Salvemos Cala Mosca!
Over 500 people turned up at Playa Flamenca on Sunday morning to show their solidarity with the campaign to defend Cala Mosca, the last unspoiled stretch of the Orihuela Costa coastline. Residents and holidaymakers joined with Associations,
Political Parties and organised groups to demonstrate their opposition to the Orihuela Government plan for the construction of over 1500 new properties on the site. They included la plataforma Pro-Orihuela Costa; la FAOC (Federaciรณn de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa) and the Neighbourhood Associations Orihuela Costa Golf, Villamartin, Las Filipinas, Playa Glea, Calas de Campoamor, Altos del Pinar,
Cabo Roig Clean Up Committee, C.L.A.R.O, Podemos Orihuela Costa, Movimiento Ciudadano de la Zenia, A.M.P.A Playas de Orihuela, Cambiemos Orihuela, Somos Orihuela Costa and el A.M.P.A Los Dolses. The demonstration was held
less than a week after the EU Petitions Committee reopened its dossier on the project, announcing that it will oversee the environmental impact report provided by the constructor, ensuring that it fully complies with all environmental regulations. Continued on Page 2

The Euro-Chamber has also said that it will write to the Consell, the governmental body that will make the final decision on the project, demanding that it pays special attention to the scheme, and ensures that all of the environmental guarantees provided by law are fulfilled. This was confirmed by the Cambiemos Councillor Marta Guillén following her appearance in the Parliament, alongside former President of CLARO, Bob Houliston who was the first to denounce the project back in 2012. The current President of CLARO, Karl Falloni, said that it is absolutely ridiculous that the environmental impact report has been written by the builder himself so it is absolutely imperative that the EU take especial notice. The Committee President added that she would request the European Commission, responsible for the application of environmental law, to carry out its own investigation of the Environment Impact Study. "We are very happy with the response of the EU, and the fact that the matter has been brought to their attention once again. They have committed to overseeing the environmental impact statement and they will now urge the Conselleria to focus on Cala Mosca, "added the councillor. The decisions of the European Parliament Petitions Committee are very important. They ensure that no quick approval will be given to the building project which, before the meeting in Brussels, seemed imminent. The decisions ensure that the regional government of Valencia is aware of the political importance of the future of Cala Mosca and that the European Union will be watching over their shoulders to ensure that a rigorous examination of the building proposal be carried out before any decision is made. Implicitly, the decisions imply that before any final decision, the Petitions Committee should consider the issue again at a further

The constant demands of residents, environmental associations, and political parties, together with the intervention of the European Parliament, thanks to the request of CLARO, led to the temporary halting of the project in 2011. Orihuela Costa needs17million euro to bring flooding to an end
H
idraqua, the agency responsible for the Storm Water Master Plan on the Orihuela Costa, say that they have identified 12 situations and places in which poor urban planning disturbs the natural watershed, but the City Council say that they do not have the funding available to rectify the situation and they will have to rely on either European or state aid to put matters right. The cost of the repairs and the flood prevention measures would be in the region of 17 million euros although it could be as much as 22 million euros. The consultative document identifies 12 sites where, with each occurrence of torrential rain, accumulates water exceeding three meters in depth. This document will be publicly displayed in the coming weeks, and although we now have detailed information on what the exact problems are in terms of floods and their solutions for the very first time, according to Councillor Juan Ignacio Lรณpez-Bas (Cs), putting the theory into practice will not be easy. The reason, he says is that the City does not have the necessary funds to undertake these works, which despite being broken down into 12 different projects, many of them could not be implemented even in a 12 month period. The average amount for each exceeds one million euros, although there are a number of smaller tasks which will cost little more than 63,000 euros, as is the case in Mil Palmeras. Other more important work, such as those in La Zenia or Florida, are around 3.5 million euros each.
Lรณpez-Bas said that the City of Orihuela will therefore have to wait for "investment projects by European, state and some autonomic funds. He added that for the first time the authorities now know what the real needs are, where they are and their cost, since this is the very first time that such a study has been carried out. The manager of Hidraqua, Juan Jose Alonso, said that one of the main reasons for coastal flooding has been the replacement of the natural ramblas over the years by urban development, millions of tonnes of cement, streets and houses, as a result of which the natural water channel has been interrupted, causing these problems. Some of the areas most in need and their approximate costs: Areas adjacent to Campoamor beach euro 1,273.324 Avd Palmeras de la Playa, C/Colon and san Antonio, La Zenia euro 3,686.000 Playa Flamenca C1 and C2, Las Piscinas J1 and La Florida K1 euro 3,429.000 euro Los Pinos R2, Villarossa PAU 20, Peri Santa Barbara 3,182.000 C/Escorpiones, C/Nazaries PAU20 euro 1,416.000 Caraterra San Miguel, Las Filipinas, El Galan euro 1,838.000

New Arrival welcomed by Just Brass
JB
Band are well into the 2017 season with a number of concert planned both on the Costa Blanca South and North as well as new ventures with the Royal British Legion. However, the Bass section are more excited over their new arrival......a 'new' BBb Bass all the way from the UK. With the growing international interest in JB, the band has secured the services of a top class bass player from Norway leading to the need for an instrument. With the moneys earned over the year from raffles and drinks at concerts, kindly donated by Avalon, as well as Christmas Caroling, the Band managed to raise enough funds to purchase the Bass. With some nifty bidding on E-bay, a Bass was soon winging it's way from Yorkshire. Even more amazing is that the seller turned out to be an old school friend of the Euphonium player, Jayne. Mike Thornton (picture) said 'It's not brand new but
it's new to me. We'd have to sell a lot more raffle tickets to raise the £3,500 for a brand new Bass'. No-one in the band is paid, not even their MD Brian Webber and last year JB Brass Band donated over 1,000€ to various charities. The band continue to swell in numbers and are also happy to welcome a Euphonium player from Belgium, a Percussionist also from Norway as well as 2 new members from the UK since January. To complete all sections, the band are looking for Trombone players although anyone is welcome. The new Bass and players will make their debuts at the Band's first concert of the year 'A Celebration of Irish Music' on 18th March in Union Musica, San Miguel. Tickets are 5€ and information on concerts or the Band is available on www.justbrass.org
Celebration Concert!
Vivace Celebrates its 10th Anniversary Vivace Classical Choir is now well into rehearsals for its forthcoming 10th Anniversary “Celebration Concert”, with an evening of some of the favourite pieces sung by the choir over the years. Two performances of the concert will take place, the first in La Siesta Church on Friday 31st March at 7.30pm, and the second in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas on Saturday 1st April at 8.00pm. Over the ten years, the choir has sung works from four different centuries, by many composers, from the earliest work ,Vivaldi’s “Gloria” written 1715, to the latest, “The Armed Man” by Karl Jenkins, first performed in the year 2000. So the choice was extensive, but Musical Director Tom Pargeter has planned a fascinating programme of contrast, with extracts from religious works such as Handel’s “Messiah” and Mozart’s “Requiem”, glorious music from the world of opera with the wonderful Slaves’ Chorus from Verdi’s ”Nabucco”,
adding a little humour to the mix with an item from the Victorian parlour repertoire, and including the rousing chorus “O Fortuna” from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. There will certainly be something for everyone in the programme! After over 10 years in charge, Vivace’s Musical Director Tom Pargeter is handing over the baton after these two concerts. Starting with 16 singers in October 2006, Vivace now has some 60 members. Tom has really enjoyed the time, and hopes very much that the choir will continue to go from strength to strength, offering the opportunity for local singers to learn and perform major classical works. The concert in La Siesta Church will be on Friday 31st March, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance is €6 to be paid on the door. Doors will open at 7.00pm. From the very beginning, Vivace has been based in San Miguel de Salinas,

DID YOU PAY TAX WHEN YOU SOLD YOUR PROPERTY?
We
all have to pay Plusvalia Tax (Tax on the Increment of Urban Land Value) to our local Council when we sell a property. The Plusvalia Tax is calculated based on the cadastral value of the land, which has never stopped incrementing even though the value of urban land has diminished in the last few years. However, several Superior Courts of Spain, such as sentences 553/2012 of 22nd May 2012 and 310/2012 of March 22nd of the Administrative Chamber of Cataluna Superior Court: sentence 144/2015 of 13th July 2015 of the No 3 Administrative Court of Zaragoza: sentence of 26th January 2016 of the Administrative Chamber of Madrid Superior Court and, ,ore recently, sentence 520/2016 of 14th September 2016 of the Administrative Chamber of Valencia Superior Court, have ruled that the system used by the Town Halls to calculate the tax accrued is not correct, as it is based on the land incrementing its value each year and does not consider any other instances.
This means that many times this “increment in value is fictitious and it does not correspond with reality. During the last few years the value of the land not only has not increased, but in many instances it has actually decreased. Unfortunately, this Tax is compulsory, so we need to pay it first and then, if we can prove that the land did not increase in value, we can claim it back from the Town Hall, or we can claim part of the excess. If you have sold your property in the last 4 years or so and think that your Plusvalia Tax was too high, please do contact us. The Legal Team at ABC SOLICITORS will review the Plusvalia Tax that you paid at the time and help you claim it back. We look forward to hearing from you!
Lucid arrive on the Costa Blanca T

The Duo is called LUCID and the lead singer is the versatile Maisie who has a voice that is mature beyond her years. Last season she was wowing audiences along the Coast with a single Acoustic act that has won her a large following wherever she plays. Maisie has joined forces with Jac, a former Lead Guitarist with Snowblind. Jac is considered to be one of the best Guitarists on the Costas and has
had tremendous success with the previous Bands he has played for. So what will LUCID be doing. They will be playing a variety of popular songs that are sure to be favourites of the new audiences they will attract. Instruments to be used during the act will include acoustic guitar, lead guitar, the ukulele and the cajon!!! So where will they hold their debut. They will be at The Tavern, San Miguel playing on the big stage on Wednesday the 8th with a 9 o clock start. This Band is definitely not one to miss. Martin Bentley

Major fundraiser as building work gets La Mata Tower"in underway at Easy Horse Care Centre danger of collapse" As construction ramps up on a secure new boundary wall funded entirely by kind donors, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is calling for further donations to build the wall higher in a bid to better protect equines from winter winds and summer sun. Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding have re-opened the rescue centre’s major fundraiser and hope to raise a further €7000 to fund the extra height, dramatically improving the lives of dozens of their rescued equines. Said Sue: “Making the wall higher will give our horses shelter from the cold north winds in winter and, in the future, allow us to create very sturdy and large field shelters for extra sun and rain protection, using the boundary fence as the back wall.”
For the love of pancakes Last week the Chaplain of the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul Torrevieja, Father Richard Seabrook, hosted a Pancake Extravaganza at the Chaplaincy House to mark Shrove Tuesday and the last day before Lent. Lots of people from the seven churches that make up the Chaplaincy attended and Father Richard excelled himself with the making and tossing of the pancakes. Apart from a most delightful culinary experience and a chance for people throughout the Chaplaincy to meet up and chat, 242€ was raised for Chaplaincy funds.

The Matera Independent Platform (PIM) has publicly questioned the state of what it refers to as "one of our emblematic monuments" is found: the Tower of the Embarcadero of La Mata. The representatives of the group warned the Councillor of Beaches about the cracks that had appeared in the base of the Tower. The council responded by sending along surveyors who took photos and submitted a report on the state of the tower and necessary repairs. We were happy at the time as they acted very quickly.” But months later, as we wait for any further action, it seems that the cracks are getting bigger, therefore, in the opinion of PIM, the "danger of collapse is much greater than before and remedial work is absolutely necessary as a matter of extreme urgency.” The platform, which says that it represents the voice of the village, has appealed to politicians, historians, surveyors, and anyone else who has an interest in repairing the 14th Century tower, to" act now, or we will lose one of the most emblematic buildings in the region.” Although the original Torre de La Mata was constructed in the fourteenth century to defend the coastal populations from Berber attacks, there have been a number of reconstructions over the centuries, the most recent in the early 1980’s.

Weight Control using Fast Track Hypnosis I t's well past that time of year where we all gave ourselves our New Year's Resolutions where all the partying, over indulging in food and drink has resulted in the inevitable increase in our weight! Have you kept to your resolution? Too many people confuse hunger with appetite. Hunger is a real need whereas appetite is only a habit. The two are not the same! Appetite is provoked by suggestion while hunger is the message we send to our brain whenever the body needs essential nourishment. There are various reasons why a person can be overweight: People who overeat because of early programming by parents. People who overeat by comfort eating. People who overeat because of emotional problems FAST TRACK Hypnosis is ideal for helping people who want to
lose weight because of early programming or emotional problems.
If you want to lose weight, then using my method and Fast Track techniques, it can be a very successful way of helping you to achieve your target weight in ONE simple 30 minute session.
Cd’s are also provided so that by the constant repetition of positive suggestions the subconscious mind will be influenced and the bad eating habits will replaced by good eating habits. With the calming effect of hypnosis, suggestions are then implanted into the subconscious mind such as” high calorie foods will no longer have the same appeal to you and that you will enjoy low calorie foods. You will take a lot more interest in your own shape, fitness and vitality, etc” A good tip if you want to lose weight is to drink a pint of water about 15 minutes before each meal. Then divide your meal into 2 pieces, eat one portion, wait 5 minutes and then decide if you want the other half.

Sanchez says Mayor has no pride in his city
O
n three occasions during 2016, Sandra Sanchez, the Partido Popular councillor demanded an improvement to the maintenance of the busiest walk along the Torrevieja sea front, from el Hombre del Mar hasta Las Columnas She now says there has been no improvement whatsoever, as a result of which she is once again calling on the mayor to show some pride in one of the main tourist attractions in the city of Torrevieja. She says that the mayor, "is fully aware of the deteriorating
state of the most popular walkway in the city, both with regard to the street furniture, deteriorated litter bins, traffic signs and informative notices, as well as benches that are badly rusting and in need of restoration or replacement" With scarcely a month left before Holy Week, when the city will host a large number of tourists and visitors, the Mayor seems oblivious to the negative image that they will take away with them. “This is the most popular walk in the city and it is need of urgent attention” she concluded.

Celebrating ‘Womens Day’ across the region R edován will be commemorating Women's Day, which is celebrated on 8 March, with dozens of activities throughout the Community, using the motto Tantas que somos', “So Many We Are”, taken from a poem by Antonio Machado. The mayor Emilio Fernández and the councillor for Social Services, Nely Ruiz, outlined the programme of presentations, exhibitions and musical concerts for people of all ages. There will also be a coeducational theater show "The Secret Life of Moms", about the role of women in the family and in the home, which will be seen by 900 students. The mayor said that women continue to have the worst working and social conditions using the example of IBEX companies, in which "only 19% of those employed are women" or in many other laboor matters, with where women continue to receive much lower wages than men. The mayor said that the goal is to promote equality from
early age. In Orihuela the Councilor for Equality, Sabina Galindo, presented their programme during which she highlighted the Organic Agriculture Production course, currently being attended by 19 women, which ends on 31 March. The photography exhibition "Mujeres de Orihuela y Pedanías" got underway in the Sala Museo San Juan de Dios, on Thursday, the same day that UMH Professor Juana Aznar, presented a talk on "The value of care." The councilor also provided details of events and presentations at the auditorium in La Lonja, Gabriel Miró Glorieta, the María Moliner Library and on March 12 the Teatro Circo which will host the Play "Polvorones". Unfortunately there appeared to be no mention of any events taking place on the Orihuela Costa.

Charity lunch in aid of Huntingdon’s Disease
A magnificent 578 Euros was raised at Restaurante Giovanni's, Calle Pintor Serolla 28, Almoradi in aid of of the not so well known charity, Huntington's Disease Association, at a lunch enjoyed by 44 happy diners. The event was organised for the second year running by Margaret Tozer, whose brother-in-law, David suffers from HD and moved to Spain 3 years ago in the hope that the warmer climate and relaxed way of life would help with his condition. Restaurant owner “John” and his staff generously gave up their time for the afternoon and John donated many prizes, including vouchers for the winners of Play Your Cards Right and Open the
Envelope games. Huntington's Disease is a hereditary terminal illness affecting both men and women which destroys the pathways between the brain and the rest of the body, resulting in uncontrollable movements, loss of speech, incontinence, and loss of memory function. It also causes changes of personality and depression. The Disease destroys everything that makes us recognisable as human beings and there is currently no cure. More fundraising events are planned for the area; including a Traditional Afternoon Tea on 21st March and the ever popular Fun Quiz on 22nd April. Both to be held at the new premises of Cafe- Bar Almoradi, Calle Mayor 91. For info please contact Marion Smith on 651 043 681. Accompanied by more than 500 people, the activity was held for the purpose of "promoting the route as a tourist opportunity,
being the starting point of the route of the Camino de Levante to Caravaca de la Cruz, in its Jubilee Year ", said the mayor. The walk began around 8:00 am in the morning from the Oriolana Cathedral, where the participants picked up their documentation, along with a backpack with provisions, a T-shirt, oranges and an energy bar.
Throughout the morning the walkers continued along the river bank to the Murcian capital where the first stage ended in the Cathedral of Murcia, at which they were welcomed by the Councillor for the Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Tomás, as well as the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta.

Spangles Benefit Concert for Los Alcazares flood victims
Torrevieja Royal British Legion's Welsh Section celebrated St David's Day at Harry's bar in Quesada. A full Welsh menu was specially prepared by the resident chief and was enjoyed by all. The singing from the Welsh was great, with a special mention to Mr Brian Killey's singing of the Welsh favourite Myfanwy. Our resident comedian Mr Leo Wynn helped make the day a great success.
S
pangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus joined forces with the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Rondalla son del Mar Menor groups in a benefit concert to raise funds for those who lost everything in the devastating floods in Los Alcázares, just before Christmas. The auditorium was packed as Spangles followed the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion onto the stage. Spangles’ popularity continues to grow and they were able to invite their new ladies to join them in songs that they had already learned. Spangles finished their set with a debut performance of
'Eres Tu' which stunned the predominantly Spanish audience with a serious ‘goosebump moment’. All three groups came together for a finale of the Himno Independencia Municipal which celebrates the municipal autonomy of Los Alcázares, which was granted on 13 October 1983. “It was a pleasure and an honour to be included in this very significant event to help our local community and we are certain that this will lead to further collaborations in the future.” commented Spangles MD, Wendy Grant. On the night, the concert raised a 1475

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Mysterious Electrical Power Surge Over the years that I have been writing ‘Letters from the Atlantic’, it has become something of a two-way exchange of views, and I am always grateful to those expats who are happy to share their experiences. ‘Letters’ is often based on questions and comments that I receive from expats in several countries who, like myself, are faced with challenging issues from time to time. There are times when I think that I have slipped into an Alternative Universe, since no reasonable explanation or answer appears to be forthcoming. I suspect that many expats will know exactly what I mean as they deal with new laws, regulations, processes and bureaucracy in their newly adopted countries. I know from correspondence from readers that, on occasions, we all seem to battle against an issue that no one else seems to be aware of, or care about. For me, one example is the mysterious electrical power surge. Often, whilst cooking a meal, working on the computer or watching television, the power will switch off for no apparent reason. At first I used to think that these were power cuts, but I have since learned that it is a power surge, since all the other homes around me still have electricity. At other times, our neighbour will find that his power switches off, whilst ours is still working. I can understand why this may happen during a lightning storm, and even at times of heavy demand, such as meal times and excessive demand for air conditioning. However, when this occurs during quiet times and at night, I find this puzzling. Anyone who knows anything about power surges will know that
such surges can be very destructive. Unless appropriate gadgetry is provided to protect the circuit, appliances can be destroyed. This is the main purpose of the switch turning off when there is a power surge, but it can be so annoying. It is particularly frustrating when using a computer, for instance, which is why I now protect these items with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) box, which gives me just enough time to reset the power switch, or to correctly close down the computer and other delicate appliances. Sometimes, this performance can go on for some time, in which case we sit in darkness (if at night) for a while, before attempting to switch the power on once again, in the hope that all has settled down. We then may go for several weeks before the problems begin again. I have forgotten the number of times that I have left the house, boarded a flight somewhere, only to receive a text from the alarm company to report that the power in our house has failed. This then means that I have to call a very helpful friend, who has to go into our home to switch the power on again. I cannot leave it switched

By Bar rie Mahoney off because of food in the fridge and freezer. Often my friend will have to return to our house several times to restore the power, before it eventually settles down. Over the years, I have mentioned the problem to neighbours, who nod ambiguously, and tell me that it happens to them too, but they don't seem at all concerned about it. I have reported it to the electricity company on several occasions, only for them either to deny that there is a problem, to suggest that it is my fault and that the electric circuits in our home should be checked, or that if they have to come out to check there will be a hefty inspection charge. Some time ago, I asked an electrician to check that our circuitry was performing correctly, and I have also had the switch boxes replaced twice. On each occasion, I am told that all is working normally and that there is no problem inside or outside our property. One electrician told me that properties receive power in groups of three installations and that the power fluctuation happens to all three properties at the same time, but not necessarily to all the properties in the same street. I am no expert on matters electrical, and this explanation mystifies me. I am sure that by now, some readers will be identifying our home as the cause of the problem, but exactly the same thing happened in our previous home, an apartment just a few kilometres from our present home. Over the years that I have been on the island, no one so far has been able to satisfactorily explain why this happens and what can be done about it. The response of most people is merely to switch the power back on again, which is not easy when you are travelling away from home. Surely, in these high-tech times, there is a simple way of levelling out power to prevent surges from reaching customers? So, there we have it. If there are any electricians out there who can give me a reasonable and non-technical explanation of why this is happening, I would be most grateful. Similarly, I would also be interested to hear from other readers who may have the same problem and what they have done to correct it. They still retain the top stop but another loss to either El Capitan or the Jackals will see them toppled. El Capitan enjoyed a convincing away victory against Las Rosas who are currently propping up the bottom slot in Division A. The Jackals also had a good away win against the Bees who now sit just above Las Rosas. It must have been a good, close game at the Ale House as they secured a draw against the Mighty Massey’s.

Carp R Us The second match of the Spring Series was fished on Rio Segura at Benijófar. The club recently did a lot of work to re-open the pegs for match fishing, the stretch not having been used for matches for almost two years. Unfortunately, the fish didn’t seem to be that interested in being caught, despite it being a beautiful spring day. Tom Marshall won with a single carp of 3.80kg caught using maggot, second with 2.78kg was Roy Buttress, third was Andy Foden with 1.40kg and fourth Mark Foden with 1.32kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact us through the Facebook page, the website or calling the club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634 379 081

Meanwhile in Division B, the ladies of the Jaguars managed to stave off the high scoring of the Hen’s teeth Coq’s lads in a fraught match that finally ended with a 7-5 win for the lasses. Sorry lads, you only had 5 and it may have been the crucial factor as the Jaguars took advantage of the diminished player triple and double games. The Tavern Oldies and Evolution also chalked up another win, taking the latter 5 points beyond their nearest rivals and making them strong favourites for topping the Division at the end of the season. The Queens took 4 games off them though so Evo’s are not invincible and hopefully the Jaguars with make a dent in their tally next week. Winnie’s little wonders at the Hen’s Teeth put up a valiant effort and defeated the Hellraisers into bottom slot this week. Here are still 5 league games left though and 5 wins for any team will see their tally soar by 10 points so it is still all very much to play for. The venues will be selected for the Pairs semi’s-finals on the 16th March and players’ captains will be notified next week. I will update the 180’s scores for next week’s report as I have to dash now for the airport. School reunion this evening!!!!

Our winning rink was Beryl Styring, Norman Adcroft and Alex Morrice who mastered the conditions to win by 18 shots to 13.The overall shots score being 85-131.However, despite this loss the Apollos still have a good chance of finishing as league runners up. Alfies Golf Society at El Valle by Shaun Staplehurst 32 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to El VALLE GC (who had hosted a pro comp only days earlier) for the February meeting. The course was in very good condition, the greens were firm, very fast and true and the very blustery wind made scoring very hard and points were hard to come by. Scoring was obviously low and only 3 players managed to hit 30 points or more, so congrats to the trio. Our winner of the day was Pavla Serakova, with 36 stableford points. Second place went to Derek Fleet with 31 stableford points Third place went to Steve Bicks with 30 points Best Guest went to George Bond with 27 stableford points Nearest the pin on hole 9 – Sponsored by ‘The Celtic Drop bar’ was not won and will roll over Nearest the pin on hole 15 – sponsored by ‘The Street restaurant Winner Pavla ‘went to Joe Serakova Murphy Nearest the Pin in 2 shots on hole 11-sponsored by ’Alfies Bar’ went to Joe Murphy Nearest the pin in 3 shots on hole 7-Sponsored by ’The Auld Dubliner

The Pintos started their week with a home fixture against La Siesta Apollos and what a glorious day it was. It was a tight match on play, with most of us I think playing some good woods, but also some that we could hardly believe, a little tricky I think. But we did hold off the opposition to take the rinks 5-1 and the overall shots. Meanwhile the broncos were playing away at Horadada against the Falcons and had a tough match, but played well enough to come away with 2 rinks, always a good away result. Friday found the Mustangs playing at Quesada against the Swifts and a very pleasant morning it was in good company. As you would expect the Swift took advantage of the home mat, but the Mustangs did manage to come away with 2 rinks and not a great deficit in overall shots. June Whitworth, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 20-22. Bob Morgan, Keith Cunningham and David Whitworth 15-18. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 12-21. Irene Thomson, Jim Taylor and Eddie Thomson 18-14. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Geoff Jones 8-22. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 21-11. Meanwhile the Raiders entertained Greenland Cedars and both played well to take 3 rinks each, with the Raiders taking the overall shots by a small margin. Gill Bartlett, Bob Easthope and Rob Clark 19-12. Ann C Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Bob Taylor 21-13. Pam Harris, Malc Elmore and Brian Harris 23-7. Marion Haynes, Diane Yates and Dave Haynes 12-14. Ria Dukker, Peter Blackburn and Keith Longshaw 14-20. Tricia Elsam, Tony Robinson and Graham Day 11-28. La Marina Golf Society at Font de Llop We met at this beautiful course to play in the annual captain versus vice-captain trophy. This year there was more edge to the competition as our captain and vice - captain, Elspeth and Alan Craig are fairly well known to each other. The weather was glorious and the course in its usual excellent condition and these factors helped towards some high scoring. Winner of the gold award was Bill Stobo with 38pts but this was eclipsed by Sarah McCabe who won the silver award with 39 pts. Both are therefore looking forward to a handicap cut. Winners of the nearest the pins were Bill England, Vic Smith, Bill Stobo and Barry Thorogood. Addition of individual scores resulted in an extremely close-run result with the captain's team triumphing by 290 pts to 288 pts. Amazingly the vice -captain didn't ask for a recount. Our next meeting is at Altorreal on 16th march, first tee 1032 at a cost of 40 euros. Entry sheet is on the board at the la marina sports centre or contact Alan Craig by e- mail or on 965077204. We have a quiz night on 14th march 7.00 for 7.30. As usual the cost is 8 euros including either meat pie or fish, both with chips. Please contact Elspeth on the above number if you wish to attend.

MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘New Sierra Golf Course’ A few week ago I had to report on the sad demise and closure of La Peraleja so it is good to be able to give you some good news about the re-opening of a golf course called New Sierra Golf. About 10 years ago Sierra Golf opened as a 9 hole golf course on a pay and play basis and to start with even had an honesty box. The course is located just off the C-3319 Murcia Balsicas highway on the La Tercia road. Unfortunately at the time it was in the middle of what can only be described as a building site and was not so appealing to golfers and closed some four years ago. Now under new ownership and with the surrounding area now substantially complete and with a better infrastructure the course has been re-born as New Sierra Golf. The course is still a 9 hole layout of 5406 metres or 5946 yards from the yellow tees making up a par 36 course of par 3,par 4 and par 5 holes. They have done considerable work to the bunkers and now have a fleet of 45 buggies. Now that we have entered the high season period with prices at their highest this may be an ideal time to try the course at an affordable price. The current prices that we can offer to the public are: 9 Holes €20 - 18 holes €35 2 players and buggy 9 holes €50 2 players and buggy 18 holes €85 We are sure you will enjoy the course and services that they have too offer so call Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on the number below to mak a booking today. El Plantio 2 Golf Society suffer an 'Oscar' moment The last Tuesday of the month is always the 'Medal' for El Plantio 2 Golf Society. On 28th February, 19 members competed on a pleasant spring day, which gradually turned windier as the round progressed. An 'Oscar' moment occurred when prize presentations were being made. Just as the winner was ready to make his acceptance speech and receive his trophy, it was discovered that a mix-up in the scoring on one card elevated an 'also ran' into 1st place, and the subsequent demotions resulted in your correspondent going from 3rd place to 4thand out of the prizes. I did not demand a recount. Nearest the pins : Hole 2, Martin Rickman and Hole 5, John O'Brien. 3rd Place - Handicap 15, Dave Southwell, 59 Shots . 2nd Place - Handicap 6 , John O'Brien, 58 Shots. 1st Place - Handicap 4, Ian Craig, 58 Shots on C/B. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230

Pastor double earns Torry another vital victory CD Torrevieja .............. 2 CD Bunol ..................... 0
Molina on his Torrry home debut
T
orry manager Pedreno elected to make minimal changes to last weeks winning side at Castellon. In came centre back Sergio Duran (making his club debut), replacing injured Martin, determined to build on last weeks sound foundations in the quest for survival. And it worked. For the first time this season, Torry recorded back to back victories, this time against a side that sit just above them in the table. You have to go back to 6 Nov before a home victory at Nelson Mandela Stadium appears on the results list, a narrow win over Silla. Confidence is now sky high, at such an essential time when fellow relegation sides are on the agenda. This victory over Bunol could be a springboard to a much needed turn of fortunes, for next on Weds 8 Mar, Torry make the trip to lowly Muro, before another home Sun match on 12 Mar, ko 1145, welcomes Alzira as the visitors.
For the 2nd consecutive match, Lewis played an absolute blinder, competing with Aussie bound Pastor for man of the match. Twas the latter who opened the scoring on 36 min, twisting and turning before firing a scorcher past a bemused Bunol keeper Joan from just inside the box. Lewis forced Joan to make a superb finger tip save towards the end of a first half, which Torry just about deserved their slender lead. Another LewisPastor combination engineered Torry´s 2nd
goal on 52 mins, bringing the success starved fans to their feet in wild celebrations. It required an acrobatic save by Jose Carlos to deny Bunol a consolation goal, and special mention must be given to Sergio Duran and Dani Salazar, who were rocks in a well organised Torry defence. Another booking for Javi Meca was the only blot, on what proved to be a day to savour.

San Miguel Golf Society at Hacienda del Alamo
Bogeys Medal Shield 2nd Round. The long course, dry with very tightly cut and somewhat bare fairways and greens a million miles away from the slickness of those at Lo Romero last week, found many out. Gold category players with their generally longer hitting and more consistent play faired best, all five category winners beating those taking the prizes in the other categories, with the exception of Bronze’s Chris Hamblett who, along with John Osborne and best of the day Robin Eastman, was one of only three to break par. The day’s medal results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Ralph Tilbrook (84 on CB), 4th Carmel McCann (82), 3rd Marg Birtwistle (78 on CB), 2nd Norman McBride (78 on CB), and 1st Chris Hamblett with 71. Silver Category: 5th Roger Webb (82), 4th Scotty Philips (80), 3rd Phil de Lacy (79 on CB), 2nd Ivor Turkington (79 on CB) and 1st, for the 2nd week in a row in his category, Brian Mulligan with 77. Gold Category: 5th John Aitchison (75), 4th Humphrey Kelleher (74), 3rd Tony Sims (72), 2nd John Osborne (71), and 1st, with the day’s best return, Robin Eastman with 70. The Abacus was won, due to the early departure of the true winner, by Keith Wickham. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Robin Eastman (5 and 12), Andy Shaw (8) and Keith Wickham (15). THE ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY @ SAURINES We met the Monday night prior to this society event to organise the next days events. We had a full compliment of members and welcomed back Kedric Rhodes after his long absence due to breaking his leg. We also welcomed a couple of new members to the society showing how this society is growing my strength to strength, welcome boys. We all met for breakfast at The Orange Tree, Cabo Roig before setting off for the golf course. On arrival we discovered that one member had to withdraw due to illness, causing us to change the format for the day. It was nice to be back at Saurines after its long closure due to the extreme weather we had before Christmas. The course was in good condition and the weather even better with sunshine and only a slight breeze. Even allowing some brave souls to wear shorts. We then all returned to home base, The Orange Tree bar and restaurant xfor refreshments and
prize giving. We must thank Chris and his staff for the service and beautiful stew. The winners on the day, as shown in the picture, were John Fleming, John Downie, Trevor Rollason and Andy Shuttle with 96 points, 2nd were Simon Sharples, Jack Sheridan, John Burgess and Stuart Robertson with 88 points. NTP´s went to Chris Blown (6th), John Burgess (14th) and Pete Curly (18th). After his recent improvement in form John Fleming received a cut to his hándicap, which id dropping on a regular basis. Well played John. The next society event is on Tuesday 7th March, we meet between 5pm-6pm the Monday prior to pay and organise the day. The entry sheet is available within the restaurant for members and guests to entry. Or email us on orangetree@hotmail.es Details of future events can be found within the golf section of the restaurant website at www.orangetree-caboroig.com
