Residents Association slams Cabo Roig Market Traders

T

he Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas has highlighted the disgraceful state of the Cabo Roig area following the Thursday market on their Facebook page, calling the actions of the market traders

‘appalling and completely disrespectful’ to local residents and to the Limpieza Viaria y RSU Orihuela, who have to clean up the mess following their departure. They have uploaded over 20 photographs of the market

aftermath showing the rubbish and litter discarded by the merchants and the market users on a weekly basis both in the immediate market area and in the surrounding streets of Calles Mar, Tierra, Aire and Agua, and along the Aguamarina promenade.

The association are now seeking the opinions of local residents who they are asking to comment on how things should be changed, so that when the market is over, it is left in a better order. Continued on Page 2

Opinion about the market location is still deeply divided amongst residents, with many concerned about the disruption caused in the area every week. They say that the market should be moved to a site that is better equipped to hold such an activity, somewhere like the main car park directly in front of La Zenia Boulevard where there are the facilities and parking is in abundance. One long time dweller told the Leader that from her apartment she can often see stallholders disposing of their rubbish over the cliff face, as they race to clear their pitches and get away at the end of the day. “They don’t want to take the old cardboard and plastic packing away with them, and there are not enough bins, so they simply toss it over the seawall. It’s simply not good enough. On the better run markets there are council superintendents who make sure that sort of thing doesn’t happen. I’ve yet to see one walking round in Aguamarina”. For many years the market was held on the esplanade in front of the urbanisation “Pinar de Campoamor.” It was moved to Calle Fuego in Aguamarina about 4 years ago. This was done at the request of the traders who said that the Campoverde site was dying. There were few people visiting and

the number of stallholders were reducing week by week. They said that the market would only survive if it were moved to a new site where it could attract the public in greater numbers, especially during the winter months. Since the move of the market to the new site many people agree that there has been a notable increase in pedestrian footfall and in the number of traders attending the event, however, in conditions that are wet or windy the location is far from ideal. This can be seen by the number of merchants who choose not to attend during inclement weather when the pitches, particularly along the paseo, are completely open to the elements. But on balance most agree that it is a far better location than that previously used in Campoamor and as such they would resist any further move. However they are now being told by the council that they must clean up their act, as residents increasingly complain, both at the disruption being caused to the local `population and the large amount of rubbish they regularly leave behind every Thursday afternoon. With criticism now also mounting from both the Ayuntamiento and the Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas, which the traders choose largely to ignore, you might wonder just how much longer it will be before discussions about yet another move are brought to a head.

How much longer will it be before discussions about yet another move are once again brought to a head.

Further delays for La Zenia Emergency Centre Hall will say the Valencia regional government is at fault and the Valencia regional government will say Orihuela Town Hall delayed submitting revised plans for many critical months. The main blame no doubt rests with the successive local governments in Orihuela which have failed to give sufficient importance and priority to this vital project which Orihuela Costa needs to meet the security requirements of a population equal to that of the city and many times greater in peak tourist periods. We need facilities for adequate local and national police services, ambulance and fire brigades situated on the coast not dispersed elsewhere. The equipped ambulance which finally arrived to treat the boy suffering cardiac arrest on La Zenia beach came from near Orihuela, 30 kilometres away.

A highly visible rusting skeleton has been a constant reminder of the incompetence and indifference to the needs of Orihuela Costa.

T

he announcement that the sorely needed Emergency Services Centre in Orihuela Costa was to be further delayed was met with disbelief and indignation by residents on the coast. Ten years after work was commenced and 8 years after construction was paralysed by the builder’s bankruptcy, a highly visible rusting skeleton has been a constant reminder of incompetence and indifference to the needs of Orihuela Costa, the news that the Valencia government was reducing the amount of the agreed subsidy and that Orihuela Town Hall would have to be responsible for tendering and supervising

construction of the project was totally unexpected. It is all the more shocking since it was only two weeks ago that a petition signed by over 2,200 people was presented to the Valencian and Orihuela authorities claiming the urgency of completing the project after the tragic death of a young boy on La Zenia beach and the delay of some 40 minutes in the arrival of an adequately equipped ambulance. It is all the more disturbing since the time for accessing the subsidy and completing the project will run out next year. Now Orihuela Costa will no doubt witness the blame game in which the Orihuela Town

Orihuela Costa is and has for ever been ignored and abandoned by the municipal governments located in Orihuela city. Residents living on the coast contribute some 60% of the municipality’s income and receive probably less than 20% of expenditure. The priority of politicians in Orihuela City is the local population which votes for them and whose support can be bought by projects which leave those living on the coast jealous of the superior facilities and services enjoyed by city residents. When it suits them, the Orihuela government can sort out with Valencia problems delaying projects like the Health Centre in Rabaloche and taking back the building previously housing the law courts to name just two recent examples. If the Emergency Services Centre was located in Orihuela city and for city residents it would have been completed years ago. It is the misfortune of those living on the coast that we are of such little importance to successive municipal governments. And, at the same time, it is our fault for not exercising our right to vote and sending our own elected representatives to the Orihuela Town Hall. CLARO Press Release

Three arrested for Torrevieja Real Estate Scam T

he Civil Guard has arrested three people in Torrevieja, two Spanish men aged 47 and 50, and a 34-year-old Polish woman, as alleged perpetrators of a continuing crime of real estate fraud, a crime of forgery of an official document, three additional crimes of document forgery, four crimes of fraud in the processing of foreigner certificates, and a crime of belonging to a criminal group. The three work for a firm of Torrevieja solicitors which has been investigated by the Civil Guard as the criminal base for a group of people dedicated to real estate scams in the real estate world and in the processing of documentation for foreigners. According to the investigations these three people had already committed previous crimes and had their functions well established. Two of them took care of entrapping the victims and gaining their trust. To give more credibility to the transactions, they went to the lawyer's office, who drafted the contracts and performed the necessary legal procedures. With the assumed security provided by these professionals, customers, who were mostly foreigners, seemed happy to pay signifi-

cant amounts of money for the processing of their applications for the certificates of foreign identity numbers (NIE), 3,500 euros to prove economic solvency in Spain, or 30,000 euros if it was in order to reserve a property. Once the money was received, they ignored the clients, who due to their position as foreigners, were reluctant to file a complaint and follow a police process in Spain. In the solicitors office the agents seized documentation, computer equipment and 8,800 euros in cash, of which the origin cannot be justified. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the Civil Guard only a dozen or so people were defrauded from which the benefits to the criminal group was in the region of 50,000 euros. The perpetrators have now been arrested for the crimes of real estate fraud, falsification of official document, falsification of commercial documentation, fraud by the processing of foreigner certificates, and a crime of belonging to a criminal group. Torrevieja’s Court No. 2 ordered the detention of the three perpetrators although one was able to reach an agreement for bail.

SEAT in the ‘streets’ with the Spanish National Football team T

wo days prior to Spain’s first match against Portugal, SEAT launched its first TV spot as sponsoring partner

The campaign features David Silva, Iago Aspas, Koke Resurreción, David de Gea, Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo Moreno and Marco Asensio SEAT presented its first campaign in support of the Spanish National Football Team, two days before their first match against Portugal on Friday 15 June. The campaign is in the form of a poem that highlights Spain’s diversity by taking viewers on a journey of its streets. “I’m a city boy. I’m a country boy. I’m a homeboy. I’m a football fan. Let’s be a part of something big”. This is one of the verses in the poem that SEAT dedicates to the Spanish National Team in a TV spot that showcases Spain’s rich diversity of people, cultures and traditions, as well as the power of football, and especially the National Team, to encourage team spirit and union. SEAT Spain general manager Mikel Palomera pointed out that “with this campaign we want to strengthen support for the Spanish National Football Team on the eve of the competition kick off”. He also emphasised that “we want to be closer to people and remind them of the sense of unity and teamwork that the National Team promotes.” Filmed on location in Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Andalusia and Madrid, the spot, called “Streets”, features the participation of National Team players David Silva, Iago Aspas, Koke Resurreción, David de Gea, Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo Moreno y Marco Asensio. In addition, the spot has been produced in multiple formats to adapt it to TV, print media and digital platforms. Committed to sport In May, SEAT announced it would be sponsoring the Spanish National Football Team until March of 2021, forming a part of the framework of the brand’s commitment to promote sporting values. The agreement includes promotional activities with players of the National Team and the status as the official car of the Spanish National Football Team. SEAT is the only company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets cars in Spain. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting 80% of its vehicles, and is present in over 80 countries. M

ore than 100,000 kids from across the UK took to their streets last Wednesday 13 June to raise awareness of the 39 children who are killed or injured on roads in England every day. Youngsters aged between four and 11 took part in Brake’s Kids Walk, in partnership with Co-op Insurance. This national project is helping them call for key measures to make roads safer, so that more children can enjoy the health and planet-saving benefits of walking. To coincide with the launch of the walk, road safety charity Brake highlighted the true extent of child casualties on the nation's roads. Latest Department for Transport (DfT) figures1

show that 14,273 children were killed or injured on roads in England in 2016. On average, 39 children die or suffer injuries as a result of road crashes every single day. That’s the equivalent of a classroom full every day. The South East has the greatest number of child road casualties (2,343 a year), while the North East has the fewest (702 a year). The region that sees the most child road deaths is the North West, with 15 children killed on the region’s roads in 2016. More than 100,000 children from more than 500 schools and nurseries took part in Brake’s Kids Walk, calling for five key measures to help keep them safe: footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross, slow traffic and clean traffic.

N

o, it is not the latest hot, porn movie or a march for equality, but the rather impressive line-up of cabinet members announced by the new Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez. Politics aside, it is a cabinet composition that has stretched the imaginations of Spanish media headline writers, as well as briefly silencing opposition parties for just long enough for them to get their breath back following an exceptionally long and exhausting week in Spanish politics. It was a week when Spanish politics was turned upon its confused head. At the time of writing, apart from astonishment, criticism of the new line up has been unusually muted. No doubt the usual vitriol from both sides will flow again shortly. It is not unusual for expats to lose interest or distance themselves from the politics of their home country when starting a new life in a country of their choice. That is, until the European Union referendum sparked the debate for British expats. Expats who had stubbornly refused to have anything to do with British politics suddenly became unwillingly entrenched in the debate, and often having to explain what was going on in the UK to mystified Spanish, German and Scandinavian neighbours and friends. “Were the Brits crazy?” many asked. Suddenly, expats began to wonder about their sanity, and worry about their pensions, health entitlement, as well as family and friends who are still living in the UK. Those who had previously ignored their right to vote under the fifteen-year rule suddenly became motivated with a demand that votes for expats should be for life. After all, didn’t they always have a stake in their home country? It is under this backdrop of divisive events in the UK that many expats also became interested in political events in Spain. For many expats, an interest in the politics of their host country is a healthy

At the time of writing, apart from astonishment, criticism of the new line up has been unusually muted. one even though they cannot vote in national elections, being mostly restricted to voting in local and European elections. ‘Know your neighbour’ is a well-known adage, and where better to start than the politics of a country? The new Spanish cabinet has been described by some commentators as “feminist, progressive, pro-European, pro-economy and pro-business”; it is one that prefers logic and reason over religion and belief. Accordingly, there were no crosses or bibles at the swearing-in ceremonies with the Catholic church kept at a polite and dignified arm’s length, at least for the moment. It is also the first cabinet in Europe that has a female-majority, as well as one that includes an astronaut, an aeronautical engineer, a doctor, teachers, two judges, a public prosecutor and economists. Even a new Ministry has been established; the Ecological Transition Ministry, which has been formed to deal with some of Spain’s (and the world’s) most pressing environmental problems, particularly related to climate change. It is now widely thought that the new Prime Minister means to govern, as well as to prepare for early elections. As well as appointing 11 capable, experienced women to his cabinet, including the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Equality Minister. Another woman, Teresa Ribera, is Spain's new Ecological Transition Minister who will be expected to lead the debate on climate change. Interestingly, the Prime Minister has appointed a non-separatist Catalan as Spain’s new Foreign Secretary; an imaginative move that would have been unthinkable a few weeks ago.

In response to the Catalan crisis, the new Spanish Government has already lifted financial controls on Catalonia and the new government has pledged to “try to move forward” with the constitutional situation that has so far blighted attempts of reconciliation. In the end, all parties will have to talk, and so the sooner that these talks begin, the better. I recall the words of a professor of politics who made the statement that there should be no political parties or political party whips within a legitimate democratic process, in favour of a parliament of independents voting with only with their conscience. When challenged that nothing would get done, his response was just one word: “precisely”. The silence and implied goodwill from normally vociferous observers that followed the fall of the previous government last week is probably no more than a brief pause for breath. Still, for expats, it does make a very pleasant change from listening to all those endless and argumentative Brexit debates that seem to go nowhere. Aquarius fleet arrives at the port of Valencia T he first vessel of the Aquarius fleet, the Italian ship Dattilo, arrived in the port of Valencia after eight days at sea at 06.50 hours on Sunday morning with 274 people on board: 182 men, 32 women and 60 children. Accompanied. The boat entered to port shortly before six thirty taking about 20 minutes to dock.

The migrants began to descend at half past seven where they were attended to by over 1,000 Red Cross workers as they stepped off the ship. Police officers were also been drafted in specifically to handle their arrival. The Dattilo, an Italian Coast Guard ship, was carrying the largest number of minors in addition to the seven pregnant women. The arrival of ships was staggered to improve the reception facilities provided to the 629 migrants. The Aquarius, the second vessel - from the NGO SOS Mediterráneo, arrived at 9 am, while the Orione de la Marina Militare docked in Valencia at around midday. As to whether they will stay in Spain or not, Red Cross Valencia explained that it will depend on whether they choose to settle or continue with their migratory route. The Minister of Development, José Luis Ábalos, said on Saturday that migrants on board the Aquarius will receive a "special authorization" of just one month after which they will be treated in accordance with Spanish law. On behalf of the Generalitat, the 'president', Ximo Puig, praised the

"wave of solidarity" that Valencian society has exhibited with the reception of Aquarius. "We have gone from València de la Gürtel to the Comunitat de la solidaridad", he said, as he defined it as an act of humanity, "as happened 80 years ago in other countries when Spanish Republicans had to go into exile". The vice president and spokesperson of the Consell, Monica Oltra, said that the Valencian society "leaves no one adrift" while the city’s mayor, Joan Ribo, described Italy's decision to turn the vessel away as inhuman.

The migrants aboard the Aquarius fleet spent 20 hours in overcrowded rubber dinghies before being rescued. They have since spent a week aboard the rescue ships in rough seas - with many suffering seasickness. According to the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières, they

Celebrating Armed Forces Day in Orihuela Cathedral rmed Forces Day is an opportunity to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. The event is held annually both in UK and in Spain.

A

of readings and hymns conducted in English and Spanish with musical and choral accompaniment by the Royal British Legion Band in Spain, the Crescendo International Choir and Paul Michael. The readings, in English and Spanish, will be delivered by invited guests.

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion on behalf of District North (Spain) are immensely grateful to the Dean of Orihuela Cathedral for allowing us to celebrate the day by holding our service in the 13th century Orihuela Cathedral.

It is hoped that all branches across Spain, particularly those in District North, will attend the event at which we hope to see as many standards as possible marching at the head of the parade, along the Calle Mayor de RamĂłn de Cajal.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (Mormons) regularly give up their freetime to do community related service projects. For example, last week, in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day nearly half a million Mormons donated blood.

The day was beautiful and the volunteers were in excellent form. An amazing amount of plastic, glass and other refuse was collected. This is the second such event in the last two months, The Leader newspaper exclusively reported on the clean-up in Aguamarina when 180 church members turned up to clean that beauty spot.

Contrary to popular belief, Mormons see blood transfusions and blood donations as a vital part of preserving life in this modern world. Russell M. Nelson (94), the current prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a well-known heart surgeon. Mormons are encouraged to donate blood as often as possible.

On this Saturday’s clean-up almost double the amount of refuse was collected with less people.

The winner, driving a Mk 2 VW Golf, was Norman Gomm with Alan Fullalove second in his MGB GT and Ian Smith third in a Mercedes SLK. The club's next drive will be to Redovan where they will join in the Jaguar Enthusiast's Club celebrations.

Your article re the beach bars. I think the time has come for drastic action to be taken, either by the Valencia authority or even the national government to get rid of the local councillors responsible for the disgraceful situation they have caused. The damage to the tourist industry could be immense, when for the last three years tourism on the Costa has been on the increase. The service during this period has been the best in the past eighteen years in all aspects, catering, toilet facilities, water sports equipment. Time for drastic action. Another major blow for the Partido Popular

L

ess than a year before the 2019 autonomous and municipal elections as the party attempts to recover from its most serious crisis in years and with the convening of the PP congress scheduled for 20 and 21 July, the leadership has now been dealt a further setback during the summarizing of the Gürtel case. In his courtroom summary the judge said that the party, with Francisco Camps at the helm, was financed illegally in the Valencian community. During the 2007 regional elections, and the general elections that took place in the following year, the electoral campaigns were both financed by businessmen who paid many of the party expenses and who later, received profitable contracts

from the Generalitat in exchange. A judge said that the electoral campaigns were financed in such an absolutely irregular way that it was criminal, a statement that is yet another devastating blow for the PP. The Gürtel ruling now confirms that the PP was financed illegally in the elections of 2007 and 2008, a ruling that further weakens the party in the Community and will no doubt stimulate the need for a full internal battle in the coming months. The weight that the current PP leadership in the Valencia Community and in the Alicante Province is having to endure has now become much heavier and harder to lift.

Francisco Camps was the President of the Generalitat for 8 years

British fugitive arrested in Xàbia The National Police have arrested a 36 year old man from the United Kingdom in Xàbia, who was wanted by the authorities for committing several assaults with a knife in a Liverpool bar. The assault began with a simple discussion between two customers which eventually turned into an argument and then a violent attack. The detainee took out a knife and inflicted several cuts on his victim’s face, at which point several other customers came to his aid. But far from calming the situation they too were attacked by the defendant, who was only stopped by a doorman who was able to

remove him from the premises. The initial victim needed more than 100 stitches to his face, leaving him with both physical and mental scars, whilst those who went to his aid suffered slight injuries from the knife. The arrest was carried out by the Judicial Police Brigade of the Provincial Commissariat of Alicante. The agents discovered the fugitive residing in a house in Xàbia, so, following surveillance, he was finally arrested on Tuesday. He has now been placed at the disposal of the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid who will carry out the implementation of the European Arrest Warrant issued by the United Kingdom.

Orihuela closes its Tourist Office on the Coast

A

fuming Sofía Álvarez has closed the Orihuela Costa’s only tourist information office because of a lack of staff. The councillor for tourism took the step on Thursday when she placed a sign on the office door stating, in Spanish and English “this office will be closed due to lack of person. Sorry for the inconvenience. The councillor for tourism explained that the one employee had been moved to Orihuela where she will now be employed in the Cultural department. Ms Álvarez told the press "I warned the Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Human Resources, Rafael Almagro, on many occasions, both verbally and in writing, that if they did not replace the worker in the Tourist Office I would close the facilities and put a poster on the door explaining the reasons, and so I have done." She confirmed that the Office will remain closed until the Council, the mayor and the Human Resources councillor, authorise a replacement member of staff, adding “I am ashamed to be the Tourism Councilor and have to close the office at the very beginning of high season. It is the only Tourist Office on the Coast, and it’s closure will now give completely the wrong image as tourist numbers begin to grow”.

way, "and if it were for me, not only would the office be open in the morning, it would also function in the afternoon and at weekends. I would also open a second office at another location”.

Álvarez said that it is very important to keep the tourist information point open on the Orihuela Costa open, now that the summer season is under-

The councillor also criticized the attitude of the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana "because he gives the impression that what happens on the Coast is not

important and I do not work like that. I give everything for all of the Oriolan residents and visitors, and also for the coast". On Friday CLARO referred to the closure of the tourist office of Playa Flamenca saying that it is just another example of the council’s mismanagement, joining the nefarious bungling of the coun-

cillor for the coast Luisa Boné, that will see the award-winning beaches without seasonal services and beach bars and with the possible loss of the awards next year. The CLARO spokesmen added “the matter is extremely serious and must be remedied immediately. We hope that it is not the result of a 'vendetta' by the mayor with his councillor for Tourism, who we believe is doing a decent job".

“Reaching Out” for Hollywood T

he latest fund raiser from “Reach Out” shop 2 was a ‘Hollywood’ themed evening at the Marina Bar on Thursday. Organized by David & Lorraine Whitney, volunteers and managers of “Reach Out” shop 2, the evening was a resounding success. A delicious two course meal, movie quiz, Oscar ceremony and fabulous raffle, including a special cake raffle courtesy of Bev Jones, the evening ran very smoothly. With singer ‘Rees’ providing his usual slick performance and repertoire of songs it was an evening appreciated by the ‘full house’. A four piece male strip routine took the audience

by surprise and was a highlight of the evening with the guys stripping down to their undies to ‘Rees’s’ version of “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. Rita, Dave and their team at the bar as usual worked very hard to make the event memorable and with their donations of book sales took the evenings takings to a very acceptable 806.66 Euros for the charity. David & Lorraine would like to thank everybody who helped to make this event one of the most memorable on the charity calendar. The question now is “How do we top that?" Watch this space folks!

Samaritans in Spain - You talk, We Listen Maria's story....... TV star, Maria Fowler, 26, (from the TV show 'The Only Way is Essex', has battled with depression for almost two years, and she attempted to take her own life. Maria has sought support from Samaritans and is now helping to raise awareness of its service for people struggling to cope. “I felt like I had everything going for me. I was happy, enjoying being part of TOWIE, and had a great life. "I’ve always battled with depression, but when I was on the show I was so busy I put on a mask to hide my feelings. "When I left the show, my life changed and I wasn’t sure what direction to take. It felt like I was existing, but with no real purpose. "The low point came when some false allegations were printed about me. It destroyed my life, I became insecure and I didn’t know who to trust. "I had no friends or family around me, I was spending a lot of time on my own, and suicidal feelings started entering my head. "One day, my partner and I had a huge row, things

had reached boiling point for me, and I wanted it all to go away. "I felt so desperate. I didn’t want to die, but I didn’t want to live. I felt like a caged animal. "It was a cry for help – I didn’t have anyone to turn to. I attempted to end my life, but thankfully, a call from my friend saved my life as he called an ambulance to help me. Talking to Samaritans was like having a nonjudgemental friend, who had all the time in the world for me, something that is hard to come by in real life, they were a fantastic source of support, I only wish I’d got in touch with them earlier. "I want to turn a negative into a positive and make sure no one else gets to the point where they feel that life isn’t worth living. "It is so important that people talk about their problems, and if things are getting too much, Samaritans is available around the clock.” To Contact Samaritans call Freephone 900 525 100 or email pat@samaritansinspain.com

La Casa Canina will put on a dog agility show to demonstrate different levels of training from an experienced dog through to a young pup just learning how to jump – and go through hoops! Expert agility dog handler, Diego Martinez, will show how it should be done with his champion border collie Enya.

There will be a couple of stalls where you can purchase all things doggy and a range of general items including jewellery.

Following this Danny de Castillo, the acclaimed assistance dog trainer, will then ask his own dog to demonstrate an amazing range of obedience and skills.

Of course the morning would not be complete without a grand raffle which has great prizes including a large basket full of goodies and lots of wine.

You will also get to meet and pet a selection of some of the beautiful dogs that have been aban-

This fun packed morning will delight any dog lovers whilst at the same time introduce everyone to the new website www.Barkinside.es which showcases all the abandoned and rescued animals in their care.

So come along to Tipsy Terrace on the 22nd June and have a great time, everyone will be made welcome.

Los Infiernos Perrera inundated with over 50 pups in a week C ruz Azul Murcia has stepped in to help local charity, Caminando con Ellos (CCE) at Los Infiernos Perrera, who have been inundated with abandoned pups. “We received a desperate plea for help from the charity.” said Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. “The Cruz Azul volunteers all voted to ring-fence some of our donations to help local rescue charities, who work so hard to deal with the problem of abandoned animals, and we were able to make a donation to CCE to help with vet fees.” Although Cruz Azul exists to help pet owners on low incomes with vet fees for their pets, they are also active in helping urbanisations to manage cat colonies, as well as campaigning for no kill policies in local perreras and encouraging people to have their pets neutered to reduce the abandonment problem in the Murcia region. Seven of the pups were left in a box, by a bin, in Torre Pacheco, where they were blindly running about, but they are now safely in the care of CCE and Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters (LIPS). In the past week, Los Infiernos Perrera has also taken

in 8 Galgo puppies with a mum and another mum who came in with one pup, who is also feeding the Galgo babies. As if that wasn’t enough to cope with, a mum with 10 pups of her own and a further ten pups arrived the next day, so CCE and LIPS now have in excess of 50 pups to take care of and find homes for! Some of the pups have had their first vaccination and are looking for loving homes. The biggest problem is that, if they don't get homes when they are little and fluffy, they become adult dogs that stay in Los Infiernos for years. “We have more than 200 dogs to take care of at the perrera and it costs a lot to do that. We have very few volunteers, but we do our best to make sure that they are socialised and walked each week” said a spokeswoman for LIPS. “It’s a constant battle, with people even putting pups in a bag and throwing them over the wall of the perrera, so we desperately need funds to cover food and vet fees” she said. If you can help by giving LIPS a donation or if you want to volunteer or can adopt a dog, please contact: losinfiernosdogs@hotmail.com

Prostate cancer is in every golf club Another of John’s amazing efforts with Sam Vieira and Katie Eyoita

Men over 50 most are most at risk, together with Black men and men with a family history of the disease. One man dies of prostate cancer every 45 minutes in the UK, and that's one for every 3 holes of golf. West Yorkshireman John Brownless has supported Prostate Cancer UK for many years, raising more than £30,000 hosting golf days and completing the Football to Amsterdam bike ride among others. And on Saturday, June 23rd he will help host an event at the impressive Vistabella Golf Club near Torrevieja, Alicante. Brownless, 55, from Haworth, was inspired to get involved having himself been diagnosed with the disease in 2004 after a chat with his doctor on the golf course. Kicking off in 2014, at Keighley Golf Club, John’s annual golf day goes from strength to strength and this is the first year he has staged an event in Spain. “This is a cause close to my heart and I’m constantly amazed by the level of support I get,” said John, who owns a holiday home in the area and has been working with friends David and Debbie Wright and Alison Scammell to set up the event.

Alison sadly lost her father to the disease so has been a key campaigner. “It was a bit daunting thinking about an event in Spain, but the course have been brilliant, and I’m really looking forward to the day. All the four-balls at the event, which kicks off with a 1.30pm shotgun start, have sold out but Brownless has also helped arrange a gala dinner the following day at Las Ramblas Golf Club. The 30 euros event kicks off at 7pm and includes a three course dinner including wine and beer, and there will also be a raffle and auction. For further information contact David Wright on 647 155 457, via ‘The Electrical Shop’, Blue Lagoon, Orhuela Costa by emailing electricalteam@hotmail.com or calling 966 188 169. Also on June, 22nd the Hub Lounge Bar, Villamartin Plaza will further support Brownless by becoming a Men United Arms across the weekend. Prostate Cancer UK also need your help to beat the disease and you can sign up to host your own golf day by visiting www.prostatecanceruk.org/golf or host a Men United Arms via www.prostatecanceruk.org/menunitedarms

Horadada Bowls Club

Country Bowls Club with Jo Richardson

by Irene Graham

Country Bowls welcomed Greenlands club on Wednesday this week in the VCL.

On Monday we were at home to Greenlands Gladiators and with more than a dozen regular team members not available for this match, we knew it would be hard to take on Greenlands Gladiators, and so it proved to be the case as they were too good for us on the day, and ran out worthy winners. Having said that, we can only heap praise on their replacements for their excellent efforts, which at one stage during the match looked like we could achieve an improbable win. Special praise goes to Tracy Paffett and Ken Barber, both new to the club and who, at short notice, made their league debuts so that we would not have to concede points. A couple of others defied injuries that should have prevented them playing to give us the eighteen players required. The match was extremely competitive in spite of the eventual 11 points to 3 defeat, with several matches seesawing back and forth. As an example, the last match to finish looked all over after 16 ends, with Horadada ahead by ten shots, but back came Greenlands with a three and a seven to snatch a draw at the death! Congratulations to our winning trips, John Goddard, Alan Miller and Roy Thompson 23 -12, and to our 'nearly winners', Irene Graham, Ron Odell and John Bailey 21 - 21. Greenlands won by 4 rinks to 1, with one drawn and by 111 shots to 92, so well done to Dave and his team. The next match was Wednesday in the VCL league and this time we were away to San Miguel. The result was much of the same with San Miguel winning 3 rinks and the overall shots gaining 8 points to Horadadas 4. Again thanks to Tracey Parffett and Ken Barber for standing in in our hour of need. Our winning disciplines were: Ladies Singles – Margaret Odell 21 – 15. A bit of toing and froing throughout the match but Margaret managed to pull ahead in the last ends. Well done. Pairs – Roy Thomson and Barry Evans. 16 – 15. A very close match indeed and a few finger nails less, our Guys managed to win by that all important 1 shot. Well played. The shots were 78 for and 93 against. After this week’s results we have dropped to 3rd place in the Hurricane Division with 51 points behind La Marina Pilots who also have 51 points and we play them away next! The VCL League the results are not in for this week at time of writing but it looks as though we might be struggling to hold 3rd place. All to play for next week team. Keep em bowls a rollin’! The 12 members of Horadada BC who were playing in the El Cid Aussie Pairs Tournament did the club proud with the standard of play and results achieved. A huge deserved well done to Jack and Carol Linehan for reaching the semi finals. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information.

El Rancho Bowls Club. This week’s only league match was the Harrier league fixture for the Buckskins at Montemar against their Torro. Alas on the day the Buckskins had a tough match and came away with just the one rink, but sometimes the opposition is just a little too strong for you, such is life! As long as the company is good, you have a good time. Dolly Ford, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 12-21. Lesley Day, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 7-28. Ann Abbott, Bob Day and Richard Lee 13-10. David Wright, Graham Day and Keith Longshaw 7-23. Tony Abbott, Ann Taylor and Jim Taylor 12-20. Janet Wright, Peter Blackburn and Stew Hamill 9-19. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com.

Spirits were high with Country Bowls fielding a good few new players in their first game in this league. Brenda Jiggins and Peter Dix both claimed victory in the ladies and gents singles, while the rinks, trips and pairs went down to a strong Greenlands contingent. Scores were 4 – 8 to Greenlands. Country Bowls have launched their summer programme and are welcoming over 50 people on Friday nights, many of whom are new to bowling, which is an excellent result for the sport as a whole. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, Lounge D and Rogers Monday 11th June - Monte Mar Torros v El Rancho Buckskins We had a stressful hour before the start of the match, as we had to find three replacements bowlers as a result of three different mishaps to team members. When we got underway on a lovely sunny morning we had a great mornings bowling. While the Torros had an important win to keep them top of the league, the Buckskins played there part in an excellent match. The Torros won on five rinks, so well done to everyone for a great performance. Shots Torros 121 – 60 Buckskins, Points Torros 12 – 2 Buckskins Wednesday 13th June - Monte Mar Lords v La Marina On a lovely sunny morning the Lords had a good result against La Marina, winning on three rinks. Tigers VCL stormed to an excellent 10-2 victory over San Luis, putting them within touching distance of the championship of division 3. Sandra Heath (ladies singles), Terry Morgan (mens singles), Mel Highland & Alan Barton (pairs), plus Carol Lowry, Steve Hibberd & Keith Lowry (trips), were the victorious disciplines. An excellent win for the Tigers 10-2 points and 99-85 shots. Quesada Lancasters played away at San Miguel this week. After a hard match there were two winning rinks - Alan Barton, Steve Hibberd, Derek Toozer and Maggie Gray, Peter Farrell, Peter Bradbury - securing The Lancasters 4 points. The Lions are in second position in Division 1 of the VCL chasing hard to catch the leaders. Playing away to Vistabella Vikings, high winds had quite an effect on the bowling. But well done to Chris Brazier, Pearl Houghton & Graham Phillips (Triples) for maintaining their winning record and contributing to the Lions gaining overall shots. The rinks secured a draw, and great effort from the pairs who although well down, came back strongly and were just defeated by the home team. George Carnell played an outstanding game in the mens singles but was beaten on the last end. Carol Broomfield also played a strong game but was unable to overcome the Vikings Ladies singles champion. Thanks to our reserves - this week Del Toozer and Veronica Sale - who were there to support their team mates. VCL Cheetahs played another evening match on Wednesday this week hosting Emerald Isle in an interesting and really enjoyable game. Quesada pairs and trips did the honours winning on their rinks but Emerald Isle won overall with 3 rinks and overall shots so the points were 8-4 to Emerald Isle. This match was swiftly followed on Thursday morning when The Cheetahs and San Miguel Marshals played the re-arranged game after last weeks torrential rain. Winners for the Cheetahs were John Stephenson (singles) Liz Richardson, Stella Jakeman and skip Brian Elliot (Trips) and a draw for the rinks team led by Joe Brinton. The Cheetahs just had the edge winning the shots so ended a great mornings Bowls with a score of 7-5.

First T.M.G.S. hole in one for Lennart at La Marquesa 13 is certainly a lucky number for our Swedish member Lennart Holmberg, today he fulfilled a dream of hitting a hole in one which he did on the par3 11th at La Marquesa. Showing true Swedish character he invited all members to join him with a glass of cava, although he did receive a little help from the Society funds. Alas his final total of 32 points left him just outside of the podium places in his new category (Silver) after scoring 40 points recently at Mar Menor. Nevertheless, well done Lennart. Even the 2’s pot was shared out between 4 members, giving T. Roed and S. Hill with birdies on hole 17, J. Dean managed birdies at hole 5 and 17 each birdie being worth €8. Weather and course conditions were excellent for enjoying a days’ golf with the greens recovering nicely after the recent hollow tinning. This months’ latest addition to the course is a neon sign situated by the first tee, it reminds players to be courteous to fellow players and maintain a good place of play. Last week’s European tour event in Austria saw a new format in place, i.e. the clock; briefly every player was put on the clock for each shot or would receive a penalty of one shot.

Maybe not surprisingly some groups actually managed 18 holes in 4 hours or less, so if they can do it why shouldn’t everyone. Slow play has always been a problem and this shows that it doesn’t have to be. Come guys (and girls) stay close to the group in front and NOT in front of the group behind. Results; N.T.P.’s hole 5 J.Dean, Hole 11 L. Holmberg, hole 15 S. Hill, hole 17 nada. Best guest this week and for the 2nd week running was Mrs. J. Van Der Kooi. That was her 3rd game as a visitor so now she must become a member next time. Bronze; 3rd T. Jones 27 points off a handicap of being 87 years young. Well done Tom. In 2nd place was Tom’s gym slip partner Pearl Sabine with 30 points (age withheld, Tom doesn’t want an investigation into his cradle snatching although Pearl will be eligible for free membership to the Society next year, that’s an exclusive club for over the 80’s) Silver cat:3rd N. WHICH GOLF BALL IS BEST FOR YOU? Even with modern technology the question of which golf ball best suits golfers still applies today. Golfers of all standards see the experts playing with the Titleist ProV1 and assume that that is the ball for them only to see it disappear into the nearest water hazard after one hit or look like it has been on a cheese grater after a few bad shots. Here are a few pointers to the most frequesntly asked questions in respect of which golf ball to use: What is the difference between golf balls? The main difference between golf balls the material used for the cover with cheaper balls using ionomer and more expensive balls using urethane. Why do golf balls have dimples? Dimples on a golf ball create a thin turbulent boundary layer of air that clings to the ball's surface. This allows the smoothly flowing air to follow the ball'ss urface a little farther around the back side of the ball, thereby decreasing the size of the wake. Which Golf Balls are easiest to see? White is of course the most common colour but bright yellow is an excellent alternative for visability against green grass. How long can you keep a golf ball before use? Titleist gof balls can remain in storage for five years or more as long as they are kept indoors away from excessive heat. Which is the best ball for a beginner? Pinnacle soft,Titleist velocity,Callaway soft and warbird,Srixon AD333 or Taylormade burner. Which is the best ball for the Mid-Handicapper? Titleist NXT Tour Srixon Q-Star,Callaway SuperSoft, Bridgestone E6 Soft or Taylormade Project.

(in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs) Which are the best golf balls overall? Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1x,Srixon Z-Star & Z-Star XV,TaylorMade TP5 & TP5x,Callaway Chrome Soft & Chrome Soft X,Mizuno MP-S & MP-X, and Vice Golf Pro & Pro Plus. Every player needs to look for a golf ball that suits them and that could be because of affordability, wear resistance, distance, feel or spin elements. However I am sure that many local golfers will ignore the above information and continue to buy a bag of lake balls from the man from is car boot at the entrance to golf courses. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Los Nietos at Hacienda for June Stableford

Disappointing withdrawals for Gordon Abba Trophy Unfortunate withdrawals due to Dentist, Holidays and Cruises left the turnout for the Gordon Abba Trophy less than ideal. 11 members made up the numbers for the Trophy donated by Gordon, who unfortunately (for us) returned to the U.K. The competition was played on a Medalford basis with the Stableford score on the back nine holes being deducted from the Net Medal score from the front nine holes. Despite my scoring a total of 4 birdies, the consistency of Alan Janes, who scored 12 pars and 6 bogies, was sufficient to win on count back.

Los Nietos Golf society journeyed to Hacienda Riquelme for their June individual Stableford competition. The day started bright and sunny but as the round progressed the clouds did gather and by the time the second group hit the clubhouse it had started to drizzle a bit and then it started ………” the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain “ ! …. And it did! The last few groups had to dash back to the club house without playing holes 17 and 18. No harm done with the scores but some members got very wet indeed….. in fact some could have won the wet tee shirt competition ! The condition of the course was generally in very good condition and verdant; some of the greens were, however , difficult to read for pace as some had just been treated with sand . The courtesy of the golf shop and bar staff was welcoming and helpful. Dave McBernie, with a handicap of 13 for the day, won with a magnificent score of 40 points and also nearest the pin on hole 2 . The runner up with a

steady score of 35 (and didn’t play the last hole because of the rain! ) was Captain Tim. Phil Harris won nearest the pin on 17 and longest drive on 14 and finished joint third with our secretary Mick Lockley ( winner of 2nd shot nearest the pin on hole 16 ) Pat ‘the car’ Hurley won nearest the pin on the 5th and Ken Higgins won ntp on the par 3 hole 15th Alan Mc Nicol receiving his sleeve of golf balls for winning the longest drive on hole 11. Most of us the retired to the Lismo Restaurant in the village for an excellent BBQ, with Spit roasted chicken and all sorts of goodies. Our thanks to Christine and Clive who gave their time to help out and cook some the food. During the proceedings the storm that had beleaguered the last of our game at Hacienda caught up with us at a hitherto dry Los Nietos. It tried to dampen our spirits but didn’t succeed! A great evening. Our next game is at VistaBella on 4th July and promises to be a good turnout once again.

Bright future in store say new Torry regime By Steve Hibberd Torry Army committee met with new Torry owners last week, for a requested questions and answer session. Previous CD Torrevieja president Vicente Boix, has officially handed over the club to a group of ambitious business men, who want only the best for this fallen giant of a club. They wasted no time in replacing PedreĂąo as manager, appointing Manu Sanchez and Pedro Cerdan as his assistant. Both men have had valuable experience at Preferente division level, and are hoping to bring experienced players from previous clubs to the Vicente Garcia Stadium. Only 3 players have been retained from last season - Silver, German and Samuel. Pre season friendlies are planned to start around 23 July, but it is unlikely that these

It makes sense to become a Torry Army member this season more than at any other time, for a 20 percent discount will be applied on all season tickets purchased. Hummel sports wear will proudly be sponsoring all teams connected with Torry, including the newly formed academy.

Manu Sanchez and Pedro Cerdan

A link with Torrevieja branch of Real Madrid supporters club has also been formed, involving 140 keen Spaniards who will hopefully not only become regulars through the turnstiles, but also join the Torry Army. will be played at Vicente Garcia Stadium, due to the twice annual resurfacing of the pitch, which should get underway soon. A temporary stand will be erected, now that the old one has been demolished.

Throughout the season, 2 tickets for every home match will be up for grabs through The Leader, so watch this space!! All in all, optimism within the club is high for the coming season, where promotion is very much on the agenda.

Tea(M) Talk just the brew for Spain coach Hierro By Andrew Atkinson Fernando Hierro, Spain's 2018 World Cup unexpected coach in charge of the national side in Russia in the wake of the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, has high praise of ex England coach Sam Allardyce. "I don't know how he did it," said Hierro, of 'Big Sam', when in charge of Bolton Wanderers. It was Allardyce who signed former Real Madrid star Hierro at Bolton in 2004: "Sam even made sure there was tea available to drink", reflected Hierro. Hierro has found himself in at the deep end in Russia, after the axe swung on Lopetegui, after taking the vacancy at Madrid when replacing Zinidene Zidane, who quit after leading the club to the Champions League trophy win last month. Hierro, who made 21 appearances for Bolton, said: "Bolton had shown an interest in 2003, but I had to sort things out at Madrid.

"When I joined them in 2014 I rejected offers from Mexico, Spain and the USA. I had a desire to do well." Allardyce initially left Hierro warming the bench following his arrival and the Spain coach said: "It was uncomfortable sitting on the bench. "But I never went knocking on the manager's door." Hierro managed to break into the first team line up - and helped Bolton reach Europe - for the first time in the club's history. "I'd wanted to play for a club in England since playing at Wembley at Euro 96," said Hierro. Hierro said: "When I left Bolton I wanted to be remembered as a model professional. "If you are united as a team you can stop any opponent." Hierro will take charge of Spain's World Cup games against Iran on June 20 and against Morocco on June 25, on the back of their thrilling opening 3-3 draw against Portugal on June 15.

Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football Last Tuesday our second away game resulted in a 2-1 defeat at San Fulgencio. It was a very very hot day and we took a good turnout of 12 players for the 8 a side game. We thank Doug for organising this fixture and he was kept busy changing players on and off the pitch, with some lads wilting in the sun. We were well looked after at the local bar after the game, and a second fixture will take place nearer the autumn. Our sponsored shirts looked good at both games, thanks to Gran Alacant Properties, GA Homefinders, Gran Alacant Advertiser magazine, Hispania, and La Paletta Restaurant. We cannot play home games on Gran Alacant as we have no astro turf pitches. There are 11 in Santa Pola so will have to use one of them for home fixtures. We play every Thursday afternoon at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre.

La Salinas Petanca League Charity Mixed Triples 3rd place team, from Peacocks. Eunice Letts, Trevor Kemp and Val Rowe

El Paraiso restaurant, home to Peacocks petanca club, hosted the las salinas petanca mixed triples tournament, in aid of Alzheimers in Torrevieja charity. A steady flow of rain greeted competitors, but just as the first ball was thrown, dark clouds gave way to clear blue sky, and we were all set for a sunny day. All 24 teams from different clubs (involving many different nationalities) throughout the league, played 4 games each. In 6th place were a team from Rojales Thader, comprising of Phyllis Seddon, Laila Lonnqvist and Colin Jefferson who each received a bottle of cava. Peacocks players husband and wife Barry and Izzy Tolson, were joined by Steve Hibberd, and their 5th spot earnt them a bottle of wine. Lakeside Lions team of Benny Norgren plus Borge and Britt Karlson also took home wine for finishing 4th. Also receiving wine, in addition to bronze medals, were another peacocks team consisting of Trevor Kemp, Eunice Letts and Val Rowe. Guardamar team of Fernando Martin, Pascual Rouira and Marlies Tilborgh, had to settle for 2nd place, for which they received a bottle of spirits and silver medals. All the above mentioned teams won 3 of the 4 matches, but the winning team had a 100 percent record. Well done Rojales Thader team of Stuart and Norma Parkway plus Rolf Lonnqvist, who deservedly took home a bottle of spirits and gold medals. The tournament raised 245 euros for Alzheimers charity, which is this years chosen charity. Peacocks petanca club have 3 teams in the Las Salinas league, which is currently nearing the end of the summer league, and 4 teams in the winter league, due to start in October. There is also a regular Tuesday coffee morning roll up, where guests are more than welcome to experience the booming sport of petanca.

Carp R Us Fishing Round five of the Summer Series was fished much closer to home than last weeks venue, the drainage canal near Mercadona in Guardamar. Individuals had reported good bags from this stretch recently but today the fishing was very poor with many dry nets. First was Steve Fell (peg 8) with 3.00kg caught on pole and bread, second was Jeremy Fardoe (peg 5) with 2.82kg using a similar method, third was Roy Buttress (peg 15, pole and maggot) with 2.80kg and fourth Dave Sutton (peg 16, feeder and corn). For the next couple of months we will be able to use the inside pitch as nobody else has booked it. We can then continue playing, out of the summer sun. Our ages range in the 60s and 70s with a few in their 50s. There is no running, no tackling and no physical contact. Come and join us. Ability means nothing. We are nearing 40 weekly sessions since August. If you would like further info email Barry: laneinspain@hotmail.com

UK test for Rojales in La Manga netball tournament Rojales Netball Club took part in the Netball 7s Tournament on La Manga Club last weekend. The event was attended by 40+ teams from the UK.

www.theleader.info

Rojales' first game was against really tough opposition who never really allowed them to get in to the game. It meant Rojales needed to step up in the next one and they worked tirelessly to come away with a 4-4 draw. By the time Rojales went into their last game in their group they were well in to their stride and earned a well deserved 7-4 win. It was on to the knockout stage next. It was a fast paced game with the centre court of Ange, Roni, Zara/Donna moving the ball up towards the shooting partnership of Millie and Wendy. At the other end of the court Claire and Louise put on a great defensive display. Rojales came away winners and the quarter finals beckoned. The quarters turned out to be Rojales last game as they lost and were therefore knocked out of the tournament. Their overall performance throughout was to be commended though, especially as these UK teams are playing competitively 2/3 times a week. The day ended with a presentation dinner and then the party commenced...
