The body was found still strapped into his seat, inside the aircraft cockpit of the C101 that was still largely intact. The announcement was made by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, during a visit to the Mine Disposal centre in Hoyo de

that the plane is still in one piece. Following the lack of success on Thursday afternoon and evening the search for the aircraft wreckage re commenced early on Friday morning. Continued on Page 2

FROM PAGE ONE Eagle Patrol Air Crash at La Manga The site of the crash was 300 metres off the coast of La Manga at kilometre 6.5, in front of the Galúa hotel. The search party included an SAR 48 helicopter, the navy Corvette Infanta Elena, the minesweeper Tajo and the search and rescue ship The Neptune. In addition, the team was joined by the Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard and Red Cross with support from Maritime Rescue. This was the same team that conducted the search following the crash of the training plane in September last year close to the San Javier airport. This is the third aircraft from the General Air Academy that has crashed into the Mediterranean close to La Manga peninsula in recent months. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still unknown although the AGA announced that it had occurred during the Eagle Patrol's scheduled rehearsals for the training of its pilots. Commander Garvalena was with Wing 14 of the Albacete air base from 2007 to 2017, where he piloted the Eurofighter, before moving to the AGA on June 1, 2017. This year he was about to face his second season as 'Eagle 5' of the Eagle Patrol Display Team. He was an experienced pilot with more than 2300 flight hours and leaves behind a wife and three daughters. The Minister of Defence was asked what measures she intends to take in relation to the C-101 aircraft after the three accidents and four deaths that have occurred in the last six months. She said that "it is not good to rush into early decisions or conclusions" and that now is the time to provide "support and solidarity" to the family. Pilar council fine d 2.7 million euro for cancellation of "La Paloma"
During the current financial year the City Council of Pilar de la Horadada will have to find 2.7 million euros in compensation for the cancellation of the cultural centre of La Paloma. The Supreme Court has denied an appeal filed by the Town Council and confirmed the original finding that requires the Council to compensate the company Urdemasa-Intersa with 2.7 million euros for its lost profits after being unable develop the underground parking lot when the cultural centre project was paralysed because of rising costs almost 10 years ago. The ruling is a serious blow to the municipal budget which must
now revise the entire draft budget for 2020 to pay the judgment. To date the municipality has spent 3.6 million euros on the cultural centre and parking of La Paloma since 2001, including the demolition of the figure of the dove on the rooftop when it became unsafe because of its abandonment and subsequent deterioration. Construction first began on the new cultural centre in 2001 with a budget of just 2.1 million euro, but it was never completed and over the years proved to be little more than a monument to the greed and over spending of town halls across Spain at the beginning of the century. In addition to last weeks judgement there is a further appeal pending because of the stoppage of the works of the cultural centre where the constructor is claiming another 2.5 million euros so the semi abandoned building could end up costing the town hall 8.8 million euros and it is still no closer to completion than it was all those many years ago. Mayor José María Pérez (PP) expressed his concern about the judgement saying that it now endangers projects such as the multipurpose centres of La Torre and El Pinar which are unlikely to go ahead. He says that "he is worried that he will not be able to carry out important and necessary projects in the municipality “such as repairs to the infrastructure damaged by the DANA and the storms, the multi-purpose centres in Pinar de Campoverde and Torre de la Horadada, or the new auditorium and cultural centre”. One option currently being considered is an increase in taxes although this is an possibility that the mayor does not mention in his statements. The sentence "ruins all our plans” he concluded.

ATM ripped out of ground in La Regia The Guardia Civil are investigating a robbery after an ATM cash machine was ripped from the ground during the early hours of Sunday morning in La Regia urbanisation, close to the Leroy Merlin Builders Merchants. Local residents reported hearing loud noises at about 12.40 am but simply assumed the ‘bin men’ were being unusually noisy. But as he peered through his window one man said he saw a white pickup truck continually ramming the machine before the driver fixed chains to its base and ripped it from its mountings. The robber was joined by a second man who screeched up to the scene in a white four door Audi Saloon.
There was a loud explosion followed by screeching of tyres and loud engine revving as the ATM was dislodged. The whole operation took about ten minutes to complete before the two men raced away in their respective vehicles. It is not known how much was taken from the machine.

Investigations are ongoing. Cockfighting within the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida areas has raised its head in recent years. Although cockfighting is legal in Andalucia and the Canary Islands, it is prohibited in Murcia and Alicante, amongst other provinces. In Los Montesinos, birds worth 35,000€ were confiscated in a raid on an illegal cockfighting ring in February 2016. The bust was made by the Guardia Civil, following months of surveillance. Various charges were made, with fighting cocks, 5,500€, and spurs, knives and daggers reportedly confiscated. A court case was reportedly filed in the courts of Torrevieja.
Aguamarina Park to reopen in two weeks Work began to the refurbish Aguamarina Children’s Park at the beginning of December with an unlikely completion date published of the20th of that month. It was rather ambitious to say the least and of course, as local residents are aware, the contractor was way off the mark. However work did progress and, for the most part, it was completed by the end of January.
In January 2019, almost 200 arrests were made and a reported 300,000€ confiscated, along with 100 cockerels taken into police custody in Sangonera la Verde, near Murcia.
A Pritty Fantastic Life Octogenarian David Pritty, who has a property in La Zenia, whose career began as a Boy Soldier in 1955 and became a Sgt Major, has had his biography published.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and Eastern Airways’ MD Tony Burg
According to sources the park should reopen in two weeks Unfortunately since that time there has been no further progress. Many of the improvements and additions have been completed but as parents and children look longingly on almost a daily basis the park is still currently fenced off and out of use. Such was the frustration at not being able to use the park that barriers were removed by members of the public and children were able to gain entry and enjoy much of the new equipment. However that was put to an end late last week with the arrival of the Policia Local who promptly wrapped their police tape across much of the apparatus and restored the broken barriers.
“I would like to thank Eastern Airways, a longstanding partner of the airport, who have shown time and time again they share our ambitions to make it a success. In the past year, we’ve announced flights that are brilliant for businesses, as well as popular locations for holidaymakers, and we’re continuing to add to these routes.

Guardia Civil raids in illegal cockfighting By Andrew Atkinson AN illegal cockfighting ring has been busted in Spain and a 33 year old male arrested, for being in possession of counterfeit money, in a Guardia Civil swoop.
Granted a Scholarship at Kings College in Cambridge, due to his singing talents with the School Choir, he joined the Grenadier Guards in 1955, aged 16, going on to become a Sgt Major after which he was presented to HM The Queen at a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
But I’m told that the park could be open in two weeks with the contractors currently awaiting delivery of 2 table tennis tables. Once they are in place in the central circular area of the park the facility will be handed over to the council.
NEW flights between Teesside and Alicante will be taking off this summer. The new flights to Alicante, which start on July 17, will be running twice a week from Teesside airport. The route was announced by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and Eastern Airways’ Managing Director Tony Burg. Mr Houchen said: "Ever since we brought our airport back into public ownership and saved it from closure, one question I’ve been asked again and again is, ‘When can we fly to Alicante?’ “I told people not to expect this in year one but, I’m over the moon to be able to announce this ahead of the first anniversary of buying the airport. From this summer, people in Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool will be able to fly from their local airport to the Spanish city, and get to the seaside from Teesside quickly and easily.
Born in 1938, David, 81, who resides in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, suffered with asthma as a child, and his parents bought him a pair of roller skates - to gain strength.
David, author of his book 'A Pritty Fantastic Life', published by Los Montesinos author/journalist and Leader reporter Andrew Atkinson, travelled throughout Europe on active duty. Postings included him serving in Northern Ireland - at the height of the IRA Troubles. Presented his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by Major General Bowes Lyon, David, who retired on May 24, 1978, after 24 years service, is a big fan of Blackpool FC, and says he was privileged to have met late England and Blackpool star Sir Stanley Matthews.
Seprona took the birds into care The latest cockfighting raid follows in the wake of raids in Murcia in 2019 - deemed the biggest raid in Spain - and a raid in Los Montesinos, Alicante, four years ago. In the latest swoop, National police officers arrived unexpectedly at the premises, to find approximately 200 punters watching rooster cockfighting in a ring. The Policia questioned attendees and inspected cockerel boxed-houses, along with confiscating drugs and thousands of euros, used for gambling. The policia raid operation was undertaken - after a tip-off - that a cockerel fighting Championship was to be staged in February, in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Cadiz. Policia reports were undertaken, in violation of public safety regulations; use/possession of drugs in a public place; carrying of prohibited weapons and disobedience.
"It is fantastic to have my life story published - I couldn't be happier," said David, who will be celebrating his 82nd birthday in Pilar de la Horadada in May.

You’d better change your attitude...
Y
ou can get too much of anything. (Ah Lads I like writing this column!)‘The power of positive thinking’ and ‘yes we can’ have been drained dry by the gurus who claim that this spanner will fit every nut. But facts are facts: No matter how frenzied I might embrace positive thinking, or how often I utter, ‘yes I can’, I am not capable of running a sub four minute mile or being stalked by Amy Huberman. All that any of us can be, is the best that we can be and therefore it all boils down to one word, ‘attitude’. Attitude is everything. One of my favourite examples – which I may have told you before; is the local man some years back who was left a farm in a will. But the terms of the will were such that the beneficiary only had the use of the farm for his lifetime, after which it passed on to a nephew of the bachelor farmer who had died. Soon afterwards the temporary owner met a well-meaning neighbour who remarked, ‘pity though that he only left it to you for your day’. A broad smile lit the farm workers face as he replied; ‘Ah not at all – sure wasn’t that all he had it for himself’! Abraham Lincoln said; ‘We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses’: Attitude, attitude, attitude. There are so many things in life that we cannot control, no matter how positive our thinking; but more options fall under the jurisdiction of personal choice and especially ... let’s say it again, attitude. I can decide how I spend my time, whom I spend it with; how I dispense my energy, money and intellect. I can choose how I react to set-backs, and how I deal with the scars of past wounds. Most of all, I can choose my thoughts and this is what guides attitude. Whether you reach success or plummet to failure in life has little to do with your circumstances – but has everything to do with your attitude. Non-achievers will moan all night with tales of their unfortunate circumstances, near misses and hard luck stories. Sc?als will conclude with sighs about it being ‘who you know’, ‘one law for the

rich and one for the poor’ and that he ‘should have gone to Canada’. You will be told that ‘it’s all luck’ – so as to account for the success of others. It isn’t all luck – it is all attitudes. The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our attitude and not upon our circumstances. Attitude starts first thing in the morning. Before you get out of bed, take a moment to settle your thoughts and adopt the best attitude for the day ahead. Don’t allow the worry weasel to get inside your head. Focus on right now, this moment, how important it is to live any day and that you are going to make this one count. Appreciate all the good things around you and very importantly, only dwell on the good people in your life. Show your attitude by giving a friendly ‘hello’ to the people you meet, because today is yours to live only once. My uncle used always say that when you want something done, go to the busiest man you can find. The law of inertia holds that a body at rest tends to remain at rest, whilst a body in motion tends to remain in motion at the same speed. Busy people will remain busy and those who do nothing will continue to do nothing. Successful people remain successful. Happy people tend to remain happy. People who reach their goal, tend to go on scoring goals. The common denominator in all of above is one word, ‘attitude’. Yes, it is possible to change; but a person can only alter his life by altering his attitude of mind. We need to live in the present without anxious dependence upon the future, or self flagellation for our mistakes of the past. Happiness and the blessings of mankind are within all of our reach and we shall be happy with our lot – as long as we have the right attitude.

GARDENING: Plumbago Plumbago, also know as Cape Leadwort, Blue Plumbago and Cape Plumbago, originated from India and South East Asia, where it is widely used as a medicinal plant. It is a shrub, best grown as a vigorous, evergreen climber, typically used for covering large areas, such as walls, growing up to 4 metres high, with a 1.5 metre spread. Despite being a tender plant, Plumbago can be grown on the Costa Blanca quite easily - outside in warm temperatures -also trained up trellis and

fencing. Plumbago prefers a south-facing or west-facing aspect - in full sun - and can grow in all types of soil. Grown in pots, they will need regular watering. Plumbago, which bears masses of intense blue, unscented flowers all summer long - and well into autumn - was used traditionally to treat warts, broken bones and wounds and as a cure for lead poisoning. It can be taken as a snuff - for headaches - and as an emetic, to dispel bad dreams. However, beware, as Plumbago may cause skin irritation and blistering in some people, therefore, do not use Plumbago for medicinal purposes without medical supervision. No toxicity has been reported to birds, cats, dogs, horses or livestock from Plumbago.

The promise was given by Prime Minister Johnson in a letter that he sent to campaigner Harry Schindler who has been campaigning for the right to vote for over 20 years. Boris told Mr Schindler: “Now we have left the EU, it is more important than ever to strengthen the UK‘s ties with the British expat community wherever they might be.” Of course Harry was absolutely delighted to receive the letter from the PM which promised “that we will be allowed to vote on the next election even if we have lived abroad for more than 15 years." Harry, who is 99 years of age and who retired to Italy where he currently resides said that “This is a great victory for all of us patriotic Brits who have campaigned for years to get the vote back.” "I just hope I can make it to the next one given that I'm 100 soon." In the letter Boris told Harry: "The government is committed to scrapping the arbitrary rule that prevents British citizens who have lived abroad for more than 15 years from participating in UK parliamentary elections. “Most British citizens overseas retain deep ties to the United Kingdom. Many still have family here, some will return here, others are drawing a British

QUESADA-ROJALES TO THE GAMBIA Andrew Atkinson talks to former Quesada-Rojales resident Rosemary Le Messurier, who now lives in Guernsey, about The Gambia in Part 1 of a two-part Leader Exclusive interview. IN A TWIST OF FATE, Rosemary Le Messurier and husband Steve, who booked a trip to Egypt in 1997 - cancelled, due to the massacre of tourists at the Temple of Hatshepsut, Luxor - visited The Gambia instead. "We knew little of The Gambia, only that it was in West Africa," said Rosemary. What she saw en-route to the hotel was totally unexpected. A Third World country - one time a territory of Great Britain. Shacks lined the single main road back then, from which inhabitants sold their wares: "We stayed at the Atlantic Hotel, situated on the outskirts of the capital, Banjul," recalled Rosemary.

groups, each with its own 'native' language, the main ones being, but not exclusively, Mandingo speaking Mandinka, Wolof, Fulani (speaking Fula) and Jola," said Rosemary. "Kemo was very proud of the fact that he came from the Mandingo group, the largest," said Rosemary, who on their first trip to Banjul found the number of beggars, especially those with Leprosy, quite upsetting. Most places visited, Kemo accompanied her, learning a great deal from him, and over the next six years became a good friend, with invites to his family compound each year, to see how he had progressed, with Rosemary's help. He had built a solid family home and was cultivating the plot outside, to provide fruit and vegetables - not just for his family - but also neighbours.
Security was tight - the hotel was for visiting dignatories, walking distance of the only Hospital and Presidential Palace.
Back then, priority was given to educating sons, rarely daughters, unless the family was wealthy: "We provided the means for his female relations living at the compound, to attend the local school.
Today, it is re-named the Laico Atlantic. Rosemary was informed not to venture from the grounds and to engage a Tourist Guide that came under a Controller.
"Kemo became a husband and father during this period. His wife was named Hawa, and their first child, a girl, Ma-bintu. "Sadly, before the age of 5, she died of Malaria," said Rosemary.
"We hired a guide, to take us into Banjul. Kemo was our guide, aged 19, who explained guides were obliged to undergo an examination, both as regards to their knowledge of the country, and English speaking capability.
Kemo became a father to two sons, Talibo and Muhamed Lamin: "Whether there were more, we don't know," added Rosemary, who described the early years as a 'voyage of discovery'.
"The Gambian people are divided into Ethnic

The Gambia is built around the river, which flows many miles inland, from the Atlantic, surrounded
by Senegal. "We went up and down river in local boats, sometimes at dawn, to view the birdlife, which is abundant, or during the day to catch a variety of fish, some dangerous to the touch," said Rosemary. Down river provided the chance to go deep sea fishing, as the River Gambia flows into the Atlantic. Visits to markets in Serrekunda and Brikama. Forests, abundant with birds and monkeys.
"A trip to James Island is a 'must', to see the appalling conditions that slaves were held in, en route from the hinterland, to England or the States. "Little of it remains today, due to the ravages of the sea - but the ruins stand as a Memorial to the many that lost their lives there," said Rosemary. *Next week P2 of Rosemary Le Messurier's story - and her quest to find The Gambia family she befriended.

antastic News ! ! Vistabella are the Premier 20 Champions !!! This is the first time in their history ! On Thursday they beat Quesada in the final. The competition comprises of singles, doubles, triples and rinks with ten players of each side playing away and ten at home. Well done all who played and a big cheer for Charlie Watkins their captain. In the leagues on Monday the Albatrosses lost away to San Luis Trekkers 4 – 10 shots 90 to 110. The Drivers , at home, had a good win against the Emerald Ilse Moonrakers 12 – 2 scoring an impressive 128 shots to 79 against. The Eagles had a mighty tussle
against the El Rancho raiders losing 6 – 8 shots for 97 against 99 this is the third time in two weeks shots have either been drawn or within a few numbers, really impressive. Wednesday saw Vistabella in the Winter league take a beating at home to the Emerald Ilse 2 – 10 with shots for 54 and against 97. Friday saw the Lanzadores away to La Marina Sharks winning 4 – 10 with 103 shots for and 87 against. Monday morning found the Pintos playing host to Monte Mar Matadors and adjusted to the conditions quicker than did the Matadors, but as we know the home team will always have the advantage. The Pintos took the rinks by 5 to 1 and the overall shots by a reasonable margin, often a misleading figure.
They were the much stronger team this time and deserved their 10 – 4 victory. Shots 117-97 to the Cubs. Last home match of the season next week, hopefully the Cubs can make amends and continue with their recent good form. Good luck next week Cubs. Also on Friday, the Country Bowls Geckos travelled away to the only grass green in the league at La Manga. Teams go to La Manga every week to try and win a few points if possible, because bowling on grass does not come easily to most bowlers in Spain. For the last 15 years nobody has ever won a match at La Manga!! Today the Champion Team called the GECKOS made history. They not only won their match against La Manga Crusaders, but only lost on one rink. Up to the halfway point, the Geckos were feeling their way and winning on only 2 rinks, but then as usual, they got into gear and started moving forward. One of the early leading rinks lost 13 shots in just two ends which suddenly put them a shot behind. But all the Geckos have character and within three ends they were back ahead. Most of the other rinks that were trailing throughout the game, were closing the gap, and by the last few ends all but one rink was in the lead. The final score was Country Bowls Geckos 11, La Manga Crusaders 3. Shots 109 to the Geckos and 106 to La Manga.
The Raiders meanwhile were at Vistabella playing the Eagles and put in a splendid away performance in taking an equal share of the rinks and the overall shots by a margin of 2. On Tuesday our postponed matches from the 17th were played, the Pintos played Greenlands Sycamores in a close run match with both sides taking 3 rinks, whilst the Pintos took the overall shots. Meanwhile the Raiders were up against another Greenlands team, the Chestnuts and put in a good performance taking 4 rinks and the shots. On Friday morning the Broncos played host to Emerald Isle Outlaws and put in a good performance in taking 4 rinks and the overall shots, with both losses being by just one shot. Ngaio Baldwin, Pete Baldwin and Ron Greenstreet 21-17. Bryan John, Gill Bartlett and Rob Clark 21-16. Tony Abbott, Gary Dunstone and David Wright 20-17. Helga Schiffmann, Brian Gilham and Dave Haynes 15-16. Peter Blackburn, Paul Durham and Keith Longshaw 17-18. Janet Wright, Debbie Ham and Brian Harris 28-13.
This result has also put the Geckos out of reach from any of their opponents as Winners of the Second Division League. Fantastic Geckos!! Well done all.
In the afternoon the Mustangs entertained another Emerald Isle team, the Cavaliers, in a match were most matches were very close. Both teams took 3 rinks, with the mustangs taking the overall shots. Val Ryder, Sarah Taylor and Jim Taylor 18-15. Irene Thomson, Mick Cox and Eddie Thomson 46-3. Sheila Cox, Diane Yates and Richard Lee 13-17. Geoff Jones, John Richards and Henry Ryder 15-17. Ann C Clark, Denise Morgan and Bob Morgan 19-21. Barbara Jones, Malc Sykes and Bob Taylor 17-16.

La Siesta Bowls Club by Alan Carr Monte Mar Bowls & Social Club Division B games started with the Blues having an away game at Montemar against the Matadors, where Ann & Robert Heath with Harold Charleton were the only team who gained a win (15-13) with a couple of the other rinks going very close without accumulating any further points finishing 2-12 (Shots 94-113). Good effort by all the players. At home the Golds, played host to Emerald Isle Claymores knowing they would be a hard team to beat but battled on to win on two rinks finding the visitors too strong on the remaining ones, result 4-10 (Shots 80-118). The winning rinks from; Shelia Millward, Irene & Dave Laverick (18-5). Wendy Ralph, Tony Campbell & Alan Mawer (19-18). Apollos of the Enterprise Division, had an afternoon game playing the Alsations at San Miguel where it was important to secure a win as the home side are presently just below us, the team obliged by achieving a result of 8-6, getting 2 points for the overall shots 101-95 with three rink wins by; Joy Gardiner, Norman Adcroft & George Richardson (24-10). Ann & Robert Heath with Harold Charleton (24-9). Pat & Brian Harman with Brian Gardiner (14-9). An away game for the Pioneers (Voyager Division) playing the Toreadors at Montemar who won on four rinks with the overall shots going to the home side. Two Winning rinks from; Derek Smith, Tony Campbell & Alan Mawer´s who motored into the lead then midway through the game got stuck on 13 shots but managed to pick up again to win (22-18). Gary Randall, Ann Edgerton & Ken Dullaway´s team managed to keep their heads in front for most of the game finishing (23-21). With the game ending 4-10 (Shots 90-139). In the Winter League we welcomed BBC who just completed a long journey to play at La Siesta, as the game progressed it looked like we were going to have an easy win on one of the rinks but unfortunately the wheel fell off by dropping 20 shots in the last 5 ends. Skip Mike Edward´s team came to the rescue with one point for a draw by picking up 3 shots on the last end (15-15). Result 1-11 (Shots 63-114). La Marina Bowls By Barry Latham Oh Dear disastrous start to the week. Wish I´d never mentioned 10 – 4 because that is what we lost by in both Monday matches. In the Enterprise Div the Explorers played against the Beagles over at San Miguel and it was 10 – 4 to them. Our winning rinks were Cliff Rawlinson, Wendy Latham and Hilary Cronk 15 – 12. The other rink comprising of Alex Whyte, Arthur Cronk and the Anne Stone won handsomely 22 – 12. The Pathfinders at home in the Discovery Div played E.I. Neptunes who won, would you believe, 10 – 4. Again two winning rinks with Garth Slater, Bernie Carr and Jim Monaghan victorious by five shots 17 – 12 followed by firing Captain John Rae, the great Dave McGaw, ee man and Dave Slighton who won 21 – 18. This could be short but not sweet- Travelled up to Bonalba to play in the Winter League. The thing was we didn´t play and very embarrassingly we lost 12 – 0. As someone said nobody died. Yet again came 10 – 4 on Friday when the Sharks played at home against Vistabella Lanzadores and succumbed, your right, 10 – 4, our two winning rinks consisted of Cliff Rawlinson, Jean Fowkes and Janet Parsons who won 20 – 14 and Shirly Hadaway, Wendy Latham and Steve Douglas winning 15 – 10. Ah another 10- 4 but this time we won when the Seagulls went to Vistabella to play the Conquistadors and you´ll never guess the score,
At home to La Siesta Blues another good result for the Matadors. Winning on five rinks and only losing by two shots on the sixth rink, well done to Lynne Armitage, Don Cleeter skip Ronnie Cairns, Sheila Roberts, Bill Judd skip Phil Goble, Tanya Oliver, Alan Ashberry skip Jack Burrell, Mike Farrelly, Margerat Finlayson skip Barry Watson and Pauline Merry, Danny King skip Chris Merry. Shots 113 – 94, Points 12 – 2 Away at El Rancho as expected it was a tough match, a couple of rinks got off to a good start but eventually the Pintos took the lead. Well done to the winning rink of Mike Farrelly, Bill Judd skip Len Daniels. Shots 73 – 149 Points 2 – 12 Away at Quesada in the Winter league was another tough match this week. We only managed to win on one rink well done to Jean Chamberlain, Danny King, Steve Hindle skip Neil Crawford. Shots 56 – 122 , Points 2 – 10 On Friday the Toreadors were away to the Greenlands Cedars, we won on two rinks and drew on two rinks. Points were even, but with more shots we gained the extra two points. Well done to Sue Bounds, Paul Dodd skip Neil Crawford and Desiree Freeman, Howie Williams skip John Hunt. Shots 102 – 93, Pts 8 – 6 The following Monday we were at home against the La Siesta Pioneers, who were second in the league. We won on four rinks and the overall shots, well done to the winners Wendy Sheridan, Dave Thomas skip Keith Young, Jan Soars, Diane Horsington skip Ian Hamilton, Jean Chamberlain, Iain Sheridan skip Joan Harding and Sue Bounds, Paul Dodd skip Ian Gibbons. This win moves the Toreadors into second place, well done everyone. Shots 139 – 90, Points 10 – 2 For Further information check out our website or email info@montemarbowls.com. We are also on face book.
10 – 4 to us. Admittedly they had a rink short nevertheless the Seagulls won three rinks. John Morgan, that man Dave McGaw and Lorita Rae won 23 – 20 next came Garth Slater, Paul Tregoing and Jim Monaghan 16 - 12 and our little ray of sunshine John led Reg Jackson and Mo Taylor to a 26 – 15 victory. Don´t forget Finals Weekend Saturday 7t h plus Sunday 8th March with a paella at 2.00pm Saturday and a buffet after the Presentation on Sunday afternoon. Forgot, Men’s Triples John Withers, Garth Slater and Tom Spencer v Reg Jackson, Dave McGaw and Cliff Rawlinson playing Thursday at 2.00pm. Congratulations to both El Capitan and C.C.'s Flyers, Division 1 and 2 champions respectively. El Cap remain unbeaten, but taken to the wire in two games, whilst the Flyers lost just the one, both comfortable champs. David Minto levelled on d4, despite a three figure score from Neil Poole. Terry Kirby d12 gave the Panthers a slender lead completing the triples. Harvey Lane made it 1-3 on d10 in the first pairs, Poole again the main resistance. Gail Murray d4 and then Prockter 140, d16 made it all square at the break. The match then swung C.C.'s way, winning the first two singles through McKay on d10 and Poole d4. Now 5-3 Jackie Sullivan accomplished a fine win ( where many fail ) over Bliss Wright, the game now delicately poised at 5-4. Gail Murray edged out Michelle Lane, to ensure at least a draw, with two to play. Harvey Lane just got over the line on d1 and a ton, in his defeat of stalwart Prockter133 now 6-5. So a last match shootout featuring in the red corner Cameron Nesbitt, in the blue, Alan Sullivan. Despite no three figure scores recorded, it was a close encounter, Sullivan triumphant in earning the visitors a deserved point. Bliss Wright and Harvey Lane MOTM. Probably a fair result, a point apiece, in this end of season clash, where the Pirates entertained the Legends. The match really didn;t come alive until the singles, Martin Hastings coming closest to a three figure score with a 95. Gameshots from Brian Nash d20, Paul " birthday boy " Chickd20, Yvonne Rouffignac d4, and Sid Cross s20, d20, giving Trinity a 4-0 advantage, Terry David d3 and Sue Christie s18, d9, replying for Legends. A further two legs went the visitors way,in the singles, Barry Shingler and John Crabbe making it level scores. Rouffignac 125 held her nerve in a 2-1 tussle over Ralph Christie, two clinical finishes the difference, s13,d20 and s19, s6, d20, to go one ahead. Cross made it six for the hosts on d20 and d10 after 3x100, opponent Sandra Crabbe showing some form with117, 116. Les Adams pulled out all the stops for 5-6 with 4x100 and a tasty 64 out on tops, in a three legger versus Chick, is he really 42? The Queens then went on a royal rampage, taking the next five. Jonny Nash the only " Chick " offering any resistance with a 105. Maggie Morgan d1, Turner d13, Her Highness Debs Wright s3, s16, d8, Ronnie Bowden d1 and her excellency d8, doing the Depot business and gaining a point. Groves made it two for the visitors, only for Marie Cummins to spoil the Chicks evening, by nailing d6, for the vital seventh leg and match. Nash made it three for the Chicks on d20, the game now beyond them. Turner made it three winning doubles on d19, leaving Morgan to complete the match on d18 for 9-3. MOTM Debbie Wright, Jonny Nash. Always a good night when the Tiaras tussle with the Ale House Lads. Some great, close games that really put the wind up the chaps, resulted in even-stevens at the halfway stage. Dario Sierra finished 2 legs and Andre pulled a snazzy 3-darter, 19-20-D17, for the 3rd. Pat Schofield D6, D6 and Simone de Lacy D16 did the biz for the ladies with some good scoring from mother and daughter Sharon (121) and Rhianna Marshall (100) in the pairs. Dynamo Dario (2 x 100), dangerous on the D4, clocked his 2nd and 3rd of the match to beat Denise Green (126) in the first of the singles. Glen Richardson's nemesis de Lacy (100) gave him a good match but let him have the victory this time. Elizabeth Cowan fought and won 2 - 1 against a very chivalrous Andre Wing but little Lelly Bear Eagles (92, 95) could not muster enough against the warmed up Alan Havelock (3 x00) D8, D4. Patty Poo succumbed to a poorly Karl Mallinson, who in fairness, probably ought to have self-quarantined so that we could have won that one. MOTM's Pat Schofield and Dario Sierra. There was a distinct end of term atmosphere at this last league match of the season. The Tipsy Toad was unavailable to the home side so the match was moved to Milos – many thanks to them for hosting us at short notice. Both sides could only muster 5 players – but that had little effect on an enjoyable evening’s darts. To be fair the overall standard was pretty poor but there were some notable exceptions – Graham White won his singles match against Graham Solomons (100,100,140) with some very consistent darts that included a 140 and rapid fire finishing. Billy Dolling also had his moments, scoring well with four tons, 120 and a 140 – good enough to win him man of the match. By contrast there was some –let’s say - ordinary – Baz ‘here we go’ Schofield struggled somewhat in his match then suddenly produced a 133 out of nowhere. With that he levelled his singles match against Steve Godwin who had surprised his team mates with some unexpected form. Undaunted Steve stuck in a couple of 90+ scores to take the game. The match ended in a satisfactory draw – the Toppers got the point they needed to stay third and the Loungers took some good scalps along the way. Phil de Lacy got the man of the match for the Toppers – not sure why – it could be because he beat Loungers captain Jim McKay in the singles, who knows – any way I am grateful for my only MOTM of the season.

PUTTING TECHNIQUE All golfers will understand what I mean when I say that putting is a game within a game and we all have good days and very bad days with the putting wand in our hands. So is there anything that we can do to make us better putters other than practice for endless hours and just get frustrated because we are in-graining bad habits? Phil Mikkelsen is one of the best players over the last 20 years and considered by many to have the best short game of them all and he has studied all of the best putters over the years to see if they have anything in common and has ‘discovered’ TWO key features to being a good putter, namely: Carry the hands high at address because this prevents the hands moving to the inside or outside on the take away and therefore the face of the putter opening to much then needing correction on the path back to the ball. Feel that on the takeaway this is lead by the heel of the club rather than the toe of the club which again helps to keep the club on a good path away from the ball and prevents the club face from opening too much. So there you are and if you struggle with consis-

CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL Lady Buttons in good shape Tiger Roll will be the one horse we’re all looking forward to running at Cheltenham - trainer Gordon Elliott. By Andrew Atkinson Lady Buttons is in good shape ahead of the four day 2020 Cheltenham Festival meeting during March 10-13. "She's in great shape ahead of her second Cheltenham Festival," trainer Philip Kirby told me. Ten year old Lady Buttons is entered in the Close Brothers Hurdle and the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival. "A decision as to which race she will run will be made at the last minute," said Philip, based at Green Oaks Farm, Richmond, Yorkshire. "I will pick the best option - either won't be an easy race - but hopefully one of the two will be easier. She is as well as I’ve had her," said Philip.
Monday 2nd - Sunday 8th March, 2020 Lady Buttons is owned by Jayne Sivills and Philip added: “The owners would like to run her in the Champion Chase - The Mares’ race looks particularly hot." Gordon Elliott trained Envoi Allen is tipped to win at Cheltenham - either in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle or Supreme Novices Hurdle: "If it's heavy I wouldn’t rule out a switch back to the Supreme," said Elliott. At present Envoi Allen will go to post in the Ballymore: "He’s had three runs over hurdles and might have a schooling, to have another spin over hurdles. He is in good form - we’re very happy with him,” said Elliott. Delta Work, amongst the favourites for the Gold Cup, Envoi Allen and Tiger Roll, in the Cross Country Chase, are Ace cards in Elliott's playing pack: "Tiger Roll will be the one horse that we’re all looking forward to running at Cheltenham," said Elliott. Elliott said of Grade One winner Delta Work, a leading contender for the Gold Cup: “I think he’s made for the race. His style of racing will suit three miles, two furlongs - the softer the ground, the better.” On Apple’s Jade being at the Festival, Elliott said: "If she runs she’ll go for the Stayers’." Broken-leg jockey victim Jack Kennedy will miss Baldomero fished and worked the land. A simple life. Pedreña was like the St Andrews of Spain during Seve's youth. In Pedreña everyone played golf - a pastime in bars - and it became a way of life for him. Pedreña is situated across the bay from Santander, in waters that evokes San Francisco, where the Spanish Royal family went on vacation at the Palacio de La Magdalena.
King Alfonso XIII was a keen golfer, and ordained a golf course to be designed - for his holidays - at a price. Focus on legendary golf star Seve Ballesteros
In Part 2 of Spain late legendary golf star Seve Ballesteros' career Andrew Atkinson returns to the 1979 Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes and to where it all began in his hometown of Pedreña, in the northern coastal region of Cantabria. “Severiano Ballesteros was like a racehorse; he loved to have the bit in his mouth and to take off and run. Seve was a great frontrunner, because he played without fear, or so it seemed” - Hale Irwin. Seve brought flair to golf Ballesteros, one of four boys, grew up in the hills above Pedreña, sleeping in a bedroom above livestock stables in a house built by his great-grandparents in the 1880s. Seve played a role in looking after the family’s 14 milking cows, while his mother, Carmen, ran the household and tended gardens. His father
Real Golf Club de Pedreña opened in 1928, with the King serving as an Honorary President. Seve's home was within driving range of the course, so much so, he hit balls from their sloping front yard down the hill and over a rock wall to the second green! Seve, aged six, along with his brothers, caddied at the club where the head professional was their maternal uncle Ramón Sota, a player who tied sixth at the 1965 Masters. In his youth Seve was handed down a 3-iron head and scavenged for sticks, jamming them into the head, prior to soaking the makeshift shaft to swell the wood, to fit tighter within the hosel. The shaft often lasted a couple of days - before snapping. Caddies were allowed to play Real Pedreña once annually, and Seve took the opportunity with purloined balls, creating his own course. Seve even played in moonlight! He tied handkerchiefs onto branches and planted them into the ground. Seve repeated the format,

Who Dares Wins, successful when winning at Kempton on February 22, could head for Cheltenham in the RSA Chase: "We freshened him up - to see if Cheltenham was on the agenda," said trainer Alan King. Eight year old Who Dares Wins has raced at Longchamp, Aintree, Cheltenham and Chester, amongst others, with the 2020 Chester Cup eyed in May, having been second at the Rodeye last year. Seve also ventured to nearby Somo beach, surrounded by scrubby dunes - similar to what he encountered at Royal Lytham. Seve said: "It was a very strange experience to walk around a golf course at night, because all the reference points that help estimate distances vanished. "I knew where the shot was heading from the way my hands felt the hit and from the sound the ball made when it hit the ground. By practicing at night I learned to feel the grass under my feet, to measure distances intuitively and adjust the power of the strokes I wanted to make.” Aged 10, Seve finished second in his flight in Real Pedreña’s caddie tournament. Aged 12 he shot 79, to win. Dubbed a 'magician and a special talent' club stewards allowed Seve unlimited playing privileges. Seve joined his brother Manuel on the Euro tour in 1974, aged 16, sponsored by a wealthy Madrid physician. In 1976 Seve played in the Open Championship. In 1979 Seve won the Open Championship - with commentary rallied to Pedreña, via phone. Their own village boy had won the biggest tournament in the world. The headquarters of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation are in Santander, where the airport is named after him. In situ in a park in Pedreña a faux-Swilcan Bridge and bronze statue captures Seve’s iconic fist-pump that followed his victorious birdie on the 72nd final hole of the 1984 Open Championship, at the Old Course. Seve Ballesteros died, aged 54, in 2011, of a cancerous brain tumor. At the family home in Pedreña, Seve’s son Miguel, said: "When we are here it allows us to feel closer to my dad.”

Olympic event moved to Valencia Coronavirus outbreak sees Olympic triathlon qualifiers switched from Chengdu to Valencia By Andrew Atkinson Chief Sports Editor Leader Exclusive
VALENCIA has been chosen to host the Olympic mixed relay triathlon qualifying event - switched to Spain from Chengdu following the coronavirus situation in China. Chengdu which was set to hold the qualifying stages on May 9, will now take place in Valencia on May 1. Over 11,000 athletes are set to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, during July 24-August 9, with 206 Nations taking part. It is the final chance for the mixed teams to secure a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The qualifying phase for triathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics comprises a total of 110 athletes, from respective NOCs. All athletes undergo a qualifying process to earn a place in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games through the Continental Qualification Events, the World Qualification Event, and the Olympic Qualification List that began on May 11, 2018, concluding on May 11, 2020. Ten NOCs will each earn four quota spots - two per gender - through mixed team qualification, with the top seven NOCs in the ITU mixed relay rankings of March 31, 2020 qualifying. NOCs, other than those seven, can participate in the 2020 ITU Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Event, with three more teams earning Olympic quota places via that competition. The individual rankings of May 11 2020 will provide quota spots to 31 athletes in each gender. The first 26 spots will go sequentially to the best ranked athletes, subject to a limit of three per NOC (if all three are in the top 30) or two per NOC (if the third is outside the top 30). For the purposes of this allocation, any NOC that qualified through mixed relay (that has two quota places in each gender) must ignore its two highest-ranked competitors in each gender. Five additional spots will be awarded by continent, to the best-ranked remaining athlete from that continent, whose NOC has not already qualified any quota places. Two places per gender are reserved for the host, with two final places in each gender awarded by Tripartite Commission invitation. The Games will see the introduction of new and additional competitions at the Summer Olympics, including 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX, and Madison cycling, along with additional mixed events. Under new IOC policies, that allow the host organising committee to add sports to the Olympic programme to augment the permanent core Olympic events, the Games will see karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts. The 2020 Olympic Games will also see the return of baseball and softball for the first time since 2008.

Disappointing trip to Aspe for OCosta Vets
Aspe UD ................................7 Orihuela Costa Vets...............1
Orihuela Costa Veteranos’s trip to Aspe UD ends in defeat after 5 minutes of madness from the referee.
Scorer - Phillip Dewhurst
With the home side lying second in the table and eager to avenge the 7-3 defeat they suffered early on in the season this away trip looked tough on paper.
Feast of International Youth Football at Pinatar Arena Spain’s U18 and U19 teams have arrived at Pinatar Arena where they are preparing for a friendly international double against Denmark. The U19 squad, current European Champions, will face Denmark on Wednesday, at 11.30 am on the main Pinatar Arena, and then at 5:00 pm it will be the turn of the two U18 squads. Entry to both matches is free. Currently the Pinatar facilities are hosting Winterthur of
Switzerland, Dalian Pro of China and the women's U20 team from Russia while during the coming week the women's national teams of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ukraine and Iceland will all arrive for the Pinatar Cup 2020.
It was Aspe UD who started the game better and reaped the rewards with two early goals. The first a penalty and the 2nd from a free kick. OCV hit back after Paul Gardner broke down the left wing and pulled a ball back from the touch line for Phil Dewhurst to squeeze in at the near post, but Aspe once again hit the back of the Costa net to make it 3-1. Good play from the visitors saw them score another after a blocked shot rebounded off Alan Kennedy from close range to make it 3-2. The referee pointed to the centre spot the score board showed 3-2 but then inexplicably changed
Las Salinas Petanca The Mixed Triples was held at San Luis with 58 teams lining up in Glorious Sunshine. All teams played 4 games with only two remaining unbeaten. Taking the Gold were Jacki and Daniel Bertin and Alain Volard from Franco Belgas with +34 pts.
