TOXIC FUMES FINALLY PLUGGED AT BURNING WASTE TIP ver 100 people attended the Forum organized by C.L.A.R.O. and the Altamira Community of Las Ramblas on Friday afternoon at Las Ramblas Golf Club to explain and discuss developments in the ongoing campaign to end the dangers to both health and the environment posed by the illegal waste tip in Campoamor.
O
Present on the occasion were Councillors of Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada. In addition to C.L.A.R.O. and
the Altamira Community, speakers included a representative of the action group against illegal waste tips VERTIVEGA, a Deputy from the regional Valencia parliament and a senior official from the Department of the Environment in the Valencia regional government. Speakers traced the history of the waste tip located originally in the municipality of Orihuela and in Pilar de la Horadada after the separation of Pilar from Orihuela in 1986. Continued on Page 6

At the invitation of “Chatters”, a friendly group that meets in The Pasty Shack in Los Alcazares, “The Deadwood Stage Company presented an informal 50 minute entertainment on Wednesday 15th June. This was the first public performance of the new group which enabled 14 members to give a humorous selection of poems, monologues and short sketches. The morning’s presentation opened with 2 verses of the well known “Deadwood Stage” song with appropriately altered words. Pauline Shaw sang an unaccompanied heartfelt solo, which was much enjoyed by the audience. Predominantly the society aims to ‘act’ rather than ‘sing’ and ‘dance’, but there’s always the opportunity in the future for all three if required for their choice of material. “Deadwood” meets once a week on a Wednesday morning until the heat makes it too uncomfortable but in the autumn will probably step up their rehearsals for their winter programme. Any further information will be gladly given re. membership or availability for short entertainments by the group by ringing 966 77 4127.

Referendum Roadshow takes to the water One of the most notable clashes took place on the River Thames between Nigel Farage and Bob Geldhof
T
hursday sees one of the most important decisions to be made by the British public, as the vote takes place as to whether the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union. The “in” or “out” campaigners have both been laying out their arguments for their side with numerous celebrities jumping on the almost literal bandwagon rallying support of their own opinion. One of the most notable clashes took place on the River Thames when Nigel Farage, who himself has seen a spike in coverage through the media despite the poor performance of his last electoral campaign, faced off by former pop star Bob Geldof which led to a slow speed boat chase between two laden craft as power dinghies meandered through the waterway, with fishermen turning a low powered water jet on one of those whilst Geldof questioned how many debates about the fishing industry Farage had actually attended, away from the pomp of the media battle and in the grim reality of actually representing the voters. In Spain, there has been fear and trepidation as warnings that Brits may find themselves expelled and sent back to the UK, Gibraltar would once again be claimed as part of Spain and those who have chosen to live in the sun may lose the right to any benefits once they return.
Polls lead in both ways depending on the political bias of the newspaper reporting the figures. Not necessarily their fault, they only report what their readers claim and if those readers already express a bias it is bound to lean towards the same direction as the publication. There are many independent polls too but they also contradict each other. The only truth that did come out this week was the overall shock and disgust at the brutal killing of Joe Cox MP, a victim of “The well of hatred killed”, according to Jeremy Corbin, but it is that hatred and confusion which have been fuelling opinion over the lack or real facts and information. Ironically, considering the Farage / Geldof battle reported earlier, Cox lived on a houseboat on the Thames with her family and her home became a floral tribute following the tragedy. Of course the reality is nobody really knows what outcome the decision will make either way. The majority of people are still recognising that they are “confused” by the whole thing, so much so many might not even opt to vote, but come Thursday, the decision will be made and with time fast moving out to get your postal vote in, move quick to decide, “Should I stay or should I go”.

STILL NO DATE FOR ORIHUELA COSTA SCHOOL Despite the award of the contract early last month there is still no commencement date for the new Playas de Orihuela Infant and Junior School, according to the Valencia Ministry of Education although a spokesman did day that work would start ‘imminently.’ After 13 years in ‘temporary accommodation’ the authorities say that they are keen to see the building work underway but they were unable to be more specific by providing an actual date. A lack of information raised complaints from parents earlier this week, as they say they will continue to demonstrate until they see tangible evidence of construction. The tender to construct the new school was awarded for an amount of 6.6 million euros after more than a year of negotiations. The build is said to be 18 months, so even with an immediate start it is unlikely to be ready until early 2018 with entry unlikely before the start of the 2018/19 academic year.
CHECKMATE The first School Chess Olympiad was held in Guardamar last week in the Reina Sofia Park. It was organised by the local school of chess in conjunction with AMPAS, the Ayuntamiento and the town's municipal schools. Almost 100 children took part in the event, many of them still learning, but it was a great advert for the game which is widely supported by many clubs in the Vega Baja.
TECHNO MUSIC CONCERT CONFIRMED
After disagreements between the Ayuntamiento and promoters were finally resolved Im sure that residents of Torrevieja will be delighted to know that Electromar has confirmed that it will once again be staging its technomusic concert in the Park Antonio Soria next month. The show will be operate on 4 separate stages on 16 July and already the signs are that they will be playing to a full house. Significantly, one stage will be reserved for music and artists from the Revival nightclub, in Los Montesinos that was closed down in February 2013, said to be an icon of night culture in Spain over the last decade.

An operational license was granted by Orihuela in the 1980’s but later revoked by the Valencia Government when the construction boom produced residential developments and golf courses close to the site, principally in Orihuela. The waste tip is illegal in that it was never supervised and controlled by the authorities and after it was closed the process of decomposition resulted in the emission, over the period of many years, of toxic fumes and obnoxious smells which seriously affected the health of those residents of Las Ramblas, living barely a kilometre away from the site. Joint action in 2014, initiated by C.L.A.R.O. and the Altamira community, aided by the expertise of VERTIVEGA, resulted in legal denuncias and an intensive media campaign, locally and nationally. Legal action resulted in the operation of the tip being brought before both the criminal and the environment courts and an intervention by the new government in Valencia requiring the owners of the site to present a plan to seal the waste tip and put an end to the emission of toxic gases. Sealing of the waste tip by the deposit of thousands of tons of sand and earth was completed recently and the escape of gases has now been ended, positive results of the joint action by C.L.A.R.O. and Altamira residents of Las Ramblas which were welcomed by all participants. The end of suffering from the effects of the tip was considered a tremendous achievement which no one had expected in the space of two years. However, in the discussion it became clear that this was considered to only be a first step with further action required by the Valencia government that would consist of ensuring that any continued decomposition did not constitute dangers of new escapes of toxic fumes or damage to the ground and ground water below the mountain of rubbish. Also it is apparent that studies are still being carried out which will need to be approved by Valencia prior to the next phase of the clean up. Finally there would be the question of how to remove the neutralized waste either by physical removal or a process of microbial removal and regeneration. Satisfaction with the results of this determined campaign to defend the rights of residents and protect them from dangers to their health were evident in the course of the Forum but so too was the message that efforts should not be relaxed and would have to be maintained to put a definitive end to the suffering which had been inflicted on residents through the shortcomCLARO ings of the political system for Press so many years. Rural Robbers caught Red Handed
O
fficers from the Guardia Civil in Alicante have arrested six people aged between 20 and 44, all of Spanish nationality and from the same family, suspected of stealing more than a thousand plastic boxes, a generator, three irrigation pumps, and two vans. The thefts were committed across the provinces of Alicante and Murcia and have an estimated value in the region of 300,000 euro, In order to try to remain undetected, the gang, comprised of five men and a woman, would alternate the use of the two vans so that the farmers would not recognise them whilst they carried out surveillance and then enacted the thefts.
However, a dedicated team of Guardia Civil officers from Torrevieja, who were based in Almoradí in order to investigate rural thefts, managed to catch the group red handed whilst they were taking items from a premises at the La Pedrera reservoir in Torremendo. In the location where the gang were caught, they had caused 15,000 euro worth of economic damage and had loaded a generator and oil into their van. Upon checking their identity the officers found that one of the gang was known to the authorities for selling stolen items to recycling plants, most of which had been intercepted and returned to their rightful owners.

Torrevieja Lifeguards protest job cuts
A
fter an announcement by the Cruz Roja that 71 lifeguards would be made redundant this year, the workers took to the front of Torrevieja town hall to protest the job losses, and air their frustrations over the threats of drones replacing them on the beaches. The group also wanted to emphasise the point that lifesaving is a service and should not be treated as a business, although it is also fair to say that this argument is somewhat weakened by the fact they receive a wage for performing the duties.
Less of their anger seemed to be pointed towards the private contractors who have been sweeping through the area in recent years snapping up contracts which would or could normally be fulfilled by the Cruz Roja, these contractors who win the tenders by offering lower prices and, in some cases, allegedly providing inferior services. The unions point the responsibility directly at the provincial Cruz Roja for failing to secure the contracts for the seasonal workers. They also called the City Council to mediate the contractor to take the most of lifeguards. The group were welcomed to a meeting with the Torrevieja council in order for them to address their frustrations, although the council themselves have pointed out that the bidding and tender process is out of their hands. Meanwhile, the delayed tender process for providing lifeguards in Orihuela is set to come to a close, although it is not known if the Cruz Roja has bid to provide that service, which would take it away from the private sector firms if successful.

Valencia bans Live Animal Circuses The regional government of Valencia unanimously approved the banning of circuses which use live animals throughout the community. Valencia has now become the second autonomy in Spain to adopt an initiative of this kind, after Catalonia had already adopted the move. A number of municipalities within the region had already adopted the ban themselves, but this latest regional initiative enforces the ban across all 24. The initiative urges the PSOE and Compromís led government of the Generalitat yo initiate a dialogue with those responsible for circuses to stipulate terms and deadlines for the completion of the use of wild animals and their convenient relocation. The measure seeks to stop the installation of tents with animals in the cities of Valencia before the “inability to adequately meet their physiological, mental and social necessity” are met. All political groups with representation (PP, PSOE, Compromís, Ciudadanos and Podemos) voted in favour of the initiative to be included in the amendment of the regional laws enforced through the Department of Agriculture.

MELODY MAKERS DELIGHT AT THE BOULEVARD housands of happy shoppers at Zenia Boulevard were treated to some fantastic entertainment on Sunday when the Costa's leading chorus, Melody Makers International, performed three times in aid of the children's charity, Debra - The Butterfly Children.
T
The charity supports those unfortunate children with the disease Epidermylosis Bullosa (EB) which leaves them with abject bruising or scarring - even to the slightest touch. Melody Makers, under their conductor Nigel Hopkins, performed a superb medley of songs from both 'Phantom of the Opera' and the Abba movie 'Mamma Mia!' to rapturous applause from the thousands of shoppers who were enjoying an evening outing to the popular centre. Notable amongst the performers were both Verity Hall, who compere Simon Morton from Sunshine FM described as 'the 18 year old
'singing sensation', superbly soaring above the Boulevard with music from 'My Fair Lady', and Nigel Hopkins himself, who performed the Harry Secombe classic 'If I Ruled The World'. Melody Makers will continue to support for The Debra charity (they raised €3,000 at their January concert) at the weekend with 'A Century of Popular Songs' at the Orihuela Costa Resort on 25th June. Tickets for both the afternoon (2pm) and evening (8pm) performances are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia C.C.; also at the Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar, and at the Debra shops, San Fulgencio and Quesada. If Sunday was anything to go by audiences are in for some fabulous entertainment!

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Irish Monk Discovers New Canary Island then loses it!
M
ost people recognise the Canary Islands archipelago as being a cluster of seven inhabited islands. Of course, there are many more islets and rocky outcrops, which few people mention or know anything about. Personally, I regard the archipelago as consisting of eight inhabited islands, and those who have visited the beautiful, yet small island of La Graciosa, just off Lanzarote, will know what I mean. However, this story is about the ninth island, the ghost island, which is still being looked for… The mysterious island of San Borondón, which is the Canarian name for an Irish monk called Saint Brendan of Clonfert, the Irish patron saint of travellers who lived around 500AD. Brendan was a monk in Tralee, County Kerry, who sailed in a small boat with 14 fellow monks into the Atlantic Ocean, in search of the New World. In true Irish fashion, best retold with a glass or two of Guinness, the story goes that Brendan met with fire hurling demons, a variety of monstrous creatures, and floating

crystal columns, which were possibly icebergs; they also rescued three other monks from the inhospitable waters of the Atlantic. Eventually, they landed on an island where they found trees and a great deal of vegetation; it many ways, it was a true Garden of Eden. The monks lived on the island for six years when one day, as they were celebrating mass, the island began to move in the water, described as rather like a whale. After many trials and tribulations, Brendan eventually found his way back to Ireland with many a tale to tell over his glass of mead. At the time, it was thought that the monks had reached the shores of North America, or possibly other Atlantic islands, such as the Canary Islands. Over time, it was thought that this new island, now named San Borondón’, was an island within the Canaries archipelago, somewhere to the west of La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. Other sailors attempted to reach it, but when they got close to its shores, the island became covered with mist and vanished. San Borondón existed in the minds of many people, with detailed accounts from sailors who claimed that they had landed and explored the island before it sank once again into the Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, in some early Atlantic treaties concerning the Canary Islands, there are references to “the islands of Canaria, already discovered or to be discovered”, just in case. Indeed, the Island of San Borondón is clearly referred to on several maps of the period.
In the 18th Century, tens of thousands of witnesses declared to the authorities that they had seen the ghostly island from the mountains of El Hierro. Despite further expeditions, the island would not yield its secrets. The persistence of this legend of the voyage of Saint Brendan to the Promised Land of the Saints, the Islands of Happiness and Fortune, remains to this day. It is still possible to talk to some of the residents of El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma who claim to have seen the island briefly before it sank once again into the brilliant blue waters of the Canary Islands. “Let the Guanche drums resound and the conch shells blow, for the mysterious island is appearing in the midst of the waves: here comes San Borondón, showing up in the mist like a queen with the surf as suite…” San Borondón – Cabrera/Santamaria If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his book, ‘Island in the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780992767181). ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. HEAD TO HEAD The mental approach to golf is no more evident than when playing head to head match play. Why is this? The answer is simple you are standing eyeball to eyeball with your opponent in the knowledge that all you have to do to win today is to be better than him or her. You only have one person to beat. Therefore you look for every advantage that you can to gain the ‘mental’ high ground. This is not something new because Walter Hagen was probably the first of the ‘mental game' players on the USPGA circuit in the 1920’s. For example his clubs were manufactured and marked incorrectly by one club (e.g. a 5-iron was really a 4-iron). So a guy who had a philosophy of ‘never hurry and don’t worry’ also had a sharp competitive edge and mental attitude. Sevvy Ballesteros was a past master of this and it shows in his Ryder Cup record and number of world match play wins. Do you remember during the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island when he complained of a ball switch by his foursome’s opponents Paul Azinger and Chip Beck? The Europeans went on to win the game from being 3 down at the time of the incident. Incidentally during all the Ryder Cup matches that he played Sevvy always introduced himself to his opponents on the first tee as Mr Severiano Ballesteros. Of course everyone on the world knew who he was BUT he was looking for some small advantage over his opponents as he did when conversing in Spanish with Jose Maria Olazabal during matches. Why not try something like this yourself, for example, give your opponent a few 3ft putts early in the round and then make him hole an 18” putt and look at his or her reaction. However remember at all times that golf must be played within the rules and in a cordial but competitive manner. When the match is over and if you have lost, congratulate your opponent and mean it. If you have won the match accept the victory with dignity and honour. This is important to remember because even the best golfers at all levels are lucky if they win more than 50% of their games. You will therefore have to face victory and defeat in almost equal measure. Carp - R - Us Club News Thursday the 16th of June saw the Clubs Anglers take the long trip up to Beniarres once again. 3 weeks ago the water level was 22% now it is down to 18%. It had dropped over 3 feet. Where it will end up I dread to think. The match was in two halves as there is a big problem with the low levels of oxygen in the water and in the keep nets this could cause harm to the fish. The winner of round 4 of the Summer series was Mark Foden with 23.96kg. Second was Andy Foden with with 18.12kg, third Graham Leadley with 12.80kg and in fourth place Roy Buttress with 12.06kg. Round 5 will be fished on the river Segura in Murcia on the 23rd June, pegs at 8.00an and fishing will be from 9.00 till 2.00pm.
The Clubs next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 28th of June. Starting at 7.30pm, the cost is 1€ per person and teams to a maximum of 6 are allowed to compete. Tom would like to thank all that turned up to support the Race night on the 10th of June. The next Sunday meeting will be on the 3rd of July with the Committee at 10.30, followed by the General meeting at 11.00am. The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar.
