Deposed Prime Minister takes up post in Santa Pola
t the age of 63, as many of us are looking forward to retirement, Mariano Rajoy,
A
who until 3 weeks ago was one of the most powerful men in Europe, has gone back to his former job as the Land Registrar in Santa Pola. Rajoy was ousted as Prime
Minister following a historic vote of no confidence in the Spanish Congress. He subsequently arrived in Santa Pola last Wednesday telling members of the press corps “I have retired from poli-
tics and I am back where I used to be. Life goes on. It is understood that Rajoy will live in the area during the week but he will return to Madrid at weekends. Continued on Page 2

Monday 25th June - Sunday 1st July, 2018 Continued From Page One Former PM returns to day job At the age of 24, prior to launching into politics, Rajoy was the youngest registrar in the country but last Friday, June 15, he tendered his resignation as a deputy in the Lower House and announced that he would request re-entry into the Association of Property Registrars, and seek to return to his former position in Santa Pola. “I come to Santa Pola to stay”, he told his friend, Francisco Gaspar Riquelme, who has occupied the position of Registrar temporarily, for the last 28 years, and with whom he went to eat at a local restaurant in order discuss both his handover and the operation of the Registry.

After then meeting the seven staff who will be working with him on the Registry Office Rajoy retired to the privacy of a back office where he continued his discussions with Riquelme.

His friend told the press that, “as of today (Wednesday) Mr Rajoy is the new occupier of the position,” adding that he had taken possession of the post in accordance with the law.
"He has always been a very normal person," he said, describing his discussions with the former leader during the early hours of yesterday afternoon. Following journalists questions about the future leadership of the Partido Popular, of which Rajoy is still the head, he said "I do not talk about politics with friends". Completely oblivious to any political intrigue, corruption scandals, or other affairs of state, Rajoy left his office at around 2.15pm, and told the press that “I’ve had time to do lots of things.” Half-a-dozen bodyguards protected him as he left for Alicante to catch a high-speed AVE train headed for Madrid. He said that he would be back in Santa Pola next week when he would take over his new post on a permanent basis. At that point he will return to his former life as a civil servant when his days will again focus on issuing documents which relate solely to property ownership, inheritance queries and so forth, in a nine-tofive job that represents bureaucracy in its purest form.

Twenty-Eight Aquarius refugees flee Alicante hostel Many of the refugees were transferred to the Sant Joan Hospital, where they were to undergo tests by forensic doctors, in order to verify their ages.
O
ver a hundred of the refugees from the troubled Aquarius fleet, who landed in Valencia last Sunday, were transported by coach to an Alicante hostel on Monday, where they arrived " tired and happy. Many of them were then transferred to the Sant Joan Hospital, where they were to undergo bone x-rays, examinations and tests by forensic doctors, in order to confirm their ages. The purpose of the tests was to determine if 61 of the boys and girls, all claiming to be
16 years of age and under, are actually the ages they claim. Juvenile prosecutors said that there were doubts about many of the young people who were selected to undergo the tests. The Councillor for Justice, Gabriela Bravo, explained that the tests are necessary to determine the exact age of the children, as their legal status is completely different should they be categorised as youths or children. Of those tested, results showed that at least
twenty of them were in excess of 20 years of age. These have now been transferred to the City of Hope, located in Aldaia, close to Valencia city. This is a comprehensive care centre for those considered to be at risk of social exclusion, and that currently has 164 residents, of which 110 are refugees of 36 different nationalities.
Meanwhile, having arrived at the Alicante hostel on Monday, 28 of the refugees immediately absconded. However, both the National Police and the Police of the Generalitat were quick to respond, managing to locate the majority of the runaways. In total they picked up 25 of the 28 fugitives within just a few hours returning them to the reception centre for further processing. A traffic patrol from the Civil Guard located one walking along the N332 and another four on the road to Las Parras in Villafranqueza. At the time of writing only three are still thought to be at large. But, despite the support provided by the Councillor for Equality, MĂłnica Oltra and the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, not everybody is happy with the placement of the refugee children, with one group of Alicante university students, who previously occupied the rooms allocated to the refugees, kicked out of their accommodation with little notice on Sunday morning. Following complaints they were subsequently transferred to a student residence in San Vicente, where their expenses would be borne by the Generalitat. However, there were a small number of non-Spaniards, who had reserved their accommodation in the centre, and who arrived on Sunday morning, only to be told that their reservations had been cancelled with no alternative offered.

Man abandons children while he visits brothel
A
man was arrested in Alicante after leaving his son and another child in the street for most of the night, waiting for him while he was visiting a
brothel.
Agents from the Local Police found the two youngsters sitting on a pavement and huddled against the side of a building at about 5am on Wednesday morning. When questioned they were found to have been sitting there for almost two hours. The two children aged 12 and 13 were told to wait whilst he was going to see a friend. On his return the man was arrested for a crime of abandonment of minors after which he spent a night in the cells. On Friday morning he appeared before the magistrate Jose Luis de la Fuente, after which he was released with charges. The children were located by agents of the night service of the Local Police attached to the group which tackles gender
violence and minors (Gavid), who were surprised by the presence of the pair in the street and completely alone at five o'clock in the morning. They were in front of a building known to house prostitution services. When questioned by the magistrate the man said that he had left the two young boys in the street because the building was a bad influence and not a place where the children should be. However according to the testimony given by the lady in charge of the premises, the man first appeared with his son and the other child with the idea of them accompanying him inside, but they were all refused entry as a result of which he left them outside and entered alone. The children were taken to the homes of their respective grandmothers while the detainee was taken to the police station after being examined at a health centre.

Is the Costa Oriolana looking forward to a catastrophic summer? T
he Orihuela Costa Tourism Office reopened on Thursday after the councillor, Sofía Álvarez, had closed it down at the end of last week because of the withdrawal of staff to fill a vacancy in Orihuela City. The councillor said that she had warned the mayor and Human Resources a month and a half ago but there was no positive response from the councillor responsible, Rafael Almagro. She therefore took the step to close the office following the expiry of the incumbent’s temporary contract stating at the time “I am ashamed to have to close the office at the beginning of the main tourist season. It gives completely the wrong impression to our visitors.” She said that she was then surprised that the Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, ordered the office to be reopened but failed to send a copy of the instruction to her, directing it only to the local media. Meanwhile the Councillor for Human Resources said that Álvarez failed to go through the proper channels so he took no action. “There are procedures to be followed” he added! While arguments over the staffing of the Tourist Office caused some embarrassment to the Orihuela Council, Mar Ezcurra (Ciudadanos), the councillor for Youth, has also reproached the Human Resources Department saying that she too has been left without employees and she no longer has anyone who can endorse contracts, which leaves her programming of summer activities up in the air. "I've complained to the mayor on a number of occasions, but he shows as much disinterest as possible," she said. The PSOE were also very quick to make political gain claiming that ‘internal wars’ within the Partido Popular are seriously affecting the government’s management of the Orihuela Costa In a statement by Councillor María García she says "The internal
quarrels of the PP are affecting very seriously Orihuela Costa and are endangering the image and the future of the municipality as a tourist destination."
Sofía Álvarez reopening the Tourist Office on Tuesday after the post was reinstated
She accuses the Orihuela government of damaging the Costa Oriolana and all "because the party is more interested in blaming each other than of managing. Let the media fights stop and start looking for solutions now.” García says "it is evident that they are not working for Orihuela, but that they are more worried about their own political futures. However, their decisions affect the welfare of thousands of residents and the image of our municipality. We do not care about their fights but, while they are going on, their management is disastrous. It is intolerable that they complain about problems but fail to offer solutions.” The councillor added that “residents are already tired of empty promises, and after two budgets, the sale of land and budget modifications, they have still not seen results. After three years of mandate, the complaints are the same: lack of cleaning, dumping of garden waste, old and broken containers, litter bins constantly overflowing. Neither do coastal residents have transportation to connect the urbanisations, or cultural and festive events, there are missing pavements and pedestrian accesses and much more". The worst of all, according to Garcia, is that "the dissatisfaction of residents is spreading to tourists who come on holiday because of the lack of basic services, a shortage of leisure events and, above all, the beach bars still remain closed.” So what we are going to offer to the tourists? How are we going to
compete with other holiday venues where there is service on the beaches, leisure activities, transportation and places to visit? It is looking increasingly likely that this summer season is going to be catastrophic, but the worst thing of all is that all of these bad decisions will damage the future image of the city as a tourist destination and consequently the trade of its restaurants, its businesses, shops and hotels.

Be alert to early signs of Road Rage says GEM ROAD SAFETY and breakdown cover specialist GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging drivers to protect themselves by being alert to early signs of road rage. The warning follows release of disturbing dashcam video appearing to show an angry driver in the West Midlands shunting a fellow motorist and causing a high-speed crash. GEM has identified a few steps (taken from its ‘Courtesy on the Road’ leaflet) that will hopefully reduce the risk for a driver of being the target of someone else’s aggression: 1 Keep calm and show restraint. Every journey brings the risk of frustration and conflict. Make a pledge to be patient. Avoid using your horn or making gestures in anger. 2 Avoid competition and resist the desire to ‘get even’. If the standard of someone else’s driving disappoints you, don’t attempt to educate or rebuke them. 3 Don’t push into traffic queues. If you wait and clearly signal, you won’t wait long before another drive lets you in. But they don’t like being forced into giving way. 4 Say thank you, say sorry, Courtesy encourages co-operation on the road. If you make a mistake (and we all do!) or perhaps cut things a bit fine, then a gesture of apology avoids confrontation and helps defuse anger. 5 Move away from trouble. If you feel seriously threatened by
another driver, then Just drive and Keep Calm ensure your car doors locked and drive (at legal speed) to the nearest police station or busy area (petrol station forecourts are ideal). Use your mobile phone to alert the police. Pressing the horn repeatedly or continuously is likely to deter a potential attacker. Neil Worth concludes: “We encourage drivers to leave plenty of time for their journeys, which means they can feel calm and in control at the wheel. Stress can lead to risk taking, and this in turn increases the likelihood of aggressive incidents. “We also urge drivers to avoid becoming involved in situations they recognise as dangerous or risky. If you’re worried about another driver who may be in danger, then stop and call the police.” Free copies of GEM’s Courtesy on the Road leaflet are available for from http://www.motoringassist.com/the-gem-story/leaflets/ Follow GEM on Twitter @MotoringAssist for the latest industry news.

Now in its third generation, the all-new Kia Ceed – designed, developed, engineered and built in Europe – strengthens Kia’s presence in the European C-segment with a mature and athletic new design, innovative new technologies, and a more engaging drive. Since the first-generation Kia cee’d started production at Kia’s new Slovakian manufacturing facility in December 2006, more than 1.28 million units have been built. A new naming format – cee’d becomes Ceed – consolidates its reputation as a car for the Community of Europe, with European Design. More than 640,000 of the second-generation model were built between 2012 and 2018. As it enters its third iteration, the Ceed is expected to account for an even greater proportion of Kia’s European sales. Like its predecessors, the new model has been designed, developed and engineered in Frankfurt by Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams. It is manufactured at the brand’s production facility in ?ilina, Slovakia, alongside the Kia Sportage and Kia Venga.
Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe, comments: “After more than a decade on sale, the Kia Ceed continues to underpin the brand’s consistent growth across Europe. Like its predecessors, the new model has been designed and engineered exclusively for European buyers, fine-tuned thanks to the feedback from a growing Kia customer base. More than 1.3 million Ceed vehicles have been manufactured here since 2006, and the new model builds on everything that owners loved about earlier generations. “The Ceed offers a contemporary, recognisable design, something which has been a key strength for the model since its inception. Advanced new technologies make the Ceed more comfortable, convenient to use and safe. Meanwhile, a range of new engines and European-tuned ride and handling will make it more enjoyable and engaging to drive. And Kia’s unique seven-year warranty provides unrivalled reassurance to customers about the quality of their new vehicle.” The Ceed five-door hatchback and Ceed Sportswagon goes on sale in the UK on 1 August.

any people suffer hearing problems as they get older, but there is now no need to suffer in silence. Mr Gary Hagerty of Apple Hearing & Healthcare is committed to bringing the clarity and volume back to sufferers on the Costa Blanca & Costa Calida. Your overall health & wellbeing can be linked to your hearing health. Untreated hearing loss is connected to many other health conditions. You also lose your mental sharpness. If your brain must work harder to comprehend what it is listening to, it loses brain capacity for other routine tasks, like “where did I put my keys” etc. Seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia than those who retain their hearing. Adults over 50, with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety and paranoia than peers who wore hearing aids. People with mild hearing loss are 3x more likely to have a history with falling. Heart disease, stroke & diabetes have all been related to hearing loss, with sudden hearing loss being an indicator of a forthcoming stroke in many cases. Some studies have also linked untreated hearing loss to many conditions, fatigue, social withdrawal, impaired memory & ability to learn new tasks. Hearing loss also reduces your alertness & increases the risk to your personal safety. If you feel you might be suffering from hearing loss, it is very
important to have your hearing tested. The sooner you get hearing aids, the better, because it reduces further hearing loss. Aids can have multiple programs and you can choose which program depending on the environment. Don’t let your hearing affect your body & mind as well. Let us at Apple Hearing & Healthcare & Mr Hagerty help you. Mr Hagerty has more than 20 years’ experience and esteemed qualifications as a fully registered hearing aid dispenser. Filming of Terminator 6 in Cataral Catral Industrial Estate will be the location for the shooting of a number of scenes in the filming of Terminator 6 The poligono has been chosen as the setting to shoot some of the scenes from the movie which will be directed by Tim Miller and produced by James Cameron and David Ellison. This was confirmed by the mayor, Pedro Zaplana, on Friday. Zaplana said that the production company made contact with the city council a few weeks ago, suggesting that they wanted to shoot some of the scenes from the new film in the industrial estate of San Juan. They said that it was "ideal" for what they had in mind. Once provisional agreement had been reached the company applied for authority to close a number of streets during the days scheduled for site preparation
and for filming The producer also contacted owners of the warehouses on the industrial estate to rent some of the warehouses to store all the materials as well as to set up a site office. The mayor said that it is an important event for the municipality since it is a film that has will be seen at a national and international level. He also highlighted the economic impact for the locality since the producer is using catraleñas companies to carry out some of the preparatory works for setting the scenes. Filming is scheduled to begin during the first half of July. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, although it is unknown if the stars will travel to the Vega Baja.
Poligono San Juan, where filming will get underway next month.
Firefighters for Pilar during summer months Emergency deputy, Jaume Lloret, announced last week that the towns of Pilar de Horadada (Vega Baja) and Santa Pola (Baix Vinalopó) will each have a detachment of firefighters from July 15 to September 15. The units will consist of a corporal and three firefighters with a vehicle for 12 hours a day, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and will attend outbreaks of fire that take place in the areas around their respective municipalities. The deputy stressed that they "are necessary during the summer of the increase in population and, as a consequence, a notable increase in traffic density. It is thought that the firefighters will be located with the Policia Local as in previous years.
Minister announces removal of motorway tolls The president of Benidorm’s Hotel Association, Toni Mayor, has expressed his satisfaction with the announcement from the Minister of Development, José Luis Ábalos, that he will eliminate the AP7 toll as it enters the holiday town but he has asked that it be moved elsewhere ‘to avoid saturation’. Hoteliers believe that freeing traffic from the current toll road will fill it with heavy traffic (trucks) and complicate the movement of vehicles, which will cause great discomfort for tourists. He has said that a "symbolic" toll should be applied in the section Tarragona-Castellón, to avoid the saturation of the road by lorries and trucks. The hoteliers fear that it’s removal will attract far more heavy
vehicles to the motorway but if it were moved elsewhere they would still be deterred from it’s use, while tourists traveling from Alicante and Valencia would still pay in order to travel on a decongested highway. In an interview published by El Pais, the minister announced that the Government will remove the tolls on the motorways whose 50-year concession ends between 2018 and 2021. His decision directly affects the AP1 between Burgos and Armiñón (Álava), a stretch of 84 kilometers, whose concession expires on November 30, and the AP-7, between Alicante and Tarragona, and the AP-4, between Seville and Cádiz, where the concessions end on December 31, 2019.
637 227 385 WHY CALL CANCER A DISEASE? ADVERTISING HOTLINE
LEADER
I have just read an article on Prostate Cancer in the Leader Newspaper it has left me very annoyed. The article was by John Brownless who is a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer UK in which he refers to the illness as a disease. I had prostate cancer this year and was operated on at the University Hospital in Torrevieja. I got the ‘all clear’ last week. The article says that men over 50 are at risk, together with black men. I consider that to be racist. John is coming over to Spain on 23 June to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, not Spain. I rank Prostate Cancer UK and they are investigating his article, however when he arrives at Vistabella on Saturday to attend his golf fundraiser I will be meeting him to tell him that cancer is not a disease. One of my friends also read the Leader article and said to me “I didn’t know that you had a disease.” I want the Leader to print this letter so that people will know the truth. It is cancer, not a disease. Maybe Prostate Cancer UK should change their name to Prostate Disease UK.

ocated on the main Orihuela-Torrevieja road Bigastro has done and, is continuing to do, everything to ensure that it has lots to offer the local community and the visitor alike. It is ideally situated as the centre of the triangle formed by Murcia, Torrevieja and Elche and, as such, has an important influence on the area. In common with many other towns and villages of the Vega Baja, Bigastro has had a colourful history and did not really have its own independence until the 18th century when it ceased to come under the influence of Murcia. Also of the 18th century is the beautiful Church of Our Lady of the Belen. It is worth seeing from the outside as it stands proudly in the main town square, but the interior is truly magnificent. However note the church is closed during the siesta hours. Music and musicians are very important to the people here and a new auditorium has been built in the main centre specifically for the purpose of holding musical concerts and festivals. To underline their love of music there is an impressive statue in the town square depicting a harp with a scroll carrying the words of pride in and love of their town. Bigastro is twinned with two other towns in countries within the European Union, Cisano Sal Neva in Italy and Le Vigan in France and the town plays host to visitors from both of these towns and enjoys playing its part in promoting the European Union. It also welcomes and offers the visitor the opportunity to enjoy many open air activities and has purpose built recreation areas for these purposes which are situated against the backdrop of the mountains.
Arts and craft workshops, puppet theatre, hair braiding and lace making are just some of the activities taking place within the centre of the town. For the more adventurous there is an organised horseback trip through the countryside surrounding Bigastro and organised walks including a countryside walk, a tour of the centre and a walk through areas of natural interest. Add to this the tasting of ecological products and it is a fair for everyone

Not forgetting of course that for those not wanting to sample some of the local dishes there is also a full range of more traditional dishes on offer in the many of the bars and restaurants. La Pedrera protected parkland is one location where everything is provided to ensure that there is something for everyone. There are camping sites, a swimming pool, an impressive play area for children, barbeques, undercover seating, practice golf and a restaurant, all there to be enjoyed. It also allows for the walker to take a stroll around the area to see at first hand the flora and fauna. In addition there is a cycle track surrounding the area for the enthusiast. Three such intrepid cyclists said that they regularly cycled to Bigastro to enjoy the facilities. Providing for children is very important here and one square within the centre of the village has play equipment and is fenced to allow children to play safely whilst their parents sit and chat with friends. In October of each year the townspeople hold an Autumn Fair and this not only involves the local population but also allows foreign residents the chance to play their part in contributing to the success of the event. It is normally a two day event held around mid-October and many events are organised for the enjoyment of everyone. There are films, musical concerts, dance performances and even an ecological picnic for the children.

Excavation of Punta Prima Bunker Cyclists raise 2700 euro for Pink Ladies
F
or the last ten days a specialised company, hired by real estate company Gomendio, has been working on an archaeological excavation in Punta Prima amongst the remains of the old Carabineros
barracks. They have been concentrating their efforts on an underground anti-aircraft bunker, dating from the Spanish Civil War with an area of more than thirty metres. The aim is to conserve the bunker, and other military installations, some dating Mid-nineteenth century with the possibility, should the findings be considered significant, of establishing a small archaeological museum.
Approximately 75 people took part in the "Bike for Life 2018 which started and finished at the Olympia Pool and Garden Bar, Mil Palmeras on Saturday, was followed by Paella and an afternoon of entertainment, No Limit duo and Johnny Scott The route was about 10km, starting at The Olympia Bar Mil
Palmeras, through Lo Monte camp site and on to Bar UK Pilar where there was a stop for liquid refreshments. It was then back to The Olympia for the start of the post-ride activities which included an aqua disco in the pool. Thank you to David from Costa Blanca Bike Hire for all his support, to the marshalls, the Policia

Locale and to all the staff at The Olympia Bar. Many more people arrived during the afternoon where they continued to raise funds through additional sponsorship, raffle, tombola and donations.
The site consists of the remains of the Carabineros barracks located just above the Punta Prima esplanade, with two cisterns in the ground, as well as an underground bunker and a sentry box that overlooks Punta Prima beach. In recent years such discoveries have often been destroyed so the authorities are especially keen to see the Punta Prima site conserved.
Two arrested in Torrevieja for car theft Torrevieja Civil Guard has arrested in two Chilean men, aged 34 and 47, for the theft of two cars valued at 22,000 euros, and of a crime of belonging to a criminal group. They have been charged on two counts of theft although another 13 are still being investigated. Both have been detained in prison awaiting trial. After visiting his bank in the town of Bigastro, a man was returning home in his vehicle when he realised that he had one of his tyres was flat. As he pulled in to change the wheel two men stopped to ask him for directions. While he spoke to one, the other stole a briefcase in which he had just collected 6,000 euros from the bank. He was the victim of a crime known as the "Peruvian method" whereby the offenders had punctured the tyre
Not everybody chose to do the ride on their own
whilst he was busy in the bank. The victim, reported the theft to the Civil Guard in Jacarilla. Fortunately he was able to describe their vehicle and it’s registration details which was traced to an address in Torrevieja. Just two hours after the original theft the pair were under arrest. Inside their vehicle the Guardia found two mobile phones, two brand-name backpacks, several T-shirts, caps, glasses, and most significantly, a map of the Vega Baja on which they had recorded details of previous crimes and the routes that they had used to escape. The Guardia are now investigating 13 similar thefts in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia, as well as an attempted robbery of 16,000 euros in the town of Aspe on June 7 this year.
In total the event raised over 2,500 euros for Maria and the Pink Ladies/Panthers on behalf of the AECC early detection cancer charity. Thank you to everyone who took part for their generosity and support.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

vive the hottest or coldest of climates. Lentils originated in central Asia and have been eaten since prehistoric times and are one of the first foods known to be cultivated, since seeds dating back 8000 years have been found in archaeological sites in the Middle East. Archaeologists even discovered traces of lentils buried with the dead in Egyptian pyramids. The humble lentil had reached mythical status and was praised for its ability to enlighten the mind, even in the afterlife. In Catholic countries, such as Spain and the Canary Islands, lentils have long been used as a staple food during Lent.
A
Lentil stew is a popular dish in the Canary Islands, and often served with potatoes, chorizo and vegetables. I am also told that the addition of garlic croutons and red Canary wine together with crusty bread makes a comforting and wholesome dish, and best found in many of the small, traditional family-run restaurants on the islands.
In one photograph, the great grandparents of one student are shown threshing lentils, which were grown on the island. Lentils are usually regarded as one of the world’s healthiest foods and it was interesting to see that they were grown and harvested in Lanzarote, as well as the other Canary Islands.
Lentils do not need to be soaked before cooking, have multiple uses in the kitchen, and their flavour enhances any vegetable or meat ingredient. It is no wonder that they have been a treasured foodstuff since early times.
Long before the Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands, people used the rich, fertile earth to grow a range of subsistence crops, which included lentils. The lentil is one of the oldest and hardiest foods in the world, and there is no legume more resistant to arid land than the lentil. It needs very little water to grow and can sur-

n interesting photographic exhibition in Lanzarote caught my eye this week. The exhibition, which was presented by local students, brought together 300 photographs from the family albums of their grandparents and great grandparents, which reflected life on the island in the last century.
The island of Lanzarote is just sixty miles off the coast of the Sahara. It is a dry and volcanic island, with six to eight inches of rain in a good year and much less during a drought; both this and its volcanic geology became this island’s destiny. Serious problems for islanders were caused by volcanic disasters. As with all the Canary Islands, such conditions determined the crops that could be grown to ensure survival in sometimes wretched economic and climatic conditions. One of the answers was to be lentils.

As a vegetarian for many years, I have long been aware of the high nutritional properties of the humble lentil. They are an excellent source of cholesterol-lowering fibre, as well as having an ability to manage blood sugar levels following a meal. Lentils contain seven of the most important minerals, including Bvitamins and protein, and with virtually no fat. Indeed, just a cupful of cooked lentils will set you back around 200 calories, so they are great for anyone on a diet. The fibre content helps to overcome digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and prevents constipation. There are also huge benefits to the heart; according to food intake studies, lentils were associated with an 82 per cent reduction in risk from heart attacks due to their fibre, as well as from the significant amounts of folate and magnesium. Lentils are rich in iron and,
unlike red meat, are not rich in calories or fat, which makes them ideal for those who require increased levels of iron, including growing children and adolescents. I am very fond of pasta dishes, but try to avoid eating them too often, because they can be very fattening. I have recently discovered pasta made entirely from lentils, which can now be easily purchased from some of the major supermarkets. At last, I can enjoy pasta without worrying about the calories. This one old photograph of a couple threshing lentils on this beautiful island reminded me of the immense value of the humble lentil, which can be rightly called “an ancient crop for modern times”. If you haven’t yet eaten a lentil dish, or used them within a meal, I recommend that you do. As for me, I’m off to enjoy a lentil bake and a glass of red Lanzarote wine for lunch. Elche fundraiser for Successful Summer Children’s outings fair for Age Concern The recent charity night at El Paraiso Resaurant, in Guardamar, raised 869 euros for children at the Elche Home. It will be spent on visits to the cinema, museums, aquapark and similar activities during the 3 months long summer holiday. The children are well aware that all these donations come from the ex-pat community, and are so very grateful. Once again, owners, Nico Castany and Virginia Diez, laid on a lovely meal and excellent service, and Johnny & The Roadhogs kept the dance floor full all night. A great night, with many patrons ordering tickets for the next charity event straight away. On Wednesday, 11th July, we'll be doing it all again in aid of The Stroke Support Association. Another fabulous night's entertainment is guaranteed with The Best of British, reminding us of all the top hits from the 60's and 70's. Tickets are available now from El Paraiso; The Card Place in Benimar, Post Room Benijofar and REZ cafe bar in Quesada. At just 10 euros, this represents excellent value. n Saturday 16th June Age Concern held their annual Summer Fair at their centre in La Siesta. People of all ages visited and strolled around the car park and grounds browsing the many stalls selling clothes, jewellery, plants, bric-a-brac, cakes, electrical items and mobility aids. Resting under shady umbrellas they enjoyed a welcome drink and delicious homemade scones and watched a fabulous display of Morris Dancing and the Alpengold Oompah Band play a selection of songs. Inside the centre there were many fundraising opportunities for visitors to win a whole host of prizes. The guess name of the Teddy competition created a lot of fun and his name was Sidney. Tombola, the Treasure Trail got visitors scratching their heads to guess the secret location, another bric-a-brac stall, guess the amount of bottle tops in the jar, of which there
were 551 and the winner guessed 550, a very close guess. Two gala raffles brought a huge amount of interest as the prizes were fabulous. Francisco won an enormous basket of goodies including spirits, wine, food, chocolates, tin stuff and more. The grand raffle had 21 prizes and the first prize of 200 euros worth of coach travel was won by Tony Harrison. This celebratory 20th anniversary year Summer Fair for Age Concern raised 2,7,00 euros. Funds raised will go to help the caring and welfare requirements of the over 50’s in our area. If you want to become a volunteer for Age Concern why not pop into our centre any morning Monday – Friday between 10.00 – 1.30pm. at Calle Paganini, La Siesta, have a coffee, meet the team and find out how your skills or knowledge can be put to good use helping to care for less fortunate people than ourselves.

Perfect weather all day but no excitement T
he weather on June 17th was perfect for the SAMM race competitors, 8 to 10 knot ENE winds with few shifts or gusts but this lead to two races with little excitement and no incidents.
Numbers are still reducing slightly as more people leave Spain for the summer, resulting in 9 competitors in 6 boats starting the first race over a triangular course forced upon them when one of the marks broke free from it’s anchor whilst being positioned. It was a close start for the 5 lap morning race. Shoestring Tres led followed by The Laser Radial, Topaz Duo, Quba, Shoestring Uno and Sirocco who was last across the line 1 min and 36 secs after the signal. As the race progressed the boats gradually spread out but there were some good tussles for position between the Radial and Quba. Sirocco was lapped by Tres during lap 4 and the Radial and Quba finished just 6 secs apart. The winner after handicaps were Tug Wilson and Jack Moss on Tres, second the Quba only 26 secs behind and third Sirocco just 33 secs later. As the wind had dropped to 6-7 knots, the Race Officer increased the afternoon race to 6 laps. Lesley Singleton joined the fleet on her Topper, but Sirocco did not compete. The 6 boats again had a very close start, except for the Laser Radial which was delayed by a rigging problem and finally started a whole lap behind. Again Tres led for the whole of the race but this time did not build such a commanding lead so lost out once the corrected times were calculated to finish third behind the first placed Quba of John Down and second placed Uno. Lesley had retired after lap five so did not finish, a shame because she would have probably been third in her first race in a single hander. With just one race day (two races) remaining in the season there is only 1 point between first and second placed boats and 0.25 points between third and forth.
Shoestring Tres won the morning session but could only finish 3rd after lunch

Joaquin & his team at Vista Bella have assisted enormously, along with Robin and the staff in the clubhouse, who made sure that all golfers were fed and watered before and after their busy golfing day! Following registration Richard Morgans from No Grow Grass set up a putting competition to get the day started. 100 € was presented to the best score. Adrian Rudge then spent some time conducting a golf clinic, the consensus being that it was an extremely valuable session. 23 teams then had a 1.15pm shot gun start with doubling up on Holes 3, 5, 10, 14 &18. It was lovely and sunny, quite hot and at times very windy. There were a few balls that drifted into the sand and the water and the occasional tree got in the way, but otherwise the 92 players had an enjoyable golfing experience. A huge thanks has to go to all the sponsors of the holes: No Grow Grass, PJ´S Rent A Car, Chemies Lounge, Maria & The Pink Ladies, Ken & Aileen Carine, Gossip Bar, Rioja, Bob Chambers, Spain Property Shop, La Fuente, Welcome Estates, The Hub, Villa Martin, Gleam Team. Hole 11, sponsored by EURONICS, The Electrical Shop at Blue Lagoon, was a competition hole where golfers paid 10 € and swung like they´ve never swung before to get a HOLE IN ONE and win themselves a 43" LG Smart TV - on this occasion the tv was not won which resulted in 100 € being given to nearest the pin
And on to the winners: First Prize of a Golf Cart Bag and a trophy, sponsored by Euronics, went to Tony Smale and his team, well deserving winners. Second Prize of a T Shirt and Golf Towel, sponsored by Albatross Golf, went to John Brownless and his team. Third Prize of a Golf Cap and Box of Balls sponsored by Prostate Cancer UK went to Richard Morgans and his team. Back at the club house, John Brownless, an ambassador for PC UK, gave the golfers a short presentation. One of the main things that he spoke about, and very much the object of the day’s competition, was awareness. He said that Prostate Cancer can be detected by a very simple blood test (have you booked one yet?) Thank you so very much to all the golfers and their family and friends, plus all the background helpers. It was a long but enjoyable day with lots of laughs. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle. There were over 22 won by participants. Extra thanks also has to be given to Tony Smale and all the members of San Miguel GS who not only entered 2 teams but also very generously donated their Blob Tin funds of 500 € boosting the day’s total to an amazing 4806 € for the Prostate cancer charity. Sunday the golfers changing out of their shorts and shirts and into fine attire where they enjoyed a Charity gala dinner at Las Ramblas golf club. A report on the evening’s event plus the final figures will be provided next week. Thanks again to everyone for their support – it was absolutely tremendous
San Javier Golf Society 2018 President s Trophy Pairs better ball competition at La Serena on Wednesday 20th June By David Archer Many thanks to our illustrious President, Mr Barry Butterworth for hosting his annual trophy competition at La Serena. Barry provided all the silverware and prizes and a full capacity turnout demonstrated the esteem in which he is held by the members of the society. Well into his 80's Barry still plays regularly with us and his trophy is always keenly contested by the membership. Perfect weather and the course at La Serena being (as usual) in great condition, led to some excellent results. The winners of the 2018 President's Trophy were Ty Williams and Paul Newman with 49 points, second were Adrian Sinclair and John McCay with 48, third were Bob Gallard and Dave Farrington with 38 and fourth came Ian Price and Danny
Scott on 46. Nearest the pins were won by David Archer, Dave Farrington. Gerry Frame and Barry Beale. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll over to our next game. We’ve reached the summer solstice and the heat moves up another notch – where’s that breeze when you need it? Fortunately for some of us, the leagues are nearly finished. South Alicante Summer League: Monday 18th June SL Wellingtons home v Quesada Blenheims, had a good result, shots 119-92, points 10-4. Winners: Helen Hammond, Ray Pollock, Scott Malden 18-16, Margaret Morrison, Sab & Russell Marks 28-9, Bob White, William Holtham, Vic Slater 16-14, Sheila Cammack, replaced by Jan Pocock, Brian Pocock, Phil Morrachan 26-13. The Wellingtons are at the top of Spitfire league with 73 points, with Quesada Blenheims on 69. SL Hercules had an unbelievably close result away v El Rancho, 7-7, shots 97-97. Winners: Dennis Jackson, Ray Watmough, Ralph Jones 19-10, Ian Ross, Ken Dullaway, Les Bedford 24-14, Chris Jackson, Bill Webb, Brenda Brown 1612. Hercules are 2nd in Harrier league on 53 points behind Monte Mar Torro on 59, so all to play for last match v MM Torro! Wednesday 20th June VCL: SL Falcons away v San Miguel Sherrifs, a good result, 8-4, shots 86-83. Winners: Singles – Kath Reid 21-14, Ian Kenyon 21-20, Rinks – Margaret Morrison, Jan & Brian Pocock, Russ Marks 21-7. Falcons still in 1st place on 81 points, ahead of Quesada Lions, 71. SL Hawks home v La Siesta had a very positive result; 8-4, just snatching the shots 77-76. Our Pairs, Les Bedford & Charlie Marigold, were always in control, winning 26-11. Our Rinks; Kath Waywell, Ken Dullaway, Ian Ross & Brenda Brown had a real nip and tuck match. Going into the last end 11-12, and 1 down in the head, Brenda, with a well judged shot, took out shot wood perfectly to hold 2 for another win. Our Trips; Dennis Jackson, Ralph Jones & Barry Edwards had to work extra hard in the heat with 3 dead ends courtesy of La Siesta. They had a real game of 2 halves, all square 6-6 after 9 ends but then they took control winning 20-11 and their 2 shots on the last end were just enough to take the over-all shots. A real team effort by the HAWKS who are currently 3rd on 75 points, still chasing Emerald Isle Earls on 82; it should be an interesting last match. Congratulations to Quesada Tigers Div 3 winners on 103 points. Club website: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com or contact June Jones, Captain: 691 903 773.
El Rancho Bowls Club Monday found the Buckskins playing host to San Luis Hercules on a hot day that started without a breath of wind, which as always was followed by just a touch of breeze, but as we know that’s all it takes to alter your bowling line. The match ended as a draw with 3 rinks and 97 shots each, it always makes you think of your stray woods that would have earned you the extra shot and hence the extra point, but alas it could have been any shot by any player. Dolly Ford, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 26-15. Lesley Day, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 12-16. Ann Abbott, Bob Day and Malc Elmore 14-24. David Wright, Graham Day and Keith Longshaw 1610. Tony Abbott, Ann Taylor and Jim Taylor 19-13. Janet Wright, Peter Blackburn and Malc Sykes 10-19. On Weds El Rancho entertained Emerald Isle Earls in their VCL match and continuing with the positive selection system of playing all bowlers in differing positions for experience. El Rancho took the pairs and rinks, whilst losing both singles and trips, but a good effort all round against a strong opponent. Ladies singles: Shirley Edwards 15-21. Gents singles: John Skipper 8-21. Pairs: Jane Hamill and Richard Lee 16-13. Trips: Ron Edwards, Stew Hamill and Rob Clark 5-29. Rinks: Bob Easthope, Sheila Cooper, Jean Bagwell and Carolyn Harris 15-13. For details contact Brian Taylor on 965 07 7093 or briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966 77 4316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com.
Country Bowls Club with Geoff Paylor The ‘Badger’s’ entertained Monte Mar on Monday who were lying at the top of the division. A solid team game resulted in a great result from the ‘Badger’s’, winning on four rinks and narrowly getting the overall shots by 99 points to 95. 10 points to the ‘Badger’s’ and 4 to Monte Mar. Winning rinks were Geoff Eggleton, Graham Richardson and Peter Dix. 19 – 8. Brenda Jiggins, Niel West and Geoff Paylor 18 – 9. Lynne Bryce, Derek Jiggins and Andy Bryce 19 – 18. Dean Webb, John Hassell and John Mallet 19 – 14. Well done to the ‘Badger’s’. On Wednesday, there was no such victory for Country Bowls ‘Herons’ playing against the strong squad from San Miguel. The ‘Deputies’ were ‘on fire’ and resulted in an excellent score. The ‘Herons’ won on one rink thanks to Brenda Jiggins, gaining 2 points and while John Mallet and John Hassell made a good fight with the pairs they finally went down 15 – 18. The rinks and trips went down easily although they put up a good fight. All in all a pleasant and friendly match on a hot sunny morning. This Monday we were away to La Marina Pilots who are 2nd top in the Hurricane Division. Save for the last four or five ends in the last three matches it could all have been so different! After thirteen ends we were leading or drawing on four rinks, but with La Marina maintaining their challenge, we eventually capitulated, and won only 1 rink. The successful team were Carol Linehan, Ken Barber and once again Roy Thompson, who won by 23 - 11. Roy has been on a roll this season, and has shown the rest of us how to do it. Anyway, La Marina took the spoils by five rinks to one, the overall shots by 114 to 92, and the overall match result by 12 points to 2. Thanks to Paul and his team for their hospitality, friendliness and sportsmanship, it was an excellent morning's bowling. We are holding 3rd place in the table at the moment and with two matches left to play we really need to finish up the way we started and that is with a win. Next match was Wednesday in the VCL and we were at home again to La Marina. This was not a good result for us on our home ground. Our 1 winning team was the rinks: Tracey Paffitt, Linda Hier, Roy Thomson and Bryan Eatough 18 – 12, so very well done to all of you. In the ladies singles discipline our representative was Margaret Odell who lead for the most part of the match to reach 19 shots but just couldn’t get the last 2 shots. La Marina crept up end by end to take the match 21 – 19. We lost on 4 rinks gaining only 2 points to La Marina’s 10 and the total shots were Horadada 81 La marina 91. In the VCL league we are in 4th place with one more match to play. This is a home match against Country Bowls and we are going to get our own back and come away with a win. Aren’t we team? Horadada welcomes new or experienced bowlers, and provides all equipment. Roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129

Exceptional opportunity to play Lo Romero on Saturday
o Romero Golf will be holding two tournaments this coming Saturday and Sunday and although the latter competition is fully subscribed the tournament on Saturday still has a number of openings. Interestingly this might be the one that would interest most casual golfers and visitors because there is no requirement to produce a handicap certificate and neither is it necessary that entrants are federated with the RFEG. The tournament on the Saturday 30th June is classed as an unofficial tournament, which means that there will be no categories to be competed for, hence no prizes as such. The idea is for golfers to unite in the name of golf, meet likeminded individuals who share the same interests, have a
thoroughly good day at a top class course and participate in the Lo Romero Golf Club celebrations. The green fee is 45 euro per golfer which presents exceptional value including lunch and drinks plus a one off 10th Anniversary Welcome Pack, a snack on the golf course, lots of fantastic gifts which will be given away in the form of Card Draws, opportunities for Longest Drive and Closest to The Pin as well as a chance to win a brand new Volkswagen Roc at Hole No 7 for a Hole In One To register for the tournament on the Saturday golfers will need to phone Lo Romero Golf on 616 478 869 or 966 766 887 or alternatively by email info@loromerogolf.com, entries close on Thursday 28 June 2018 at 12:00pm

Carp R Us This week the club fished the Rio Segura in the centre of Murcia for Round Six of the Summer Series. The river looked in good condition, if a little higher and faster than normal, but appearances were deceptive and over half the field failed to catch fish. First was Steve Fell with 7.80kg caught on a mix of pole and feeder using corn. Second was Jackie Breslin with 3.24kg, third was Steve Owen with 2.22kg of small fish including a tiny barbel and fourth was Dave Sutton with 1.96kg. We had heard rumours that parking was no longer allowed on the waste ground at the side of the river but no notices to this effect were visible, although you are not permitted to park on the track at the side of the river. Cadena Sunrise Bowling - Week 33
Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson The 10-4 victory this week against San Miguel has assured that QBC Tigers are champions of division 3, but as they have a bye next week, we don’t know what the margin will be. Wins for Mel Highland (ladies singles), Terry Morgan (mens singles), Kevin McKenna & Alan Barton (pairs), plus Ian Forbes, Carol & Keith Lowry (trips) did the business for the Tigers with a brilliant points score of 107 - 59. Quesada Lions had a wonderful result taking all 12 points away to Vistabella Saxons and shots 117 - 60. Great bowling from all the players. Team Captain Deidre Leeming said, “I was reserve this week, but so proud of the team spirit and camaraderie.” Lions are still in second place but have closed the gap to 10. The last match of the season next week is at home against the league leaders San Luis Falcons. The Lions need 11 points to win league - fingers crossed! The Cheetahs had a bye in the VCL league this week. The Blenheims had some very hard fought games playing away at San Luis with 3 of the Quesada teams fighting right up to the last end. Although the points were 10-4 in favour of San Luis Wellingtons, with shots 119-92, the Blenheims are still chasing them hard for the top spot in the league. Currently in second place only four points behind San Luis, its still all to play for! This week the Lancasters were hosts to Vistabella Greenways. There were very close games with the Lancasters just falling short of the finishing post on 4 of the 6 rinks. Once again, well done to the trio of Alan Barton, Steve Hibberd and Derek Toozer, and John Cleal, Sandra Heath and Jacqui Johnston who brought home the 4 pots (should be points not pots) for the Lancasters. With only 2 games left to play, "Come on Lancasters!” Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties S.L.Com

San Miguel Golf Society at Las Colinas Las Colinas reports to be one of the best courses in the region, today it did not disappoint. The course was in excellent condition, tee to green. Some tricky pin positions kept the scoring honest, with only two players shooting a net 70, 1 under par. Gold division produced the best scores of the day. Matt Taylor was top gun, beating Darren Hancock (on Countback) after recovering from an 8 on the first. Only three other players recorded net level par, including a 10 and a 9. Sandbagging chaps? Captain Tony Smale's recent handicap chop did not affect him too much, scoring a net 73. The rest of the field tapered away to a distant, wine

Graeme Buchanan , Sarah Mccabe and Alan Craig.
This competition had been won twice in its short history by Sarah McCabe, but this year she had to settle for second place with her 39 points, having been eclipsed by captain Elspeth Craig’s excellent 40 points, helped by two perfect putts from the fringe. In third place with a very creditable 38 points was John Milton.

Not more jargon! HUMMING YOUR SWING? One of the biggest causes of bad golf shots is over-tightening of the muscles.
No, just accept that at a subconscious level your body will start to relate the sound of humming to body tightness and make changes accordingly.
I suppose that strictly speaking the use of the word over-tightening when referring to individual muscles is incorrect as they can’t be over or under contracted as they are either flexed or relaxed.
Don’t try to swing deliberately slower because there is a danger that your swing will become loose and lacking power, simply swing and hum until you feel less strain in your humming.
However the term over-tightening is a good way to explain the problem and more simply put is probably the contracting and use of too many muscles to undertake the task at hand.
This whole process has little to do with sound but more to do with awareness within yourself of how your body works throughout the golf swing and how better to control it at times of maximum stress and pressure.
Probably the best example of this is the dreaded YIPS when it feels as though every muscle in your hands, arms and shoulders are working against each other at the same time. With reference to the golf swing, over-tightening of different parts of the body at different times causes different kinds of errors and problems. When you read stuff like this it really makes you wonder how we hit the ball at all don’t it! Remember that we do this to ourselves for fun! Now you are not unique here because according to sports psychologist Tim Galloway, to tighten is a natural instinct for humans when faced with danger, doubt or the unknown. Ok then, just how do we reduce the impact or identify the presence of over-tightening on our golf swing and us? There are a number of different methods but the one that will explain will give you the most fun and pleasure when practising or playing, although you may get some funny looks! The next time you visit the practise area i want you to try ‘humming’ throughout your golf swing. Just take a few practise swings and ’ listen to the humming’. Even those of you who don’t think they have an over-tightening problem will note a change of pitch of sound throughout their swing. You will note that at first the sound is smooth but during the change of swing direction and at the point of impact the sound becomes ‘strained’ Particularly at the point of contact with the ball you will note the high pitch of the sound and can almost feel the tightening taking place and

As previously reported, last week we played our final medal round of six. The winner was judged on his or her best four cards submitted and the trophy for 2018 goes to Olga Douglas. Congratulations Olga. On Monday we played ‘Change Partners’ which is a two ball better ball format with players swapping around after each six holes. The winning team with a score of 93 points, which was only one short of the all-time record, were John Shervell, Andy McDonald, Allen McClusky and Rachael Leckey. Our latest recruit, Andy McDonald, individually scored an incredible 46 points! He used to play off 13. Wednesday saw John Conway win the weekly stableford with a fine 39 points. Ulrika Barth came in second with 36 and Brian Staines took the bronze with 35. On Friday we played a new format called ‘All fours’. In teams of four it was all to score on the par fours and the best two scores to count on the par 3’s and par 5’s. The winning team with 118 points were Bryan Neal, Marleen Billen and husband and wife Allen and Joyce McClusky. In a very tight contest it was Bryan Neal’s closing 4 pars that ensured their victory. Pues, hasta la semana que viene

Bournemouth among 3 English clubs to pre season at Pinatar Arena Sevilla FC will once again play a pre season friendly at Pinatar Arena. After facing Alcorcón 3 years ago at the San Pedro del Pinatar Football Centre, the Sevilla team will again be training at Pinatar Arena where they will face English Premier League team AFC Bournemouth. It will be an evening game, played at the 3,000 capacity stadium on Saturday 14 July, kicking off at 8pm. Three seasons ago Sevilla, then trained by Emery, drew 1-1 with the Second Division Alcorcón, while this July Machin will measure his progress against Bournemouth in one of the most attractive games of the summer preseason so far arranged. While based at the La Manga Club sports resort, Eddie Howe’s side will also face La Liga side Levante at the Pinatar Arena on Friday, 20th July, at 8pm local time. Meanwhile at least two other English teams will be spending part of their pre-season at Pinatar Arena with the 1981 UEFA Cup champions, Ipswich Town, confirming a
When England kick off their final Group game against Belgium on June 28 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia forgotten hero Nobby Stiles will know little of it. Stiles, capped 28 times, who celebrated his 76th birthday last month, has dementia.

Nobby Stiles - one of the Three Lions greats in midst of Russia 2018 World Cup By Andrew Atkinson
www.theleader.info
The former England and Manchester United star, who was also diagnosed with prostrate cancer five years ago, will be watching the game in his Manchester home. But Nobby, 1966 World Cup winner, will know little, if anything, of the current status of England's status.
Having been diagnosed with dementia 16 years ago he has worsened as the years pass. Added to the toothless midfield general woes, Stiles suffered a mini stroke in 2010. Memories of Stiles joyfully dancing after England's 66 World Cup win against West Germany at Wembley - grinning missing front teeth - will be forever remembered. Stiles made over 300 appearances at United, and played for my home town club Preston North End during 197375. He went on to manage the club during 1977-81. England and United legend Bobby Charlton also played for and managed Preston. My thoughts will be focused on England against Belgium on Friday but also on Stiles, who will go down as one of the Three Lions greatest players, as he suffers the battle against dementia. The sorry story for Stiles is that he's the forgotten hero. And one who sold his 66 World Cup winner's medal that brought £166,000. A pittance in today's multi million game - a far cry from that of 1966.
