Rain holds off for Poppy Launch

Last Friday 19 October was the launch of the RBL Spain District North Poppy Appeal in Benidorm and thankfully, despite forecasts of thunderstorms and strong winds, the rain held off. Indeed, following a little midmorning drizzle, the sun came out to welcome the hundreds of holidaymakers, veterans and

residents who packed the Levante promenade. The event was supported by members of the Royal British Legion from across the region as well as the Mayor of Benidorm, Tony Perez, and his Deputy, Ana Pellicer Perez. Snr Perez joined in the annual march along the seafront, but sadly had to leave midway through the event, to attend to

pressing business. He nevertheless left charge in the capable hands of Dna Perez. Also in attendance was the Chairman of the RBL in the District, Don Cubbon, with his Appeal coordinator Robin Hargreave, the assistant British Consul Liz Bell and Major Gary Allen RLC who is currently on detachment in a staff post in Valencia.

And making their umpteenth appearance at the ceremony, having travelled from the Royal Hospital to be there especially, were Chelsea In-Pensioners Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale who were escorted along the seafront by Father Don Witts, of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy. Continued From Page One Launch of Poppy Appeal in Spain One other young man who made an appearance was 27 year old veteran Jack Plant, formerly of 1 Lancs, who lost both his legs in an IED incident while he was serving on Op Herick 12 in Afghanistan in 2010. Jack joined in the ceremony, posing for photographs after the event with members of an appreciative public. Over two hundred members of RBL branches from across the region attended the parade which was led once again by the highly acclaimed Torrevieja Pipes and followed by veterans of all nationalities and services including former members of the RNA, RAAFA and RMA. It was yet another event that made the participants feel very proud to be British, stepping out along the front to the rousing sound of the pipes, something not too often seen in the popular resort, but a sight that was enthusiastically applauded by the many spectators that lined the route. District Chairman Don Cubbon thanked the city of Benidorm for the welcome that it always provides to the Royal British Legion. He spoke of the hard work that his members had carried out over the previous year in which the Poppy Appeal raised close to €170,000

He also emphasised that ALL of the money is used to help ex servicemen and their dependants in their time of need mentioning just a few of the measures on which it was spent last year including furniture, stair lifts and the purchase of mobility scooters for those finding it difficult to walk. The Deputy Mayor of Benidorm, Ana Pellicer Perez, welcomed all participants as she took the rostrum. She said how delighted she was to host the Launch of the Poppy Appeal, highlighting the many benefits it brings to Spain and to multicultural and multinational make-up of the city. She was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Don Cubbon, on behalf of the RBL in Spain. Mr Cubbon said that it was given in heartfelt thanks for the support and encouragement that the Ayuntamiento and the people of Benidorm provide to enable the launch of the Appeal. In reply the deputy mayor said that the Royal British Legion “is a role model” and that the organisation can always count on the support and encouragement of the Benidorm council. The ceremony ended with rapturous applause as the Standard Bears marched off with the Pipes and Drums before hordes of spectators, both English and Spanish, descended on Skippy, Wayne and Jack, to pose for photographs.

Guardia Civil still seeking witnesses following death in Cabo Roig

T

he Civil Guard is investigating the circumstances of the death of a pedestrian who was allegedly hit in the early hours of the morning by several vehicles on the N-332 road passing through Orihuela Costa. The incident took place at quarter past three in the morning at kilometre 48 of the N-332 just beyond the Skala club, in the direction of Mil Palmeras. Even 72 hour after the incident the circumstances are still confused, with the victim yet to be identified. It is thought that the victim was being accompanied by two other men at the time of his death and that he was hit by a number of different vehicles, but whether the death was as a result of a tragic accident or the setline of gangland scores is still a source of conjecture. One line of investigation is that the victim was an Irish citizen who was previously in a nearby pub which he left with two other people. The pub in question is not far from the location of the accident and according to the testimonies gathered by the Civil Guard the person could have been a man of Irish origin who was in a drunken state when he left the bar at 3am.

The Civil Guard is still trying to locate the two people who accompanied him in order that he can be identified and to determine quite how the fatality occurred. They are also waiting for an autopsy to be carried out along with and an examination of his fingerprints.

Risk of Mediterranean Tsunami A

team from the University of Kiel (Germany) has discovered that the southeast flank of Mount Etna, one of Europe’s highest active volcanoes, located on the Italian island of Sicily, is sliding into the Mediterranean Sea at the rate of a few centimetres every year, and that one of the possible consequences could be a catastrophic tsunami. The investigation, led by Morelia Urlaub from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, in Germany, showed for the first time the movement of the unstable southeastern flank of Etna, using a network of five underwater transponders. They were equipped with pressure sensors to continuously monitor the displacement of the seafloor around Etna’s submerged southern boundary, the results of which suggest that the volcano’s flank movement poses a greater hazard than previously The research vessel with Mt thought. Evidence mounts despite denial by Orihuela Mayor T he Orihuela PSOE spokeswoman, Carolina Grace, has requested the resignation of the mayor Emilio Bascuñana after new information came to light regarding his claims to have worked for the Conselleria de Sanidad in Alicante between 2007 and 2014. According to a report released by the Ministry of Health there is no evidence that the Orihuela mayor did any work during the period, although he received 55,000 euros per year. The report published by the digital newspaper Diario.es reveals the existence of three different reports that certify that during the 7 year period in question the PP alderman was without any form of a job. These are reports prepared by the territorial health directorate in Alicante, by the Department of Human Resources of Conselleria and by the Health Department of Orihuela. In each of them it is noted that "there is no record of the presence, or the employment, of Emilio Bascuñana.” Given this new information the opposition Socialist party has demanded that Bascuñana resign his position as Mayor "because you cannot continue to let time pass or make empty excuses." "I ask him again to resign because of the loyalty he should have to the people of Orihuela." Gracia pointed out that these three reports "only confirm what we already knew". The spokesman of Cambiemos Orihuela, Karlos Bernabé, also said that "these reports do not reveal anything new, but they only confirm that something smells rotten with regard to Emilio Bascuñana." Bernabé has said that "we know that he will not resign, that's why we call on the people of Orihuela, regardless of their political beliefs, to make their feelings known regarding the situation surrounding the mayor". The PP spokesman, Rafael Almagro, who has the responsibility of The mayor continues to protest his innocence

responding to this new information, has said that the "mayor is firm and is calm" stating that "it is completely wrong that this information is in possession of people other than the interested party ". In this regard the PP is "disgusted" to hear of these reports from the media before Emilio Bascuñana himself has had any information of them. Almagro does not give any credibility to the documents prepared by the three different government organisations "because I know perfectly the professional career of Emilio Bascuñana and I know that he is a man of dedication and honour and that he has worked wherever the work has been assigned". Meanwhile the spokeswoman of the parliamentary group Compromís in Les Corts, Mireia Mollà, has put her weight behind calls for the mayor’s resignation saying "The three reports confiming that Bascuñana received a salary from the department of health without working, don’t allow him to remain as the mayor of Orihuela." "After such strong evidence of the impropriety in Bascuñana's political career and of his flagrant lies in this murky affair he has no choice but to resign." "We are facing a fraudulent situation that Bascuñana has not been able to explain, " Mollà added, "and which politically disables him from continuing to hold any public office. Given the refusal to assume his responsibilities and resign the responsibility must now fall on the Popular Party, which has the obligation to dismiss the mayor of Orihuela from his position. As long as they do not act in this matter, both the president of the PP, Pablo Casado, and the leader of the party in the Valencian Community, Isabel Bonig will be accomplices in condoning the indecency that continues to soil the image of Orihuela. " On Wednesday the mayor broke his silence by publicly denouncing what he describes as “A media lynching that is being carried out against me," saying that he intends to take legal action so that the Ministry of Health will send him all the information on the matter, justify why it has violated data protection by releasing the information to the press, and to do what it has to do to clear up these false accusations. The mayor has also said that to date "I have had no official nor unofficial communication from the Department of Health about the opening of the investigation nor any document regarding the reports that have been issued and that concern me directly." He went on, however, to detail how in the three published reports the information released is contradictory,

Only last Monday, Simba, a domestic cat owned by a local family, became the latest victim.

SEPRONA investigate Campoamor cat poisoning Seprona de Orihuela, the environmental and animal welfare unit of the Guardia Civil, has opened an investigation to explain the alleged poisoning of a colony of cats in. Of its 30 cats, many of them sterilized by the association Colonias felinas Dehesa de Campoamor, there are very few left alive, with the organisation saying that they fear the worst for those still surviving. The initial bout of poisoning began on September 16, when someone placed "very strong poison that killed the cats in a few hours, but extremely painfully, according to the veterinarian who is leading the case and unfortunately, despite the publicity and the public outcry, the individual responsible for the crime still continues to put poison out with, only last Monday, Simba, a domestic cat owned by a local family, becoming his latest victim. The association Colonias felines Dehesa de Campoamor, with support of CES Torrevieja Project, are calling on the public to help identify the perpetrator so that they can be brought to justice. “ The facts have already been denounced and the case is being investigated and it is only right that the guilty are punished.” “On our part we also want to make the public aware of our outrage at the lack of answers to the complaints that this association has presented.” “We urge the municipality to take strong action of their own and to keep us advised of any progress they might make.” For more information you can contact Ana Hernández, President of the Colonias felinas Dehesa de Campoamor. Parents of Spanish hero receive George Medal I gnacio Echeverría, the Spaniard who was killed in the London bombings last June, has been posthumously awarded the George Medal, a decoration awarded by Queen Elizabeth II for acts of "great courage".

At the ceremony his father Joaquín Echeverría Alonso said it was a "special moment but also very emotional"

A list of 20 such civilian gallantry awards was published by the British Government last Thursday. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, said on Twitter how appreciative he was of the posthumous decoration to the Spanish citizen. Echeverría was decorated along with the Australian Kirsty Boden, who died trying to help the victims who were injured on the London bridge where the tragedy occurred. Echeverría, 39, "undoubtedly helped to avoid further losses by running towards terrorists, thereby allowing others to escape," the George Cross Committee noted in a note. The citation reads, "Ignacio Echeverría showed great courage when he challenged several armed terrorists, using his skateboard as a weapon, he was aware that he was no match for the attackers, but he ran towards them with the intention of preventing their continued armed attacks on innocent people ... He showed great courage, he could have taken cover, but he did not, he was unarmed and he had no training, the danger was obvious, but he made a choice to try to help those being attacked, exposing himself to danger”.

The Spaniard, who worked as an analyst at the HSBC bank, was described by international media as the "skateboard hero" for attacking a terrorist who tried to stab a woman. Unfortunately it cost him his life. The parents of Ignacio attended Buckingham Palace last week where they received the George Medal from Queen Elizabeth II on their son’s behalf. At the ceremony his father Joaquín Echeverría Alonso said it was a "special moment but very emotional" for him and his wife Miralles De Imperial Hornedo. He said the award helped "recognise the courage of my son".

Mental health and Driver safety

Venson Automotive Solutions is launching its new white paper, which looks at the connection between mental health and driver safety at work. Titled ‘It’s good to talk: caring about mental health’, the white paper looks at the causes and symptoms of stress, in relation to driving behaviour at work and dealing with productivity demands and increasing workloads.

Venson highlights that employees suffering from stress are 50% more likely to drive dangerously. This underlines the need for employers to consider stress and mental health as a key focus of driver safety policy. Mental health problems are the leading cause of absence from work in the UK, accounting for around 70 million lost work days and costing £35 billion. The pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture is one of the biggest contributors to stress among the general population. However, Venson’s white paper outlines that there are other key contributors to stress, such as financial wellbeing, relationships, moving house, bereavement or the risk of unemployment.

Driving is the most dangerous work activity ranking as more dangerous than working in the construction industry and being on a par with mining, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). RoSPA says that employers “should include” driving for work within the scope of their stress risk assessments and the Mental Health Foundation says that with van drivers experiencing an increased rate of poor mental health “we need to create a culture in which anyone experiencing problems can ask for help in the knowledge that they will be supported.” “Managing the driver, vehicle and journey are the main areas employers need to focus on, when it comes to the safety of their drivers, but all too often mental health is overlooked,” explains Simon Staton, Director of Client Management for Venson Automotive Solutions. Summer saw slowdown in convertible interest Even as Britons baked during the joint hottest summer on record, the lure of open-top motoring inspired fewer car-buyers than ever, say analysts at online motor retail specialist BuyaCar.co.uk. with manufacturers axing convertible models as demand dwindles.

“So when this year’s record-breaking extended hot spell appeared to provide the most obvious incentive to think about a convertible, we expected to see a proportionate increase in people searching for them.

Today, with fewer open top cars than ever sold from an ever-shrinking range of models, all the signs are that the UK market for convertibles is moving from mainstream to niche.

“What we saw instead was interest in every type of car growing except convertibles and estates.

Sales of new convertibles in the UK slumped 23% over the past four years, according to the statistics provided by automotive data analysis company, JATO. In 2017 just 4,311 open-top cars were registered. Over the same period the number of different convertible models offered by manufacturers reduced from 60 to 52. But the surest sign that convertibles are slipping out of mind for British motorists is the dwindling number of times people searched online for the details of convertibles for sale, even as temperatures soared this summer. BuyaCar.co.uk’s analysts now report that proportionally fewer car buyers even looked at convertibles during the record-breaking six week spell from the end of June to the middle of August, compared with the same period last year. They found that convertibles stubbornly lagged behind the general growth of sales for all other car types offered on its site - sharing the same fate as estate cars. Austin Collins, managing director of BuyaCar.co.uk, said: “Just a few years ago Britain’s love affair with the convertible was a perennial story on motoring pages, despite our unreliable summers.

“It certainly seems that they are on fewer motorists’ minds now, even when the weather for which they are designed is perfect. “So it seems the days of the more frivolous attitude to convertibles as a mainstream car option are over.”

Torrevieja hospital records 11 deliveries in a single day ecords were broken at the University Hospital of Torrevieja last week when eleven babies were born in a single day.

R

The goal is to ensure maximum relaxation for those in childbirth so that they can live every moment of the birth, enjoying a unique experience.

Of the eleven, 8 were boys and there were 3 girls and it is understood that all the children and the mothers doing extremely well.

The mothers have the option of being accompanied throughout the process. In addition, Torrevieja hospital is one of the few centres in Spain that allows fathers access to cesareans, so that, regardless of how the baby reaches the world, both parents can enjoy this unique moment in the life of their child.

The maternity ward in Torrevieja has recently implemented such initiatives as music therapy, aromatherapy, chromotherapy, spherodynamics as well as epidurals, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Mother-Child Unit has individual rooms for the mother and father, where, during admission,

they have personalised attention. A gynecologist and a pediatrician visit daily; and a nursing team specialised in puerperal and newborn care, are available to mothers 24 hours a day. The midwives do not finish their work following the birth, but they continue their relationship with the parents during the following days and until the hospital discharge. They support the mothers in everything they need, encouraging breastfeeding and, together with nursing, reinforcing the concepts of basic care for their newborn child.

Top 5 Money Tips when moving to Spain By Keith Littlewood, Regional Manager Costa Calida

Here, we look at some dos and don'ts for anyone planning a move to Spain: Do not Close UK Bank Accounts. You might have several accounts and the temptation is to start afresh in Spain and have everything located here. However, in the future you may need a UK bank account for a transaction or transfer. You may also go back to the UK for visits so having money in a UK account is sensible and will avoid currency transfer costs. Remember: If you try to open a UK account once you are living in Spain, you will find it almost impossible due to the Money Laundering and ID verification procedures. There is no rule that says you have to close UK accounts, so you can inform your bank of your new Spanish address and keep the account open. You should avoid withdrawing cash from UK accounts machines in Spain as this can be very expensive. If you have to do this, make sure you draw out without a conversion to Sterling being made by the Spanish bank as this is also very costly. Open Bank Accounts in Spain individually. Married couples will often want a joint account, as they do in the UK, for ease. In Spain what tends to happen is the male will be the main account holder. This makes it difficult to use the account for ID purposes for both parties. When a partner dies that account will be frozen and the survivor will not be able to draw anything out of the account until all the paperwork is completed for the deceased, which can take months and cause financial hardship and even leave bills and direct debits unpaid. This can lead utility companies such as water and electricity to stop providing their service.

in order financially, but this can be dangerous and have a serious impact. Taking advantage of things like ISA allowances or taking out other tax efficient investments in the UK might seem like a good idea – but when you are resident in Spain all these tax advantages can disappear as they are not recognised here. Capital gains, income, savings and inheritance ae all taxed differently to the UK and whilst there are double taxation agreements in place these will not stop you from having to pay additional tax that could be due. Also making a Will before you move might seem like a good idea but when you are in Spain it is better to have a local Will in place as well to avoid any Spanish pitfalls with inheritance. Take Financial Advice from an Adviser Based in Spain. This is the most important tip as many of the areas on this list can be covered off. You might think it is OK to keep your financial adviser based in the UK, which you can, but they will have very little knowledge, if any, of the systems and rules that apply here in Spain for inheritance or income tax. I was a Financial Adviser in the UK for 24 years and thought I knew everything. When I came to Spain seven years ago it was like starting all over again and almost like a completely different job with regards to products and rules in Spain. Not taking financial advice in Spain can be very costly so make sure you have, at the very least, a sitdown overview to make sure you are not making any financially catastrophic mistakes. In today’s financial climate it is essential you do everything you can to make sure your money is safe and secure, and what you want to transpire in the future has the best chance of happening.

Check your pension options before you move.

The local Blacktower office address is:

This is an area that, if advice is not taken, the impact could lead to you being tens of thousands worse off. If you built up pension funds whilst in the UK, either through an employer or set up individually, there will be certain tax advantages. One of which is you are allowed to withdraw 25% of the fund tax free. If you move to Spain and spend 183 days between January and December in one year here, the Spanish authorities will regard you as resident. Tax free cash from your pension is not recognised in Spain and is classed as earned income and there could be an unexpectedly large tax demand from the Hacienda dropping through your letterbox. Seeking professional advice about pension options will be of benefit to you.

T

he councillor of Protection and Animal Health, Jose Francisco Albaladejo, explained the rules of use of the six dog parks that are now operating in the municipality, in Torre de la Horadada, Mil Palmeras, Pinar de Campoverde and in the urban centre. Albaladejo also announced that two other parks are being built, one in district of Lo Alegre and the other in Cañada de Praes, so that there will be a total of eight canine parks in the municipality when these are completed. Regarding the rules of their use the councillor said that the entry of females on heat as well as animals with electric strangulation, barbed and choke collars is prohibited. The animals must be accompanied at all times by their owner, in addition to which they are being required to clean up any excrement and deposit it in the bins provided. Pets registered as potentially dangerous should be muzzled,

and if at any time any animal is aggressive it should leave the site. Puppies up to six months are also excluded from entry. The councillor reminded all users that they must make proper use of the parks and leave the spaces in good condition, "because it is not only the City Council's task to clean up the areas, but it is also a responsibility of the users". Albaladejo took the opportunity to report on the colonies of cats in the municipality, with regard to the CES program (capture, sterilization and release), which he said “has proved to be the best system to feed, care for and control the number of cats in the municipality.” He added that volunteers are essential to administer the program, to whom the Department of Protection and Animal Health and the City Council will support and provide with vests so that they can be identified".

The councillor said that the objective of this competition, which last year achieved a record participation, "is to promote photography as a cultural aspect that

shows customs, lifestyles, environment ... and where values ??are demonstrated through the image. "

The competition rules can be found on the fotomatonfestival.es website with the period of submitting photographs from October 12 to November 10. Guardamar to invest 300k in museum T

he Town Hall of Guardamar del Segura will shortly award the works for the restoration of the House Museum Engineer Mira which is dedicated to the work of Francisco Mira I Botella (1862-1944), to his work. Mira was responsible for the reforestation of the dunes that had threatened to bury the town of Guardamar, work to which he dedicated 28 years of his life toward the end of the 19th century. The announcement was made by the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Historical Heritage, Pilar Gay, who gave details of the upcoming tender for works that will see the building refurbished, improving accessibility and expanding the museographic collection. "We intend to further increase the appreciation of

Guardamar towards Engineer Mira and the great work he did in containing the progress of the sands with the reforestation worth that he carried out," said Pilar Gay. The municipality of Guardamar and Feder, with funds managed by the Generalitat, will contribute the 291,163 euros necessary to complete the work. The permanent exhibition of Engineer Mira will include a series of original tools that were used in the reforestation, the desk and the engineer's office, the camera used by Mira I Botella to document the work of the dunes, views of the people at the time as well as written documentation and plans. The main courtyard of the building will be remodelled with the addition of a new entrance where there will be workshops and personal notebooks.

Councillor Pilar Gay was announcing details of the tender

New uniforms thanks to Rawhiders

C

osta Blanca Rawhiders Motorcycle Club visited Torrevieja Alzheimer's Association (AFA) on 8th October to present funds to cover the cost of new staff uniforms.

AFA President Lydia also presented club team members Alan Ogden and Ed Purcell with a plaque of appreciation in respect of the clubs ongoing support. Costa Blanca Rawhiders are proud to be associated with this excellent organization, and to be able to assist these caring and wonderful people when and where we can.

The councillor said that the house of Engineer Mira is extremely unique since most of the contemporary buildings have disappeared due to the growth and urban restructuring of Guardamar during the second half of the twentieth century. "Its historical and ethnological value is incalculable as the architects of the dune repopulation resided in it, which today is one of the most attractive ecological, cultural and touristic areas of the Valencian coastal strip".

Free TV for Valencian Hospitals The Department of Health and Public Health is studying a project that will to provide a free television service in all hospitals in the Valencian Community from February 2019. TV currently costs approximately four euros a day for patients and is managed by external companies. The estimated cost of it’s introduction would be around 1.2 million euros per year for the 20 directly managed hospital, while the average saving for hospitalised patients would be 24 euros, the department said in a statement. The current contract for the installation and operation of the public telephony, internet and television service with providing companies ends next February. "With the termination of the contract, the provision of the service will in future be carried out free of

charge, so that the provision and maintenance of the service will be borne by the Ministry of Health, for which all necessary measures are currently being prepared", explained Ana Barceló, the Counsellor of Health of the Valencian Autonomous Government This measure is part of the plan to dignify and humanise the infrastructure, "demonstrating the importance that we place on the welfare of patients, said Barceló. "What we hope to achieve is not only to make the patient's stay more bearable but also to recognise the concern for their well-being.” Along with this measure, the Ministry is also working on an expansion of the wireless network so that it will be able to offer access to the Internet for patients and visitors.

Environment rejects Gypsum Mine T

he Department of the Environment in Valencia has issued a report rejecting the request by the company “Rio de Aguas SL” to carry out geological research for the establishment of a gypsum mine in San Miguel de Salinas. The decision is based on legal and environmental arguments and speaks of "irreparable and irreversible" impacts in a protected environment. The company had applied for permission to carry out a geological survey across and area of 1,450 hectares on the northwest face of the municipality with a research budget of 490,000 euros but opponents to the scheme had argued that the site chosen overlaps onto an area for the Special Protection of Birds (ZEPA) of the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor as well as a site of Community Importance (SCI). The report issue by the Valencian authority admits that the investigation and survey proposed by the Torralba Group, which would take place over three years, would not significantly affect the natural environment, but the subsequent exploitation, on which the request and the survey are focused, most certainly would. The area in question, predominantly in San Miguel, but partly in Orihuela, affects an area where there is an abundance of wild fauna, birds of prey, an agricultural and forestry habitat, and the proposed investigation would cause irreparable damage. The noise caused by the future exploitation, the transit of heavy vehicles and the destruction of the habitat, makes the project incompatible with the protection of the natural values ??required to ensure the continued existence of the protected natural area. The report is signed by the conservative director of the Natural Parks of the South of Alicante, José Martínez García and the head of the Natural Spaces Management Service, José Antonio Hernández. The Department of the Environment would certainly have been influenced by the demonstration held in San Miguel de Salinas last

weekend where more than 800 people marched against the proposal to establish a Gypsum Mine in the municipality. Organised by the Neighborhood Coordinator of San Miguel de Salinas, with the support of the San Miguel Arcángel Neighborhood Association, almost 15% of the population turned out to demand that the Valencian Generalitat turn down a request to grant research permits to the company on the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor. The protest, with the exception of the mayor who sent his apologies, was joined by all of the municipal councillors with the unusual sight of delegates from the PP, PSOE, IU and UPyD walking along hand in hand. The spokesman for the residents, Manolo Gómez, said that he was absolutely delighted with the outcome which, in addition to the tourism impact, would affect the value local property as well as having a devastating effect on the natural heritage. The Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, added that the company’s proposals were full of holes and that even the proposed survey would cause untold environmental damage in the Sierra Escalona natural park and in Dehesa de Campoamor which hosts up to thirteen different species of birds of prey. He said that it is the municipality's obligation to make sure that they are protected.

T

en years ago La Murada was campaigning heavily for its independence from Orihuela City. With a population of less than 2000, over 1500 residents signed a petition calling for its independence and segregation.

The 17th century Parochial Church of San Jose

Whilst independence wasn’t granted the village did get much more self-sufficiency with control over all its services including police, medical centre and chemists and utilities. Naturally this was provided by investment from Orihuela which was not so keen to relinquish the ‘ownership’ of the village.

Saturday, 27th October at 5:00 p.m.

ONLY THE BRAVE Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country.

For the moment the move seems to have calmed things down but there is still a voice in the village which won’t be appeased so look out for further demonstrations in the future.

Cast: Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges,

La Murada or to give it the name by which it was previously know, La Murada de Los Vicentes, is a pretty village or pueblo situated on the road towards Benferri. Take Junction 81 from the A-7/E-15 and follow the signs for the CV-870. The village is very much what one would expect from a typical Spanish village and the local people are wonderfully welcoming.

Dur: 2h 14min | Action/Drama/True story

Perhaps unusually for such a small village is the range of bars and restaurants which seem to be able to provide cuisine for any taste, some are very sophisticated and some are more what you would expect to see in a small village. Whilst the history of the village seems to have been somewhat more peaceful than many others in the area they no doubt had their problems as there are some remains to be seen. One interesting building is an attractive old house which is empty and many people have wanted to buy it but have not been successful. The reason for this, so folklore has it, is that the building was once a work house where the children of the village and surrounding areas were put to work from a very early age. As such the house has been left as a reminder that such a thing must never happen again. Standing guard or protector to La Murada is El Agudo, a mountain known as ‘The Sharp One’ maybe because the mountain resembles a shark with its sharp fin. Surrounding this is an area of natural beauty situated between the villages of Barbarroja and La Murada with fantastic rugged, mountainside dotted with ravines made from rivers since the beginning of time. The area is covered in pine forests and for the nature lover there is an abundance of wildlife and forest birds. For a day out take a picnic and follow the road from La Murada to Los Vives and then on foot follow the Colada del Camino del Agudo. Although to be on the safe side it might be preferable to visit the town hall in La Murada and join one

of the organised walks; stamina and flat shoes essential! However, as you walk upwards there is a plateau about half way with the most spectacular views, a perfect setting for the enthusiastic photographer. The village has always made use of the orange and lemon groves to support the economy and have since added olives to the list of locally grown produce. Of course as with so many areas on the Costa Blanca many landowners are selling to construction companies but you get the impression that in La Murada that will not happen too often. So far tourism has not made a mark as a contributory factor towards the economy as for the main part there is only the El Agudo to attract visitors. However, there is still much to see in La Murada including its seventeenth century church, the Parochial Church of San Jose and the Casa del Musica. If you are not planning to take a fairly energetic walk but just want to visit a Spanish village surrounded by beautiful countryside where you can have lunch in one of the many restaurants then this delightful village will not be a disappointment.

Weighing in with donation to AECC

Signposting at the entrance to the town

The Weigh-In Club of El Chaparral recently held their seventh annual event in aid of AECC Torrevieja and again raised a considerable sum for them in its ongoing fight against cancer and its help for those suffering from it. Based at Restaurante Casa Mia the ladies raised the sum of €1430 by again selling home-made cakes and holding a very profitable raffle. As in previous years, Casa Mia hosted the event but many other local businesses and supporters also provided help by donating gifts. On behalf of AECC, Hospital volunteer Ann Bissett collected the donation from Caroline Richardson, thanked all the ladies present for their generosity and hard work, but also reminded the ladies of the need for regular breast, cervical and skin cancer checks plus smear tests for themselves and prostate and skin cancer checks for the men in their lives.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Anyone for a Timple? “How about a timple?” I was asked by an earnest assistant in one of the traditional music shops in Las Palmas. I had just called in for a replacement violin string, and was looking at the range of Canarian traditional stringed instruments for sale. I quickly realised that I was not being offered an early morning alcoholic drink, and that the young salesman, speaking in English, had discovered an amusing way to catch the attention of Englishspeaking visitors to the shop. I have only recently begun to study early Canarian musical instruments, and as my first passion is the violin, this particular stringed instrument caught my eye, simply because of the beauty and simplicity of design. The timple creates a voice by the instrumentalist plucking its strings in much the same way as the guitar, but there the similarity ends. It is much smaller than the guitar and usually has five strings, although in Tenerife some timples only have four strings. The timple is mainly used to accompany Canarian folk music and has a loud and rather sharp voice. Due to the success and increasing popularity of this instrument, it has now reached the status of a solo instrument in some circles. The name of the instrument still intrigues me and I have yet to find a definitive answer to the origin of its name. In line with my initial

15

thought about an alcoholic drink, the timple did used to be called a tiple (with only one ‘p’); before that it was called a ‘camelito camelillo’ because the back of the instrument looks very much like the hump of a camel, although it is less than 40 centimetres in length.

There are many renowned timplistas, as timple players are referred to.

Timples were created in the Nineteenth Century and played throughout the Canary Islands and much of South America. In many ways, they are related to the ukulele, the Spanish guitar and the Portuguese chavaquino. Interestingly, the range of woods used is varied with the most common being pine for the body, ebony for the bridges, holy stick for the mast, and wood from the orange tree for decoration. Creation of these beautiful and interesting instruments was and still is a cottage industry across the islands, offering considerable variation in both design and construction. The island of Lanzarote became the centre for the systematic making of these instruments where one of the last timple makers is about to retire after more than sixty years of timple making. The Government of Lanzarote has recognised Antonio Lemes Herandez as artisan of the year for his involvement for more than half a century in the production of timples. Antonio, a craftsman from Teguise, has been building small timples since he was a child. As a child, he made them from cardboard and other materials before painting them. He eventually perfected his technique and transformed a range of wood into his instruments, mostly pine, which he favours for timples since it can tune well. Over the years, Antonio has developed his own unique house style, which continues to delight players across the islands and across the world. Sixty years after his first contact with the timple, Antonio’s hands continue to create his unique timples, although he now feels

that it is time to retire. There are many renowned timplistas, as timple players are referred to, playing classical music and jazz and it is often regarded as an alternative instrument of choice chosen by guitarists. During the next fiesta, if you are fortunate enough to hear Canarian instrumentalists, do watch out for and listen carefully to the timple. I am sure that, like me, you will find it to be an engaging and fascinating instrument. El Rancho Bowls Club Monday found two of our teams playing each other in the Voyager league, the Palominos being the home team, playing the Raiders. In the afternoon the Pintos were at Quesada playing the Rubies and had a good afternoons bowling, great company and a good result. Taking 3 rinks and drawing one, a fine end to an away fixture, a good start to the league.

In the afternoon The Broncos were at home to the Horadada Royals, also having a good win, taking 4 rinks to Royal’s 1 and the overall shots by a reasonable margin.Jan Bright, Peter Bagwell and Jean Bagwell 20-13. Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham This week is the start of the two league matches per week for us and Monday wasn’t a good day at the office for the first match of the Discovery Division. We were at home to San Miguel Dalmations and after a poor start we found it difficult to keep up to a better side on the day. However we did have one winning rink and that was: Irene Graham, Les Davies and Terry Hucknall. Well

La Marina Bowls Club Our rearranged Winter League game was set up for Sunday 14th at La Siesta. Despite the warning of rain we got away with it during the Match. Well done to all the team for a cracking 9 – 3 victory. Mike Stone, Carol Smith , Wendy Latham and Ann Stone got a very worthy 14 – 14 draw. All of them having some wonderful shots. We had three winning rinks Marilyn Fryatt, Richard Robinson, David Fryatt and Maureen Kidd winning 22 – 15.The others were even closer with Don Fowkes leading his rink of Pete Parsons, Jean Fowkes and Janet Parsons getting a victory of 17 – 13 and Shirley Hadaway plus Mike Smith, Desne Lowe and Barbara Forshaw winning 16 – 13. Don’t ask Shirley how Dave got on!!!! Typical Winter League went for a lovely meal afterwards. Got to the third course and the heavens opened. Puddings were taken wherever you could find a dry place. Who cared, we had won. The Pathfinders found their way to Monte Mar to play the Toreadors and came away with an 8 – 4 win. The overall shots were very close. We won by two shots. So well done John Morgan, Jean Perchard and Mike Lowe winning17 – 15 and very well done Terry Perchard, Marilyn Fryatt winning 23 – 10 and even better David Hadaway, Bernie Carr and Desna Lowe winning by one more 23 – 9. In the Discovery Div what a result for the Explorers playing at home they won on all rinks against Monte Mar Matadors. Skip Alex Whyte won 18 – 8 with the help of Mike Surch and Steve Douglas. Close by was Shirley Hadaway, Jim Reeves and Roger Stacey winning19 – 11. Don Fowkes handsomely won 27 – 7 with Carol Smith

and Maureen Kidd. Then came a good old family battle with the husband winning by one shot. Like Skip cliff Rawlinson, Mike Smith and Anne Stone pulling off a 33 – 8 win only to find Skip Mike Stone, Jean Fowkes and Margaret McLaughlin getting one more to have a 34 – 8 victory. I think they went home in the same car!!! Funny old game, here’s me praising our team on a great win and next thing I know another team goes and loses 12 – 0. The Winter League popped over to Vistabella only to find they, on this occasion, were out of their depth. Come Friday the forecasters, forecast rain, thunderstorms and what happened the Ospreys and the Merlins created their own storms when the Ospreys beat San Miguel Bulldogs 8 – 4 on points. Lovely to see Roy Hart back playing. Good result for Skip Mike Stone, Carol Smith and Steve Douglas who won 16 – 12. AlexWhyte , Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning fought well for a 18 – 13 scoreline while Don and Jean Fowkes plus Cliff Rawlinson had a comfortable win of 23 – 16. To finish a good week the Merlins, Old Man Perchard, his young wife and Trevor Hancock managed a 24 – 4 win. Talking of old, Dave O’Sullivan took his rink of Garth Slater and Paul Tregoing to a 37 – 11 win with them getting a hot shot on one of the ends. Brill. Don’t forget to claim your prize. John Rae skipped Dave McGaw and Reg Jackson to a 22 17 victory.. Good job they have someone quiet at the front. John Withers was looked after by Marilyn Fryatt and Desna Lowe who won 23 – 12. Good end to the week. Well done one and all.

La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton The Apollos travelled to Emerald Isle to play the Titans in the Enterprise Division and came away with 2 points to their opponents 10 losing the match by 109 shots to 67. The winning rink for the Apollos came from Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards to win a close rink by 16 shots to 15. In the Voyager Division the La Siesta Pioneers met the Sputniks in an all La Siesta tie. A close match saw the Sputniks win on 3 of the 5 rinks but lost the overall shots by 103-85.For the Apollos biggest winners were Val and Tony Dalton with Barbara Cooper winners by 28 shots to 15 whilst wins for the Sputniks came from Kathleen Morrisoe,Ken Stringfellow and John Clarke 26-23 whilst Dot Kocsis,Sheila Millward and Norman Murphy won 18-16.In a close match Hilary Clarke,Noel Morrisoe and Alan Ralph won 1615.The overall match result was a 6-6 draw with shots advantage going to the Apollos by 103 shots to 85. Two matches were played in the Winter League the first being a rearranged fixture at home to La Marina which the visitors won by 2 shots 77 to 79.Bill Jordan,Norman Murphy,Fay Beattie and Sue Jordan winning 22 shots to 10 whilst Derek Smith,Tony Campbell,Pat Harman and Jean Cooper drew 14-14.The overall result 3 points to La Siesta 9 to La Marina. A comprehensive win for San Luis against La Siesta in the other match in the Winter League

played Guys. The final score was 75 shots for and 95 against, giving us 2 points to San Miguels’s 10. Friday, in the Southern League, wasn’t a great deal better. We were playing away to El Rancho. This is not one of our favourite playing venues, it is difficult to adjust to the speed of the green. In saying that, some of the rinks had very close scores and it could have gone either way. One rink we only lost by 1 shot and another by 2 shots. Our 1 winning rink was: Irene Graham, Alan Miller and Brian

winning on all rinks by 123 shots to 58. In the Southern League C Division the Silvers entertained Country Bowl Cubs and although making a promising start on most rinks it was the Cubs who came on strong in the final 9 ends and won on 4 of the 5 rinks taking the match by 102 shots to 68 taking 10 points to the Silver’s 2.The winning rink for the Silvers went down to the final end with the scores level and with both skips swapping holding shots it was the rink of Ann and Rod Edgerton with Katherleen Morrisoe who finally gained victory by a single shot 17-16. In the B Division the Golds were at home to MonteMar Toreadors and won by 92 shots to 86 gaining 9 points to there opponents 3.Biggest winners were Irene & Dave Laverick with skip Vic Mahomet who won 26 shots to 14.Narrow wins for Derek Smith,Val Dalton & Rab Logan and for Ann McEvoy, Norman Adcroft and Fay Beattie whilst Pat Moore with Bill& Sue Jordan managed a creditable draw. In the A Division a good away win for the Blues at Vistabella by the narrow margin of 93 shots to 91.Achieving a win by 8 points to 4.Winners for the Blues were Ramsay Sinclair with Pat Harman and Alex Morrice by 23 shots to 16 whilst Joy & Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper won 18-16. There was also to drawn rinks from Trish Reilly,Brian Harman & George Richardson and from Dave Davies.Pat Reilly & Irene Mangan.

Eatough. This was actually a very good match for us although the final scores don’t show that. Total shots for 71 to 87 against and the overall points were 2 for Horadada and 10 for El Rancho. The match was played in a very friendly, sporting manner. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information.

Country Bowls Club Country Bowls ‘Cubs’ headed out to La Siesta for their second game of the season and for many of the team their first away league game. After a shaky start on all but one rink the newly formed ‘Cubs’ started their comeback. Winning 10 – 2 against the ‘Silvers’ with 4 rinks winning in a nail biting finish and the one loss that went to the last end. A very proud moment for the club and the team captain after a hugely successful summer programme introducing new players to the

Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Great Expectations Golfers in this part of Spain fall into two categores, namely resident golfers or tourist golfers. The resident golfer is typically of retirement age paying for their golf on a limited pension income subject to variances in exchange rates. The tourist golfer has probably been saving up their pennies to come on a much awaited golf holiday with pals, eating a greasy fry up each morning and getting sozzled at night. They do however have one thing in common, they expect the golf courses that they play to be in good condition. Feedback from my recent customers indicates that this may not be the case as the number of complaints about course conditions is increasing. There appear to be two main reasons for this, namely heavy rains after a long hot summer and hollow tining plus the over playing of all local courses. All local courses are bursting at the seams and while people want to play, the courses will take their money and fill the courses which get no time for respite and re-cuperation BUT there must be a balance because poor quality courses will result in the non return of golfers to the area. The issue of heavy rains immediately after hollow tining and a long hot summer is something I have sympathy with the courses because the combination of these elements have made the putting surfaces SOFT on top and these are being CUT- UP by spikes. However the players also have some reponsibility here because the number of scuffed greens,un-repaired pitch marks and unraked bunkers is also on the increase and this issue rests firmly with the players so how someone can complain about the condition of the courses and not conduct themselves the basic elements of course maintenance such as this is beyond me. We all want courses in good condition but the golf clubs themselves must give the courses time to recover and filling them dawn till dusk is not helping a difficult situation and players themselves must treat the courses with respect and basically leave the course in the condition they would expect to find it in the first place. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The Plaza Golf Society @ Hacienda Riquelme Despite the terrible weather forecast 39 golfers set off for Hacienda Riquelme for this weeks challenge and although cloudy at the start the day turned out to be perfect for golf. The course was in excellent condition but the tricky greens proved too much for most ! One player in particular had a bad round, Billy Wilson normally in the winning prizes scored a measly 15 points off his 9 handicap.

Gold scores were slightly better with Theo Boelhouwer coming third with 32 points off his 12 hdcp, our only Lady player on the day Deb Rose came in 2nd with 33 points also off 12 hdcp, and the overall winner of the Members section was Chris Baker with 35 points off his hdcp of 15. Lo Crispin Golf Society - Vistabella By Steve Hrrington A healthy turnout of 36 members teed it up at Vistabella, to take part in an individual stableford competition. It turned out to be a glorious day for golf, with very little wind, after a chilly start. The new 7 holes are 'bedding in' well, as it were and have, in the opinion of many have resulted in the course being a good one. Carp-R-Us Angling Club

Results for w/c 15.10.18

Carp-R-Us fished round 6 of their Autumn Series on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura near Guardamar. This stretch needs a lot of work during the year, so a big thank you to Ann, Jackie, Steve C, Roy D, Tom and Steve F for turning out the previous Monday to cut back the reeds and generally improve the pegs for today. The expected rain fortunately didn’t arrive, so the match was fished in excellent conditions. First from peg 10 was Tom Marshall with 7.25 kg caught using feeder and corn and second was Steve Collins (peg 12) with 6.00 kg on pole and maggot. These two were well clear of Terry Screen (peg 8), 3.15 kg on pole and bread and Roy Dainty and Steve Fell with 0.70 kg from pegs 7 and 8. All the anglers were troubled by blue crabs and if you fish this stretch and catch one be careful, the can give a nasty nip. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.comor on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

Monday’s ‘counter game’ saw some welcome new names to the leader board with none other than Liverpool football legend, Gary Gillespie, together with his wife Dianne, Nick Campbell and Reg Akehurst taking top place with 99 points. Gary (who plays golf off a four handicap) was the back bone of the hugely successful Liverpool team from 1984 to 1991 and also won 13 caps for Scotland during this time. Wednesday’s Stableford saw a great turnout together with some very good scores. Heinz Lei with 34 points only made it into sixth place! Our winner with 39 points was Lindsay Forbes who just held off Joyce McClusky who managed 38. In third, with 37, was Nigel Price followed by Pete Dunn with 36. In 5th spot, with 35 points, was Ken Robertson. Four ‘2’s today, one of which I’m pleased to say went to me! Also sharing the pot were Lindsay Forbes, John Dobson and Pete Dunn.

Ozone Tuesday Trios 16 October - Week 4

Our week finished with a closely fought ‘Change Partners’. Taking 1st place were Bryan Neal, Dave Pulling, Rod Doel and Maria Oldenziel with a very commendable 86 points. Por ultimo, (and finally, for those not fluent) in the words of Geoff Biggerstaff, ‘this ball retriever is not long enough to get my putter out of the tree’! Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell
