Annie Shows Us Christmas The Vintage Way Whatever you do this Christmas, make it a good one. I will be enjoying a traditional turkey dinner with home grown vegetables, served on a vintage dining set, whilst sipping on a Gin Fizz and listening to some old school Christmas tunes! To be followed later by a cocktail (or two), 1980s charades and a jolly old game of Twister! Here are some more ideas for you... Follow me on Twitter - @AnnieAtticVtg With this seasons festivities looming we look at some fun and creative ways to put some vintage sparkle into your Christmas. If you’re anything like me, you’ve left all your Christmas shopping till the last possible minute and are now in a flutter over what to buy your nearest and dearest. Bored with the usual department store offerings? Thinking alternative this year? Well, fear not – with thrifty and unique retro items the possibilities are endless. Forget the chaotic high streets and take a wander down vintage lane. Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect gift for your better half, kids, parents or friends, if you lend yourself to some creative thinking a vintage goodie will not only offer a really personal choice, but should save you a pretty penny or two!

06

Ok – I’m not suggesting that today’s children will be content with an old woollen stocking stuffed with walnuts and tangerines but in these days of Blu-ray and X-

Box, retro kids toys and activities might offer real novelty value (think Spacehoppers, Potter Wheels and Sweet Factories.) What about a vintage board game for Dad? A nostalgic trip is always a sure fire way to get into the good books (be prepared for some ‘when I was young’ tales though!) There is a great range available at vintagetoybox.co.uk and vintage-games. co.uk where you will find everything from original Battleships to Subbuteo, plus a selection of other vintage and antique toys, dolls and bears. Mums will adore vintage china, jewellery, perfume bottles and retro kitchenalia items. If you are buying for someone you know like the back of your hand then, of course, vintage clothing or accessories are a winner. Remember that vintage sizing bears no relevance to todays though, so go on measurements and not sizes printed in labels. A good quality vintage bag (I can highly recommend JoaniesJunk.co.uk)

is bound to get a good reaction as everyone loves a good handbag. You can find everything from clothing to bags and hats at vintage shops and local fairs.Adorn your humble abode in vintage decorations and lights but remember to get old wiring checked out/ replaced before using. These may require some sourcing but vintage tree decorations and baubles are very popular on eBay at the moment... Grab

yourself a vintage cookbook and bake up a few nostalgic treats for family and friends.

If at this point your thinking ‘woahhh vintage overload’ then pick and choose the elements to suit you, and, if you’re apprehensive about buying vintage gifts for people start smaller and make some old school style pretty paper crackers with vintage cufflinks / necklaces, hankies. Now to create a little definition, apply a highlighter to the cheekbones & the brow bone (the bit underneath your eyebrow). We love MAC’s Crème Colour in “Pearl”. This isn’t typical of a 1950’s look but it just makes the overall finish just that little bit more special! Top with a dusting of MAC’s iridescent pressed powder in “Belightful” to create a sparkling shimmer across the cheekbones. Sweep a iridescent nude eyeshadow across the eyelid (We have used MAC’s “Blanc Type”) and define the socket-line with a darker shade of eyeshadow (Try MAC’s “Omega”).

TION C U D O R AN INT “The Beauty Queens” are a professional make-up events team, providing make-up application, nail art and hairstyling services at events, parties, festivals, vintage fairs and much, much more! Formed by Gina Dowle and Laura Hunt, who are two freelance make-up and hair artists thriving in the industry. Between them, they have worked on a variety of projects throughout film, tv, commercials, fashion, beauty shoots, bridal and music videos. “ We want to bring our expert advice and knowledge to clients, providing a service where they can have make-up applied and hairstyles created. We work with models, actors, actresses, bands and singers on a daily basis and want to bring to you what we bring to them - a chance to be pampered and to feel like a queen! (or king!)”

The Beauty Queens Wish You A Merry Christmas With This 50’s Party Look Well, its Christmas time and that means that the party invites will be flooding in! Worried how to make your look extra special for the festive season? Here we show you how to create a 1950’s look with a sprinkling Beauty Queens’ Christmas sparkle! Ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed and moisturised with products correctly suited for your skin type. Take extra care with your skin this time of year, as the cold weather can be harsh to it. It is also very important to remember your skin can become very dehydrated from all the party excesses, so remember to drink lots of water! This is one of our key beauty tips and it doesn’t cost a penny! However, if you have forgotten to top up on the H20, Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster is a fantastic way to make your skin feeling soft & fresh. Apply underneath your moisturiser.

08

Once your skin is all prepped and feeling lovely, apply the appropriate foundation for your skin tone. Conceal any blemishes and remember to cover any dark circles under the eyes. This is another give-away area of over-indulging! Dark circles can be caused by too many late nights & toxins (i.e. naughty food & drink!!) so make sure use a good concealer - Bobbi Brown’s are particularly good. Dust with powder.

Now to create those statement 50’s flicks! A lot of girls ask us the best way to create eye-flicks and we strongly recommend a gel liner. The advantage of this type of liner is that they are really easy to apply and they give you the luxury of being work the product on, without setting too fast. However, when they do set, they don’t budge - which is exactly what you want, especially if you’re going to be dancing all night! The best way to apply liner is with a slantedtip brush and a steady hand! Practice is everything with eye-flicks – we get asked a lot how is the best way to do them & the most important thing is just to take your time. Now, we’ve got something special planned for these Christmas flicks so we’ll return to these in a minute…. To add a little bit of festive glamour, take inspiration from the 50’s Hollywood starlets and get some false lashes! Our favourites our Eylure (available in Boots, Superdrug & many other stores), who have a huge selection! They are the original eyelashes that were worn by many, many film stars. Apply a small amount of glue along the spine, allow to become slightly tacky and then apply above the lashes. Then apply a coat of mascara to join the falsies up with your own lashes. Now back to those eye-flicks…to make them a little more glamorous than your normal look, take some black diamantes (available in many craft stores) and with tweezers, carefully apply along the line you have already created. This will really make you eyes sparkle! Nothing says glamorous like red lips! So take your favourite red lipstick – we have used MAC’s “Lady Danger” and apply to the lips. We added a little gloss on top to balance the lips with the sparkly eyes. To complete the look, add a sweep of blush to your cheeks. Always do your blush at the end, as it prevents you from going overboard with it! So there you have it, Beauty Queens’ twist on a 1950’s make-up look! Give it a try, we hope it gets you plenty of kisses under the mistletoe!

When Tatiana Ashakova launched her millinery and fascinator brand Beretk!Ah… the idea behind was to create a unique and unusual, unconventional – if you want – range for those stylish brides who wouldn’t want to go to a traditional bridal shop to buy their hair accessory. Knowing this type of a customer in person (Tatiana has worked as a bridal stylist for more than 5 years) she knew what they wanted and this is how her unique bridal head wear designs came to life. “I am not aiming at volumes, - says the milliner, - I am happier to create one-off piece and make this one person feel very special!” This approach won Tatiana many of her stylish

clients, who, needless to say, appreciate the craftsmanship and personal approach. The milliner draws inspiration from everywhere – her new British lifestyle and abundance of antique shops where one finds all these old things, photographs and cards, her Russian heritage and a totally different mentality, which also brings a great portion of uniqueness to her designs. “I love experimenting with styles and combining new and old. I am sure I was born in the wrong era…but I can’t complain really!” However there are popular designs which win Beretk!Ah… customers’ hearts – for example a mini flower bird cage has had many modification and has been adopted to a cocktail hat etc. “It just takes one-two designs to make the brand recognizable and it is crucial to create it in the early stage”, Tatiana shares her strategic approach.

All in all to make each bride the most happy on her most special day is the ultimate goal for Beretk!Ah… and step by step Tatiana makes it happen – recently by opening an on-line shop at www.beretkah.co.uk.

INTRODUCES YOU TO ROBIN & ROSE My background is Fashion Design and I work full time for a UK ladieswear brand but I have always wanted to run my own company. My parent’s have a farm in rural Ireland and my Mother has handknit countless cardigans, sweaters & accessories for family and commercially so hence the independent streak! The Robin & Rose online shop was launched in 2009 initially with stock from UK based brands such as Rosehip and Gwendolen, along with some European and Australian brands. I sourced affordable gift items with a feminine modern edge but wanted to add my own products to add a point of difference. I have always enjoyed making things so when I found out about The Make Lounge in Islington, I quickly

12

signed up for an evening class on how to make vintage soy teacup candles. I enjoyed it so much that I tweaked the idea & gave it my own twist and in June 2010 packed my bag and headed to The Vintage Tea Party & Gift Fair in Highgate with a small range of handmade eco soy candle jars, the reaction was really positive and it gave me the confidence to grow the range of fragrances on offer. Alongside the candle range, I also make handmade sugar body scrubs and plan to introduce bath salts and lip balms in the New Year. Again these ideas stemmed from a lovely Bath & Body evening class at The Make Lounge. I think many people are growing tired of the High Street, money is tight and customers

are looking for something special when they do spend, it is a great opportunity for small independent designers and local markets to grow and there is no better time to support innovative local designers & retailers.

As a rule, I do not believe in fate, I am far too sceptical for anything like that, but I suppose it could be argued that I was meant to stumble across the Vintage Emporium whilst I was lost in Brick Lane. Fellow cynics will agree that it was probably due to

probability that I found this wonderful place. However, it was filled with such a magic that even I was tempted to believe that my finding it was down to some otherworldly influence. My friend and I were very eager to escape down the stairs into the Emporium. What a place! Full to the brim with beautiful items from the 1920’s to the 1940’s, stepping into that room felt like stepping back in time (please excuse the cliché). As soon as I entered, I knew that I had to include it in an article. At first I did not know how I was going to link it to Christmas, but then I took a look around me and realised that I had been missing the obvious. I was surrounded by luxurious furs and richly coloured dresses, all of which

After the feelings of “Panic! I haven’t started Christmas shopping” had subsided, for it is custom in our family to begin buying gifts in late August… don’t ask me why, I started to think about how I could add a touch of vintage into this year’s celebrations. Of course, my mind jumped straight to the obvious: clothes. So, I set off to find the perfect vintage inspired Christmas outfit.

I had heard about this place in the November issue of the Vintage Rag Mag, so I thought that it could do me no harm to have a little look around. Here, I found a wonderful, very Christmassy dress. THE VINTAGE RAG MAG TAKE THEIR VINTAGE HUNT TO NEW YORK This November The Vintage Rag Mag visited New York in search of all things Vintage. Staying in Soho we had such an amazing time we are already planning a trip back in the New Year but we thought we would share our favourite shops and our favourite buys with you. The shops we are focusing on are all located on 1st Avenue - Yes all these amazing shops were in walking distance of each other!

Cobblestones Cobblestones has to be for me the ultimate vintage shop found on my search down 1st Avenue. The front window drew me in and once I was in I was hocked. The amount of clothing, shoes, handbags and hats packed in this amazing shop could be overwhelming for some but I love searching for items and this was the perfect setting to do it in. Located at 314 9th Street between 1st & 2nd Avenue, the shop has been running in this same spot for 31 years!

Archangel Antiques This fantastic little antique shop was packed full of vintage clothing along with an array of unusual antiques. The amount of goodies packed into this small shop was almost overwhelming with small items such as beads and buttons right up to vintage luggage, prints and clothing. Located at 334 9th Street between 1st & 2nd Avenue.
