T

he ninth annual walk for life, organised by the Pink Ladies and Panthers, took place on Sunday morning, getting underway mid-morning from it’s usual starting point at Flamenca Beach on the Orihuela Costa. The solidarity campaign was aiming to raise awareness of cancer and the support avail-

able, both before and after diagnosis, as well as raising funds to cover the cost of its many subsidised Screening Programmes provided by doctors, nurses, social workers and local volunteers here in Spain. Continued on Page 2

other walkers, to provide their support and encouragement, and to help those other sufferers who were going through the process themselves.

Although the walk didn’t get underway until just after 10.20 volunteers were queuing up at the registration desk as early as 9 o’clock. Once they had booked in they were able to wander around the merchandising and refreshment tables, talk to the many volunteers, and make their appointments for mammogram, smear, prostate, colon & skin cancer tests, while they waited for the walk to get underway.

On completing the route and gathering once again at Playa Flamenca Promenade, the walkers and their supporters were treated to some of the best entertainment that the Costa Blanca can offer with Just Ollie, Nikki G, Paul Michael, Dan Davey, David John Williams, Elvar & Brenda, Janelle Gaskell, Sally Ann Rogers, Johnny Lea, Cindy Fitzpatrick & Texas Ted all providing their services absolutely free. Once again, that fundraiser extraordinaire, Stevie Spit was hosting the event along with long-time supporter, Simon Morton from Sunshine Radio.

Advance booking for these checks forms part of the AECC’s Early Detection Programme – and is always a most important part of this event. Having collected their free bottle of water provided by Evolution Bar, and free t shirt, courtesy of Spain Property Shop, and with the Orihuela Costa Local Police and Protection Civil marshalling the 5km route, a ribbon of colour, which included the Councillor for Beaches Louisa Boné, streamed off along Calle de los Orquideas, past the Correos office toward the Ayuntamiento. Whilst a number stepped out briskly at the front there were many who preferred to take a rather more leisurely pace, some with small children in pushchairs, many walking their dogs and of course a number with plastic hips and knees, all of whom had no interest at all in ‘hurrying’ around the 5km course.

One rather elderly walker said to me “I have the t shirt and I have done it all before,” as she ambled off in no hurry at all at the back of the pack. “I might not finish the walk until after lunchtime but have not doubts, I will be back.”

There were also a number of AECC merchandising stalls, all hoping to do brisk business, along with adults and children's tombola, and of course the many volunteers who were there to book appointments and answer people’s questions and queries. So a very well done to all that contributed toward raising these funds and to the many volunteers which, without the support of the greater community, along with the participation of the walkers of course, would not be possible.

Many participants had undergone treatment for the illness and were there to chat along the route to

Beaches reopen as jellyfish alerts phased down In Campoamor the jellyfish warning flag is flying upside down

to our beaches for older people". On the Orihuela Costa the Councillor for Beaches, Luisa Boné, says that she does not want to create social alarm especially as a total of only 4 jellyfish have been found on La Caleta and Cala Capitán beaches. A group of volunteers were the first to monitor the Orihuela Costa waters, joined last week by Civil Protection officers who have been conducting their own inspections on the beaches and in the water.

Staff from the Proteccion Civil will continue to monitor the shoreline and the beaches for the presence of jellyfish

T

orrevieja has withdrawn the swimming ban on the 2 km stretch of coastline in La Mata that was closed on 19 May following the discovery of about 20 specimens of the Portuguese Man o’ war jellyfish in the sea. Municipal sources confirmed that this maritime strip of La Mata reopened to bathers on Tuesday morning On the remaining Torrevieja beaches the council has decided to retain yellow flag for the time being as a precaution, together with another specific flag indicating the possible presence of jellyfish. A spokesman said that

the flags will remain whilst there is the absence of lifeguards but bathers who wish to enter the sea do so at their own risk. Also in Torrevieja councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares, said they have now finished installing about 150 meters of access walkways on three beaches in La Mata, Los Náufragos, and El Acequión. The councillor said that "this is something we have been working on for weeks and on Wednesday today we have completed phase one prior to moving on to doing the same on other beaches. We consider the walkways very important for people with mobility problems and also to provide more comfortable access

Although the result has been negative, the yellow flag and the jellyfish pennant will continue to fly on the beaches until such time as the council receives new recommendations from the Ecological Coastal Inst. Speaking once again about the lack of beach bars on the Orihuela Costa Ms Boné seems now to be a little more defensive in her statements. She says the Contracts department is working ‘against the clock’ to award the new contract but there could now be a problem meaning that there is a possibility that the administrative procedures might not be finished in time which could prevent the bars opening for the start of the holiday season. Indeed on Thursday the contracts department recommended that the tender process should be suspended until certain anomalies, which they didn’t clarify, could be cleared up. They said that if the tender continues it could cause damage which would be extremely difficult to rectify. However, the Popular Party (PP) and Citizens (Cs) declined the advice saying that it would mean further delaying the start-up of a service that has been inactive for over a month and a half, which would also generate more neighborhood criticism. Perhaps she and her colleague, Cllr Saez in the contracts department, should have spent a little more time thinking the problems through prior to their hare-brained closure tactics in March.

84 seats. He was supported in the vote by a coalition made up of the left-wing Podemos, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Catalan Republican Left (ERC). The new Prime Minister was sworn in by the king on Saturday morning in the presence of Mariano Rajoy, the president of the Congress, Ana Pastor, the Senate, Pío García Escudero, the Constitutional Court, Juan José González Rivas, and the Supreme Court, Carlos Lesmes where, for the very first time in the democratic era, he did so before the Constitution, but without the presence of a Bible or a crucifix. He then went away to meet with several expectant parties, all with conflicting interests to see to, for agreeing to oust Mr Rajoy. In forming his provisional government it will be impossible for the new prime minister to satisfy all of his diverse coalition, many of whom voted with him purely in a bid to oust Rajoy rather than support any program presented by the PSOE. But following his swearing in by the king on Saturday morning Sánchez tweeted “Democracy in Spain opens a new page. A stage to recover the

dignity of institutions. From responsibility, dialogue and consensus, it is time to work for equality, to build a country that does not leave anyone on the way.” He will need every ounce of political nouse that he possesses, as well as the intelligent exercising of prudent and clever governance, if he is to steer his way through the minefield that he now faces, as he attempts to establish himself in government.

According to the reports published in the Spanish newspaper eldiario.es, Bascuñana was functionally attached to the Territorial Directorate of the Ministry of Health in Alicante for six years, but did not attend in all that time, despite pocketing a large salary. The Ministry has asked its Territorial Directorate for a complete report specifying the exact position. The spokesman of Ciudadanos, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, coalition partners of the PP government announced on Thursday that if the Ministry confirms the information published "we will ask Emilio Bascuñana to take a step back and the C’s will consider leaving the government or asking for his resignation." Bascuñana has firmly stated “that the accusations are completely false" and that "they have been taken out of context and may appear to be what they are not", in addition to stating that the data "has

been manipulated." Bascuñana took the unprecedented step of issuing a 1200 word statement refuting the allegations nd detailing the activities on which he was empyed at that time as well as reminding people that he has been working for the public health service for more than 20 years and points out that, after suffering a heart attack in 2007, "I was advised to carry out only low-intensity work". Thus began a period, between November 1, 2007 and January 7, 2014, in which he was attached to the Territorial Directorate of Health in Alicante, performing his work as a consultant and developing reports on the management of resources in the field of services against drug addiction, in which he said that he was considered "an expert" due to his experience in the Red Cross, to which he has also been linked for more than 30 years. Meanwhile the local spokeswoman of the PSOE, Carolina Gracia, regretted that Orihuela is seen again "to be linked to shenanigans and corruption" and has described these accusations as "very serious", pointing out that "corruption seems to be part of the DNA of the Partido Popular".

Lending a helping paw to Torrevieja hospital patients R

ibera Salud, the health business management group, and the College of Veterinarians of Alicante (Icoval) have introduced a procedure that will allow family pets to visit their owners in hospitals. This is the first such initiative in the Region of Valencia and one of the first across the whole of Spain.

Any costs incurred in obtaining veterinary certification must be met by the hospital patients.

The company, which manages the University Hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó (Elche), made the announcement on a press release on the Ribera Salud website on Tuesday. They say that the measure is in response to requests by patients themselves which they have been trying out for some time Similar programs are already in place, the “Dogspital” program at the Hospital de Ibiza and the "Can de la mano" program at the Hospital La Fe in Valencia. The Ribera Salud and Icoval program will be the only one in Spain that allows meetings between patients hospitalised with severe pathologies or long-stay patients and their own pets. In the USA, in Florida or California, where these measures are already well consolidated and regulated, the most recent research shows that the presence of pets brings feelings of tranquillity and relaxationto the patient, as well as the reduction of

heart rate or blood pressure. The Deputy Director of Management in the Torrevieja and Vinalopó hospitals, José David Zafrilla , has expressed his satisfaction with the introduction of the measure, which "has the goal of responding to the needs of patients, who find the company of their pets is a form of relief, offering a reduction of anxiety and improvement of their mood. Patients wishing to have their pets included in the program will need to make a request to their doctor who will determine the suitability of the application according to medical criteria (after ensuring that there is no risk of worsening or allergic reaction). The doctor will also consider whether it is possible to move the patient to a 'meeting area', a place especially established for such a purpose. Once the doctor's approval has been obtained, the patient will be informed of the documentation to be provided and it is here that the veterinarian will then assume the leading role, since he will be responsible for ensuring that a sanitary passport certifies that the animal has been properly vaccinated, dewormed and is in good health. Any costs incurred in obtaining veterinary certification must also be met by the patients.

Police ‘swot up’ on false vehicle documentation The Torrevieja mayor addresses the students on the opening day

T

he mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, opened a "Basic course of documentary falsification - Actions in respect of foreign vehicles”, on Monday morning which is being taught in the CdT to Commanders and Agents by José Poveda and José del Peral. In addressing the students the mayor encouraged his officers to "improve their knowledge with professional training. It is always positive to have appropriate training so that you can develop your task with the best possible knowledge, "he said. Both agent Poveda and Peral have received specific training on the documentation required to be carried by foreign vehicle, saying that

they are grateful that they now have the opportunity to train their colleagues. Dolón said that no "limitation" is being placed on such courses, "you know that we need to introduce all kinds of training for the police and in the other departments. We try to make training a part of your daily life, "he added. Through this course the officers will receive legal training on general aspects associated with crimes of falsification of documents, information on valid permits in order to drive in Spain, methods of verification of personal and vehicle documentation and actions to take with foreign vehicles.

Poveda is a judicial expert in documents of illicit traffic or of dubious origin, while agent José del Peral is an expert in Criminal Law. Both will teach the protocols of identification and necessary action to be taken on identifying false documents, given that with a minimum knowledge it is possible to intervene or detect stolen vehicles and official, public or private documents that are obviously falsified. The first phase, with 20 students, will last until Friday. The second course is scheduled to run from June 4 to 8.

Celebrating Fiestas F

iestas can be a confusing experience for expats living in Spain and the Canary Islands. They tend to creep up on you and there have been many times that I have found shops and offices to be closed when least expected. Municipalities tend to celebrate fiestas on different days, which can also be confusing for workers living in one municipality, but working in another. Fiestas are a way of life in Spain and I often admire the ingenuity with which a fiesta can be linked with a weekend via a ‘puente day’ (bridging day) to create a very long weekend or even a week off work if the calendar works out correctly! My favourite fiesta is ‘Día de Canarias (Canaries Day), which is celebrated throughout the Canary Islands. The actual day of celebration is 30 May, but celebrated on 29 May, which allows sufficient time to recover from excessive partying during the night before the actual day of celebration. We can happily visit any shop or office in the full knowledge that it will be closed (unless in the tourist areas). At least we all know where we are with this fiesta, and there is little confusion about the date of this big event. The Canary Islands consist of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro and the Chinijo Archipelago, which include the islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. Spain began the conquest of the islands in 1402, which were finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Castile in 1495. On 10 August 1982, the islands were granted autonomous community status within Spain. Canaries Day is special, since it represents the culmination of long held desires for greater representation and autonomy of the islands within Spain. 30th May 1983 represents the first session of the Canarian

My favourite fiesta is ‘Día de Canarias (Canaries Day), which is celebrated throughout the Canary Islands. Parliament, and was the beginning of a louder voice for the islands. In the build-up to Canaries Day, Canarian flags are proudly displayed, balconies decorated with flowers and children dressed in their finest traditional Canarian costumes. It is a good time to taste and experience some of the unique Canarian dishes, as well as admiring local crafts. Schools encourage and remind children and local people of Canarian culture and traditions, with many schools holding special classes to remind residents of their place within the islands’ history and customs. In many towns and villages there are special church services, sporting events, food tastings, animal shows, concerts of traditional music, and exhibitions of arts and crafts made by local people. Parties are often held at home or in restaurants on the evening of May 29th, and celebrations continue on the big day itself. The flying of flags across the islands is also an important part of the celebrations. For British visitors, this can seem unusual, since the British public rarely fly the Union flag, and normally it only appears for formal state and ceremonial occasions, such as Royal weddings. In the Canary Islands, it is common to see the Canarian flag, the Spanish flag and, dare I say, the European Union flag, flying together to represent unity and harmony. The first flag for the Canary Islands was created in 1961 by a political movement called ‘The Free Canary Islands’. The flag is a tricolour of equal vertical bands in white, blue and yellow, with the coat of arms of the Canary Islands on the blue band at the centre of the state flag. Since arguments between the two largest islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, have been vociferous in the

past, the flag sensibly combines the maritime flags of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, which are the blue and white colours of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the blue and yellow colours of the Province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The placement of the colours is said to correspond with the physical location of the two major islands, with white for Tenerife on the left, representing the island’s western location. Yellow, for Gran Canaria, is on the right representing the island’s eastern location. The colour blue in the centre of the flag is the common colour for both islands and their provinces. The coat of arms included on the state flag consists of a blue shield supported by two dogs. The two dogs are a reference to the Latin name ‘Insula Canaria’, which means ‘Island of Dogs’, which disappointingly has nothing at all to do with canary birds. There is a red crown at the top of the shield, demonstrating allegiance to Spain’s monarchy, and a banner with the word ‘Oceano’ above the crown. Interestingly, although the islands are not an independent country, the flag can be found as an emoji on some of the more popular smartphone apps, which has created amusement and interest on the islands. All of Spain’s autonomous communities celebrate their special days in ways that are appropriate to their unique culture and traditions. Wherever you are living or staying in Spain, do make an effort to participate and enjoy these special fiestas, since they are intrinsic parts of this amazing, vibrant and colourful country. La Pedrera to become Natural Area

B

igastro’s councillor for the Environment, Antonio Meseguer, has begun procedures which he hopes will eventually see the area of La Pedrera and la loma de Bigastro declared as a Natural Area. He told the press on Monday that the initiative will allow the entire area, which is of great ecological, natural and historical value, to acquire protection against any future type of urban threat. If successful, this natural space, which already has a leisure area, will enable the council to retain outdoor freedom for residents and visitors as well as protecting all of the environmental and educational aspects that the park will be able to offer. La Pedrera is an area that is already visited by many thousands of

people from across the region of the Vega Baja, who come to the area to enjoy a quiet and relaxing time in the park, where they can walk, jog, or cycle along well establish trails alongside a beautiful lake. Meseguer said that they hope to meet this goal before 2019 "it is important and we ensure that this natural space is protected, preserved and has regular maintenance and improvements once it’s confirmation as a Natural Area has been achieved". The Consellería de Medio Ambiente now has has the proposal his desk following which his environmental staff will visit the lake to survey the area to be protected and finally, once all the material has been collected, it will be taken to the municipal plenary session for the go-ahead to submit the initiative and make it official.

Santiago La Ribera shows off 3,500 custom bikes Last weekend the town of Santiago de la Ribera celebrated the most important concentration of custom motorcycles in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. The Hot Rally-San Javier brought together some 3,500 motorcycles and more than 5,000 people from all over the country and Europe. The genuine American biker atmosphere completely took over the town along the Barnuevo esplanade and Paseo Colón, which hosted these classic and retro two-wheeled vehicles customised by their owners. There were numerous stalls selling wares ranging from spare parts, T-shirts and many other bike other related goods which also attracted a large number of visitors. On Saturday the weekend got underway with the Blueswing Rock band and paella before many of the bikers took a trip around the local area, including the Air Academy. There was a bike show on the esplanade later that

evening which was followed by music and concerts long into the night. Sunday saw the bikers back on the esplanade where they bade farewell to the XV Anniversary Rally with a barbecue.

Are you considering giving blood? In view of World Blood Donor Day, which is being marked on 14th June, there are an increasing number of blood donor sessions being advertised locally in the English Language and Spanish press. As such, expatriates should be aware of restrictions placed by the BOE’s Royal Decree (in Spanish). Grounds for exclusion include any citizen, regardless of nationality, who spent over 12 months living in the UK between 1980 and 1996, due to risks derived from the so called Mad Cow Disease (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease). Of course the restriction would mainly apply to British expats so if you are considering attending such a session you must make the medical staff aware of your situation. More information is available on the Ministry of Health’s website www.msssi.gob.es/profesionales/saludPublica/med icinaTransfusional/donarsangre.htm

Each regions government will have specific instructions. Best to google ‘donar sangre’ and add your province or town. Alternatively you could speak to your local representative of the Red Cross who’s blood donation site can be found at http://www.donarsangre.org/

Samaritans in Spain You talk, We Listen One Last Call – Another true story "People say, “You only live once, so make the most of it.” Well, I’m proof that you can get a second chance says Kevin – and I owe it to Samaritans. "Looking back, things had been building up for a long time. Redundancy, relationship breakdowns… it was just one thing after another. "And though I had two lovely sons and some great mates, I didn’t want them to know how low I’d become. Goodbye letters "Then, one evening, I found myself writing goodbye letters to my friends and family – I really believed they would be better off without me. "The next day I had breakfast with my son and watched as he left the house for work. As far as I was concerned, this would be the last time I would see him."I left the house, thinking that I would never return. "I found myself looking through the contacts on my mobile, wondering if anyone would miss me. That’s when I came across Samaritans’

number from a time when I’d called before but hung up, unable to talk. "To this day I don’t know what made me call, but I’m so glad I did. Making the call "The volunteer who answered was amazing. I was in a terrible state, but she was calm, understanding and, most importantly, seemed to genuinely care. "I poured my heart out to her and she gently suggested that I walk to the Samaritans Drop In Centre, where I would be safe and there’d be someone to talk to. "She stayed on the line while I did this and, at the Centre, the tears really began to flow. She listened to what I had to say, and talking to her helped me work out what I could do. Moving on "Over the next few months, I slowly but surely began to put my life back together. Now, nearly three years on, I’ve got a whole new life. Should you identify with any of these issues and want to talk to someone in complete confidence then why not give us a call. We are SAMARITANS IN SPAIN – You Talk We Listen.

HELP gives to the Red Cross On Thursday 24th May at the HELP office in Los Alcazares HELP´s President Christine Baillie presented a cheque for €3000 to Snr. Antonio Tarraga Zapata, Director of Caritas San Pedro and Snr. Antonio Lopez Moreno who working with the Red Cross are supporting those in need in the San Pedro area. Many of the hotels and supermarkets in the San Pedro area have large quantities of fresh food left at the end of the working day and they are quite willing to donate this food to the Red Cross rather than it going to landfill sites. The money will go a long way towards purchasing an industrial size cold cabinet so that the Red Cross can collect and store this food overnight ready to be given to those in need the following day. This donation of money raised by the volunteers of HELP Murcia Mar Menor during 2017 from their outlet and car boot sales is the third to have been made this year making a total so far of €9000 given to Charities in the Mar Menor area. The picture shows Christine Baillie and Audrey Haigh of HELP making the presentation to Snr. Antonio Tarraga Zapata who presented HELP with a certificate of thanks.

Crescendo International Choir By Nancy Klein Crescendo International Choir gave several concerts in the Costa Blanca area this spring, entertaining attendees with a wide variety of musical melodies while raising money for people in need in various local communities. On Friday, May 25, Crescendo International Choir members entertained residents of Casa Verde in Almoradi. Although this particular concert was not a fundraiser, residents seemed to enjoy listening to it, particularly the Spanish songs El Vito and Si Tu Me Dices Ven, with some people singing along with the choir. The residents also liked the Dutch song we sang titled, Ann der Amsterdamer Gretchen. This popular Dutch song about the canals of Amsterdam included solos by Jack Van Dam and Rob De Bruin. Among other songs performed were To Everything There is a Season, based on writings in the book of Ecclesiastes in The Bible, and Are You Going to Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel and Imagine by John Lennon. At Benijofar Casa de Culture, on Saturday, May 26th, Crescendo International Choir performed a fundraising concert. In addition to the songs already noted, two of the other songs performed were the Brazilian tune Balaio and The Girl from Ipanema, a song that refers to a popular beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. John Cloney sang a solo as part of the performance of this melody.

Concert attendees, many of whom were Dutch, donated more than 200 Euros after hearing the concert. This money was given to Social Services of Benijofar to buy non-perishable food items for about 50 needy individuals and families in town. Claudia Frank and partner Brian Helliwell have volunteered for the last six years raising money for needy Benijofar families and going to the supermarket to buy food that is then distributed by a social worker from the city of Benijofar. They also help provide clothes, shoes and school supplies to needy individuals and families in Benijofar. When Frank and Helliwell go to the supermarket to help needy families, which they do at least twice a month, they select one of each item they want to buy and then talk to the store man- Maureen Payne of Age Concern and Jeff Myers of the Heart Foundation UK, accepting donations from Mary ager about the actual amount of each item they would like delivered to the food pantry. Carlos remains committed to Monte By Andrew Atkinson

C

arlos Perez will remain as coach of 1st Regional club CD Montesinos having lead the Vega Baja outfit to promotion last

year. Former Torrevieja player Perez guided the Los Montesinos, Alicante, side to finish in fifth place during the 2017-18 campaign. Perez and assistant Ivan Angel have committed themselves to CD Montesinos for the 2018-19 season, an announcement made in the wake of the end of season awards. Perez replaced sacked Camacho during a time of turmoil at the club, going on to lead CD Montesinos to promotion, creating history, it being the first time in reaching the 1st Regional. "The 2017-18 season was one of settling into the throes of 1st Regional football, which saw the club compete at a higher level," Perez told me. "Finishing above mid-table was a bonus", said Perez. "I looked forward to the challenge. Hopefully we can go forward in the 2018-19 season", said Perez. CD Montesinos's AGM will take place on 5th June.

Perez guided Monte to a 5th place finish in their first season in Regional One.

Gran Alacant ‘Oldies’ Walking Football T he Oldies Gran Alacant Walking Football Club was formed last August and after 37 weekly sessions played their first away game at Rojales on May 22nd. Our motley crew (as you can see in the picture) in their first ‘competitive’ match put up a spirited performance going down 8-3 to Rojales on their Astro pitch. We were only 5-3 down early in the third quarter but defensive frailties cost us three further goals. Mike with two and John were our scorers. A very fair referee who let no one get away with running except luckily our players! No injuries reported (including heatstroke or sunburn) and we all enjoyed the hospitality of the hosts in the bar after the game. Looking now for players for our next match against San Fulgencio on their astro turf pitch on June 12th. We cannot play these teams at home as we do not have an astro turf pitch here on Gran Alacant. Our sponsored shirts looked good at the Rojales game, thanks to Gran Alacant Properties, GA Homefinders, Gran Alacant Advertiser magazine, Hispania, and La Paletta Restaurant. We play every Thursday afternoon at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre. We now have 41 registered players, some live here others have holiday homes on Gran Alacant. Our ages range in the 60s and 70s with a few in their 50s. There is no running, no tackling and no physical con-

tact. Come and join us. Ability means nothing. We are nearing 40 weekly sessions since last August. One picture of the lads that played at Rojales and one picture of our players with our sponsors If you would like any further information, please email Barry on laneinspain@hotmail.com

Vistabella Bowls Report With Lynne Bishop

It was nice to be back in league play this morning, with the Buckskins playing host to La siesta Hornets. The match started in wonderful sunny and wind less conditions, but became windier as time went on, making play quite tricky for all, but we had a splendid morning of bowls. The rinks were share equally at 3 each, with all Buckskins’ losses being by just the one shot and taking the overall shots by 117-101, a good result all round. Dolly Ford, Pam Harris, and Brian Harris 1516. Lesley Day, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 17-18. Ann Abbott, Bob Day and Malc Elmore 26-15. David Wright, Graham Day and Keith Longshaw 26-25. On Wednesday the VCL match was at Quesada against the Cheetahs, I can do no better than to give you Stew words and views on the match. LEADER

Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham Back to the league matches again this week after two weeks of Spanish Nationals. Monday we were away to San Miguel Moors who are the table leaders with 54 points. It was always going to be a difficult match with their team sprinkled with finalists from the Nationals, but we are proud of our team who put up a great fight on the Moors home turf. We managed to win on three rinks, but lost the overall shot points as unfortunately one of our teams lost by 19 shots; it can happen to all of us! Our winning trips were: Wayne Jackson, Dennis Wade and Roy Thompson 13 - 11. John Goddard, Margaret Odell and Jeff Hier 22 – 15 Yvonne Hurlock, Les Davies and Brian Eatough 18 - 17. Our thanks also to those who played in the friendly match, albeit sacrificial lambs to the slaughter! The overall shots were San Miguel Moors 116 Horadada Hawks 95 giving us 6 points and San Miguel 8 points. This was an excellent result for us, as it keeps us in 2nd place with 40 pts. On Wednesday it was a VCL home match against Greenlands Jasmine. This was a well needed, well deserved win for Horadada. We won on 4 different disciplines but I have to mention the Ladies Singles represented by Linda Hier. This was an extremely close match throughout and Linda was in front by 20 points to 16 but just could not get that last shot. The opposition just crept up and took the match 21 – 20. Well played Linda. The winning rinks were: Gents Singles – Terry Hucknall 21 – 16. Another close match throughout. Pairs – John Jukes and Wayne Osguthorpe 20 – 15. Triples – Carol Linehan, Jack Linehan and Barry Evans 27 – 13 Rinks – Les Davies, Roy Thompson, Bryan Eatough and Alan Miller 26 – 20 The overall shots were 114 for and 85 against. Very well played to all our players. Take a positive from this result as it moves us up ahead of Greenlands. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ team!! Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information.

Carp R Us Round three of the Carp-R-Us Summer Series was fished on the Eden stretch of the Segura at Guardamar. This is normally a fairly even stretch but fishes hard when there is no flow, as was the case today. The match was won by ‘debutante’ Paul Davies from peg 3 with 3.62 kg caught using bread on the pole. Second was Tom Marshall with 3.56kg caught using bread and corn, third was Steve Owen with 3.42kg and fourth was Roy Dainty with 2.40kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website at www.carp-r-us.weebly.comor on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

On May 13th both races were contested, over a planned four laps, by 14 members sailing 9 boats. Race one, got off to a lively start, in three separate tranches, the two Laser 2000’s, the Hartley 12.2 and the Quba take front stage, closely followed by a Sailfish 18, the Areaz 20 and the Gamba. Taking it rather leisurely and doing their run in from nearer Lo Pagan than the start was Mistral, the other Sailfish 18 in the fleet. The course included a tricky leg near the moored ferry making all boats aware that they needed to get their tactics right. Soon a pattern established with the Lasers taking the lead followed by the single handed Hartley and Quba, then the Gamba, a Sailfish, the Araez finally the second Sailfish. The really fluky wind, probably caused by the coming off the shore and being deflected by the taller buildings, continually changing direction and going from 0.5 knots up to nearly 12 knots, caused havoc as some sailors got stuck in the dead zones whilst others just 20 yards away seemed to get onto the gusts and

move up through the field.

increasing to 15 knots plus.

The finish was a close run thing between the two Lasers who were separated by just 22 seconds.

Sirocco had to retire after lap one as she was being sailed single handed, heeling badly and taking water over the cockpit. She had to be helped onto her mooring by the support boat.

Race two, what a different story! Over the same course but, with a warning from the race officer at the briefing, to expect some serious wind gusts was, in everybody’s opinion, one of the strangest they had experienced It started with a very close race to get to the start line first with Brian and Jim on a Laser 2000 making some pretty nifty turns to get across just before Tug and Diane on the other 2000. However, excitement got the better of both of them, and they crossed before the start gun and had to return and start again. However they soon caught up with fleet and soon a similar pattern to the first race began to establish. All of the boats rounded the second buoy pretty much together and then a strange phenomenon happened, the wind dropped completely but the waves continued to build and then the wind erupted from the east slowly veering to the south and

On the next lap and with boats scattered around everywhere, the two Lasers and the Hartley were disqualified for missing one of the marks in their attempts to try and keep upright, leaving the field wide open for those who could manage to keep their boats going. The race officer wisely shortened the course to three laps, although no one heard the signal and continued to do a forth.. Eventually all boats finished, but Mistral had her foresail jam, could not pick up her mooring and landed on the reef. Again the support boat came to her assistance and towed her off. The heroes of the day, the support boat crew Martyn Bisofsky and Julian Singleton. The baddy of the day the weird wind conditions.

Mike ProBert talks golf Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and residentS alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. STAYING IN THE PRESENT All the golfing psychology books in the world will tell you to play one shot at a time and to forget about the future of the past. Trust me this is easier said than done and staying in the present is one of the hardest things to do in golf BUT it is something that all golfers must attempt to master. Just why is it so difficult? The answer is that during a long game of golf you have a lot of time on your hands to think and if you consider that your mind can change and switch from present to past and then future in an instant then what is it going to do in 5 hours? I bet you that you have regular playing partners who claim to be able to stay in the present at all times and then they say something like “ As I stood on the 5th tee was thinking that this is a birdie hole”. You can see from this statement that the player is already thinking 3 or 4 shots in front and is therefore already in the future. I remind you again that to remain truly in the present a golfer should only be thinking about the next shot to be faced and where and how they are going to hit the ball to the target selected. The player should then hit the shot, find it, ACCEPT the result and then start thinking only about the next shot and then repeat this process of thinking until the ball is in the hole or until he runs out of holes. When you are on the golf course you should never evaluate how you are playing because this automatically means that you are thinking about the past and you must not judge or critique for the same reason. You must at no time keep a mental running score and start thinking about breaking 70,80,90 etc because this means that you are thinking about both the past and future in an instant. If you start to think about the past and the future there is a danger that you become protective, negetive and tight with resulting bad golf.

(in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs) As an example in the 1961 US Masters Arnold Palmer walked up the 18th fairway leading the event and a close friend prematurely congratulated him on his win but he hit the ball into a greenside bunker, ultimately took a 6 and lost to Gary Player. The moment his friend congratulated him on his ‘win’ he lost focus on the task at hand and looked forward to the result with disastrous results. The best way to get around the golf course successfully is to simply play each shot at hand until you run out of holes and then add it up. Hollow Tining Watch

Just why is it so important to stay in the present?

La Marquesa 04/06/18 - Puig Campana 11/06/18

The answer is that golf requires a narrow focus on where you want the ball to go and ANYTHING that detracts from this focus damages your ability to perform.

Quotation of the Week

T.M.G.S. @ Mar Menor 30/5/18

After our visit to Las Pinaillas the previous 2 days, just 24 members signed up for a rare visit to the Mar Menor.

Congratulations to new member, Spencer Bayley scoring 35 points of 9 on his first game with us and also his visit game a Mar Menor.

The weather forecast didn’t look good but by the time we turned onto the back 9 the black clouds had disappeared and the temperature rose to the mid 20’s and this reflected in the scores.

The 2’s pot contained €50 and with the tricky greens it was expected that this might get rolled over to next week’s visit to Altorreal, alas it was not to be, Derek Sullivan made a 2 on the 8th and Arne Kilnes on the 2nd, albeit a chip-in from some distance but they all count as a 2!

The course was in excellent condition except that the greens were a little slow after the recent maintenance; this actually suited some members while the lower handicappers struggled a little.

Results; N.T.P.’s hole 2 T. Roed, hole, 8 D. Sullivan, hole 14 S. Bayley, hole 17 L. Holmberg . Silver cat:

3rd P. O’Dowd 34, 2nd A. Goslan 34 on L/H L. 1st Holmberg 40 and a very nice cut. It must be noted that the Captain was still recovering from his “hangover” when he made an error with the recording of the results, it appears that when he is told 32 points it sounds like 34 points! Gold cat: 3rd S. Bayley 35, 2nd D. Sullivan 36, 1st O. Rong 37. Follow our Society at www.tmgs.org or via www.facebook.com/tmgsgolf

Celts GS Captains Day Terry Fitzgerald Where do we start with the superlatives for a truly memorable day? We celebrated our captains’ day “Terry Fitzgerald” with a fantastic day of golf at La Serena last Saturday. The weather was ideal ideal for golf with 25 degrees with a gentle breeze keeping us cool. The golf course again is in excellent condition and we must thank Wayne and his team for their efforts, the greens the fairways and the general presentation of the course makes playing golf at La Serena a pleasure. To the staff in the pro-shop thank you, Jean and Paul for preparing the cards, collating the results and also for erecting our banner on the 10th tee. Our competition committee are doing sterling work with a special thank you to Camillus and Philip who organised the 92 players. It was a fantastic team effort (all two of you), well done. Can I again remind players to please return your cards as soon as possible to the shop on the open days so that they can generate the results on the computer and return the scores to Madrid. If you fail to return your card you cannot have your handicap adjusted and it also impacts on the days handicap, or CSS. We had our presentation dinner in Meson El Prado in San Miguel. What can we say it worked like clockwork, to perfection with everybody enjoying a sumptuous dinner in their outdoor patio. We were entertained by the dulcet tones of Steve Clarke, with our very own Jackie Whyte performing some of her favourite songs. We had 92 appreciative members and guests who attended the dinner and I would like to thank them one and all for showing their support to Terry. It truly was a one of the most enjoyable social evenings we have hosted. The results on the day were as follows, NTP’s Tony Edwards (2), Ian Howie, Pat Baker, Kenny McGeehan and Camillus Fitzpatrick. Nearest the Captains’ drive, Kevin McBride and nearest the white line hole 11, Kevin Fitzpatrick. Visitors prize went to Eldon Carey with 35 points. 37. Cat III. 1st Jane Knight 38. 2nd Myra Coull 32. 3rdJohn Coholan 31. Cat II. 1st Alisdair McLean 38. 2nd Bill Thomson 38. 3rdPhilip Mountford 38. Cat I. Eddie Wall 37. 2nd Pat Coyne 37. 3rd Robert Smith35. Best gross went to John Doyle O’Brien with a 74. 2nd overall to our Vice Captain James Hayes 39. Enid is particularly happy with her vase however James now feels compelled to buy her flowers on a weekly basis. The overall winner with the fantastic result of 41 points Sheila Coyne. Sheila was surprised and delighted to win the captains’ prize and it was made all the more special as her mother was there to watch her receive her trophy. Lastly can I thank Terry for his kind words about our junta directive, it is very much appreciated to have the work carried out by the junta acknowledged. We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available. Gold Category – 4th John Humphrey 33, 3rd Robin Eastman 35 c/b, 2nd Tony Smale 35 c/b, 1st John Osborne. This week found us at Altoreal just the other side of Murcia. In the past this journey has proved a little tricky for some members but today every one of our 37 players arrived on time, raring to go. A drizzle of rain early in the round didn’t affect the general playing conditions as the course was in good condition. The greens were a little slow but very receptive. The day warmed up nicely and the scoring was respectable rather than spectacular. Only John Osborne hit the magic 36 points which probably reflected the fact that the tees were well back.

Although the green keeper´s advice to hit it hard an straight was not too far wrong! The results were

The highlight of El Plantio 2's Monthly Medal was a hole-in-one executed by Gary Needham at the 8th hole – the 2nd hole-in-one at this hole in 2 weeks. Hole 8 is one of the shortest holes on the course, but statistics say that it is the one most bogied, being surrounded on three sides by deep and difficult bunkers. Last month's medal runner-up, Alistair Douglas was in prime position to go one better, but a triple bogie at his last hole, No 8 – left him having to settle for 2nd place behind the excellent John Wilby. Also excelling was Alan Janes with two superb shots for nearest the pin.

Nearest the pins – Hole 4 and 9, Alan Janes. 3rd Place, John Burke, Handicap 7.1 – 54.9 shots, 2nd Place, Alistair Douglas, Handicap 12.9 – 53.1 shots. 1st Place, John Wilby, Handicap 3.3 - 52.7 shots. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230 The photograph L to R, Gary Needham, John Burke, John Wilby, Alistair Douglas, Alan Janes.
