FROM PAGE ONE As the Vuelta gained prestige and popularity the race was lengthened and its reach began to extend all around the globe, so much so that it has been expanded from one of primarily Spanish participation; with riders from all over the world now participating in the UCI World Tour event, every year. This year the season’s final Grand Tour event rolled out just over a week ago with a stellar cast tempted by yet another demanding route despite the absence of 2014 champion Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo). World class competitors still include Tour de France winner Chris Froome (Team Sky) and former Vuelta champions Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), alongside Tour runner-up Nairo Quintana (Movistar), and Giro d’Italia podium finishers Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa (both Astana). Home favourite Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) is also in the mix, as is rising star Rafal Majka – the leader of Tinkoff-Saxo in place of teammate Contador. Stage 8 of the race into Murcia saw Trek Factory Racing's Jasper Stuyven digging deep to triumph in the sprint finish. But the young Belgian announced his withdrawal just a few hours later due to a broken left scaphoid. Stuyven had been one of the many involved in a large crash earlier in the day which happened with around 50km left, causing at least four riders also to retire. And with one of them, Belgian Kris Boeckmans, still in an induced coma after suffering concussion, the riders entered Torrevieja

in somber mood. Waiting for the riders. Tour de France winner Chris Froome (GB/Team Sky) had finished with the favourites as Esteban Chaves retained the race lead just 36 seconds in front of Irelands 3rd placed Nicolas Roche (Ire/Team Sky). So, as the action moved to the Costa Blanca on Sunday the 168 km Stage 9 was still generating a great deal of excitement. Setting off from Torrevieja’s ‘Old Man of the Sea statue’ during the early afternoon, the 190 riders headed along the seafront before joining the N332 to Alicante. They crossed through Benidorm and then onto to Calpe, the winterbase of a lot of pro teams, before finishing the stage during the late afternoon in Cumbre del Sol. With the Dumoulin beating Chris Froome to the line in a sprint finish from Spain’s Joaquim Rodriguez in 3rd, the big Dutchman leapfrogged both Chaves and Rodriguez to take the race leadership. Froome also made up placings, moving up the field from 11th to 8th, just over a minute behind the race leader. Froome was disappointed not to win yesterday. "I thought I had it there for a second but Dumoulin is showing incredible form in this race and hats off to him. He's a young rider with a bright future ahead of him." But with another dozen stages still to race there is still plenty of competition across the rest of the race, with 5th placed Valverde once again among the contenders for the green points jersey, having won the classification in 2012 and 2013, and underrated Irishman Nicolas Roche of Team SKY, also closing in on the race leader. Cambiemos Orihuela calls for ban on circuses using live animals Plenary sessions and circuses … with animals

Today, yesterday, the day before yesterday and on many other occasions, the recurring message received by Cambiemos Orihuela is one asking that action be taken against the mistreatment and abuse of animals. It is logical that Cambiemos Orihuela is the recipient of these demands considering that in our participatory program, there are several points on this topic; being the only program and the only political force in the Municipal Council, which includes proposals dealing with the protection of animals and plant life and the only political force with a permanent Environmentalist-Animalist task force. There are various issues regarding the mistreatment of animals that Cambiemos Orihuela receives every day. But now in summer, we have noticed with great frequency, and utter helplessness, concerns about circuses and other shows based on animal cruelty, traveling around our municipality. At this particular moment, in Campoamor -although it has travelled through the entire municipality of Orihuela- is a circus profiting from slave labour of wild animals, outside their natural habitat, forced to pose and behave unnaturally. This type of show is the abuse, but the persons carrying it out are those in attendance, without fully being aware of the damage being done to the animals, and moreover, to

future generations who will grow up accepting this behaviour. This archaic and barbaric custom governing our relationship with other living beings, and which is something quite utilitarian and lacking in compassion - one of the distinguishing factors of the human from other animals brings us down to a different level. We are not born with a lack of compassion, we are taught it when young, desensitizing our children to keep our violent traditions and behaviour and gratuitous abuse. Children are the key to changing future generations’ way of thinking to be more compassionate toward animals and our environment in general. Wild and domesticated animals outside their environment, in cages, forced to behave and pose unnaturally, at times in cramped quarters and malnourished; beaten and abused is one of the moments when a child learns to consider animals as things for exploitation, use and enjoyment. This is far from a world in harmony with nature, where humans may leverage resources and relate with other animals. In nature, animals relate with each other and feed off each other but I am not aware of any species that creates small concentrations camps that treat other animals as commercial merchandise, and, above all, there is no record of any other species abusing others for the sole purpose of profit and entertainment. That is exclusively human. While I do not believe that one message such as this can change something so imbedded in our society, if it makes one person reflect on the issue, I will be satisfied. The determining factor has to be public policy. We need to reform our outdated ordinance related to the mistreatment of animals, which currently governs, very poorly, our relationship with animals. In past legislations, the Green Party sought a minimal reform seeking to prevent circuses with animals from entering the municipality. Only the Socialist Party supported that motion, which was subject to ridicule, con-

tempt and disregard by other member parties of the Council. Municipalities around Spain are starting to declare themselves ‘free zones’ of these types of shows. In many of these cases, there was opposition from PP, but in others, such as Malaga, this past January, the idea was theirs to prohibit these types of shows along with others shows. It would be a pleasant surprise if Orihuela would pass a similar measure as in Malaga. From Cambiemos Orihuela, and especially from the Ecological Group, we are working tirelessly on this matter, proposing total reform of the ordinance, by writing another that not only addresses the exploitation of animals by humans, but also that addresses a just and dignified relationship of persons with animals. Mayor resolves to fix concerns of Costa Residents The mayor and his councillors met last week with representatives of the Federation of Orihuela Costa

Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, together with the councilors of Beaches and street cleaning, Sofia Alvarez and Noelia Grao, met on Wednesday with representatives of the Federation of Orihuela Costa, where they listened to their collective demands for urgent improvements required by residents of the Orihuela Costa. "Now is the time to put on the table all of the Costa’s requirements and to decide exactly how those needs will be addressed during the winter months in order to make sure that everything is as it should be and ready for the influx of tourists for the next summer season," said Bascuñana after his meeting with the neighborhood group. The mayor added that "in just two months in office and with the limitations that were inherited from the previous regime his government has made significant improvements to the infrastructure and the services enjoyed by the residents of the coast. He said that ”We have achieved great strides in the Orihuela coast, particularly in relation to the increase in the municipal cleaning services, urban transport, quality and maintenance of beaches, and even with the extension of hours of opening of the Tourist Office.

In response to the demands made by members of the Ciudadanos party Bascuñana said that the government team is already working on the preparation of an ordinance to regulate future macrobotellones two of which have recently been held in Campoamor, with particular respect to the overcrowding experienced at both events. With attendance at the two festivals both exceeding 8,000 revellers, this has been one of the main complaints of the neighborhood group. He also said that the council will not accept the claim made by the organisers that the cost of resources used to organise and make good after such events, cleaning, security and much more, be borne by the municipal authorities. Following the meeting the President of the Federation of Orihuela Costa, Joaquín Capel said, "We are seeing a great willingness on the part of the government team to make the necessary improvements, and we have already experienced some significant gestures in their recent performances but they could and still need to be improved for which we need to see a significant increase in the budget.

New Leftist Councils quick to withdraw support for Bullfighting nimal rights campaigners are making themselves increasingly heard in Spain with many activists now convinced that Bullfighting will have completely disappeared in the country within the next few years.

A

And it's not only because of the cruelty that the activity is losing support; there are economic reasons too for the predictions that it is a dying sport. In recent weeks the new leftist mayor of the northwestern city of A Coruna withdrew 50,000 euros in bullfight subsidies whilst vowing to find a better way to spend it and then days later Julian Bolanos, the mayor of Villafranca de los Caballero, a central Spanish town of around 5,000 inhabitants, announced that he was taking the 18,000 euros of public funding for bullfights to invest in textbooks and other educational material. Now seen as a luxury in times of economic hardship, nearly every town and city in the country once had a traditional fixture in it’s summer festival but now, following local and regional elections last May, there have been at least 24 ruling, pro-bullfighting council’s which have been ousted from town halls and regional governments across the country and replaced by leftist coalitions that are questioning funding for bullfights. Just a few weeks ago The Leader reported on the port city of Alicante, which is pushing for a referendum on removing bull events as part of town festivals. In Madrid, the world's bullfighting capital, new leftist Mayor Manuela Carmena is studying withdrawing subsidies and declaring the capital an animal-friendly city. That move has already been taken by Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, also administered by a new left-wing mayor. The major city of Valencia, also has a new leftist town hall team that has axed bullfight subsidies, while nearly a dozen other towns in the region are calling for the sport to be banned. Following ten deaths during the summer season, one of the deadliest ever for the sport, the alternative ‘passtime’ of Bull Running, is also coming under increasing pressure to rein in its activities. This year's toll matches the record of ten deaths in bull runs set in 2009. Just two weeks ago four men died in a single weekend after being gored by half-tonne fighting bulls in four different towns. However one supporter of Bull Running, Jorge Rosco,

a 37-year-old gas distributor who takes part in 25-30 ing bullfighting, ending a two-year ban by the former bull runs across the country every year, said the probleftist town hall. ‘Pochi’ takes Gold in Euro Team Racing Torrevieja’s ‘Pochi’, 2nd from the right, celebrates Gold with his team mates

Cruising into To r r e v i e j a When asked about the city’s state of readiness prior to the arrival of the cruise ship Amadea on 22 September the Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, said that the Torrevieja is ready to receive the cruise passengers with open arms. She was responding to criticism from some local political organisations suggesting that the whole venture would be a farce. She said many of the things said recently had been manipulated and distorted, noting that "the unnecessary controversy only hurts the image of Torrevieja when the city has the potential and is ready to receive this and many future cruises that will attract much needed income into the area”. The councillor said that the arrival of the cruise, which last year anchored in Benidorm and Denia, "was organized over a year ago with the German shipping company, Phoenix Reisen, quite probably choosing Torrevieja possibly because it is

less expense than many other ports, but it still has the movement facilities to get the travellers out and about, to activities and events around the area.” She also said that during a recent meeting attended in the Marina Salinas with the mayor, José Manuel Dolon, and the first deputy mayor, Pablo Samper, the organisers said that they were able to offer necessary facilities and comfort for disembarking passengers including an information tent which will be erected in the Marina Salinas near to the point where the cruise passengers will land. The ship will arrive in Torrevieja at about 16.30 hours on the 22nd with the passengers expected to return to the ship at around nine in the evening. Most of them will be pensioners from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Tourist Train will also be available to ferry them all around the town.

José María Wandosell, 'Pochi', of Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja, won the European Team Racing Championship last week, a success he shared with his four Spanish teammates, Alicia Fras, Julia Miñana, Jerónimo Martín-Lago and Adolfo Villalón, on Italy’s Lake Ledro The Torrevieja yachtsman played an important role within the team and was one of the keys to the success of Spain in many of the races, although we must highlight the work of the whole team that has made possible the Spanish victory in the Optimist class. Spain reached the final stages looking

like serious title contender but they knew that they must first overcome the might of the Dutch team in the semi final. In the showdown, the best of three the Dutch got their noses in front before 'Pochi' came through to show his strength dominating the final two races to provide a Spanish victory. The first day of the final against Turkey was disappointing for all the competitors because of a lack of wind, leaving the title to be decided on the second day. The Spanish team were determined from the start claiming a clear victory in the first race by taking all of the

first three places. Turkey came back to even the scores in the second race but in the third and decisive race, Spain emerged as clear winners to establish themselves as the champions of Europe, a victory that was quite clearly etched in Torrevieja colours. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

"We're all-inclusive" – Set yourself free! The newly elected President of the Canary Islands produced a very good sound bite last week, no doubt knowing that it would go down exceedingly well with most businesses on the island that cater for tourists. Basically, he was saying that hotels that offer all-inclusive deals to their guests are doing a great disservice to the islands. It is one of those sound bites that nearly everyone on the island will have sympathy with, other than the internationally owned hotels and tour companies that sell such deals. It is something that most of us have been saying for years, since the popularity of ‘all-inclusive’ holidays took off. Essentially, all-inclusive hotel deals do very little to help the local economy. It is true that some of the money paid to hotels finds its way into the pockets of hotel staff, and maybe some local produce. However, the profits are sucked overseas into the companies that own the large hotel chains and do very little to benefit the islands. This is cash that visitors are not spending in local restaurants and bars and, as such, many excellent venues are closing, or are in deep trouble. From the alternative point of view, I can appreciate that the elderly, and families with children may appreciate the benefits of an all-inclusive deal. Elderly folk, in particular, may not want the bother, or have the energy to find a restaurant in the evening and we all know how

quickly kids can run up the bill with ice creams, colas etc. In the ‘Benidorm style’ world, the 'all-inclusive' wrist tag means that there are no concerns about unexpected expensive, large restaurant and bar bills; everything is paid for before departure, and visitors can, in theory, arrive without a euro in their pocket for the duration of their holiday. Many of our friends who stay in hotels on the island do so on a half board or bed and breakfast basis, leaving them free to explore local restaurants in the evening. This offers a choice of local cuisine, variety and an experience that many will see as the point of going on an overseas holiday. Other friends who book an ‘all-inclusive break’ are usually restricted to the time that they can eat, and avoid eating out elsewhere in the evening simply because they have already paid for it. They also claim "We cannot eat lunch, because we will be eating a big meal this evening, which we have already paid for". These restrictions tend to take the sparkle and variety out of a holiday, and reduce the flexibility that a holiday should provide. Simply because it is ‘free’ and we can eat and drink as much as we like may not be the best way to enjoy the holiday experience. In their defence, some will say that by eating in their hotel they can be assured of the same quality throughout the holiday. Maybe, but isn't exploring, making decisions, trying out new things and enjoying different surroundings all part of the holiday experience? Does collecting almost the same meal from the allinclusive buffet each evening and returning to table 63 offer the same experience? Despite the disadvantages of going all-inclusive, many local restaurants and bars have their issues too. Irregular pricing, unduly variable food quality and service are all issues that require continual monitoring and correction. We noticed this on our own recent holiday, which was bed and breakfast only; we found great difficulty finding a restaurant that would cater for a specific diet, in our case vegetarian. Despite a good number of restaurants, most were closed on Mondays, either because it was their day off, or closed for a week or two for seasonal holidays. Maybe a little local coordination would have tempted visitors to stay in the town to eat. As a result, we had little alternative but

Liberate yourself, and throw away that plastic 'all inclusive' wristband for a few days. Enjoy the local nightlife

to eat in the hotel on two evenings, since the only option was a long taxi journey to another town to find a restaurant that was open. Despite the President's words, it is not a black and white issue. Visitors have the right to spend their hard earned cash as they wish. Local restaurants and bars should play their part, cut out complacency and make every effort to make visitors want to eat in their premises. The successful ones will succeed, and the half-hearted ones will fail. As for holidaymakers, please give local bars and restaurants a chance. Liberate yourself, be brave and throw away that plastic 'all inclusive' wristband for a few days. As far as the Canary Islands are concerned, I doubt you will regret it. Just Brass return after summer break This week sees JB Brass Band return to rehearsing after a short Summer break. However, not every member will be returning to the stand, as the break also saw the retirement of one of it's oldest and founder members. Don Craven, Cornet player has decided to retire from playing at the ripe old age of 74. He started playing at the age of 12 when his Dad gave him a cornet in Blackpool. Don has had a long and international playing career. He played with the Fleet Air Station band during the war and returned to the Isle of Man on discharge before later emigrating to Canada and then California. He retired to Spain 20 years ago and has played with many groups as well as being one of the founder members of JB Brass Band. Don will be sadly missed on a Wednesday, not only for his contribution to the sound of the band but for his ability to get to the bar first!! The Band gave

him a fitting send off at their local watering hole in San Miguel and presented him with an engraved hip flask and also a bouquet of flowers for his long suffering wife Carol. The Band has returned to rehearsing in 35 dergree heat, in preparation for the new season. Starting with a free concert in Torremendo on 9th September at 7pm, followed by their popular 'Last Night of the Proms' Concert on 8th October at 8pm in San Miguel, tickets available now. A large lavish concert, with guests, is planned for November, details to be confirmed. JB always welcomes new members and anyone wishing to play with the band or wanting details of events can contact our Secretary, Stuart through the web site JustBrass.org. RBL stalwarts call it a day The August meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion was a sad occasion for many as Branch stalwarts, Phillip and Janet Spear, announced that it would be the last such meeting that they would attend. The pair have been involved in their local branch for many years, both serving in a variety of committee positions, including treasurer, welfare and social, but unfortunately, as get-

ting around the area is becoming increasingly difficult for the popular couple, they have decided to rein in their public commitments. The photograph shows Branch Chairman Keith Carter thanking Phillip and Janet for their loyal and valuable service to the Branch over their many years of membership. Everyone agreed that they will be sadly missed.

Socialists call for playground improvements ..... but only in Orihuela The PSOE have called for a review of children’s playgrounds in the municipality, which they consider to be a priority of the government team in addressing some of the complaints made in recent weeks. They say that after the summer lethargy the Orihuela government must now focus it’s attention on the lack of maintenance of green areas across the which have increasingly become the focal point of complaints as thousands of children descended on the region with their parents during the summer months. Unfortunately the PSOE spokesman, Councillor Victor Ruiz, was only highlighting the districts and areas surrounding the city, el Raiguero, San Bartolomé, Hurchillo and Arneva, as well as the creation of new playgrounds in el Barrio de Los Huertos and el de San Isidro. He made no mention whatsoever of the Orihuela Costa showing that he is yet another politician who fails to acknowledge the importance of the coast. He calls on the PP government to address the city requirements with urgency despite the fact that the facilities in and around Orihuela and it’s outlying pedenias are far better than anything we have on the coast. In Aguamarina, stretching along the coast from Campoamor to Cabo Roig, which saw an influx of over 10,000 children during the holiday period, there is just one run down park that has been allowed to deteriorate to it’s present unacceptable state. For the children it contains just one child’s swing and one very tired slide. All of the other equipment has been broken and removed over a number of years with just the bare minimum of apparatus remaining.

The paths and kerbstones are worn and damaged, the rubber tiles are pitted and holed and despite the abundance of municipal teams maintaining council real estate in the city we rarely see any attention paid to the Aguamarina park, other than the infrequent emptying of overflowing bins. Many dog owners allow their pets to defecate in the park, with absolutely no regard for the health of the children who play in the area, which is not just a huge annoyance, but a serious health hazard, since rain can drive this fecal matter into our water supply and increase the spread of diseases. There are absolutely no warning signs cautioning dog owners and there is certainly no evidence whatsoever of any concern by the authorities. Are they really bothered we ask……such signage is plentiful in the city. Perhaps we could consider the introduction of a scheme similar to that implemented in Brunete, a small town outside Madrid, where the dog mess is first gathered up, then labeled “Lost Property,” following which a courier delivers it right back to the guilty pet owner, and where, since the campaign began, there has been a 70 percent reduction in abandoned dog waste. Not too shabby! But back to the PSOE Councillor mentioned earlier who is also calling for improvements to the Garcia Engineer Park sport courts in Orihuela where the basketball hoops and the football goals are in desperate need of repainting. NOW THAT REALLY IS A PRIORITY SNR RUIZ!

The only playgound between Campoamor and Cabo Roig has just one swing. The other was broken and is yet to be replaced

Foreign Pension Tax introduced for Retirees

W

hen Spain went into recession all those years ago one of the first measures introduced by the cash strapped government was a system of back taxation on the foreign pensions of its retirees.

now find themselves targeted by the tax office according to FAER.

Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards who had worked abroad suddenly found that their rather comfortable lifestyle was under attack.

However, according to budget ministry figures, around 145,000 retirees had settled their tax bill by the end of July, increasing state coffers by 309 million euros.

The legislation took 5 years to implement but since 2013 the country has tapped into a new vein; those back taxes on foreign pensions from hundreds of thousands of former expatriate Spaniards who returned home to live out their retirement.

Another such ‘victim’ is said Miguel Martinez, who worked as an car worker in Paris between 1964 and 1974 and receives a monthly pension of 330 euros from the French state.

With a General Election due before the end of the year though, Spanish retirees who worked abroad have now stepped up their protests against the government's bid.

He was shocked to receive a registered letter last year demanding the payment of back taxes on his French pension for the past five years of around 5,000 euros -- a sum equivalent to one third of his total annual income.

Eva Foncubierta, the president of the Spanish Federation of Returned Emigrants (FAER) said “ In some cases people have been given just 15 days to pay up, they have suffered great moral and economic harm, and they don't deserve to be treated this way." Foncubierta, whose parents emigrated from the southern Andalucia to the Netherlands are just two of almost 800,000 such people who

Martinez, who lives in the town of Callosa de Segura has since chained himself to three different tax offices in protest. "This is robbery and an injustice," he said. He says his anger is fuelled by the fact that he has a letter issued in 2011 by the tax authorities certifying that his French pension was not taxable. As protests now become more determined more and more Associations seem set up to defend their rights and in Galicia and Andalucia, two high-migration regions, there have already been noisy street protests with some success. The Spanish tax office has now agreed to stop imposing fines for late payments on back taxes and it has reimbursed the 20 million euros in fines that it has already collected. And as what promises to be an extremely close fought general election nears, the retirees are planning even more protest actions."We will take advantage of this election period to request special treatment," said Foncubierta. "The government just might be surprised."

The discovery was made in the area known as la zona conocida, a former Marine Corps Camp where the Navy carry out maneuvers. The bundles weighed approximately 2kg and are thought to have been lost and washed ashore from a passing boat. On discovering the drugs the finder took them into Torrevieja where he handed the consignment over the Guardia Civil.

FRENCH GUNMAN

Winston Churchill remarked after this decisive air battle “ The gratitude of every home in our Island, in the Empire and indeed throughout the World, goes out to the airmen, who undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of World war by their prowess and devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”. His words truly described a heroic episode that we should never forget. This special Church Service commences at 11 am and is open to anyone who wishes to remember those who gave their lives or were involved in this significant part of history that helped secure the freedoms many of us take for granted today.

Spanish baggage handlers to stage September walkouts

Ciudadanos spokesman Ignacio Lopez-Bas and Luisa Bone

The Workers' Commission Union which represents airport baggage handlers has announced details of four strikes which they plan on taking during September. The main action will take place at Madrid Airport starting on Friday where industrial action will take place on September 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 4:30am to 7:30am and 7:30pm to 9:30 pm. There will also be action at Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma airports with the Workers' Commission Union saying that easyJet and Vuelling passengers will be those most affected by the strikes. Union chiefs blamed the action on a decision by handling firm Menzies Aviation Iberica to postpone a collective bargaining agreement after ongoing negotiations.

CIUDADANOS CALL FOR FAIR DEAL FOR COAST The municipal group of Orihuela’s Ciudadanos party are introducing two proposalsat the next Plenary meeting which they say the ruling PP government team should act on with some urgency. Both relate to the interests of the Orihuela Costa and it’s residents. The first deals with public services, or perhaps more accurately, the lack of public services on the coast, which party spokesman Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas has asked to be audited prior to the drawing up of the new municipal budgets. The second relates to the macrobotellones, the informal gatherings where thousands of young people congregate to enjoy very loud music and all that goes alongside these events. Luisa Bone of Ciudadanos, recently met with the president of the Federation of the Orihuela Costa, Joaquín Capel, where residents worries were discussed. Bone said that the main concerns relate to the security, housekeeping, maintenance and repair of the public areas that

are used for such events. She said that she could not understand how legal permits were recently issued by the council authorities to hold two macrobotellones, each attracting between 7,000 and 10,000 young partygoers in an area where the facilities were so poor. She asked that a new site be identified, other than Campoamor, where a solution could be found for the proper provision of necessary services. Lopez-Bas meanwhile said that the Orihuela budget should be apportioned fairly so that it meets the needs of its coastal residents as well as thouse who reside in the city and the pedenias. If necessary the funding should be redistributed without the need to raise taxes. He said that there had been no significant improvement to the services provided to the Costa for many years.

SPAIN WITHDRAWAL The Spanish armed forces’ mission in Afghanistan is reaching its end nearly 14 years after it started. The 420 Spanish troops stationed in Herat, in the east of the country, are set to leave before October 31. Once their withdrawal is complete, the only remaining Spanish presence in Afghanistan will be the 20 officials based at NATO general headquarters in Kabul, who are set to stay until the end of the year. At its height, Spain had over 1,500 military personnel stationed in the country.

VOLKSWAGEN: Reaching for significant energy savings consumption. For each of the machining lines in the production a big tank with cooling lubricant and a pump system ensures that the machine tools work reliably and at consistent high quality. "When Volkswagen introduced the 'Think Blue. Factory.' concept, we started to search for ways to reduce energy in production. We knew that our pump systems in the production plant in Braunschweig were using a lot of energy, so we asked Grundfos to help us find savings," says electrical engineer at Volkswagen Eugen Treder. The ambitious goal for the whole Group is to reduce energy consumption by 25 per cent per vehicle and component produced by the end of 2018. "To reach this goal, we need dedicated partners who can help us with knowhow within specific areas. In the area of optimising pumps solutions, Grundfos is a valuable partner," he says. Control system was the key

The Volkswagen Group wants to cut energy consumption. The target is 25 per cent less by 2018. To help achieve this, a pump control system from Grundfos has been installed at the production plant in Braunschweig. The sun reflects in the Volkswagen logo on the roof of an old building. This is where the Volkswagen was born in 1938. Right here in Braunschweig, Germany. Today, axles, brake disks and shock absorbers are supplied to all the different car brands in the Volkswagen Group from here. Working on this scale makes the demand for energy high. Besides the power for running the machines, the need to cool lubricant makes a big impact on energy

After a pump audit from Grundfos, the case was clear. It was not the pumps themselves which held the biggest potential for energy savings. It was the control system which was the weak link. This meant that Grundfos iSolutions came in handy. The concept of optimising a pump system using an intelligent solution was well received at Volkswagen. In the adapted system, an MPC pump controller identifies changes in pressure and adjusts the pumps' external frequency converters according to the actual demand. This resulted in energy reductions of more than 25 per cent in a single machining line in production. "I think that the result is remarkable and I really like the fact that the software is intuitive and simple to manage. And because of the pressure sensor, the system adjusts the speed to the need, so if one of our lines in a particular area is not running, the pumps won't either," says Eugen Treder. Good investment Seeing the great result from iSolutions, Volkswagen in Braunschweig decided in 2014 to invest in three additional solutions. And two more will come in 2015. Grundfos Key Account Manager Heinz Maier explains that with iSolutions from Grundfos, energy savings of up to 40 per cent are possible - the result depends on the design of the system installed. "We have a strong partnership with Volks¬wagen based on openness and trust. This allows us to use our experience and knowledge in combination with the wide range of solutions that we can offer," he says. For the four systems already in use the return of investment is between one and two years. This fact makes Eugen Treder smile. "For us it is a good investment, and I hope that with the help of Grundfos we can do more projects like this in the future," he says. Facts • Volkswagen has implemented an intelligent solution from Grundfos • We call it Grundfos ISolutions - a way to optimise the way pumps, drives, controls and protection, measurement and communication units work together as part of one system. •

Volkswagen has installed several MPC pump controllers

With this solution energy savings of up to 40 per cent are possible

PAH Torrevieja demand action for socially excluded families

PAH Torrevieja, La Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca, is the association that protects and supports families who are in danger of being evicted from their properties. In Torrevieja last week, the group, supported by PAH Orihuela and Almoradi, handed their Emergency Plan to the mayor Jose Manuel Dolon. The document, essentially a ‘code of conduct’ insists on a number of basic human rights for those families who are currently under threat. It demands a right to adequate housing for all, a right to basic supplies for families, including

access to water and to electricity, emergency aid to be implemented immediately when required and a basic right to food, to breakfasts and to snacks. The document demands that all those families suffering from social exclusion be entitled to 3 basic meals a day including school breakfasts and lunches for anyone of school age. They ask that in Torrevieja their requirements are simply not filed in the major’s desk drawer but are put into effect as soon as possible.

The government has warned Aragon, Valencia, the Balearics and Cantabria that they face strong measures for passing laws that give undocumented migrants health cards and unlimited access to the public healthcare system. The Minister of Health said that the EU could impose “multi-million” fines on Spain if the regions continue to circumvent the government’s 2012 decree that places limits on healthcare access for those without residency papers. The consequences could be “catastrophic,” he said, warning that the government was prepared to take measures against those regions “infringing state powers.”

Fine overturned Officials have scrapped an 800euro fine against a woman for posting a picture on Facebook of an illegally-parked police car after admitting the image did not contravene a controversial security law. The offending picture, which was posted online last month, showed a police car parked in a disabled parking space in Alicante. The police said the officers were rushing to stop vandals in a nearby park, and quickly filed a complaint against the woman, citing controversial new legislation known as the citizens' security law, popularly known as the "gag law"

GOOGLE STREET CAR TOMATINOED All it wanted was to capture the aftermath of Spain's annual Tomatina festival, but in the end, the Google Street View car turned out to be a ripe target for tomato throwers when thousands of people hurl tomatoes at each other. The car reached the area before the hour-long food fight had finished, with dozens of youths clambering on top of it and pelting it with tomatoes, leaving it covered with red goo, online pictures show. The car's windows and mirrors as well as its cameras were damaged, Spanish media said, but Google said no-one had been injured.

Chirunguitos encourage beach clean-up

With the collaboration of the local town hall Chiringuitos Del Sol launched a social responsibility initiative recently where they encouraged users to help with the cleaning on local beaches. Using the motto "Beach Lovers" the company sought to raise awareness among beach users of the importance of protecting the ecosystem to keep the beaches in perfect condition. During the month of August collection points were set up on a number of different beaches where participants were able to take a glass full of cigarette butts and receive in return a free drink or free ice cream for helping clean the beaches. The intitiative will continue at Playa La Glea until 2 September. Thanks to the active collaboration of the users of the beaches, last weekend at Cala Bosque beach (La Zenia) and La Caleta Beach (Cabo Roig) saw over 800 containers full of cigarette ends collected. The campaign is accompanied by messages of environmental awareness to show that the beaches are one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change and that actions like burying a cigarette end in the sand, sea, or carelessly disposing of plastic containers or any residue, can cause irreparable damage with a single filter cigarette being enough to contaminate three liters of seawater since they are designed to absorb tar and chemicals such as lead and arsenic. When they come into contact with seawater these toxic substances are dissolved in the water, a risk, not only for the entire marine ecosystem but also for all bathers.

CAFFEINE BOOST FOR CYCLING According to researchers at the Universit of Alicante caffeine really does boost your cycling speed. It may not win you La Vuelta or The Tour de France but scientists at the university say that a cyclists tested by them taking a combination of caffeine and carbohydrate gel rode significantly better than others who had smaller doses or none at all. The big hit of caffeine gave them staying power. The scientists made their announcement following tests on 70 amateur cyclists where they gave the volunteers measured amounts of caffeine for every kilo of their body weight. The doses were taken 70 minutes before the experiment following which they each had to ride for an hour. The riders who were given significant amounts of caffeine were found to ride significantly longer than the rest. The result confirms a study published a year ago by scientists in Birmingham University where 0.5mg per kilo of body weight was enough caffeine to give riders an advantage in a 45 minute time trial. So, if you know your body weight, just multiply it roughly by 0.6 to see how much caffeine is going to help you an hour down the road. If you’re a lightweight, you’ll need about 35mg. Heavyweights may need up to 60mg. The trouble is, while caffeine drinks are often labelled with their caffeine quantites, coffee isn’t. It varies from brand to brand and even within the same chain of coffee shops.

Willshire success in two wood trips By Pat McEwan Not a lot of bowling going on during the very hot weather of August. The die hards carried on attending the roll up mornings, and sunday mornings were quite well attended. The Wednesday morning Two Wood Trips finished this week. A team of four, with any three playing each week. Going into the final game, there were three teams which could have won the competition. Fred Willshires team dropped a 6 on the second end, but came back fighting, and not only won the game but the competition as well. Well done to Fred Willshire, Chris Parsons, Sandy Hannan and Sue Milner. In second place were Mick Rogers, Carol Rudge, Peter Ross and Eileen MacLaren. Thanks to Noel

Davis for organising the competition. On Tuesday 1st September at 10am, Fred Willshire will be sharing his expertise on 'a review of the laws of the game of bowls' before the roll up starts This will be beneficial to all club members. There will be a Target Bowls morning on Saturday 5th September 10am. Come along and have some fun. Soup and sandwiches available afterwards. See Paul Thomas for further details. San Miguel Bowls Club will not only be hosting games in the Valencian Championships, but will be holding the semi finals, the finals and the closing ceremony on Saturday 3rd October.

The best guest on the day was Alan Manson with 32 points and he was also nearest the pin on Hole 7. The other NTPs were; hole 5 and 10 Marilyn Eckersall, Hole 14 Stan Low, and hole 17 Robin

In the Bunker with ‘Mick the Grip’ THE OLYMPIC COURSE. “It will be a Masterpiece,” says an excited IOC spokesman. Steady on. At least it’s green. The men’s Olympic golf (11-14th August) is playing havoc with the 2016 PGA summer schedules, with 8 tournaments in 8 weeks, including 3 Majors. The PGA Championship will be in July, the WGC Bridgestone, moved to June, will now clash with the French Open, a tough decision for the European Tour players needing Race to Dubai and Ryder Cup points. The Travellers Championship and John Deere Classic, moved to August, may be without their defending champions Bubba and Jordan, who, like Fred and Ginger, could be Flying Down to Rio. ROYAL LYTHAM & ST ANNES hosts the 45th Walker Cup on 12/13th September. 26 matches will be played, with two forms of match play, singles and foursomes. The GB& I amateurs were victorious at Royal Aberdeen in 2011, beating a brilliant USA team including Jordan Spieth (wonder what happened to him?) but they were trounced 17 to 9 at Long Island in 2013, in what was called the ‘Nightmare in New York.’ Captain Nigel Edwards says: “We lost in 2013 despite having an experienced team. This year they are untried for the most part but dead keen to get that trophy back.” The Walker trophy is named after the great grandfather of George W. Bush. Never mind, they still want it.

view, with the hole a bus ride away and a couple of yards off the fairway meant either deep rough or Lake Michigan. It’s the host course for the 2020 Ryder Cup, which should be fun, and is one of the few American Major courses people can actually play, providing they have steady nerves and $385. ONE OF THE FIRST players to recognize Jordan Spieth’s mental strength was Phil Mickelson. Spieth and Steve Stricker beat him in one of his beloved practice round money games in 2013 although Mickelson, who knows every trick in the book to rattle his opponents, tried them all on Spieth, who just smiled innocently at him. Mickelson ground his teeth, but afterwards suggested Spieth be included in the 2013 Presidents Cup. KINGS DON’T ALWAYS relinquish their crowns gracefully. In 1922 Walter Hagen, the ‘King of Gamesmanship’ won the Open, but was beaten in the U.S. Open and USPGA by 20 yr. old Gene Sarazen. There was no love lost between the two; Hagen thought Sarazen a young upstart, and Sarazen thought Hagen should treat him with more respect. When they played each other in a challenge match later that year Hagen tried to get under his opponent’s skin. Sarazen complained: “He kept calling me ‘Kid’ and I didn’t like it.” Sarazen had the last laugh, winning 3 and 2.

CALLAWAY’S NEW Great Big Bertha driver, unlike it’s 1990’s ancestor, incorporates 21st century design features. They include a sliding weight that can be positioned for varying degrees of draw, fade or neutral, and OptiFit hosel technology which gives eight loft and face angles. So why is it a greater Big Bertha? Well, if you accept the explanation, it is because it echoes the ground breaking nature of the original GBB. In that case I can't wait for the re-release of the Greatest Big Bertha.

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY is the latest buzzword. In one example, a small GPS tracker is fixed to the belt, with flat sensors placed on each club. The location of every shot is marked, and the golfers monitor their performance with a glance at their smartphones. As used in practice by Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, and even President Obama, all of whom could use a little help at the moment, but maybe not from Wearable Technology. Still, it’s reassuring the most powerful man in the world has some idea where his shots are going.

Ryan joins list of Hub sponsors

Jimmy Ryan, Simon Williams´ father in law, joined the growing list of Hub sponsors when he decided to support the Hub´s latest foray to the San Javier course of Roda. Ryan a useful 16 handicapper who runs a very successful furniture business back in the Emerald Isle, needed little persuasion over a Jamesons or two with son in law Williams, to join PJ´s Rentacar and Photo Lounge for the Roda event. Ryan himself played and returned a creditable 27 points and joint 10th place. Not once this season have the Hub members bettered their handicap score in the Grand Prix, surprisingly 3 players achieved the feat, remarkable considering the Handicap Committee´s heavy handed approach to cutting players receiving prizes. Phil de Lacy must have thought he would receive 15 points for his efforts scoring a tasty 38 points, but his excellent score was beaten twice by 2 points, Graham Jackson and Andy Shaw recording 40 points apiece. Ben Chadwick, playing off 6 couldn’t quite make the podium with 37 points, but 12 points for fourth place in the Grand Prix moves him up several spots. Consolation for Chadwick was a share of the 2´s pot with a birdie on

the 172 yd, 13th Par 3. His 12 pars and birdie being the best of the day, eclipsing de Lacy´s 11 pars. Cheryl McGlynn won her first ever prize after playing for just 12 months with a nearest the pin on the Par 3, 11th. The Hub´s next two events are already well subscribed, therefore anyone wishing to play La Finca on the 3rd September or Las Colinas on the 13th September should register at the Hub (Villamartin) asap. Harris takes gold as minor places decided on countback 18 society members travelled down the motorway to Lo Romero in August to challenge this difficult course and try to beat the 18th signature island green and as is normal for this course it's condition was excellent After the match all players returned to the Bull Flanagan Bar / Restaurant in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation where members and guests were able take the opportunity to sample a refreshing drink before having a choice of a sponsored free lunch provided by Chris Stott of the Bull Flanagan. Good day for Sandra who finally sees return on investment 33 members and guests descended onto this Championship course that we found to be in great condition for this time of year, receptive and slick greens meant that your putting stroke needed to be at its best. Every week our members are invited to take part in a “2’s” pot, this week Sandra Twentyman reluctantly gave over her €1 saying that she is just a sponsor and never wins anything. Well Sandra it just goes to show that you must be in it to win it!! Congratulations on making the ONLY 2 of the day, returning you €29 on your investment, no more winging heh! While on the subject of our Sandra, you may recall the on-going battle between her and Norwegian member Roger Nilsen, it’s been a little quite on that front lately, probably because Roger has had the upper hand, well she let everyone know today that she had scored more points than him, I wonder, is it possible that the raping and pillaging by the Viking Members in recent weeks might have found their match? Watch this space for future updates. In the Silver category, Sandra managed a very good 34 points to take 3rd place on higher handicap from “cuddly from Dudley” Alan Rickers, these two

were sandwiched between Swedish member Lennart Holmberg in 4th place on 33 points and out in 1st place with the best score of the day (40 points) was another member of the Viking fraternity, Per Skarnes. In our Gold category the scores were very similar with Dag Lovas taking 4th place on 31 points, nice to see newcomer, Paul Aston in the prizes taking 3rd place with higher handicap from Arne Hansson both on 33 points. After reading our recent reports about the raiding of the Viking pirates, Irish member, Chris Gray, decided to return to Spain a little earlier to see if he could help balance the battle, you wouldn’t normally expect a spritely 72 year old wanting to take part in such battles, but Chris’s experience proved to be just what was needed and his 38 points put our British members hearts at rest. Nice to see you back Chris. The N.T.P. competition this week; Hole 6 Chris Gray, Hole 9 Alan Rickers, Hole 13 Chris Gray, Hole 17 Gary Gates. In the visitor’s category, Mr S. Williams came out on top with 27 points. Next up is Campoamor on 2 September, so if you fancy taking part in our friendly rivalry competitions, visit our website www.tmgs.org you

Terry (Top Cat) Cullen takes Wednesday Singles Monday the 24th August saw our lowest team turnout of the 2015 season with only 10 players registering for the Waltzer 1 2 3. This 4 member team event records the best score on hole 1, the best 2 on hole 2 and the best 3 on hole 3 - repeating over the balance of the course in the same format. With only 10 members on the day we had to invite "Albert" to join 2 of the teams to make up the numbers. Today "Albert" was given 30 points with a spread of 1,3,2 - 2,1,1 - 1,1,3 and 3,2,2 - 1,0,1 - 3,1,2. We vary "Alberts" contribution from a selection of 5 cards between 28 and 32 points with the pattern of hole scoring differing on each card - in the past he always used to be a boring 30 points a round (indexes 1-12 2 points per hole, indexes 13-18 1 point per hole = he never had a birdie or a double bogey). We changed that last year to spice things up a bit. Any way on the day 80 points won first prize for team Geoff Biggerstaff (H/C 21), Rod Doel (22), Nick Campbell (11) and Tom Hardie (11) but this was only after a back 9 count back against Ron Phipps (6), Brian Townend (10), Marleen Billen (22) and that always relaible "Albert". Wednesday's Singles Stableford was contested by 17 members. With numbers this low we only stage ONE category for the prizes - going down to 4th place. Marleen Billen took the 4th slot with 36 points, winning on a count back over the last 6 against 3 other 36's. In 3rd place was the ever dependable Olga Douglas who also carded 36 points but beat Marleen by virtue of a better back 9. In second position was John (cannee get a word in) Collins with a solid 37 points but the run away victor on the day was Terry (Top Cat) Cullen who received a handicap reduction of 3 shots for his magnificent 42 points. Terry had consecutive birdies on holes 5 and 6 to grab 8 points in two holes and also join the two's club with his birdie on hole 6. Also sharing the 2's pot was Brian Dent and Rod Doel. The team competition on Friday was a Stableford best 2 of 4 with all to count on the par 3's. This must go down as the "What-if" Friday because what-if every one had turned out, what-if Alan didn't 4 putt. What-if all 4 on the green at the 10th could putt (all within 15 feet), they didn't get a birdie that would have won the day but instead had two team members 3 putt. What-if Pete didn't go in the baranca on the 12th (an all counting par 3 hole), what-if Ken Robertson had missed that birdie putt on the 14th. I am sure there were many more "whatifs" on the day but the reason this is so pertinent is that the winning score for team Rod Doel, Ken Robertson, Elizabeth Robertson and Peter Dunn of 99 points shaded out team Ron Phipps, Bryan Neal, Alan and Olga Douglas by the one point and second place's 98 points pipped team Geoff Biggerstaff, Tom Hardie, Brian Dent and John Collins who carded 97. What-if indeed. Bryan K. Neal

President’s Trophy success for Brookes A small turn out again at El Valle on Thursday for the Fourth Presidents Trophy. I think it will be the lull before the storm as many members are on their way back and booking for the future. Good reports back for the condition of El Valle, again did not fail us. Again very hot day with not much wind to help us. Looks like Nick Brooks is not letting anybody near the Presidents Trophy after winning it for the last Three years, he won this round of the trophy with 37 pt's. We played full handicap stableford, Two ntp's and usual two's pot. Results were pins. No 6 Chris Blown, No12 Tom Bridges. The Two's pot was won by Chris Blown, Nigel Cawthra won the raffle. Thanks to James who sponsored the raffle, also thanks to his staff at Gogarty's for their great hospitality. POWELL STORMS TO GOLD AT LA SERENA IN CELTS AUGUST OPEN

Our August Open Day was celebrated at La Serena last Saturday. The course is in excellent condition and credit must go to Wayne the course manager and the hard working course management team. We had an early start in an effort to miss the extreme heat of the later part of the day and conditions were ideal for golf with glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze taking the edge of the high temperature. As always the marshals and clubhouse staff of, Paul, John and the two new members, Diana and Jean looked after all our needs and we were set for a great day of golf. We also made use of the option for the clubhouse to prepare all the cards for the day and this proved to be very efficient and made the day simpler for our starters. Likewise as players finished their round they delivered the cards to the golf shop and the results were generated in minutes, the way forward. Down to the results of the day and similar to the hot weather, scoring too was again very high with nine players scoring 36 points or more. NTP's Sally Hopkins, Jane Knight, Alisdair McLean, Richard Sanders, Denis McCormack and Andy Currie. Our visitor’s prizes went to Geltruda Holmes with 37 and Richard Sanders on 28. Category 2, winner was Roy Sutherland 39, second Julian Lopez with 36 and third John Lawrence with 34. Category 1, winner Liam Powell 40, second John O'Brien with 37 and third Logan Nayager 36. The gross prize was won by Denis McCormack with 33 points. Runner-up overall, Sally Hopkins with, yes you are reading correctly 45. Hard luck Sal this would normally run away with any tournament. And the winner on the day to complete a ladies clean sweep was Chris Fyffe with the fabulous score of 47 points. All players had their handicaps adjusted at the time of the presentation, with 5.1 cut for Sally and 6.3

for Chris. We also presented the monthly crystal winners, these competitions seem to be very popular if the scoring is anything to go by. Week one winner Alan Woods with 38 and runner-up Steven Hopkins also with 38. Week two winner, Jane Knight with 43 and the runner-up Sue Benning with 42. Our Silver Medal winners were Category 1 Jim Hayes with 64 and Category 11, Mike Sephton with a 62. Fantastic scoring during the month, congratulations one and all. Our next events include the fifth round of the International League at Alenda Golf kindly funded by the Federation in Valencia. The league is proving to be very keenly contested with two points separating the first four teams. This year there are ten teams competing for the title and with the increasing interest we are looking at expanding the league further with the creation of a second division. The federation have provided a subsidy for all players taking part in the tournament with all green fees costing 22 euro per course. We would like to thank the federation in Valencia for this generous sponsorship. Are you aware to maintain your handicap here in Spain you must play in 4 federated games per year? The federation are preparing a promotional day for societies in the near future where, golf and lunch will be provided and a short presentation will be made advocating the benefits of federation membership. We always welcome new members and guests and if you would like to play in one of our Open Days why not give me a call? For further details on membership and tournaments contact 615 466 398 or e-mail johnobrienalicantemail.com.

Last gasp rescue for Torry C

ould Torry bounce back from the mauling they suffered in their opening division 3 fixture last Sunday at Ontinyent? Should wholesale changes be made, partuicularly in areas which were sadly lacking on the day? These questions (and more) were foremost in the minds of their expectant fans, officials and especially manager Pedreño, as they hosted the division’s new boys Borriol, who last week drew 0-0 at home to Novelda. Based in Castellon, the far north of Valencia province, the visitors only got promoted from the Preferente division by default. Having lost in the play offs, they could not have expected to receive a reprieve following the resignation of Cullera due to financial reasons, requiring hasty amendments to their budget in terms of the players available. However, judging from that early performance, against a team that is always in the promotion mix, last season’s Preferente manager of the year, Pedro Fernandez Cuesta, does appear to have put together a sufficiently strong squad. International golfer Sergio Garcia is their President, and 2

seasons ago he came on as a late substitute at Vicente Garcia stadium, although nowadays, having decided to hang up his boots, he is more content to cheer the lads on from the posh seats. In the game itself, any thoughts we might have had about Torrevieja dominating the newcomers were quickly put to bed

CD Torrevieja ...2 CF Borriol .........2

as the visitors put their hosts under pressure. For the first ten minutes the home side barely got out of their half and even at this early stage of the season there was a very worried look on the manager’s face. Borriol could have gone in front as early as the 2nd minute of the game when a sloppy backpass from Quintero was nearly the undoing of Oscar. Fortunately Torrevieja’s saviour on all too many occasions was alert to the

pass and managed to scramble the ball away for a corner. Juli was the next to go close for the visitors on 8 minutes when his shot just failed to dip and sail harmlessly over the bar and from the restart we had Torry’s very first attack of the game with Juanfran’s low shot sailing just wide. The game then evened out for a period with Torrevieja picking up the pace but despite coming more into the game they still found themselves behind midway through the half from Victor Pino’s low dipping shot. The power was too much for Oscar who’s fingertips just weren’t strong enough to turn the ball away. Juanma, a recent signing from Hercules, went close on the half hour before Oscar was again called into action, saving once more from the lively Juli, the last meaningful action of the half which Borriol led 1-0 going into the interval. The dismissal of Borriol Keeper Quique shortly after the restart for bringing down Juanfran on the edge of the box should really have spurred Torry into action but even with ten men the visitors easily contained their hosts

during the 2nd period. Indeed they continued to look the better side and were duly rewarded by extending their lead on the 72nd minute. A counter attack saw Colomer pick out Victor on the spot, who’s accurate header was enough to secure the points for the visitors. And until we moved into injury time they looked good for their two goal win but a 92nd minute drive from Brani followed by a 96th minute equaliser from Quintero really did get the home side out of jail. This is clearly not good enough for the Torrevejense who, after a decent pre season, have looked anything but a team that is destined for promotion. Indeed in this sort of form manager Pedreño could soon be renewing his relationship with Preferente although the last five minutes at the Vicente Garcia on Sunday could be enough to turn it all around. Next up for Torrevieja, this coming Saturday evening with the game kicking off at 7pm in Saguntino. Referee: Pablo Pérez Alcocer

Greens Maintenance – The Necessary Evil We just entering that period of the year when the courses hollow tine the greens causing a disruption to golf and producing a poor putting surface for a few weeks but just why do they have to do this to us? The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone. A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality. Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings. The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week. The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days. There you have it…so when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand the just a little more We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.
