Immoral Iberdrola charge sparks outcry
ortsmouth couple Kye and Tracey White knew they had a mammoth job on their hands when they decided to start a new life in Spain and bought a bank repossession terraced home which had been totally wrecked by vandals and squatters.

Continued From Page One Immoral Iberdrola Charge And one thing that has really upset them is the refusal of the electricity supply company Iberdrola to connect the house in Los Balcones, near Torrevieja, unless they fork out between 1,000 and 2,000 euros for a new electrical connection/meter box in the street for an entire group of five houses. Kye said: “Apparently the box is long out of date and new EU rules dictate that old ones have to be replaced. It’s fair enough to be asked to pay a contribution towards the cost, but to pay the entire bill is ridiculous. Iberdrola has us over a barrel, they are saying unless we pay the lot we get no electricity.” “The old box has no lock and anyone, including children could open it. Inside are live electric wires and it’s obviously dangerous. Iberdrola should have come along and done the work and, if necessary, bill all the affected home owners, not single us out to pay the lot simply because they have us over a barrel,” he added. Kye and Tracey, aged 34 and 40, have worked tirelessly putting the house into some sort of order, transforming the three bedroom two bathroom house into a home. They had to install a new bathroom and kitchen, put in new plumbing and electrics, all of which had been stripped out or wrecked, plus an entire redecoration. But they are still without electricity. As luck would have it the couple had one break. Their neighbours happened to be Rafael and Mary Restrepo. Rafael is the pastor of a local church, the International Christian Assembly. They quickly realised the couple were in big trouble with their new home and have been helping them for several months, providing them with water and cooking facilities. Rafael commented: “We hear of people getting into real problems when they buy in Spain but it’s now happened right on our doorstep. Iberdrola’s attitude
over this is immoral. We know that the electric box is old and needs replacing but we all should pay our fair share, not the unfortunate person who first goes to Iberdrola. They come along to fit all their new money-saving smart meters at their expense but not the boxes. Spain is not a third world country but sometimes people here are treated as if it is.” Kye and Tracey bought the house for 65,000 euros (about 50,000 pounds) through an estate agent which worked alongside a solicitor. They now suspect that the solicitor was working for the agent and not in the interests of the buyer. Although the bank gave an assurance that the property was being sold debt free, there was no disclosure that there would be additional unforeseen costs. There was no hint they would have to pay for a new electrical box and there was also no warning they would have to pay additional costs of water connection. Said Kye: “We contacted the water company and got men to install the meter which cost us a lot more money but when we turned the taps on there was no water. They hadn’t joined the interior pipe to the meter. We were then told we had to get someone in to do that ourselves.” "On top of that the solicitor told us we had to pay 350 euros to queue jump to get our NIE number so we could buy our home otherwise we would have to wait three months. That would have delayed our purchase." He added: “We feel we have been ripped off all the way and I am considering engaging another solicitor to investigate whether the estate agent, solicitor or bank have acted illegally in failing to fully disclose all these extra costs before we bought.” Rafael and Kye stressed how easy it is for people buying in Spain to end up paying far more to buy a house than they were expecting either by a deliberate non disclosure or by people led to believe a solicitor is acting for them while instead they are acting for the agent.
Reaching Out in Style When “Reach Out” Shop 2 put on a fashion show you can be sure it will be a great success and their recent show at the Marina Bar, Calle de las Rosas on Friday 18th May certainly lived up to expectations. With a group of dedicated volunteers , some of which were models the show delighted the many people there and show cased the quality and cheap prices on offer at the “Reach Out” charity shop in Calle dona Sinforosa. The rush to buy clothes was, as usual, similar to the January sales, with people eager to purchase the clothing and accessories available. Organisers of the show Lorraine and David Whitney once again proved to the crowd that fashion can be bought at bargain prices. Other stalls selling various goods attracted the people and with a raffle and Tombola the afternoon swung along without a hitch. The total raised for the charity during the afternoon amounted to 1021 Euros and 30 Cents and David and Lorraine of “Reach Out” shop 2 would like to thank all those people involved, who donated, ran a stall or helped in any way, and they would also like to say a big thank you to Rita, Dave and at the Marina Bar for their continued support and hard work.

Six bids to manage Orihuela Costa Beach Bars paid all outstanding invoices with the consistory and also with Costas for the use of the beach domain. She added, however, that the local administration is now considering claiming more money for the service that they provided between January and April of this year, when the company maintained two of its chiringuitos, but without a formal contract between them and the local administration.
A recent report states that all equipment used by Chiringuitos del Sol should be transferred to municipal ownership. ix companies have submitted bids for the management of the Orihuela Costa beach bars. Among them is Chiringuitos del Sol, the agency that has been running the bars for the last four or more years, the 2014 tender process for which is currently being investigated in the courts.

The situation with Chiringuitos del sol should not affect the new tendering process. The company provided a first class service during their period of managing the bars, which gradually improved year on year, as they added ever more facilities and provisions during their tenure.
The contract expired in November 2017 but neither the City Council contracts department nor Department of Beaches realised that fact until April 2018, when it controversially closed the facilities and ordered the cessation of activity. Since then the beaches have been without bar service, sunbeds, umbrellas or toilets. Now, BonĂŠ has asked the contracts section to see if they can claim the corresponding fee for those four months, but that is something that will not affect the new tendering process. She says that the City Council is trying to process the new contract at full speed taking into account the dates and the discomfort that exists among the users of the beaches for a current lack of beach services. However, the new contract could be introduced earlier than expected thanks to a recent report stating that all facilities and equipment previously used by Chiringuitos del Sol should be transferred to municipal ownership. She said that the Contracts Department has communicated with Chiringuitos del sol about the transfer of assets, and has given the company a period of 10 days to submit their response. According to sources, four of the companies that have made bids to manage the beach bars include Chiringuitos del sol, Sunrise, Magani and the Chiringuitos Piratas.

Is the Prime Minster about to fall on his sword?
It
seems that an increasing number of the country’s former senior politicians are ending their careers in institutions not of their choice, in prison, where last Thursday the High Court convicted 29 of them, including many within the ruling Partido Popular, former friends
and colleagues of Prime Minister Rajoy, to a total of 351 years behind bars, in the country’s biggest ever corruption scandal. They include former Party Treasurer Luis Bárcenas, who was personally chosen to fill the position in 2008 by Mr Rajoy himself. He was

sentenced to 33 years in jail for money laundering, bribery and other related offences Former Partido Popular health minister Ana Mato was found to have benefitted from the graft scheme, involving kickbacks in exchange for public contracts to businesses, and ordered to repay €28,000 while a former PP mayor of Majadahonda in the region of Madrid, Guillermo Ortega, was also sentenced to 38 years in prison. Judges ruled that the Partido Popular itself benefitted from the graft scheme ordering it to repay around €245,000, making it the first national political party in Spain to be reprimanded in such a case. The judgment also found solid evidence of the existence of a party slush fund. The mastermind behind the plot, businessman Francisco Correa, who was the Chairman of several companies very closely linked to the PP, was sentenced to 51 years in prison. It was said that his companies obtained privileges and inflated the prices of public contracts. The extra money was then shared among his
businesses as well as with members of the PP. And there seems to be no end in sight of the troubles for the Prime Minister as just last week, former minister Eduardo Zaplana was arrested as part of a new graft probe, and the finance ministry’s second-in-command, State Secretary for Finance José Enrique Fernández, is now also under investigation in another corruption case. Following Thursday’s verdicts the Socialist PSOE opposition announced a vote of no confidence against the prime minister with the backing of anti-establishment and left-wing parties, while Ciudadanos, which had supported Rajoy’s minority government until now, demanded that the PM calls a General Election. There now seems to be little or nothing can the PP can do to overcome the fall that has been precipitated by the Gürtel case and the political consequences that the opposition wants to extract from it. But in a televised statement on Friday, the prime minister ruled out calling early elections telling Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera, who wants a fresh ballot as soon as possible, that he plans to serve out his full term until 2020. However, many people feel that without Ciudadanos support he would seem to have little alternative.
New mental health facility opens on Mar Menor
The thefts were committed on request, with the stolen objects despatched to Morocco
The new Mar Menor mental health unit opened at the University Hospital Los Arcos del Mar Menor last Wednesday, when it’s doors opened for the first consultations with patients from ??San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares and Torre Pacheco, who will no longer have to travel to Cartagena to be treated.
Pilar de la Horadada’s Civil Guard has arrested six men (from Ukraine, Moldova, Morocco (2), Spain and China), all between the ages of 17 and 39 , for 21 cases of theft from houses, a crime of belonging to a criminal group and one of the receipt of stolen goods. Two of the alleged criminals were dedicated to stealing, by order of a third party, from houses in the same urbanization, for the later sale of the stolen property in Morocco.
The new centre will have a total of 18 staff
The Murcia Health Service calculates there will be about 7,000 patients in the coastal area who will benefit from its services. According to the association of mentally ill and family members of the Mar Menor region, Afemar, the main cause of psychiatric illnesses are schizophrenia in its different forms, followed by bipolar disorder, depression, personality disorders and split personality. With the opening of the new centre the proximity of consultations is "a great relief for the families, many of who do not have economic resources, since this type of disease usually limits the labour capacities of those affected and therefore their access to resources", according to the psychologist Raúl Sáez, director of the Afemar Day centre in the coastal area. The Los Arcos mental health unit will deal with consultations and group therapies, but the hospitalisation of acute cases and
Six arrested in Pilar for string of robberies
The Guardia began their operation at the beginning of the year following a series of robberies committed in several houses of the same urbanisation in the town. The agents focused the investigation on a group of young people, four of them barely 20 years of age, one of them under 17, all residents of El Pilar, who it was thought formed a well organised criminal group. emergency assistance will continue to be provided by the Santa Lucia hospital in Cartagena. "There is not enough of an affected population to have a hospitalisation unit in Los Arcos," explains area manager VIII of Health, Tomás Fernández, “although if there is a need for one in the future, it will be opened.” The new service, which will transfer 12,000 files from the Cartagena mental health centre, will have a total of 18 staff, composed of seven psychiatrists, four clinical psychologists, three mental health nurses, a social worker and three administrative assistants.
According to their investigations, one of them identified the objectives, always in houses in the same urbanisation, and by order. Two other members then carried out the robbery itself, forcing the doors or windows to access the interior. A third individual would then move the stolen goods to Morocco where they would be resold. During the searches of the homes of three of the detainees, several television sets, mobile phones, game consoles, games, fishing rods and watches were seized, relating to at least 21 robberies. The Civil Guard has now arrested six men who have appeared at the court of Instruction Court No. 2 of Orihuela, where two were detained in custody while the remainder were released on bail.

Pilar de la Horadada to spend 560,000 euro updating fifty playgrounds The Councilor for Works and Services, José Francisco Albaladejo, told a press conference last week that he now has the funding that will enable him to upgrade more than fifty children’s playgrounds in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada. Having carried out a recent assessment of their condition he said that a council team will refurbish twenty in the urban area, five in the Pinar de Campoverde, four in El Mojon, ten in Torre de La Horadada, six in Victoria Beach and five in Mil Palmeras, a total of fifty parks. In addition, the councillor said that work on the remodelling of del Parque 30 de Julio, and "that in Torre de la Horadada work has already begun on la Calle Fragata, another new park on Avenida de los Segundas and the restructuring of the park Ramón Antonio Escudero located in the Avenida de las Cofradías". There will also be a park for the disabled in Torre de la Horadada that was approved in the participatory budgets and new geronto gimnasia park in Pilar de la Horadada for those of advancing years. "The intention of the government team is that all spaces used as playgrounds for children and adults are in perfect condition for the use and enjoyment of all residents," said José Francisco Albaladejo.

Extreme caution required when using local beaches
he dangerous Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish has now spread south from the southern stretch of the La Mata beaches across Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada, with councils initially raising red flags prohibiting any bathing or swimming.
T
reopen their beaches.
In Orihuela Costa, swimming on La Caleta beach (Cabo Roig) was banned after two Portuguese caravels were seen last week. The councillor of beaches, Luisa Boné, said that the lifeguard service had raised the red flag as a matter of extreme caution.
It was decided to ask the local residents and tourists to avoid swimming on the beaches although they were not closed due to the lack of a lifeguard service.
The Department of Beaches also published notices on social networks warning those who plan to go to the beach to be careful and not to touch the jellyfish if they see them, as "their sting can be extremely dangerous." In Pilar de la Horadada the red flag was flying during the early part of last week on all municipal beaches due to the appearance of the jellyfish. The Department of the Environment decided to prohibit bathing across the whole of its coastline. They say that once the danger is gone, they will all
Guardamar del Segura was the first municipality to alert bathers of the danger. At the end of April, the City Council recorded at least six of the invertebrates and monitoring work was intensified on the Guardamarenco coast.
Local fishermen say that they have sighted several specimens, “but it is very difficult to close 11 kilometres of linear coastline as we have, although we were among the first to initiate warnings and ask people going to the beach to take extreme precautions and avoid bathing", said the mayor, José Luis Sáez. In recent days, although the jellyfish are still being spotted on many beaches, the warnings have been downgraded, with most playas now flying yellow warning, indicating a medium hazard, and jellyfish warning flags. The Torrevieja council said on its Facebook
page that fewer Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish are being spotted but there are now more Pelagias Noctiluca (the carnation of the sea) being reported which are equally as dangerous to humans. They say that it will still be necessary to taking extreme precautions, at least for the next few days.
Warning flags on Campoamor beach on Saturday afternoon
Both the Portuguese caravel and the Pelagias Noctiluca have extremely potent toxins with dangerous stings which could require attention ranging from treatment with antihistamines to hospital admission, depending on the individual. The tentacles can be 30 metres long and the most vulnerable to their stings are children, the elderly and people with heart problems. They can even cause death by anaphylactic shock or a severe allergic reaction, so all measures must be taken in order to avoid contact, even when they are stranded on the beach as their bite is still effective. They must be reported to lifeguards or to Civil Protection volunteers if seen.
Consell report leaves the door open to build on Cala Mosca Last year’s demonstrations seem to have had little effect with the Consell now opening the door for construction works on Cala Mosca
Within a month we should know the fate of the last kilometre of unconstructed land on the Orihuela in Cala Mosca after the Consell has accepted the modification of the Environmental Impact Statement submitted by the builder.
It seems that access roads must be diverted to ensure that vehicles are unable to enter the area where they could inflict damage on two protected species, the cat head plant ‘Helianthemum caput-felis’ and the snail ‘Tudorella sulcata’.
However, the Consell has imposed a series of conditions and changes that the promoter must make to the project in order to achieve a positive environmental impact. Sources suggest that these seem to be steps that the builder can correct within a reasonable length of time, because they are not as complex as could be expected, and now leaving the door open for the construction of 1,500 homes.
The report has caused a bitter taste among those who, for many years, have argued against a project that will fill the last virgin kilometer of coastline in Orihuela with concrete and brick. Although the environmental impact report prevents building on certain plots to protect the two endemic species, it is not the outcome that many wanted.
The modifications to the project should be viable long before the 5 years that the Pativel (Territorial Action Plan) gives to build houses in what is a privileged area, and before it is declared protected.
In addition, the Council must guarantee the availability of water resources to the potential population. Other constraints are to respect the 20 metre wide "Cañada del Mar" cattle track, provide public parking and upgrade the pedestrian-cyclist way.

Weekend lifeguards on Orihuela Costa Beaches
22 lifeguards, a coordinator and a Jet Ski, will monitor Orihuela Costa beaches at weekends
O
n Tuesday the councillor for Beaches, Luisa Boné, held a press conference at which she detailed the local situation regarding Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish. Four of the jellyfish had been detected since Sunday on the beaches at La Caleta and Cala Capitán and the jellyfish flags had been raised as a precaution. She said that the beaches would be monitored by members of Civil Protection until the problem had passed. Víctor Valverde, the Councillor for Emergencies, accompanied Luisa Boné, explaining that "in order to maintain security the staff from both departments will be working together as well as volunteers from Civil Protection. They will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. when they will carry out inspections both on land and in the sea. Boné added that the rescue and lifesaving service will be working on the beaches from last weekend,
26/27 May. "We will maintain this service every weekend until June 15, the start of the high season, after which they will be provided daily. The beaches will now be monitored by "22 lifeguards (2 per beach), a service coordinator and a lifeguard who will man the Jet Ski which will patrol the whole area. There will also be a dedicated ambulance for the beaches. The councillor then gave an update on the tendering situation for the Chiringuitos service, whose deadline for the submission of bids closed last Thursday, and for which a total of six companies have submitted bids. The contracts department prepared a report at the request of the Department of Beaches in which they state that bars, as toilets and sunbeds are owned by the municipality. They have communicated the detail of the report to the previous operator, Chiringuitos del Sol, giving them a period of ten working days to respond.

Coastal residents highlight garden waste dumped illegally at 60 locations Pictured here in Horizonte, Illegal dumping of green waste was recorded at 60 different locations
I
t seems that neither doubling the penalties for the dumping of illegal waste nor an increase in police surveillance have had any effect on preventing the dumping of illegal green waste in the area, which continues to blot the landscape of Orihuela Costa. As vegetation continues to fill many different streets of the Oriolan coast residents have reported up to 60 incidents in 12 different urbanisations, where garden waste continues to accumulate, even in parks and municipal gardens where trees have been cut and still remain many weeks after being felled. A few months ago the Department of Street Cleaning in Orihuela supposedly began a campaign to end an image that has blotted the Orihuela Costa landscape for far too long, but the result has fallen far short of
that desired, according to the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC), which accuses the councillor responsible, Dámaso Aparicio, for having completely failed the coast. They say that he has “empezado la casa por el tejado”, which translates as building the roof before the house. The FAOC has a complete dossier, thanks to the contributions of residents, with photographs of the different sites where there is an accumulation of pruning and vegetable remains which they say is giving a bad image of the municipality. The association describes as "zero" the actions undertaken by the councillor and criticises "municipal incompetence to provide an adequate service". Residents consider that both surveillance work and sanctions are necessary to overcome offenders
who seem to be happy to dump their garden waste anywhere, but they add that the root of the problem cannot be solved by those measures alone. FAOC spokesman, Tomás Moreno, says that the important thing is to establish an Eco park in the area. "While we are without such a park, gardening professionals will continue to have serious problems to get rid of their pruning. It is something that we have been requesting for 3 years, and it was in the electoral manifesto of the PP". In addition, the FAOC suggests increase the maximum volume of garden wasted that can be thrown away by a particular user (1 m3), as well as bringing in more pruning containers and increasing and publicising collection routes.

Later, when Jose Sauras joined PAPS, they rentedland on the outskirts of El Mirador, San Javier, where kennels were built and made into a large free run, which can be closed off into 4 separate sections for the dogs. The dogs only go into the kennels at night. A puppy run, and indoor hospital section were also built. They receive NO official funding, money being raised by donations, sponsorship, fund raising and, hopefully adoption fees. All the dogs on arrival are fully vaccinated, chipped, spayed
/neutered, and get their passports. As only a small concern, the shelter houses 40/50 dogs, some unfortunately will live their lives here, until age or illness takes them, with vets bills, food, toys and beds provided for their comfort from the above funds! Many dogs are adopted by other countries, which is costly and PAPS need volunteers for walking, cleaning and grooming, Wednesday/Fridays. There is a monthly pamper day for ears, eyes, and nails, clipping if necessary, flea/tick drops when necessary and worming every 3 months. Donations and funds are always needed, along with dry food and many other necessary items. Further information on our Facebook page Support abandoned dogs/PAPS Spain.. Please contact PAPS IF YOU CAN HELP IN ANY WAY, or for drop off points, adoption etc.

Torrevieja council cancel unauthorised Colors Party Hundreds of tickets are said to have been sold for a macrofiesta due to take place on 2 June in the area usually occupied by the Friday market, despite the fact that the council say they are not aware of receiving any application to hold the event.
Refunds will be made on Monday 28 May at the Noisse nightclub from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The event publicity says that the Torrevieja Colors Party will be held in the Torrevieja public market enclosure on Saturday 2 June, from 5pm in the afternoon to 1am in the morning. However, the Torrevieja authorities has no record of either application or the granting of permission. Neither does the gig appear in the cultural or festivities program, which usually includes private events if there is public collaboration, and even more worrying is the fact that there have already been hundreds of tickets sold for the festival. The Colors Party is the name of this macrofiesta, versions of which are regularly held in towns and cities across the province. They are especially popular among students who usually travel for some distances to attend the events. The councillor of Markets, Javier Manzanares (PSOE), explained that he was approached by the organisers of the macro party but he told them that any authorisation for the use of a public enclosure needed to be processed through the heritage department, which manages municipal assets.
Municipal sources say that they are not aware of a municipal file on the event while the mayor, José Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes) says that he does not want such events to be held in the city because they require extra public infrastructure and generate security problems. In addition, the scheduled date is one day after the weekly market, which takes place on Friday afternoon, and which requires a thorough following its completion. However on Friday the Torrevieja council formally denied their permission to hold the

over £1m VAT scam Father and son tax fugitives are finally behind bars after being captured in Spain and extradited to the UK. The £1 million VAT fraudster tried to avoid jail by fleeing to France in a light aircraft, while his accomplice father escaped by ferry before they both headed to Spain. Former Sandbanks resident Jamie Colwell, 51, has now begin his prison sentence of five years and three months for stealing almost £1 million in VAT repayments on new-build houses that never existed. His father, Brian Colwell, 76, of Bournemouth, will start his two year and eight month jail term. The pair were tracked down by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators and our overseas partners to a villa near Benidorm, where they were arrested by Guardia Civil officers on the evening of 9 May 2018. They were returned to the UK last Tuesday and immediately taken into custody overnight before appearing at Bournemouth Crown Court by video link on 24 May. The pair along with Jamie’s former partner Briony James, 45, of Salisbury had claimed to have spent £14 million building new houses, to fraudulently claim VAT repayments totalling £965,897, but a HMRC investigation revealed not a single brick had been laid.

Hundreds of tickets have been sold, they say, in announcing that refunds will be made on Monday 28 May at the Noisse nightclub from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. They say that because of the short time frame and their summer activities elsewhere they don’t have enough time, or an alternative date, on which to organise another.

Summer strike averted by Orihuela Bin Men Orihuela city council and the integrated unions in the company committee of Street Cleaning and the Collection of Urban Solid Waste have agreed on a series of investments and measures that will improve the working conditions of the workforce. In total, the consistory has allocated 249,800 euros to improve staff clothing, storage and refurbishment of the of the Puente Alto workshop site. The meeting was chaired by Human Resources councillor Rafael Almagro on Monday, together with representatives of the unions CCOO, UGT the Road Cleaning Company Committee and RSU. Unfortunately there was no sign of the councillor for Road Cleaning and RSU, DĂĄmaso Aparicio, who seems to find it difficult to work with Almagro. His absence was widely criticised by residents associations and the press. Discussion centred around the devastating report issued by the Labor
Conditions at the Puente Alto workshop site fail to meet minimum standards
and Social Security Inspectorate of Alicante, which two months ago warned that some of the municipal facilities that are used by the staff do not meet the minimum conditions of safety and hygiene. The report was issued in March and so far the council had done absolutely nothing to address the criticisms it made. This proved particularly frustrating to the workers, who stated that if this issue was not solved, they would carry out demonstrations, even proposing a strike to the service during the summer months. However this no longer seems likely as, according to municipal sources, both factions have agreed on a timetable and the implementation of a series of measures. During the meeting Cllr Almagro detailed a number of the additional investments that will be undertaken shortly in order to improve the service. He explained that in the next plenary a budget will be agreed for the acquisition of four refuse trucks costing 900,000 euros, made available through cash savings in other areas. He also said that 60,000-euro would be allocated for the purchase of a pressure washer as a result of the proposals presented in the Participatory Budgets and that it will go to the coast. In addition, a further 350,000 euros will be allocated for the purchase of rear and side loading containers. The councillor also recalled that two rental vans had been acquired recently for the transfer of workers to the coast, as well as a new contract for the vehicle repair service "that has considerably accelerated repairs".

Arson attack in Torrevieja city centre
Photo: Twitter@BomberosDipuALC According to police reports, two cars were deliberately set on fire in the early hours of Friday morning in la avenida de las Habaneras, one of which was full of paint and many other combustibles. Sources say that the situation could have turned to an absolute disaster but for the speedy intervention of city firefighters. The blaze was reported at about 2am, initially affecting two parked cars. Unfortunately it then extended to a number of additional vehicles, affecting also the first floor of the buildings and houses located next to where the cars were parked When the firefighters arrived at the scene on car was already totally engulfed in flames. This was followed by an explosion that was caused by the reaction of the aluminium along with other material present. After extinguishing the main fire, the bomberas were able to prevent the fire from reaching the fuel tank of a second vehicle as well as numerous cans of paint, all very flammable, which were stored on the rear seats and in the boot. The Civil Guard, which has also supported the firefighters by establishing a security perimeter and regulating traffic together with the Local Police, suspects that the incident arose though deliberate means because the origin of the fire and the characteristics of the fire are similar to those of others in the city in recent months. According to sources the fire is originally set by using fuel although the causes of Friday morning’s blaze are still to be determined.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
An Elderly Expat Dog
O
ne of the fine qualities that I greatly admire in British and other expats living in Spain, is their willingness to share their home with a stray dog or cat. Many newly arrived expats quickly recognise the plight of stray and unwanted animals in Spain. Unlike the UK, there are few animal shelters and animal welfare charities dedicated to caring for and rehoming unwanted dogs and cats. Over the years, the situation has improved, thanks in many ways to the dedication of expats who have taken it upon themselves to establish charities and to raise funds to support rehoming and education projects. For us, a bedraggled puppy that looked much like a fruit bat, burst into our lives fourteen years ago, following an announcement on a radio programme that I was involved in whilst working in the Costa Blanca. Bella, as she was named, quickly became a much-loved part of our family, sharing her new home with our loveable, yet stubborn corgi, Barney, and later with Mac, a house cat, who sat firmly at the top of the family chain of command. Over the years, Bella has become an intrinsic part of our expat
adventure and now lives with us in the Canary Islands. We are often told that, if we are fortunate, we live longer than our ancestors, which is why the age of retirement has been extended and why we are all now expected to work longer. However, with advancing years comes the health problems associated with ageing that our ancestors did not share. It is the same for animals too, and this is the stage that Bella has now entered. For many years, Bella has been a fit, healthy and lively dog, visiting the vet each year for her annual check-up and vaccinations. Over recent years, we have modified her diet to accommodate the ageing process. Last year, Bella lost her hearing, which did not seem to trouble her unduly. Although she could no longer respond to our voice commands, her sense of smell rapidly improved. Instead of listening and responding to voice commands, Bella simply followed our hand signals and seemed to sense what we wanted her to do. Several weeks ago, we noticed that Bella’s sight was also failing. She occasionally fell off the edge of a pavement when she was out for a walk or she would walk into a plant or a post. Inside the house, she behaved normally, even running up and down stairs without any problem at all. Our vet advised us to take Bella to a specialist, since the surgery was not equipped to deal with major eye
15
b y Bar rie Mahoney
issues and suggested that we take Bella to see a consultant at the University Veterinary Hospital, which is where vets are trained. The veterinary hospital will only see animals that have been referred to them by local vets, and they offer a limited number of appointments. Bella was seen by an ophthalmic specialist, accompanied by a number of final year veterinary students. It was impressive to listen to the clear diagnosis of Bella’s condition by the specialist and the depth of questioning and treatment suggestions from the final year students. As well as a thorough eye examination, Bella had an echogram, during which it was found that much of Bella’s condition was age related. However, an ulcer was found on her eye, which was causing her discomfort, and might require surgery. Due to Bella’s advancing years, this was the least preferred option. Over a period of the next four weeks, we administered antibiotics and pain relief drops into Bella’s eyes four times a day, as well as encouraging her to drink liquid medicine. This was not an easy process, which we dreaded as much as Bella. The snarling and growling when administering drops indicated just a little of the discomfort and anger that Bella was so forcibly expressing. Each time we returned to the veterinary hospital, there was an improvement. The specialist finally confirmed that the ulcer had healed and that Bella was no longer in any pain and would not require surgery. It was a huge relief and we are grateful for the care and specialist support that Bella has received. Sadly, Bella has lost nearly all of her eyesight with just a little peripheral vision remaining. However, as I write this, she is soundly asleep and snoring. Bella continues to be interested in all that is going on; she enjoys her food and eats well. She plays with some of her toys and enjoys a very short walk on a lead. Although we know that our time with Bella is limited, we are certainly going to make the most of the time that we have left with her.
Bella quickly became a much-loved part of our family

Based on real life events the show is set in a women’s jail, where a group of women are all awaiting trial for murder. There’s lots of black comedy, love stories, and wonderful characters including a flamboyant crooked lawyer, a corrupt jail warden who will do anything for “her girls”, a love-torn husband – and a few surprises! (in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs) trolled aggression. Take the positives from your round. No matter how badly you have played or scored on the day focus on something positive rather than negative from the round and take these with you to the next game as well as trying to work on the weaker parts of your game. You see it really is a simple and easy as that!
Smart Golf This article is not about your golfing attire and wearing cashmere sweaters and fancy trousers. We are talking here about how to think your way around the golf course using simple common sense. Too easy? I make no apologies for this because failing to take a common sense approach to golf can have a worse impact than a faulty swing technique. Here are just a few ways in which you can improve this part of your mental approach: Play the first tee shot in your head. When you are driving (carefully) to the course or before you leave the practise area, visualise and play the first tee shot in your mind over and over again because when your face this shot for real you will feel more confident and should see better results. Stick to your game plan. Before you commence play you should have a plan or strategy for each hole and stick to it irrespective of how you are playing, your score, how the opposition are playing or the state of the match. Do not turn one bad shot into two (or more). Golf is a game or mistakes, you will make them, accept them and do not try miracle shots to recover the situation, accept your punishment and get on with the game. Putting a good score together. When you find yourself in a position where you have a good score going do not get too defensive, trust your swing and stay aggressive. Use your shots. The handicapping system gives you shots because you need them so use them to the best of your ability and do not waste them by attacking pins tight to bunkers or hitting woods out of the rough to low index holes. Play the percentages. Do not attempt shots with a high risk of failure, simply get the ball back into play as safely as possible and get the best score that you can on the hole and get on with the rest of the game. Eliminate your disaster shots. Golf is not about how good your best shots are BUT is about how bad your bad shots are and so identify what these shots are and take lessons to eliminate them. Pay full attention. Each shot needs and deserves your full attention so do not play any shot unless you are ready to play the shot properly. Commit to the shot. Select the club that you feel is correct to play the shot, have no doubts about your selection, be positive and swing with confident con-

Marabu Golf Society at Bonalba on 24th May In assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Svs For this month’s meeting a group of 24 players visited the established course at Bonalba taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. There was a distinct threat of heavy rain on the way to the course but this burnt off ealy for a splendid day and the course was enjoyed by all and it is probably the greenest course we have played this year. Today was the “Whacker” trophy in memory of Shaun Dear. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Morten Kristensen – 38 points 2nd – Dave Bensley – 37 points 3rd – Mike Probert – 36 points 4th – Tony Robson – 32 points Nearest the Pins – Dave Bensley (2) and Graham Mason (2) Dog of a Day – Graham Hall Best Front Nine – Mick Hildebrand - 15 points Best Back Nine – Jim Bryce - 17 points Football Card – Chris Pinder After the game we returned to Leaf's Restaurant, which is located at Pueblo Brava, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Our next fixture is our Benidorm away trip on 3rd and 4th June 2018 followed by the society day at Alenda on 28th June 2018. Rubys Golf Society - Ivie Davies Memorial Vistabella hosted Ruby's golf society for this important day in our calendar. We played a Ryder cup format, where the captains team was pinched against the vice captains team, we also had buggy pairs, nearest the pins and some other challenges so the day was very busy. The course was tricky but played well and some very good scores were recorded. The results were; nearest the pins on the par 3's Bill Peters, Ray Batey, Bill Malcolm and Ian Allison. The best individual score was an outstanding 43 points from Ray Batey which will earn him a large handicap cut I am
sure, the two's pot was shared by Nigel Wright and Bill Peters. Best buggy score was Ray Batey and Nigel Wright, but the main event of the day was the team event, and although fairly close the Captains team took the honours and lifted the huge trophy which was kindly donated by Vistabella golf. After we had all replenished ourselves with a meal and a few drinks the presentation took place followed by an Auction which raised €300 for the cancer charity AECC. A great day sponsored by Vistabella golf and supported by Ruby's golf society in memory of our former member Ivie Davies.
Long trek to Altorreal to the lovely course in Murcia but it played hard for the majority of members, with a couple of exceptions the scoring was pretty low. It was dubbed the Billings and Smith show as most of the prizes went to these two golfers. In the Gold Category Andy Billings came in with 38 points to beat the Handicap Secretary Rodney Smith who scored 32 points into Second place. Andy guess what!! A big cut. He has already started to sharpen his knife. In third place was Liam Foley with 28 points. We will not see him again until September. In the Silver Category Graham Knight came in with 33 points after scoring just 7 points at Alicante Golf the previous Thursday, and losing his ball on the 18th Green, when a Seagull hopped down and carried it away. In Second Place was Harry McKinnon with 28 points and in Third place was Geoff Wild with 26 points Nearest The Pins: Hole 5 and17 Rodney Smith, Hole 8 and 11 Andy Billings. Longest Drive Rodney Smith, Best Guest Chris Johnson 33 points After the long journey down and back we returned to our home base to be greeted with Pie Chips and Peas supplied by Hughie and Laura, served by the handsome young waiter, Kevin and prepared by the young lady in the kitchen for which the Members showed their appreciation for. We then had the Presentation of prizes. The next game is at our home course Vistabella on June 12th with the first tee 08.15am Be there for 07.45am. Anyone who would like to join our friendly Society or play whist on holiday, we have clubs. Give Rocket Ron a ring on 678 849 142 or email sanmigron@gmail.com

San Luis Bowls Club By Sheila Cammack Congratulations to San Luis’ National Champions: Ian Kenyon Men’s Singles Champion & Ian Kenyon + Steve Simmons, Men’s Pairs Champions.
the annual “egg-cup” challenge. After 4 matches, 2 away, 2 at home the overall scores were: San Luis 15 rinks & 409 shots, La Siesta 7 rinks & 336 shots. Today’s last match at San Luis was followed by one of Kevin’s excellent BBQs. Hopefully everyone involved has enjoyed the challenge.
Obviously for the last two weeks, as far as many bowlers (players and spectators) were concerned, it has been all about the Linea Directa National It’s back to “work” as normal next week as the Lawn Bowls Championships played at Emerald leagues resume, let’s hope we can match these Isle. In the singles final, again it was a real nip & tuck game between Ian & Paul Parkes, with them matching each other’s play so well and the lead changing with almost every shot. Paul went into the lead but Ian kept fighting (keep calm & eat a banana) and pulled back with some excellent shots to take the title after 26 ends of play. Fortunately the spectators had enough energy to stand and applaud both players – although San Luis supporters were probably the loudest! We are so proud of our national champions. Whilst attention has been focused on the championships at Emerald Isle, members of San Luis & La Siesta having been taking part in

San Miguel Champions and Runners Up
For San Miguel the Nationals became a great showcase for the club’s bowlers. The Men’s Triples (Gary Raby, Johnny Raby and Brian Allen) had a wonderful semi-final picking up a hot shot against a strong Javea team. As mentioned last week 2 of our Ladies Triples teams had to face each other in the semis and Lynn Greenland, Ann Eagle and Gail willshire were able to proceed through. Unfortunately, however, both of our Triples came up against Quesada teams in the Finals and the blue shirts prevailed. The Ladies Pairs final was an all San Miguel affair with Gail Willshire & Lynn Greenland facing Val Collier & Ann Eagle. The match was close for about 13 ends after which Val and Ann were able to pull away, securing the win on the 17th end. Finally, the Ladies Singles was another all San Miguel affair with Mary Dyer taking on Ann
swung from one player to the other, then Ian was able to pick up 4 shots close to the end of the game, and despite some incredible bowls from Paul he was unable to save the day, and Ian went on to take the title. Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes reached the quarter finals of the ladies pairs. Unfortunately one had to lose after we had been privileged to watch an incredible display of bowling. Peta went on to play the semi finals against Mary Dyer, who went on to became the ladies singles champion. Peta and Carol were also the semi finalists in the ladies pairs. What has been very obvious during this Nationals competition is the tremendous camaraderie which has been evident among the Quesada players taking part, with people turning up every day to support their fellow players. Finally, and this has been expressed by all of the players, a big, big thank you to all of you who turned up at Emerald Isle to give your support - it was wonderful to hear the cheers of support coming from the sidelines.

Its been a successful competition for Quesada Bowls Club. Whilst this Nationals competition hasn’t had the largest of entries, all of the players taking part acknowledged that it’s been one of the strongest and most competitive event with some incredible bowling at a very high level. Ladies Triples Champions - Congratulations to QBC’s Melanie Highland, Deidre Leeming and Jacqui Johnston taking the ladies triples championship with a convincing win over a very strong ladies team from San Miguel. Men's Triples Champions - Congratulations to QBC’s Terry Morgan, Peter Morgan & Paul Parkes taking the men's triples title with a very convincing win over a strong team from San Miguel. The Club Champion and Champion of Champions winner was determined to add another title to her haul and really had her game head on, ensuring she took the gold medal. So, in summary, San Miguel had 10 semi-finalists and representatives in every 2018 Nationals final except one, and we should be very proud of our club. Well done to all those who took part. If you are thinking of taking up bowls, why not come to Wasps on Wednesdays 1pm for 1:30 start. €5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and woods available to borrow. Linea Dírecta Nationals brings success for local clubs
The
2018 Línea Directa Spanish Nationals came to a close on 24th after 9 days of glorious weather and superb bowling.
The Mens Triples final was between Brian Allen, Johnny & Gary Raby of San Miguel against Terry Morgan, Peter Morgan & Paul Parkes of Quesada. On this occasion the San Miguel trio failed to find their form from previous rounds while the Quesada trio maintained their form to take the title. In the Ladies Triples final it was again San Miguel (Gail Willshire, Ann Eagle & Lynn Greenland) against Quesada (Mel Highland, Deidre Leeming & Jacqui Johnston). As in the Mens final the San Miguel trio did not bowl to their usual form and the Quesada trio took the title after 16 ends. At the same time the Mens Pairs final was taking place. This was San Luis (Steve Simmons & Ian Kenyon) against the home pair of Pat Heaney & John Rimmer. This was a really close match and after 13 ends the Emerald Isle pair led 11-10. San Luis picked up 6 shots over the next 3 ends to lead by 5 and despite dropping single shots on the last 2 ends San Luis held on to win. The following day we started with the Ladies Pairs final which was an all San Miguel final. The 3 ladies from the triples were playing. Last years Champions Gail Willshire & Lynn Greenland taking on Val Collier & Ann Eagle. After 9 ends Val & Ann led by just a single shot. After 13 ends it was again just the single shot difference in favour of Val & Ann. They then picked up 9 shots over the next 4 ends to seal their win. Onto the 2 Premier events, the Ladies and Mens Singles. The Ladies final was again an all San Miguel final. Mary Dyer (this
years Champion of Champions Ladies Singles Champion) taking on past winner Ann Allen.
National Singles Champions, Ian Kenyon and Mary Dyer
Mary got into her stride straight away and never let up the pressure. She took the title after 15 ends to complete the double – will she be able to do the treble with the Valencians in September? The Mens Singles final was an all blue affair with Paul Parkes (Quesada) taking on Ian Kenyon (San Luis). With both players having won a title the day before they were both in fine form and on a high. After 7 ends the score was 5 each. After 14 ends they were 9 all – just 18 shots scored in the 14 ends, showing how close the match was. Ian then took a 3 shot lead only for Paul to come back to take a 2 shot lead after 21 ends. Ian however then won the next 4 ends to take the title. It was a great game to watch and played in the best spirit. Following the finals the Presentation of the medals was held. Bob Donnelly thanked the Emerald Isle for giving up their green for the period of the tournament. He thanked the caterers for providing the after competition buffet for all finalists and officials. The 2 coordinators were presented with a gift of the favourite tipple for their sterling work. The umpires, markers and board turners were also thanked. Linea Directa and Avalon were also thanked for sponsoring the event, The Leader Newspaper for producing the programme and finally Bob thanked Competition Secretary Suzi Cooper for her work before and during the event, presenting her with a large box of chocolates. With all the thank you’s done the Spanish anthem was played and the national flag was lowered to close the 24th edition of this prestigious event.

SITE OF NEXT MONTH’s U.S. OPEN, and situated on the millionaires holiday paradise of Long Island, N.Y., Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was constructed in 1891 with the help of the local Shinnecock Indians, and it’s clubhouse was allegedly the first to be constructed in America. It was one of the founding members of the USGA, and hosted the 2nd U.S. Open in 1896, being also the first golf club in America to admit ladies.
Shinnecock Hills clubhouse was allegedly the first to be constructed in America. The superb course is said to test golfers’ ability to the utmost, with constantly changing wind direction, and requires every club in the bag. Unfortunately ownership of the land is still hotly contested by the Shinnecock Indians, who reckon they were cheated out of it, so players this year should watch out, as the spectators coming over the hill could be waving bows and arrows. SPEAKING OF STIRRING up the natives, Donald Trump will be lucky to escape a claymore up his kilt the next time he travels to Scotland after banning the brightly coIoured Irn-Bru from his Turnberry resort because the nation’s 2nd favourite drink apparently ‘stains the carpets.’

Unsurprisingly, this led to the less mobile of the membership taking longer to complete the course. The famous undulating greens were, as ever, in great condition. Given the trickiness of reading curvaceous putting surfaces five twos were recorded on the par 3’s. Notably Robin Eastman, holing out a 60 foot putt on the 11th. Despite the former twos, scoring was a tad on the low side with only four players breaking par. Hugh Reilly topped the scoring with 39 points
although he almost forgot to hand in his card. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Norman McBride (32), 3rd Keith Stevenson (33), 2nd Chris Hamblett (33), and 1st Charlie Harkin (37). Silver Category: 4th Gerald Bannon (32), 3rd Steve Belshaw (33 on CB), 2nd Norman Cahill (33 on CB) and 1st Hugh Reilly (39). Gold Category: 4th Eva Petersson (34 on CB ), 3rd John Osborne (36), 2nd Robin Eastman (37 on CB) and 1st Theo Boelhouwer (37 on CB). Nearest the pins on the par 3’s went to Mick Seymour, Alan Hill, John Osborne, Noel Bannon. Prizes were presented to the winners by the prize sponsor, Ron Stenhouse, of Stenhouse Flooring.

ARNOLD PALMER’S ONLY U.S. Open victory came in 1960 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. He was thought to be out of contention, commencing the final round 7 strokes behind the leader, but he drove the green on the 346-yard first hole setting up an opening birdie. Arnie shot 65, at that time the lowest round in U.S. Open history, and scored a two-shot victory over an amateur named Jack Nicklaus. His driver is still on view at the club. THE SHOT CLOCK MASTERS (June 7-10th) in Austria will be the first tournament in professional golf to use a shot clock on every shot as part of the European Tour’s Pace of Play policy, introduced last year. Each player in the 120-man field will have 50 seconds for the first in a group to play any given shot, 40 seconds for subsequent players. A one-shot penalty will be imposed for each transgression, and will be shown as a red card against the player’s name on the leaderboard. Each player can call two ‘time-outs’ per round which permit twice the allotted shot time. Another new event on the European Tour, the ‘Belgian Knockout’ was hosted by Ryder Cup star rookie Thomas Pieters and held at Rinkven Golf Club, Antwerp, on 17th May. Part of the Race to Dubai, and combining aspects of match and stroke play, the four-day event culminated in a two-man battle over nine holes. European Tour CEO Keith Pelley, fresh from Golf Sixes success, said: “This brand new format expanding the definition of tournament golf is further evidence of our desire to embrace innovation.” No-one could accuse Mr. Pelley of not embracing innovation. THE LATEST CLIMATE REPORT suggests that higher sea levels could see all of Britain's historical links courses washed away by 2100. Coastal erosion, rising sea levels and more extreme weather means we will see 'golf courses crumbling into the sea.’ Oh well, by 2100 they will probably have found a way to solve the problem, and anyway us oldies will be playing on a perfect course by then. Heavenly, in fact. SPEAKING OF HEAVEN, A pro golfer died and was met at the Pearly Gates. “We’re not quite sure what to do with you,” St. Peter said. “Did you actually do anything that was for the common good?” The golfer pondered for a bit and said, “Once in a hotel parking lot I saw a young woman being tormented by some Hell’s Angels —revving their engines, circling her and calling obscenities. So I got out of my car and went up to the leader. He was much bigger than me, very muscular and covered with tattoos. Well, I bonked this guy on the nose with my 5 iron and I told him and the rest of them they’d better stop bothering this woman or they would get more of the same!” “Wow, that’s very impressive,” St. Peter replied. “When did this happen?” “About five minutes ago,” the golfer replied. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.

Claptons Club at Bonalba Here we are for our first visit to Bonalba Golf this year. Weather was fine and bright and the sun had already reared its head as we started off on a 10am tee. Since we last came there have been improvements to the course which can only benefit all golfers. The greens were in good condition and running fairly true but not always as true as everybody would like. We had one unfortunate instance where one of our players hit a duck with his golf ball as it strayed off the shank from the tee killing the poor bird instantly. We journeyed back to The Club in Quesada and our thanks for a splendid buffet to Ian and his team. The cards having been sorted the results are below: Overall Winner: Kevin Williams 32 points Gold Winner: Andy Trefry 30 points Gold Runner Up: Brent Hollings 29 points Silver Winner: John Dodds 31 points Silver Runner Up: Ken Pugh 24 points Best Guest: Gordon Chapman 25 points Best Front Nine: Rick Drake 12 pts on c/b Best Back Nine: Eddie Scott 15 pts on c/b Nearest the Pins: 4th Brent Hollings: 8th Dave Nicholls: 11th & 14th Gordon Chapman. Twos: Gordon Chapman. Football Card: Gordon Chapman. As you can see from the above our guest Gordon Chapman scooped all the prizes he could get so many congratulations. Our next match is the 15th June at Font del Llop

Horadada Promoted after penalty shoot-out O
ver a thousand people were packed into the Ikomar stadium last Sunday as UD Horadada looked to finish their league campaign with promotion.
Trailing Campo San Gregorio de Torrent, from Valencia, by a single goal, they had by far the better of the play, but in a nervy match it took until the 75th minute before they could get back on level terms with a Juan Pablo strike that sent the capacity crowd into raptures.
With the scoreline at 1-1 the game then went into extra time but the dismissal of Rosky for a 2nd yellow card reduced the home side to ten men. A resilient performance saw Horadada hang on, however, and force to tie to penalties which they eventually won 4-3 to regain their place in Preferente. Horadada now join Intercity San Juan and CF Independiente from Alicante as the three teams that move back up into the 5th tier of
Spanish football while Petrelense, Monforte and Calpe CF drop back into the Regional division. The team, having been presented with a commemorative shirt, boarded their celebratory transport which, in the absence of an open top bus, saw the team parade around the ground, in front of their fans, in a bright green tractor and trailer. No open top bus for Horadada’s lap of honour
