“Team Orihuela” promises a better Costa Could this finally be the beginning that the Orihuela Costa has been waiting for, a new coalition that was launched on Friday to contest the 26 May municipal elections? Comprising of C.L.A.R.O., Cambiemos and Unidos Podemos, the three parties

have agreed to form a coalition on the basis of a New Orihuela, committed to sustainable development (no more uncontrolled building without corresponding services and infrastructure), de-centralisation of its administration, with equal and proportionate investments, guaranteed rights to

services, respect for the environment and equal rights. Lofty ideals indeed, but with the ruling Partido Popular in turmoil, a 2 year suspended jail sentence just last week for a former Orihuela PP Councillor, the previous PP mayor facing jail herself and the current PP mayor the sub-

ject of a fraud investigation by the Ministry of Health, there would seem to be no better time to launch such a political initiative in the municipality between three parties that hold common local political aspirations. Continued on Page 2

C.L.A.R.O. has been working with Cambiemos throughout the past 4 years, in particular on environmental issues such as the saving of Cala Mosca, the last green area on the coast, which is threatened with the construction of 1,500 new houses. Both parties also recognise the need for proper parks and gardens in Orihuela Costa. Recently Cambiemos presented a motion in the Town Hall plenary, with the support of C.L.A.R.O. and other coastal associations, for a radical de-centralisation of the administration and finances of the municipality, equal to fiscal autonomy. However this motion was defeated by the Popular Party-Ciudadanos government coalition. As well as holding common local political aspirations, another strong reason for the coalition is to counter the bias of the electoral system which penalises parties failing to reach a threshold of 5% of the total votes cast. In the 2015 elections C.L.A.R.O., with 1,400 votes, failed by 35 votes to elect a councillor. Podemos with 900 votes also failed and together well over 2,000 votes for parties in the new coalition were completely lost. This time, together with Cambiemos, which currently holds two councillors but in 2015 narrowly failed to elect a third the coalition believes that they have a real opportunity to elect a strong group which will be effective in changing the government of Orihuela, or will at least form part of a strong opposition, including a C.L.A.R.O. councillor who will provide a voice for Orihuela Costa in the next municipal government. Another positive factor is that the coalition has offered one of its posts on the list of candidates to an independent representative of the newly formed and potentially important Agrupcacion de Electores or Citizens Movement which has begun mobilising the mainly Spanish population of Orihuela Costa.

a clear and clear common framework." The foundations of the agreement include changes to the urban model, "to move towards a development that is more sustainable, respectful of the territory and economically fair," they said. The increase of the decentralisation and political and administrative autonomy of the Coast and districts; Equity and proportionality in investments, the administrative strengthening of the City Council and the protection of public services have been other highlights of this coalition agreement. It will also aim to "structure, unite, and guarantee equal rights and services throughout the municipality." For almost forty years, discussions leading up to the Orihuela municipal elections have centred on one thing: the number of votes that the Partido Popular (PP) would gain and the size of their majority, as they set about forming the next municipal government.

It is hoped that this will enable supporters of this movement to join C.L.A.RO. in obtaining votes in Orihuela Costa to ensure that the voice of the coast will be not only strong in the coalition but also in the new Town Council.

Four years ago the party was given, what should have been, a wakeup call, a result that saw them achieve just 11 of the 25 available seats. Hence, in order to ensure that they remained in power they set about establishing a coalition with Ciudadanos, thereby safeguarding their leadership majority in the municipal government. As a result, the political pendulum remained obligated to the people residing in the urban capital.

An important consideration in achieving this aim will be to ensure that British voters, whose right to vote has been confirmed, irrespective of the outcome of Brexit, will participate actively in the forthcoming election.

The PP had achieved their slender majority despite a backdrop of corruption by leading members of the Party which, at the time, offered a bleak picture of the political group, with the results being replicated nationally.

British voters represent a considerable electoral force in Orihuela Costa and it is hoped that they will show their appreciation of the generosity of the Spanish government in ensuring the conditions for their continued residence in Spain by exercising their right to vote and participate in decisions concerning their local environment.

Unfortunately the intervening years failed to see them learning any lessons but with the continuing apathy of many coastal voters at the 2015 municipal elections they were able to gain selection one again, since which time they have continued with their long history of using the income raised principally from taxpayers on the coast to provide greatly superior services and investments for Orihuela city.

Although the coalition is still to publish it’s current electoral list it is understood that Cambiemos councillor Carlos Bernabé will head of the list, while María G. Sandoval (winner of the Podemos primary) will be listed as number 2, Javier Gracia (Cambiemos) will be in the third position while C.L.A.R.O’s President, Helene Akermane will sit at number 4. Mamen López Raya, the representative of the Orihuela Costa Agrupcacion de Electores or Citizens Movement, will feature at number 6. On the ideological differences between the 3 parties, Carlos Bernabé said that "we have set aside many of our differences and we now have

Helene Akermane said that the coalition will help to end the present paralysis where Orihuela Cost has no voice in the government of Orihuela. “We believe that the coalition will show that the whole is greater than the parts and together we can ensure a change of government which will better serve the whole municipality. The parties in the new coalition, together and with the support of voters, can ensure a better future for Orihuela Costa and Orihuela”.

B omberas tackle fire close to Z enia B oule vard More than 15 firefighters were deployed on Thursday evening to fight a fire that had broken out in a Chinese bazaar located next to the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre on the Orihuela Costa. Although the cause is still not known it is understood that the fire broke out on the roof of the "Oriental Market", and quickly threatened to spread to the adjacent building, which accommodates a number of expat property businesses, bars and restaurants. Fortunately it was only the thick plumes of smoke that swirled across although, as a matter of safety, it was necessary to evacuate many of the bars. A total of 8 fire tenders attended the scene from the stations at Orihuela, Torrevieja and AlmoradĂ, as well as several patrols of the Local Police and the Civil Guard who were mainly responsible for securing the area and evacuating members of the public. It is understood that the first fire tenders on the scene took approximately 30 minutes to arrive. According to sources from the Provincial Fire Brigade, there were several card and chipboard boxes full of polyester on the roof of the building which could have been the reason for the fire

although at this stage the investigations are still ongoing. Fortunately there were no injuries to members of the public although a large quantity of shop stock was destroyed during the fire. The fire was brought under control within an hour and a half although firefighters remained on the scene for most of the night. The smoke was visible several kilometres away.

Rojales death, detainee pleads his innocence The 49 year old Hungarian man, arrested on Monday evening following the death of his 39 year old partner, Andrea, in Rojales, continues to plead his innocence. At a court appearance in Torrevieja on Thursday it was said that forensic tests are still to be concluded. Nevertheless he chose not to testify during the sitting and was ordered by the judge to be detained in Alicante’s Fontcalent prison. Acting on behalf of the accused, lawyer José Antonio Pérez explained that the fact of not giving testimony in court is due to the fact that at the moment there is only "circumstantial evidence" with a number of forensic and biological tests outstanding. The detainee arrived at court escorted by several Guardia officers. There were a number of cuts, bruises and other injuries visible on his face. A police spokesman said that such wounds could have been caused by the accused as he attempted

to defend himself in the course of a dispute which led to his partners death. In Alicante, Araceli Poblador, a government spokesman, confirmed that there were no previous reports of mistreatment and that the couple, although not registered, had lived in Rojales since last September. The detainee and the victim occasionally worked in the Budapest Hungarian restaurant on the ground floor of the building where the incident occurred. The man worked in the restaurant as an occasional cook while she was employed as a cleaner. The Rojales council called for three days of official mourning as a sign of pain "related to yet another case of gender violence." On Tuesday night there was a rally in front of the Council offices "to express our pain and in rejection of these events.” There were further gatherings across the province.

IS YOUR PENSION POT WISELY INVESTED? The favourite funds of people living off their investments in retirement have delivered handsomely over the past few years, new research shows. A saver who put a £100,000 pension pot into the bestselling Fundsmith Equity in spring 2015 would be sitting on £165,100 now - even if they had made withdrawals of £5,000 a year. The pension freedom reforms launched in 2015 mean a saver can now keep their pot invested and draw an income from it, rather than buy an annuity which provides a guaranteed income for life.

The good news is that so far, pension freedom investors have benefited from strong stock market returns and even better active fund selection, in most cases generating a golden combination of income and capital preservation. If you currently have a pension fund and are not sure how well it is performing or are thinking about taking control of your pension, then Seagate Wealth can help you make the right decision. We offer a range of pension solutions that offer our clients flexibility and control to ensure the best outcome for their pension.

Accessible beaches on the Orihuela Costa Luisa Boné, City Councillor for Beaches, together with Carmen Díaz and Belén Cascales, both members of the Association Orihuela sin Barrera (Orihuela without Barriers), spoke recently about many of the activities that will take place on the Orihuela Coast during the coming high season. The concentrated mainly on those that will be provided by the Mesa de Accesibilidad (a working group established by the Town Hall, which works for the needs of disabled people). Cllr Luisa Boné, together with Carmen Díaz and Belén Cascales of the Association Orihuela sin Barrera

Secrets of the American Tower Just to the south of Guardamar del Segura, inland of the N332, there is a compound that is surrounded by a perimeter of secrecy. Posters and signs warn that it is a prohibited area, a military zone and to which, over the last 50 years, there have been very few people who have gained admittance and learn the secrets of it’s inner chambers. But you will all be aware of the facility because its location is marked by an imposing aerial of over 370 metres in height, 475 metres above sea level. The tallest architectural structure in both the Iberian Peninsula and the European Union, it is known as the Tower of the Americans or Torreta de Guardamar. Originally built between 1963 and 1965 by the United States Army the base accommodates a radio station, the main purpose of which is to maintain contact with the underwater fleet, submarines from all over the Mediterranean Sea. Although today it serves the interests of the maritime branch of the Spanish Armed Forces, there was a time when it was controlled exclusively by the Americans, who posted soldiers into Guardamar to support its operation and maintenance. It was after the Second World War, during the Cold War when, in order to achieve a position of supremacy, the United States expanded its military bases on both sides of the Atlantic. The Guardamar site, due to its strategic position and proximity to the Straits of Gibraltar, ideally suited the objectives of the US Navy as a result of which a Spanish-American agreement was signed in 1953. It was the socalled “Pact of Madrid” that made the construction of the Guardamar Radio Station possible, finally entering service in 1965. Its main mission was, and continues to be, the transmission of data to and from the underwater fleet. It is now remotely controlled by the US Naval Communication Station in Rota. The operation of the installation was carried out by a section of 20 or so officers and men posted in by the United States Navy. They

worked inside the base, but were quartered in private accommodation in the town. In the early days at least two of them ended up marrying locally, one of them, a sergeant responsible for the electronic maintenance of the transmitters joining the unit on the day that it first opened. “At that time there were 17 American servicemen working at the base,” he recalls.

still a great unknown to many residents, because they do not know what is inside the base, who operates it and exactly what the functions are," Saez continued. “and the information that appears on the Internet is very limited. On Google maps the area is also completely blurred, thus preserving the mystery that has always surrounded the American Tower.”

Last year, for the very first time, the Ministry of Defence actually authorised a series of three guided visits to the base by local residents, finally ending the secrecy that has enveloped the site for more than half a century.

Some of the older residents in the town tell that it was a group of Indians who came to the municipality to help with the assembly of the 370-metre antenna, and they are absolutely correct. The American who served in the base between 1965 and 1968, confirmed that it was a tribe of American Indians from Oklahoma state who built the tower, the reason for which was their superior sense of balance, their agility and their ability to climb the structure as it was going up.

"We have lived with the antenna since it was first installed over 50 years ago, but until those first visits in 2018 it was a great unknown" said the mayor of Guardamar, José Luis Sáez.” “So far only three guided visits have actually been authorised, he said, “and the council is still waiting for permission to organise more. The expectation that has been awakened by the activity is very high and we are continually receiving requests from people who wish their names to be added to the list for the next visit,” added the mayor. "In Guardamar we have lived with the aerial since it was first erected, but in reality it is

Its early use and maintenance was the exclusive responsibility if the US Navy, but in July 1982 a memorandum of understanding between the two countries for joint use was signed. In 1990 the site was finally handed over in its entirety to the Spanish Navy. The installation, now renamed "Camp Santa Ana", is currently guarded by Spanish Infanteria de Marina.

Boné said that in conjunction with the Rescue Service and lifeguards "we will have bathing zones for the disabled with the appropriate aids, together with helpers who are trained in rescue swimming and First Aid. They will be sited at Cala Bosque in La Zenia, Playa de la Glea and Barranco Rubio in Campoamor and Cala Capitán in Cabo Roig”. The councillor added that: "The task of these lifeguards will be to help people with reduced mobility who come to the barrier-free bathing areas provided by the council." In addition, "assistance will include all the necessary services to enable users to enjoy all facilities available on the beach, from the beach bar service, to toilets or changing rooms, to bathing in the sea. Installations provided are intended exclusively for people with reduced mobility. These will consist of a platform with a pergola with foot showers and an amphibious chair". The councillor added that improvements will also be made to all beach walkways, the width of which will be doubled thus ensuring better accessibility. In addition “all beach bars will have menus and service booklets in Braille." Finally, Boné "thanked Chiringuitos del Sol, the operator of the beach bar service in Orihuela, for their initiative in implementing many of these measures and their cooperation and support in making our beaches more accessible."

The flight, Ryanair FR-8027, departed for London Stanstead from the new Murcia airport in Corvera when the crew stopped the departure climb and diverted to Alicante where the Boeing 737-800, registration EI-GJC, landed safely some 45 minutes after departure. Passengers were put onto a replacement aircraft and left from Alicante after a delay of around two and a half hours.

Help at Home Costa Blanca donate ambulance to Cruz Roja

Meanwhile, there was good news for Ryanair passengers this week as the airline inaugurated a new route from Alicante-Elche airport with a direct connection with Porto (Portugal) every Wednesday and Sunday. This is the latest in the continual development of both Ryanair and the Costa Blanca´s airport, which is also added to other new routes this week to Berlin-Tegel (Germany), Marseille (France) and London-Southend (UK). The Oporto route is a new destination from Alicante, and the first aircraft was washed down with a traditional water arch from the fire crew at the airport. dissolution, one of the accused, a woman, was sentenced to seven years in prison for theft, burglary and concealment.

Following months of fundraising by HELP at Home Costa Blanca, last Tuesday saw the presentation of a new 31,000 euro ambulance to the area’s Spanish Red Cross. The event took place at the Emerald Isle Leisure Complex in La Florida, the venue for so many of the charity’s fundraising events in recent years. The ambulance duly arrived bearing the HAHCB logo as well as a dedication to Kathleen Vahey, in who’s honour the bestowal was made. Charity President Carmen Perez explained that Kathleen was one of the charity’s great fundraisers “she was much loved and is missed by us all.” What made the event even more poignant was the attendance of Kathleen’s son Karl and her granddaughter Melissa, who flew over from Ireland to be at the ceremony. Karl said that he was extremely proud of the legacy that his mother has left behind.

Both she and the defendant, took the victim's mobile phone, a 62-year-old man, before she transferred 800 euros from his bank account to her own. Later, the pair asked for a loan of 2,400 euros, also in the man's name, although this was refused. Charges against a third person involved in the case were dropped.

This new route extends the connection to Portugal, a country that also links with Alicante-Elche through daily flights to Lisbon.

New Lidl for Torrevieja Lidl reopened its Torrevieja store on Thursday, after the shop closed in September for refurbishment, was raised to the ground, and is now a brand new building costing in the region of 3 million euro.

The murder was only discovered when the head of the deceased appeared at a landfill in Elche. Two days later, two legs were found, with the feet, as well as a bag containing the heart, lungs and the rest of organs.

The new store has also created an additional 9 jobs and is part of a major investment strategy in the Valencia region. Another new store at Burjassot opened on the same day, that one costing 5 million euro, but both investments are dwarfed by the 55 million being spent on a new logistics centre in Cheste, a location famous for its motorcycle race, amongst other things. Civil Guard warns of a new Tráfico scam

The message seems to be credible, containing all of the relevant detail regarding your tráfico fine; the place where the offence was committed, info regarding the offence and the amount of the fine. It even states the law that the driver has supposedly infringed.

The Civil Guard says that there are hundreds of drivers who have received this false fine by email and that it is a form of fraud known as phishing. In order to avoid being a victim, they are asking anyone in receipt of such an email to delete the message and report it to the authorities. The Civil Guard says that never notify drivers of fines by email but always by certified mail. They add that you can check if you have committed an offence by going to the DGT electronic office.

Mobile phones have become an extension of our hands and so normalised to us that many drivers are oblivious to the dangers. Our lives are becoming increasingly digitally orientated. The plethora of social media platforms, chat services and other applications are all calling for the users attention and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) has become a very real issue for many.

There is a substantial documented research proving that hand held and hands free mobile phone use is a significant distraction and substantially increases the risk of being involved in a crash.

Then we have those who actively engage with such platforms whilst driving. A short glance to read a notification can lead to tragedy but live and recorded video has become very popular and is increasingly leading drivers to record footage whilst at the wheel. A National Safety Council white paper concludes drivers using mobile phones have a tendency to look but not see (sometimes referred to as ‘Inattentional blindness’). A lorry driver involved in a crash that killed 8 people on the M1 in 2017 cited ‘Inattentional blindness’ in his defence, as he was using a hands free mobile device at the time his vehicle hit a minibus and shunted it into another lorry. #DontStreamAndDrive Day is in its 4th year. It is run entirely on social media and in the last 3 years has attained a social reach of over 100m. Its aim has always been to raise the awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and especially those engendered by recording or broadcasting video. It is the only campaign of its type in the world and has enjoyed the support of most UK police forces, many other emergency services, road safety organisations, the public and many police officers across the country on Twitter. It takes place this year on April 16th with support from the National Police Chiefs Council, Cheshire Constabulary and the National Roads Policing Intelligence Forum. ‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

CLOCKING BREXIT Did you remember to put the clocks forward one hour? Sadly, I completely forgot to attend to this bi-annual nonsense this time, but thanks to my smartphone and watch it was done automatically, and so there was no need to be concerned. My laptop computer and other devices all managed to adjust to the new time too. It was only a few years ago when the first part of the day would be spent adjusting the time on clocks and watches. Do you remember those annoying car clocks? I never did bother to change mine and worked on the basis that they would be correct for at least six months of the year, so why bother? Visitors often ask whether the time in the Canary Islands is the same as in the UK. It is, but it is not the same as in Peninsula Spain, which is always one hour ahead. This is due to a number of reasons, which I covered in an earlier ‘Letter’, with the main one being the agreement between Spain’s General Franco and Adolf Hitler during the Second World War, when Spain agreed to follow the same time as Berlin. Fortunately, the tedious nonsense of changing time forwards or backwards twice a year, known as Daylight Summer Time (DST), is due to come to an end, because the European Parliament approved a measure by a massive majority in favour to abolish the twice-yearly time change. The change will take place in 2021and individual member states will decide whether they wish to live permanently either on summer time or winter time.

15

b y Bar rie Mahoney

Once the decision has been made, it will become permanent. Many of us will recall all the usual arguments about the need to switch time twice a year because of “Scottish farmers” or “children walking to school in the dark”, as well as many more, but I have always remained unconvinced. To me, the arguments put forward have always seemed to be both spurious and unconvincing. I am more convinced by a growing body of evidence, which shows that time changes are harmful to public health, as well as to the economy. The time change confuses the brain and leads to a reduction in productivity. There are also increased levels of health concerns, including more accidents at work reported during the immediate period following a time change. One of the more plausible and historical reasons given for sticking with DST was thought to be a saving on energy costs. Even this argument has been shown to be nonsense, since data now suggests that the policy results in even greater energy consumption. Sadly, I do now have to mention the dreaded ‘B’ word, since the EU’s decision may or may not have an impact upon the UK. If the UK does finally leave the EU it will be free to continue with DST as usual and to ignore the EU’s decision to abandon it. I suspect there will be a strong move from Brexiteers to ignore any suggestions from the EU and to rigidly stick with DST, and no doubt on the grounds of “national sovereignty”. This would, of course, be nonsense both economically and socially for the island of Ireland, since the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland could potentially be

operating in two different time zones creating many unforeseen issues relating to cross border cooperation. Now, there’s another thought to toss into the already steaming and putrid cauldron, commonly known as Brexit. FAOC examine Ciudadanos, Orihuela, election manifesto

Monday 8th - Sunday 14th April, 2019

www.theleader.info

17

“Ciudadanos believe that they have the political will to ensure that the coast gets what it needs ” In a 2016 poll by Sociological Research (CIS) which asked citizens about the ideological position of Spanish political parties and where the respondent had to place each party on a scale of 1 to 10, where one referred to the political far left and ten, to the right, with 5.5 being the centre of the scale, respondents placed Ciudadanos at 6.65, slightly right of centre. The Orihuela Costa Community Association, FAOC, met with leaders of the local Ciudadanos party last week as they attempt to analyse the manifestos of all municipal political groups prior to the local elections at the end of May. Those present included José Fco. Aix (Local and Provincial Coordinator), Juan Ignacio López-Bas (Municipal Group Spokesman), Luisa Bonè (Councillor of Beaches and Secretary), Marcelo Fuentes (Communication), Stefan Pokroppa and Peter Houghton (both of whom will be included on the electoral list). Areas covered included setting of local budgets, decentralisation of administration and the unification of the two Orihuela Costa Districts.

They would create an Annual Action Plan for the maintenance and renovation of roads, gardens, lighting, etc as well as improving resources that are allocated to road cleaning and urban cleanliness.

In addition, they say that they would create a single technical office, with delegations in OC and districts; as well as expanding the technical staff, which is currently insufficient.

They stated that the political will has been lacking in order to ensure the coast gets a cultural centre which they will address. The party say that they will also ensure construction of a bridge across the AP7 at Lomas de Cabo Roig.

They also believe that in the OC there should be at least one technical office for Urban Planning and Infrastructure based in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall.

On the subject of an ecopark they agree that there is a need for an eco-park, although it is necessary to establish exactly where it can be situated.

Ciudadanos state that they would also establish a Social Security Office on the coast as well as sharing the need to open a second Health Centre. In addition, they see the possibility of creating several medical offices across the OC, as has been done in the districts.

The party has said that it will also improve local interurban public transport as well as resolving the situation with regard to a shortage of taxi’s on the coast. And finally, on the subject of the sale of plots of coastal land Ciudadanos states that the sale of plots should only be done when there is a need; and that 50% of the proceeds must be returned to OC.

Horadada BC

with Irene Graham

The first match of the VCL League summer season started on Friday. This is slightly different from the winter leagues as we play different disciplines. Horadada was playing away to Greenlands Jasmin and didn’t quite get the result we would have liked. Our representative in the ladies singles was leading for most of the match with Greenlands playing catch up, and catch up and overtook they did in the last two ends. Mark Jukes in the gents singles was the opposite. We were playing catch up and drew level to be pipped at the post on the last end. The pairs only lost by one shot. The trips was our only winning rink and that was: Tracey Paffett, Fred Trigwell and Roy Thomson 22 – 14. Greenlands got the overall shots. The final result being 86- 90 and 2 points to 10 for Greenlands. Our club shouldn’t be disheartened by this first summer result. The score on all of the rinks could so easily have gone either way. Very well played to all of our players, Friday was just not our day. We should keep reminding ourselves that we are a small club and can compete with the best. The next VCL match is in May and we are at home so let’s concentrate on a positive result.

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson

The Summer season started this week, and after the deluge of rain on Sunday, the South Alicante Summer league began on Monday with all the extremes of weather - sun, cloud, wind and rain. It was also a day of extremes for the Quesada squads - the Blenheims won the match against the Lancasters 12-0 points and 118-70 shots. A great start for the Blenheims, commiserations to the Lancasters, but plenty of time to redeem themselves in the weeks to come. Carp R Us Angling Club Round seven of the Carp-R-Us Spring Series was fished on the River Segura at Torre de Oliverejos, near Calasparra. This venue had a lot of work done a few years ago with over 30 purpose-built fishing stations being created. Sadly, all but seven of these are now unusable and the stretch feels very neglected. The fishing was again very poor with only four anglers catching fish, two of these only managing a single small fish. First was Steve Fell with 0.25kg caught on pole and maggot. Second was Dave Sutton with 0.15kg (two nase), third equal were Steve Collins and Richard Crawshaw. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.comor on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.

Former Preston North End, Sunderland, Blackpool and Netherlands club PEC Zwolle striker Holden would have celebrated his 64th birthday in August. Holden, who died in 1981, made over 150 career appearances and is one of many people who have lost a young life to MND - an incurable disease. Holden was forced to retire in 1979 while in the Netherlands, having played just 10 games for PEC Zwolle. Two years later, Holden who lived in Penwortham, Preston, my birth City, was dead. Almost four decades since Holden's passing footballer Fernando Ricksen, 42, is in St Andrews Hospice in Airdrie, Scotland, six years after being diagnosed with MND. Former Rangers star Ricksen, who has a property near Valencia, uses a voice-counter to speak. Ricksen, diagnosed in 2013, was told he had 18 months to live. Brave Ricksen continues to fight the disease, and is actively raising awareness about the illness: "I just keep going,” said Ricksen, who has a six year old daughter, Isabella. Ricksen’s second wife, Russian born Veronika, and Isabella, visit him frequently from their Spanish family home, where she had been caring for him.

La Manga Resort cricket tour builds good team spirit for Glasgow Academy EXCLUSIVE Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader sports reporter Andrew Atkinson talks exclusively with Vedam 'Hari' Hariharan, Cricket professional at Glasgow Academy following their recent tour at La Manga Resort, Spain. The Glasgow Academy organised a pre-season cricket tour for their U13s and U16s teams to La Manga during March and April. "The La Manga Resort opening tour match was against Malta CC, who were there in connection with the ICC Championship matches," said Hari. "Glasgow Academy U16s bowled first, and, after picking up a couple of wickets, found the Malta CC batters more experienced in their approach to up the scoring rate in their allotted 15 overs," said Hari. "Credit to the Academy boys, who kept picking wickets, and were able to limit Malta to 147-7 off 15 overs," said Hari. "Although 147 was too high a score for the school boys to chase, the Academy boys batted well, to finish on 97-1 at the end of the 15 overs," said Hari. Glasgow U13s squad were put though training in the nets, improving their skills. "The Academy teams improved their skills in the nets and played a practice match to understand the building of an innings, running between the wickets, bowlers understanding field placing, and fielders on expectations and backing up," said Hari. Glasgow Academy's next match was against LaMangaTorre CC: "All the Academy bowlers bowled well. "However the Academy batters found scoring at the required rate difficult against accurate bowling from LaMangaTorre CC. Glasgow Academy returning 97-1," said Hari.

MOTOR Nuerone Disease victim Mel Holden died in 1981 aged 26 - leaving a wife and young family behind.

Having washed, dressed and fed him, she is no longer able to provide round-the-clock medical attention, that is now undertaken at St Andrew’s Hospice. Ricksen will spend the remainder of his life there. Isabella, Fernando and Veronika depart in tears - when his wife and daughter return home to Spain after visits. Another footballer diagnosed with MND was Bolton defender Stephen Darby - aged just 29. He announced his retirement in 2018. Former Liverpool prodigy Darby, married to Manchester City defender and England Ladies football team captain Steph Houghton, is receiving support from the Players Football Association (PFA). “I have seen first hand how difficult it has been for Stephen, Steph and his family - but he has conducted himself with a tremendous amount of dignity and bravery. “Stephen has been a credit to his profession. Myself and the PFA will continue to support Stephen in his battle ahead against motor neurone disease," said Matthew Buck from the PFA. Returning to Holden, who played under former England and Manchester United star Sir Bobby Charlton at Preston in the seventies. Deepdale teammate Mike Elwiss told a story of dressing up - as ice cream men - during a team talk! Elwiss recalled when Bobby Charlton arranged a special coaching film, and all the players had to attend. Elwiss and Mel Holden donned white coats, held torches and had an ice cream box each.

Following the game the Glasgow Academy visited the historical sites in Cartagena, including the Roman theatre, taking in a Roman forum. The Academy also took in facilities at the resort, with time in the Gym, Swimming pool and playing table tennis. Glasgow u16s played Cricket Scotland’s Girls team, in a 14 overs match. Glasgow Academy batted first and with some good batting from Jack Macamley Wilding and Lucas Pierotti, Glasgow Academy finished with 96-5 wickets, from 14 overs. "Scotland’s spinners bowled well and their fielding was also good," said Hari. In reply Scotland lost their way - due to some good fielding - and throwing from the deep by the Academy boys, resulting in 4 vital run outs. Glasgow Academy won the match by 18 runs. "The final match of the tour featured the Academy U13s defeating Stewart’s Melville College," said Hari. "The pre- season tour, which took in training and matches at La Manga Resort, was good," said Hari. "It was good to see the boys enjoy the tour - and build a good team spirit - for the fast approaching 2019 cricket season," said Hari.

Mel Holden, front row far right, with Bobby Charlton (centre) at Preston NE in the 1973-74 season. As the coaching film played in the dark - Elwiss flicked a light switch - and he and Holden announced: 'Choc-ices, crisps, pop-corn, lemonade'. Elwiss, Holden and the players howled with laughter. Charlton was lying on the floor in fits of laughter. A light hearted indelible everlasting memory, taken from a tragic story in the life of MND victim Mel Holden.

WHAT WITH SHOT CLOCKS and Super Six sprints, there is no shortage of attempts to modernise golf tournaments. The European Tour wallahs should perhaps spend a few days at the Sunningdale Foursomes, held in Berkshire every March, and see if anything can be learned from it. The historic, much-loved event welcomes male and female amateur and pro golfers to one of Britain's finest golf clubs. The annual Sunningdale Foursomes was first played in 1934, and is open to all golfers through a unique handicap format, which allows pros, amateurs, men and women to compete fairly from the same set of tees. They find out what a leveller alternate shots can be. All Professional Golfers (Men) play from a handicap of +1. All Amateurs (Men) play from a handicap of scratch. All Professional Golfers (Ladies) play from a handicap of 2. All Amateurs (Ladies) play from a handicap of 4. Foursomes is still very much part of golf in England and it showed at last year’s Ryder Cup (Europe won the foursomes matches 6-2.) Past Sunningdale winners include Max Faulkner, Peter Alliss, Luke Donald, and Ross Fisher. This year two former Open Champions, Sandy Lyle and Paul Lawrie, happily teed it up with the amateurs. Womens’ Open champion Georgia Hall played in a field that included two mens’ European Tour players. They all come and subject themselves to the early spring weather (particularly unfriendly this year) and the likelihood they will be eliminated by some chancers no one has ever heard of in the second round TWENTY FOUR YEARS AGO on April 3rd, 1995, Tiger Woods, aged 19, drove through the gate at Augusta National Golf Club for

the first time. He was not impressed, commenting: “Magnolia Lane, is that it? — I thought it was a pretty short drive.” Nick Faldo said after his first practice round with Tiger: "He hits it long, his shoulders are impressively quick through the ball. That's where he's getting his power from. He's just a very talented kid." Woods made the cut and tied for 41st. Two years later, in 1997 he won the Masters aged 21, with a record 270 (18 under) twelve strokes ahead of Tom Kite. They lengthened the course after that. THOSE WERE THE DAYS: In the 1980-90’s the Masters almost became European property with Sandy Lyle (1988), Nick Faldo (1989, 90 and 96), Ian Woosnam (1991), Bernhard Langer (1985 and 93) and Jose-Maria Olazabal (1994 and 99.) It would be nice to think the European golfers today could start another run, there are some promising contenders. After the recent Players Championship I’ll have a bob on McIlroy. GOLF LORE SAYS if you win the par 3 tournament before the Masters, you are guaranteed a rotten finish in the real thing. Some players have admitted to throwing the par 3 or skipping it completely to increase their chances. It will be interesting to see who wins the par 3 this year. Before 1982 the local caddies had a hard time of it at Augusta. The club was only open for 7 months of the year and members were forbidden to tip them. They lived for the chance of a share in the Masters prize money. However, in 1982 play ended early on the Thursday due to a storm so tee times were brought forward to the Friday. Some caddies did not realise this and weren’t on the tee the next morning, and some

players found the caddies had not dried their clubs for them. After that it was decided that Augusta could no longer bar tour caddies, although some players kept theirs on. Jack Nicklaus said he couldn’t lose his faithful Willie Peterson, who was at his side for all his six Masters victories, and who’s dance when Nicklaus holed a 40footer for birdie on the 16th in 1975 would have won him a place on Strictly.til next time Another of David Lettermans reasons why golf is better that sex:. El Plantio2 Golf A packed car park at 8 o'clock in the morning gave warning that a tournament was being staged on the 18 hole course, but it would not cause the 9 hole course any problems - would it? Eight members had completed the first nine holes of a Joker Competition, when one of the course marshals rode up in his buggy and ordered us off the course and we paid-up members were 'persona non grata.' We were making strong representations to the reception when our helpful Spanish marshal, David arranged for us to complete the course after

Riquelme. 3rd Apr Twenty eight members and seven guests turned out to play at Hacienda Riquelme, a notoriously difficult course. As usual the course was well presented but it had some tricky pin placings. Usually scores are low and the course tends to favour the higher handicaps, especially when it gets a little breezy. This proved to be the case as in the Bronze Division Keith Wickham scored a creditable 36 points, the best score of the day. With drives running out of fairway the lower handicappers were often seen searching for lost balls. The cause being the thick spear grass which lines the fairways in abundance on most holes. It seems that the groups in front of us (not SMGS) did not know the search time for lost balls has been reduced to three minutes, as it was a very slow 5 hour round. It would appear consideration for your fellow golfers is on the decline amongst the holiday golfers. Talking of consideration; the group following myself failed to notice one of their group was absent. He had fallen into the lake on the fourth hole and was struggling to climb up the steep side. They were engrossed in playing out on the green and were oblivious to his predicament and our shouts from

I’m sure they would have noticed his absence on the next tee. At least the sun and the breeze dried him out quickly and he managed to complete 18 holes. Golf aside, probably the highlight of the day for quite a few, was a drink on the patio of the Casón after a hard day at the office. A pleasant place to be for non golfers as well. “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON Men’s Singles Competition By Debbie Wright

Ladies’s Singles Competition By Gilly Kirby

What a great night, super atmosphere with some great darts.

Well it was certainly all aboard at El Capitan as the Ladies and their supporters came together for the Euronics Ladies singles Knock out competition. With some good scoring from all the competitors as you would expect at this level, we were indeed entertained. The games were best of 3, 501. As this was a fresh competition, names were drawn for the night's line up as follows; Yvonne v Lesley, Pat v Hennie, Sonya v Maggie and Michelle v Simone.

In the first round the men played best of 3. Unfortunately, with one of the players having to return to the UK, we only had 7 men which gave Edmondas a bye in the draw, so the first game had an instant winner. The second match saw Graham Soloman beat Aroldas Klimonis. Whilst Aroldas hit 140 as well as other good darts, Graham was like a machine gun, and whilst he did hit a 140, his other darts were steady. With a 15, D20 followed by 20 D20, Graham secured a place in the next round.

As a previous champion, Yvonne from Trinity Pirates showed her skill as she took on Lesley from the Hellraiser's with some great scores of 90, 60, 81 and 90. Yvonne took both legs 60, 65, 100, with D4 finish then 95. 60 and with 96 left, a great 2 dart finish T20, D18.

The third game saw Alex Nicolov beat Barry Shingler 2-0. Alex had a couple of 100´s and then hit D8 whilst Barry had a 96 and although he was close, Alex missed D20, missed D10 but with his third dart took D5.

Pat from Jaguars v Hennie from Chemmies Chicks were next in the seat with Hennie taking the first leg 61, 63, 66, D8 finish. Pat took the second with a nice 3 darter 19, 5, D8, but Hennie saw it through to the finish with a slick D4. Pat scored 81's aplenty!

The fourth game saw Nigel Justice and Jordan Johnson play. Nigel hit a few 85´s and 100´s and Jordan hit a few 100´s and a great 121. Jordan took both games D2 and D8.

Sonya from Peta's Bar v Queen Maggie up next with the first to Sonya 2, D1, Queen Maggie took the 2nd but Sonya showed her strength as she smoothly stole the 3rd 105, 92 and D20 finish.

In the second round the men played best of 5.

Last to try for a Semi-final place were Michelle of Trinity Rioja Panthers and Jaguar Simone with both ladies’ previous champions, this was certainly going to be interesting. Michelle took the first D1. Simone evened the score D2 and a fab 114 helped too. In the end it was last year's champ who finished the game with a 3 darter in true Michelle style, bish, bash, bosh, 17, 3, D9.

Edmondas and Graham played first. Edmondas 100, 100, 140 took the first 2 legs D4 and D8 even though Graham hit 100, 100, 140, 98, 99, he just couldn´t find the double, then Graham took control and with 100, 100, 100 and 140, 140 he caught up with D4, D4. The deciding leg saw Graham hit 99, 100 and Edmondas hit 85, 95. Graham needed 56 and hit 16 but missed D20. Edmondas needed 8, hit 4 then D2 to take the game. Alex & Jordan played next. Alex struggled to get started and Jordan took advantage with some steady darts and hit D8 then D16. Then Alex took control and managed to hit D4 and then D11. The deciding leg saw Alex hit 85 and Jordan 100, 125. Alex´s darts didn´t go where he wanted, Jordan needed 53 and hit 6, 7, D20 taking the game. After a break with a nice bowl of hot pot, the finals, best of 7 took place. Edmondas had a great 112 and Jordan 94. Jordan needed 20 and decided to do his own thing with 6 D7. Edmondas had 100 and then a little calculation issue ... he needed 40 and for some reason hit D8, no problem, D5 followed and then the third dart D7 ..... not the way

Mens and Ladies Singles Winners I would have gone! In the third game Jordan was getting a little nervous and hit 100 but struggled. Edmondas hit a 122 he then needed 28, 14 D7 bingo! In the fourth game Edmondas hit a 121 and finished on D13. In the following game Jordan hit 73 and left himself 6, he just couldn´t quite get the D3. Edmondas had 85, 100 and left himself 20. The first dart was outside the wire, but the second one went inside the wire and D10 secured the match. Congratulations to Edmondas of El Capitan. Well done to all players ... some great darts, great sportsmanship. Thank you to all the supporters who encouraged the players. Thanks to Ben for scoring and his professionalism during the evening. Thanks to the Pint Depot for hosting and providing the hot pot.

After a very large spread of half-time food supplied by El Capitan, we moved on to the semi-finals with Yvonne v Hennie. Yvonne took both legs with some good scoring from both ladies, then Yvonne was on course for the final. D4 and D1. Not sure what was in Sonya's drink, but it certainly drove her at speed to take on Michelle, both legs with D18 finishes and the highest score of the night 115. With the finals set to be 501 best of 5, we were in for some long games but, this wasn't the case as both Yvonne and Sonya gave us some great darts and quick finishes. Leg 1 to Sonya D2, leg 2, Yvonne nice 3 darter 19, 20, D10. Leg 3 Yvonne D20. Leg 4 to even the game Sonya her favourite D18. The 5th and deciding leg was Sonya's D20. Despite Yvonne scoring 5 x 100's on the night, it was down to finishing. Well done to the finalist Sonya from Peta's Bar. This week one of The Society’s favorite courses ...El Valle...which was in very good condition but again pretty tricky which was reflected in the scores. This was the case for Mr Cheeseman who's highlight of the day was taking one of the nearest the pins vouchers whilst posting 16 pts but was still in good spirits! Other nearest the pin winners were Ronaldo Temple, Big Phil De Lacy, Mike Greatorix and Nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th - Colin Wilson. Only one of these went on to make a 2 which highlighted how tricky the greens were,so well done to to Mike Greatrix for scooping the whole pot. Our best lady on the day was Ruth Malcolm who scored a credible 27 pts off handicap 15...well done Ruth. On to our Order of Merit divisions which is hotting up with only one event left and there are plenty of players with a shout on the 8 top places and prizes. In Silver Mike Greatorix figured again coming 3rd with 31 pts off 13, 2nd saw the animated Mr Flood with 33 off 17 just missing out to Steve Hitcham scoring 34 also off 17. In Gold Gareth Davies came 3rd with 30 off 10 missing out to Tom Malcolm on count back also with 30 off 7 but well ahead and continuing his great recent form was Callum Hitcham playing close to his 1 handicap posting 35pts. So just one event left this season - Captain’s Day Vistabella Friday 19.04.19 Log onto our website www.theplazagolfsociety to register.

Leader tip Tiger Roll wins National The Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader tip Tiger Roll (4-1) raced into the history books as he became the first horse since Red Rum to win backto-back wins of the £1m Randox Health Grand National at Aintree on Saturday. "To win two nationals is unbelievable. I can't believe it - I really can't," said winning jockey Davy Russell. "Tiger Roll is a 'tiger'," said tearful trainer Gordon Elliott after a magnificent achievement in racing's showcase. It is 46 years since Red Rum claimed the first of his three victories in the world's most famous steeplechase - successfully defending his crown in 1974 - before completing a trio in 1977. Tiger Roll returned the 4-1 favourite in the 40 runners field over the gruelling 4 miles two and a half furlongs marathon. "He hit a lot of fences - he was a bulldozer in his younger days - but I was happy in the latter stages, still on the bridle," said Russell, who had Tiger Roll well positioned throughout, moving to the front to go-on in the long run-in to claim an historic victory over Magic Of Light. Rathvinden (8-1) - tipped each way by The Leader - was third and Walk In The Mill finished fourth. "Unbelievable. It was a beautiful ride by Davy Russell. And a phenomenal training win from Gordon Elliott. To win two Grand Nationals is

incredible," said Tiger Roll owner Michael O'Leary. Ruby Walsh, riding Rathvinden, said sportingly: "Tiger Roll seemed to be going so easy. Rathvinden made a couple of mistakes and although I got back on the bridle I struggled to eye a win." Trevor Hemmings, winning owner of three Grand Nationals, said: "It was an incredible run by Tiger Roll. A superb horse - and deserves it." Jubilant jockey Russell also praised those in attendance at a packed Aintree: "Racing has the greatest fans of any sport." Trainer Elliott added: "I am not usually emotional, but Tiger wants to win. This is something that you dream of. "Tiger is a star and his win is for everyone in the team back at the

stables. Everyone. It's for all the yard." Tiger Roll's win gave Leader punters a 40-1 double following winning selection If The Cap Fits (71) in the Ryanair Stayers Chase over 3 miles, under jockey Sean Bowen. Leader winning selections also included Cilaos (15-8) at Chepstow, and Lingfield double Mawsool (6-4) and El Ghazwani (4-9). *Andrew Atkinson, who had 11 winning tips at the Cheltenham Festival in March, reports from the turf, along with Saturday racing tips - exclusively to the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader. CDMurada, Torrellano and San Miguel in race for Regional title BY ANDREW ATKINSON AC Torrellano romped to an emphatic 4-1 win against leaders CD Murada in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 to narrow the gap to just one point in the race for promotion. With three games remaining CD Murada lead the table placings on 60 points from 27 fixtures. Racing San Miguel, former title favourite, sit in third place with a game in hand going into their fixture against CD Montesinos on Sunday evening, on 53 points. Hondon Nieves look to have scuppered hopes of promotion, with a shock 2-0 home defeat against lowly Real Betis, with Betis easing relegation worries - as the battle against the drop hots up. CD Altet continued their climb off the foot of the table, that kicked-in at the turn of the new year, with a 4-0 away win at Monovar CD, putting them into the top 10 table placings. Atletico Catral and Santa Pola CF shared the points in a 1-1 draw. San Fulgencio defeated CF Rafal 4-1, leaving Rafal amongst the bottom basement clubs in 13th place. On Sunday Bahia Santa Pola host Callosa Deportivo B, and bottom club Monforte CF host CD Dolores. *Full coverage with match reports and photos will be in the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader in the race for the title - and battle against relegation - hots up.

Goals galore but Torry wait for victory goes on A slender one goal victory over rock bottom Villena way back in early December, was the last time Torry tasted the sweet success CD Torrevieja .......................4 of victory. That´s a mind Callosa Deportivo CF...........4 blowing 14 matches ago, but had a rocky defence stayed firm, then it would have been lucky 13. For having got themselves back from being behind, into a match winning position with only seconds remaining, they sadly let victory slip once again. Players and subs mob Thales after scoring the teams 4th goal Photo_Joaquín Carrión

So, there´s now only 4 matches left from which to somehow conjure up probably 2, if not more, victories. As this was the only Preferente league match played on Saturday, results from Sunday’s games affecting fellow relegation battlers Villena, Aspe and Benidorm, aren´t known at the time of going to press. Although this vital point has lifted Torry to 3 points from safety, there are stronger teams than Callosa to come. Following next weekend’s visit to Alicante University, when incidentally Torry Army are sending a coach, a visit from high flying Independiente Alicante awaits. Although the last home match at the beginning of May against Villena is winnable, a visit to arch local rivals Thader Rojales rounds off the season. Manager Jesus Martinez was forced to include recently signed keeper Raul, for Cristo was serving a 1 match ban for his sending off at Elda, as was midfielder Matias. The first 20 minutes were played in gale force conditions, an electric storm complete with torrential rain, inside Nelson Mandela stadium which offers virtually no protection from the elements. In fact, all action before this has been recorded by memory, for had I attempted to take written notes, they would have been completely sodden (as were all spectators in the ground, which weren´t that many!). It took only 2 mins for Torry to take the lead, a through ball by Thales which skimmed over the surface to Xavi, who kept his feet before striking a sweet angled shot past the keeper. Fast forward 7 minutes, when it was Callosa´s turn to provide the action. An assist by Victor found Salva, whose accurate shot beat Raul just inside his near post. That was it as regards goals scored before half time, but Torry new boy Raul was definitely the busier of the keepers during

the 30 plus minutes that remained. Torry fans have become immune to watching their team concede goals, so it was no surprise when on 55 mins, Salva crossed from the left for Carles to shoot home, putting the visitors ahead. Substitute keeper Armando got a hand to the ball, but alas he could not prevent it from crossing the line. Enter the superb Torry fightback. A short corner by Thales on 62 mins was played into the path of Augustine, resulting in him executing a glorious curling drive, giving keeper Pino no chance. A couple of minutes later, Torry took the lead. Once again the Brazilian magician, who goes by the name of Thales, was provider. His assist to Oleksandr was inviting, and from 25 yards, the Ukrainian unleashed a blockbuster finish. Substitute Moi hadn´t been on the pitch long before he found Thales in space on 77 mins. This time Thales elected to go it alone, beating 3 men before dispatching a confident low drive, which should have placed his side out of sight. But this is Torry we are talking about, and with only 9 minutes remaining, a Salva cross took a wicked deflection off a Torry defender. The ball sailed across goal into the path of Carles at the far post, giving him the simple task of tapping the ball home. Then on the stroke of normal time, a loose ball was seized on by Tone, whose surprise snap shot from the edge of the box, sped past Raul into the back of Torry´s net. Fancy a trip to Alicante University sports complex next Saturday or Sunday, kick off time unknown? If so, check on CD Torrevieja website, and Torry Army facebook pages for details.
