No 605
Monday 15th - Sunday 21st February, 2016
Last year there was a change to the way in which the British National Health Service charged overseas visitors who needed to use their services. Hidden within those changes there was also an amendment to the way in which British pensioners and their dependents, who are resident in Spain & other EU countries, can access healthcare facilities in the UK. There was no great announcement of the changes and I certainly didn’t see any information released by either the British Embassy or the Consulate here in Spain. As
such there are no doubt many thousands of expats living in the area who simply don’t realise that they are still entitled to use the NHS if they choose to do so. In essence a British pensioner living in Spain, who is in receipt of a state pension, has his, or her, healthcare paid for from the UK, via a form called an S1. This form is registered with the INSS and the Spanish authorities then claim a fixed annual fee from the UK for that S1 holder. When travelling on holiday in Europe, but outside of Spain, the individual uses a special EHIC issued by the UK. Until April 2015, this EHIC would also be used when on holiday in the UK. A further 4 are from South America, from Argentina, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela with the final entry from Indonesia. He also expressed his satisfaction at the agreement with the Embassy of Cuba Choir 'Entrevoces' from Havana, directed by Digna Guerra as well as the Asian choir from Indonesia, which last year won first prize at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales.

Jamon or burger - what’s your poison? Jamon is one of several national obsessions in Spain. You can’t go far without coming across it, whether it’s hanging from a ceiling by its foot or being served up in deliciously in a tapa or a bocadillo perhaps or even some nicely cut slivers alongside a glass of vino – getting hungry yet? And then the WHO issued a health warning the other week that carcinogens were present in certain types of meat, including Spanish jamón, not good. However, Spaniards on the costa Blanca have taken the news that their treat could be as dangerous to their health as cigarettes, asbestos or even plutonium and dealt with it by basically ignoring it. As is common there seemed to be a general state of denial about the potential dangers of eating jamón with Spain as a whole accepting that, while processed meat is widely considered to be dangerous, the study wouldn't possibly include ham. Not their ham. The naturally cured in mountain air jamón from the carefully reared, free-range acorn fed pigs? But it did. However, the Costa Blanca’s jamón producers refused to believe the report and quickly dismissed the dangers of eating the meat stating that it was ridiculous to consider the jamón on the same class as a hamburger. And going on to point out that there was evidence following many studies that show the health benefits of jamón, even for pregnant women. In an industry worth €1.5 billion according to a 2014 report from the Spanish Jamon Serrano Foundation (FJSE) the response from the regions jamón specialists is hardly surprising and considering that Spaniards get through an estimated 5kgs of serrano ham each every
year, that’s without mentioning chorizo, morcilla, lomo and other pig products that form such a large part of the healthy Mediterranean. But still they live longer than anyone else in Europe… diet. And yet they have the highest life expectancy in the European Union. So who is right? As ever it is probably a case of everything in moderation and as far as we’re concerned here – well we’ll happily go along and eat like the natives and with a bit of luck live as long and as happily as they do!
Spaniard on ‘Death Row’ for 15 years granted new trial grainy film recorded by security cameras in which one of the suspects appears to be Ibar but, according to his lawyers, no DNA evidence was found at the scene to connect their client with the crime. It is not clear when Ibar’s new trial date will be set. According to news reports State prosecutors have a month to ask the Supreme Court for a review of the sentence. There are currently almost 3,000 inmates on death row in the USA.
The Florida Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a Spaniard who has been on death row for over 15 years after being convicted of the triple murders of nightclub owner Casimir “Butch Casey” Sucharski, and two models, Sharon Anderson and Marie Rogers, in Miramar, Florida in 1994 The Basque immigrant family of 44 year old Pablo Ibar, say that they were always confident that the Court would order a new trial for their son because of the amount of vindicatory evidence that has been gathered by his defense team. Six year ‘sickie’ for Spanish Civil Servant
Despite receiving an annual salary of €37,000, a Spanish civil servant has not been to work for over six years. The absence of Joaquin Garcia, supervisor of a waste water treatment plant in Cadiz, only came to light when the Deputy mayor turned up at his office to present him with a long service plaque. He has since been fined €27,000 by the courts after the award brought his long absence to light. The court heard that the boss of the water company had not seen Mr Garcia for years despite occupying an office directly opposite. The water company thought he was being supervised by the local authorities and vice versa. Mr Garcia says he was bullied due to his family's politics, and was sent to the water company to be out of the way. He found there was no work to do there. A family friend said that he was reluctant to report it as he had a family to provide for, and he was worried that at his age he would not get another job. Now aged 69 Mr Garcia has since retired.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
It’s the Wrong Kind of Sunshine! UK rail passengers vented their anger last week when they were told that strong sunlight was causing trains to be delayed in Lewisham. It seems that the angle of the sun at this time of the year causes difficulties for the driver being able to see. Frustrated rail passengers were unimpressed by the explanation, described by many as, “The weakest excuse ever”, following a catalogue of excuses from the UK train companies, which includes trains being cancelled or delayed due to “leaves on the line”, “sun causing tracks to buckle”, “snow on the track” and even the “wrong type of rain”. According to a spokesman for the train company, the morning glare made it impossible for drivers to see the full length of their train in their mirrors before leaving the station. Might I suggest that they employ a guard? Following an incident yesterday, I now have some sympathy with this excuse. In the Canary Islands we have sunshine throughout the year and the sun is rarely used as an excuse for closing things down, unless it gets too hot, of course. Even so, it seems It became impossible to see the road ahead
that the angle of the sun is also an issue for us here, with the sun’s glare making it difficult to drive at this time of the year. I was driving home through the Canarian town of Vecindario when I finally had to pull in and stop the car for some time, because the sun’s glare had become too strong for me to drive safely. Even though I was wearing sunglasses, and the car’s sun visor was down, it became impossible to see the road ahead. As it was a busy area, the safest thing to do was to stop and listen to some music until the angle of the sun had changed. It only caused a delay of a few minutes and so was not an issue of concern. However, as it was not an issue that I had faced before, I spoke to several friends who have experienced the same problem, and they agreed that this is something that they often have to deal with at this time of the year. I really must get a pair of polarising glasses from the Chinese Shop, which I assume will help to overcome the problem, and maybe these could be issued to train drivers too? I am also wondering how train drivers in Norway and Sweden cope with the winter sun there? So despite the amusement and anger that this issue has caused for the good people of Lewisham, I now have some sympathy with the predicament that the train company faced. Better to be safe than sorry! ADAPT star in local Carnival
For the San Pedro Carnival this year ADAPT played the role of Crusaders. Each year they are honoured to be invited by the Town Hall of San Pedro to take part in the Carnival. As the main focus of
the association is the integration of English speakers with the Spanish community this is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in Spanish customs. This year the theme was Crusaders and ever-willing
members braved the cold February weather to take part. Marching proudly and brandishing their weapons, they put on a fine display and were well practised with a fearsome drill and sword fighting amongst each other and occasionally with the crowds of onlookers who lined the streets all the way from the start to the port at Lo Pagan. When you consider that ADAPT Association is in the main made up of mostly retired participants then they are to be applauded that they were awarded 3rd Prize. Well Done ADAPT meetings take place in the Pensionista building next to Castelar College, Lo Pagan, on the first Saturday of the month at 10:30. New members welcome. CONFUSING FOR LA MARINA RESIDENTS Dear Editor I must respond to the letter last week from Ken Turner. I don't know if he is agreeing with Snr Martins or not, very confusing content. He seems to change his mind in mid stream I rather suspect he didn't really fully grasp what was being said. I do know he has written before on the subject of La Marina and appeared way off the mark with general perception of the council and the continued neglect of the urb. I have noticed since the residents association has been in existence the council appear to be doing things. Has the association spooked the council into doing what we pay for? I notice Mr Turner is trying another tactic in defence of the council by claiming other residents correct judgement of the council is political, he didn't use this in previous arguments so are we to conclude he is now having a dig at the non political activities of the recently formed residents association? What will he pull out of his hat next to get his name in the paper? Mr Turner calls for evidence of expenditure between the urb and the town of San Fulgencio, I myself have tried to get this, it is not available is the response I get from Snr Paulino. I also recall comments made by PiPN that none or very few councillors knew their budgets, this beggars belief. Perhaps a question Mr Turner should ask his friendly council is if there is any truth about the misappropriation of 190,000 euros of tax payers money by our current mayor and seek evidence that it is nothing but a false allegation. Has Mr Turner tried to get the "evidence" if so and he has it why not publish it? In my opinion, the words "ostrich" and "sand" spring to mind. Without wishing to be rude (I remember one letter about Mr Turners eye sight) I do think he would be better off taking a walk around the urb then consider carefully what he has seen before putting pen to paper again. Surely it is the council who should be defending their record not Mr Turner, why is he so opposed to getting our fair share
Monday 15th - Sunday 21st February, 2016 of the money spent on the urb, it is clear to see just by walking around the town of San Fulgencio where the money goes. Does he honestly believe in what he writes? I can only assume he has other motives behind his letters. I have no reason to doubt the facts given at the residents meeting last month and I was astonished to learn the amount of money (30,000 euros) being spent on flowers for the church in San Fulgencio, use some of that on the urb for weed killer! Justify that Mr Councillor or Mr Turner who ever believes they can. I will be in attendance at the meeting on the 24th February as I strongly believe the urbanisation is being unfairly, if not criminally neglected. There has been no worthwhile investment in the urbanisation for years. Ms. A Slade Calle Amsterdam.
IT'S ALL A LOAD OF POLITICS! Editor, Congratulations Sr. Martins for finally putting your finger on just what the serialised denigration of Urbanisation La Marina is really all about – Politics! I note that you have lived on the Urb. for ten years and would suggest that had you been here five years’ earlier you would really have witnessed inequality between San Fulgencio and the Urb, not to mention the alleged corruption. For starters, the Urb had no voice, unless you were Spanish and wished to travel to San Fulgencio to put your request/complaint in writing – in Spanish! – Not that it would have done you much good! Yes, the streets could be cleaner, yes somebody could go round with the weed killer a bit more often but are these really things to become apoplectic about? In my opinion, the words mountains and molehills spring to mind, after all, there’s nothing like a good old political bandwagon to get people all fired -up. To date, I have seen no published evidence to back up the claims about the alleged inequality, I’m sure that the facts about precisely where the money goes can be established without too much difficulty, so why not deal with the facts before going off half cock. Meanwhile, we now have an office in C/Madrid where complaints can be lodged in English and, if my experience is anything to go by, they will be dealt with in a civilised fashion. By all means call the Council to account and be

ever vigilant but, for heaven’s sake, please let’s keep a sense of perspective about things! Ken Turner
THE PP (POLITICAL PUPPET) Again it is left to Ken Turner to fight the councils fight, they can't be bothered but there again we on the urbanisation all ready know that. Mr Turner talks about providing the facts and evidence. May I remind readers this is the man who told us about "delighted" residents of Marina Oasis, factually incorrect. He told us we should be grateful that we don't have corrupt council officials, I'll say no more on that! Did he provide evidence about his beloved blue bollards (8 originally now 2, the council have demonstrated on this matter that they really dont care!), no. I do admire his thick skin though having had to face up to the "I'm all right Jack" and "Should have gone to Spec Savers" responses the last time he threw his weight behind the lame council governing the urbanisation. He was labelled in one letter as the puppet to the councils puppeteer and he is certainly living up to that tag once more. As he is so cosy with the council why does he not publish the evidence along with his letters? The answer is simple, the council don't have evidence to show how and where the money is spent (apart from 190,000 euros we know about). Did he not read the article from Samantha Hull where she highlighted that all but one councillor knew their budget? If they don't know or are hiding it what chance has Joe Public got of finding out? This council is facing another denouncia for it's suspect and dubious dealings over contracts for it's road sweeping and gardening services (yes you must remember when we had them, back in 2012 I think). It appears according to the Spanish press no contract has existed for 4 years yet the council have continued to pay 2.8 m euros in this time to a contractor. The 2.8m mountain certailny makes the 190,000 look like a mole hill. I'm sure Mr Turner through his friendly councillor would have known this though?I don't think the council will be too obliging if asked to provide the facts about that! I would not be at all surprised to see Sepp Blatter as the next Mayor of San Fulgencio! I look forward to the debate with Mr Turner on the 24th February at the MURA meeting where he can put his case forward for sitting on his hands and doing nothing other than let the council ride rough shot over the decent residents of the urbanisation. If things were as good as portrayed by Mr Turner then I doubt there would be a need for a residents association. I'm beginning to suspect Mr Turner may be running for council office in a few years time, heaven help us all! Emily Hunter and Gillian Carol.

San Fulgencio Opposition call for renegotiation of Waste Contract
Missing the point!
Dear Sir, Ken Turner has not at all heeded (or understood) what Sr. Martins said, and has totally missed the point. (deliberately???) Sr. Martins’ first paragraph
The opposition parties in San Fulgencio have asked the courts in Orihuela to clarify the legal position of the contract for refuse collection and waste disposal services in the town.
deny any illegality, stating that the law permits extensions to contracts if necessary. He added that what is happening in San Fulgencio with contracts is common in many other municipalities.
They allege that the contract to provide these services ended in March 2012. Since then, for almost four years, the Town Hall has maintained the service with the same company, Ginssa, without a formal contract, paying them a total of €2.8 million in the process.
A request from the opposition to the Mayor asking him to resolve the situation as quickly as possible has gone unanswered. Asked for a response, Joe Pilkington (PSOE councillor) said:
In addition, some services included in the original 10 year contract have been eliminated. Despite the lack of a contract and the reduced provision, the cost of the service has risen twice, in 2013 and 2015. At a meeting in early November 2011, the PP administration acknowledged the imminent termination of the contract. Nevertheless, on the 23 February 2012, they chose to ask Ginssa to continue providing the service as an emergency measure, under Article 127.1 of the Local Authority Service Regulations, ‘until a new adjudication’. In a letter in May 2013 to the fiscal authority in Elche, the Mayor, Carlos Ramiréz, blamed ‘technical difficulties’ for the situation. He continues to
‘The mayor’s default response to any criticism seems to be that other municipalities do the same. A curious argument and completely irrelevant. We in the opposition are not interested in what happens in other Town Halls, only in San Fulgencio. We do not deny that it is legal for a Mayor to make temporary provision to maintain services in an emergency – but this situation has continued for 46 months! That’s almost as long as the First World War. What has Señor Ramiréz been doing in that time? He has a duty to residents to obtain the best possible deal, the best value for their money. The tendering process for contracts is an essential tool in that process.’ Information provided by Len Allen

states that he agrees with all that has been said about the Urbanisation going downhill, and has witnessed a deterioration over the past ten years. What Sr. Martins then goes on to say about politics is, keep it out of the Residents’ Association, which is exactly what they aim to do. From what Mr. Turner has written previously, I am inclined to think he has a hidden agenda, or an “axe to grind”. Yours faithfully. Virginia Pilkington

All eight Specsavers Opticas stores in Spain have announced that they are getting behind this event and will be raising money and distributing information about the cause from 15th February until 15th March. The global optical brand have been inspired to support this important cause, after Martin Blake the Director of Specsavers Opticas in Mallorca came to the rescue of his brother-in-law and donated a kidney in March 2015. Martin bravely put himself forward as a donor and since the transplant his brother-in-law is responding very well. Throughout 2015 Martin and his team have been raising money for Kidney Research and to date have collected 1,300€ for this worthy cause. All the other stores were so impressed by his sacrifice and commitment, that they have also got behind Kidney Research and will all be raising money for the Spanish kidney research charity ALCER in the run up to World Kidney Day. Martin commented, “It was amazing to be able to save a life by becoming an organ donor and seeing the difference it has made to my brother-in-law’s life has been wonderful. However, we’re aware that on average a kidney transplant only lasts 10-15 years and then this cycle could start again if new treatments or cures haven’t been discovered. This is why I am now raising money to fund the research which will hopefully find the cure and stop the misery of dialysis, and waiting for a donor. I am delighted that the other seven Specsavers stores have joined me to fundraise and raise awareness of this low profile disease.” To find out more about World Kidney Day and how you can get involved visit www.worldkidneyday.org To support Kidney Research pop into your nearest Specsavers Opticas store and make a donation. Viva TV shape up for a record breaking year
It’s been a terrific last 12 months for local TV Company Viva TV with a record number of local projects, working on their first movie and travelling round Europe for both the Foreign Office and the European Powerlifting Federation. And 2016 is shaping up to be even better! Following the huge success of the EPF Powerlifting events and widespread acclamation of the production quality this month, in addition to extending their contract with the EPF, Viva TV were awarded the contract to provide live broadcast facilities for the International Powerlifting Federation championships worldwide. Dietmar Wolf from the IPF said “The International Olympic Committee are looking closely at powerlifting as a whole organization with a view to including the sport into the Olympics. A key part of the IOC scrutiny is how the sport is accessed and perceived by the public so it is vital that the broadcast of our events is top drawer.” He added “Having seen Viva TV’s coverage and involvement last year in our European events it is clear that they are the right company to help move the sport for-
ward worldwide” 2016 will see Viva TV travelling round the world covering all the IPF’s major championships which include events in Poland, Denmark, Texas and Orlando. Ralph Farquharson, Secretary General of the EPF said “Over the last 18months we have worked very closely with Richard Haywood and his team developing ideas to make the sport more attractive to sponsors and viewers and I couldn’t be happier that Viva TV have now become an integral part of the worldwide media team.” Richard added “As wonderful as this opportunity is for us we mustn’t forget that this is all about Powerlifting and about demonstrating to the IOC that this is a terrific all-inclusive sport for both men and women that encompasses all ages, sizes and physical abilities.” You can find out more about Powerlifting and Viva TV by checking out their websites www.powerlifting-ipf.com, www.europowerlifting.org and www.vivatv.es

Almoradi Mayor accused of using unmarked police car
The PP has accused the mayor of Almoradi of using an unmarked police patrol car to carry out many of his official journeys. They say that they have photographs of the car being used by Mayor Jaime Perez whilst engaged on council business. As a result, they claim that the Policia Local now have fewer resources after one of their cars had the labelling
removed so that it could be used elsewhere. The mayor, however, denies all of the allegations saying that they are absolute nonsense. The Partido Popular also criticised the government for auctioning off the previous official vehicle in December for just 13,333 euros when, only a couple of years earlier, it had cost the Ayuntamiento 72,800 euros.
Three detained in Torrevieja for Trafficking Two Spanish men and a 22 year old Russian woman have been detained in Torrevieja for selling drugs in the town. Guardia Officers had been watching them for several days as they moved from property to property. A spokesman said they were extremely well organised and their constant movement made it difficult for officers to keep track but after several days of surveillance they were eventually arrested and charged with a crime against public health and belonging to a criminal group.

GORDON GOODY DIES IN MOJÁCAR
Gordon Goody, the last of the Great Train Robbers, died surrounded by his friends in Mojácar, at the age of 86. One of the protagonists of Britain’s most famous robbery, he lived in Mojácar for many years. Everyone who had a chance to meet him emphasised his friendliness, his affection for his family, his friends and his many pets rescued from the street. A gentleman who, in spite of the difficult years that marked much of his early life, turned away from his former life and the image that those who do not know him might have. We will forever remember his smile and his generous nature that still was not enough to accommodate the large heart which was open to all who approached him.

Torrevieja Darts Ladies Organisation Ladies Pairs - The Ladies of the League gathered at the Breeze Bar, in Los Balconies, for the annual Ladies Pairs Competition, and what an excellent night it was. We had a Record number of entries for our Ladies League, and we completed all the games in good time. I have to confess, I did have contingency plans, just in case things were running late, but these were not needed. This is down to Jackie Tomkinson who helps with the admin side of things, and Gogarty’s Gals, who always help in every aspect of the League, especially marking, keeping Hot Dart Scores and so on. On behalf of the League, I thank you all for your help with the smooth running of the evening.

Thanks go to the Raffle organisers, the Black Dog Ladies and the Wildcats, which raised €66 towards the trophies for our Presentation Evening. Then thanks to our markers during the evening, and this is appreciated very sincerely by everyone, because without you the evening would not have gone quite as smoothly as it did. Unfortunately, I would rather not name you all, in case I forget someone, because you are all too precious to lose; but thank you. New Player Invitation Singles Event - As you know, our Ladies League Singles are being held on Tuesday 29th March. However, I am planning on including a Special event for New Players in the League, providing the players concerned are interested. Primarily, players will be invited to join in this event, but to ensure I do not
miss anyone out, if you are a new player to the League this Season, or a player that has never played before who joined last Season you could be eligible. So, if you are interested in this competition please speak with your Captain. The competition will run at the same time as the Ladies League Singles, at Los Montesinos on the 29th March. Finally, you will be pleased to know that one of our eldest members, Sheila Clements is now home from hospital and recovering well. Best wishes to you, we have been thinking of you Sheila. Once again, well done to you all, keep up the good work, and enjoy your darts. Pam Horton 96 571 0066. Ladies Darts Coordinator Email: Dartess501@gmail.com

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON Euronics Thursday Darts League Singles KO first round Euronics Darts League: Ladies Singles Knock-Out Competition, Qualifying Rounds - Semi-finalists: Sonia Cooper (Sporting Life Misfits), Yvonne Rouffignac (Porterhouse), Wendy Hayward (Junction Jaguars), Gail Todd (Junction Jaguars) Only thirteen ladies put themselves forward this year which was a bit disappointing as many a good thrower out there that shied away. Never-the-less those that entered gave good account of themselves and seem to enjoy the evening which was split across two adjacent venues: - the Ale House and the Hen’s Teeth in Villamartin Plaza. At the Ale house the first match was between Euronics’ own delightful Debbie Wright from the Pint Depot Queens against Sporting Life’s Sonia Cooper, a previous winner of the title and semi-finalist last year. Debbie scored 83 but Sonia was the stronger of the two taking the first leg with an 81, 134 and D9 finish. Debbie got leg number 2, also with a D9 but eventually Sonia got her D1 first in leg 3. The next match was between Gilly Kirby from Trade Wind’s and last year’s champion, Simone de Lacy. Despite scoring a 100, de Lacy couldn’t find her form or her finishes and Kirby went through 2:0 with D1 and then D2, seeing her through to the quarter finals. Yvonne ‘Roof-Rack’ Rouffignac then faced Patty ‘Poo’ Schofield in a match which was set to be a good’n as Roof-Rack was ladies champion in 2013/14 and Poo was semifinalist in 2014/15 and also had the honour of highest checkout in the league with a 158 combo. Alas despite some fine scoring 81, 81, 98 from Poo she was no match this time against Roof-Rack’s 80 and 3 x 100 and D4 finish twice- presumably a favourite of hers? Onto the quarter finals, Rachel Broadhead who’d secured a bye, faced Cooper for the first match and she scored well with 78 and 110 but an initially poor scoring Cooper finally found a 100 and a 91 and saw off the first two legs with D2 finishes to become a semi-finalist once again. In the second quarter finals, Kirby put up a good fight with 71, 79 and 74 but Roof-Rack’s 95, 100, 94 and 20, D10 finish for leg one and D5 finish for leg two secured her place into the next round and will be a tough act to beat. At the Hen’s Teeth, Leah Chesworth (Misfits) who has been a finalist for the past three years at least was first up and faced Lorraine Cox (Pint Depot Queens). Cox scored well with 61, 85 and 70 but couldn’t do enough against Chesworth’s 85, 81, 97, 79, 79, 125, 66 with D1 and D3 finishes…and she was carrying a tiny passenger too! Tracey ‘Psycho’ Simpson from Junction Jaguars then faced the diminutive Vi ‘the Viper’ Turner and the former scooped up 80 x 3, 70 and D1 and then 105, 120 D4 for a 2:1 victory. Simpson then went on to face Wendy Woo Hayward (Junction Jaguars) in the quarter finals. Hayward had secured her place courtesy of a bye and so the two Jaguars played her teammate but a fresh Hayward was the victor and now a semi-finalist with fine scoring and D1 and D16 finishes. Chesworth faced Gail Todd (Junction Jaguars) in the other

quarter final and both ladies clearly wanted to win. Chesworth chalked up 75, 84, 79, 81, 98, 83, 78 D2 which should surely have done the job but Todd came right back at her with 98, 60, 69, 85, 61, 115, 90, 66 and D4 and D2 finishes and finds herself in the semi-finals which will take place on 3rd March. Thank you to the host venues Ale House and Hen’s teeth for putting on some great grub and also to all those who helped with the chalking, especially Terry Kirby who did it on one leg, well he is a Pirate! Report by Simone de Lacy Euronics Darts League: Men’s Singles Knock-Out Competition, Qualifying Rounds With a last minute change of venue the men met at The Porterhouse to battle it out to take their place in this year’s semi final. Due to a no show and a last minute absence there were two byes in two of the first legs. This meant that Craig Miller and André Wing were automatically through to the quarters and had more time to spend at the bar! Bernie Whipday v Des Field with some very good scoring from Des meant Bernie was Whipped into shape! Mark Filer v Del Lister was an impressive game with Filer on true form taking him through to play Des Field. In the quarters, Des Field and Mark Filer fought a close game but Field won the evening and his entry to the singles semi’s. Some very good scoring on the night: Craig Miller 140, 100 and a 2 dart finish from 92! Des Field 2 x 100, 106, 120, 125, 2 x 140. Del Lister 123. Mark Filer 2 x 180, 7 x 100, and a 83 finish with 3 darts. Well done everybody and a big thanks to Tom at the Porterhouse for accommodating the last minute change of venue. Pint Depot also hosted this Men’s Singles KO with 7 men present there was one no show so Eddie Hirst took the bye. The might of Edmundas Klimonis took down Dick Hunt which meant Hirst played him in the quarters. Hirst was valiant in his efforts to win but it was in vain therefore leading the way for Edmundas to meet Sean Smith in the quarters. Alan Havelock beat Aroldas Klimonis and Billie Naylor v Sean Smith was won by Smith. Smith is through to the finals, well done Sean! High scores from Edmundas 3 x 100, 125 and 140. Sean Smith 6 x 100, Havelock 4 x 100, 111, Aroldas 2 x 100. El Capitan were fine hosts tonight for the Men’s Singles first round. Only one bye so George Caine took this. Den Hall v Graham Todd this leg went to Hall who was beaten by Caine in the quarters. Phil de Lacy was drawn against Karl from the Ale House who then went on to lose against Merv Harley. Harley beat Barry Schofield so the final leg was between Caine and Harley. Harley smashed it and joins the others in the finals. Some great scoring from; Harley 8 x
ways with a good win over Javea Green and this week away to La Marina. There were some good bowls played on both sides. we did however come away with a good win which keeps us in the top half of the table. We won on 3 rinks and narrowly lost on 2, winning the overall shot 87 - 70. SM 8 points LA 4. In the Fed Fours, Choctaws were at Greenlands winning 6 points to 2. Keep up the good work. In the Southern league, the Cougars played Country Bowls Geckos at Home, winning on 3 rinks and getting the overall shots by one shot!! 107 to 106. Well played by Meg, Mike B, Bill B 21-14: Bill M, Peter, Alan D 18-13: Jack, Bill R, Bob 22-14. 8 points to San Miguel, 6 points against.

100, 121 , 123, 125, 135 ,140, brilliant. Schofield 100, Todd 112, 165. Caine 3 x 100. Mallinson 2 x 100. Hall 2 x 100, 125 and 2 x 140. Well done everyone. At Masseys Bar unfortunately a couple of the singles entrants couldn´t make it on the night leaving just 5 very capable players vying for a place in the next round. The Hubs Joe Hawkins was first to the floor taking on El Capitan’s David Rotella demonstrating why these two players are in the top flight teams respectively! Joe set off like a train easily clinching the first leg clocking up a 125 and 2 x 100´s on the way but David showed great resilience coming back to level things up going out with tops and going on to win the first round with D9, even with a painful wrist! an excellent first game by both players! After getting a bye in the first round, Massey’s Peter Cliffe and The Junctions Andy Rutter stepped up to face each other in round 2 and even though Cliffe put in some great regular scores in the high 80´s & 90´s it proved to be no match for an on form Rutter who clocked up 100, 109 & 120 before nailing D5 & D20 to take both of his legs to cruise into the final. Hugh Galloway (The Junction) also had a bye in the first round and lined up against Rotella in what was, on paper, a very evenly placed match that could have gone either way but Galloway simply powered his way through both legs choosing tops as the checkout on both occasions and absolutely nailing it both times, taking him into a final showdown with team mate Rutter. Rutter proved to be absolutely on form and that just made the difference on the night with 3 100´s and two D20´s helping to lead him to a well deserved victory over a determined Galloway and taking him forward in the competition. The lads were joined by the rest of the travelling Massey’s team to spend the next 3 hours having a couple of friendly games and a good old drink!!! Well done to all players. Report thanks to Trevor Massey
The Jaguars were away to Emerald Isle Cavaliers coming away with 7 points. The shot difference was lost by only one shot, 96 to 97. The week started with The Pintos travelling to San Luis to play their Vulcans, the company as always good and we had great fun, despite one or two, myself included, struggling to master the mat. But it was a very good performance all round, coming away with 3 rinks is no mean achievement and the overall shot difference was the Vulcan’s by just 5, but one or two shots anywhere in the match can make that difference, it doesn’t come down to the last end. Meanwhile The Broncos were away to Quesada Diamonds, which is always a tough fixture and although they came away without a point, they came away with a good experience and are improving in play and confidence, greater days will come. On Friday The Mustangs played host to San Luis Tigers, it was a glorious morning with a stiff breeze calling for full concentration and no relaxing in those conditions. It was a good match with some close play on several rinks, but in the end The Mustangs won the rinks by 5 to 1 and the overall shots by an appreciable margin, a good result from good play. Henry Ryder, Dave Haynes and Richard Lee 25-10. Malc Elmore, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 18-12. Barbara Jones, Geoff Jones and Don Darby 13-24. Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie and Eddie Thomson 27-7. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services).
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Competition Nerves Many golfers find the ‘on stage’ part of their sport to be quite frightening and difficult to cope with and they find that the embarrassment of being watched interferes with their performance and more often than not reduces them to an ‘also ran’. Some people find that being watched is so difficult to come to terms with that they never actually play in competition and there are others who try their best but continued to practise ‘being nervous’ and never realise their ambitions. Many champions do not have these problems and actually enjoy performing in front of others and have the ability to imagine that they are alone when at the ‘work’ time of their sport within their ‘personal bubble’ – a place of total isolation. This isolation they find is a place free from all distraction with no noise interference, no eye distraction, and no negative feelings at all, just a place to get on with the job to be done in the pleasurable way and in controlled relaxation which makes performing a pleasure and more importantly makes performing easy. You must be alone inside your personal bubble for many obvious reasons and perhaps the most serious one is the influence of people you personally dislike and it seems to be a fact of life that there is always someone like this around and you can allow them to interfere with your play. You can also be distracted by close friends and relatives, often not allowing them to attend on competition day and this cannot be right, can it? So practise being inside your personal bubble by having something special to think about at the time you are ‘on stage’ and establish a target aiming ritual which is a series of concentration steps from the time you enter your bubble until the time you come out wearing the necessary smile of satisfaction which we all must use more often. Remember, composure comes prior to this ritual, then the mental rehearsal and target aiming. Game robbed of quality by high winds Following an impressive unbeaten run of 9 games, Torry visited La Llometa Stadium on Sunday afternoon, where they faced Muro. Although the hosts lay 3 places and 4 points below mid table Torry, they too were in the middle of a good run with just 1 defeat in their last 8 matches. Their manager Pepe Aroca had been retained from last season, when he took his team to a 6th place finish. Torry were not only without acting captain Burguillos (suspended), but club captain Jorge and Javi Selvas were also absent through injury. However, the omens were good for the visitors who recorded a 4-2 win on this ground last year while, back in late September, they recorded a first victory of the season against Muro, so a first double of the season was very much in their thoughts. Unfortunately the conditions didn’t make for attractive football however with the strong wind making it difficult for both sets of players. However it was Torry who got off to the better start when, in just the 3rd minute of the game, an audacious lob from Suarez on the half way line just nestled on top of the Muro netting.
ingful action of the half but even that did little to warm the cockles for those who had seen the good work of two hardworking sides, made void of any real quality, as the game was spoiled by a strong swirling wind.
Muro CF.........................0 CD Torrevieja ...............0 Chances were few and far between and it was not until the 25th minute that we saw the next real opportunity for Torry. Unfortunately with Higon through on goal and just the keeper to beat a late offside flag from assistant Canovas robbed the visitors of his opening effort. Sanchez was the next Torry player to go close when he tried to walk the ball into the net with options available on either side, a golden opportunity that would surely have put the visitors in front. A superb save by Miguel from Mario Real just prior to the interval was the last mean-
There was little improvement in the second period with few examples of creative football. On the occasions that Torry did string more than a couple of passes together the lack of awareness by both Prieto and Lewis generally undid any of the good work as they were both regularly guilty of straying offside. Chances for the dangerous Mario of Muro who forced Miguel into a couple of good saves while any sort of touch by Prieto to a low Raul cross in the final quarter would have secure the victory for the visitors. As it was a second consecutive stalemate for Torry as they extend their unbeaten run to double figures. Next Sunday a 12 noon kick off at the Vicente Garcia against local rivals Novelda.
Muro responded to the challenge and from a corner on the right Arnau lost his marker to meet Allan’s cross with a firm header that he put just wide of Miguel’s post. The honours were even and as the wind continued to lash itself to a fury the game was reduced rather to a semblance of serious football rather than the real thing.
