Provincial Coastal Service supports opening of Aguamarina Paseo
espite the Coastal Authority now confirming the actions of the Orihuela Council to remove the wall connecting Cabo Roig with Aguamarina were correct, the PSOE has criticised the council’s "mismanagement" of the situation which they say has created an "unnecessary conflict" with the residents of the Bellavista I Urbanisation. They made the statement following the receipt of a letter
D
from the Provincial Service of Coasts informing the Orihuela Government that they consider the passageway to be “a zone of easement of transit” and therefore endorse the decision adopted in 2015 by the Previous government team to demolish the wall, which was first built by the residents of the Bellavista I Urbanisation twenty years ago, cutting off the thoroughfare between the two coastal areas. Although only a hundred metres in length the closure of the passageway meant a detour of over 2km for anybody wishing to continue their route along the seafront promenade. Continued on Page 2

Aguamarina Walkway Continued from Page 1 The letter states that the dwellings of the aforementioned urbanisation "are not affected by the zone of easement of transit" whereas the parcel of discord "does not invade the terrestrial public domain” although the residents continue to argue the contrary. The letter also says that this should now prevent the construction of a wall that would again block the passage. However the situation is still unclear following the councils failure to appeal against the court’s ruling that the land is private and any walkway should run along the front of the cliff face. PSOE Councillor María García said that the failure of the government team not to appeal the judgment has created a problem with the Bellavista resi-
dents, who continue to state their intention to recover the passageway, believing that the Elche court decision came down firmly in their favour." The Councillor also confirmed that she currently is unaware of any negotiations being carried out by the City Council and the residents of the Bella Vista urbanization stating that the expropriation of this land would be very expensive for the municipal budget. Local pressure group FAOC (Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa) were quick to pick up on the PSOE statement saying that they will be writing to the Provincial Service of Coast this week requesting that access the passageway be formally acknowledged and protected so that the route can continue to be enjoyed by the many thousands of residents and visitors to the area in the future.

Sunshine all the way for Línea Directa Nationals Let battle commence as bowlers from Tenerife and Quesada get the tournament underway
G
reenlands Bowls Club was host to the Opening Ceremony of the 23rd National Bowls Championships, sponsored once again by leading insurer Línea Directa. Taking place in beautiful sunshine representatives of the 20 or more competing clubs were all resplendent in their club colours, as they paraded in front of a healthy and supportive crowd, at a venue decked out with National and Regional flags. The ceremony was attended by senior representatives of the National Bowls Federation as well as Línea Directa, who had travelled down to the event from Madrid, and a number of other local sponsors. Following the parade of clubs, umpires and Spanish International players, Spain National Director, Bob Donnelly, welcomed the bowlers and all of the guests and spectators to the championships. He gave particular thanks to the tournament sponsors Línea Directa who were supporting the championships for the second year. He said how delighted he was to have such a major international company endorsing the 2017 tournament and hoped the relationship would continue in future years. He also thanked the sponsors of the individual disciplines, Greengauge Surfaces, Avalon Funeral Plans, Seagate Wealth Management,
CS Bowlswear and Quirónsalud Healthcare as well as the two host clubs, Greenlands and Quesada BC as well as the Leader Newspaper, all of which were making a significant contribution to the success of the tournament. Patricia responded on behalf of Línea Directa by wishing all of the competitor’s success in their efforts, as everybody looked ahead to yet another successful tournament. Following the National Anthem John Muldoon, now the proprietor of Quesada Bowls Club and himself a former National Director, then handed over the bowling green to the tournament committee after which a number of the sponsors delivered the opening bowls. Players, spectators and sponsors then retired for refreshments following which the first competitive action of the tournament got underway with the mixed triples event. Now, at least for the successful competitors there follows an arduous two weeks of bowling, while for those not so lucky there is always the opportunity to renew old acquaintanceships and to make new friends. The tournament runs until 21st May at Greenlands Bowls Club. Entry is absolutely free with matches starting at 10am. It then switches to Quesada Bowls Club on the 22nd
May where it remains through to the finals, presentations and the closing ceremony in 2 weeks’ time on 27th May. The two Blue Ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies Singles, get underway on Thursday with Martin Foulcer and Anne Eagle both hoping to retain their National titles. Abuse of mobiles by San Miguel Council La asociación de vecinos “San Miguel Arcángel” of San Miguel de Salinas has asked the mayor for details on the allocation and cost of the 64 mobile telephones that are assigned to council staff. They say that the number currently in use equates to one for every single public employee, which they feel is extremely excessive. The issue of mobiles came to the fore in the municipal plenary in March on the occasion of the denunciation of opposition groups for the undue private use of the municipal mobile device assigned to UPYD councilor, María José Costa Medrano. The association, which considers the number of mobile phones excessive, insists that taxpayers have the right to know the use and cost these devices.
Police Training day on Jihadi Terrorism The former secretary general of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, was in Orihuela Last Sunday to pay tribute to Miguel Hernandez in the year commemorating the 75th anniversary of the poet’s death. The politician visited the House Museum of Hernandez, where he has had a brief meeting with militants and PSOE supporters. On his arrival members of the Association 'Social Forum' Orihuela and the group 'Theater Expression' read verses penned by the poet including 'Song of the soldier's husband' and 'Last Song'. Sánchez has also signed the Museum Visitors Book of the Casa Museo, where he left his mes-
sage: "To the people of Orihuela, to the example of commitment, sensitivity, dedication given by their celebrated poet, hoping that we will all build a World more just." At the door of the Casa Museo he made the anticipated political speech where he reproached the PP government for cuts in education, particularly subjects such as humanities, literature, arts and philosophy. Following his visit to the Miguel Hernández House Museum, the Orihuela Socialists presented Sanchez with a replica of the mural painted in the San Isidro neighborhood by Pepe Azorín dedicated to the 'Paloma Atada'.
The Councilor for Citizen Security, Mariola Rocamora, attended a seminar on Wednesday dealing with the threat of Jihadi Terrorism in the area. The conference was organized by the Orihuela Local Police and held in the municipal library Maria Moliner.
During the day members of the Information Group of the Civil Guard of Alicante, which specialises in Jihadi Terrorism, dealt with two current issues, the origin and evolution of Jihadist Terrorism and the current situation of the threat within Spain. Rocamora also explained that the purpose of the day was that "the agents acquire knowledge to be enable then to better carry out their work and daily and to be able to prevent possible future threats". The training day was attended by about 70 agents of the various security forces and bodies of the Vega Baja, including the National Police, Civil Guard and Local Police in the province of Alicante and in The Region of Murcia.

Thieves target Horse Rescue Centre
T
hieves have again targeted a Spanish non-profit horse sanctuary, stealing an expensive water pump and tools – many of which were donated by kind supporters.
The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre robberies came as co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding rescued another two ponies, bringing the number of equines in their care to 104. Sue and Rod first noticed tools disappearing in January, but were shocked when a water pump worth €700, used to pump water from flooded pastures after heavy winter rains, was stolen last month. The Weedings, who last year launched a major fundraiser to better secure their boundary after a similar spate of robberies, suspect the thieves were familiar with the rescue centre’s layout and specifically targeted the expensive pump. “They certainly knew it was there. It wasn’t in the yard, it was in a private part of our garden. You feel a bit defenceless, a bit vulnerable, the fact that people just feel like they can come in and take whatever they want,” Sue said. Electrical and carpentry tools, including an angle grinder and circular saw, have also gone missing – hampering Rod’s efforts to perform critical ongoing maintenance work at the sanctuary, including building the centre’s secure new boundary wall. As work on the 218-metre boundary wall ramps up, the Weedings have called for extra donations to help complete the project and safeguard their animals. With almost €16,000 already raised, just €4000 more is needed – even small €5 dona- Perlita was tions help. Donations can be made at: easy- rescued just horsecare.net/donate/support-our-fence- 3 weeks ago fundraiser. The call came as a beautiful 22-year-old mare named Perlita, which means “little Pearl” in Spanish, was surrendered to the rescue centre on April 22 after her ageing owner became too frail to care for her. Just two weeks later, on May 5, Easy Horse Care worked with Andrea’s Animal Rescue to save a 7-year-old pony stallion
abandoned on a piece of wasteland without food. Named Solo, the pony’s face is injured from wearing a crude string halter. Solo was seized by Cartagena police then transported the hour north to Easy Horse Care by Andrea’s Animal Rescue – a great example of two nonprofit rescue centres working together. Sue said the arrival of two more ponies have reminded the Weedings why they continue to endure obstacles such as the robberies: “It’s the love and the passion of what we’re doing that fuels us.” The Weedings will now also install CCTV cameras at their rescue centre. Sue expressed gratitude to Bill Murray and Paul Swift of Be Safe, who kindly offered to install the cameras at cost price. The cameras will be located at strategic points to capture footage identifying thieves well before they can dismantle the cameras. Sue and Rod also hope to replace their stolen pump and tools and said any donations would be gratefully received. “Donations are very much appreciated because that allows Rod to continue our building and maintenance projects,” Sue said, adding, “It isn’t about us. It’s about all the horses, ponies and donkeys that we can save and about the changes we can make to animal welfare in Spain.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Anyone interested in making a donation, becoming a long-term sponsor, or volunteering at the rescue centre or in the charity shops can call Sue on 652 021 980. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. A medley of male voices
A large group from ADAPT took the opportunity on Sunday to join the MABS Race for Life in memory of past ADAPT members who are no longer with us. This was a celebration of some wonderful people who will always be fondly remembered by their friends in the association. It was a lovely sunny day for the race which was more like a ramble for most of the group with lots of chatter and laughter and not much perspiration and with the incentive of tea and coffee (or whatever) at the finish. By David Stokes of davidstokesphotography.co.uk.
A
short while ago in a photography magazine, I read an interview with a recently retired professional photographer. He was asked if he thought Digital Photography had spoilt the true art of photography. ‘I don’t think so,’ he replied. ‘In fact, the advent of digital replacing film has raised the bar’. In these articles I will aim to set out ways to improve your own photos by having a better understanding of how to use your digital camera.
We can do this in two ways. We can learn how to use all the main features the camera offers. Most people just leave the camera in automatic mode, or one of the scene modes (which are variations of automatic; portrait, sport, close-up etc). These modes work reasonably well in many situations, but often good photo opportunities are lost because the camera couldn’t cope.
LEADER
Over the coming months I will be writing regular articles covering many of the basic issues that ensure your pictures are more creative and satisfying. Next time I will begin with a guide on how to choose a new camera. Subsequent articles will cover subjects about the various settings on the camera – focusing, and metering, aperture and shutter speed for example, and how to use them in different situations. I will also be covering some of the principles of good composition.
This article is the first of a monthly series about digital photography, written for The Leader.
We ordinary mortals can also benefit from this new technology, and make our everyday photos of holidays and family a much more satisfying record.

Snapshots to Great shots
These days, even the cheaper compact cameras have amazing facilities to enable the untrained photographer to take pictures that they could not have achieved with a film camera. And of course, there is so much you can do to improve the photo further by using computer software. This has meant that because the standard of photographs created by enthusiasts is so much higher, the professionals have had to become even better!

In the meantime, how can you gain more knowledge of photography, apart from ploughing through terminally boring and confusing manuals?
I run one-to-one courses
Try to find and angle at which the background is not distracting For example, recently I was sitting across the room from my daughter-in-law with grandson on her lap. Immediately behind them was a large window with the early afternoon sun streaming in. Had I taken the photo on automatic or portrait mode, the bright backlight from the window dominating the picture would have probably meant that their faces would have come out so dark as to be barely discernible. But I took it using what is called spot metering, and I got a lovely picture of them. So, there are many situations when taking a photo on automatic results in a poor photo that you would delete. However, with a little knowledge of your camera you could set the camera to suit, and not miss a good photo opportunity.
With that in mind, together with Paul Ashton, I started Photogenics Photography Group, which meets once a month at La Herradura Restaurant Los Montesinos, for those people who have been on one of our courses, or who are likely to do so in the future. We have a different print theme each meeting, with as many people participating as possible, with the aim of learning more about photography from each other in a friendly social atmosphere. We also cover photographic topics with talks and practical sessions. If you are interested to come, please get in touch (see contact details below). Then there is the Torrevieja Digital Camera Club (‘TDCC’) which meets at PALS Club, La Siesta, from 6pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month. TDCC has been established for over ten years, and welcomes new members of all ages and abilities. Each meeting includes talks on various topics followed by discussion, a members print competition with judges comments and members voting the winner, as well as plenty of time to socialise and have a glass of wine too.
Secondly, you can remember always to look around for the best composition.
The club also organises trips and social events. Their website is www.tdcc.es.
I am sure that all of us have photos where we just asked a friend or relative to smile, and shot the photo, only to find later that Auntie Mildred has a power station chimney seemingly protruding from the top of her head! Looking around first, then taking it from a different angle would have made a much better picture, and whilst that example is bit extreme, considered composition always makes a big difference to a

Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
‘immigrants’? Personally, I don't think I have ever heard the community being referred to as anything but ‘immigrants’, so why is it any different for myself and Brits living in the Canary Islands or the Costa Blanca?
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
By now, readers will probably think that I am being unnecessarily over pedantic about two simple words. No doubt I will also be accused of being ‘politically correct’, but words and definitions do matter, because they link to meaning, understanding and our subsequent attitudes to others. If I use the word ‘expat’, am I referring to well off, and fortunate foreigners who have made a temporary move to a hot and sunny country, only to enjoy sipping gin and tonics on their terraces all day? I am certainly not referring to refugees from Syria or Africa fleeing for their lives, travelling across stormy seas with little more than the clothes that they are wearing. However, are we not the same? Does it not really all boil down to a question of luck of where we happen to have been born and the opportunities that we have been given in life?
“Life’s Too Short To Stuff a Mushroom” I often think of that throwaway and impatient comment by the author, Shirley Conran, that “life’s too short to stuff a mushroom”. It is a quote that often occurs to me when I am confused, bewildered or reach a dead end in an argument that I am having with myself. I had one of these “mushroom moments” a few days ago. I’ve been uneasy about using the term ‘expat’ for many years. This confusion and conflict came to a head during the height of the migrant crisis when I began to see more clearly than ever before that there is no real difference between an ‘expat’ and an ‘immigrant’. As I have been writing a series of articles for ‘expats’ for some years, and published a book called ‘Expat Survival’, as well as running a popular website of the same name, it did seem an unnecessary complication and expense to change the title to ‘Immigrant Survival’, and so I left the issue on the ‘back burner’ to stew. I am well aware that the subject of whether British ‘expats’ living in Spain, France, Italy etc. are expats or ‘immigrants’. Personally, I am very happy to be known as a ‘European Immigrant’, for that is what I guess I am. For me, the term ‘expat’ sounds colonial and temporary, whereas being an ‘immigrant’ sounds as if it is a long-term commitment, or even permanent. However, if we think about it, we are no different to the three million or so European immigrants currently living in the UK, yet we never refer to them as European,
Spanish or French expats, do we? I am aware that a debate over the subject can cause heated arguments over dinner, or drinks in the local ‘expat’ bar. If in doubt as to the true meaning, it is always a good idea to check the Oxford dictionary, which in this case defines an expat “as a person who lives outside their native country”. It stems from the Latin “ex” meaning “out” and “patria” meaning native country. So am I, and others like me, an ‘expat’ or an ‘immigrant’. Personally, I am still confused… Let us now consider the good people living in Boston, Lincolnshire, which has become a pinnacle of welcome for Polish and Romanian people living in the UK. Do the locals refer to them as ‘expats’ or
If we accept that immigrants are expats too, maybe it is a question of degree? Expats, in the traditional sense, usually have a choice of whether to return to the country of their birth or to stay in their adopted country, whilst many immigrants simply have no choice over their future. Instead, maybe the term ‘lucky immigrant’ is a better term to describe those that have a choice in the matter, of moving for the sake of a better job, more money or a better lifestyle. This is in contrast to those immigrants who have no choice, but to attempt to escape poverty and persecution at whatever personal cost. All this thinking really is hard work on a sunny afternoon, and in the end I am not sure that it matters that much, as the two terms are not mutually exclusive. So, I have decided to continue to use the term ‘expat’, at least for the time being, mainly to avoid having my books reprinted. After all, sometimes life really is just too short to stuff a mushroom. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON
LEADER
By Simone de Lacy
Euronics Darts Presentation Night by Simone de Lacy It was another great season of friendly darts with winners from right across the league gaining individual and team awards. Sixteen teams from Villamartin, El Galan, Blue Lagoon, Los Dolces, Rioja Centre and San Miguel have played one another since last October to see who’s got the skill and nerve to be top team of the league and also win singles and pairs awards. With many more ladies in the league this season it seemed a good idea to introduce a ladies’ pairs competition, a first for this league I believe. We also had a new team, Las Rosas from San Miguel and lots of new and accomplished players to give the veterans a run for their money. A total of 16 players gained at least one ‘180’ and Super Shaun Smith of the Hub Hyenas bagged a total of 8 of the blighters! 180/171 achievers
The most coveted team award is that of Winners of League A and this year it was won by last year’s Runners Up, The Hub Hyenas who had a total of 38 Match points. Close behind them and coming joint 2nd with 37 match points were last year’s winners, El Capitan sharing it with the Junction Jackals, who also won the prised Team KO Cup. The Junction’s ladies team also did very well, winning the ladies singles (top 4 slots) the Ladies Pairs, Ladies merit Award and finishing runners up of Division B. The Porter House Bees (new formed team) also had a great haul of the spoils, winning the Auxiliary Team KO cup, Men’s Singles and Men’s Pairs. Golden Graham of the Tavern Oldies deservedly won the Men’s Merit award and I can still hear the whoops and whistles when the Pint Depot Queens scooped the League A Joint Runners Up El Capitan and Junction Jackals
, Ladies Pairs Runners Up d an ijn Hennie Oortw (HTC) Winnie McKay
Team Merit award for having improved so much this year! Well done your highnesses. ard Aw tit er M The 155 strong event was held at Las Ramblas Golf Club Ladies ey prepared a marvellous Spanish style buffet and allowed Winner - Lesl Eagles us to put up two free standing boards for the Blind Team KO competition. This was introduced last year into presentation night and was another huge success. This year 8 Teams of 7 players randomly drawn from all team entrants had a knock out match draw, playing 1001, one leg. The winners, captained by Aroldas Klimonis received 20 eu per player, and the runners up (captained by Simon Williams) received 10 eu p.p. It was so good to see the camaraderie of these newly formed teams getting along and encouraging each when the scores were high and the finishes nailed. There were one or two wayward shots (Joy Gorman!) and some dancing on the ockey (Sonya Copper, Graham Parker) as DJ Steve belted out some corkers! Chairman Alan Nash and his ‘Angles’ (Debbie, Gilly, Yvonne & Simone) were very pleased that the whole night and indeed this season was so well enjoyed and look forward to running the league again. With thanks to all the bars that let us throw sharp objects with impunity in your establishments and a huge thank you to our league sponsors, Euronics, the electrical shop in Blue Lagoon!

hursday saw the club visit the Embalse de Ojos at Blanca for the first round of the summer series. This is probably one of the most picturesque venues we fish but, unfortunately, fish-
ing can be very hard, as the other clubs in the area recently found. On this occasion, the carp and barbel failed to appear at all, only small (very small) bleak were caught. First equal were Steve Fell and Doug Hornblow with 0.80 kg, third was Tom Marshall with 0.60 kg and fourth was Steve Collins with 0.56 kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

Paddys Point Golf Society We had a good turnout for our new Captain's Drive In at Hacienda Riquelme Golf and despite not having picked up a club for almost a year Rory managed to boom one off the first tee much to his relief. It's great to see him back on the fairways. The course, in general, was in good condition but the numerous bunkers spoiled many a scorecard. We were, as always, well looked after back at Paddy's so thank you Rory, Hazel and all your special staff. NEAREST THE CAPTAIN'S DRIVE - Pat Rowan. LONGEST DRIVE Gretta Lambe. NTP hole 5 - Marie Fegan, hole 7 - Derek Burgess, hole 15 - Jim Fegan, hole 17 - Alan Cuddihy. The 2's Pot was won by Derek Burgess. BEST GUEST Gretta Lambe 37pts. 3rd Irene Fitzpatrick 36pts, 2nd Shaun P Murphy 36pts c/b, Winner Jim Fegan 39pts. Our next outing is to RODA on 14th June. La Marina Report by Barry Latham Just a quick word about the Annual 4 Nations event last Saturday at Monte Mar. La Marina was represented by Lynne Armitage, Wendy and Barry Latham playing for Ireland and we won our rink which helped Ireland become the winners for the second year running. I don’t have an Irish accent but I did have a pint of Guinness about ten years ago. Many thanks go to Stewart Hamill for all the hard work he puts in over the year. Not much good news about our VCL game at Vistabella on Monday. Nobody will bet on us winning the League now but we tried and in the 12-0 beating and there were some close results with two sides only losing by one or two shots. Our next match was again at Vistabella but playing the Saxons and didn’t we do well, nearly doubled our points total with a 7-7 draw. Some great games with the overall score going to the last wood bowled. Margret Finlayson needed all her skill to win 21-20. Terry and Jean Perchard, Mike Smith and Margaret Sadler had a good game to win 17-12. John Rae made up for Monday by having the highest winning rink with Tom Spencer, Garth Slater and Dave O’Sullivan 22-12. Three rinks all and overall score tied. A good win for the Pilots with a score of 10-4. One trip won lost by one and another won by one. The winning one was Terry and Jean Perchard and Paul Tregoing 13-12. Sue Daniels, John Rae and Jean Tregoing won 17-14 and not to be outdone Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Dave O’Sullivan also won 26-17 while John Morgan came out highest winning trip with Tom Spencer and Gina Hindle.

Playing away to San Miguel Christians they achieved four wins and a draw, it was a close affair but got an excellent result in the end. VB 109(11) - 98(3) SM. Hurricane league Greeners at home to Quesada Lancasters also had a brilliant result, five convincing wins and of course the long game. Shots, VB 122(12) - 89(2) Q. At the halfway stage the Fairways should be in first or second place in the league and the Greeners are in the top spot in their league. Well done Vistabella! let's continue the good work in the second half after the Spanish Nationals. Good luck to Martin Foulcer who will be defending his Singles title. Horadada Bowls Club – Presentation Night
La Siesta Bowls Club by Rod Edgerton In the VCL South Division La Siesta travelled to Montemar to play the Lords and it was a disappointing result for the away side losing by 120 shots to 88 with the highlight for the visitors being a win by the in-form Irene Mangan in the Ladies Singles winning her match by a convincing 21-10 scoreline. The Mens Singles was a close affair with La Siesta’s Patrick Reilly losing by 19 shots to 21.The La Siesta Triple of Pat Moore, John Taylor and Jean Cooper also had a close match being narrowly defeated by 13 shots to 12.So in the end the result saw just 2 points gained by La Siesta to their opponents 12. The Hornets travelled to El Rancho, always a tricky place to visit, and unfortunately lost the match by 146 shots to 63 picking up just the 2 points to the home sides 12. This will narrow the gap at the top of the table. Highlight for La Siesta was Penny Porter, Sid Gallup and John Clarke who won by 18 shots to 15.

The restaurant had no problem catering for the 77 members of the Bowls Club and their guests. After the meal and the presentations the music and singing provided by Andy Jones ensured that the dance floor was never empty. El Rancho Bowls Club
San Luis Bowls Club By Sheila Cammack
Monday found El Rancho being entertained Emerald Isle Earls in the first of this week's VCL fixtures and although both teams played well, El Rancho took the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots by a small margin. As always in bowls matches, the result is not always down to how you play, but also down to the draw and how your opponent plays on the day. Ladies singles: Carolyn Harris 3-21. Gents singles: Jim Gracie 21-15. Pairs: Ann Taylor and David Whitworth 19-8. Trips: Jan Bright, Jim Taylor and Richard Lee 2118. Rinks: Emma Walsh, Diane Yates, Jane Hamill and John Skipper 7-20. Rinks: June Whitworth, Barry Bright, Merv Armstrong and Stew Hamill 27-11. The second VCL match, on Wednesday, was played was played at Country Bowls against The Herons. Although the Herons took the rinks by 4 to 2, but the overall shots by just a single shot. Ladies singles: Jane Hamill 13-21. Gents singles: Richard Lee 21-10. Pairs: Jim Gracie and David Whitworth 14-18. Triples: Judy Foley, Brian Taylor and Malc Elmore 14-18. Rinks: June Whitworth, Sheila Cooper, Shirley Edwards and Carolyn Harris 26-9. Rinks: Bob Easthope, John Skipper, Merv Armstrong and Stew Hamill 7-20. On Friday the Buckskins played host to La siesta Hornets, always great company, giving us a splendid morning of bowls. As always the home team will have the advantage and the Hornets put in a great effort, although the score may indicate otherwise. Buckskins took a well deserved 5 rinks and the overall shots by a reasonable margin. Richard Needham, Jim Taylor and Jim Gracie 24-12. Jan Bright, Rob Clark and John Skipper 33-7. June Whitworth, Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 15-18. Pam Harris, Malc Sykes and David Whitworth 35-5. Trish Elsam, Mick Ager and Richard Lee 22-12. "ADIOS TERCERA HOLA PREFERENTE" F ollowing 12 consecutive, CD Torrevieja ................ 1 mainly successful, years of national CF Boriol ...................... 4 3rd division football, Torry will next season be plying their trade in the Alicante regional preferente division. The good news is that this will involve more local football, with the furthest trip likely to be Benidorm, as opposed to Castellon region, where last Saturday´s opponents Borriol hail from. It will also mean lower wages, and hopefully a chance for supporters to witness more exciting entertaining football, challenging for play off slots as opposed to a constant battle against relegation. It hurts me to say it, but the writing was on the wall way back in mid December, when Torry slipped to a 2-0 reversal over at Borriol. Since then, there was a period when a string of positive results appeared to arrest the threat of relegation, but a severe lack of goals put paid to any slim hopes of survival. There have been positives, and in Vicente they have a most gifted, dedicated and enthusiastic full back, who will no doubt be enjoying
his football at a higher level next season. He is not alone, for keeper Jose Carlos plus strikers Lewis and Pastor gave their all to the cause, but alas it wasn´t enough to save their team. This meaningless end of season fixture started promising for the hosts, but the 1st half could and should have been productive. Vicente supplied an assist to Damian, who turned on the edge of the box before executing a sweet drive into the far corner of the net, giving them an early lead. But before the break, they had missed 2 glorious opportunities to increase the lead, none more so than Borja who has been a huge disappointment since his arrival. He rounded the keeper, but somehow contrived to shoot wide of an open goal, which sort of sums up his prowess (or lack of it!) in front of goal. It took precisely 6 second half minutes for Borriol to equalize, courtesy of a 20 yard drive by Adrian. Comically, Torry´s eccentric keeper Buba had caught the effort, but a strong wind carried both him and the ball over the line. A cross from the right by Julien was hammered home by Badre on the hour mark, then 15 mins later Colomer converted a penalty following a foul by Jorge inside the box, to make it 1-3. Sub Lewis had an opportunity to reduce the arrears on 79 mins, but he failed to get a touch on an inviting cross with the goal at his mercy. A headed goal by Hector in stoppage time gave the visitors a
El Plantio 2 Golf Society - The Ray Baptiste Trophy. The competition consisted of a Medalford - players deduct their Stableford total scored on the back nine holes from the net Medal score from the front nine. Ideal course and weather conditions made for a keenly fought contest, with four people finishing with 9 shots. The unlucky person to finish in 4th position was Ray Housley, with 16 Stableford points on the back 9 holes. Nearest the pins : Hole 6, Mike Williams - Hole 9, Martin Rickman. 3rd Place - Martin Rickman, Handicap 10 - 9 shots (C/B 17). 2nd Place - Lawrence Wanty, Handicap 8 - 9 shots (C/B 18). 1st Place John O'Brien, Handicap 6 - 9 shots (C/B 19) If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. flattering score line, signalling tears to flow from certain Torry players who probably won´t be wearing the blue and white shirt next season. So, wholesale changes to the team who lost at Paterna last week failed to produce a last day victory, leaving manager Pedreno to mull over his and indeed the whole backroom staffs future. Torry line up: Buba, Vicente, Kana, Martin (Calzado 64), Jorge, Booker, Joel (Pastor 64), Nica, Borja, Damian (Lewis 64), Beltran.
2b or not 2b for Elche?
Goalkeeper Roberto denies Nino
Elche CF 0 -1 CD Mirandés By Kevin Rendall Elche slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat as their freefall down the Segunda División table continued in dismal fashion. A last minute goal when a useful point seemed certain was the story last week at Mallorca and it was a case of déjà vu yesterday at the Martínez Valero when lowly, and ten man, Mirandés came calling. Fifteen odd thousand were there on a bright, sunny afternoon which quickly became gloomy for Elche who, once again, looked anxious and low on confidence. An early goal would have settled the nerves and, in all likelihood, led to more, it wasn't to be, though, as both sides laboured to find any kind of rhythm. Chances for either side were few and far between as a nondescript first half progressed to a goal-less conclusion. What Elche could have done with was ripples of appreciative applause, instead they got the usual moans and groans and jeers and whistles from their fickle crowd. The only bright spot of a dull opening forty five was the dismissal of Urko Vera five minutes before the break for slashing at Rober Correa with his right elbow. Quite why he complained so much was a mystery. Elche set about the second half with renewed ener-
gy and only a little more composure prevented them taking the lead. Substitute Sory Kaba squandered two decent chances, the product of better build up play than hitherto. Elche continued to press and always looked the most likely of the two sides to score. A goal-less draw would have yielded a precious point, something Elche looked to have settled for last week, too. Then history repeated itself. Mirandés offered precious little offensively, save for flailing elbows - Provencio would also see red later for using his – until the dying seconds. It was his hopeful free-kick lumped in to the Elche penalty area that provided Carlos Moreno with the opportunity to win the match. Given too much space he deftly sent a flicked header beyond Juan Carlos to condemn Elche. Former Elche Ilicitano coach Vicente Parras already had a massive job to do to prevent Elche being relegated and his task became even more difficult following this sorry defeat. He now has a further four matches to prevent the unthinkable becoming a reality. Elsewhere this weekend results went against the Ilicitanos, the upshot of which being Elche start next week deep in the red zone with only, ironically as it happens, Mallorca and Mirandés beneath them.
