The Show Choir to Perform in Torrevieja The Show Choir was founded in 2012 by Paul Day. Paul spent many years on the stage playing roles as diverse as Arvide Abenathy (Guys & Dolls) and Monsieur Le Clerc (‘Allo 'Allo). As an MD/Chorus Master he worked with many of the local musical and theatrical societies in and around Southend, Essex. The Show Choir is a community-based choir with an emphasis on fun and the enjoyment of singing. As well as traditional musicals such as Les Miserables, Chorus Line, Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Jersey Boys etc, they also cover the more modern ‘jukebox’ musicals so you may hear them singing anything from
Cole Porter to Tina Turner or from Queen to Abba. The Show Choir is based in Essex and is open to anyone aged 16 and above with a passion for music and the ability to have a good time and make a beautiful sound. The Show Choir performs in local theatres and churches as well as outdoors, and most of their performances are for charity. The choir members are very excited to be visiting Torrevieja, in conjunction with the Lions Club Torrevieja Suomi, and are looking forward to performing in aid of Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja. The Show Choir is scheduled for Torrevieja’s “Old Casino” on Thursday 16th of May at 20:00h and in the “White Church” of Plaza de Oriente on Saturday 18th of May at 20:30h, just after evening mass. Entry is free to both concerts.

PP Assessor defects to Ciudadanos
The adviser during the current Orihuela government to the PP Councillor for Tourism and Foreign Residents, Fermín González, announced last week that he will be supporting Ciudadanos in the next Municipal Election to be held on 26 May. In recent days the assessor, who still remains an employee of the Partido Popular, has been increasingly seen in the company of C’s councillors and officials, even attending the launch of the Party electoral delegates in Orihuela last Thursday. Fermin is well known locally and during the period of the current government he has been located in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall where he has been of great assistance to, and has made many friends in, the expat community. Although he told the Leader that he just wants to ‘keep his head down and get on with his work’ his defection is just another example in the crisis that is currently affecting the PP. It is well known that the current mayor and candidate Emilio Bascuñana is still at loggerheads
with the local president Dámaso Aparicio with no likelihood of any resolution between the two politicians. As such, Tourism adviser Fermín González, has now decided to depart the formation of Pablo Casado and move across to his main rival at the polls, Ciudadanos. Gonzalez is not on the list of Orihuela candidates, which is led by José Aix, but he will be one of the visible faces of the campaign and considered as one of his "star signings". His immediate boss, Sofía Álvarez, is one of the councillors who refused to stand on the PP list for the upcoming elections, saying that she was completely disheartened by the party split caused by Bascuñana and Aparicio. But she added that despite widespread speculation and her many differences with the two men she will not be leaving the Partido Popular. Ciudadanos leader, José Aix, said that "there are many people who are approaching my party because they are despairing of the internal situation of the PP”. He added that "there is a lot of internal pent-up anger among the PP and many people even say that they want to help us, but they will not say it publicly." On the defection of well-known faces from the PP, Aix indicated that "in the PP there are some very capable people so if they want to help us in the future they are welcome to do so.”

Do you know how your pension is invested? Do you have an old workplace pension but haven't a clue about how your money is invested or have old pensions that you've lost track of?
Many people therefore choose to open a self-invested personal pension - a Sipp - that offers them a much wider choice of funds and other investment options.
If so, you're not alone.
Put simply, Sipps are a type of do-it-yourself private pension that allow savers to cherry pick from thousands of investments to create a portfolio tailored to their individual appetite for risk and investment objectives.
Most people worked for a number of different employers over the course of their careers and, as a result, end up with several different pension pots. However, left in an old employer's pension scheme, your money is at risk from high charges and poor performance.
If you’re not comfortable tackling big decisions on your own, then this is where Seagate can help you.
An obvious remedy to this is to consolidate your old pensions into one easy-to-manage pension.

On the Campaign Trail with PSOE candidate for mayor in Pilar de la Horadada, Pilar Samper. In an exclusive interview with the Leader, PSOE candidate for mayor in Pilar de la Horadada, Pilar Samper, spoke of her excitement and ambitions, as she follows in the footsteps of the well-liked and much admired mayor Ignacio Ramos, as she leads the party into the Municipal Elections. How do you feel about taking over the candidacy of mayor following in the footsteps of such a popular figure as Ignacio Ramos? What encouraged you to do so? Of course it is a great responsibility but it is also a great honour for me to be the successor of a person as dear as Ignacio. As I have watched him work over many years, his advice, his manner, the direct contact that he enjoys with people regardless of their political persuasion, their creed or their colour, are all values that I also hold dear and that I want to continue with in the future. I know that I can work for all of the people of Pilar de la Horadada and continue building an efficient and successful municipality. What are your plans for the coming legislature? It is important that we are able to maintain continuity in projects that we have either in place or in the process of implementation during the coming term, continuity in our work and efforts for the
benefit of all residents.
Pilar Samper has been a longtime supporter of the expatriate community
We have a number of large projects earmarked for Pilar de la Horadada, projects that will help reduce seasonality, and create more jobs. What about the most important challenges that Pilar de la Horadada will achieve in the next four years? Of course we can’t look at the past and all the good works that we have accomplished, we need to move forward into the future. It is essential that we are able to complete big projects like the second institute and the fourth school. We also need to encourage the creation of new hotel beds as well as provide greater support for the businessman of Pilar de la Horadada. And we must also include Pinar de Campoverde. There are many challenges that we have set for ourselves that we are extremely confident will all be met.
knowledge and understanding of their traditions.
Will there be a councillor for foreign residents if you are elected as mayor?
What is the role of the foreign community that is resident in Pilar, and what do you propose to do in order to improve the integration of these residents into the social fabric of Pilar de la Horadada?
Of course there will. Practically 50% of our population is composed of foreign nationalities who need an individual, apart from the mayor, who will listen to their concerns, work on their behalf and provide them with the relevant information and answers to ensure their continued contentment in the municipality.
The role of foreign citizens in our municipality is very important. They do a magnificent job through their associations, they bring us cultural richness that we enjoy being part of. But it is important that we achieve a greater communication between them and the administration. There must be less formality and we must also achieve a greater
I will introduce a series of Informative lectures so that they know the structure and the functioning of the administration. This will enable them to better understand the processes and procedures that they must carry out. We will also make every effort to encourage as many foreign residents as possible to learn our language.

The New York organist, pianist and singer, Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles will fill the Almansa Park auditorium with soul,
Festival director, Alberto Nieto and the mayor, José Miguel Luengo funk and gospel, with their powerful live performance. Reminiscent of Sly & The Family Stone, the band features extraordinary voices and instrumentalists. There will be many other outstanding artistes including singer and pianist Tony Desare, the versatile Zenet who will present his new album "La Guapería", and Roberta Gambarini who, together with the pianist Fabrizio Bosso, will feature a tribute to the great trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who died in November 2018. The rest of concerts range between 15 and 25 euros. Outdoor concerts are free.
One of the problems that the foreign community has is with accessibility to public services, mainly because of the language issue. How can you improve their situation in this area?

Diocesan priests celebrate the Day of the Clergy Priests of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante gathered in the Orihuela Seminary to celebrate the Day of the Spanish Clergy on Monday, part of the festivity of San Juan de Ávila, patron of the clergy and Doctor of the Church. The company asked for a further 100,000 euro to purchase granite The mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, has terminated the 700,000 euro repair contract awarded in January to the company Aitana, because of spiralling costs. The company was engaged to refurbish the hydraulic complex of the historic Charles III Bridge that runs over the Segura River, as well as the dam and the old water wheel. The restoration work should have been completed last month but it has been held up for some weeks since the company asked for a further 100,000 euro to purchase high quality granite. Although there is no official documentation on the matter the Spanish press is that the company is willing to finish the work but not with the material originally specified. Meanwhile the anger of many residents is being publicly exhibited on social networks. The bridge, a Rojales landmark, and one of the most recognisable images associated with the town is a very important vehicle and pedestrian thoroughfare and the paralysis of the work is also affecting the surrounding streets, damaging many of the businesses located in the area. Aitana was also awarded the contract to build a new pool and refurbish the sports centre, work with it has also had problems in completing.

Tabarca joins 84 beaches and marinas that achieve a blue flag The Comunitat Valenciana is once again the Spanish autonomy with the largest number of blue flags awarded to its beaches in 2019, receiving 135 in total. There are also a further 15 marinas that have also been awarded the distinction by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC). Among the beaches regaining its flag is the island of Tabarca and Les Devesses in Dénia, while Altea has achieved a blue flag for the first time on the beach of l`Espigó.

The day was marked by the unveiling of a bust dedicated to the figure of the Servant of God Diego Hernández, who was a priest of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante and spiritual father of his seminary. The Day of the Clergy ended with a meal of fraternity and homage in the Seminary of Orihuela.

Phenomenal Praying Mantis can lay up to 300 eggs - in one sac! By Andrew Andrew Atkinson A PRAYING mantis egg sac was discovered in the garden this week - attached to a honeysuckle plant.
Monday 13th - Sunday 19th May, 2019 Praying mantis are highly prized in the garden due to their predaceous nature - against insects that plague plants. Praying mantis in the garden provide a safe, biological weapon to combat the summer’s onslaught of insects, eating flies, crickets, moths and mosquitoes. Praying mantis have a complex life cycle, which starts with cannibalistic mating and encompasses an overwintering egg period, followed by a nymph stage and finally adulthood. Praying mantis egg sacs hatch, emerging from their casings as temperatures warm in spring. May will see miniature baby praying mantis erupt from the sac. Females lay eggs on twigs and stems, walls, fences and house siding and eaves. The sacs can be difficult to spot, as was the case with me. What was phenomenal is that the fascinating praying mantis can lay up to 300 eggs - in one sac! Only about one-fifth of the nymphs will survive to adulthood, which makes the protection of the egg sacs important to preserve the next generation. The Praying mantis adult female lays eggs -before she dies. The sac is about 1 inch long, rectangular, with rounded edges and tan to white. The eggs are surrounded by a frothy foam which hardens into the casing. The foam is called ootheca. The nymphs look like miniature adults and emerge with voracious appetites, feeding in the garden. Over the last 13 years praying mantis have been visiting our garden in Los Montesinos, Alicante, but I had never discovered a egg sac before. An adult praying mantis was photographed in the garden in May, prior to discovering the egg sac.

WASPI : Women Against State Pension Inequality … International Group Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) is encouraging British expat women living in Spain, born in the 1950’s to join Waspi International. The Group is fighting for compensation in light of late or, in many cases, no notification of State Pension Age increases. The Campaign Group represents 3.8million British 1950’s born women, in the UK and living Overseas who have been negatively impacted by the mismanagement of increases to their State Pension Age. These changes were implemented by the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts. The Waspi Campaign has been fighting this injustice since 2015. The International Group has steadily grown its membership with 1950’s ladies joining the campaign who have relocated to Spain. The Waspi Campaign continues to gain significant momentum with support of cross party MP’s. There have been 7 debates in Parliament, protests and TV and Press exposure. Recently, the UN’s Special Rapporteur Philip Alston, visiting the UK said ‘As was made clear to me in a number of submissions and through powerful testimony, a group of women born in the 1950’s have been particularly impacted by an abrupt and poorly phased change in the State Pension Age of women from 60 to 66. The impact of the changes to pensionable age is such as to severely penalise those who happen to be on the cusp of retirement and who had well-founded expectations of entering the next phase of their lives’ The Waspi International Campaign is a ‘virtual’ group of 1950’s women utilising social media to actively campaign to achieve fair transitional arrange-
ments and compensation for all women born in the 1950’s affected by the changes. The Waspi Campaign is not just about money. The campaign is also about the fundamental trust between Government and ordinary people. The lack of communication from the Government to the women affected following the 1995 Pension Act broke the trust that had existed for generations.
Waspi is determined that the grave injustice to this specific group of women will be rectified and in doing so, we will reestablish trust and ensure future generations, including today’s young people do not suffer in the same way. To join and support the campaign go to Facebook: waspi international (ex pat 1950’s ladies fighting state pension changes)

Main image: Norma and Debbie, The Debutants. Left: Norma and Esteban in Los Montesinos.
JOINING the circus aged 15 is a teenage dream for many, performing to packed audiences in 'The Big Top' - that's what Norma Fernandez did! "I joined the circus as a teenager, aged just 15," reflected Manchester born Norma. "I was in the circus as an aerial ballet performer," said Norma, talking over a coffee at Bar Charly in Los Montesinos, Alicante, with husband Esteban. Norma revealed an early career in the circus was to be just the start of a star studded life in show business. After Norma's time in the circus she became part of a dancing duo with friend Debbie and travelled throughout Europe. "I lived in Casablanca, Morocco and also starred on a Moroccan television show, with Debbie," said Norma. "I first met Esteban while I was working with Debbie, singing as a duo, in the south of Iran, in Khorromshar, which today doesn't exist," said Norma. "After we finished the contract we went to work in Italy for nine months. It was only after, when we went to work in Beirut, that I met Esteban again, working with his band 'Esteban and The Debutants', in a very exclusive club called Venus," said Norma. Norma, who got married in Beirut, Lebanon, said: "It was beautiful. We played there - before the war - in a duet with Debbie." From a teenage circus dream to a star studded lifetime alongside Esteban, Norma's memories include that of Frank Sinatra in Tokyo, Japan, at the famous Copacabana club; to Sammy Davis jnr, Johnny Mathis, and Ike and Tina Turner. "After I had son Martin, Esteban got a contract with his new band 'The Latin American Boys' in Iran, and later we joined him there," said Norma. "When we finished the contract there we were caught up in the war and the Revolution. We couldn't get out. "Our hotel was surrounded by tanks. We were told we couldnt leave and remained there for thirteen days. There were tanks in the road - we were confined to our room," said Norma. "Thankfully arrangements were finally made to board a plane. One came - and we had five minutes to board and get out of Tehran - at 4am in the morning. "We were lucky that we managed to board a plane to Dubai - and safety," said Norma. Ironically their plight was on Bonfire night - November 5 and everything was on fire! Norma revealed she was also involved in a gunpoint incident in Turkey with Debbie - during the war - and being under a curfew: "One night a gun was pushed into our backs, but we were told we weren’t going to be shot!," recalled Norma." "We were told not to go out. We did it for the 'devilment' and told that we were very lucky!," said Norma.

Álvarez seeks devolved powers for Orihuela Costa and Entrenaranjos RESIDENTS, ASSOCIATIONS AND BUSINESSMEN gathered in Campoamor last Wednesday as Sofía Álvarez announced her plans for the creation of a platform that will ultimately provide financial autonomy for the Orihuela Costa and Entrenaranjos. The Orihuela Councillor for Tourism and Foreign residents said that she wants to establish an Entidad Local Menor, a Minor Local Entity that will allow the two areas a greater say in their own administration and the local management of their resources. After denouncing deficiencies in "health, infrastructure, the maintenance of roads, cleaning and the collection of waste," she said that to establish the Minor Local Entity will take about 2 years but once they have done so it will allow greater financial freedom from Orihuela, with the
group being allocated an agreed amount of the budget which it will then be able to assign independently of the Orihuela government. But first the Councillor said that there was a need for feasibility studies to be carried out which will quantify both the requirements and the deficiencies in Entrenaranjos and on the Orihuela Costa. She said that everything is in place for the studies to be undertaken by the Alicante and Miguel Hernandez Universities, and as such their conclusions would be watertight. "We are over 30 km away from the city which should strengthen our application," said Álvarez. “And the fact that the Orihuela government barely covers the basic needs of the area has long been a matter of public record,” she added The project will begin its journey on 6 June when it will formally establish the platform and elect its executive. The platform itself will be composed of 30 people of different" she said, and it will be "apolitical". The name will also be decided on at that time after which the group will meet on the first Thursday of each month when it will debate and agree on the measures to be taken. "It will promote ideas and

‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
It began with a dream.. “It began with a dream…” was the first chapter of my first book, which told the story of how my partner and I found ourselves living and working in the Costa Blanca and the Canary Islands after careers as teachers in the UK. Like so many expats before us, we needed a change of pace and lifestyle and some sunshine; Spain was beckoning. That was seventeen years and twelve books ago. It was a time when many Brits were seriously considering utilising the equity built up in a relatively modest property, or a pension payoff, to look at buying a good value property in Spain, France or other European destinations. The pound-euro exchange rate was very strong in those days, which made even a meagre UK state pension go a long way. Living and working in the European Union meant that visas and work permits were no longer needed. It had all become so very simple to start a new life in a country of choice, and gave many the opportunity to ‘Live their dream’. Time has moved on; Brexit has now become a large part of the concerns that present-day expats living in Europe are continuing to deal with. As a columnist and reporter, I regularly hear from many expats who share their concerns about the future. Issues relating to health cover, finance, employment rights, pensions and property are just some of the issues that continue to give many expats sleepless nights. Sadly, I know of some for whom the continual stress has been too much and they have become ill and have already returned

to the UK. For others, a return to the UK is no longer possible, because they are either too sick and reliant upon the Spanish health service, or no longer have the funds to be able to return to the UK. Spain, in particular, has a stated generous policy towards British expats during this challenging time, but much depends upon reciprocity with the British Government. Much also depends upon the government of the day; nothing is guaranteed or certain once the UK leaves the EU. These are issues that are likely to continue for years and far beyond the remaining lives of many expats currently living in Europe. Despite current challenges, the expat To give just one personal example of an dream will continue for many issue that many expats are beginning to face. Although we are strong believers in lives. Eight of the candidates of the Coalition formed by the three parties, Cambiemos OrihuelaC.L.A.R.O.-Unidas Podemos appeared before a large and enthusiastic audience at Restaurant Nacional in Orihuela Costa on 9 May. All candidates affirmed their commitment to a change of government in Orihuela and a new, more integrated but de-centralised Orihuela after the municicipal elections on 26 May. The head of the Coalition list, Carlos Bernabeu, remarked that the presentation occurred appropriately on Europe Day and in Orihuela Costa where a truly European population of Spanish and citizens from many European countries live side by side. But they had been too long ignored and lacked basic services like clean streets, proper
parks and gardens. Helene Akerman, the leading C.L.A.R.O. candidate, stressed that thanks to being highly placed on the Coalition list, she was the only candidate from Orihuela Costa on the list of any of the parties competing in the elections to have a good chance of being elected. She said that if elected, she would end the situation where Orihuela Costa with a third of the municipal population, did not have a distinctive voice in the Town Council. The interests of the coast had been ignored for many years. She would ensure that the coast would be properly defended so decades of neglect could be reversed.

Torrevieja Christian Fellowship is on the move
Monday 13th - Sunday 19th May, 2019 TORREVIEJA CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP (TCF) are excited to announce we are on the move!! The Church has been located in Torrevieja for over 30 years. However, rising rental costs have created the need for us to purchase our own building. Our current church in Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas has served us well, but after ten years we will be moving once refurbishment is complete, to Los Montesinos. The Church Officers signed for the purchase of a building in Los Montesinos on Wednesday, 17th April 2019 for conversion into a new church at Calle Daya Nueva 12, Poligono Ind. Levante II, 03187 Los Montesinos. Our last Service at TCF Torrevieja will be 10.30 am on 19th May 2019. Sunday Services from May 26th will temporarily be held at El Nacional Grill Restaurant, Punta Prima while our new building is being refurbished. Said Pastor Chris, “My wife Helena and I are excited to see what God has done and brought to fruition in the past fifteen months. We as a Church have been on an amazing journey of miracle after miracle. Initial work necessary to convert the building into a Church, includes floor tiling, a suspended ceiling, lighting and electrics, fire safety and improved toilet facilities. We are trusting God to continue to provide all the finance and resources needed to complete the building work, so that we can continue doing the work God has called us to do in the whole region”.

Chris added “Our thanks to the congregation and friends of TCF in Spain and abroad, who have supported this venture and worked so hard to make this possible”. Said Church Elder Roy Newton, “We are all very excited at this purchase which means the new church will be accessible to English speaking people in a much wider area such as Quesada, Rojales, Benijofar, Algorfa, Los Montesinos, San Miguel, Orihuela Costa and farther afield, as well as Torrevieja.” Sheila Newton, one of the founding members of TCF added “To see us owning our own Church building now is the fulfilment of God’s promises to us made all those years ago.” If readers wish to attend a lively English-speaking church, the Sunday service starts at 10.30 am and includes ‘Kids Church’. A scorching week in the sun for our bowls players this week as temperatures soared. In the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division, there was a reversal of fortunes for Quesada Lancasters and Blenheims. Lancasters played San Miguel Cristians and unfortunately lost the match 11-0 points and 117-52 shots. While the Blenheims played San Miguel Moors and won the match 10-2 points and 93-66 shots Meanwhile in the VCL league Quesada Lions first match of the week was against Horadada resulting in a very creditable draw 6 points each with the Lions winning the shots 92-80. In the second match of the week they played Greenlands and again had a very creditable draw 6 points each, this time winning the shots by just one 89-88. This puts them in second place in the league - keep up the good work Lions!! Members finished the week on a high with our presentation evening on Friday night at The Club, Quesada, with entertainment, a hot and cold buffet and lots of dancing. Congratulations to all of the

CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE THE 2019 NATIONAL BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS Following the parade of clubs, umpires and Spanish International players, the owner of the Emerald Isle, Seamus Moran, handed the rink over to Spain National Director Bob Donnelly who then went on to welcome the bowlers and all of the guests and spectators to the championships. He gave particular thanks to the tournament sponsors Línea Directa who were supporting the championships for the fourth year. He said how delighted he was to have such a major international company endorsing the 2019 tournament. He added that the only way that the relationship would continue in future years would be by bowlers and clubs supporting the sponsors, or at least offering them an opportunity to compete, when purchasing insurance or funeral cover. A spokesman for Línea Directa wished all of the competitor’s success in their efforts, as everybody looked ahead to yet another successful tournament. The National Anthem was played after which the club owners delivered the opening bowls of the 2019 tournament. Players, spectators and sponsors then retired for refreshments, laid Mel O’Dell demonstrating the finer points
Monday 13th - Sunday 19th May, 2019 on by the Emerald Isle, and a period in which they were able to psyche out the opposition before the competition got underway on Saturday morning with the Mixed National Fours. Today, Monday 13th May, the tournament moves across to Greenlands Bowls Club who are acting as co-hosts during the 2 weeks of the event in which, at least for the successful competitors, there follows an arduous fortnight of bowling, while for those not so lucky there is always the opportunity to renew old acquaintanceships and to make new friends. The tournament runs until 25th May at both the Emerald Isle and Greenlands Bowls Clubs where entry is absolutely free with, on most days, the two sessions starting at 10am and 2pm. The full schedule and daily results and updates can be found on the Spanish National Bowls facebook page. With the rounds completed, the quarter finals, semi finals and finals will all be played at Greenland’s Bowls Club from 24th May onwards, with the presentations and the closing ceremony also taking place at Greenlands on 25th May. The two Blue Ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies Singles, get underway during the second week of the tournament with Mary Dyer and Ian Kenyon hoping to retain their titles, although they will both have to do so using the new round robin format which will be used throughout the competition. Although the first lawn bowls club was opened on the Costa del Sol in 1981, at the Las Palmeras hotel complex the sports didn’t really

take off on the Costa Blanca until the mid-eighties when Javea Green opened, closely followed by Benitachell and El Cid. In Spain it was officially recognised as a national sport in 1986. The first local club was La Siesta which hosted it’s first bowlers in 1988. However, despite the recognition of the sport in 1986, it then took until 1994 before the first National Championships were held, at Miraflores Blows Club in Almeria. Over the next two weeks, at the Emerald Isle and Greenlands Bowls Clubs, the players are now competing in Tournament 25.

LaMangaTorre CC win over Madrid By Andrew Atkinson
LaMangaTorre CC gained a three wickets victory against Madrid 1st in the opening game of the 2019 season in the 1st division of the ECCL. "It was a great start to the season - the victory was one that the whole team contributed to," LaMangaTorre CC captain Kieran Wood told The Leader. LaMangaTorre CC won the toss electing to bowl. S. Khan opened the bowling, with Connor Wood taking a wicket in the first over, following good work from T. Knowles, when quickly reacting to a loose ball. The opening Madrid batsmen were left in the middle of the wicket, with some chaotic running. The third over of the innings saw another mix up between the wickets, when the ball was hit straight to J. Kinsella at mid off, with a nice throw seeing the batsman short of the crease. S. Khan kept the pressure high, giving the batsmen very little space to get the ball away. An attempted big shot from no.3 D. Bloch saw J. Kinsella in the game again, taking a nice diving catch at mid off, 34/3 in 7 overs.

A bowling change, bringing C.Rumi and R.Maini into the attack, proved rather costly, as loose bowling and tactical batting pushed Madrid to 82/3 at drinks break of the 20th over. Another 40 runs came in the following 6 overs. The breakthrough came when P. Singh came on to bowl, getting Suman to sky the ball to Long off, where J. Brook took an amazing catch above his head. 120/4 off 26 overs. Madrid's no.4 Tetlow had a stroke of luck, when skying the ball to 45, but was dropped; the single bringing up his 50. The partnership lasted 9 overs, before C.Wood returned to the attack - clean bowling Madrid's no.6 - ulimately bringing their downfall, with the remaining 5 wickets falling in 5 overs. Catches from K. Wood, P. Harvey and T. Knowles, with a run out to dismiss Tetlow, for a well earned 73, and a stumping in the last over, saw LaMangaTorre CC take all 10 wickets. C.Wood finishing 3-33 and S.Khan 2-16. Madrid racked up a score of 180/10 off 39.4 overs. LaMangaTorre CC were optimistic and very confident with the score. After the innings break, J. Brook and J. Kinsella went out and started solidly. Some tight bowling made it difficult to get the ball off the square. The pressure paid off for Madrid 1st - when a short ball hit J. Kinsella on the arm - causing him to lose balance. The ball raced away, with J.Brook running down the wicket, not realising his partner was down on the floor. A quick return to the non strikers end - even with a dive - couldn't stop him being given out; run out and walking back to the sidelines. After great performances in recent weeks, youngster C.Rumi kept his role at No.3 and built a nice steady partnership with J. Kinsella. The constant pressure on straight bowling saw the frustration build for J. Kinsella. A half hearted shot picked out a fielder at the covers nicely for a catch.
P. Harvey was in at 4 and the two men looked to building the score. They batted through to the drinks break at the 20 over mark, to rebuilt a platform of 79/2. After drinks, P. Harvey went aggressive, as he slapped the ball though mid-wicket for 4. The next ball he was beaten for height, as he chopped the ball kindly to point, for the loss of the team's 3rd wicket. G. Neve went in at 5 and continued to dig in and rotate the strike with C. Rumi, who was batting well, pushing the score to 38 with 3 boundaries to his name, before a Yorker clean bowled the youngster. S. Khan, in at no. 6, was caught at mid off trying to pick up the run rate. R. Maini went in at no. 7 with the score at 109/5 in the 30th over. G. Neve tried to go big, and, with the cross wind slowing the ball up, was caught at long off. K. Wood came in to help R. Maini and the two batsmen took advantage of the fielding decisions, taking a run every ball, with some two's included. A good over from R. Maini, hitting 13 runs, turned the game around once again. In the 34th over - after a mistimed shot landed nicely to short mid-wicket - walked out, scoring 22. T. Knowles came in at no. 9, needing 35 runs, from 5 overs. The two batsmen ran every ball. A boundary from K. Wood, and T. Knowles hitting a 6, changed the game dramatically. LaMangaTorre CC needed 10 runs from two overs. Some cool headed and sensible batting saw them score 8 from the over, leaving two runs to win from the last over. T. Knowles hit a single off the first ball of the over, to tie the scores up. Nerves saw K. Wood get hit on the arm, from a short ball, but the nerves also got to the Madrid bowler, with the penultimate ball given as wide! *LaMangaTorre CC's next fixture is May 18 against Madrid 1st in a T20 League fixture.

'Home James' - Cristiano Ronaldo could have been at the wheel of a three wheeler RELIANT ROBIN! CRISTIANO Ronaldo could well have seen himself behind the wheel of a three wheeler RELIANT ROBIN - if he had been playing football in a different era! Juventus, former Manchester United and Real Madrid, Portuguese international star Ronaldo is reportedly the owner of a £9.5m (11m euros) Bugatti La Voiture Noire - the most expensive car ever built. Turn the clock back and you would see players driving a three wheeler Reliant Robin from the training ground! Talk about 'Only Fools and Horses', aka Del Boy, where he used to drive a Reliant Robin in the tv legendary show. Gary Peters, formerly of the famous 'Crazy Gang' team at Wimbledon, that included players in the calibre of Vinnie Jones, revealed to me the time he had a Reliant Robin - that he had painted yellow! Peters was at Aldershot when he was told to paint the walls of the players dressing room by the manager - and decided to give his Reliant Robin a lick of paint too! "I had the job to paint the players dressing room, and, when finished I had some paint left over," said Peters. "So I decided to paint my Reliant Robin car!," said Peters, 64, exboss at my home city club Preston; Exeter and Shrewsbury, who

The greens ran true, but a tad on the slow side, but soon to be hollow tined The scoring was quite high for this course with 4 players hit or exceeded their handicaps of which one player scored a remarkable 41 points. As ever, we kick off with the scratch card and the delighted lady who stepped up to collect 20€ from Captain Ernie was “Fraulein” Gabi Middleton. The other 20€ slips into the Society funds, so thank you to those that cough up 2€ every week. At La Serena, we run a little ‘fun game’ where players donate 1€ and offer a guess at the number of balls that will be lost and only 1 didn’t enter, so there was 16€ in the ‘pot’ and this was topped up
played at Aldershot, Reading, Fulham and Wimbledon, making over 400 career appearances. Leeds United players also drove a Reliant Robin - in yellow. Picture this: a yellow Reliant Robin in the club car park, amongst the footballers' latest Ferraris and Porches, in the heady days when Leeds played Champions League football. Leeds players, deemed by teammates as 'Plonker of the Week', for being the worst trainer, an honorary joke, had to drive a Reliant Robin. The 'Plonker of the Week' was bestowed on Leeds players, including Iain Harte, David Batty, Alan Smith, Dominic Matteo, Gary Kelly and Nigel Martin, of which players' signatures donned the Reliant Robin! The original 1978 Reliant Robin used at Leeds was vandalised, with windows smashed and roof damage, being replaced with a Rialto 1983, signed by the then Leeds first team 'Plonker of the week', with 14 autographs! At the turn of the Millennium, Portsmouth players too were forced to drive home in a Reliant Robin - after training sessions - if they hadn't put in a 'full shift'. The Pompey players clubbed together to buy a three wheeler Reliant Robin, with one of the players forced into the driver's seat being former England and Portsmouth goalie David James - Reliant Robin David James! 'Home James', indeed! 'Plonker of the week'.
to make it an even 20€ and the guess of 63 by Sammy Tumblety was very shrewd as the actual no. was 62. Sammy was all smiles and 20€ richer. As most of you know by now, we have introduced a further prize of a NTP (In three shots) to the easiest Par 5 of the course on the day and this was the Par 5 11th and it was new member Rob Thomas who took home a bottle of McCafferty’s finest for his effort. He also took home a bottle for his NTP on the 9th. Other recipients of a fine bottle of delightful plonk for their NTP’s were Tom Finn, Evelyn (Happy in Red) Courtney and finally Ciaran “Living the dream” Twomey. Papa brace ends Torry losing streak CD Thader ................1 CD Torrevieja.............2
This local derby between 2 towns some 15 kilometres apart, gave the visiting fans something to cheers about at long last. A gap of 17 games separated Torrys last victory at Villena early last December, and this latest 3 pointer.
At start of play, 6th place Thader must have been quietly confident that they could improve on the 2-2 draw achieved at Nelson Mandela stadium, but how wrong they were. A sense of urgency, not seen for some time, from a determined Torry outfit, kept them in good stead, culminating in a victory they just about deserved.
When Thales shot agonizingly wide inside the opening minute, it looked as if Torry were determined to avoid finishing bottom of the league. It didn´t take long for Thader to show their pedigree, courtesy of Captain Lloyd heading just over from a corner on 3 mins. A minute later, a careless pass out of defence allowed Javi a free shot on goal, but he blazed the ball high and wide. A speculative cross from Luis, was almost turned into his own net by Thader defender Hector on 20 mins. Thader were riding their luck, when shortly afterwards Lloyd appeared to upend Diego, but the ref seemed unimpressed. Ruben intercepted a loose pass by Jumu on 33 mins, but with just keeper Eneko to beat, the Thader striker surprisingly shot embarrassingly wide of the far post. Some 5 mins later, Thader were made to pay for this miss, for although Papa´s initial shot was well saved by keeper Miki, Torrys lanky striker made no mistake from the rebound. Torry felt hard done by on 48 mins, when Hector appeared to take Thales legs from under him,
but once again the man that mattered didn´t quite see it that way. It took a truly magnificent reaction save by Miki to deny Papa doubling his tally, following his powerful headed effort from a corner. Thader leveled the score on 58 mins, a Pedro assist found Quino, who beat the offside trap before sliding the ball under Eneko´s diving body. Papa was looking a constant threat, only denied another certain goal when Miki dived bravely at his feet. Although Thader were shooting on sight, their accuracy was very poor, whereas Torry´s Thales was unlucky to see his lobbed effort sail over the keeper before being cleared off the line. The deadlock was eventually broken on 80 mins, an inch perfect assist by Matias finding Papa, allowing him time to compose himself before calmly planting the ball under the advancing keepers body. Another local derby awaits Torry next weekend, the ultimate match of the season. Almoradi are scheduled to visit Nelson Mandela stadium on Sun 19 May at 5pm, but it is advised to check the club website for confirmation.
