The National Police have arrested 130 people in Torrevieja, including three council officials, accused of promoting illegal immigration through a network of real estate agents, who provided false rental contracts to foreigners enabling them to register in the municipality in order to then bring in their families. The arrests included the 3 municipal officials as well as the owners of 16 estate agencies, 14 sales agents and almost a hundred foreign nationals. All of them have
been accused of crimes of documentary misrepresentation to enable illegal immigration. The operation began two years ago when the investigators first became aware of problem, at the time they were mostly of Moroccan origin and resident in Murcia. The agents identified several people who seemed to be in charge of the network, and found that they were issuing contracts which were then used to register foreign citizens at la Oficina de ExtranjerĂa in Alicante. It is understood that the applicants provided counterfeit contracts for housing rentals in the municipality of Torrevieja, which allowed them to then fraudulently register as a resident. The addresses were of empty houses that were either for sale at different real estate agencies in the area or they were occupied by other residents without any relationship to the offenders. The purchase of these counterfeit contracts was subject to the payment of 300 euros per month, to be paid by the applicant to the facilitator or seller, who in most cases were either employees of real estate agencies in Torrevieja, or their agents. The police were also able to show the involvement of council
staff from the Torrevieja Census Office, for having negligently issued documentation and certificates without the correct details of the properties, information that was subsequently validated by the Office of Urbanism, also in Torrevieja. This procedure then ensured favourable resolutions and the subsequent family reunification by the Foreigners Office in Alicante through legal channels, calculated by the police to amount to approximately 500 illegal immigrants. In a statement released on Saturday the Real Estate Association of Torrevieja, which represents 30 agencies in the
town, has expressed its "total disgust at the news" "News such as this seriously damages the image of the sector and the actions of the individuals involved are unanimously condemned", aaid the association lawyer, Juan Chapapría. Chapapría said that these arrests "sadden us all and make us more aware that corruption in the sector must be pursued to the end." He was unable to say what action the association intended to take against the 16 agencies, making up over half of the association’s membership, that are alleged to be involved.
Mother and daughters rescued as Lifeguard cover provides instant results
O
rihuela’s Councillor, Luisa Boné, announced on Friday the deployment of lifeguards and first aid cover for the regions beaches. At this stage, however, the service is only to be provided at weekends, with the full coverage kicking in at the start of the high summer season. She said that the lifeguards have been introduced because of the high number of bathers who are already using the beaches and they will also include the beach el puente del Pilar. Although only 3 beaches we covered on 3 and 4 June, all 11 of Orihuela’s beaches will be provided the service starting from next Saturday with an ambulance also placed at their disposal. The service will continue at weekends for an additional month even after the end of the summer season on 15 September. Timings for the lifeguards will be 11am to 7pm off season and 10am to 7pm during the peak holiday season. The councillor also said that the Department of Beaches of Orihuela will advise the public of the state of the sea, through facebook, on a daily basis. Meanwhile on Saturday afternoon, the very first day of their deployment, lifeguards were called into action on La Zenia beach (Cala Bosque) when

a mother and her two daughters found themselves in difficulty. Following the deployment of a Jet Ski the two girls were quickly pulled to safety after which the lifeguards were then able to carry the mother to the beach, where she was treated by medical staff for cardiorespiratory arrest. Fortunately all three individuals are said to have made a full recovery. Had the lifeguards not been in place, however, the consequences could have been very different. Perhaps the authorities might now consider the merits of extending lifeguard cover to all 7 days of the week.

‘Smart Palms’ for recharging laptops and mobiles T
he Department of Tourism in Valencia has said that it will install two experimental charging posts in Santa Pola and Torrevieja for portable electronic devices prior to the start of the summer holidays. They will be joined up and down the Costa Blanca by four other palms along the beachfronts in Peñíscola, Benicassim , Cullera and Gandía.
The technology is already widely used in the Middle East and the USA
A study into the feasibility of the project was carried out in 2015 as part of the coastal and beach qualification strategy. The study looked into beach equipment and beach services, both nationally and internationally, and as a result of this, a list of 56 action points was drawn up. They included accessible bathing areas and changing-rooms, many of which were installed last year. This year, however, one particular item selected from the list to be trialled will be solar panels for charging handheld devices. As such, it is now planned to install six charging point units along the coastline for portable handheld devices, each having a double function. They will each serve to allow the charging of mobile devices by means of solar energy, and they will also serve as a marketing tool for tourist destinations in the Comunidad Valenciana, by being located in places of special interest. As this year marks the 30th anniversary of the design and startup of the palm tree as a brand for the Valencian Community it is a similar design that has been chosen for the charging posts. These installations will enable a recharge of these portable devices allowing tourists to continue to make calls, thus providing yet another service to those that are already available at the beaches, thereby increasing the quality of service of our tourist destinations. The equipment is an independent
charging station for portable electronic devices with Usb type electrical outlets (smartphones, tablets, mp3 players, etc.). There will also be a bench so that the user who loads his device can rest while charging his portable device. The Regional Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, said that these new devices "will
allow us to provide a better service to the visitor, whilst putting the Community at the forefront of equipment on beaches." In addition, he said that "they are a reminder of our most iconic brand image, which has now been transformed into a point of energy, technology, innovation and sustainability, an image of the future."

What’s in a name? We are all aware of the problems that have been encountered over the years with the construction, management and opening of Corvera airport which, is still a long way from being operational. Well now it appears that we are about to encounter a further hurdle ....... with the pronunciation of the new airport’s name. The matter is to be discussed this coming week in the Murcia Regional Parliament where Ciudadanos member, Luis Francisco Fernández, has presented a motion suggesting that the airport be formally named “Aeropuerto Internacional de Murcia – Juan de la Cierva y Codorni?.” Now try to get your ‘laughing gear’ around that, particularly if you are a non-spanish speaker. The man himself, well it appears that Snr Juan de la Cierva y Codorni? was a Murcia born engineer who was responsible for designing the very first autogyro rotary wing aircraft in Madrid in 1920. Personally I still prefer Corvera!
A
s the summer approaches, and as visitors and tourists arrive in increasing numbers, the traffic on our local roads will soon begin to congest, with traffic slowing down, journeys taking much longer, and tailbacks, once again, becoming a regular feature, particularly on the N332. Cars will inevitably back up against each other. When approaching a tailback, certainly here in Spain, most sensible drivers quickly flick on their 4-way indicators in an effort to warn those behind, and usually the only inconvenience is a slightly longer journey. As the warm weather contributes to a rise in traffic we are also likely to see a corresponding increase in traffic accidents, the worst of which happen in beautiful sunny weather, when the roads are dry.
They are usually caused by distracted drivers who, instead of paying more attention to the roads and to the vehicles in front, let their minds wander as they enjoy the sunny conditions. Such was the case in front of the Orihuela Costa Ayuntamiento last Monday when a motorcycle crashed into the back of a stationery car. Fortunately he survived, but his injuries will see him confined to his bed for some time to come. Make sure that as the season gets underway you don’t suffer a similar fate, parti9cularly as you are increasingly likely to come across stationary vehicles during many of your future journeys. Bearing in mind that the tragic consequences of fatal accidents cannot be undone, the Police appeal to all road users to behave tolerantly, cautiously and responsibly - for their own safety and the safety of others!
Cox and Granja de Rocamora to merge Police
T
he Vega Baja villages of Cox and Granja de Rocamora have announced that they are to merge their Policia Local forces in 2018. The two municipalities say that the merger will allow them to improve the 24 hour coverage that
they provide to local residents. They will follow in the footsteps of Alcala de Xuquer and Carcer who carried out a similar unification some years ago, although for the last twelve years the two forces have joined together to cover fiestas and many sporting events. The two mayors, Miguel Ángel Gambín and Javier Mora, have said that the merger will take place on 1 January with the Police headquarters in Cox centralising and coordinating the service in both municipalities and guaranteeing the presence of at least two agents on duty at all times. The costs of the unified service will be shared by the two municipalities on a proportional basis according to their population.

Opposition demands urgent cleaning in Torrevieja The Popular Party said on Saturday that they have submitted a motion to the plenary in which they call for an "urgent plan of integral shock, because of the lamentable state of cleanliness in Torrevieja". They have requested similar action on several occasions within the last two years but without success. They say that the municipality is paying 13 million euros a year to a company which is still without a contract, to provide a service about which the town hall receives complaints on a daily basis. They say that the situation is unacceptable and must be remedied before the arrival of the summer tourists.

Campoamor sailing courses for children
Improvements to N-340 and N-332
The Councilor for Sports, Dámaso Aparicio, was joined by José Antonio Tomás, a member of the Board of Directors of the Club Nautico de Campoamor, on Friday at a press conference to announce the offer of sailing courses for schoolchildren ages between 11 and 12.
Following last year’s heavy storms the Ministry of Public Works is carrying out works to repair and improve drainage on several roads south of the province of Alicante. The works, which have been declared an emergency, have a budget of 508.873 euros. Work will be focussed on the following roads: N-340, kilometre 688, the access to Orihuela.
N-332, kilometre 38, between the roundabout of the provincial boundary of Murcia and the roundabout of Pilar de la Horadada Sur. N-332, kilometre 63, at the intersection of la avenida de los Europeos, in the town of La Mata. It is understood that work will be carried out mainly at night time, in order to minimize disruption to road users.
TORREVIEJA’S OUTDOOR MUNICIPAL POOL REOPENS Torrevieja’s outdoor municipal swimming pool has re-opened its doors for the summer season. Councillor of Sports, Víctor Ferrández, said that the opening had been brought forward so as to especially cater for sports clubs as, usually the pool doesn’t open until the end of June. The pools opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm and 4pm until 7.30pm and on Sunday’s 10am to 2pm. The cost of entry is 3 euros although there are discounts for children, pensioners and the disabled. Season tickets are also available. The pool will now remain open until 30 September.
The afternoon courses will take place during the month of June and will cost just 30 euros per child which will include transport to and from the Club Nautico Dehesa de Campoamor venue. The first will be held from Monday June 12 to 16 and the second from June 19 to 23rd. "This is the very first time that such an initiative has been held," said the councillor, “but we hope that it will be the first of many”.
These courses will teach the children the different nautical disciplines such as sailing and canoeing, as well as many other elements directly involved in sailing such as knots, health and safety, as well as the management in and the construction of small boats. Aparicio explained that enrolment must be carried out in Orihuela schools, as "the early indications are that there will be a great deal of demand for the courses”. José Antonio Tomás thanked the Council for "their help with the organisation of these courses which will allow the children to learn and to take an interest in this type of water sports”.

Councillor’s ‘No Show’ Begoña Cuartero, the councillor for urbanism, failed to turn up for a meeting last week with Carmen Diaz, the President of the association ‘Orihuela without barriers’ which fights for improvements to accessibility for the disabled in the region. The meeting was to answer questions put to her by the association as well as the PSOE and Cambiemos who say that she is not doing enough to improve the situation for those who suffer from problems with their mobility. Cuartero, however, denied the criticism saying that appropriate measures are being taken to improve accessibility and that all commercial premises seeking opening licenses are being required to provide disabled facilities.

Drinking water at last for Orihuela Hamlet
The Diputación de Alicante has finally completed work that, after many years, will finally supply drinking water to the Oriolana hamlet of Barbarroja. The water will now be routed through a network of pipes called the Tabilla Channels which flow from Albacete through Alicante and Murcia providing drinking water to over 900,000 people along the way. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the occasion the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, said that "Barbarroja has been waiting for this project to be
completed for many years. It was a promise that we made when the current government was first formed and with the help of the Diputación de Alicante and the neighboring municipality of Hondón de los Frailes we have finally been able to deliver on our pledge." Bascuñana was accompanied by the councillors of Infrastructure and Pedanias, Juan Ignacio LópezBas and Víctor Valverde, as well as the local town hall representative, Antonio Galiana, and representatives of Hidraqua who carried out the work. He said that the work has been fully funded by the Provincial Government with a total investment of 127,000 euros, as a result of which the district will have, after many years, a guaranteed supply of quality drinking water".

Civil Protection seeks new volunteers The Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, held a press conference last week at which he launched a campaign designed to attract volunteers for Civil Protection. He said that he wanted to "promote local interest among citizens who might consider becoming part of this important organisation that supports the security and emergency services by their attendance at approximately one hundred local events throughout the year.” The campaign got underway last Saturday at the Glorieta Gabriel Miró, where officers manned a
stand, from which they distributed information as well as demonstrating some of the equipment they carry, extinguishers for fighting fires, bilge pumps for use in floods, a field hospital and climbing equipment which they use, especially during the summer months, for bringing injured climbers down from surrounding hills and mountains. Emergency Coordinator Pepe Andúgar said that the next course gets underway in September, before which "we will provide information through a number of presentations in
Orihuela schools, since, to be a volunteer it is only necessary to be over 16 years old, although if you are a minor, you must also have parental authorization.” The councillor also spoke of "the great work carried out by all our volunteers during the last floods of December, where once again they demonstrated their professionalism in a situation of great risk". “Become a volunteer, Orihuela Needs you, "said Valverde. “It is a great organisation to belong to and one that will undoubtedly help you develop and mature as a person.”

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Sugar is so Taxing
I
was shocked to read this week that the most obese children in the world are in the United States of America, Mexico and the Canary Islands, which is seen as a micro culture representing the highest obesity levels in Europe. The Canary Islands are the first region in Spain to follow the recommendations of the World Health Organisation that a 20 per cent increase in the price of ‘guilty products’ will help to save lives by raising awareness. These statistics are frightening and I recall writing about this issue when we first moved to the Canary Islands. I could not understand why, in the village where we lived, there were so many grossly overweight people and, in particular, children. As well as enormously overweight adults, it was also clear that many adults were suffering from mobility and joint problems, leg ulcers, diabetes and many other ailments associated with obesity. There were at that time, and still are, many children who demonstrate acute obesity levels from a very young age. The Government of the Canary Islands have announced a new tax that is designed to save lives. The new sugar tax will be applied to food and drink that contain sugar, in an effort to persuade residents to reduce their consumption of sugary drinks and food. Of course, there are always pros and cons in arguments related to taxation, with one side claiming that the tax will assist in improving health outcomes, whilst the other side talk about taxing those who can least afford it.
In a wet and cold climate, I can understand why many children and teenagers will prefer to stay indoors to play computer games, but in the Canarian climate there can be no such excuses. There are plenty of outdoor activities easily and freely available to encourage children to participate in an outdoor and physically active life. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, football pitches and a well-equipped sports centre in the village, and as it is close to the sea, there are always beach activities available. Many Canarian families have the use of small fishing boats, which can also be a strenuous physical activity. Of course, in these days of political correctness, very few people face the real issues of being overweight, which is that we eat too much of the wrong kind of food and drink, or simply devour too much of everything. Instead, many ‘experts’ trot out platitudes that the issue may be due to “genetic reasons”, but I doubt that the early settlers of the islands and the ancestors of many local people, the Guanches, were as grossly overweight as current generations. Being “big boned” is another excuse that I often hear, as well as thyroid problems, which can be a problem for some older people, but is quite rare in children. It seems that excuses are always freely available when it comes to obesity, because many of us are simply addicted to sugar. On occasions when I am passing the local school at the end of the school day, I see parents waiting for their young offspring to appear from the classrooms. The first thing that most parents do after greeting their child, is to hand over a large bag of crisps, sweets or a giant bottle of cola. Teenagers in our local shop can be seen after school focussed upon buying super large bottles of fizzy drinks, chocolate, biscuits and cakes. In the supermarket, trolleys are laden with bottles of fizzy drinks, biscuits, cakes and sweets, but I rarely see equally generous helpings of fruit and vegetables being loaded into trolleys.

By Bar rie Mahoney The new sugar tax will be applied to persuade residents to reduce their consumption of sugary drinks and food.
Current statistics tell us that 1.5 million Canarian residents are overweight, which includes 760,000 who are classified as obese. This, in turn, contributes to the highest death rate from heart attack in all of Spain. The new sugar tax is being criticised by many, yet Canary Islands’ residents are leading the world for all the wrong dietary reasons. Education is also important here too, since many Canarian residents need help to encourage them to eat and drink more healthy options. Many local people simply do not know that processed foods include hidden added sugars, such as glucose or fructose, which are found in soups, yogurts and soft drinks. It is hoped that, given time, this new sugar tax will help to change attitudes and that these appalling statistics will be reduced. La Marina Report by Barry Latham Here we go then last month of the Summer Leagues. Everything to play for, the Pilots to win their league and in the VCL, La Marina not to get relegated. Best of luck to both. We did alright in the VCL getting six points off a very strong San Luis Falcons side remembering they won the league last year. Three wins each but the Falcons got the overall shots for the extra two points. Our winners were in the Ladies Singles with Janet Parsons winning 21-6, in the rinks Dave O’Sullivan, Garth Slater, Tom Spencer and Dave Hadaway had a 18-11 win and very excitingly Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith, Jean Perchard and Terry Perchard won on the very last end by three. Looking at the score sheet it could have been so easily 12-2 to the Pilots as two of our rinks only lost by one shot. Instead we beat Monte Mar Torre 8-6 away from home. So well done to all to keep us up towards the top. Jean Tregoing, Rob and Margaret Finlayson won21-16 with Garth Slater, Carol Smith and Dave Taylor getting two more points winning 21 -14. While Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith and Tom Spencer came up trumps with a 17-14 win. Usually at this time of the year folk are thinking about moving clubs or people are about to move out here for a better life in Spain. If you are one of those people why not come and join us at La Marina, friendly, happy club with a good social life out of bowls. Great for new bowlers as we provide coaching. If you are interested give our Captain Steve Hindle a call on 966 18 4360.

Carp R Us Fishing News This week was Round 3 of the Summer Series. This was fished on one of the side drains off the Segura near Mercadona, a new venue for us which we used due to Murcia Town Centre undergoing work. The water was quite fast flowing but far bank vegetation formed fishable eddies which Roy Dainty exploited to take 3.64 kg of carp and bass. Tom Marshall was second with 2.78 kg, Jack Burrell third with 1.88 kg and Roy Butress fourth with 1.46 Kg. A number of large fish were hooked and lost by several anglers. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Low Season Prices’ The world is a funny place at the moment with the UK voting for BREXIT,the USA voting in TRUMP and the French almost voting in a National Front Party so it would be no surprise to me if Labour get voted in this week to top everything that has already taken place. Is there just anything on which can all rely in these turbulant days? and the answer is YES in that our Spanish hosts will continue to apply a seasonal price strategy throughout the year and the good news is that as from 1st June until early to late September most local courses will be in low season when the prices are at their lowest point. As many people prefer the beach to the golf course in the Summer months the courses are generally in better condition and quieter so the speed of play is much quicker and all you have to do is remember to take with you sufficient water to counter the high temperatures and humidity. There will never be a better time to play some cheap golf in Spain. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you.
ERIN HILLS WISCONSIN. The 117th U.S. Open is back in the Midwest on 12th June. One of only six public courses to hold the US Open, and specifically designed for that purpose, Erin Hills is a wild prairie raked by 30 mph winds, with waving fescue grass, undulating fairways and roughly-cut bunkers. Golfers who have played it recently ($280 dollars plus caddie) say it’s a long walk. Seven tee boxes per hole allow the USGA a number of choices so the course can be played anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 yds. 115 miles from Chicago and the Great Lakes, the course can be on the chilly side, but the Irish contingent who qualify will find a cosy home-from-home at The Lodge, which resembles an old Irish Country Inn complete with Guinness-serving Irish pub. IN THE RECENT GOLF SIXES at St. Albans the shot clock used on the fourth hole got the thumbs up from players. 40 seconds were allowed for hitting shots in the first two group matches and 30 seconds for the remaining sessions. Andy Sullivan said afterwards: "Everyone was quicker because they knew the consequences. It shows that you really don't need 40 seconds, everyone can play that quickly when they know they’ll be penalised otherwise.” On the whole the inaugural Golf Sixes was voted a success, ending with Denmark beating Australia, with Scotland pipping Italy for third place. The next step being considered is floodlit golf in big city venues to attract the crowds. (Can you bear to wait?) RORY McILROY has signed a 10-year clubs/ball/staff bag deal with TaylorMade and a 10-year extension to a clothing deal with Nike worth squillions. Rory (28) had better win something soon although he may not be bothered; a good incentive to winning tournaments is to be hungry, and Rory isn’t even peckish. What with cracked ribs and his recent nuptuals his appearances this year have been slightly less frequent than those of the Male Passenger Pigeon, and that’s extinct. SWING COACH PETE COWEN says: “ Louis Oosthuizen was never tempted to change the awesome swing that won him the Open at St. Andrews in 2010. It's the same basic swing that impressed me

Hole-in-One 'swings' it at El Plantio 2 Golf Society By David Swann A lower than normal turnout of 10 members for the May Medal, due to people disliking the competition and some returning to the U.K. for the summer did not detract from the standard of play as I and the playing partner in our Threesome, Lyn Young, marvelled at the consistency of John Wilby, who fully justified his handicap of 3, as he completed the first nine holes in level 3's. The only blemish being a 4 on the difficult 7th, but made up with a 2 elsewhere. However, he showed signs of mortality on the last nine - actually scoring two 4's. This allowed your correspondent with an inspired 26 shots on the final 9 holes - including two 2's and a Hole-in-One on the sixth hole to pip John by two shots in the competition and also pick up a massive handicap cut of 1 shot for my troubles. Nearest the Pin, Hole 5 - Ian Henderson, Hole 8 - Keith Smith. 3rd Place, Handicap 10 - Keith Smith, 56 shots. 2nd Place, Handicap 3 John Wilby, 53 shots. 1st Place, Handicap 10 - David Swann, 51 shots. Picture from left to right - Ian Henderson, John Wilby, Keith Smith and acting captain Lawrence Wanty presenting the medal to David Swann. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230
A DUBLIN PUNTER obviously knew something about 21-year-old Si Woo Kim nobody else did when he placed a €200 bid on the 5001 South Korean to win the Players Championship. On the Sunday, he demonstrated the luck of the Irish and netted over €60,000! TAYLORMADE CEO David Abeles sent an emotional email to employees notifying them that Adidas has sold the company. “Today’s announcement marks the next step in our journey together, a stepping stone towards realising our mission and vision, and for all of us, an exciting new chapter.” (No mention of a raise so they probably couldn’t give a toss.) Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.
SUDUKO SOLUTION when he was an amateur. There's always a voice whispering to players they can be even better if they just change one thing. It can be disastrous, but thank goodness Louis never heard that voice. When I began working with Henrik Stenson he had a preset movement with his shoulders I didn't care for. I decided he should get rid of it and he followed my direction exactly, although it took him a very long time to work through it. As it turned out, it was worth it, but I decided I should think carefully in future before recommending changes.” Cowen may be right, Luke Donald’s radical swing change with coach Chuck Cook didn’t turn out too well. IN 2014 BERNHARD LANGER secured his second Senior Open Championship title at Royal Porthcawl. Wales’s first Senior Major Championship was voted a great success. More than 43,000 spectators lined the fairways in blazing sunshine to watch Langer produce one of the outstanding performances in the history of senior golf, finishing 13 shots clear of 2010 Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomery. On 27th July Langer will be hoping to repeat the performance and secure a third title. To hope that he will once again win it in blazing sunshine is pushing his luck.

ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY at Saurines De La Torre 25 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to the Saurines De La Torre GC for the annual Geoff Thompson Perpetual Trophy meeting on May 25th. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze to keep you on your toes. The course was in very good condition, the greens were not as true due to recent sanding and were a bit slow. Players were punished heavily for missing fairways and finding the hard pan areas due to the ball rolling up against the lip of the hard pan areas. It makes it a bit unfair because the next shot is unplayable and it’s very easy to lose plenty of shots as the hard pan areas are everywhere throughout the course. Winner – Pavla Serakova Our winner of the day was Pavla Serakova playing off a handicap of 11 with 42 stableford points Second went to Luke Branch with 40 stableford points. Best Guest went to Silla Ludviksdottir with 26 stableford points Nearest the pin in 3 on the 13th– Sponsored by ‘The Street Restaurant’ went to Pavla Serakova Nearest the pin on the 10th– sponsored by ‘The Auld Dubliner‘ wasn’t won so will carry over to Captain’s Day.
