Final journey for Aircraft Carrier 'Prince of Asturias'

As the United Kingdom was welcoming it’s new flagship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, into its home port of Portsmouth on Wednesday, Surus Inversa, the company that owns the aircraft carrier "Príncipe de Asturias" (R-11), piloted out the Spanish Navy’s former flagship as it sadly embarked on it’s very final journey to Turkey where it will eventually be dismantled.

The trip is expected to take 20 days, according to the company which specialises in ship recycling, After leaving the Military Arsenal of Ferrol the ship will be towedacross the Mediterranean to Turkey.

As the country’s only aircraft carrier she was removed from the Official List of Ships of the Spanish Navy on December 13, 2013 when she became the victim of defence cuts, the Minister of Defence, Pedro Morenés, taking the decision to scrap the ship because of the economic situation of the country at the time, as its annual maintenance cost was said to be about 100 million euros per year.

The final scrapping will take place at the Turkish shipyard Leyal Deltas, in the port of Aliaga. The Madrid Company Surus Inversa purchased the ves-

Positive Outcome for Cabo Roig Businesses after Meeting with the Councillor for Street Cleaning

The meeting was organised by Pedro Mancebo of the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce

T

Also discussed were the illegal street traders who place their wares wherever they like, whereas the legal businesses are limited to certain small spaces that they need to pay the town hall for, in addition to all the other taxes that they pay.

Extra larger bins for waste and recycling will be brought from Orihuela to help cope with the huge increase of waste generated during the busy summer tourist season on the coast.

According to the Chamber of Commerce these hundreds of illegal traders do not have permission to trade in the streets, they don’t have proper invoices for their goods and don’t pay any taxes or social security and they unfairly damage legal businesses and traders from the Thursday and Saturday Stall Markets.

he local council will this By week give a deep clean to the public footpaths all Raymond Kearney along the Cabo Roig Strip. Also much needed small waste bins will be installed and provision will be made to empty them regularly.

These decisions were made at a meeting organised by Pedro Mancebo of the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce between Damaso Aparicio local councillor for street cleaning and waste collection and members of the “Cabo Roig Strip Business Association” and “O.C. Avanza Business and Entrepreneurs Association”. As a result of meetings held at the Chamber of Commerce in Orihuela with business owners in Cabo Roig, Pedro Mancebo organized an urgent meeting to discuss different issues affecting their businesses in Orihuela-Costa especially following warnings by the local police that glass and bottles could only be placed in bins up to 10pm. This new rule would have caused great difficulties for bars and restaurants because of the sheer volume of waste that would need to be stored inside the bars and restaurants for long periods of time causing safety, health and other risks and maybe even fines from the health department. During the meeting the town hall representatives assured the business owners that the town hall concerns were about kitchen waste and domestic rubbish only being placed in the bins between 9pm and midnight. The town hall made it clear that all recyclable materials such as glass and paper could be placed in the recycle containers at any time of day. In return the business owners said that they would dispose of glass and other waste in an effective and quiet manner to minimize the noise for neighbours. Damaso Aparicio and the waste collection manager for the area also highlighted the need for a deep cleaning in the whole of the Cabo Roig area, especially on “The Strip” where thousands of tourists and residents walk every day. The image of this area concerns the business owners as they endeavour to keep the area tidy. The town hall has promised to increase its efforts to keep the area property maintained. A campaign of deep cleaning of footpaths will occur every Monday and Friday until the end of the summer season. On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Pedro Mancebo pointed out that there are many other business areas in Orihuela Costa that need more attention from the Town Hall and he obtained the commitment from the councillor to address the problems everywhere. Future meetings will be held with business owners in different areas of Orihuela-Costa.

These illegal street vendors hugely affects the good image of Orihuela-Costa in front of tourists and residents so this problem has been highlighted by the chamber of commerce to the Tourism Department run by Sofia Alvarez. The Cabo Roig Strip and OC Avanza Business Associations have requested a greater police presence in Orihuela Costa at least during July and August. A local Chinese supermarket was also discussed because they do not flatten their cardboard boxes before putting them in the recycle bin and so they overflow the bins very quickly and leave no room for anybody else and they often use normal bins instead of the recycle ones. The meeting ended on a very positive note with everybody agreeing that next year a similar meeting could take place in the months before the busy summer season.

Playa Flamenca Promenade to host two free events this week

R

epresentatives of FAOC held a meeting with the Orihuela Councillor for Culture, Orihuela City, Council, Mar Ezcurra, recently together with the acting mayor and Councillor for Infrastructure, Juan Ignacio LópezBas. The purpose of the meeting was to convey the frustration of residents in the Orihuela Costa at the lack of cultural events held on the coast whilst we read of events being held in the city on an almost daily basis.

Blow for local charities as Casa la Pedrera heavily fined Andrew Atkinson Exclusive Charities across the Costa Blanca south areas have suffered a massive blow - as The Leader exclusively reveals that Flamenco shows will cease at the famous Grand Design house Casa la Pedrera. "We will not be staging anymore Flamenco Shows", owner of Casa la Pedrera Jenni Ray told me. Jenni and her husband Derick, who emigrated to Spain from London over a decade ago, have raised thousands of euros for charities. Summer Horse and Flamenco Shows have been an overwhelming success at the Torremendo, Orihuela, based home. Kevin McCloud from TV's Grand Design series arrived in Torremendo to film the design and building of Jenni and Derek's home, overlooking Lake Pedrera that became a huge tourist attraction. Elche Children's Home is just one charity that has benefited both financially and on a personal basis for the children over the last decade. Thousands of euros have gone into helping the funding to run Elche Children's Home from the staging of the Charity

Horse and Flamenco Shows at the venue. "We have been fined 10,000 euros for staging the Flamenco Shows. So we have decided that no more shows will be staged", said Jenni. "We have raised funds for many charities from staging the popular shows, namely for the Elche Children's Home," said Jenni. Down the years thousands attended the Summer Horse and Flamenco Shows, with the Jay Marwick Company of Dancers, Emma Tytherleigh, and Juan Cortex star performers - in aid of charities. The owners of the Grand Design house have also raised thousands of euros having staged Halloween, bonfire nights, Christmas Carols by Candlelight and Easter events. Emma Tytherleigh, equestrian artist, who starred in Fiesta Horse in recent years, played a leading role in Circus Vegas throughout Europe. Emma, currently in Nimes, France, training young Lustiano stallions, said: "Performing at Casa la Pedrera has always been exciting for me."

Double celebration at Alfonso’s Joseph was celebrating his 79th birthday

Members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion were out in force on Saturday evening at an informal gathering at Alfonso’s Restaurant in Playa Flamenca. What started in the week as a casual night out for half a dozen people quickly grew to an outing for almost 30 when members got wind of the meal at Thursday’s monthly general meeting. However the evening was rather more of an occasion for Joseph (Giuseppe) Pesce. Members were not aware, until the night, that Joseph was celebrating his 79th birthday so a gift was out of the question, until restaurant proprietor Penny was good enough to come to the rescue with a bottle of Cava while Cathy Carson led a serenade of ‘Happy Birthday’ to the celebrant. Also celebrating on the night were weekend guests of Carl and Nicola Louden, Steve and Emma from Reading in UK, the couple having announced their engagement only hours earlier.

FAOC said that there is a need to develop activities on the coast along the same lines as those in the rest of the municipality where even the small outlying villages are better treated. We agreed to develop a line of mutual collaboration, providing neighborhood ideas and initiatives; And meet periodically to assist in the preparation of future programs of leisure and cultural events on the coast. It is said that the meeting was very productive with an agreement to meet on a regular basis to develop a cultural promotion in the Orihuela Costa. Following the meeting the councillor released information

Region at one with Barcelona and Cambrils P

oliticians from across the region were joined by members of the public on Friday in recording their solidarity with the people of Barcelona and Cambrils following the attacks that took place earlier in the morning and on the previous afternoon. In Orihuela at 12 noon there was three minutes silence held at the doors of the Orihuela City and the Orihuela Costa Town Halls where councillors, consistory workers, residents, international residents and tourists, all participated in this symbolic gesture. The acting mayor, Juan Ignacio Lรณpez-Bas, expressed the support of the Orihuela City Council and all Oriolans to those who had been affected, as well as to the State Security Forces in their outstanding work that had been selflessly carried out during the previous few hours. "From Orihuela we send the message that we are with them all in these difficult times

for Catalonia and Spain," said Lรณpez-Bas. In Torrevieja the city flags were flying at halfmast as they too held three minutes silence at the doors of the Town Hall where the mayor, Jose Manuel Dolรณn showed his rejection "at the cowardly attacks" whilst sending the support of the city to those affected and their relatives. As in Orihuela the politicians and town hall staff were joined by residents and tourists in an act of solidarity. The mayor also took the opportunity to announce a number of new security measures that had been implemented along the Paseo Juan Aparicio so that "those who have come to rest and spend a few days in peace can do so with peace of mind "said the mayor. There were similar ceremonies held in San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Pilar de la Horadada, Guardamar, Almoradi and at the British Embassy in Madrid.

Almost 40% of all forest fires are intentional A report produced by the Generalitat's Forest Fire Operations Task Force (GOIIF), which has analysed the causes of 233 fires in Valencia, Alicante and Castellón, says that almost 40% of all forest fires in the Region are intentional A further 27.8% were caused by lightning and 21% were due to carelessness with the remaining 11.3% due to causes unknown. The group, which was created in 1994, is made up of 14 specialised environmental agents who advise on fire prevention but who are also responsible for investigating the causes of every forest fire in the Community. They also help to prepare the evidence that might be necessary in court where prosecutions are to be brought as a result of alleged arson. According to the Generalitat every single investigation generates an expert report on the cause of the fire with recommendations of how it can be prevented in the future and when the fires are due to human causes, reports are sent to the Attorney General's Office. Throughout this year 250 denuncias have been made by environmental agents, Civil Guard, Regional and Local Police, of which 31 already have resulted in a case being prepared for prosecution.

T

he Orihuela councillor for International Residents, Sofia Álvarez, together with Noelia Grao, the councillor for Health and Statistics, recently called local community leaders into the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, where they presented the new council publicity leaflet aimed at raising the awareness of local citizens to the importance of holding a current Padrón, the Municipal Census Document. They explained that by registering on the Padrón, individuals will actually be benefiting their community as the local council receives much of its funding depending on how many people are registered on the Padrón. The Padrón is also a good way for the Town Hall to know how many people are living in their area. So the number of residents registered on the Padrón controls the amount of funding allocated to the municipality, which will reflect on the amounts given to education, health care, security and other essential services, so the greater the number of registered personnel, the more and better services that an area receives. Those readers who might be amongst the 70,000 people living in Orihuela and on the Orihuela Costa who are not registered on the Padrón might bear this in mind when complaining about the inadequacy of local services, the only fault of which is their own! This point was reinforced by Grau who explained the situation in Entre Naranjos where the population has been calling for its own health centre for some time, not an unreasonable demand you might think. But on an Urbanisation with a population of 3000 people, where only 200 are actually registered on the Padrón, the council can

hardly be criticised for refusing their request. The councillor for health did say, however, that if the figure could be increased to 500, a small health centre would be established. A recently introduced rule now requires EU citizens to renew their Padrón every five years (Non EU citizens every two years). This will ensure that they will then remain on the electoral list for local and European elections, retain the right to social services and assistance, as well as to other Public Services, such as ambulances and SIP health cards. The INE, the National Statistics Institute of Spain, is the agency that keeps a central record of all such registrations, which it compares with those held by the Town Halls every October. At that time local registers are checked within each Municipality and those Padrón’s that have expired could be deleted. This will immediately remove the entitlement of the Padrón holder to other local services. So it actually seems quite simple, if your Padrón expires, which it will do at the five year point, you could well lose all your entitlements, including free healthcare, not an attractive proposition to the many thousands who regularly use the excellent Spanish service. On the other hand, if you don’t possess a Padrón, you are doing us all a great disservice, which you should rectify now by calling into the local office in your Town Hall where the matter can be quickly dealt with. All you will need to provide is something that proves you are still living at your address, for example a suma, electricity or water bill, and your padrón will be renewed, and this automatically renews your NIE as well. But in the meantime make sure that you pick up your copy of the new Government Pamphlet ‘Information for Citizens’, which is currently being distributed extensively in the local area.

The report says that almost 40% of all forest fires that occur in the Region are intentional.

Irish Fugitive arrested in Salou The National Police have arrested a 34 year old Irish fugitive (GH) in Salou (Tarragona), who had previously escaped from their custody at Malaga Airport. He was picked up under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Irish authorities for dealing in illicit arms and drug trafficking. GOES agents stormed a hotel room where he had booked in with a false identity last Saturday evening. The fugitive is also a suspect in the 2010 murder of gang boss Eamon 'The Don' Dunne, but cannot be named for legal reasons Investigations were initially focussed on the province of Malaga where the fugitive is said to have had links with the Kinahan family, a criminal gang of Irish origin with a presence on the Costa del Sol.

A surveillance team recognised him on his arrival on Spanish where he was in the company of his family at the airport but following his arrest, he overpowered the policemen and fled on foot, crossing several lanes of a motorway before managing to escape. A Spanish police spokesman, confirming the Costa Dorada hotel arrest and identifying the detainee only by his initials, said: 'Spanish National Police officers have arrested an Irishman born in 1982 on foot of a European Arrest warrant at his hotel in Salou near Tarragona. 'The warrant was issued by Irish authorities for illegal possession of firearms and drugs offences, relating to a search on the suspect's vehicle in 2013 in which Garda found two loaded guns and a quantity of cocaine. The fugitive is also a suspect in the 2010 murder of gang boss Eamon 'The Don' Dunne.

Clampdown of ‘mojiteros’ on Benidorm beaches

F

ollowing an appeal by members of Hosbec, shopkeepers and hoteliers, focussed on the number of illegal traders and mojiteros who were operating locally, the Policia Local in Benidorm have deployed more resources onto Levante Beach. Following incidents last Friday night where five policemen were injured following a confrontation with approximately twenty mojiteros (drinks vendors on the beaches), the councillor for security said that he will make all the necessary efforts to restore order and end the epidemic of these illegal drinks sales on the beaches. As a result, the situation on Saturday was very different as police reinforcements made their presence felt. Although there were a number of confrontations between

the security forces and the mojiteros, the presence of the police saw them vastly reduced in numbers. The presence of these illegal drinks sellers on the beaches is costing hoteliers and local bars a great deal of trade, as a result of which they have asked the City Council for a greater police presence "since it is the only way to dissuade them", they said. "This illegal activity affects us a lot as it translates into a loss of income,” said one local bar owner. “In addition, the attitude of these vendors is very aggressive. They have even tried to offer drinks to the customers we have sitting on our terraces. We are paying our taxes which they are not. As such it is the duty of the police to intervene.”

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The story of Nelson, a lost arm and the smelly cheese Many will have read stories and been taught about one of the UK’s national heroes, Horatio Nelson; that brave son of Norfolk who taught the Spanish a thing or two during his famous battles, his “mesmerising personality”, complicated love scandal and heroic death. The stories surrounding Nelson are, of course, based upon the British point of view. Are they true? How about looking at Nelson from the Spanish and Canarian perspective? About 220 years ago, Admiral Nelson of the British Royal Navy decided to attack Santa Cruz in Tenerife to help himself to some gold and silver collected by Spanish galleons from the Americas, but was humiliatingly and satisfyingly defeated by the local residents. I guess this part wasn't stressed too strongly during school history lessons, was it? The residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have long memories of their history and proudly re-enact an historical event each year on 25 July that reminds everyone of the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1797. This reenactment of this battle has taken place for many years in a variety of formats. Why was this battle so important to the people of Tenerife? In 1797 the British Royal Navy decided to attack the port of Cadiz in Southern Spain, but Spanish warships drove the British away. By chance, the British Navy heard that Spanish treasure convoys from America arrived regularly at Santa Cruz in Tenerife, and sent a flotil-

la of ships under the command of the recently promoted Admiral Nelson. This attack force had 4000 men, nine ships and 400 guns, but the military on Tenerife led by Lieutenant General Gutierrez only had 91 guns and a mixture of 1700 militia and sailors. This looked to be an overwhelming attack force with insufficient military to defend the port of Santa Cruz. Things did not work out as planned for Nelson, as the Tenerife commander was more experienced and particularly clever in managing his soldiers. Several British ships were sunk and many sailors were killed in this failed attack. This was also the battle when Admiral Nelson was shot in his right arm, and he had to be taken back to his ship where the ship surgeon amputated most of this arm with the help of some opium to lessen the pain in the middle of the battle. Many British militias became trapped on the shores of Tenerife with no escape possible. Although 30 Tenerife residents were killed and 40 were injured; 250 British militia were killed and 128 were wounded. The British asked for a truce and agreed to withdraw with an undertaking to do no further damage to the town or to make any more attacks on Tenerife or the Canary Islands. This was agreed by Lieutenant General Gutierrez, who also allowed the British to leave with their arms, but perhaps not Nelson. However, Admiral Nelson had lost so many ships that he did not have capacity to take all his militia back home, so the Tenerife General lent Nelson two Spanish schooners. This was a huge embarrassment for the British Navy and a resounding success for the militia of Tenerife in protecting their island. I doubt that much of this story has found its way into the National Curriculum syllabus, as it really does not show the British in a particularly good light. There are also some interesting facts that are linked to the Battle of Santa Cruz, such as what happened to Nelson’s right arm after it was amputated? It was thought that the arm was thrown overboard after the on-board operation, as was usual during this period, but it seems that some keen-eyed Tenerife resident found this floating in the sea or washed ashore, and eventually Nelson’s arm ended up interred within the altar of the Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This story has been challenged, but it has not been denied either!

The annual re enactment of the Battle Also, the honourable withdrawal and truce led to a courteous exchange of letters between Nelson and Gutierrez. Later, Nelson sent a large cheese to Gutierrez as a token of his gratitude, which was never eaten and is still on display at the Spanish Army Museum in Toledo in Peninsular Spain. Maybe the good General did not trust the British to send a cheese that wasn't poisoned No doubt the British will hope that people will forget the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797 and the humiliating defeat that the brave people of Tenerife achieved over the British Navy. However, the residents of Santa Cruz in Tenerife are determined never to forget this momentous day in their history. Many wear faithful reproductions of uniforms and weapons of this historical period in all its detail of the battle in July. Many might think that Tenerife residents would hate Admiral Nelson as he had planned to rob them and destroy their homes, but actually he became admired as he stuck to his word and the British Navy never returned to attack the Canary Islands. Indeed, there is one street in Santa Cruz that is named ‘Avenida Horacio Nelson’, which says a great deal about the island’s capacity for forgiveness, or is it amusement? Anyway, the Canary Islands still have Nelson’s arm in their possession, or maybe not, but it definitely has a smelly cheese as a result of this battle from long ago. Torrevieja mayor urges police to sanction bathers T

orrevieja’s mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon, said at a press conference on Wednesday that he has told the Local Police to discipline beach users who violate the ban on bathing when the red flag is displayed on municipal beaches. He said that he has issued the instruction "purely for the safety of bathers and for the lifeguards who watch the beaches. It's not a new order, it's just a reminder to the Local Police. " He has also instructed the Chief of the Local Police to enforce the system for sanctioning such individuals as he deems appropriate. Although it might seem rather insensitive, the police have been told, particularly where it is nec-

essary for rescues to be carried out, that they should continue to offer their support as might be necessary at the time, but once the rescue has been carried out and the safety of the individual has been assured, they should then identify the rescued individuals or groups and denounce them with a fine of between € 750.00 and € 1,500. Lifeguards are said to be angry that their lives are being put at risk by swimmers ignoring signs warning of dangerous currents. "Many people using the beaches simply have no understanding of surf or the dangers of rips and currents," said one lifeguard. “"I think that many people are leaving their brains behind when they come to the beach."

Human chain saves four bathers in Mar Menor

16 rescued from Guardamar Red Flag beaches in single day People in Guardamar are completely ignoring the red flags that have been flying all day on the town’s beaches. As a result, on just Tuesday morning, there had been 16 people pulled out of the sea by lifeguards. According to José Luis H. Oliva, the coordinator of beaches in the coastal municipality. "We must highlight the poor awareness of parents regarding their children because quite a number have been taken from the water this morning. Many of them are being completely irresponsible and but for the excellent work of the lifeguards there could well have been a number of fatalities.”

A group of bathers joined together to form a human chain yesterday, on the beach of the Amoladeras, next to the hotel Entremares in La Manga. They combined to assist four swimmers who could not get out of the water due to the strong currents and the powerful waves that were stopping them from getting back to the shore. At the time of the incident the yellow flag was flying although shortly afterwards it was replaced by red. Despite being urged to apply caution the four bathers decided that they would go into the sea during the early afternoon, but they quickly found themselves in difficulty less than 15 yards from

the shoreline due to the strength of the surface waves and the undercurrents dragguing them into the sea just below the surface. Fortunately, due to the quick thinking of a number of holidaymakers who were watching events unfold, and who quickly realised that the bathers were beginning to struggle, a group of about 20 quickly formed a human chain which they extended to reach the first swimmer. “Even though we were anchored to each other I could feel the strong currents pulling at the bottom half of my body,” said Sánchez. “I was very frightened so I’m sure that the four people in trouble must have been petrified.” Using the chain the swimmers were all able to make their way to the safety of the beach where they were able to recover from their ordeal although two of them did require medical attention. It was a difficult day on the Costa Calida and Mar Menor, with several rescues taking place and one death which occurred on the Veneziola beach, at the far end of La Manga del Mar Menor, where an 88-year-old woman died after being pulled out of the sea. According to a sources from the San Javier Emergencies and Civil Protection team, the lady was already unconscious when she was pulled out of the water and in spite of the attempts to resuscitate nothing could be done to save her life.

Red flags had been flying all morning on the Roqueta, Moncayo and Centro beaches where the lifeguards were completely over run. The councillor said “The red flags have been raised because of the force of the currents and the undercurrents that we have seen close to the shore, and that drag the bathers towards the bottom. The situation has been complicated today because the beach has been at 100% occupancy, the vast majority of users being holidaymakers.” By the end of the day the number of people rescued had risen to 28.

Arrest in Pilar de la Horadada for Property Scam T

he Civil Guard has arrested a man in Pilar de la Horadada for a series of scams related to the rental of holiday apartments as well as the fraudulent sale of a property. According to the Guardia, a 27-yearold Spanish national and resident of Pilar de la Horadada, received 35,200 euros from one victim and 500 euros from another. Agents were warned of a possible scam related to the sale of a home in Torre de la Horadada. The alleged seller had falsified the la nota simple del Registro de la Propiedad as well as the date and notarial data, so that the property appeared to be available for, when in fact it belonged to a German octogenarian who had been declared incapable and was in the care of the state.

The potential buyer inspected the property and agreed a price with the alleged fraudster of 85,000 euros for which he paid a deposit of 35,200. The Generalitat, which brought the initial case against the fraudster, said that the property is not for sale and the potential buyer has been cheated. As a result of their investigation, the Civil Guard found that the detainee was advertising properties on the internet under the name of "Pablo Mar SL" which gave it the appearance of a genuine real estate business. On its website it offered the rental of holiday apartments for the summer season in Pilar de la Horadada with an "exceptionally affordable prices, so as to gain the interest of potential renters". As a result a number of people had paid deposits on properties that

were not available and with no likelihood of their monies being returned. At the moment, the Civil Guard has only managed to locate one victim of the rental scam, a resident of Santomera (Murcia) who contacted the detainee in March this year and paid him 500 euros for a rental that never materialized. It is thought that more victims of this fictitious real estate company will be located as the investigation continues, although some people who have been identified have said they don’t wish to pursue charges. The alleged fraudster has been charged with crimes of fraud and the counterfeit of a public document. Having appeared in court last week he has now been released on bail.

Murder victim beaten to death as he begged for his life

A

court heard on Friday how Jose Maria Lifante Cartagena begged for his life as he was repeatedly beaten on the head by 35 year old Pedro Antonio with a solid metal bar, used to lift weights. As the blows rained down Cartagena cried out "I give you everything, I give you everything." Unfortunately these appear to be his last word as shortly after the beating he was found by a cousin lying dead in the small rural town of Macisvenda, a few kilometres north of Orihuela city. Cartagena, a 46 year old bachelor, who had recently undergone a successful operation for colon cancer, had a habit of taking a walk every evening before joining his mother for dinner. However in early December his mother never got to enjoy his company.

A

22-year-old British footballer died in the early hours of Tuesday after suffering an accident while driving her motorcycle on Calle Fernandez in the village of Santa Rosalía de Torre Pacheco. She was named as Amy Jo Thompson, from Belfast in N Ireland, who lived in the small hamlet of Meroños, and was a player with the successful Pinatar Féminas Football Club. A spokesperson said that her motorcycle went off the road and hit a street lamp. The impact with the lamp caused a traumatic head injury and although Amy was transferred by ambulance to the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca the doctors were unable to save her. She died shortly after her arrival in the hospital. Numerous clubs around the Region, both male and female, as well as the Murcia Football Federation, have published their messages of condolence on their social network pages for the young midfielder who was affectionately known as "guiri" who had only renewed her 12 month playing contract with Pinatar Féminas three days earlier on 11 August.

When he failed to appear she rang her nephew, Gines, who lived next door to her son, asking if he could find out why he was late for the evening meal. Having leaned out the window and seen Cartagena’s car, a silver-grey Audi A-3, parked in front the neighbouring garage, where he used to repair second-hand cars, Gines and his son walked across to the garage where they found his badly beaten body lying on the ground between two vehicles. Gines said that his head had been ‘caved in’ with one of the tools that he used to fix the cars that he bought, prior to selling them to on to private individuals. In pleading guilty to the charge of murder, Antonio, known locally as 'Torrente' and a well-known drug dealer in the area, told the judge that he was not able to explain the reasons why the pair started fighting. All he could remember was that he had spent the whole day drinking

and taking drugs and when he went to the house of 'El Cartagena' looking for cocaine, the pair of them ended up fighting after a disagreement. But he didn’t start hitting him with the bar until he was lying on the ground. The judge said that the beating had taken some considerable time as the garage walls and the floor were covered in blood. 'Torrente' also admitted taking cocaine and money from his victim, who was understood to be a small time drug dealer, which he said was then spent over the next week, in bars and gambling halls in the area. It is believed that Pedro Antonio will appear before the court in the coming days for sentencing.

During their stay at Pinatar Arena Bengaluru played games against UCAM CF, FC Cartagena and Baniyas SC.

Blarneystone Golf Society - La Serena For our August competition we travelled the short distance to La Serena, everyone agreed the course was in excellent condition and as always the staff at La Serena looked after us well. We played a pairs Texas scramble with the pairs being drawn from two seeded pots. There were several enforced last minute changes to the line-up but we got there in the end. One of the pairings came out with two opposing football fans, John Bryan (Everton) and Tony Jones (Liverpool) but they managed to work well together to finish in first place. On this occasion Merseyside won!! NTP hole 3 - Ken Farrow, hole 9 - Ken Farrow, hole 15 - Paul Moore, hole 17 - Lin Newberry, Longest Drive 18 - Mike Heighway 2nd place - 70.2 c/b Tony Brain and Dave Windsor 1st place - 70.0 John Bryan and Tony Jones Our next outing is on Thursday 21st September when we will play a singles stableford at Las Colinas. San Miguel Golf Society at La Serena

AWAY DAY - Friday 18th August saw 16 members travelling south to Torre Pacheco for their first of two away days due to El Plantio being closed for routine maintenance and staff holidays. While Torre Pacheco is not as long a course as El Plantio 9 hole course, it is certainly a very demanding one, with water obstacles featuring in many of the holes. Indeed, listening to after match chatter, the amount of golf balls lost totalled at least the Stableford score of the winning player - one player admitted to losing six balls. Nearest the Pins, Hole 4 - Not claimed, Hole 7 – George Stanhope. 3rd Place, Martin Rickman, Handicap 9 - 27 points. 2nd Place, Ian Henderson, Handicap 6 - 27 points on C/B. 1st Place, Lawrence Wanty, Handicap 8 - 33 points. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Las Ramblas Social Club By Mike Mahony It is deep regret that I have to inform you of the passing last Saturday of one of our oldest playing members John Robertson. Our sympathies go out to his family. On Monday we played “Change Partners” with the winning team of M. Chapman, Peter Wickham, Reg Akehurst and Albert coming in with a good score of 83 pts. 3 teams came in second all with 80pts. Wednesday we deviated from the usual Stableford Format and played with 5 Clubs and a Putter. Which certainly makes you think! Only

Twenty-six members were joined by guests from the Celts, whose home course La Serena is and who played as a nod to recently departed good friend to both societies, Shay Cunningham. Always a test due to its 16 holes with water, those setting up the course were kind enough to put tee boxes well forward for the men on most holes. This, along with a course in good condition, was one of the main reasons why some superb scores were posted. Phil de Lacy was the stand out, with 45 points, followed by Mick cook with 42 and a gross par round of 72. Mention should also go to Kyree Skarsmoen, Steve Higgins, Chris Hamblett and Mike Jordan who all beat their handicaps. At prize giving a special football card was undertaken, and will be continued next week, to raise funds for Shay’s wife’s chosen cancer charity. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were: Bronze Category: 3rd Mike Jordan (37), 2nd Chris

Hamblett (38), and 1st Kyree Skarsmoen with 40 points. Silver Category: 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (35 on CB), 2nd Bjorn Pettersson (36), and 1st Phil de Lacy with 45 points. Gold Category: 3rd Gerald Harwood (34), 2nd Steve Higgins (38), and 1st Mick Cook with 42 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to John Osborne (hole 3), Robin Eastman (9), Ken McPherson (15) and Mick Cook (17). The Abacus was won by Ralph Tilbrook. Our thanks go to the staff at La Serena for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Ruby’s Golf Society at El Plantio

The weather was good for golf with some cloud cover and although the course was not in pristine condition most of our players enjoyed the unusual format of Portuguese golf. With the help of this new format some good scores were recorded, but the shot of the day must go to one of our lady members Natalie Bramhall, who on the tricky hole 17, stroke index 1, chipped her ball which bounced all the way across the metal bridge reaching the fairway the other side for three, brilliant, unfortunately her next shot was not quite so spectacular, but that's golf !! The results for the captains day game were as follows, Nearest the pin on the par 3's were Nigel Wright and Walter Miller, nearest the pin in two,

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘The Rules of Golf’ Golf is no different to other sports and there is a need for rules and regulations to apply controls as different situations occur and to prevent misunderstandings and certain individuals taking an undue advantage. Unfortunately the book of rules published by the Royal and Ancient based at St Andrews in Scotland is both lengthy and complex. However playing golf here on the Costa’s there are certain situations which may arise during the course of a game of golf and it is important that you understand these rules to avoid conflict with your opponents or an infringement of the rules. Here are just a few of rules frequently in use: Preferred Lies Unless otherwise stated all courses on the Costa’s allow the use of preferred lies on fairways and closely mown areas such as fringes (not the rough or bunkers), to prevent course wear. You can lift, clean and place your ball within 6 inches of its original place BUT not nearer the hole. If you are in doubt as to whether you are entitled to a drop, ask your opponent and if then you are still unsure KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF THE BALL and play it as it lies. Unplayable Ball With the exception of a water hazard you can declare your ball unplayable at any time in exchange for a one shot penalty and your next shot can be played from one of the following positions: As close as possible to where you played your last shot from. Within two club lengths from the current position of the ball but no nearer the hole. As far back as you like but keeping the current position of the ball between you and the hole Remember that for b) and c) if you are in a bunker the ball must be dropped in the bunker. Coloured Posts There are a multitude of different coloured posts on the golf course which indicate different things as follows: White posts indicate OUT of BOUNDS and you must play again from the spot that you last played a shot at the cost of a one shot penalty. Blue posts here on the Costa’s usually indicate GROUND under REPAIR and you can take a FREE drop within one club length but not nearer the hole. Red posts indicate a lateral water hazard and you drop the ball within two club lengths of where the ball entered the hazard at the cost of one penalty shot. Yellow posts indicate a water hazard and you drop the ball either from where you played the previous shot or as far back as you like along the line that the ball went into the hazard at the cost of one

was Ray Batey, best front nine Dave Shelton, best back Dave Jones, in third place was Roger Clarke, second was Ray Batey and the winner for today was Michelle Evans. Back at the bar good food and good banter continued during the presentation with everyone winning a prize. The enjoyment continued with the captains night out, where we had dancing to live music a few drinks and general merriment, and where the vice captain when giving a vote of thanks made a monumental error thanking the captain with a "w" think about it, it will be some time before he lives that one down. All in all a great captains day enjoyed by all. To contact Ruby's Golf email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

The third round of the August mini-series was held on the stretch of the Segura behind Marjal camping, Guardamar. Temperatures were very high again and although there were plenty of fish around, persuading them to feed was not easy. Roy Dainty managed 3.36 kg of carp and mullet using corn fished over bread. Second was Steve Fell with 2.96 kg, including two goldfish, caught using maggots and bread. Third was Jackie Breslin (2.08 kg) and fourth Jeremy Fardoe (1.86 kg). Free Drops The local course rules specify relief WITHOUT PENALTY from obstacles such as paths, roads, sprinklers, animal scrapes, casual water, waste baskets, posts, etc. You must drop the ball within one club length but not nearer the hole. If you have to drop out of a bunker then there is a penalty of one shot and always remember that if you breach the rule the penalty is two shots. If you are in doubt as to whether you are entitled to a drop, ask your opponent and if then you are still unsure KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF THE BALL and play it as it lies. It is important that you understand these simple rules to avoid and conflict or confrontation with your opponent, which could lead to ill feeling and a loss of focus and concentration on your golf.

Just 24 members made the hour long journey along the A7 to Bonalba, although the Society was assembled 5 years ago we have never played at Bonalba. What a breath of fresh air to actually be “welcomed” to a course, upon arrival our buggies were all lined up with our names on ready to go, helpful staff in the caddy master and a special thank you to Richard Davies who made our visit so welcoming. The course was in excellent condition and as some of us who had played it before could remember just what a challenge it is. Our friendly marshal made sure that we began on time and was seen from time to time around the course, excellent organisation throughout and the round completed in just 4 hours 20 minutes! Bonalba will now be added to our frequent visit list of courses for our 2018 calendar. The results for today’s Stableford competition; N.T.P.’s Hole 4 K. Tucker, Holes 8 & 14 S. Adaland, Hole 11 D. Sullivan. Just €22 was contained in the 2’s pot and this was won by Mick Kennedy on the 14th our best guest was S. Adaland 36 points. Lower than usual numbers this week resulted in there being just 2 categories. Bronze category; 3rd place M. Mhyrvold 30 pts. 2nd H. Rong 32 pts on higher handicap and R. Nilsen in 1st place on lower handicap (32 pts.) Gold category; 3rd B. McMenamin 30 pts. 2nd M. Kennedy 33 pts. 1st C. Landaas 36 pts. Photo; Silver category winners. atience is a virtue, and so it has proven for Torry manager Pedreño. The wily old fox has refused to rush into assembling an almost total rebuilt of his squad, an understandable priority over arranging pre-season friendlies. Against near neighbours CD Montesinos at Nelson Mandela Stadium, they showed their fans glimpses of what to expect next season, when they embark on what will hopefully prove to be a successful season back in the Preferente Division. A minutes silence for the victims of the horrific Catalonia tragedy preceded the kick off. Ex Hercules and Alvira man Jorge Beltran had a short stint at Torry last season, but took only 12 mins before getting on the score sheet to add to the goal he notched up previously. In a real see-saw match, the visitors equalized on the half hour mark, before Manu Amores (enjoying his 3rd stint at the club) put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half time. As per normal, Pedreño elected to make wholesale 2nd half substitutions, allowing Montesinos to equalize on 47 then go ahead on 56 mins. Manu Amores enssured that his 62nd min equalizer gave the game a fair scoreline, this considering that his team mates are obviously lacking in match fitness. Torry line up - Mauro, Vicente, Mario, Zaragoza, Verdu, Ramiro, Manu Amores, Dani Salazar, Eric, Beltran, Santos. Next Saturday at Ikomer Stadium (check out website for ko time), Torry take on Horadada in their second warm up match for the new season. www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com
