a total of eight companies, therefore only declaring half of her commercially related activities.
Members of the Cambiemos political group in Orihuela have called for the immediate resignation of the Councillor for Tourism and the Orihuela Costa, Sofía Álvarez, for “distorting” assets statements posted by the council aimed at providing transparency of their activities.
The possibility of legal action exists if the declaration is found to be in breach of Article 75 of the Law on Local Government, which is currently being investigated, as it clearly establishes the obligation to include the declaration of assets, but aside from the threat of legal action, Bernabé feels that the first stage is for the Partido Popular to correct this infringement and correctly declare those assets publically.
Karlos Bernabé has filed a complaint saying that in addition to being involved with the municipal responsibility of tourism, Álvarez is listed as being involved in four companies which partake in business activities relating to this field, which is a potential conflict of interest in itself, but moreover is incorrect, as Álvarez is in fact involved in
Bernabé describes the declaration as a “flagrant lie” having presented documents from the Companies Register which lists Álvarez in the 8 companies, and the public declaration of assets fails to detail these additional roles. Continued on Page 2

Therefore, Bernabé has asked the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, to remove the responsibilities of powers for the tourism department until, at least, the declaration is corrected. Reporting the presentation of the information as indicative of “serious irregularities”, Bernabé is adamant that the involvement of a councillor in commercial activities which could benefit from the relationship with the municipal council could lead to a possible “conflict of interest” not unlike a case from the previous Partido Popular government which saw a previous tourism councillor, Pepa Ferrando, under investigation by the courts on a corruption case, after businesses directly linked to the councillor were offered lucrative public contracts. By failing to declare these assets in the public forum could lead to a distortion of contracts and procurement procedures once again, as “if you hide this information it is impossible to control” if these companies are benefitting from the contract award process, especially if those contracts fall below the minimum threshold which require tenders to be submitted, when councillors can “invite” companies to do the work, independent to a bidding
process. For her part, Álvarez has reported that of the four companies listed in the declaration, “only two are active”, two others were absorbed by one of those declared, two have no activities and two are in the process of being dissolved. She also says that she only owns a 1% share in the two companies absorbed into one, and a 25% share in the most active company, Álvarez World Tours S.L., the company which runs a travel agency where Álvarez works as an employee. “The accusations are absolute nonsense,” Álvarez, who has threatened Cambiemos with legal action, told the Leader. “Initially Bernabé claimed that I had failed to declare my assets. He quickly realised they he was wrong and changed the complaint to one of a conflict of interest. However my involvement is absolutely minimal but it is always completely open, and I am extremely careful that none of the companies have any association with council business.” “I do this job because of my commitment to the Coast. I have always lived on the Orihuela Costa and I will continue to do so. I simply want to make it a better place for us all. I have the total support of the mayor”

Torrevieja Policia Locale to get Tasers Torrevieja’s mayor has said that he wants to see more control exerted over the Policia Locale. At a press conference last week he was critical of the fact that more than 50% of the officers, of which approximately 160 are employed in the town, come and go without any formal booking on or off procedure. He said that after eight months in office he now needs to see changes that make them more accountable the result of which is the launch of a review into their working practices. The first thing that it will introduce is the mandatory requirement for officers to sign on and off duty when either starting or completing their shifts. He said that this will remove any temptation of fraud when submitting their work sheets and ensure that they are only paid for the hours they work. The CCOO union said that the measure would be difficult to introduce in view of the fact that many of the agents begin and end their working day in places other than the police headquarters which is where the documentation would be held. Meanwhile it was also announced that the Torrevieja force is to be armed with taser stun guns, designed to incapacitate a person or an animal by electric shock. Almost 60 of the weapons have been ordered by the town council in order to provide additional defensive security measures for the officers. The model to be purchased is the X-26 which is currently used by over 17,000 security and police forces all over the world. It is manu-

REFERENDUM ON BRITISH MEMBERSHIP OF THE EU There is currently a lot of speculation amongst Expats about what might happen should there be a NO VOTE to membership of the EU when the referendum is held on June 23. On Friday the Leader put the question to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This was their reply:
factured in Arizona, USA, where it has been in production for over 25 years The mayor also announced the further purchase of 25 new pistols which will be used to replace the old outdated revolvers carried by armed officers.
Former mayor calls for priority with new La Mata Sports Hall
Last May, while still in local government, the Torrevieja Partido Popular earmarked a plot of land in La Mata, namely Enclave 7, for conversion into an underground car park, thus improving the ability to park vehicles in the town. In addition, the upper level of the plot was to see the construction of a sports hall covering and area of

1,367 square metres. As might be expected, since that initial statement there has been little progress. However, the councillor is now calling on the ruling coalition to ensure that the matter is given some priority. The former mayor explained that this new sports hall would not cost anything to build, as selling the plot of land for the car park through a public auction would mean that the income derived from the sale will go to fund the new facility. The plans show that the La Mata sports centre will be fully covered, and will feature a main track versatile for all type of sport, including football, handball, basketball, etc., seating for about 500 people and ancillary facilities such as locker rooms, a multipurpose room, toilets and other technical equipment. Dolon said at a press conference last week that the town "is crying out for this sports facility and that residents have been demanding for years, but eight months after the initial first steps were taken by the PP government there has been no further movement”. He asked the Department of Heritage if they intend to continue with the project, because, to date, they have not bothered to acknowledge or respond to his correspondence on the subject. He said that the construction of the two facilities are long overdue and that they would be a major boost for the local residents
Statement to The Leader from the FCO “UKG isn’t speculating on possible referendum outcomes. The Prime Minister believes Britain’s best future lies within a reformed European Union, if the necessary changes can be agreed. “The Prime Minister has said that, if he succeeds, he will campaign to keep the UK in a reformed European Union but, if the UK’s concerns are not addressed, he rules nothing out. “The government has committed to producing clear information, ahead of the referendum on: the outcome of renegotiation, rights and obligations in EU law, an assessment of alternatives to membership and publishing the process for leaving. All those eligible who live overseas are strongly encouraged to register to vote in the referendum, so they can have their say.” Editor: If there were a NO VOTE the future circumstances would depend very much on what the Spanish authorities might do or change following such a result, on which of course we can’t speculate – it would be their call. At the moment it is a near impossible question for anyone to answer. But all expats should check their eligibility to vote in the referendum. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Customs Confusion I’ve had a long running battle with the Aduana, the customs people, over here for many years. Despite various explanations of their purpose in life, I have never really understood the logic of how this faceless bureaucracy operates, if indeed any logic is used. My detest and distrust of this all-powerful organisation came originally from ordering a simple cable from eBay for my computer, which could not be purchased on the islands. The total cost was around four pounds, which included postage, for which the Aduana decided to add a few cents for IGIC (the Canary Islands’ equivalent of VAT) together with a handling charge of around 15 euros, as well as IGIC on top of their ‘service charge’. Like a fool, on this occasion, I paid up, as I desperately needed the cable. My letter of complaint fell on deaf ears and I heard no more. Don’t misunderstand me, I have no objection to paying my fair share of taxes; indeed, they are fundamental to the operation of any civilised society. As the recent Google tax scandal has shown, people get terribly upset when taxes appear to be unfair and seem to favour one particular group of the population or major multinational companies at the expense of ordinary people. Taxes need to be fair and transparent to be effective. Over the years I have had several bad experiences with the Aduana, often resulting in me refusing to accept delivery, which I hate doing as we have a
very nice postman, who I do not like upsetting. My mother’s words of “cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face” also spring to mind on some occasions when I have rejected a delivery. However, I do object to being taken for a ride over something that is clearly not fair. As an expat living on these islands, I know that many of us rely on companies, such as eBay and Amazon, to purchase items that we cannot find locally. Speaking to Canarian and Spanish residents, it appears that this tax is often applied more to expats than the local population, although I cannot prove this. Many expats have become resigned to having to pay a hefty surcharge on Christmas gifts kindly sent by relatives and friends in the UK. Even the odd DVD and small gift tends to have the postman knocking at the door for a contribution to the Aduana fund. Worst still are the large courier companies whose standard ‘service charges’ can be eye watering for simply collecting a few euros of tax for the Aduana, as well as being responsible for severe delays as items are held up in Madrid whilst phone calls are made and the required paperwork is produced. What a waste of time and energy! I mentioned earlier that the system is illogical. Several months ago, I ordered a camera from Amazon in the UK. It cost over 400 pounds, and in true Amazon tradition I was delighted to discover that the 20 per cent UK VAT was taken off the invoice before I paid, since I live outside the EU for tax purposes. It is then both understandable and acceptable to pay tax in the Canary Islands of 7 per cent upon delivery, which I was fully expecting. Surprisingly, in this case, my new camera was delivered tax free, without even a murmur of a request for tax or a service charge levy. Maybe I was just lucky on this occasion. Now for the good news; the Canary Islands’ Government is currently considering raising the minimum value of postal items for tax purposes from 22 euros to 150 euros. This proposed change would mean that residents of the Canary Islands would be able to make purchases online that have the same conditions as other people within the EU. Let us hope that common sense finally prevails. Glasses donned by delegates to the learning events show the reduced visual perception of dementia sufferers.
British Consulate works to increase awareness of Dementia British Consulates in Alicante and Malaga are working with expat support organisations
including the Royal British Legion, Age Concern España, HELP and Age Care to improve
services for people affected by dementia. The consulates this week hosted
learning events in Alicante, Murcia and Malaga, led by UK dementia experts Sue Brewin and Su Burns. The meetings sought to help support groups understand the different types of dementia and ways to overcome barriers to communication with people affected by the disorder. According to research from the UK-based charity Alzheimer’s Society, the number of people diagnosed with dementia in Western Europe will double by 2050, with one in three people likely to be affected. This means that organisations that help British Nationals will face more cases and need expertise. Southern and eastern Spain are home to large numbers of British residents, many of whom are elderly and some with substantial care needs, but who may have little or no resources or family to support them.
www.theleader.info To qualify for social services such as home help, British nationals must have previously registered with the Spanish authorities. Charmaine Arbouin, British Consul for Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, says: “Organisations such as Cruz Roja Española and Age Concern can be a lifeline for people affected by dementia. However, they cannot meet all your needs. I strongly urge expats to register on the padron and for healthcare now, before health issues arise. You can then access support from the Spanish system via the local health centre and town hall social services when you need it. “If you fail to register then you are unlikely to get social services help later.” Dementia covers several types of brain disorder, including

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form. There is no cure and the disorders are usually progressive. Common symptoms include memory loss, confusion, speech difficulties and problems with understanding. More than 20 arrests at illegal cockfight Over 20 people were arrested in Los Montesinos last weekend when officers from the Guardia Civil raided a farm on the outskirts of the town where an illegal cockfight was taking place. The detainees, all men and of Spanish nationality, were charged with the alleged mistreatment of pets. Agents have had suspicions of illegal cockfighting for some months so with the launch of Operación ROCAREÑIDERO (Rockpit), an ongoing investigation has been focussed on the Vega Baja while evidence was being gathered. The result of this research located the exact building, a farm in the town of Los Montesinos, which was located on a secluded site, hidden among orange groves and lemon trees, making it difficult to spot. The raid took place on Sunday afternoon where 26 Gamecocks were found (several of them wounded) a cockpit (an illegal arena for cockfighting), together with blades, spurs and several knives as well as 5,500 euros in cash . Many of the “cockers” had cut off their birds’ spurs, the natural bony protrusions on the legs, so that more deadly, artificial weapons could be strapped to their legs. A vet accompanied the officers to the site where he treated the injured birds. A total of 25 people were eventually detained, although many initially escaped by jumping the fence of the farm

Balaclava or the Alamo! Dear Editor ‘Cannons to the left, cannons to the right’ oh dear, oh dear, what a lot of fuss! For the record, I did not misunderstand Sr Martin's comments, however, the only aspect of them with which I did agree was his assertion that there was too much politics involved. When I look around the urbanisation I do not see it as the run-down hovel it is being portrayed as in the media and I find it hard to believe that I am the only resident who has the temerity to offer an alternative opinion to that which is currently on display. The fact is, I don't like one-sided arguments and I will speak up for what I believe is fair. I say again, things can always be better and I have no problem with people standing up for their rights and speaking their minds but please let's keep matters in proportion; with all that's wrong in the world at present, I can think of many more things to get steamed up about than
the exaggerated 'parlous' state of affairs on Urb. La Marina. With reference to the comment about ”his beloved blue bollards”, yes, they are close to my heart since it was as a result of my formal request to the former deputy mayor, Jeff Wiszniewski , whom I always found to be a most amenable and reasonable man to deal with, that they were erected in the first place; however, more important are the 'sleeping policemen' and traffic sign some twenty-five metres or so before them as they slow the traffic significantly before the corner is reached. This has greatly reduced the number and frequency of accidents experienced prior to their installation, which included a fatality at this notorious black-spot. It is true that there were originally eight blue bollards, which in my opinion was overkill, and since they were constantly being knocked down by wide vehicles or those turning left
Ciudadanos have criticized the Policia Local in Benejúzar for carrying out their routine patrols in an unmarked vehicle. They say that the car has not been approved and should only be used for private purposes. ‘There could be serious consequences if it were involved in an accident’ said one party member. ‘It does not have the appropriate documentation and it should not be driven in public service. This is just another example of the poor management by the Department of Public Safety.’
into Marina Sol, quite sensibly, they've not been replaced. In my opinion the present set-up is quite sufficient and, interestingly, neither of those that remain have been damaged; more to the point, though, there have been no accidents. Somebody wrote that it would be a good idea to erect a barrier but this would be impracticable as without road widening there is insufficient space. Finally I should like to assure my critics that I have no intention of running for council or any other politically associated position as I subscribe to the view that, to coin a phrase, 'cobblers should stick to their last'. THEY JUST DON’T LISTEN Dear Editor With reference to Mr Turner´s letter, and anyone else who keeps referring to calling into the friendly Council Offices in Calle Madrid, La Marina Urbanisation to lodge complaints in English, and stating they will listen. They don´t! Way back in July last year when it was apparent there was a problem with the bins overflowing and not being emptied, my husband & I called into the offices and spoke to Snr Paulino Herrero about the problem. He made a telephone call. After the call we were told that a new contract was being drawn up and after the August holidays (at that time about 6 weeks), we were having new bins replacing the old damaged ones. As the PP had not long been in sole power we gave him the benefit of the doubt. We have lived here for 13 years and always had them emptied every night without fail until June/July last year. Yes, I know if I lived in the UK I would be lucky if they were emptied every fortnight etc. but I live in Spain, where they have community bins, not in the UK where each house has its own bin.
and left. Neither of our complaints had been dealt with. By now Residents on the urbanisations were also complaining about the bins, weeds, lights not being on, the state of the roads, bollards, etc. The whole thing was beginning to escalate. In October we visited the office again about the bins. This time the excuse was the tip was closed due to an Industrial dispute. Again we were told that we were getting new bins and a new contract was being drawn up. In November fed up of being fobbed off, we wrote to Valencia and Alicante in Spanish and complained about the lack of interest the council had and told them how our complaints were being ignored. Along with photographic evidence and our letter we sent contrasting photographs of San Fulgencio village. Valencia had obviously written to the Council as in late December we received a letter back along with a copy of a letter from our council stating: “The Mayor will to take the necessary steps within the possibilities that our municipal budget, allows us to solve the deficiencies described in the referral letter with in order to improve the functioning of the municipal utilities in the cited urbanization contributing so to the well-being of the residents who reside there”. (Translated from Spanish) Little did we know then they had not got a budget in place. It was weeks later the budget story broke. After the way the Urbanisations were treated over the Christmas period, over the Christmas festivities and lights and the amount of complaints that were being aired, was the last straw.
No sooner had we got in the door than Herrero got very irate Holidaymakers were out in force, the bin situation began to escalate. In September we went to see him again about another matter. No sooner we had got in the door he became very irate and kept telling us the bins were being sorted again telling us there will be new bins and a new contract being drawn up. We spoke told him we had not come about the bins, and spoke about the other matter
This is why a meeting was held to see if it was viable to form a Residents Association. That is why and how MURA was formed. For the residents to have a voice to say what their problems are and to try and resolve them with whoever the Political Party is in power. Not for the problems to fall on deaf ears and to be told lie after lie, week after week. There are a lot of things on the Urbanisations that need attention these are just the tip of the iceberg. Last week we went into the Calle Madrid office to make an appointment to see the Mayor, and whilst there again spoke to Snr Herrero about the bin situation not being emptied on a Saturday night as
ours was again over flowing onto the road. He again made the so called telephone call and told us after Friday´s collection the refuge men have to travel four hours to dispose of the waste and four hours back, so they cannot empty the bins on a Saturday… (What they do during the week is anyone´s guess?) AGAIN, we were promised new bins and was told a new contract was being drawn up… A few days later the saga of the bins broke and guess what? There has not been a contract for 46 months and our money is being paid to Ginssa

cash in hand with two rises while there has been no contract. This has been a blatant lie by the Council through Snr Herrero who constantly keeps up the pretence of a new contract and new bins just to keep us quiet and be a good spokesman for the Mayor. With all the alleged corruption claims and misuse of Public funds, you Mr Turner wonder why the residents have no faith in the current council. Advance moves reports on UK housing mini boom
Moves international removals have reported on a 2016 first quarter mini boom in the UK housing market that has resulted in a significant increase in their UK to Spain Removals services. The surge in demand for their removals services has been put down to a number of factors that have all resulted in a very busy period for Advance Moves in what is traditionally a quieter time of year for the removals industry during January to March. The prime influence appears to be the British chancellors increase in stamp duty on buy to let homes that comes into effect in April and has therefore resulted in a rush to buy before the new higher levels of stamp duty come into effect. With more properties suddenly being sold in the UK and combined with the terrible weather conditions that the UK has experienced this winter , many UK residents are selling up and contacting Advance moves to undertake their relocation to Spain at the earliest convenience. Many of Advance moves clients are making the most of the free of charge storage period they offer so that they know that their effects are safe and secure whilst they complete on their new home.
Advance Moves has also been investing heavily in their new mobile friendly website that offers a quick quote facility so a client can enter minimal information to obtain a quotation for their removal. The new site at www.advancemoves.com has been well received by the public as it offers a lot of information on the removals process and why it is so important to choose the right remover for an international removal. The UK housing market mini boom has also had a positive effect on properties being sold in Spain, With more UK buyers entering Spain with money in their pockets , and keen for a quick purchase. Once again Advance moves has seen an increase in clients moving from Spain to the UK. This is also partially due to the associations that Advance moves has with many of Spain's best performing estate agents, so that a client can sell their property and organise their removal with minimal delay. Advance moves are looking forward to a busy year as the increased activity in the housing market now, will have a snowball effect for the rest of the year for Spain's number one UK/Spain mover.

Algorfa immigrant scam detected

Growth For Local Airports The latest figures published by AENA show continued growth in passenger numbers with over a third of all low cost flights travelling between the Costa and UK. Alicante-Elche airport showed a January increase of 19% over the same month last year reaching almost 600,000 passengers. Of these, 216,000, or 36% came from the UK, followed by 46,000 from Germany. Meanwhile at San Javier Airport, 82% of all passengers were on UK flights, showing an increase of just 2.8% over last year with a total of 19,500.
Officers from the National Police have arrested a 45 year old man in Algorfa on suspicion of offering jobs to immigrants in exchange for payment. The man is suspected of offering to legalise the individuals through an employment contract for 525 euro, of which 5 individuals have so far been identified as having been of Colombian and Dominican nationalities. The investigation began following the information received from the Consulate General of Spain in
Paraguay, who reported a page on a social network site offering “Jobs for immigrants in Spain in luxury hotels and farms in the Alicante province. The page showed photographs of the idyllic life that the victims would be promised in exchange for the 525 processing fee. Although the arrest was made some weeks ago, the information has only just come to light after details of the case were released to the press.
Corvera estimates down Murcia Regional Minister Francisco BernabĂŠ has said that by the year 2025 Corvera Airport passenger numbers will be between 2.5 and 3.5 million per year. The figures produced for the 2016 Airport Business Plan are far more realistic, he suggests, than the 1.5 million forecast for 2015 which were entered into the previous plan. It was anticipated that the figure would then spiral upward with the airport quickly welcoming 10 million passengers a year. When asked about Corvera opening the minister said he refused to speculate on any date.

Fines for Estate Agents advertising property without EPC in Catalonia The “Generalitat de Catalunya” Catalonian Government (Catalonia is located north of Valencia), through the Catalan Consumer Agency (ACC ) has officially published (12th of January of 2016) that disciplinary proceedings have started against 42 Real Estate Agencies for advertising properties without having the obligatory Energy Performance Certificates (EPC). We are waiting to receive confirmation if these fining processes are also to be extended to the property owners.
The Public Department informs that inspections found these Agencies advertised properties without the obligatory Energy label, in violation of the Law and the rights of consumers. In some cases, Estate Agents have been advertising that the certificate is "pending", as a mechanism to avoid the obligation. But authorities informed that the 42 fining processes started subsequently after the agencies failed to demonstrate that the certificate was being processed, according to sources of the ACC. Please visit the official information at the Government website following this link:http://bit.ly/1Q94D1m Please be aware that ultimately the responsibility of having an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is down to the owner of the property (fines depend on the kind of infraction: marketing without an EPC, falsifying an EPC or not using a competent technician to issue the document). So if your Estate Agent is advertising / marketing your property without an EPC (to sell or rent) please be advised they are risking themselves to be fined and also potentially risking their clients and owners to receive a fine.

Sporting Life Misfits v The Tavern 11-1 Karl, Billy & Sonia took on Ian, Stuart and Richard in the first triples. With a first win from the Misfits setting the pace for the rest of the evening Billy 100, and Karl finishing on 38, D17. Not a particularly high scoring match but some good efforts on both sides with scores in the 80’s and legs down to double finishes. With the half time scores 6:0 Tavenor Ian took out Misfits George in the first single but sadly this wasn’t enough to lead The Tavern to a draw as the Misfits took their team to an impressive 11-1 finish. The league would like to take this opportunity to wish Sonja Cooper a Belated Happy 50th birthday, pictured having fun! Tradewinds Pirates v Pint Depot Queens 9-3 Tonight saw an eagerly awaited match between Tradewind Pirates and The Pint Depot Queens. The

By Gilly Kirby
first triples saw Michelle Lane, son Harvey and Eddie Hirst up against Vi Turner, Lynn Fozzard and Christine Cummins and despite a fine 90 from Vi, an excellent 111 from Michelle and D16 from Harvey saw the Pirates take the first game. Next up, John Lane, Gilly Kirby and Mike Snow were up against Rachele Broadhead , Marie Cummins and Debbie Weight. Despite John's 92, Marie, switching between bar duties and darts tied the scores with D7 and already the Queen's singing was in full flow. Next up, the Lanes were up against Vi, Lynn and Marie with John hitting the first 100 of the evening and hitting D4 for the win. All the doubles went the way of the Pirates to go into the break 5-1 up. In the first Gilly and Mike for the Pirates against Chris and Rachele saw Gilly hit 91 and won with D2. Next Michelle and Harvey against Vi and Lynn really shone with Michelle scoring 95 and 83, Harvey 116 and 100 and finishing on D7. In the final doubles John and Eddie were against Debbie and Marie and with 84 from John and a finish on Di together with 83 from Eddie the Pirates got to the halfway stage happy with their efforts so far. After an excellent Chilli and Rice the singles commenced with John for the Pirates against The Queen's Rachele. The Chilli obviously had an effect on John as he proceeded to hit 81, 100, 85 and 100 along with a D1 finish. Next the Queen's Marie was up against Pirate Michelle and with Marie hitting some good scores, 74, 85, 82 she then finished the game on D7 again. Christine was next up against Harvey, could she continue the winning streak? Sadly not as Harvey with 83 and a D3 finish put paid to that. Lynn for the Queen’s against yoga pal Gilly saw some good scoring 80, 85 from Lynn and 87 from Gilly. Both down to the double, Gilly on the dreaded D1 but it was Lynn with D3 to make it 7-3. The last but one game saw Vi against Eddie. Vi hit a 98 but Eddie with 85 and D6 won. The last game saw Queen Debbie against Mike (snowy) and despite a good 79 Mike hit 82 and 85 then finished the match on D2 to give the Pirates a 9-3 win. Joint man of the match for the Pirates, John and Harvey Lane both hitting 3 double finishes. Report by Terry Kirby Breakaways v El Capitan 2-10 The Capitan’s took a strong lead from the outset with Storey, Waddell and Filer taking the triples and a total of 4 x 100. Waller & Hickman for Breakaway also hitting a ton a piece. Scott took a double and a single leg, also a 120 for Breakaways and an impressive T20 D20 finish. The Capitan’s played on to win with some great scores and brilliant finishes. Hub Hellraisers v Hen’s Teeth 4-8 First triples started well with Amanda, Lesley and Val for the Hellraisers v James, Joseph and Graham for the Hen’s Teeth. Val thrilled and shocked us by getting all three darts on the board. Plenty of high scores, Amanda 82, Joseph an 81 and Graham 85. With James of the Hen’s taking the game on D1. Second triples Saw our Captain Cheryl, Sue and Alison take on Winnie, Levi and Evie. Another loud and good game . High scores from Hellraiser “Super Sue” getting 81 and 89. The Hen’s took the game on another D1. The third saw Liz’s impressive return for the Hellraisers, with Sarah and Celestine playing Danny, Jan and Tony. High scores from Celestine 78 and Sarah 77. Liz for the Hellraisers took the game with yet another D1. The first Doubles game saw “One dart Val” get a nice 64 !The Hens boys eventually took the game With James on D2. Next Doubles had some nice high scoring with 70 from Cheryl and an 81 from Graham. Lesley for the Hellraisers took the game on a nice tidy D8. 3rd Doubles game saw “Super Sub” Liz for the Hellraisers wow us with an 82 and a couple of Bulls with Danny from the Hen’s taking the game with D1. After some tasty hotpot and éclairs, (cheers Cheryl), the singles commenced, Amanda and Joseph throwing first, The Hen’s took the game on D6. S2 saw
Hellraiser “Super Sue” take on Graham with a nice 90 from Graham who eventually won the game on D9. S3 Had James throw an impressive 99 to take the game on D1. Next up was Sarah for the Hellraisers v Evie for the Hens, with Sarah taking the game on D1 (yay). The 5th singles game was a long and hard fought match that nearly went to drawing straws to get a winner, Jan for the Hens eventually won on D1. The final game of the night saw our Cheryl take on Winnie, with our Hellraiser Capitan taking the game with a nice tidy and impressive D10, the roof came off again! Thanks to the Hens Teeth for a great night of darts and again thanks to the Hellraisers hosts also Simon and Cam of the Hub for their support and hospitality. Report by Sarah Junction Jaguars v Evolution 5-7 Well a depleted team of 4 Evolutioners skidded into the junction with only seconds to spare before the 8:30pm deadline. Ah Ha thought the Jaguars, this should be a comfortable win as we start off with 3 points already from a forgone, triples, pair and singles. Well apart from a slight glimmer in the singles from Wendy Woo Hayward and her 72, D4 finish over Nikki Park and Cynthia Jevon’s 81, 83, D4 over John Williams 82, 84, all the other games were won by the fantastic four! Williams chalked up four of the finishes, 2 in the two triples D19 and D1, one in the pairs with 93, D10 and one in his two singles 93, D10. A rather sober and well behaved Doggett got D2 in his pairs game with Stephanie Burke who scored 74, 82 and then he scooped up his singles against Gail Todd by scoring 60, 94 and finishing on D1. He also scored an impressive 121 and 100 in his triples perhaps because he refused an offer of a customary shot from the opposing team! (not like our Jak at all). Ms Burke secured her singles game against Hildy-Do-Da Wilkinson by getting the D3 first. Young Nikki Park didn’t find a finish but got some good scores 67, 71, 105 (T15, T15, S15) to help her team to victory. What a disaster for the Jaguars, who despite finding a few good scores: Poo Schofield 60, 111, 110; Hayward 79, 72; Wilkinson 115, 95; Todd 74, 84, 85; Jevons 76, 92, 81 and 83 just couldn’t seem to find their finishes despite every game coming down to a double for both teams. Busty barmaid Ivill and Sneeze Green only featured in the triples games as their performances lacked a little lustre on the night and Captain de Lacy, fresh from the operating theatre, didn’t have a leg to stand on as she and Psycho Simpson crashed out of their one and only pairs game finding neither a high score or a check-out. Report by Simone de Lacy Porterhouse v Hub Hyenas 4-8 A good evening for both teams with The Hub coming through to win. According to Sue Sanderson of the Porterhouse, there were quite a few high scores on both sides. In Shaun and Toddy’s double they needed 167 to finish and Shaun scored 177, oh dear, that was definitely one of those oh **** moments! Porterhouses’ Mike Newbury finished two games and Yvonne Rouffignac did well in her singles against Joe Miller. A well deserved win by the Hyenas! Alehouse v Junction Jackals 3-9 This was a closer match than the score suggests and the deciding factor was, as ever, finishing. The Jackals raced out to a comfortable 3 – 0 lead winning all the trebles in quick time. Back came the Alehouse with two good wins with Andre and Neil finishing well on D16 and Alan and Bernie repeating the feat in the next leg. However that was about as good as it got for the Alehouse. With the Jackals leading 4 – 2 at halftime the away side went on to take the single 5 – 1. The fact that the Jackals finished their legs on double 8,18,20,16 & 20 demonstrates that they took their chances early, shutting out the Alehouse players who had invariably got to a double at the same time. El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning found The Broncos with a bye and probably grateful to be sheltering from the fierce wind, however The Pintos being braver souls welcomed the visit of Vistabella Eagles. Although the bowls proved to be a rather tricky affair they were in good company and enjoyed the occasion, as I a rested player enjoyed the spectacle. It was also a good result, not as important as the company of course, but it’s always nice to win. The Pintos playing well to take all the points, well done all. Friday found The Mustangs playing away against Horadada Royals with a definite chill in the air and a fair breeze. Play on most rinks was pretty close, but towards the end the wind strengthened, ripping past the swimming pool and causing a little consternation to many. But in the end, with some nail biting finishes The Mustangs came away with 2 rinks and another drawn, always a good result away from home. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services).
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Concentration and Target Aiming There are basic human qualities needed to deal with winning and one is the ability to concentrate, particularly when the pressure is on and it is important that you understand how to concentrate because at these times you generally play too quickly and get it wrong or extend your time over the ball and duff it in the confusion. The ability to control concentration is a requirement for being a champion and it has been said that champions are separated from others by the way they ’think’. Concentration and your target aiming ritual are very closely connected because following a target aiming routine gives the mind something to do at a time when nerves could impede your normal routine. At this time you need to think about something but at the same time make your thought routine short because without pressure, you can mentally follow all of your swing movements but when the pressure is on it is almost impossible to do this and so a few thoughts only should be used at these times. You must practise the method, which pressure dictates because it is no good practising a method, which can only survive on the practise ground. Once you have decided on the line and length of your shot, you should select a target point (a point at the back of the hole when putting or a tree, etc in the distance) because it is ’impossible’ to line up to an area. From the back of the ball, in line with the target, you should find a mark a few inches in front of the ball and take your address position by squaring up to this mark and then look at the ball. The next thing is to breathe out and start the swing, remembering one thought on the back swing and one on the down swing. Not until the whole routine has been completed should you leave your ‘personal bubble’ and – with the smile of satisfaction from ’getting it right’. Remember the target aiming routine: Composure – Relaxation – (time as needed) Mental Rehearsal – (time always the same) Concentration Steps and Swing – (time always the same)

Higon brace maintains Torry unbeaten run This emphatic victory was sweet revenge for the drubbing Torry received at local rivals Novelda back in September. A lot has changed since then, for the better I might add, as Torry have now reached the impressive figure of 11 games unbeaten. During early exchanges, it was the visitors who looked the more likely victors, but Torry are now nobodies push overs, and they well and truly deserved these 3 points. Pedreno made 2 unenforced changes from last weeks draw at Muro. Rafa was preferred to Prieto up front, whilst the unlucky Sanchez gave way to free from suspension captain Burguillos. A defensive howler by Martin gifted Joseto, who thankfully completely miskicked, for an open goal opportunity should have given Novelda the lead after only 9 mins. In my opinion, Torry's turning point this season was the signing of Suarez, and it was the midfield dynamo who struck a fierce free kick on 15 mins, which keeper Alberto did well to punch clear. Lewis did well to dribble past Alberto on 28 mins, but although his shot was cleared off the line, he was ruled offside anyway. A minute later it was the turn of Torry keeper Miguel to earn his keep, when he brilliantly pulled off a brave close range double save from Pagen then Tobias. Suarez was instrumental in a trademark assist to Higon, who confidently curled his shot past Alberto just inside the far post, giving his team first blood on 33 mins. Only 3 mins had elapsed when Luis Carlos provided Higon a similar chance, which the skilful wing man accepted by dinking Alberto, then watching
CD Torrevieja ...............2 Novelda CF....................0 the ball trickle over the line. Higon could have had his hat trick on 41 mins, but unfortunately his shot hit the post, before Lewis headed the rebound straight into the keepers arms. Torry came out of the blocks in determined fashion, forcing 2 corners in quick succession early in the 2nd half, but Novelda fought back well. On 53 mins, a netbuster of a long range shot by Javi Sanchez was superbly punched to safety by the reliable Miguel, Torry subs in good spirits then on the hour mark, Nemesio struck another fierce drive which just cleared the cross bar. Back came Torry, this time it was full back
Vicente who put in an inch perfect cross to the lurking Higon, only for Alberto to bravely save his point blank effort. We all thought Novelda had pulled a goal back on 70 mins, but although sub Solano headed home from a free kick, an eagle eyed linesman spotted an offside infringement. An acute angled drive by Luis Carlos on 77 mins brought off another important save by Alberto, then 2 mins later Suarez struck a free kick which hit the bar before bouncing to safety, as Torry went in search of that 3rd goal. With time running out, Vicente provided another exquisite cross which Torry sub Prieto made a complete pigs ear of, as he embarrassingly miskicked with the goal at his mercy. In stoppage time, Miguel saved well, then up the other end, Higon had another effort well saved. Next week, Torry travel to local rivals Crevillente for another important div 3 fixture.
