T O S AV E CONTINUES IN

wo important developments took place in the past week in the fight to save Cala Mosca, the last kilometre of virgin coast in Orihuela Costa from the building of 1,500 new houses. On 15 May, Bob Houliston of C.L.A.R.O., together with Marta Guillen, Councillor of the Orihuela political party Cambiemos and the regional assembly Deputy Antonio

T

Estañ met with the Valencia government Director General for the Environment. The purpose of the visit was to follow up the meeting of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee at the end of February which unanimously decided to request the Valencia regional government to carry out an independent Environmental Impact Study before taking a decision on the revised plan to build 1,500

CALA MOSCA VA L E N C I A

new houses on Cala Mosca. According to the law as it stands, the Developer is responsible for carrying out an environmental impact study before the approval of a building project. However, Members of the European Parliament’s

Petitions Committee objected that this involved an obvious conflict of interest in that the developer’s overriding concern would be to justify his project rather than prioritise environmental concerns. Continued on Page 2

Fight to save Cala Mosca Continued from Page 1 The visiting delegation argued that it would be within the competence of the Valencia government to commission an independent environmental impact study which could have a broader objective than the Developer’s study which had not given sufficient protection to two endangered species present on Cala Mosca, the impact of the building project on the environment in general or the social cost of adding potentially 5-6,000 more to the population of Orihuela Costa already suffering from inadequate services. The Director General for the Environment undertook to consider these arguments sympathetically when deciding on the reply to be given to the European Parliament. The second development in the fight to save Cala Mosca was the surprise decision of the Valencia Government to reverse its earlier decision to exclude Cala Mosca from its new coastal protection plan. Announcing a modification to its initial proposal, the Valencia government included the southern third of Cala Mosca in its coastal protection plan but as a transitional measure which would prevent construction if the Developer failed

to carry out a building project within a period of 5 years. While this is a welcome recognition of the importance of protecting Cala Mosca, it does not go far enough. It does not protect the northern two thirds of the area on which, although there is no house building, the infrastructure of streets, pavements and utilities has already been provided. The decision also carries the obvious danger that the Developer will accelerate his plans to build on the so far virgin southern part of Cala Mosca in order to avoid the prohibition which would be applied after the 5 year transitional period. However, something is better than nothing. The southern part of Cala Mosca is the most environmentally sensitive part where the endangered species are concentrated. Authority to build on this area would obviously be subject to very strict conditions. The fight to save this emblematic remaining kilometre of virgin coast continues. There is important support to prevent its massive urbanisation. It is a pity that the present Popular Party-Citizens party government of Orihuela has not lifted a finger to assist in this hugely important cause. CLARO PRESS RELEASE

A million euros to recover Guardamar Dunes

T

he General Directorate of Heritage announced last week an investment of 1.1 million euros for the recovery of Guardamar’s Dunes. The announcement was made by Carmen Amoraga, during the inauguration of the exhibition on the shipwreck of the Bou Ferrer in the coastal town’s Cultural Centre. The works will consist of the recovery and further excavation of the archaeological remains of the Rábita and Fonteta area, both of Phoenician origin. In addition, 300,000 euros of the budget will be used to establish a visitors centre. Amoraga pointed out that this is a commitment that was first confirmed at the beginning of the legislature but could not be carried out due to budgetary restrictions. Opening of the Bou Ferrer exhibition in Guardamar

However, the General Director of Patrimonio has assured everyone that the works will begin before the end of the year and is confident that the whole project will be concluded by 2019. The Bou Ferrer exhibition, meanwhile, will continue through to late July. You will be able to see exhibits from the shipwreck of this 30-metre 230ton cargo ship from the mid-1st Century, from Monday to Saturday 10.30 to 14.30 and 17.30 to 20.30. The shipwreck is of a freighter which belonged to the Emperor of Rome. It was discovered in 1999 by divers off the coast of Villajoyosa and is the largest Roman excavation of a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea. A visitors centre will be built at the Rábita and Fonteta sites

Cleaning up your Green Waste

The green waste can often sit by the roadside for many weeks

N

ot being an organisation to sit on their laurels, in recent weeks the FAOC (Federaciรณn de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa-Alicante), have been using their Facebook page to canvass opinion on the best methods for the collection and disposal of garden waste. Most people seem to accept that the current system, which was implemented shortly after the present council came to power a little over 2 years ago, is completely unsatisfactory with the region constantly left with garden waste rotting in the streets, often for a considerable period of time, rather than being cleared away. There seems to be little, if any, policing of the current system, very few sanctions against offenders and despite the publication of bulletins and posters, many local residents are still confused as to how the system of collection actually works. The FAOC say that, as it stands, the system is unworkable. Not only is there a scarcity of resources, in both people and collection trucks, provided by the City Council, there are also blatant abuses of the service by many of the users. As such the pressure group have now collated and discussed the information gathered through their survey, the results of which have been sent to the Councillor responsible,

Dรกmaso Aparicio. The suggested changes are summarised below: 1. Eco park or "clean spots" Establish an Eco park or, alternatively, several strategically located collection points in Orihuela Costa, in much the same way as those established by many other town councils in the local area, Pilar de la Horadada, San Pedro del Pinatar, Torrevieja, etc.

3. Emptying of Garden Waste Containers. Plan routes and collection dates, by zones, designing a calendar that adapts to the needs of the residents, according to seasons: in low season, 1 day per week; In mid-season, 2 days a week; and in high season, 3 days a week. Increase the maximum collection volume (currently 1 m3) and bag the garden waste in suitable bags.

Increase the number of Garden waste containers (for private use only) to cover the actual needs of the coast, by publishing a container map. Ensure that the containers are emptied on a regular basis.

Withdraw the need to provide notice except in exceptional circumstances where the user needs to exceed the maximum authorised volume or advance the established day of collection.

The costs of creating such a system will be more than offset by the savings in transportation and the benefits of its operation.

4. Police surveillance and sanctions

2. Gardening Professionals Pruning Companies

and

All green wasted produced by gardening professionals must be deposited in the Eco Park or at any of the "collection points" created above. They will no longer be entitled to use the garden waste containers that are established for the use of private individuals only, nor will they be allowed to deposit their waste along public roads.

Once the new procedure has been redefined and users are properly notified (through the press, farm managers, MSW containers, posters, water bills, etc.), the Local Police should be requested to monitor compliance of the rules, in order to identify and punish any infractions that may occur. So there you have it, the result of a survey carried out locally amongst residents of the Orihuela Costa. Do you agree with the recommendations above or do you have anything to add to them. Tripadvisor complaints encourage Fishermen help to regenerate use of portable ashtrays Mar Menor Eco System Fishermen in the Mar Menor are to share in a grant of 50,000 euro if they are prepared to remove rubbish that they find during their normal activities whilst fishing in the Mar menor and the Mediterranean sea. Most of the grant is being provided by the European Maritime Fishing Fund and in previous years was always paid to the Fishermen’s Guilds rather than the individual fishermen themselves.

Councillors for the Environment and for Beaches, Fanny Serrano and Javier Manzanares

F

ollowing posts on tripadvisor that some of the beaches are littered with cigarette ends Torrevieja Council is distributing 3,000 portable ashtrays to be used by those people who wish to smoke whilst enjoying their day by the sea. Councillor for the Environment, Fanny Serrano made the announcement at a press conference in the town hall last week where she showed examples of the ashtrays to the gathered press. Serrano said that she has received numerous complaints from both smokers and non-smokers. “The smokers are telling me that they will use the portable ashtrays at the beach while many nonsmokers argue that there are too many cigarette butts that are just buried in the sand.”

The councillor also emphasised that "at no time is this campaign intended to show that we encourage smoking, quite the contrary, as evidenced by the message we have placed in each of the ashtrays which says Do not smoke. But if you do, use this ashtray. " The Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares confirmed that this product will be distributed among the proprietors of the kiosks and chirunguitos, to be handed out to their customers, and also to be distributed on the beach when the summer season begins. Each unit has a capacity for up to 20 cigarette butts, can be introduced into the sand in a very simple way and carries a lid to secure the contents until it can be disposed of in a wastebasket.

This is a continuation of the project which first began in 1996 and is aimed at regenerating the local marine ecosystems. It is being supported by the Fisherman’s Guilds and by the town halls in Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar, Mazarron and Aguillas.

Consul to invest 1.7 million euro into Auditorium Events T he Society of Thematic Projects of the Generalitat (SPTCV), which is chaired by the former Elche Politician Antonio Rodes, has said that it is now determined to make far more use out of Torrevieja’s International Auditorium.

The organisation says that it is currently putting together a program of at least 50 activities aand which will all be hosted in the auditorium during the next two years. Rodes said that he intends this spectacular building to fulfil the main reason for which it was originally built and become the leading centre of cultural activity in the Vega Baja region. The auditorium, which was constructed at a cost of 54 million euros, opened in a fanfare of pageantry, with the promise that it would become the finest musical centre of excellence in the whole of Eastern Spain. Including a Teaching Conservatory which accommodates 240 students, soundproofed choral and orchestra rooms, a 400 m2 stage with the most modern stage equipment the bulding also houses a theatre that accommodates an audience of 1450 people Since it was first opened by Trinidad Miró, Valencia’s Regional Minister of Culture and Sports, along with the Torrevieja mayor Pedro Hernandez Mateo, who was subsequently jailed for corruption, it has seen little activity and, during the last 6 years, it has largely stood empty, despite the cost of it’s annual upkeep of 360,000 euros. However this latest investment promised by the SPTCV of 1.7 million euros intends to furnish a program of cultural activities over the next two years which will include two major events per month and attract audiences from all over the Vega Baja. The Generalitat says that it now hopes to recover part of it’s investment in the auditorium from the revenue generated at the box office Rodes said that he hoped there might also be some interest in leasing

the building in the future and despite a slow start there had already been and enquiry from the PP, which will use the building for an upcoming congress, as well as a number of cultural and other groups. It is also thought that the auditorium is being considered by the Royal British Legion as a venue for their Centenary Celebrations in four years’ time. The auditorium is being considered as a venue for the RBL Centenary celebrations in 2021

Welcome to by Jonathan Gilchrist Costa Blanca's Top Hypnotherapist With the ever increasing demand for the Fast Track Weight Control and Gastroband sessions I am delighted to introduce an optional extra for people who seriously want to lose weight but feel they also need guidance on nutrition and a good fitness regime. This is a completely NEW concept using Fast Track Hypnosis and also the expertise of the CELEBRITY PERSONAL TRAINERS at Beach Body Gym at my Cabo Roig Clinic. The idea of combining our skills when Ray, Pamela and I had a chat of how we could combine our expertise of helping people transform their lives for the better. This is how FITNOSYS came into fruition, we have devised a revolutionary system to make the weight control even more successful. How it works.. This is an optional extra to the already highly successful Fast Track Hypnosis system and it costs an additional €45 payable directly to the Beach Body Gym Cabo Roig . When the person comes along for the Fast Track Weight Control or the Gastroband session, after the session is over they will have an appointment with Ray or Pamela who will assess them and make available all the facilities that the gym has to offer for the month after their session with me. As Ray says “When you join Beach Body Gym in conjunction with Jonathan, I will have a chat about your goals and offer you a complimentary Body Composition reading and record your Weight, BMI, Body Fat %, Muscle %, Resting Metabolism, Visceral Fat and Body Age. I will then show you around the gymnasium and what services I can offer you ie: Fitness classes and a workout regime. Throughout your time at Beach Body Gym I will motivate you and keep you on the right track with your change of lifestyle.” During that month in addition to playing their reinforcement CD every day (which they are given by me after the fast track session) Ray will monitor their ongoing progress and give all the advice that is required for their continued weight loss, fitness and toning. Then at end of the month a further assessment is made by Ray and if the client requires a further boost from the Fast Track Hypnosis this is provided....

Staff from Quirónsalud Hospital will carry out free blood pressure checks on Friday May 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m., at The National Bowls Championship which is taking place at Quesada Bowls Club, a problem that affects four out of ten men and three out of ten women in the Valencian Community. Blood pressure is the force that the blood exerts against the walls of the arteries when it is pumped by the heart, in the case of suffering hypertension the blood vessels support a persistently high tension that ends up damaging them. There is no organic cause for this pathology. Dr. Clara Bonanad, cardiologist at Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia explains, "in most cases there is a genetic predisposition and external risk factors such as obesity, stress and excessive consumption of alcohol and salt. The remaining 5% may be caused by organic diseases or other hormonal disorders. " Checks are absolutely free and are available whether you bowl or not.

Diputación President visits the Vega Baja C ésar Sánchez, the President of the Diputación, was in Formentera, Los Montesinos and Benejúzar last week where he announced Government investments worth 1.7 million euros.

The President’s day began in Formentera del Segura where Sánchez, along with the mayor Francisco Cano, visited the rehabilitation and sports adaptation projects of the Juan Carlos I Primary and High School where he announced two Provincial grants, the first of 216,336 euros for the construction of new changing rooms while a further € 144,000 will supplement the cost of repairs to damages caused during the rainy season. The delegation then moved on to Los Montesinos to look at the improvements and expansion of the local sports complex. Accompanied by the mayor, José Manuel Butrón, the President toured the centre, which, with a Provincial investment of 259,200 euros, has built a new paddle court, skate and bike track. The project will also see the installation of solar panels around the municipal swimming pool and sports pavilion, the alteration of several buildings, and the construction of better accesses and pedestrian routes.

The town also received a subsidy of about 300,000 euros to redevelop las calles de Santos Médicos, Virgen del Remedio, Vistabella and adjacent urban areas, while it has received another of 149,472 euros to repair damage caused by the storm. Sanchez then met the mayor of Benejúzar, Antonio Bernabé , who he accompanied to the town’s public library and swimming pool. A provin-

cial contribution of 275,184 euros will see further refurbishments including a reading room, an office, a lounge-cafeteria, a kitchen and two toilets. Sánchez confirmed the "commitment" of the Provincial Government to the smaller municipalities so that "their residents have the same opportunities of employment, leisure, culture and sports” as those who live in larger towns and cities.

The President showing off his football skills at the Los Montesinos stadium The High Court of Justice (TSJ) has dismissed the appeal of Councillor Javier Pérez who wants to stop the move of the Cross of the Fallen (la Cruz de los Caídos), situated in de la plaza de España, directly outside the church de San Martín in Callosa de Segura. His lawyer argued that the monument did not imply any adoration of the Franco regime but was simply a strict private memory, and that the land on which it has been located for many years is the property of the Church. He also warned of the risk of its destruction if it moved. The Town Council argued that the Plaza de España is listed as a public space and does not belong to the church. It also denied that the cross would be damaged during any move saying that the intention was that it be transferred to either el Museo del Cáñamo y la Huerta or, if the permission of the diocese could be obtained, to the local cemetery. The cross would be moved by experts using the appropriate manpower and equipment. A decision to move the cross was taken last March following a report prepared by a municipal technician who said that the monument represents exaltation of the Civil War and the repression of the Franco dictatorship. The content is exclusively political and lacks any religious significance."

Balls and Bells provide a bit of fun A

dozen or more members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion were guests of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club last week where they enjoyed a morning of instruction with varying degrees of success. But to a man, and a woman, they all agreed it had been a very enjoyable experience, despite the occasional long trek, as just about everybody was required to chase after their bowls that had been despatched with the wrong bias at one time or another. The session had been arranged by Mel O’Dell who was joined by EI members Frank King, Ernie Bennett and Joe Dear in providing the tuition. Joe can also be seen presenting the bottle of wine to winners Tam and Margaret Campbell.

Two potential candidates - Brian Dent and Malcolm Cavendish

On the following night, after the regular monthly gathering, members were very well entertained by the Terri Horvath Morris Dancers who are based in Campoverde but dance at many local charitable events and Fiestas. They were at the branch where Sue Walters gave a short presentation on the history of the 15th century English Folk Dance before the team performed three regional dances from their repertoire. Of course the display didn’t end there as Sue then coerced a dozen or so branch members to take to the floor with varying degrees of accomplishment. Whilst the chairman and branch secretary took on this new skill with great success there were other members who were having obvious difficulties in learning the footwork. Despite his advancing years, Mo Davin, however, was so taken with the activity that he is now considering joining the troupe. Im sure that seeing him skipping across the floor with bells around his ankles would be reason enough to have them back at the RBL in the future. It was a thoroughly professional display by the dancers which was

very much enjoyed by all. On a more serious note the Terri Horvath Morris team are currently looking to recruit new members and are holding a series of workshops which anybody with an interest is welcome to attend, either to watch or to dance, with or without prior experience. This would also apply to any musicians who might have an interest in playing for the Morris team. The workshops are being held every Friday through June at Las Filipinas Social Centre from 1-3pm. At HELP´s monthly general meeting on Tuesday 16th May at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcazares the charity made a donation to the Spanish Red Cross of €10,000 as a thank you for all the great work that they do in the Murcia region especially after the terrible floods in the autumn of 2016. The cheque was presented by Ann Sheperson HELP´s Vice President to Jose Cortes Capmona the President of the Red Cross in the Murcia region. Also present were Angel Curnca the Vice President of the Red Cross in this area and Andres Cuevas the Vice President of the Youth Red Cross and Jose Garcia a member of the organisation. Joining them on the stage for the presentation was Ann Hetherington a long standing member of HELP Murcia Mar Menor who proposed the Spanish Red Cross as this year’s recipient of its annual cash donation to a charitable organisation within the Murcia region. Señor Cortes Carmona spoke to the meeting via HELP´s interpreter Audrey Haigh and explained that at the moment there

was no Red Cross office in Los Alcazares the closest one being in San Pedro del Pinatar and that this had caused problems in the past but they hoped to be opening a local office soon and that HELP´s donation would help fund the project. He also explained the need for the Red Cross which tries to fill the gap between what the Government provides and what poor need in the region at times of stress. He then gave Ann Sheperson a document with a list of things that the Red Cross hoped to buy or achieve with the money donated. ‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Going Electric

I

was interested to read a recent report stating that electric cars are finally becoming popular in Europe. This is despite their slow adoption in the UK where motorists have been reluctant to buy battery-electric vehicles. For many years, buyers of new cars have been encouraged by governments to purchase diesel vehicles, blissfully unaware of some of their environmental dangers. Many motorists became convinced that they were the ideal alternative to petrol models; it seems that they were wrong. At last, Europe's collective mind-set is beginning to change with sales of battery-powered cars growing by 38 per cent in the first quarter of 2017. 32,627 cars were registered in European Union countries, Norway and Switzerland, when compared to 23,703 in the first quarter of 2016. I get quite attached to cars. Over time, many have become like old friends; after all, the better ones have provided convenience, safety and reliability over many years. Personally, I see little need to change a car simply because of its age or to keep up with the neighbours. One of our cars is a Hyundai Getz, which was one of our first purchases when we moved to Spain's Costa Blanca 15 years ago. It has been a remarkable little car, requiring only the minimum basic attention, together with occasional re-spraying of parts of its bodywork as a result of sun damage. We tend to rather cherish it nowadays, as it became our home and reassurance during one traumatic week when we moved from the Costa Blanca to the Canary Islands. It safely transported us during

the three-day ferry crossing from Cadiz, with two dogs, essential personal belongings and the precious laptop computer with which we would launch the first edition of a new English language newspaper on the island. During those first few days on the island, our little car became a refuge from the outside world of chaos, confusion and builders.

By Bar rie Mahoney If any readers have more information about electric cars and charging points, do please let me know.

Fifteen years on, although having been around the clock at least once, our little Getz is still going strong. Living on an island, travelling huge distances is simply not possible. Since most of my work is completed at home, I don't have long distances to travel to work either. I guess if I am faced with a major expense, the time will come when I have to reluctantly say goodbye to the Getz, so what will my choice be? Petrol, diesel or electric? Personally, I am all in favour of an electric car. Despite a number of discussions and arguments that I have had with the 'petrol is best’ brigade, for me, an electric car will win hands down. It’s amazing how many motorists become very angry when discussing this issue, with many determined to rubbish electric vehicles at all costs, and often with arguments that bear very little relationship to facts. Yes, I know all about the very expensive and poor life of battery issues, restricted mileage and all the rest. The only one that slightly bothers me is the lack of sound when the vehicle is moving. I see this as a major safety issue, and I really would want a vehicle that made a noise when moving. I don't really mind what the sound is; maybe an Abba song is a possibility? A distinctive sound of some kind is essential to warn pedestrians that a car is likely to hit them unless they move out of the way. I guess that is an easy problem to fix. The Canary Islands, and the Spanish Costas, benefit from boundless energy from the sun, and in the Canary Islands, in particular, we have sufficient wind and wave energy to meet the needs of most consumption of electricity on the islands. The missing factor is a lack investment and insight into the potential of these renewable resources. Of course, as usual, the oil companies and politics get into the way of such common-sense developments, and most of us are left with no alternative, but to use a petrol, or even worse, a diesel vehicle.

Of course, there is another snag, and that is the issue of charging points. We are told that high speed charging points are popping up all over Europe and that a huge amount of money is being spent on building such networks. I spotted one charging point for the Mayor's electric vehicle outside the Town Hall of a municipality in Lanzarote recently. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come throughout the islands. In my excitement, I downloaded an app on my smartphone, which is designed to tell me of the whereabouts of all charging points on the islands, as well as the one closest to my home. Sadly, the nearest one is on the Island of Madeira, which would involve a lengthy ferry trip. I guess I’ll stick with the Getz for now. If any readers have more information about electric cars and charging points, do please let me know. he first week of this years’ Nationals is already over. After the opening ceremony play got underway with the Mixed Triples where some favoured teams didn’t make it through. However, the defending champions, Grace, Robert & Graham Cathcart (Teide - Tenerife) are still there and will meet the San Miguel trio of Brian Allen, Brian and Lin Miller in the quarter final. In the other 1/4’s Noel Davis, Gail & Fred Willshire (San Miguel) will play Jan and Brian Pocock & Suzi Cooper (San Luis), while Peta Rhodes, Peter Morgan and Fred Roberts (Quesada) will play Mel and Colin Highland and Colin Lindgren (Emerald Isle). In the last of the 1/4 finals, which will all take place at Quesada Bowls club on Tuesday afternoon, Debbie Colquhoun, Graham Marlow & Jenny Thompson (Indalo) will play Kevin McKenna, Deidre Leeming and Barry Armstrong (Quesada). It was then onto the Ladies pairs where last years losing finalists, Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield (Quesada) in the ladies event battled their way through to meet Val Collier and Ann Eagle (San Miguel) in the first of the semis with Gail Willshire and Lynn Greenland (San Miguel) contesting the second semi final against Gill Atkinson and Jan Dando (Indalo). In the Mens pairs Paul Parkes, one of last years champions playing with new partner Pat Heaney (Emerald Isle) will take on Chris Brazier and Graham Phillips (Quesada) in one semi while the father and son team of Gary and Johnny Raby (San Miguel) will play Drew Gerrard and Colin Highland (Emerald Isle). The ultimate contests of the first week’s play were the Premier events of the Ladies and Mens singles. Both had some real nailbiters in the early rounds which kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. The two finalists from the 2016 Ladies Singles are both out with the semis to be contested by Nina McKenzie (Mazarron) against Carol Graham Cathcart

Jan Dando

Broomfield (Quesada) and with an all Quesada semi of Peta Rhodes against Jacqui Johnston, Quesada are guaranteed at least one finalist. In the Mens event, last years champion Martin Foulcer (Vistabella) is still in with a good chance of retaining his title, something that has only been achieved in previous years by Keith Jones (twice) and Pete Bonsor. He will play Brian Robertson (Mazarron) in one semi final, while the other match will feature National Team Manager Graham Cathcart (Teide-Tenerife) against John Rimmer (Country Bowls). As the tournament now moves north from Greenlands to Quesada Bowls Club, and as we enter the latter stages of the competition, players can now see themselves within sight of a prestigious National title but with many twists and turns yet to come there is still plenty to play for in the 2017 Championships. So as play continues at Quesada, where the schedule for the latter stages will be released early this week, what we do know is the finals will be played on Saturday with the presentations toward the end of that afternoon. Before that, however, Nursing Staff from Quirónsalud Hospital will be on hand to carry out free blood pressure checks at Quesada Bowls Club on Friday May 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m., a problem that affects four out of ten men and three out of ten women in the Valencian Community. They will also remain for much of the afternoon where they will also be providing information on the prevention of injuries. Checks and advice are absolutely free and are available whether you bowl or not so why not take advantage and go along. Next week at this time it will all be over for yet another year. Wonder who will be celebrating. Drew Gerrard

After a small cock-up with the tee times by our Secretary 33 members and guests finally teed off in what must be said was quite a strong wind. It was thought that the scoring would be low in our Stableford competition; in fact the average score was well into the low 30’s. we did have a couple of birthdays to celebrate, visitor T. Sharpe and eccentric member Vernon Brown, who it must be said had a lot of luck on his birthday by holing his 3rd shot on hole 9 from a full 50 meters and of course for our Norwegian members it was their constitution day and one can only imagine the condition of some of our members after the evenings events. The course was, as always in good condition with the greens being a little faster than usual, causing one or two annoying three putts! San Miguel Golf Society at Hacienda de Riquelme.

SMGS’s final game before a large contingent make their way to Granada for an away weekend, saw 32 members and 4 guests turn up at the somewhat out-of-the-way course of Hacienda de Riquelme. The course was in a reasonable state, with fairways leaving room for doubt about whether the winter rules approach should have been continued, but greens were in excellent condition, if a little on the slow side. Scoring is never great from society members here, there is, however, always one stand out score, this time coming from Ivor Turkington, who was a “mere” 5 points ahead of the rest of the field with an impressive 39. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (27), 4th Ron Stenhouse (28), 3rd Grattan Forber (29), 2nd Mike Jordan (30), and 1st Norman McBride with 31 points. Silver Category: 5th Norman Cahill (28 on CB), 4th Ken Flaherty (31), 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (32), 2nd Phil de Lacy (33) and 1st, Brian Mulligan with 34 points. Gold Category: 5th John Aitchison (31 on CB), 4th Mike Freeman (32), 3rd Steve Higgins (34 on CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (34 on CB), and 1st, with a superb score of 39 points, Ivor Turkington. The Abacus was won by Alan MacDonald. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Eva Pettersson (5), Mike Freeman (7), Phil de Lacy (15) and Alan MacDonald (17). The Best Guest was John Humphreys with 29 points. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at Altoreal.

No one asks if there is a secret they just convince themselves that there is one and pursue it endlessly. Well I have some good news for you. There IS a secret to playing good golf the bad news is that there is MORE than one, many in fact. Do want to know something daft? Well these aren’t really secrets because you already know what they are because they could simply be called the ‘truths of the game’ according to a US expert called Dave Pelz. For those who do not know him he is the short game wizard and guru to the USA tour stars including the incredible Phil Mickelson. If these techniques work for him then you then this article should now start to get your attention. I will attempt to briefly explain the five secrets to a better short game as taught by Dave Pelz, namely: The secret of feedback. If you can't receive and analyse feedback from your shots and correlate them both consciously and subconsciously with your actions and learn from these experiences then you will not improve. Intelligent Practise - Never hit a few buckets of ball for the sake of it this is exercise not practise. It is essential that you work at a slower rate than normal, think about every shot, go through your pre-shot routine as if playing a shot on the course and ensure that you take your proper address position for every shot Alignment - Never practise any golf shot without adopting your cor-

Rubys Golf Society Mar Menor, a course we have played at only once before, about 3 years ago. We set off in the dark as we had an early tee time, the daylight came to reveal dark clouds and with it came a little rain, however this aborted and we went on to have an enjoyable game in reasonable temperatures. The condition of the course was a little disappointing considering the price we had to pay but never the less well laid out and challenging. The results were as follows, nearest the pin on the par 3's were Tony Alcock, Bill Martin and Marc Doherty, best front nine Bill Malcolm, best back Tony Harrison. Nearest the pin in 2 despite being measured a few times turned out to be a dead heat between George Marshall Deane and Tony Harrison. The Silver division winner was Chris Smith and Gold and overall winner was Tony Alcock. No two's were recorded today so the pot rolls over. We returned to Rayz bar on El Raso where a nice buffet of chicken pie was provided by our hosts, many thanks for that Chris and the staff. The football card draw was won by Bill Martin. Our next outing is the Ivie Davies memorial day when we are having a large raffle and auction in aid of Cancer Research, raffle tickets are available at Rayz bar if anyone wishes to support this worthy cause. The golf on this day is now fully booked but if anyone wants any information about forthcoming games or joining our society please email us at rubysgolf @yahoo.co.uk

rect address and alignment position because even a good swing will result in the ball going in the wrong direction and moreover your subconscious will actually try to hit the ball at the target and corrections will be made during your swing. You will never groove or learn a good swing on this basis so at all time during practice use a club on the ground (aimed parallel to the target line) to assist you with the alignment learning process. Trajectory - Never turn away after a golf shot just because it has gone in the wrong direction because you can still learn something from the shot in particular the trajectory. After each practise shot ask yourself was the shot on target? was it the correct distance? was the trajectory correct? if not why not? was the trajectory the same as the last shot? These thoughts will help you on the golf course and therefore it is important to check the height and character of each shot’s trajectory. The Finish - Before you play any shot your must visualise it in your minds eye so that you make the perfect motion. You can only achieve this from experience and seeing and feeling how different swings cause the ball to react in different ways. You can’t learn this from watching other people, reading books or watching videos. One method used to assist this process is to ‘hold your finish after each practise shot because it causes kinesthetic awareness. All you have to do is to complete the follow through position of the swing, without moving so that you have the feel of the swing as the ball lands. Holding the finish position will help the mind to correlate the swing and feel needed to play a certain short to obtain certain results. You should try these techniques for yourself but regardless you should always remember that bad practise is worse than no practise at all.

Carlos promises to reinforce CD Montesinos squad

By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos coach Carlos Perez and his assistant Angel Ivan will not be getting carried away following promotion to the 1st Regional division of the Valencia football league. "Next season will be one of settling in to the 1st Regional league," Carlos exclusively told me. Speaking at the Annual Player of the year awards the Los Montesinos based club manager said: "I am looking at finishing mid table in the 2017-18 season. Any higher will be a bonus." Former CF Torrevieja player Carlos, who replaced sacked Camacho in October, lead CD Montesinos to the Championship title of the 2nd Regional Group this season. "I will be looking to strengthen the squad with an additional four players during the summer," Carlos told me.

Carlos, who also played at Valencia CF reserve team Mestalla, said: "The 1st Regional league will be much more difficult to play in next season, there are many big clubs we will face." Looking ahead Carlos, who has committed himself to CD Montesinos, in the wake of rumours that he may be poached by interested clubs following his success, said: "I will be at CD Montesinos next season. I am looking forward to the challenge." Carlos, who went into management at Bigastro, Guardamar and Torrevieja after his playing career ended, said: "After the first season in the 1st Regional we can then look ahead and maybe push forward into another promotion thereafter. But it won't be easy." The photo above shows Coach Carlos Perez, Andrew Atkinson and assistant Angel Ivan at the CD Montesinos player of the year awards.

The Marie Finn Trophy - Blarneystone GS 32 of us travelled to Roda for the second playing of the Marie Finn Trophy. The course was in great condition and the weather great until the wind picked up on the back nine. Thank you, as always, to Gill and Georgia for the food. We welcomed Matt Finn and his daughters Suzanne and Fiona who had flown over from Ireland to support the event. There were several extra NTP prizes but with a maximum of two wins per player several of these

were given out as spot prizes meaning even those with lower scores went home with something. Las Ramblas Golf Society On Monday we played “Yellow Ball” with the winners John Drakesmith, Ann Marie, Alan Douglas and Mike Mahony coming in with a really good score of 117pts. The results were as follows: Cat 1:1st Bryan Neal 72pts, 2nd Liz Robertson 73pts, 3rd Tom Hardie 74pts. Cat 2: 1st Rod Doel 70pts, 2nd Terry Cullen, 3rd John Dobson 75Pts. 2´s Club Dave Pulling, Pete Dunn and John Drakesmith with 2.
