal living environment as soon and as safely as possible,” See WINDSOR, Page F10

Chevy Cruze to be part of Windsor House at Canfield therapy program SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Often times, following an injury or illness, therapy is necessary to develop the strength to get back to doing the things we previously had taken for granted. Things like getting in and out of bed, climbing stairs, or driving a car. When you walk into the beautiful, state of the art, physical therapy gym at Windsor House at Canfield, you will notice a 2017 Chevy Cruze right there among all of the typical strength training and agil-
ity equipment. Jeena Anness, Regional Director for Premier Therapy, explained, “When they come in, we’re asking them what their goals are, and a lot of times, those patients that are coming to us are saying ‘We want to get behind the wheel again.’ Having an actual car in the therapy gym allows residents to practice the various movements necessary to help them achieve this goal. Jeena continued by saying, “We’re going to be practicing, not only getting
them behind the wheel and get driving again, but we are also going to be practicing getting them in and out of the passenger side, and back seat.” Sarah Kelty, a Physical Therapist with Windsor House, explained, “we work with the residents on things like putting their walker or bags of groceries in the trunk of the car. All are part of getting well and back on the road to
independence.” According to Dan Rowland, Marketing Director for Windsor House, safety measures are in place to prevent anyone who might be overly eager from hitting the highway just yet. The car did not come equipped with a gas tank! But, he said, “One can certainly ambulate in and out of the car, open and close the car doors and trunk.”

What is an STNA? A State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) is an essential part of the healthcare team. He or she is the hands-on care provider. This is the person who has the most daily contact with the resident. The STNA knows the resident better than any other member of the healthcare team.
Job duties of the STNA include providing assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, eating, toileting, dressing and mobility. The STNA provides valuable input to the decision makers on the healthcare team through his or her observation. In other words: the STNA is the backbone of the long-term care industry! Why a career as an STNA? Overall employment of State Tested Nursing Assistants is projected to grow 18 percent between now and 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is in response to the longterm care needs of an increasing elderly population. Financial pressures on hospitals to discharge patients as soon as possiSee STNA TRAINING, Page F14

ON YOUR NEWEST ADDITION TO THE
BEST OF LUCK!
SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Windsor House, Inc., owner and operator of twelve nursing homes and five assisted living communities in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania is embarking on their 60th anniversary. Founding the company in 1959, John and Dorothy Masternick had a clear mission in mind to provide the best possible quality of life in long term care.
In 1964, Mr. John Masternick, a prominent attorney and Judge in the Mahoning Valley and his wife Dorothy, a Registered Nurse, went on a Cursillo, which is a Catholic retreat for adults. Following the retreat, the Masternick’s realized that they needed to do more for the poor, frail and elderly of the community. So, from that point forward, Mr. Masternick and his business See TRADITION, Page F9

partner, Ed Miller, went out and bought five nursing homes. At that time, nursing homes were large mansions. After Mr. Miller’s passing in 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Masternick felt that the elderly needed more than broken down, old converted homes to live in. With their favorite Bible verse, always in the back of their mind, (“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least of my little ones, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40), they started building brand new nursing homes. The Masternick family has built more than 20 nursing homes in the Mahoning Valley, and most of Windsor House’s competitors followed suit and built new nursing homes. As a result, the Mahoning valley has some of the most beautiful nursing homes and assisted living communities that you could ever be in. Sadly, Mr. Masternick passed away in May 2009, while Mrs. Masternick will soon be celebrating her 92 birthday. Today, John J. Masternick (son of Mr. & Mrs. Masternick) serves as the company’s President and CEO. From what Mr. Masternick referred
WINDSOR HOUSE to as “humble beginnings” when the elderly was once “warehoused” in converted old homes, Windsor House, Inc. has grown into a progressive company that boasts some of the finest and newest modern facilities in the area. The earliest Windsor House homes included an old hotel at Lake Milton and several old mansion-type homes, which according to Mr. Masternick were full of “makeshift additions,” making them scary and even dangerous at times. Such is not the case today. The company’s skilled nursing and assisted living communities showcase Windsor House, Inc., as a company that has relied on solid old-fashioned values while staying abreast of contemporary trends in an ever-changing industry. Another trend over the years has been the increase in short term residents. Nu rsi ng homes today a re becoming more of a rehabilitation destination and the middle point between hospitals and home. In order to meet these demands, Windsor House has established short term therapy units in many of their nursing homes including a 24-patient short term rehabilitation unit in Windsor House at Canfield. Over the past five decades, Windsor House has cared for more than 40,000 residents and employed over 20,000

What started as a goal of Canfield City and Canfield Township working together to create a mutually beneficial Joint Economic Development District (JEDD) in early 2015 has become an astounding success in the construction of Windsor House, a 72 bed Skilled Nursing Community. While Windsor House is still under construction, benefits are already being felt by both the City and the Township. “The biggest result is the amazing facility that is currently in our community, where previously an underutilized property existed and will provide skilled nursing and short term rehabilitation for our residents and those in neighboring areas so they can remain close to family and friends, which can be so beneficial for recovery and quality of life,” said Marie Izzo-Cartwright, a trustee for Canfield Township. “The greatest results will happen once the facility is open and operating and 72 full-time jobs are created, which will hopefully provide employment for some of our local residents and the projected estimated real estate taxes being $253,063 where previously for the underdeveloped land it was $5,706.” Don Dragish, Canfield City Council President and candidate for mayor, agreed that the JEDD will offer many benefits to city residents, some that can be seen even at this early stage. “We have seen community involvement, beautiful facility and job opening,” he said. “It will be some time before we really see the true benefits on our community. Seeing that Windsor House offers several community activities at other facilities, I’m quite sure those programs will become a part of our community in the near future.” The local schools will also see a ben-
efit from the JEDD, something officials from both the Township and City realized while going through the JEDD process, according to Izzo-Cartwright. “Going through the JEDD process, officials from both the Township and the City realized that this project would benefit the school systems the most, since the projected tax revenues would go from $3,712 to $164,628 annually and would be collectible due to the fact that this was new construction,” she said. The formation of the JEDD has also helped to open and maintain cooperation between the City and the Township. “It has opened conversations with Canfield Township and future potential projects, and has brought much needed income to back to our community,” said Dragish. “In this situation it works for both sides City and Township. Money comes back to our Fire, Schools and Community.” Izzo-Cartwright noted that the Township and the City had to work together throughout many meetings to come to an agreement on the JEDD that would be acceptable to both. She said they utilized cooperation and negotiation to create a responsible, but friendly working relationship that continues as both try to get the best results possible for their residents. Looking to the future, both Dragish and Izzo-Cartwright agree that working on this JEDD has opened talks for future projects in which the City and the Township will collaborate. “Even though we have our City and Township differences, we are able to communicate to each other and find the best solution for Canfield,” said Dragish. “As long as we all have our residents first we can have discussions and make our community even stronger. Good communication is the key to the future.”

Windsor House is now providing private duty care SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR As a caregiver, when reviewing the long-term and short-term home care needs of a loved one, it’s important to understand the difference between private duty care and home health care. They are very different and involve varying levels of patient support. Private duty care (or custodial care) offers a broad range of long-term services to assist senior adults with their daily lives, from non-invasive medical and nursing care, to bill paying and transportation services, to meal preparation and companionship. The goal of a private duty caregiver is to provide whatever support a senior adult needs to remain independent as long as possible in their own home. On the other hand, home health care (or supportive health care) is medically driven and helps adults and seniors who are recovering after a hospital or facility stay, or need additional support to remain safely at home and avoid unnecessary hospitalization. These Medicarecertified services may include short-term nursing, rehabilitative, therapeutic, and assistive home health care. This care is provided by registered nurses, physi-
cal therapists, occupational therapists, home health aides and medical social workers. CareBuilders at Home Mahoning Valley, a private duty company, was created out of a strong desire to serve the needs of our community. We have a team that is dedicated to providing quality care that allows loved ones to maintain independence in the comfort of their home. CareBuilders at Home Mahoning Valley is locally owned and partnered with Windsor House, Inc. Before beginning professional caretaking services, a CareBuilders at Home Mahoning Valley representative will discuss with you the appropriate level and frequency of care you or a loved one requires. All of our caregivers, regardless of the level of care being provided, perform light daily-living services, such as the preparing meals, keeping living areas tidy, and laundry. We offer a wide-range of home care services to meet your every need, from personal care to homemaking assistance. It’s time to take your independence back.
