Annie Shows You How To Sparkle This Season In Vintage Eveningwear... Well it’s that time of year again folks where we reluctantly swap our colourful skirts and jackets for sombre coats and trousers but let’s look on the bright side. Personally, I adore winter dressing. It allows for layering, educes texture, detail and most of all, the staple: black tights come out to play! As the nights grow longer and darker, evening wear recaptures us with all its romance. Glistening diamante, sequin’s and rich fabrics catch the twinkling fairy and tea lights that begin to decorate our homes and gatherings at this time of year.
06
This is the season to dazzle and outshine all others and vintage really can provide that something special. You’re also guaranteed not to show up at the office party wearing the same outfit as anybody else! This season’s trends for thirties and forties provide perfect examples of bygone glitz and glamour. If you are lucky enough to get your mitts on some original items then ‘tis the season to be sporting them! Look towards the fifties
and early sixties for lady-like elegance. Simple cut dresses and classic designs off-set with tasteful jewellery and accessories will not only look good this winter but provide staple items for your wardrobe come rain or shine. Fur wraps, silk scarves and elbow length evening gloves are a firm favourite with fifties fans. Alternatively, sparkle brighter than the tree fairy in 60s/70s Lurex minis and maxis. Team long sleeved mod dresses with thick white tights, boots or flats for the day and simply exchange for a pair of dark tights and heels in the evening. The eighties are a good source of inspiration for some full on glamour – think Dallas! Fabrics such as velvet or velour offer a low cost luxury look and designs from this period were great fun with puffball and ruffling features ever popular. Remember, the 80s also nodded towards the 40s, with tight fitting and peplum dresses favouring an hourglass silhouette, so if your
budget won’t stretch to original forties sourcing, these later versions may offer a cheaper solution. The beauty of eveningwear is in the detail, whether it is printed or textured fabric and deep, jewel colours (ruby, emerald, topaz) reflect the time of year. Add some sparkle to your outfit with vintage accessories such as original brooches and beaded bags. Keep a sharp fashion eye out for festive trends such as fitted suits in heavy fabrics, tweeds, cords and jodhpurs. Chunky knits and mohair jumpers will also reign supreme this season and are hot items at all the good Vintage Fairs.

Just team your outfit of choice with some killer vintage heels, apply deep red or fuscia lipstick, liquid eyeliner, lashings of mascara and pin side-parted hair into a slick ponytail, bun or pin-curl for that perfect Veronica Lake look. Give ‘em the old Razzle Dazzle … Annie xx

The Beauty Queens Prepare The Polka Dot Dolls For Their Performance At “Salute To The 40’s”
The Beauty Queens have been as busy as always at many events and this month had the pleasure of preparing The Polka Dot Dolls for their performance at “Salute to the Forties”. The Polka Dot Dolls are a vintage singing trio who capture the romance and emotion of the war era with delightfully rich harmonies. This wonderful event was held at The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, which was transformed into a 1940’s dream! The Captain’s office of HMS Endurance was titivated into the dressing room, where The Beauty Queens worked their magic. Perfecting the girls 1940’s look with Victory Rolls & curls and not forgetting the Dolls’ trademark red roses in their hair. Keeping their look true to the era, The Beauty Queens ensured the Dolls skin was kept matt with soft blush on the cheeks. The brows were emphasised as a strong brow is key to 40’s look. With the eyes, light shading was applied in the sockets & glamorous eyeflicks. The Beauty Queens ensured the Dolls had the perfect lips with rich reds all round. To complete the look, each Doll was given a beauty spot. On a rainy day, miraculously the sun came out as The Polka Dot Dolls stepped onto the stage! Scarlet, Dixie and Tallulah treated the crowds to many popular 1940’s songs such as Dame Vera Lynn’s ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, Glen Millers’‘In the Mood’ and The Andrew Sisters’‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B’. The crowds certainly enjoyed the Dolls’ performance! The Polka Dot Dolls have been busy acquiring an impressive CV performing recently for Vintage by Hemingway at London Fashion Weekend. They have also met Dame Vera Lynn and the Prime Minister at Number 10 Downing Street when they performed there on behalf of The Royal British Legion. Their most impressive performance to date has been for the 65th VE Day Anniversary at the Horse Guard’s Parade which was attended by HRH The Prince of Wales. INTRODUCES YOU TO COLLECTIF CLOTHING Collectif Clothing is an independent UK retailer bringing the best in Forties and Fifties Vintage reproduction and alternative style clothing, for women of all shapes and sizes.
Established in 2001, Collectif is one Europe’s leaders and originators in Vintage Reproductions. Starting off as a small shop in Camden Market, Collectif originally focused on Punk and Psychobilly styles. However, with the addition of new designers and the increased popularity of the Rockabilly revival scene, Collectif expanded focusing their attention on the classic looks of 1940s and 50s, and 60s with the opportunity to reproduce Vintage fashions for the modern woman.

The inspiration for Collectif’s designs today stem from the team’s love of Vintage. Katherine Tuck of Collectif’s design team says: “My main inspiration is my Grandmother who looked after me a lot as a child. I grew-up listening to her tales of the war, the wonders of the Make Do and Mend movement and how the girls would improvise and experiment to keep themselves looking feminine. When designing I take inspiration from my Grandmothers stories, my love of Lowbrow art, black and white photography from Hollywood’s ‘Golden
Age’, people I see on the street that make an effort to look amazing every day, and browsing in vintage shops. A vast amount of research goes into our collections, to offer something different whilst also staying faithful to history. At Collectif we offer a combination of retro styles with modern materials and sizing, so you can always find a good fit, and wear a dress every day or night without worrying that you’re wearing out a piece of history”

INTRODUCES YOU TO ST JUDE CUPCAKES St Jude Cupcakes is a family run bakery based in Northwood, Middlesex. The roots of our business lie in the vintage world as our first job as St Jude Cupcakes was a last minute call to run a cake stand at a local vintage fair. The fair was a fantastic experience for us, there was a live swing band, the sun was shining and everybody came out in their best vintage frocks. Our cakes were so well received that we had to bake another batch midday! For a long time we had been looking for a van to bring our cakes to our customers in a unique and fun way. After our experience at the fair and the feel good vibe the vintage eras evoke we decided that we wanted a vintage vehicle with lots of character.
12
After a long search we found the soon to be called Daisy in the seaside town of Portsmouth. Daisy is a beautiful 1973 Bedford CF ice cream van which we transformed into a cupcake van with a fifties style theme. We wanted to give Daisy a distinct retro feel so we have kept
as many of her wonderful original features as possible. We have also highlighted these features with her pastel exterior which is adorned with daisies (hence the name!) ,her vintage style floral bunting and her long fluttery lashes. Daisy is available to hire for weddings, birthday parties, fetes and fairs. The St Jude Cupcake team will bring Daisy to your event and serve your guests treats from this unique cupcake van. The team always like to dress to match Daisy’s retro style and can be found in cupcake petticoat skirts and matching cardigans. Daisy serves the classic range of St Jude Cupcakes as well as seasonal specials. Our bestselling cupcake is the ‘99’ flake cupcake, a nod to Daisy’s ice cream van past. Daisy also serves vintage style ice cream such as Banana Boats and Knickerbocker Glories, retro lollies, nostalgic penny sweets and chocolate goodies. St Jude Cupcakes is a company that like to be quirky and have fun
with our branding and marketing. At the heart of our business however, is a passion for baking delicious cakes using the best quality ingredients available. Our company motto is that we would never serve our customers anything that we would not be happy for our beautiful 18 month old son/grandson Jude (the Dude) to eat. Find St Jude Cupcakes on facebook. As a complete and utter vintage addict, I have no idea how I have managed to survive so far without watching the classic film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Whilst the storyline was not exactly what I had expected, I could not fail to be inspired by Holly Golightly’s sophistication, glamour and elegance. How can a simple black dress look so incredible? Oh yes, and how could I forget? The hat, the hat, the hat. Chic and stylish, I often feel that the perfect hat can finish off every vintage look, and whilst my bedroom often resembles a milliner’s dream, I have
Also this month, I have discovered the 1950’s style rolled fringe. I say discovered, but what I really mean is that I was pinned down by my mother (a vintage hair stylist for Pincurls & Pout) and told that I was about to be given a new ‘do. Upon being informed that I was getting “the rolled fringe”, I could not help but think that this would be rather difficult to find the perfect outfit for. However, then I remembered this dress that I found in the cupboard last week. With unknown origins and a forgotten past, I felt that I had to give it a new lease of life.

INTRODUCES YOU TO CHERRY LAUNDRY The Cleanest T-Shirts In the World Wouldn’t it be cool if you could buy your clothes from a laundrette? This was the thought that popped into my head on my Asian travels whilst sketching some designs and waiting for my washing. Cherry Laundry T-shirts are based on 1950’s laundry nostalgia, but with a Scottish twist. I’ve always thought that launderettes are visually fantastic places that ooze coolness. Although, to an extent, they have been glamorised by Hollywood, I still love the idea of people connecting with one another while waiting for their clothes to be washed. Using classic laundrettes as my theme for the brand has opened a huge number of exciting new design possibilities. There are endless variations you can create with irons, washing machines and mangles etc, and adding a distressed
finish to the designs gives them a real 1950’s vintage feel. The Scottish twist comes from my fondness for the area I grew up in, back home in Perthshire. What better way to grab people’s attention to my market stall than by wearing my kilt? It creates many opportunities for market goers to ask me questions and lets people know that I’m representing a proud British brand. 07814178191 www.cherrylaundry.co.uk sales@cherrylaundry.co.uk Facebook – The Cherry Laundry

Norwich is fast becoming one of the most vintage-obsessed cities in the UK; you cannot turn a corner without a vintage clothes shop, vintage fair, vintage tearoom or indeed vintage looking person. So it is no surprise that the vintage day of Norwich Fashion Week, yes – who knew?! – was jammed to the rafters of its historical setting, the town’s original library, now the Library Restaurant. The day was organised by the venue and two of Norwich’s top vintage enthusiasts and event planners A Most Curious Party and Blue Skies Events. The former specialising in antique crockery and retro prop hire, the latter a long time vintage fashion veteran and stylist. So between them created a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme where guests could enjoy beautiful food, alongside beautiful fashion, with catwalk shows featuring authentic vintage pieces from the 1920s to the 70s, showcasing the best of
Antidote, Vintage Deli and Dusty Loves Vintage. A Most Curious Party also organise the biggest vintage wedding fair in the UK, hosted in Norwich, so with Karen of Blue Skies, made sure there was something for blushing vintage-loving brides-to-be with a dedicated bridal show from couture designer Jane Kenning who takes her inspiration from Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jean Harlow and Marylyn Monroe. Perfect. And what would a bridal show be without the lingerie, the models strutted through the crowd in LaLa Loula naughties, made from vintage fabric and lace, as well as Indiscrete boudoir style underwear finished with Kitty Minx beautiful feathered and pearl head pieces and bouquets from Love Blooms. The shows also proved what creative and vintage loving people Norwich has to offer such as world class period hair stylist Flamingo Amy who created oversized victory rolls or fun 60s beehives for the girls as well as
vintage make up expert Milk and Honey, who all worked with the college’s fashion and beauty students to put together the looks on the day. In case that wasn’t enough, the vintage event duo also hand picked stalls for a pop-up vintage fair, that included home wares, floristry, jewellery, clothing, cupcakes millinery and other accessories for the fashion lovers to browse when not having tea or cake or watching the shows. Move over Alan Partridge, Norwich is now being put on the map for its thriving vintage scene. www.blueskiesvintage events.co.uk www.amostcuriousparty.co.uk Photography - Antonella Muscat

VISITED...
The Authentic Vintage Fair
Vintage outside the big smoke Ask anyone, there isn’t much to do in Epsom, Surrey. As Fashion students and Bloggers living here, we’ve often struggled to find a way to spend our Saturdays without heading into London, especially when we want to do some essential vintage shopping.
24
So, when we heard about Antique vs Vintage we were really excited – an affordable monthly fair, just round the corner from where we live. Run by two lovely young locals, Natasha and Jonathan, they took the brave step of setting up not in the East of London as you might think (and many others have done) but in the suburbs of Surrey. Giving students from UCA and other interested Surrey fashionistas and lovers-of-old-things a chance to buy, and sell selected second-hand wares, Antiques vs Vintage is a great platform into these often intimidating worlds.
Tegan Christmas, used the fair as an opportunity to leave the mundaneness of her previous job, and set up a stall in the downstairs vintage hall; “I had this ridiculous office job which I hated, and I had three goals in life: to dye my hair red, own a dog and work for myself. I had a moment of clarity one day and walked out... I started this the next day. That was two years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.” Local girl Lucy Hayward also holds a stall - a hairdressing stand specializing in retro styles. For just £5 (less than the price of one cocktail) I had my hair expertly curled and pinned into perfect 1940s victory rolls; a style I had been attempting for months! Normally working from home, Antiques vs Vintage provides her with an affordable, local way to meet new clients and to

expand her business. Looking around the busy hall, it’s clear everyone here is enjoying themselves, and we can see why. Easy parking and only £1 entry for NUS card holders mean we feel even less guilty about our beautiful (and reasonably priced) purchases inside. Retro home-ware, stunning jewellery, antique books and renovated shabby-chic furniture, the antiques upstairs was just as welcoming and interesting as the vintage downstairs, but it was the combination of the two which we think really makes this fair stand out as the perfect way to spend our Saturday. And best of all, the money we saved on travel went straight into buying vintage. Perfect! Daisy & Olivia Tinker www.thingsyoushould worship.blogspot.com
The historic Guild Hall in Royal Windsor was the venue for the BVintage Bazaar Authentic vintage fair on the first Saturday of October, a day so hot and sunny that stallholders at the popular fair came expecting to sell fur coats and stoles and ended up selling floral Horrockses Summer dresses and 50s bathing suits instead! The unseasonal sweltering weather aside, visitors and shoppers at the fair were delighted to see the vast displays and rails full of 1950s embellished evening gowns, 70’s gypsy style floating maxi dresses, trinkets and jewellery from Art Deco to Biba, and a host of beautiful reworked vintage furniture from heavy antique bureau’s to Ercol and Eames chairs. As always with The BVintage Bazaar Authentic fairs, the quality and range of fashion, accessories and home wear on offer was high class grade A perfection! The BVintage ladies,
BVintage Baza Windsor ar
Sadie Boon and Berni Bailes who have been running the fairs for the last two years put their success down to three main factors, their strict “Authentic Vintage ONLY” rule, their beautiful and accessible venues and finally the close working relationships with their stallholders. A recipe which works for both sellers and buyers alike. With bags full of vintage delights, the crowds streamed back out onto the steamy Windsor streets beaming from ear to ear with their unique purchases. And with many whispers about the vintage craze slowing down, surely no one at the Windsor Vintage Fair would have agreed with so many leaving laden with beautiful and nostalgic goodies to treasure. If you want to join in with the BVintage Bazaar magic, you can visit them at the next Authentic Vintage Fair at Henley Town Hall on the 26th of November and at the fabulous Christmas Retro Festival on the 3rd and 3th of December at the White Waltham Airfields. www.bvintagebazaar.co.uk www.retrofestival.co.uk
