A SEVENTIES SUMMER This year seventies style fashion has hit the catwalks all over again with designers such as Marc Jacob using seventies inspired designs in his current spring / summer collections. Although this isn’t the only return of the seventies. Designers have been bringing seventies style back to the catwalks since 2005.

The seventies brought traditional crafts such as knitting, tapestry, weaving and dying to the centre of this decades fashion Floating florals, bold block colours, embroidery, fringing and maxi dresses are an essential starting block for a seventies summer wardrobe and accessories are just as crucial. These can

all be reworn decade upon decade with a restyled twist. Nothing says seventies more than a floppy felt hat or a pair of oversized seventies sunnies. You can always add a touch of colour to your outfit with a silk scarf. Accessories are also a fab way of adding vintage to a highstreet outfit to give it that individual twist it needs.

NOW FOR THE MAKE UP Ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed & moisturised with products correctly suited for your skin type. Before apply your foundation, prep the skin with MAC’s Strobe Cream. This works as a primer (evening out the skin) and also has a pearlescent quality to it that creates that true 70’s shimmer that they loved.

TION C U D O R AN INT

Apply a foundation suited to your skin tone all over and conceal any blemishes. Dust with powder.

“The Beauty Queens” are a professional make-up events team, providing make-up application, nail art and hairstyling services at events, parties, festivals, vintage fairs and much, much more! Formed by Gina Dowle and Laura Hunt, who are two freelance make-up and hair artists thriving in the industry. Between them, they have worked on a variety of projects throughout film, tv, commercials, fashion, beauty shoots, bridal and music videos. “ We want to bring our expert advice and knowledge to clients, providing a service where they can have make-up applied and hairstyles created. We work with models, actors, actresses, bands and singers on a daily basis and want to bring to you what we bring to them - a chance to be pampered and to feel like a queen! (or king!)”

HOW YOU CAN GET THIS BEAUTIFUL 70’S LOOK I am a huge fan of heated rollers and they are great for 70s waves. Babyliss do a great set which is what I use. Prep hair by combing through a strong-hold mousse. Then, starting in the centre front, start rollering the hair in sections away from the face in rows going down the back of your head. Because of the hairstyle we are creating, the rollers don’t need to be placed too neatly. Once the whole of your hair is in, go off and do your make-up whilst the rollers cool and set.

Apply a highlighter to the cheek bones and brow bone (the bit underneath your eyebrow) I have used MAC’s crème colour in “Luna” Work a light iridescent colour all over the eye. Gold was a really popular colour in the 70’s and anything with shimmer. You don’t have to follow our colours precisely, have a play with the colours you like! As long as they have a metallic / shimmer elements to them, it will work! There are plenty of great products on the market vary in price range - from Barry M’s dazzle dusts to MAC beautiful pigments. Have fun with it! I worked gold into the socket line and defined with a purple. Lastly bringing a green along the bottom lash line. Then apply a layer of mascara The 70’s brought the birth of the bronzer and they loved lots of it! Make sure you have one that suits your skin tone and work it along the cheekbone, right up to the hairline. This part of the make-up really signifies the 70’s look. I used MAC’s Mineralised Skinfinish in “Gold Deposit” Add a sweep of sparkly shimmer across the cheek bones - I used MAC’s iridescent pressed powder “Belightful” Lastly, they loved lipgloss in this era so pick a nice bright colour but remember to use one which has a metallic tone to it. I used “Frosted Melon” by Lancome

Once the rollers have cooled completely, take them out and brush through. We want waves and not curls so you can afford to brush the hair without being too gentle. Set the parting you would like and use your fingers to shape the waves around your face. Now spray wisps away from your face and set the style.

The Vintage Guide For The Vintage Bride By Annie It all began on a blustery evening last October on the infamous Brighton Pier, when my flustered, darling hubby to be stumbled to one trembling knee to pop the question. In utter (but ecstatic) shock, I muttered ‘yes’, well, how could a girl refuse catching sight of the early 80s diamond and sapphire vintage ring. I was suitably impressed as he usually spends most of his time complaining at the lack of space in our little suburban flat packed to the rafters with vintage clothing, shoes, kitchenalia and random vintage finds that I like to call ‘collectables’ whilst he prefers ‘old junk’! Vintage wedding dress hunting opens up a whole new hatbox. A dusty rummage in the family attic may unveil some aging gems and with the current trend for 60s and 70s wedding dresses, you may just strike lucky. Tracking down and deciding on THE dress is like a romantic love affair. One minute you’re in ecstasy, wrapped up in the magic of all that vintage lace, sweeping trains and pearls, the next gasping over the simplicity of the swinging 60s and contemplating exactly how short a hemline would be acceptable. Give yourself all the time you need or you

The 1900s-1920s is not a frequent choice for vintage brides, probably due to the fact that accompanying accessories are harder to source. The simplistic, romantic bias cuts in satins and silks of the 20s and 30s are growing ever popular.

Expect this trend to grow. The 70s nod towards this era is certainly more practical and easier to find as the original stuff is just so rare. Not to say you can’t get it, because you can, but be prepared for some serious delving in the sourcing department and expect to pay a premium. You may find the odd dress or item online. EBay is a good source for vintage as is www.AntiqueDress.com and try www.vintagedress. co.uk for a great selection of 1930s-60s dresses at the higher end of the price bracket. ‘Annie’s’ in Camden Passage stock a wonderful selection of flapper dresses. For stunning art deco headwear google ‘Yulia Kunze’. 1940s wedding dresses continued the trend with bias cuts and liquid fabrics, but expect extra touches of detail and embellishment such as collars, cuffs and peplums. This era is becoming an immense trend at the moment, so if this is your chosen period get in quick!

Recently endorsed by Lilly Allen and Kate Moss, both seen sporting the most spectacular of vintage dresses from this era.

By the 1950s, hemlines were rising and this opens your options of shorter styles of wedding dresses, usually knee-length, or just below. Expect a lot of lace and trimmings such as bows and buttons. A really pretty era and well suited for a

may end up like myself, the proud owner of an entire collection of vintage wedding dresses (one from each era). Whether you’re into turn of the century, 20s or 40s or are partial to 50s and beyond, the overall wedding theme must reflect the influences and general zeitgeist of your preferred era. I found a bit of good-old, trusty scrapbooking to be invaluable. Print out things you spot on the internet (you must check out www. rocknrollbride.com – a wonderful source of inspiration for vintage and quirky weddings) and tear pieces out of magazines and stick them all together. Sounds obvious, but it’s a real winner.

The Vintage Guide For The Vintage Bride By Annie traditional vintage theme. My personal adored eras are the 60s and 70s and they allow plenty of scope for injecting some fantastical fun into the big day. The selection is vast, from the mini to the maxi and there are a lot more of these dresses on the market. The 60s mini dresses offer a stylish alternative to those who perhaps want a less formal wedding. Whilst my motto is Vintage is Always Best, don’t feel disappointed if you simply can’t squeeze your butt into that size 14…. It’s not you it’s the dress! Vintage sizes bear little or no relation to modern measurements. Sometimes ` lady luck is just not on your side, no matter how many fairs you visit or websites you trawl through. Fret not, if this is the case and consider having a reproduction made. You can always compensate with genuine period accessories. Transport needs to continue the vintage vibe….after all if you’re dressed to kill you want to arrive in style! I found a local company that supply a range of vintage transport including a fabulous pink 1960s Cadillac for the bridal party and an array of other vehicles including single and double decker

buses for the guests. Once these big decisions have been made it’s really all in the detail and the small touches. Magazines and online sites are full to the brim of ideas and I’m constantly finding new inspiration. A few keepers for me were - place names from vintage scrabble sets, double decker buses (with bars), fish and chip wedding breakfast, inflatable games, a makeshift vintage photo booth complete with Polaroid land cameras and a table full of vintage and fancy dress accessories.

ay Find M u o “Y Saving f l e s r u Yo ne” ll Fortu a m S A The fact is, I have dreamt about this day for a long time, and I want it to be perfect. Perfect and very vintage. Don’t feel constrained, run wild with your imagination and be creative. You may find yourself saving a small fortune for the sake of a few novel but non-costly ideas. A recent trip to the South of England Country Show inspired wartime wedding

ideas of land girls, tractor rides, an array of home made jams and pickles and huge hay bales to sit on. So, whatever you decide on, don that vintage dress that you worked so hard to find and pride yourself on producing such a unique and memorable event. Finally, true to my word, after much research and scouring I have found two perfect dresses that made my heart go pitter-patter. A little 60s, angel-sleeved, bohemian number for the ceremony and one very slinky sequinned late 70s number for the evening. So, with the wedding date firmly set (next June if you’re wondering) I have a scrapbook bursting with ideas and a plan. Although, knowing me and my Tinkerbelle tendencies, next week I may fancy a bit of 1930s... oh dear…anyone know the number for Vintaholics Anonymous?

What Katie Did is the leading faux vintage lingerie brand in the UK today. Their collections are all inspired by Katie’s collection of ‘40s and ‘50s lingerie from the iconic spiral stitched bullet bra made famous by sweater girl starlets of the ‘50s to steel boned waspies which were an essential part of Dior’s ‘New Look’ in the late ‘40s.

Although their ranges are inspired screen sirens of the past their lingerie is worn by today’s A-listers including Rihanna, Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss. It often

appears on the silver screen with recent appearances in ‘The X Men’ and ‘Nowhere Boy’ and on tv shows including ‘The Hour’, ‘Land Girls’ and ‘Miss Marple’. What Katie Did was founded in 1999 by Katie Halford, who started the company with just £100. Katie was a big fan of 1950s fashion but found it difficult to source original lingerie. The first piece she designed was the aforementioned bullet bra, which continues to be one of their best sellers (over the years it has been stocked by Liberty of London, Topshop, ASOS and Urban Outfitters).

Their AW11 collection has a strong fetish influence, which isn’t surprising as Katie started her career as a corset fitter at fetish company Skin Two. It includes striking Deco-esque features on lingerie and contrasting PVC and velvet overboning on corsets. We think Bettie Page would like it! What Katie Did’s lingerie can be found online at whatkatiedid.com, in their two boutiques in London and Hollywood, and in independent lingerie stores worldwide.

NANA KNEALE’S RECIPE

“My mother used to bake every weekend and this recipe used to be baked in my house by my mother in the 1930’s. The recipe was passed on to her in 1927 when she married by her mother in law”

Ingredients: 1lb Self Raising Flour 8oz Caster Sugar 8oz Butter 2 Eggs Raspberry Jam

Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the cubed butter. Mix the two together until they crumble. Add the sugar and mix it with the beaten egg until you get a soft dough.

STEP TWO

Divide the dough into two equal parts. Roll the first part into a rectange roughly 1/8inch thick and roll onto a baking tray. To do this easily roll the dough around the rolling pin and unroll onto the tray.

EE STEP THR Spread the jam on the dough and leave a 1/4inch boarder all around. Dampen the boarder with water. Then roll the second piece of dough to exactly the same size.

R STEP FOU Place the second piece of dough on top of the jam. Crimp the edges using your fingers or a fork and then pierce the top. Brush all over the top with the remaining egg. Lastly sprinkle some granulated sugar.

E STEP FIV

Place in the over and cook on Number 5 - 190c / Fan over 180c for 25 - 30 minutes. Once cooked cut the cake into pieces once it is cold.

What a little gem

to stumble across as I ambled down the Archway Road. Having heard there was a fairly new fair now featuring at The Boogaloo, Highgate, every first Saturday of the month, I knew as a vintage (and tea!) lover I had to seek it out! With a variety of art, vintage and craft stalls, this friendly little fair combines a great atmosphere, great shopping and great cake! The chance to buy a fabulous vintage dress for a birthday night out, plus the accessories, plus the gift for the friend and the cake to take to her, was just perfect. And the icing on the cake was the opportunity to step back in time with a fabulous vintage hair and make-over by Pincurls and Pout!

and Gift Fair was born as the venture between the two sisters of A Room in my House, and a friend, to act as a stage for small crafty and vintage brands to showcase their ranges at a very low cost to ‘test the water’ as it were, with their products, to the public. The website www.vintageteaparty andgiftfair.co.uk and the facebook page allow advertising reach to so many people and word is spreading fast.

So far the stalls have been as varied from hand produced puppets (www. twistedmyth.co.uk) to organic hand-produced liqueurs (www.alchemistdreams.co.uk)! And to top it all off each month there is a to die for delicious cake and cup cake stall where you can either buy and eat sitting at the charming little tea party tables or take away – and with bargain prices of £1 or 4 for £3.50 who could resist. With flavours of chocolate cinnamon crumble, and raspberry and almond – my tastebuds were very excited! All that coupled with some cool acoustic

throughout the day really does ensure you are entertained for an afternoon at this cool North London pub! Already picked up by local press and the odd celebrity this is a fast growing, charming little fair which is a definite stop-off visit for anyone in the North London area, every first Saturday of the month. Visit the website for more details or just follow your nose to the cakes!

tage Fair in V s ’ y n n Pe First of all, I want to wish Lucy good luck with The Vintage Rag Mag. This is something we in the Vintage business have long been anxious for. In addition to running her own shop, Lucy has taken a pitch at each of my first two Vintage Fairs in Potters Bar and is booked in for the third fair on September 4th. The quality and range of goods available at my June fair was super and dealers had travelled from as far as Suffolk, Brighton and The Midlands to attend. Having refined and redirected much of my advertising after the first fair in February, I was very pleased with the noticeable increase in attendance of serious vintage fans. Buyers, both trade and public, were suitably impressed judging by the filled bags and small furniture heading to the car park.

With three separate shopping areas, changing facilities and ‘The Tea Room’ style café all on one level, it is no wonder people were smiling…..or was it the toe-tapping tunes? I’m lucky to have met many wonderful, helpful people this year (dealers, buyers and other organisers) and look forward to meeting many more. Here’s to the next hot event on Sunday September 4th. And to misquote The Rolling Stones…..

way The Bark intage s&V Antique r Fai I am a great supporter of village halls because I think if you don’t use it you ‘lose it.’ So when I picked up a flyer for an antiques and vintage fair in the north of Hertfordshire I was keen to investigate. On arrival the hall had good parking with a car park directly outside the village hall and further parking across the road. On entering the fair I was struck by how much diversity there was, from clothing, to ceramics, jewellery to furniture it was brilliant! It was one of those places you wished became a shop as you would have all these unique things in one place. While you shopped they played 50’s music, there was so much to see at each stall. All the stall holders were lovely, genuinely helpful and ready to offer advice or information not bombard you with sales patter. After 40minutes of riffling through rails and looking at china we decided to

be sensible about our purchases and have a cuppa before buying anything. We were about five minutes just at the tea stand deciding what lovely homemade cake to try. I ended up choosing a cupcake and my friend went for a fruit slice. Both were delicious. enjoy the weather. After arguing up the pros and cons of our chosen objects (my friend insisted to me that despite being broke she ‘desperately’ needed a new rabbit shaped jelly mould,) and I justified a gorgeous 20’s style tea dress, we spent our money and made our way home. Neither of us had ever heard of a village named Barkway before but we were so glad we went, it turned out to be our best shopping discovery yet.

I was not disappointed. This fair hosted by Vintazia ‘Friday Night’ Vintage Fairs lived up to every word. Filled with 20 vintage stalls and buzzing with vintage enthusiasts, I made my way around this breathtaking venue, sipping on a Pimm’s and Lemonade and listening to live music! Not only do I find Fashion and Accessories but a ‘shop window display’ furniture stall, Stunning china, a hair and make up stall and the chance of a pin up photography shoot. I also stumble across an advertisement board for Sam’s Secret Supper Club, I’m even more intrigued. I’m told underground supper clubs are the next big thing on the social scene. amongst good friendly company.. Sounds like fun! I’m told by the host Samantha, she has carefully cherry picked all of her stalls. Bringing a new approach to vintage fairs and awareness of vintage to the local community is her ambition. Having been a trader herself, Samantha wants to bring something fresh to the ever growing vintage world and with a debut like this, she’s certainly doing just that! If your wondering what to plan of a Friday evening, I would highly recommend popping along to one of these. This fair is certainly one to keep an eye on.. Vintazia ‘Friday Night’ Vintage fairs can be found on Facebook and future dates will be announced very soon.

They had a real OMG! experience, ‘What have we been missing all these years??’ It was a lovely event all-round, plenty of time for browsing, beautiful things to buy, music to swing along to and regular top-ups of tea and homemade cakes. Hard to resist one last dash around the stalls

Vintage f o y o J The Fair Watford ‘just incase I’d missed something first time round….’ Traders were selling masses of summer dresses and original vintage dressing-room prints were a real hit. They were even looking after each other’s stalls to sneak off to get their nails done by The Beauty Queens in their fab retro Beauty Parlour. Love Alexandra were so busy having a ball, that they left their dressing mirror behind. But you know what they say? If you leave something behind it means you’ll be back again. And you know what? We will be, that’s for sure! Julie and Christine are the ‘Joy of Vintage ladies’ and their love of a good Vintage Fair shines through. They bring together fabulous sellers offering a wide range of vintage goodies, so no-one goes home disappointed or empty handed! They feel strongly that a Fair isn’t complete without the

Advert little extra’s and the personal touch. Live musicians & swing dancers are the icing on the cup cake! We think they have succeeded and then some. They really do bring out the Joy of Vintage! Their next fair is on 24th September. We’ll be there, do come and join us all. Just in case you can’t wait that long why not try the Joy of Vintage Pop-Up Shop & Tea Room at Watford Museum, 18th, 19th & 20th August. Find them on www. thejoyofvintage.co.uk, Facebook and Twitter.
