Woman with terrorist links arrested in Alicante Photo credit: Guardia Civil A woman was detained on Wednesday following an early morning raid at her house in Alicante. Police say that Dolores Hidalgo, a 36 year old Spaniard, was arrested because of her links to the terrorist organisation DAESH as she attempted to move to Syria or Iraq where she was to join the organisation with her four children. The woman, who was thought to be from Murcia, tried to travel with her 4 children in 2014 to the Syrian-Iraqi zone, where her husband is said to have died in the conflict. She is said to have been working with ISIS in Alicante According to local residents the woman had hardly any relationship with anyone in the

neighbourhood. In fact on local dweller said that whenever he saw her getting onto a bus she never spoke anyone or sat with any men. However another resident who knew her through her children said that she was a "normal

and nice" girl. She added that the woman had lived in the area for 4 or 5 years and although it was known that she

was married to a man of Moroccan nationality no-one had ever seen her husband. Continued on Page 2

Footage shared by the police showed the woman being arrested and weapons being removed from the property. A Police statement read: 'Spanish National Police have arrested Dolores Hidalgo, a 36-year-old widow of a man who is suspected of having fought and died in the ranks of the so-called Islamic State.' The Spanish Press reported that Hidalgo attempted to travel by road through France to get to her husband, but gave up when she heard he had died. The woman was said to have been advertising for a new husband on social media on which she also praised the work of her dead husband. A government spokesman, Juan Carlos Moragues, also confirmed that the woman carried out propaganda work of a jihadist activity through social networks, in which she "published some very radical, aggressive and very violent entries”. The four children are now in the care of the social services in the Valencian Generalitat. They are said to be aged four, six, seven and 15 years. The oldest of them, according to a neighbour, had once told her that her father had been shot dead. Moragues praised the work of the police together with the coordination of the State Security Corps and the Moroccan intelligence services.

He noted that since the terrorism alert was increased to level 4 in June 2015, 190 jihadists have been detained in Spain. This is the first detention in the Comunitat Valenciana in 2017. The Alicante Arrests come on the back of reported threats by ISIS on British holiday destinations here in Spain. Last week’s British press said that the terror group is beginning to publish more propaganda in Spanish to 'influence radicals in the country'. They are said to have launched a campaign to hire Spanish translators, which indicates a growing interest in attracting Spanish-speaking foreign fighters.” The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has not changed its advice on travelling to Spain. It is still deemed as having a “general threat” from terrorism, rather than “high”. Spain is currently at level four on the anti-terror alert – the same ranking as the UK.

Avda Villamartin closed for repair work Drivers were inconvenienced last week by the closure of Avda Villamartin between La Zenia and Los Dolses while necessary repairs and maintenance were being carried out. Cllr Luisa Boné explained that the road itself was becoming increasingly dangerous because of the many potholes and the overhanging trees. Recent weeks had seen a dramatic increase in the number of complaints from residents as a result of which a road maintenance team moved in to re asphalt the road and to prune the many overhanging branches. Unfortunately the asphalting work carried out seems rather minimal, appearing to be little more than a ‘quick fix’ with the underlying problem of the creeping tree roots largely ignored. Nevertheless, police diversions were put in place while the work was carried out. Meanwhile the Coastal Authority was also busy carrying out improvements and repairs on local beaches and walkways with the replacement of irrigation pipework in Mil Palmeras and with work to damaged palm trees in Mil Palmeras, La Zenia and Flamenca Beach.

Five Bulgarians detained for exploiting minors The National Police have detained five Bulgarian nationals for bringing minors from Bulgaria and forcing them to beg on the streets of Orihuela.

The police intervention resulted in the arrest of five people three men and two women - all of Bulgarian nationality between the ages of 40 and 55.

The children’s family came to Spain because of the precarious economic situation in their homeland but when they arrived their documents and passports were taken away and their children were forced to beg. The children, aged 12 and 16, have now been transferred into the care of social services.

The two minors were taken into custody and transferred to a juvenile centre.

The operation got underway last year in Murcia when agents from the Unit against Illegal Immigration (UCRIF) began their investigation into the Bulgarians who were thought to be exploiting fellow compatriots. They operated out of an abandoned house in Orihuela from where they regularly travelled to Bulgaria to entice their victims. Once installed in the house in Orihuela they were forced to beg on Orihuela streets with any money they earned taken away. If they attempted to conceal any of their earnings or to escape they were violently beaten.

Two Women arrested Destructive caterpillar for local robberies invading La Florida homes R

T

wo sixty year old women were arrested by the Civil Guard from Pilar de la Horadada on Tuesday, both understood to be Spanish Nationals, for allegedly carrying out two crimes of robbery with violence and seven crimes of theft from local properties that were occupied, in Rojales, Pilar de la Horadada and the Orihuela Costa. Investigations date back to last September when agents from the Guardia were first notified of several robberies in the three towns Rojales, El Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa. They culminated with the women’s arrests in the city of Alicante. Apparently, the two women were regularly seen walking around housing estates in broad daylight, trying to locate homes where they found the doors

open. Whilst one of the women then kept watch her colleague would quickly enter the property looking for easy pickings. The robberies were fast, taking just small objects of value, money, jewellery and tablets or mobile phones. On two occasions, the robbers were surprised by the occupants of the houses, but far from quickly running off they used violence to make their escape, a fact that caused great alarm on some of the urbanizations. As a result of the civic collaboration, the Civil Guard agents have been able to identify and subsequently locate these two women, who have now been arrested for two violent robbery offenses, and 7 further crimes of robbery.

esidents of the Orihuela Costa and San Miguel de Salinas in Las Filipinas and La Florida are demanding immediate help from their respective councils in their fight against the invasion of the pine processionary caterpillar. In many areas the caterpillar, who’s urticating hairs of the larvae cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals, has been invading terraces and gardens causing uneasiness and discomfort to anyone who gets in its way. It is also one of the most destructive species to pines and cedars in southern Europe. The residents are insisting that the problem has now reached extremely worrying level and are demanding action from the Department of Environment saying that if nothing is done urgently, the caterpillars will soon penetrate into their houses. The complaint has been passed to the municipal officials in the Orihuela Costa by the Federation of

Orihuela Costa Associations who have responded by saying that their budget allows little additional action. A representative of the Environmental councillor stated that some investigative was carried out in the area on 9 February, they have identified the problem and they will try to do more to eradicate the problem. The caterpillars are notable for sitting in tent-like nests high in pine trees before proceeding through the woods and along pathways in nose-to-tail columns. Lengthy processions are formed when fully-grown caterpillars abandon their host tree in search of pupation sites, when as many as three hundred caterpillars may travel long distances from the natal tree looking for soft soil in which to bury themselves and form cocoons. They should be avoided by humans and by animals.

Both Serrano and Soler have worked with the staff of the Parks and Gardens planting several specimens of the plant, a species that is in danger of extinction in the Valencian Community. Serrano highlighted the vulnerability of the species saying that "last year’s planting has had considerable success. Of the specimens that were planted more than 40 percent have rooted and are also about to flourish. We are all very pleased”.

LET GO OF FEAR W

Fear and worry do not benefit us in any way – emotions like this just create more stress! We can’t always control events in our lives, especially world events, but we can control our reactions to these events. Whilst those of us with a more positive outlook on life find it easy to “think” ourselves better, it is often harder for those people who always expect a negative outcome. The good news is that it is possible to change your way of thinking if you want to, it just takes practice! Positive Affirmations more you do it.

Decide what it is you want to say about the situation and then say it every day out loud, preferably in front of a mirror. If you find this uncomfortable just do it anywhere; it will become easier and more convincing the

Keep affirmations short and simple and always use only positive words e.g., “Brexit will happen and all will be well” is more effective than “Please don’t let Brexit affect my life in Spain!” – use words that suit you and reflect what you want. It sounds very twee but it works!!

You can also write the affirmation down on a piece of paper and carry it around with you during the day and refer to it regularly. When you notice a change in how you feel, change the affirmation if you need to.

Positive Visualisation The more you worry about something the worse it appears, you avoid dealing with it and the fear and anxiety surrounding it becomes bigger. One way to deal with this negative energy is to imagine or mentally “see” a positive result. Start by sitting quietly where you won’t be disturbed and visu-

Online reviews of health products 'are misleading' Clinical trials use a number of techniques designed to reduce bias The reviews on Amazon were found to be overwhelmingly positive "Don't believe online reviews of health products, they're 'skewed'," the Mail Online reports. A psychologist compared online reviews of three medical products with results from clinical trials, and found the reviews are skewed towards the positive. The author of the study, Dr Micheál de Barra, wanted to look into whether people who have had good outcomes from treatments are more likely to go online and give positive reviews than people who have had average or poor outcomes. As such, the product reviews provided by online retailers may be distorted. The author looked at Amazon.com – the US version of the site – and analysed two cholesterol-reducing products and one weight loss treatment. In general, he found the extent of cholesterol reduction or weight loss reported by online reviewers was substantially greater than that demonstrated in randomised controlled trials, a more reliable source of evidence on effectiveness. The research highlights an underlying issue with online reviews, whether they are for health products, films or books. Online reviews are arguably subject to a type of reporting bias in that they are written by people who take the time to write them. This means it's far more likely that these reviews are written by people who have very strong views, either positive or negative, about a product than people who would score it three out of five stars. Useful impartial online resources for assessing the effectiveness of medical products and treatments include NHS Evidence, the TRIP Database and the Cochrane Library. www.nhs.uk

Torrevieja and Cartagena agree joint tourism package

T

orrevieja’s councillor of Tourism, Fanny Serrano and the deputy mayor and councillor for the Economy in Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, announced last Tuesday that they have launched a joint initiative to promote tourism in the two cities which will include reciprocal offers, as well as a calendar that is planned to give visibility to "the complementary aspects" of activities that are available in both municipalities. The objective of the arrangement is to take advantage of the very different "tourist synergies, that are available. In Cartagena they can offer the visitors from Torrevieja access to archaeological sites and historical centres, while the Torrevieja tourist office will make available ecotourism routes for the Natural Parks and the Lagoons at Torrevieja and La Mata, "said Serrano. Torrevieja’s councillor, accompanied by several members of her staff, will visit Cartagena on 2 March. "This is a starting point from which we want to develop our relationship over time, thereby intensifying our collaboration," she said, following which "there will be a visit of tourism experts from Cartagena to Torrevieja" since "it is easier to show exactly what is available first hand," she said. Cartagena’s deputy mayor said that she mainly

Euro Bowling National Champions for 2nd consecutive year In the third and final round of the National League, EBT clinched six wins and a draw, finally beating Barcelona's Diagonal by four points. The Salt City club, which has just celebrated its tenth anniversary, thus wins its second consecutive title. Starting off on Saturday just one point behind the Catalans, the Torry men won their first four matches with ease, but so did Diagonal, and the status quo prevailed. In their three matches on Sunday, EBT first drew 5-5 against Levante, and then beat Diagonal 6-4. To grab the gold medals, Diagonal needed at least seven points from their last match against Levante. Already down 0-4 after the first game, however, their struggle was futile as EBT remained strong, beating Oviedo 10-0 and sailing to victory. Final standings: 1. Euro Bowling Torrevieja

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

A courgette plant in full fruit

15

By Bar rie Mahoney the job nicely, resulting in the courgette shortage, as well as increased bowel movement, so please be careful Now, broccoli is a different matter; I adore broccoli and particularly when it is served with a nice Stilton or blue cheese sauce. Served with a nice crusty chunk of bread, it is a quick and nutritious meal that I can highly recommend that used to be served as ‘Brocco Breath’ in one of my favourite UK cafe bars. The name becomes obvious if you use the correct type of strong cheese!

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

On to the subject of the iceberg lettuce; now be honest, does anyone actually eat and enjoy them? Surely, the main purpose of the iceberg lettuce is to look fresh and lovely when you buy it, to look self-righteous at the check-out when you buy it alongside that pack of jam donuts, and then to lurk in the back of the fridge unloved and forgotten for a week until it collapses with embarrassment, turning into a pungent brown slurry before it is finally discovered and disposed of; unloved, unused and forgotten. Personally, I wouldn't eat one either; they are tasteless and reminds me of chewing through pages of the Daily Hate, which seriously disables the digestion.

Getting Your Hands on a Nice Courgette

I

found it difficult to look at a courgette this week; the same goes for broccoli and lettuce too. After all, how could I enjoy such luxuries when I know full well that the good people of the UK cannot get their hands on them? Indeed, according to the UK’s favourite tabloid, the Daily Hate, people are craving for them and will pay anything up to ten times the normal price just to get their hands on a nice juicy iceberg. Indeed, some supermarkets are rationing supplies to prevent ‘bulk buying’. The official reason for the shortage is blamed upon poor weather in Spain and other southern European countries, which will probably not be normalised until April. Of course, much depends upon where you shop, and other supermarkets have more than enough stock from other suppliers, although of course this ‘shortage’ has led to a rapid increase in prices.

mal price. According to the Daily Hate, Spain is accused of “hoarding” fruit and vegetables whilst British shoppers are being rationed. It is just so selfish and typical of those difficult Europeans, isn't it? Well, with the Brexit negotiations about to start, it can only get worse.

It did make me smile when I read on the letters page that some keen Brexiters are complaining that the shortage is a conspiracy by the Spanish, French and other European countries to get their own back on the UK’s cheeky attempts to leave the European Union. Apparently, Spanish vegetable growers, who grow around 80 per cent of all EU out of season fresh produce, are so greedy that they prefer to feed their own people courgettes, broccoli and lettuce rather than to send them to the UK where they could get ten times the nor-

Seriously, I am not a great lover of the humble courgette, although I don't mind too much if it is heavily disguised as something else. Indeed, I learned last week that courgettes can now be turned into a kind of spaghetti, which involves the use of an expensive machine to magically turn a courgette into ‘courghetti’ and, in this way, people will now eat them since they are supremely good for you. Did you know that all adults should now be eating at least ten portions of fruit and veg each day, rather than five? Apparently, courgettes do

I was surprised to learn that around 90 per cent of fruit consumed in Britain is imported from Europe, as well as around 50 per cent of vegetables. The UK also has to import significant quantities of fruit and vegetables from South America and the US, which makes a nonsense of the carbon footprint, as well as the UK economy. I was faced with boxes of fresh courgettes, broccoli and the dreaded iceberg lettuce in my local supermarket in the Canary Islands this week. The prices were about normal for this time of the year, and until I read the article I was unaware of what the fuss is all about. If you are really desperate for an iceberg lettuce, courgette or broccoli, might I suggest that you pop out with an empty suitcase and take advantage of our plentiful supplies of fruit and vegetables, as well as our sunshine. Alternatively, there are always frozen food products . EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON

There was trouble brewing at the Ale House with a clash of the titans that was the Hub Hyenas versus El Capitan. A misunderstanding of the rules saw tempers fray and marred what should have been a Great match. The rules state how the draw should be done:-

Well, the first half of the season is over and the 16 teams have now become two divisions of 8. All teams will retain their match points from the first half but their leg points drop back to zero. The Hub finished in top spot with a mighty 29 points out of a possible 30 but they have some close contenders and have to play all the top 7 teams to see if they can maintain that lead. Meanwhile in Division B, Evo’s or the Tavern Oldies are looking favourite to win the shield this year but don’t rule out all the ladies’ teams putting up a fight!

All the teams played away at neutral venues. There was some controversy about how the draw should be done but the rules stipulate that the captains choose their players in the order they wish to play them and then turn over the cards to see who is playing who. At the Pint Depot, the Porters made light work of seeing off the Jaguars scoring several 140’s along the way. Only the hardy trio of Tracey Simpson (D10), Sharon Marshall and Simone de Lacy could do anything against the onslaught but to be fair nearly all the ladies got down to the finish against the lime green lovelies from the Rioja Centre.

The Hellraisers had a hell of a time playing the Ale House lads, so much so that they decided to play The whole 12 games even after they lost 7-0! The girls nearly always got down to the finish but just couldn’t nail it and Karl and his lads romped away with all the points. The Cheeky Hen’s Chicks also forgot about the first to 7 rule and took a 12-0 drubbing from Las Rosas! Their counter parts the Hen’s Coqs were more fortunate though and saw off the Misfits 7-3. The fixtures for the second half of the season have been completed and emailed to the captains, along with the dates for the next round of the Team KO’s and other competitions. The committee will notify the captains of when and where the draw for the next round of the KO will take place so it can be witnessed by all, Again the matches will take place at neutral venues.

El Rancho Bowls Club. The Broncos entertained La Siesta Pioneers and played very well to take 5 rinks and the shots on a difficult day. As we know the losing rink can be just down to the luck and opponents draw. Meanwhile The Pintos were at Emerald Isle playing the Titans and although play was a mixed bag, enough had a good day to enable us to come away with 2 rinks. On Friday the Raiders had a bye. Whilst the Mustangs were at Country Bowls playing the Gheckos, the mat was playing unexpectedly narrow and fast whilst heavy with due, but slowed down rapidly and widened as it quickly dried. With several close run rinks the Mustangs came away with one rink and a draw, of course results can often be a result of rink and opponent draw as well as play. Judy Foley, Keith Cunningham and Geoff Jones 16-18. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 1517. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 21-16. Irene Thomson, Jim Taylor and Eddie Thomson 12-21. June Whitworth, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 17-17. Bob Morgan, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 14-19. The Pathfinders did very well away against Country Bowls Flamingos winning on four rinks plus the overall shots to give them a 10-4 win. Steve Hindle, Angie Butler and Peter Bailey won 25-9 while John Withers, Martin Butler and Paul Tregoing had a very good 30-6 win. Don Harrison,Bernie Carr and Mo Taylor won 30-20 and Dave Taylor, "Captain of the Day" Dave McGaw and Lorita Rae won by one shot. The Seagulls went over to La Siesta to play the Blues and came away very blue in the face losing 10-4. Perhaps they were missing someone. Tom Edwards, Peter Bailey and the wonderful Barbara Forshaw won and so did Dave Taylor, Gina Hindle and Lynne Armitage. Better news from the Sharks who had an 8-6 win over the Vistabella Picadors at home. Roy Hart, Peter Parsons and Andy Bartlett had a 23-13 win while Dave Lewis, Jim Manning and Margaret McLaughlin won by the same difference and Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons won by two shots more. Carp R Us The club fished its Winter Cup competition on 16th at Embalse de Beniarres. This is a beautiful venue which, over the last couple of years, has suffered from a lack of water. This is not the case now with the Embalse at around 80% capacity. Unfortunately, the bad weather over the last couple of months has left a lot of debris in the water and today most of it was forming a barrier of about two metres between the fishermen and the water, making life difficult to say the least. Winner on the day was Andy Foden with just under six kilo with Roy Dainty second with just over two kilo. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact us through the Facebook page, the website or calling the club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634379081.

WOLFPACK PLAYING AWAY February 14th … Society Day …. Valentines Day. Love was in the air but all bets were off when we got to the first tee. Twenty members and guests descended on Villamartin for our first away day of the calendar year. The wind which had prevailed for many days before had abated and the sun shone as we approached the first tee. Ah, the first tee - how the fairway seems to narrow when you stand there looking out. The course, although patchy in places but with great greens played very well. All thoughts of love and kisses soon evaporated as play got underway. The front nine flowed and there were some good scores as the round progressed. Bryan Hirst, having found his mojo again was scoring freely. Several players were hard on his heels at the halfway point - but Bryan took the front nine with a score of 19 points on a count back The back nine, for some reason, proved troublesome for most. Not so, however for Geoff Smith, who scored better than all of us. Due to a “clerical error” there was only one nearest the pin prize - on the 9th. This went to Steve Lugger. The day became long as the play slowed and the sun went down. Back at The Royal Oak there was lots of totting up to do, so the prize giving had to wait until after dinner … with full stomachs the following were the lucky players : Overall, Bryan Hirst 32 points, second Steve Lugger 30 and third Nigel Cotton with 28. Sweep winner and the prize for best guest went to Abe Numeijer. The Wolfpack play on Tuesdays and Fridays at Campoamor - if you would like to join us, please contact either Steve on 604 11 27 29 or Dave on 677 147 848. Overall Winner Bryan Hirst (centre) with Nigel Cotton and Steve Lugger.

Therefore Simon Sharples started the procedures and then handed them over to our new captain Stuart Robertson. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Condition of Golf Courses on the Costa Blanca’ The extreme weather conditions that we have seen over the last month have taken their toll on our local golf courses with green keepers throughout the region struggling to keep them looking good and as golfers we should be more aware of the reasons behind these problems and therefore more tolerant towards the golf courses and their staff. All of our local golf courses are sewn with Bermuda grass on the fairways and in the rough because it can withstand extreme heat in the long summer months without the need for extensive watering BUT it does hibernate during the cold winter months. When the average night time temperature falls below 7 degrees the grass becomes dormant and loses that green colour and takes on a light yellow/brown colour which looks almost burnt and dry (but this is not the case) BUT is not good on the eye. A number of years ago a took a group of clients from Denmark to the lovely course at Lo Romero and stood looking over the signature 18th hole and they asked why I had brought them to a course where the grass was dying and I explained the reasons above. The following week I stood in the same spot and after a temperature increase over the previous week the courses was perfectly green. Greens are sewn with Rye or Bent Grasses which need constant attention and watering all year around but are badly affected by heavy rain, low temperatures and heavy foot traffic. On this side issue whoever invented the dimple sole golf shoes should be shot because if you have ever followed a group of golfers wearing them on wet or damp greens the surface resembles a 'waffle' so bring back studs I say for wet greens. Give our local golf courses a few weeks until the tempertures increase in March and April and they will be back to their best but until then try and be understanding with the green keepers and try and keep the moaning to the minimum. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Poor referee denies Torry CD Torrevieja .............. 0 Ontinyent CF ............... 2

T

ime is running out for Pedreno and his not so merry men, for this latest defeat has firmly struck another nail in their div 3 survival coffin!! It´s over 10 years since Torry last saw action in the Preferente division, but a return to local Alicante based football is now very much a reality. As they have not won since November, combined with goals having dried up completely, it´s no surprise really. Having said all that, arbitro Romero Perez won few friends inside Nelson Mandela Stadium yesterday, when he controversially gifted Onteniente their 2 goals. High flying Onteniente threatened early on when Rafeta executed an audacious 30 yard lob, which only just evaded the bar with keeper Buba well off his line. On 13 mins Torry should have equalised, but Lewis failed to find the target from an inch perfect Beltran right wing cross. Arbitro Perez bloomer numero uno arrived on 15 mins. How he failed to spot a blatant push on Torry midfielder Nica is beyond me, then within a blink of the eye Vicente had

deflected an Ivan shot into his own net. It was cruel, but hey, Spanish refs at this level are not the best!! To make matters worse, 15 mins later he completely broke the hearts of home players and fans alike. A thunderous shot from the right struck Lewis high on the arm inside the penalty area, and to everyone´s horror Perez awarded a penalty. There was no way Lewis could have prevented it striking his arm, and was justifiable devastated at the injustice. Up stepped Domenech to firmly strike the spot kick, brilliantly saved by penalty specialist Buba, before heading home the rebound to once more rub salt into Torry´s gaping wounds. Buba came to his sides rescue again moments later, superbly tipping behind another accurately placed long distance

chip shot, this time by Juanan. A Lewis cross from the left on 37 mins, found Luis Carlos at the far post, but alas he too failed to hit the target.

San Miguel golf society @ Las Colinas Thirty-eight members and 3 guests made it to Las Colinas for this year’s Colin Arkley trophy, played in honour of a much respected former Captain and President. Clear skies and a light breeze greeted players initially, with the wind getting up during the round. The course has been in better condition on previous visits, and the poor state of the greens and some fairways, along with the course being set up long, contributed to some pretty average scoring. Only 6 players broke 30 points, with the Steve Grundy with 33 points winning Colin’s trophy on countback. The day’s results, by category, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (26 on CB), 4th Pauline Hazell (26 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (29 on CB), 2nd Keith Stevenson (29 on CB) and 1st Marg Birtwistle with 30 points. Silver Category: 5th Theo Boelhouwer (25 on CB), 4th Hugh Reilly (26), 3rd Mike Jordan (27), 2nd Steve Davis (28), and 1st Steven Grundy with 33 points. Gold Category: 5th John Aitchison (31 on CB), 4th Andy Shaw (31 on CB), 3rd Steve Higgins (32 on CB), 2nd Paul Guest (32 on CB) and 1st Jamie Rorison with 33 points. The Abacus was won by Paul Cobain. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Eva Pettersson (5), Barry Roehrig (7), Pauline Hazell (10), Alan McDonald (14) and Darren Hancock (17). The Best Guest prize was won by Dave Blackburn with 28 points. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694 494 824 to find out more about the society and its weekly get-togethers.

The visitors were prepared to sit back in the 2nd half, safe in the knowledge that their hosts did not have the wherewithal to break a firm rear guard. And so it proved. Pastor provided the one and only moment to remember. Latching onto a through ball on 49 mins, he faced a 1 on 1 with keeper Raul managing a shot on target, only to see it cleared off the line by a defender. Bookings for Vicente, Martin and Javi Meca added to Torry´s woe, who now have the small matter of a lengthy trip to 2nd in the table Castellon next weekend. Vamos Torry.

Easy home win for Mare Nostrum A comfortable win for Torrevieja’s Mare Nostrum Handball Club at the Cecilio Gallego Sports Centre on Saturday evening when they beat Vila-Real by 41 – 28 in match 20 of their 30 game season. The game saw a quick start from Mare Nostrum who forged to a 7-1 lead in the opening 10 minues of the game. By half time the home side had established a 20-11

lead which at no time did they look like losing. Leading scorers for Torrevieja were Joaquín López (7) and Rafa Ballester (6). Mare Nostrum now look forward to games against Algamesi who currently sit in 3rd and Elche who occupy the runner up spot, with nothing less than two victory’s needed to keep them in the running for promotion.
