Little Governmental sympathy for latest Costa Demo
There seems to be little sympathy from the government once again for the latest in a multitude of protests organised on the Orihuela Costa in support of better services and funding for it’s residents. On this occasion it was led by the Parents Association of the
IES PLAYA FLAMENCA, who are asking for nothing more than the safety of their children as they enter and leave the school. Currently they are forced to do so along a road that has seen absolutely no maintenance in years. It is filled with craters and potholes, there are no kerbs to the road as it drops
off quite alarmingly at the edges and in the few short minutes that I watched protestors at the school entrance it was quite scary to see drivers of motorcycles, cars, coaches and other heavy vehicles winding their way along the road, zigzagging around the holes in order to avoid the many ruts and depressions.
As they did so during the mass exodos from the Institute on Friday afternoon, pedestrians on the side of the road, both young and some quite old, were having to step back, often quite sharply, in order to avoid confrontation with the oncoming transport. Continued on Page 2

The holes and potholes in the road leading to the school have already caused serious damage to several vehicles, as well as a number of accidents. "A bus forced me into a huge hole and I scraped the side of the bridge rail. If someone been walking I would have killed him, this is not acceptable", said Román, one of the protesters. Another said that only last week he had been forced to replace a tyre after his car hit one of the holes causing the rubber to split and although he denounced the town hall for the damage he has absolutely no hope whatsoever of reclaiming any of the cost. Of course they are just a couple of many as governmental action continues to be totally insufficient in meeting the needs of the Orihuela Costa, with many roads suffering such a level of deterioration that they have long posed a risk to road safety and to the safety of the general public, as well as presenting a very negative image to the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come into the area every year. The president of the Ampa explained that "5 buses and 500 families drop off children every morning during which time the cars have to
leave the road so that the coaches can pass. It is also extremely dangerous for those on foot as there is no pavement, and at 2pm, with children leaving the school en masse, the road is filled with vehicles travelling in all directions, as witnessed on Friday by THE LEADER NEWSPAPER. "We ask that the road be properly repaired and if it is a private plot the council must expropriate it, but do not continue applying patches which seems to be the only thing that the City Council does", said Yolanda Fernández. Over two years ago the FAOC submitted a list of priority actions required to be carried out as a matter of absolute urgency, one of which was the access to the Playa Flamenca Secondary School and the bridge over the AP7 (zone 4). Two years on not a single metre of road has been improved.

A mountain of salt to open 2019 Vuelta The Vuelta Ciclista a España 2019 will get underway in Torrevieja on Saturday, August 24th, from the singular and extraordinary surroundings of Las Salinas de Torrevieja. But the 18 km time trial that traditionally marks the start of the 3 week test of endurance will have no ordinary beginning as riders will pedal off from the top of a mountain of salt. The announcement was made by the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, together with the general director of the Tour of Spain, Javier Guillén, and the provincial deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolón. The mayor said that "the departure of the Vuelta from Las Salinas is an opportunity for the townsfolk to project internationally exactly what Torrevieja represents at the environmental level". The director of the race, Javier Guillén, said "it is a global event that reaches more than 400 million spectators", so the projection offered by the city of Torrevieja is very important.
Guillén also announced details of 'La Vuelta Junior', an event in which seven Torrevieja schools of will be involved. Thus, during the months of April and May and with the participation of the association of professional cyclists, there will be a series of both theoretical and practical classes provided by the world of cycling on topics such as road safety and respect for the environment. From these seven schools, 100 boys and girls will be chosen to participate in the last kilometre of the first leg of La Vuelta on the opening day, August 24, and in this way, experience what it is like to be a professional cyclists for a day.

‘Winter Beach’ coming to the Orihuela Costa Winter Beach activities that will take place every weekend, throughout the months of spring, will get underway this coming Sunday 9th June with a jumping masterclass, trampoline instruction that will take place at La Caleta beach in Cabo Roig. The announcement was made by the Councillor for Beaches, Luisa Boné, as she unveiled many of the activities that will be held on the coast. La Caleta beach in Cabo Roig has been selected as the major venue because, according to Boné meets many of the requirements including a sheltered bay, with calm waters, family friendly and it has the services of a chiringuito that is open throughout the year. The councillor said that “the two previous editions of the Winter Beach were very well received so in 2019 we hope to strengthen the activities and increase the number of participants." She said that it was launched because of the neighbourhood demand that had been requesting the introduction of sports and leisure activities throughout the year at La Caleta beach.
There will be aerobic activities such as yoga, body balance, aerobics, aquagym, Zumba as well as workshops and games for children that will also have the purpose of raising awareness and education in the conservation, respect and protection of the environment. Second runway planned for Alicante-Elche Airport
The Ministry of Development has unveiled an environmental assessment project to expand the Alicante-Elche airport with the construction of a second runway, 3,000 meters in length, that will run parallel to the existing landing strip, and which will allow 112,240 aircraft movements per year (landings and take-offs). The new runway is planned for the year 2035, by which time the airport will be serving a total of 17 million passengers per year. Aena's calculations seem, however, rather conservative , because in the document the traffic forecasts for the year 2021 estimate a figure of 12.5 million passengers a year, a figure that was exceeded in 2018 when the airport handled 13.9 million passengers. The construction of the second runway is considered necessary both for the planned traffic and to provide competition for Madrid-Barajas, Almería, Granada, Málaga, València, Murcia, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca. The land that will likely be occupied covers 290 hectares (three million square meters), most of it in the municipality of Elche with an overspill in Alicante. However one section will occupy an important part of the Saladar de Agua Amarga, which has
raised objections from the Ecological Colla d`Alacant, conservation organization from which the Ministry has requested an opinion. "It seems like a savagery and we will vote against it. It invades the salt marsh as well as crossing over the N-332 road. We do not see any sense in it and we hope that Environment will think again ", says Carlos Arribas, spokesman for the Colla Ecologista who has doubts that the forecasted growth will be anything so spectacular despite the fact that the traffic has already increased from about six million commercial passengers in 2000 to almost 14 million in 2018, from 49,173 commercial operations in 2000 to 97,000 in 2018. The airport was 50 years old in May 2017, and is now consolidated as the fifth largest in Spain and 14th in Europe employing 6,000 people who are working directly inside the terminal. Since the first landing of a plane from Madrid on May 4, 1967, the airport has undergone two major transformations and is now one of the most modern terminals in Spain with capacity to move 20 million passengers a year but with one major issue, the lack of rail connections with Elche, Alicante and Benidorm, a city that attracts 50% of the passengers who arrive at the airport.
Franco to be moved from Valley of the Fallen
One of the first government measures approved by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, shortly after he came to power, the exhumation of the body of the former Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, has now been approved by the Government. However the move could still be blocked following a request by Franco’s family to suspend the exhumation. Many of his relatives strongly oppose the move and are filing legal challenges to either delay the exhumation or to stop it all together. Should the disinterment go ahead it will take place on 10 June when the body will be moved to the state owned El Pardo cemetery during a private family service. Attempts to move the late dictator from a site that is a major tourist destination have become a tug-ofwar between the government and the Franco family but with the family running out of options it looks as though the most recent government decision is now likely to be carried out.

Orihuela Deputy Mayor, López-Bas, nominated for Congress Orihuela’s Deputy Mayor, and leader of Ciudadanos, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, will be his party’s number two on the Alicante list for the Spanish Parliament, the Congress of Deputies, in the General Elections, to be held on 28 April. López-Bas reinforces the Citizens list which is headed by the current deputy Marta Martin. The number three will be Pepe Cano, a current deputy, who drops from number two. López Bas (Orihuela, 1969) joined the Orihuela council in 2011 as a member of the CLR-Claro party. In the municipal elections of 2015, he had moved across to Ciudadanos, the party that has now now nominated him in 2nd place for the Congress of Deputies. Having obtained a Law degree from the University of Murcia, he was practicing lawyer with his own office since 1994. Currently, however, López-Bas makes up one-third of the Ciudadanos team in Orihuela, along with the other two councillors Luisa Boné and Mar Ezcurra. Alicante’s list to the Congress will combine more political experience with the ex-councillor of Alicante and former member of the PP, Adrián Santos, who is number four. Santos is currently part of the local Cs management in the capital. At the last General Election, Ciudadanos won two seats in the province, Marta Martín and Pepe Cano, the same as the PSOE, while the coalition between Podemos and Compromis achieved three seats. The PP, meanwhile, managed five deputies.

DECADE OF RATE MISERY Savers who stashed their money with major banks have lost as much as a fifth of it in real terms over the past decade. Money Mail research shows low interest rates and the rise in the cost of living since the 2008 financial crash have reduced the value of each ÂŁ10,000 to ÂŁ8,000. It is nearly a decade since rates plummeted to their then-historic 0.5 per cent low, as the Bank of England grappled with the immediate fall-out of the financial crisis.

Hondón Valley Branch Legion commemorates “World Forest Day”
At the March meeting of the Hondón Valley Branch, members heard from the President, Lt Col Pete Lodge MBE, on a variety of recent events involving Armed Forces personnel and veterans. He paid tribute to the Forces Wives Challenge raising money for The RBL. The ladies have been in Chile and after undergoing 10 days altitude acclimatisation training, they climbed Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano in the world at 6893 metres above sea level, to raise awareness of loneliness and isolation. He praised their courage and determination. Members also heard from Peter Broadbent, a previous Branch President, whose humorous reminiscences revolved around the magazine Campo he started in 2001. One item that caused much mirth was the following “Beverley, the 6 year old daughter of friends, was asked where her grandparents lived. She replied ‘They live at the airport. When we want them, we pick them up. When we’ve finished with them we take them back to the airport.’ “

However, the proceeds from the collection are always split between the charity and the parade itself, which annually costs approximately 20,000 euro, and the bulk of which is raised by local businesses, so when organiser Maria called in to Golf Sun she was able to hand over 600 euro to the President of the Parade Committee, Ray Kearney.
Hopefully after a few more fun or should we say practise days, they are hoping to play a few friendly games against other petanca teams in the area, and possibly meet up and play against other legion branches.
Ray thanked Maria for her efforts, stating that the contribution will help to offset the cost of next year’s 10th Anniversary Parade, which already promises to be bigger and better than ever.
If anyone is interested in playing either petanca or joining our excellent bowls team, ‘The Legionnaires,’ we would love you to come along. You don’t have to be ex forces to play or to join.
However with police now estimating last week’s crowds at over 20,000 the organisers are already wondering quite how they will be able to exceed last week’s magnificent event.

The tender documentation is due to be completed on March 27, and the work will be carried out over a period of 39 months, extending also to the other two municipal boundaries and covering a distance of 13 kilometres. The Councillor for the Environment in Guardamar, Silvestre García, said that the project includes the planting of 95,473 specimens of 34 different specimens under the cover of pines, which are more resistant to drought and adaptable to the sandy soils of the dunes.
Orihuela Plenary welcomes delegation for Emergency Centre
The action also includes the removal of dead or declining pines to stop the development of forest pests and prevent sick trees from being the retreat of pests, and thereby being one more cause of deterioration of the pine forest that make up the lungs of Guardamar. One other measure of the environmental project will be the removal of 33 species of invasive alien plants that "interfere with the structure and development of indigenous plant communities," said the councillor.
At an extraordinary session of the Plenary, the Orihuela Council unanimously approved the delegation of powers from the Generalitat Valenciana for implementation of the works for construction of the La Zenia Emergency Centre. The mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, welcomed the measure saying that "finally we will be able tobuild the centre despite the lack of commitment and management on the part of the autonomic government." The building will house the different bodies and forces of State Security: Local Police, Civil Guard, Civil Protection, Immigration and Fire. The campaign, which is entitled "Correct use of the toilet" aims to raise awareness about the importance of what we can put down the toilet and the significance that these discharges have. For 10 days a traveling exhibition, consisting of two environmental experts, will visit different schools in Orihuela, the districts and Orihuela Costa, to raise awareness among children and youths about the correct use of the toilet and the necessity of avoiding the discharge of wipes, tampons, nappies, oil, etc. The exhibitors will be housed in a tent which will display information panels and samples of the items that are collected in the sewers from the discharges of home toilets,. The Councillor for Infrastructure, Juan Ignacio López-Bas said "the purpose of this campaign is so that schoolchildren know first-hand, of the problems and the contamination generated by such waste when improperly thrown into the toilet ".

Game ends with 2 girls making gruesome find
"Nothing compensates having to leave your home” says resident Miguel Sánchez
Guardia taking the girls home A children's game ended on Sunday afternoon with macabre find when they came across the body of a man in the basement of the abandoned Lagomar Hotel building in La Manga del Mar Menor, According to a team of officers from San Javier’s Local Police force who were first to attend the scene the victim had suffered a heavy blow to the head. The body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy to help determine the circumstances of the death. The Local Police notified the Guardia Civil who have now taken precedence over the case. A spokesman said the initial hypothesis is that the man could have died as a result of an accidental fall after hitting his head.
Hacienda to return IVA charges to Roda Golf
It seems that the 1,500 property owners in the urbanisation Roda Golf & Beach Resort have been paying more than required in community charges for the maintenance of the site, after the Tax Agency Hacienda incorrectly charged them VAT. A ruling made by the Superior Court of Justice has ruled that taxes are not applicable on the cost of maintaining municipally owned public goods, such as the maintenance of gardens, lighting, security, waste collection, pest control and bus services. According to the lawyer Isaac Abad, of the Abad Asociados office, the judgement, a first in Spain, now requires the Treasury to return the 100,650.51 euros to the owners for the overpayment of VAT over the last four years. The case was first in 2013, so the urbanisation filed the claim with the courts, which have now recognised the right of the owners of Roda Golf to recover part of what they overpaid. The ruling may not be appealed.
Compensation for 13 San Pedro families living by Tarmac Factory The Supreme Court has ordered the Town Hall in San Pedro to pay 400,000 euros to 13 families who have been affected by odours emanating from the plant which is sited adjacent to their homes. Resident Miguel Sánchez told the courts "My son was suffocating from the chemicals, especially at nights, and we had to go to the ER every two days until we eventually left San Pedro." Miguel and Elisa had purchased a new property with their savings but they had to return the key and move to the neighbouring municipality of Pilar de la Horadada so that their children could breathe without attacks of nausea and choking. The situation has been around for over 16 years, during which time there have been countless street demonstrations, judicial appeals and confrontations with at least three mayors, all of whom have supported the factory owner, a prominent member of the local Partido Popular Party. The initial court ruling, which found in favour of complainants Miguel and Elisa, was made in 2010 at which time the Superior Court of Justice ordered the Town Hall to compensate the family, but the payments were suspended, so that the council accumulated a debt with the couple of more than 30,000 euros. But now the courts have said that the local government will have to add a further 400,000 euros to the bill which they owe to 12 other complainant families, who subsequently followed Miguel and Elisa. Despite the fact that the Council appealed the verdict, the Court
of Cartagena came down in favour of the families, a ruling that was later ratified by the Supreme Court and then the Contentious Administrative Judge of Cartagena, who said that "the existence of odours was proven,” adding that they thought that “the consistory was completely insensitive to the welfare of the residents.” In the meantime the City Council has reached an agreement with the plaintiffs for the payment of the outstanding debt, which will now be paid to the families in six instalments, however if the payments are not maintained the sum will accrue interest at a rate of 6,500 euros a month until everything is paid. Those families affected, however, feel that the judgment doesn’t go as far as it should, particularly after so many years of "spending thousands of euros on analysis, studies, experts and technical reports of all kinds," says Mariano Villaescusa, another of the litigants who lived about 500 metres from the main chimney of the factory. “When the Levante wind blows there is a very bad taste, some anguish, a dry mouth and stomach disorders," says the resident. His wife, Toñi, says that they have been waiting for years to sell the house "because it is painful to have to fight against your town hall who just dont listen to us.” “There are about another 30 residents in Las Lomas - but they have not reported the problems out of fear,” she added. The residents are particularly critical of the councillor for the Environment, Pedro Sanchez, who said in the Plenary last January that the protests were only made because the complai-
nants had an economic interest. "Nothing compensates having to leave your home, the payment of private doctors, reports of companies specialising in odours, lawyers and time spent," responds Miguel Sánchez. "I do not think we'll ever go back to our house even if the smells disappear. It brings us very bad memories, "he says.

‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Whistle While We Work I am often asked which of the eight inhabited Canary Islands I like best of all. I can never answer the question, because each island is different and beautiful in its own unique way. I make a point of visiting each of the islands over the year. I love them all; each have their own unique character, culture and traditions. Let me give just one example. One of the smallest Canary Islands is La Gomera, which is currently much favoured by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. No doubt, she, like so many others, relish the peace and tranquillity of this island paradise. One of the elements of La Gomera is that it retains its own unique language, a whistled language called ‘Silbo Gomero’ (The Gomera Whistle). ‘Silbo Gomero’ is not a pointless academic exercise that the teaching of Latin is often accused of, but a true form of communication that is often used today. I recall hearing it in practical use during one of my many visits to the island. My hotel was next to a construction site, and builders were using this whistled form of communication to request additional materials, help and to give directions during the construction of a property. Its piercing shrill was unlike anything that I had heard before and I was impressed with the ease and fluency with which it was used. La Gomera’s ancient whistling language was used by farmers and
shepherds to communicate across La Gomera’s many large ravines.

In 1999, Silbo Gomero began to be taught in schools once again in an effort to revitalise the language.
It is a language that consists of just two vowels and four consonants, yet the whistler is able to articulate words and phrases in Spanish or any other language. Many believe that the language was first used by the Guanche inhabitants well before the conquest of the islands by Spain in the Fifteenth Century. Linguists regard the language with considerable interest, and some experts claim that it should be taught in general linguistics courses, because it demonstrates practically how a natural language is formed and organised. Although ‘Silbo Gomero’ now has the status of being a UNESCO recognised form of communication, it was seriously in danger of dying out completely in the 1990s simply because children at school were told not to use the language, because “it made them sound like peasants.” In 1999, it began to be taught in schools once again in an effort to revitalise the language. This approach has been very successful and the regional Government is now considering offering courses on the language that will be taught by qualified teachers across all the islands. Since its introduction into the education system twenty years ago, the status of the language has greatly improved. In La Gomera, it is currently taught for 30 minutes each week in primary schools, as well as the first two years of middle schools.
The possibility of courses in the language being extended across all the Canary Islands is currently being considered. Whatever the decision, it is important to maintain and extend the use and understanding of ‘Silbo Gomero’ for cultural, as well as linguistic reasons. As with any language, the approach should be to learn to love the language and not to impose it. Rocket Ronnie still potting balls - not plants By Andrew Atkinson Ronnie O'Sullivan is still potting balls on snooker's green baize over a decade after telling me he'd rather be potting plants than snooker balls. O'Sullivan, who played Neil Robertson in the final of the Tour Championship, in Llandudno at the weekend, was talking about potting plants during a moment of uncertainty about his future during the UK Championship at Preston Guild Hall almost two decades ago. I was reporting for the Mail on Sunday, a story billed as an exclusive. O'Sullivan, 43, who beat Judd Trump 10-9 in the Tour

semi-final will become the oldest world number one since Ray Reardon in 1983 if he takes the title. O'Sullivan who last led the world rankings in 2010, who has threatened to quit many times, will meet Neil Robertson or Mark Allen in the final which starts on Saturday in Wales. "I'm knocking on and I'm not sure there's going to be too many of them. There's very few people that have been the best in the world and the greatest at what they've done, so I feel like I'm in that bracket," said O'Sullivan. "Maybe there's eight billion people on this planet. How many can say they are the greatest at what they've done?
TIGER ON A ROLL The Lincoln 2019
"For me, I've had the ultimate experience of being the king of my sport and I'm still fighting and still punching and I'm proud of that in many ways," said O'Sullivan.
Tiger Roll has been clipped in betting to 11-2 to retain his Aintree Grand National crown on April 6 in a bid to repeat winning the race in 2018.
O'Sullivan holds the record for the most victories, 19, in the Triple Crown tournaments being the Masters, UK Championship and World Championship.
"Tiger Roll is a horse of a lifetime. It looks like he's a different horse this year, than he was last year," said trainer Gordon Elliott.
O'Sullivan, one victory away from equalling Stephen Hendry's record of 36 ranking titles, said: I'm just not driven by records. "I don't buy into that sort of stuff as you take the beauty out of the game and it all becomes about statistics."
Tiger Roll - tipped by The Leader - won for the fourth time at the Cheltenham Festival, romping home by 22 lengths. Tiger Roll impressed over hurdles at Navan, Ireland, ahead of an eye opening victory at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival. "He's come out of Cheltenham very well - the plan now is to go for the National," said Elliott.
In the pending years since the 'plants' quote everything has come up roses for Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Rathvinden (14-1) chased home Al Boum Photo - winner of the 2019 Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup - earlier this year and is worthy of each way support in the Aintree Grand National.
"It's just for the experiences, the love and the highs that I've had from playing this game since I was a kid. You can't buy that," said O'Sullivan.
Rathvinden, 11-years-old, stayed on strongly when finishing fourth in the Grade One Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown, and won the 2018 National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham.
AUXERRE CHARLIE'S DARLING The 2019 Flat season big race opener sees the Charlie Appleby trained Auxerre ridden by Adam Kirby well supported in The Unibet Lincoln over 1 mile on March 30. Blue Mist, trained by Roger Charlton, who won in good style at Ascot in October and ran 2nd behind Wissahickon at Chelmsford, is another for the notebook. David O’Meara has a trio of entries, having won the race with Bravery - tipped by The Leader - in 2017. O’Meara's stable newcomer Humbert is just 1lb higher in the ratings than when winning under O’Meara’s stable jockey Danny Tudhope at Newcastle in June. Humbert ran 2nd in the the Spring Mile Hcap on the opening weekend of the turf - and finished a neck 2nd behind Taqdeer in the Spring Cup Handicap at Newbury. Rip Orff, Kynren, South Seas, Masham Star and Remarkable are Lincoln eyecatching entries, with the latter allocated top weight, if Hathal doesn’t make the final cut.

On Monday in the Discovery Division we were at home to Emerald Isle Neptunes who are second top of the division. The Falcons needed the points and didn’t achieve them. The Neptunes just proved their place in the table and beat us quite convincingly. We did, however, have one winning rink and our thanks goes to: Tracey Paffett, Ken Barber and Roy Thomson 16 -12. Final result 62 shots to 91 against giving us 2 pts to 10 against. The Falcons have one match left to play against Emerald Isle Moonrakers who are middle of the table. On Friday we played at home the last match of the winter Southern League against Mazarron Miners who have topped the table. Congratulations to them. The warm sunny weather just added to the ambiance of the day. The Royals had to go for it and gain points to move up the table. We did that

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson This week the Southern League drew to a close but the Winter League continues for another few weeks and the South Alicante Winter League have one more match to play on Monday. In the Southern League Division A, the Swallows had a fantastic 10-2 win against La Siesta Blues winning on 4 rinks and just snatching the shots 9491. After the game the Club Quesada provided them with a superb 4 course meal with coffee and wine, followed by cava and cake from Keith Lowry on the occasion of Carol´s birthday. In Division B, after a very close match away to La Siesta Golds, the Swifts came away with a 6 point draw, also narrowly winning the shots 83-79. They celebrated the end of the season with a team meal at Alingue in San Luis. Final results aren't in yet, but hopefully this means the Swifts finish the season in 3rd place in league. Fantastic performance. Quesada’s Winter league squad continue to perform well, this week with a 10-2 win away against El CID. The shots were 78-55 which puts them in 4th position in the league at the moment. In the South Alicante Winter League Enterprise Division, the Pearls had an 8-4 win against Vistabella Drivers. The shots were 83-71. This means they go into the last week of the season in

3rd position in the league. Meanwhile there was good bowling on both sides when the Diamonds played Vistabella Albatrosses. Winning two rinks each and drawing one rink, the Diamonds just managed to claim the shots 85-83 and the points 75. A different story for the Rubies who suffered a resounding defeat against Vistabella Eagles, who won the match 12-0 with 106 to 65 shots. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. COUNTRY BOWLS By JO RICHARDSON
On Friday morning it came down to the last game of the season with Country Bowls Cubs holding onto 5th position by 1 point against the Roundheads, so everything was to play for. The Cubs welcomed San Luis Pumas and were motivated to score as many points as possible and they did not disappoint. With 4 out of 5 rinks winning and the overall shots were a positive difference to the cubs of 44, can they hold onto 5th place? The newly formed cubs have excelled in their first year at competitive bowling and deserve every success. Winning rinks were Sandra McIlroy, John Burke & John Mallet, Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andrew Bryce, Dave Smith, Dot Davies & Niel West and finally Sheena Mallet, Derek Lewis and Peter Robins. Great result Cubs. Country Bowls Geckos were away for their last

match of the season in the afternoon against Quesada Swans. From the off the Geckos took command with a real determination to finish the season on a high with another good win. A couple of the rinks were very close at the halfway mark and in the second half one rink was nip and tuck to the very end. By the 18th end the Geckos had their wish and were well up on all but one rink which was 3 shots up going into the last end, but unfortunately managed to drop 4 shots losing them the game by 1 shot. The victors were: Viv Brown, Pat Ray, Brian Ray, 20-12; John Jukes, Graham Richardson, Wayne Osguthorpe, 24-10; Carole Donnellan, Les Turner, Den Birkett, 18-13; Really bad luck to Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner & Jim Rennie who have been so successful all season to lose by just one shot on the last end. La Finca Golf to host the Miguel Ángel Jiménez Final
La Finca Golf Resort and the Miguel Ángel Jiménez Circuit have just signed a contract whereby the national final of the tournament will be held at the resort facilities for 3 more years (from 2019-21). The most important youth golf event of the year has been held at La Finca Resort for the last three years, and this December it will once again return to test the skills of the nation’s youngsters coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the resort itself. More than a hundred young golfers, boys and girls between eight and eighteen years of age, will compete in the national final of the tournament in the categories Benjamín, Alevín, Infantil, Cadete and Boys / Girls. The competition, 36 holes over two days, will be played a Medal Play Individual competition and will be attended by Miguel Ángel Jiménez himself, who will give a clinic and tuition on the La Finca Practice range. Following the 2018 tournament Jiménez said that "the facilities of the Finca Resort are magnificent, all the very best facilities are at hand and you can walk from the hotel", and as for the golf course itself, Jimenez said that "it is a very fun field, very varied, with spectacular greens." The Final of this event has already been held at La Finca Golf Resort in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Shoes - For comfort and stability he is currently using the latest Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour Shoes Now although he is a lucky bunny that he doesn't have to buy this little lot it just gives you and insight into the pre course planning necessary to get a quality player into the winners circle.
Rory McIlroy – What golf clubs does he use? Rory McIlroy has had a superb start to his golfing year with top six finishes in each of his first 5 events on the USPGA tour and finally winning the Players Championship at Sawgrass which is widely considered to be the 5th major. Now for many golfers here on the Costa Blanca a set of clubs consists of a bag of clubs purchased at an auction for €20 or on the other side of the coin the most expensive set of clubs, shoes, bag, gloves, balls and cashmere sweaters that far outway many players skill and capabilities. Have you ever thought of what clubs are in the bag of a major champion,if so take a look at the clubs currently in the golf bag of Rory McIlroy: Driver - Taylor Made M5 with speed injected twist face technology with tuning resin injected into the face to ensure if conforms to golf club rules. Fairway Woods - He carries either a 3 wood or a strong 5 wood of Taylor Made M5 or M6 technology. 2-iron - Usually has a Taylor Made P790 UDI with Project X HZRDUS 105 6.5 graphite shaft 3 iron to 9 iron - Has a mixture of Taylor Made clubs with the 3 and 4 irons being P750 and the 5 to 9 irons being P730 proto irons all fitted with Project X7.0 shafts Wedges - Currently he carries wedges of 48,54 and 60 degrees loft which are machine milled to his own personal specification.Although all are fitted with Project X 6.5 shafts the 48 degree club is a milled grind version but the 54 and 60 degree clubs are both hi-toe wedges Putter - For 2019 he is now using the Taylor made Spider X putter he he claims helps him with alignment which is where he had some problems in 2018. The following Friday we had a fun day at La Serena where we played a Texas scramble, the course is quite difficult but never the less the day was very enjoyable, with the overall scores finishing up very close indeed.
El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning the Palominos entertained Greenlands Chestnuts and played well to take 3 rinks and the overall shots, with a wind that was tricky to say the least. A good result for the Palominos. The Raiders were at Vistabella playing the Buggies and met some strong opposition, though coming away without a point. Sometimes the opposition is just too strong. Meanwhile the Pintos were at Mazarron playing the Miners, the stiff breeze making playing a mat with a reduction from 8 rinks to 7, just a little difficult, never seems to work well to me. But as always the company was good and we enjoyed the day, though alas we came away with just one point. Friday found the Rangers playing host to La Marina Merlins, playing well and ending with 3 rinks and the overall shots by just the one, a good result showing that the extra moment of concentration can bring you the extra 2 points. Meanwhile the Mustangs were at Greenlands against the Oaks and put in a good effort and particularly perseverance in the case of John Skipper’s trip, getting used to the rink until 15-1 down, then coming back to win 17-16. The Mustangs came away with 2 rinks, a very good away result. We should at the end of the season thank the team captains for their sterling efforts. In the afternoon the Broncos were at home to La Manga Crusaders and had a great day, taking full advantage of the home mat by taking all the available points. Val Ryder, Sheila Cox and Mike Cox 18-17. Emma Walsh, Ann C Taylor and Keith Longshaw 25-10. Maria Wilkinson, Liam Foley and Rob Clark 33-10. Gill Bartlett, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 22-5. Brian Yates, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 27-11. For further membership information contact Sheila Cox at micksheilacox@gmail.com or Brian Taylor on 965 07 7093 or at elranchobowlsclub@gmail.com

The scores on the day were as follows ; Nearest the pins, Theresa Wright (2) and John Clancy, the winning team was Dave Shelton, Roy Wilkinson Theresa Wright and Nigel Wright with a score of 64.81 the other team scores were 64.83, 64.97 and 65.65 so it was very close on the day.
Bonalba was the destination for our second trophy game of the season, the weather and the course were outstanding, but not the scores, our president managed to maintain his position at the top of the leader board with a poultry 31 points, the scores were as follows.
On both occasions we returned to the Raso Rooms for our presentation and a very nice buffet provided by our hosts Merrisa and Jamie. Football card winners were Alex Bolton and Theresa Wright. Our next outing is at Font Del Llop on the 29th March any one wishing to join us for this or any other game please email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
TPGS at Vistabella On this beautifully warm spring day the TPGS ventured over to Vistabella. The super fast greens proved to be a challenge for most of us particularly with some of the precarious pin positions! The 2’s pot was shared by the ‘inform’ Liz Sully and Ray Waite. Liz also picked up one of the treasured Ale House vouchers with a NTP (thanks to Karl and Lisa at the newly renovated Ale House) , Simon Lee bagged 2, Kev McBird and Val McNicholls each securing one. Alistair Gordon came last with a woeful 16pts, certainly room for improvement there! Once again Liz Sully was by far the best lady with a frankly rather disappointing 28 pts (19 of those where on the front 9). In the Silver division Ray Waite came 3rd with 29 pts George Maguire 2nd with 30 but the winner was the ever speedy Mike Greatorex with 33 pts! The Gold division was won by young Warren O'Harris with an
impressive 35 pts (leaping into 1st place in the Order of Merit) 2nd place was won by returning ex Captain Simon Lee and 3rd place was Phil "fresh air" Sully. Our next outing is on the 5th April at El Valle. With only 2 games to go in our season long Order of Merit competition and 6 players all in contention you’d be foolish not to book your spot online at www.theplazagolfsociety.com

MESSAGE FROM EURONIC’S DART LEAGUE COMMITTEE “It has been brought to our attention that a comment made by Simone in last week’s edition regarding the use of a St Patrick’s Day Hat as a rag for the chalk board, has upset quite a lot of people. The Committee would like to express their sincere apologies for this comment, it was a ‘tongue in cheek comment’ which was not meant to be disrespectful at all. Unfortunately, Simone’s report was not sent to the Committee for approval before it was published otherwise it would have been deleted. Please accept the Committee’s apology for any distress that this comment has caused.” Las Roses Bullies v Ale House This was a high scoring match with 29 scores of 100 or above. Ale House went straight into the lead winning all three trebles but Las Rosas Bullies making the matches all square at half time. Ale House then took control again in the singles with only Terry taking a point for Las Rosas. Many of the matches were close with the Ale House finishing better while Las Rosas Bullies often struggled to hit their double. Jordan Johnson was far and away MAN OF THE MATCH averaging more than any other player. Adrian claimed Man of the Match for the home team. Trinity Rioja Panthers v Pint Depot Queens

Finally going onto the singles the lights fused so we had a short break until they were fixed with, Dickie won the first single finishing with a D1 again but then the Pint Depot Queens won two singles in a row with Marie getting a high score of 100 and finishing with a D4, Debbie then went on to win the 3rd game with a D1. Harvey made a comeback for panthers beating Rachel with a D7 finish, but Alison won the next round beating Susie with D1. The final game was against Allen and Maggie but Panthers finished with D1, seems like most of the games tonight finished with D1. A good night overall with some banter and laughs between the teams. Woman of the match for Pint Depot Queens was Marie with the highest score of the night. Thanks to Trinity Rioja for sorting the electrical problem so promptly. Chemies Loungers v Peta’s Bar The first treble started well for Chemies Loungers with Tony’s D7, despite Sonya’s high score of 111 for Peta’s Bar. The next 2 trebles went to Peta’s Bar with some great arrows from Charles (85, 85) D6, Paul (84) and Sonya D11. Peta’s Bar took the first 2 doubles with the help of Paul (84), Viv D3, Sonya D5. Chemies Loungers Billy pulled out a 94 score and Mark won the last double for Chemies Loungers with D1. So the score was 2-4 to Peta’s Bar at half time. Now to the singles and the ‘curse of the singles’ rears its ugly head again for Peta’s Bar! Tracey’s high scores of (92, 83) and Jim’s (85) was no match for Chemies Loungers James (110,60) D6, Billy D4, Mark D18, Graham (100,80, D20) D18, Mike D2 and Tony D20. Although there were a lot of close games, Peta’s Bar just couldn’t get their doubles! It was a great evening, full of laughter and banter, mostly at the expense of Chemies Lounger Billy’s chalking! MOTM: Billy (Chemies Loungers), Sonya (Peta’s Bar)

Flagging up football’s own goal! AT a time when VAR (Virtual Assistant Referee) has become a part of professional football, albeit not across the board, there are still no LINESMEN in the amateur Valenciana 1st Regional Group 8. Clubs in the calibre of CD Montesinos, CD Dolores, CD Murada, CD Altet, Monovar CD, Bahia Santa Pola, AC Torrellano, Sporting San Fulgencio, Monforte CF, Atletico Catral, Hondon Nieves, AD Betis, Santa Pola CF, Racing San Miguel, CF Rafal, and Callosa Deportivo B, play in the 1st Regional Group 8 in the current 2018-19 season, WITHOUT linesmen. And it's not just at the 1st Regional group level the omission of linesmen is widespread in the lower echelons of the game in Spain. A shocking fact when you think that even junior level football in England at least have linesmen, in certain official leagues, as does Cubs football. The Valenciana Federation consists of Regional Preferente (level 5), Primera Regional (level 6) and Segunda Regional (level 7). The 3rd division Group 6 corresponds to the Valenciana community clubs, governed in part by both the Spanish FA and Valenciana FA. Once again with no linesmen this season it has caused widespread controversy, insofar as the games misdemeanor, of one official, the referee. In Spain referees in the 1st Regional G8 receive within the region of 135 euros a match. Teams who gain promotion from the 1st Regional G8 this season will see their costs triple - in paying
a referee - and two linesmen. This debacle is at time when the professional game of football at the higher echelons is flushed with more money than that of confetti used in Elizabeth Taylor's eight marriages. Non league and amateur football clubs - both in the UK and Spain - continue to struggle financially. And it's not just non league and amateur clubs match officials in the professional game at the lower echelons get a disparity when it comes to financial budgets in the UK. The Leader reveals the shocking disparity between the wages earned by Premier League officials and those who work more in the Football League in England. Select Group referees, mostly in the Premier League, earn a basic salary of around £65,000 per year. They also receive fees in excess of £1,000 per game in the top flight. Officiating 38 games in a season would tally pay in excess of over £100,000. Yet referees on the National Group in the
Football League are not on contracts and are paid in the region of £380 a match. They sign up to the National Group on the equivalent of a freelance basis. If they officiate the 46 games in a Football League season, they would receive £17,480. It's good news for Spanish officials with salary rises seeing Spanish referees becoming the highest paid in Europe, as La Liga plan to increase their income by a reported huge 50% by 2022-23. Referees will receive 296,000 euros per year, with assistants receiving a whopping 61% increase. Lower league officials pay will increase by 67% and 82%, respectively. And VAR is to be introduced in the Segunda division from 2019-20. The non-linesmen debacle shames football at a time when nets full of money are poured into the professional game - flagging up an own goal at amateur level!

Racing remain in promotion race despite heavy defeat at Torrellano BY ANDREW ATKINSON
Racing San Miguel suffered 4-1 defeat at AC Torrellano in a promotion race fixture.
Racing San Miguel suffered a thumping 4-1 away defeat at AC Torrellano in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 promotion race - in a controversial game - with fingers pointed to referee's dubious decisions. Torrellano's win (53 points) nudges them ahead of Racing (52 points) into second spot, below leaders CD Murada (54 points) who travel to Monovar on Sunday. CD Altet continue to pull away from the depths of the table - having sat bottom heading into the new year - with a 2-1 win against Callosa. San Fulgencio defeated Santa Pola CF 2-1, with Hondon Nieves remaining in the top four after a 5-1 away victory at bottom club Monforte. CD Montesinos gained a much needed victory in an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Betis Florida - to ease relegation worries, it being coach Ruben's biggest win since taking charge. Bahia Santa Pola host CF Rafal, and Atletico Catral entertain CD Dolores on Sunday.
Torry suffer from large dose of ref injustice Hercules had the first meaningful shot on target on 15 mins, when Cristo tipped over Olmedo´s goal bound shot for a corner.
The newly relaid pitch at the Gabriel Samper stadium with the main stand in the background
Although action packed, the 1st half lacked goal mouth incidents, and it wasn´t until Jose of Torry blazed over the bar on 32 mins, that the deadlock looked to be broken.
CD Torrevieja ...................0 Hercules CF ....................2 New Torry manager Jesus Martinez elected to play this top versus bottom Preferente division fixture inside the compact Gabriel Samper Stadium, as opposed the normal surroundings of Nelson Mandela Stadium. The reason given, was that it was felt that the opposition would be less comfortable in more intimate surroundings. Whether it is a one off remains to be seen, but wherever the last 3 home games are played, points are urgently required, if relegation is to be avoided. It´s quite ironic that back in early November, although Torry won on the pitch away in Alicante, due to fielding an ineligible player, those hard earned 3 points were cruelly reversed. This time around, Hercules had the help of officialdom once again, in the guise of referee Carlos Garcia, who incidentally hails from Alicante! Jesus Martinez gave debuts to recent signings Jonathan and Roman, in a bid to secure Torry´s first victory since early December.
How Abde headed over with the goal at his mercy on 40 min, only he will know, but a mightily relieved Torry side trooped off at half time, grateful that his bloomer ensured that parity remained intact. Pedja shot over from the edge of the box on 50 mins, as the visitors gave warning of their intentions. Tragedy struck 2 minutes later, in what proved to be a game changing incident. When Oleksandr and an opponent challenged for a 50/50 ball, Torry´s Ukrainian accidentally caught his man on the upper body. There was no malice intended, and at worst a yellow card could possibly have been administered, but for Senor Garcia to brandish a straight red was nothing short of criminal. As often happens in such situations, both sides waded in, resulting in yellow cards flying in all directions. A crestfallen Oleksandr was led off the pitch unable to stem his tears, shell shocked at such unbelievable injustice. Down to 10 men, Torry rolled their sleeves up, prepared for the battle that lay ahead. Ex Torry Juampe should have opened the scoring on 62 mins, but as he often did when with Torry,
missed the target!! Brazilian crowd favourite Thales, forced Hercules keeper into a brilliant diving save on 70 mins, as Torry were giving it their all. Alas, numerical advantage at last paid for Hercules, for 2 minutes later, a cross from the left by Josu found Olmedo at the far post, who from an impossible angle struck a worldly volleyed shot into the far corner of the net. When Thales was flattened inside the box on 80 mins, it was a cast iron penalty, only the match ref disagreed, choosing to wave play on instead. This visibly took the wind out of Torry´s sails, for it seemed only a matter of time before Hercules doubled their lead. Cristo did well to tip a long range Pedja effort onto the bar on 82 mins, but with time running out, a cross from the right by
Olmedo was headed home at close range by Belando. So, it´s now 12 games without a win for Torry, who remain firmly rooted in the SUDUKO SOLUTION relegation zone. A win away at mid table Elda Industrial next weekend (check club website for details) is a must, if they are to offer a glimmer of hope in avoiding the dreaded drop.
