Councillors go without pay after Plenary defeat Plenary defeat means Orihuela councillors will work without salaries Almost two months after the Municipal elections were held, Orihuela mayor, Emilio

Bascuñana called an emergency plenary last Monday to agree councillor salaries and appointments as well as the appointments and salaries of their assessors and government advisors.

The Mayor's proposal included a salary of 61,537 gross euros per year for himself and 48,350 for his councillors but following the presentation of his recommendations the motion was defeated by the

opposition, consisting of Ciudadanos, PSOE and Cambiemos who all voted against the motion while the 2 members for Vox abstained. Continued on Page 02

Ciudadanos, which was the main hope of the government team in getting its proposal approved, voted against "because it does not seem logical that we talk about salaries without having first formed a proper government, the model that the city wants," said spokesman José Aix. The Socialist spokeswoman, Carolina Grace, defended the vote of her group saying that the salary increases were "quite disproportionate" insisting that the mayor "must move from his position and bring a salary proposal that improves the conditions of the opposition councillors as well". Meanwhile, the spokesman for Cambiemos Orihuela, Carlos Bernabé, said that "to be good representatives, we have to be representative" so he asked the mayor for a proposal that fits more "to the needs of the people we represent” Following its defeat Orihuela continued as the only Municipal Council in the entire Vega Baja still to formally appoint it’s team and allocate their responsibilities a month after it was first invested. The spokesman for the government, Rafael Almagro, has said that it was an "attempt to block the PP government" adding that they would be back with a new proposal shortly. However, following the defeat Bascuñana decided to allocate council roles to his eight councillors regardless of the plenary vote. After two months, during which time the municipal departments have been left to their own devices, and his elected PP colleagues have become increasingly frustrated with his lack of action, the mayor has finally ‘divided the spoils’ despite the fact that councillors will be required to work without drawing a salary, as a result of the plenary defeat. The share out comes notwithstanding the public announcement made by his right hand man, Rafael Almagro, that the mayor would maintain a conversation with Ciudadanos regarding a coalition government. Bascuñana has decided to take the initiative on the eve of Las fiestas de la Reconquista, one of the main public celebrations of the year.

Maintenance and Works, Parks and Gardens, Water and Lighting. Sabina Goreti Galindo, will assume responsibility for Finance, Heritage, "Large Projects" and New Technologies. María Dolores Rocamora will have Festivities, Tourism, International Residents, Health and Safety and Statistics. Dámaso Aparicio, the only one has not been granted more powers will retain Urban Cleansing, Environment, "Transparency" and Beaches. He loses Markets. María Teresa Sánchez Cánovas will assume responsibility for Social Services, Immigration, Citizen Participation and Equality Víctor Bernabéu, will manage Sports, Commerce, Markets, Industry, Energy and Development. José Galiano Moreno will look after Health, Agriculture, Transport, Youth and Education. CONCILIAT CONCILIAT ORY ORY NOTE Following the announcement of council appointments by the mayor there was conciliatory note from José Aix who said that the allocation of responsibilities "seems normal to us". "After a month as mayor, it is normal to allocate the delegations and we understand that Orihuela needs this decision, it is correct," he added. Aix also said that he hopes that the step will not influence the conversations between the two parties. “It will depend on the will of them [PP], for us it is not a problem, we understand that the mayor has done what he had to do. We will have to see if he wishes to continue communicating with us or, on the contrary, decides to remain in his current state of minority”. The statement by the leader of Ciudadanos would seem to keep the door open to a coalition administration which Bascuñana simply has to achieve if his party is to continue in government.

So the government team will now begin their work, without pay or advisers/assessors, and in a clear minority, just nine councillors from a chamber of 25. RESPONSIBILITIES: The mayor will retain responsibility for Contracts, Protocol, Institutional Relations, Security, Human Resources, and Internal Government.

Maria Dolores Rocamora, the new councillor for Foreign Residents, attended the recent Armed Forces Day

Rafael Almagro, the deputy mayor, will manage Historical Heritage, Communication, Culture, and Planning.

Thousands honour la Virgen del Carmen in San Pedro Last Tuesday San Pedro del Pinatar celebrated one of its most important and traditional festivals, the pilgrimage by land and sea in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, in which fishermen and the faithful, accompanied by thousands of residents and visitors, move the icon from San Pedro del Pinatar to Lo Pagán.

López Miras, the mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, and the Senior patron of the Fishermen's Association, Jesús Antonio Gómez, led the land procession, along with representatives of the Virgen del Carmen Association and other civil and military dignitaries.

The festivity, the celebration of which dates back 127 years, began at 7am on Tuesday morning with a procession through the streets of San Pedro del Pinatar and then Lo Pagán, followed an hour later by the traditional mass in the Plaza de la Constitución, officiated over by the parish priest of San Pedro, Fr Roberto Burgos.

The traditional 'tronaera', announced the entrance of the Virgin in the Port of Lo Pagán, thereby ending its journey over land.

In spite of the intense heat, hundreds of people took part in the pilgrimage that left from San Pedro Apóstol church at 9am to the port of Lo Pagán, making stops along the way at many of the public altars established along the route and where the hymn the Salve Marinera was sung, the song of the seas and also the anthem of fishermen and of the Spanish Navy. The acting president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando

The boat Adelina, skippered by Juan José Pardo López, of the fishermen's association of San Pedro, was commissioned to carry the image of the Virgen del Carmen during her journey through the Mar Menor. The Virgin was escorted by hundreds of fishing and recreational boats, extensively decorated for the occasion and full of worshipers who, after a traditional prayer, threw carnations into the water in memory of those who had died at sea. After the commemoration, la Patrulla Águila, the Eagle Patrol from San Javier Air Academy, joined the celebration with a spectacular acrobatic display over the 'Star of the Seas'. The fish market then held a mass in honour of the Virgin, before she was transferred to the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Lo Pagán. The day ended at dawn on Wednesday morning with the procession back from the parish of Lo Pagán to San Pedro del Pinatar.

Legion D´Honneur for D Day hero

Joe on the right with his guest, Bill Laverick, President of the Royal Air Forces Assn, Costa Blanca

Tuesday 9 July 2019 was a very special day for local veteran, Joe Billet, resident of Quesada and member of the Royal Air Force Association, Costa Blanca. Joe, a young man of 17 years, was one of the heroes of the D-Day invasion forces on Gold Beach, Normandy. For this and his subsequent wartime service, Joe was awarded the Legion d´Honneur and made a Chevalier of the order. The award ceremony took place at the French Lycee in El Campello, with the medal presented by Colonel Xavier Toutain, the French Defence Attache from the Embassy in Madrid. Joe was accompanied by his partner Rose Lyon and his son James. His invited guests were Bill Laverick, President of the Royal Air Forces Association, Costa Blanca and his wife Pauline. Colonel Toutain gave a short speech about the history and significance of the Order, creat-

ed in 1802 by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and followed with an account of Joe´s military service and the award of numerous campaign stars. Joe replied with a speech of thanks, in which he expressed his love of France, emphasising the warm welcome he had always received from the people of France at D-Day remembrance ceremonies, and particularly this year in Bayeux Cathedral. The medal was then pinned on to Joe who was congratulated by the numerous digni-

taries present, both military and civilian, including officers from the Spanish Navy and the Guardia Civil. A special guest was the French Consul from Alicante. A champagne toast then followed, to close the ceremony. Footnote: Coincidentally, Pauline Laverick´s father, William Binding, was also on Gold Beach as a Royal Navy Cockswain on a landing craft ferrying troops before his landing craft was sunk by gunfire.

Jaime Lloret announced that "the municipality will also have a helipad emergency landing area, which will be used by all of the emergency services, firefighters, health emergencies, police or Red Cross. He said that the intension is to establish a total of 12 helisurfaces throughout the province and one of which will be in Pilar de la Horadada ". The Mayor said that such a facility was important to the municipality due to the increase in population that Pilar de la Horadada records during the summer.

Ciudadanos demand Local Police Station in La Mata. The establishment of a permanent local police station and the authorization of a PROP (Citizens) office in La Mata are the two latest demands made by the C’s spokeswoman, Pilar Gómez Magán.

The fire service is provided by Civil Protection throughout the year but is usually reinforced during the summer season in areas where there is a high risk.

The cause of the accident and the reason for the boat overturning are currently the subject of a police investigation.

The councillor has written a letter to the Mayor requesting the opening of a permanent local police station in La Mata and the establishment of an office of the PROP in the local town hall. She says that the requests have been made following complaints that Ciudadanos has received from residents and tourists in La Mata regarding the lack of security and permanent police patrols in this area of ??the city. They say that it is absolutely necessary that the town has a permanent checkpoint of the local police and a patrol that guarantees urgent assistance, especially in summer when there is a large influx of visitors to the area. The councillor has also asked the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón to open a PROP (Citizens) office in the La Mata town hall to avoid people having to travel into the centre of Torrevieja for the completion of administrative procedures that could be dealt with locally.

Man dies after overturning his boat at Cala Capitán A 62 year old man died on Tuesday afternoon after he fell into the sea at Cala Capitan. He was one of five people who were sailing just off the shoreline in a 5mtr long rented motor boat out of Torrevieja. The exact circumstances are currently unknown but the boat overturned throwing all 5 occupants, believed to be related, into the sea. One of them, a 62 year old male, was severely affected taking in large quantities of water. However a rescue team was able to pull him from the water following which a SAMU paramedic performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation during which the mad showed vital signs of life. He was immediately transferred to the University hospital Torrevieja but he later died in the hospital. The family rented the boat in Torrevieja, which, because of its limited power, doesn’t need to be manned by anyone with sailing credentials.

Local Police arrested two men on Sunday following the theft of two high-end vehicles valued at 220,000 euros from the Marina in Cabo Roig. The men are said to be of Belgian and Albanian nationality The thefts occurred on Sunday afternoon when a man looked on as two people stole his Maserati, a high-end car valued at 220,000 euros, which was parked in the Port of Cabo Roig. He quickly notified the port authorities, who in turn gave notice to the Local Police. It was also found that they had taken a Porsche at the same time. A nearby police patrol saw the two high-end vehicles on the N-332, but after giving chase the two sportscars accelerated and lost their police pursuers.

The Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez Sánchez, met the team of firefighters last week who will be covering emergencies in the municipality during the summer months. He was accompanied by the Councillor for Public Safety, Marina Sáez, and the Provincial deputy of Emergencies Jaume Lloret The service will be provided for 12 hours a day, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., between 15 July and 15 September, and will consist of a corporal and three firemen with a tender and a support vehicle. The City Council will also provide a fire tender with a capacity of 3,000 litres that was recently acquired at a cost more than one hundred Mayor José María meets the fire crew The 220k Maserati Given this fact, the other patrol decided to completely cut off the traffic of the N332, leaving the two vehicles immobilized and proceeding to arrest the drivers who opposed great resistance. A second patrol was notified further along the N-332 which immediately closed the road, bringing the two vehicles to a halt at which point the two drivers were arrested despite offering some resistance. The detainees, an Albanian and a Belgian, are said to be part of an organised ring that steals high end vehicles to order. Both are now in police custody awaiting an appearance before the courts.

REIKI . . The wonderful energy of our universe INTRODUCTION There are as many paths to enlightenment as there are people. Reiki is one of those paths and each person who practices it will walk the path in their own way. No one person owns it – it has been given to all of us as part of the essence of our human being. Reiki is primarily perceived as a practice for healing the body, but it is also a method for healing the mind and spirit. Ultimately, Reiki has the power to reunite the trinity of Mind-Body-Spirit in their optimal state of harmony. All of us need to start the process of returning to that state of harmony. Reiki, with its power and simplicity and its methods for healing both the self and others, offers the way to start taking what I call the “the journey home” THE MEANING OF REIKI Reiki is one of the most ancient healing methods known to mankind. It originated in Tibet and was rediscovered in the early 1900’s by a Japanese priest named Dr Mikao Usui. The tradition of Reiki is referred to 2500-year-old writings in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. The Usui system of Natural Healing, named after Dr Usui, has been passed down by Reiki Masters since that time and is today practiced worldwide. As humans we have Universal Life Energy all around us and within us. The Japanese word Reiki consists of two syllables: “Rei” which describes the cosmic, universal aspect of this energy and “ki”, which means the fundamental life force flowing and pulsating in all living things. This life force energy is given to us at birth. We bring with us a certain amount of “ki” to life, and we use it up in the business of ordinary daily life. We then have to create a daily supply of new energy. When we are unable to make up for the energy consumption for a prolonged period, we may become physically or emotionally ill. If our supply of life force energy is very low and depleted, we suffer from physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, and tend to be much more irritable, bad-tempered and depressed than usual. WHAT IS REIKI? Reiki is a natural and simple healing method which allows you to absorb more life force energy. The Reiki method vitalizes your life force and balances the energies in your body. This natural healing energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the Reiki healer. The laying on of the hands directs the healing energy into the body of the receiver. The Reiki healer is used as a channel to conduct the Universal Life Energy. As a result, no personal energy is drawn or drained from the healer, who is simultaneously charged and strengthened. (The Reiki healer does not remove energy to give them theirs. Reiki energy balances and harmonizes – when there is an imbalance, there is a potential for illness) WHAT DOES REIKI DO? Reiki usually helps healing of all kinds and relieves pains and acute symptoms very quickly. Reiki makes it way to areas of imbalance during a treatment. It also has a positive influence on spiritual growth as it works on many levels, Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being are all enhanced with Reiki energy. After a treatment, you may feel mentally much clearer about things and experience deep insights into particular questions or problems you are facing. Reiki then can help you to make the right changes and decisions in your life, if that is what you need or want to achieve. Reiki affects each person differently, but it always acts wherever the receiver needs it most. However, there are common effects that everyone experiences. Energy used up in everyday life is replaced, so that when you feel exhausted or drained, the imbalance, which may adversely affect you physically, emotionally and mentally, can be put right. If you suffer from stress, you may react with physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, frequent colds, kidney pains and general disorders. These symptoms are the expression of excessive negative stress, accompanied by an imbalance of the energy system. To relieve these symptoms your energy needs to restored. For example, a lowered immune system or a weak organ that is not functioning properly and needs recharging with extra energy. Reiki can balance the energies in the body, helping you to let go and relax, so reducing stress. At the same time, it promotes the development of positive reactions to

See full article at www.theleader.info

stressful situations. In other words, not only the symptoms but also the causes can be healed. Reiki strengthens and harmonizes the immune system. We continually use up life force energy without replacing it. Reiki helps us to replenish and add to our energy and, in this way, helps to create a healthy body

Reiki is a simple technique anyone can learn. Most people experience a huge leap in personal growth after receiving the attunements. This feeling of such loving healing energy is a truly uplifting and empowering experience. I WAS TOLD THAT REIKI WOULD CHANGE MY LIFE. IT DID. IT WILL CERTAINLY CHANGE YOURS

IS REIKI ALWAYS SAFE? The purpose of Reiki is to supply the body with additional energy which it can use for healing itself. Reiki can be used safely regardless of whatever illness the receiver is suffering from. Reiki makes no diagnoses and is intended to be used as a complementary healing method. In the case of acute disorders such as imflammations, influenza, colds, digestive disorders, gall or kidney stones, backaches and headaches, Reiki often acts very quickly and directly by easing the pain and accelerating healing. Reiki can also be applied as first aid as it stops bleeding in open wounds and has a very calming influence on the nervous system, particularly when people are in shock after an accident. With Reiki, you can also provide relief from allergies, arthritis and other chronic disorders. As Reiki supports and complements other medical and natural healing techniques, you can combine it with other treatments, for example with allopathic or homeopathic treatments, body therapies, counselling and speech-therapy and other psychological treatments. A Reiki healer is charged with energy and becomes a channel for Universal Life Energy. Reiki is a gift of the universe, and is available to us all.

A REIKI BREATHING EXERCISE If you want to experience a “taster” of Reiki before committing yourself to Reiki attunement or just to allow yourself to get an idea of what Reiki may feel like, try this exercise. The exercise will have the same relaxing effects as Reiki but without the added power and impact provided by the Universal Life Energy through attunement. Make yourself comfortable, either sitting down or lying on your back and close your eyes. Pay attention to your breath and follow its rhythm. Notice how it flows in and out. Now take three deep breaths Now put your hands on your body wherever you feel drawn to or where you feel tension. Use your intuition to locate the spot in your body that needs relaxation the most. Now direct your breath consciously and repeatedly to this place. Imagine that your breath is the Universal Life Energy which flows through you. Let it collect and expand under your hands. Notice how a feeling of relaxation and peace gradually spreads from that place beneath your hands throughout your entire body After a short while (about five minutes) place your hands on another part of your body. Once again breathe into your hands during the whole exercise. You may find that your breath changes in some positions as the body stores memories and experiences which may now be awakened. It is not necessary to consciously probe feelings or initiate stronger breathing. Just allow yourself to let go and plunge into this feeling of flowing. Move on to two further places on your body and charge them with energy Slowly open your eyes, stretch yourself, and return to your normal daytime consciousness. You will feel more relaxed, calmer and more centred. If you would like to experience the wonderful energy of Reiki as a treatment, please contact CHRISTINE QUINLAN ON 966 795 103 or email me on bodyharmony44@gmail.com

THE EFFECTS OF REIKI In summary, Reiki is all-embracing in its effect. It involves your mind, body and soul and then attempts to set all these aspects of your being into a harmonious balance. Your personal energy, as a giver, is not transmitted to the receiver during a treatment, you are merely a channel. If (without having attuned to Reiki) you try laying your hands on someone else, energy is still passed on, but at a much lower intensity than if you are attuned to Reiki. This is because Reiki is a highly powerful vibrating force, or light energy. While the Universe Life Energy flows through you, as the giver, during the treatment, it is also fortifying and harmonizing you at the same time. You may also experience Reiki as a force which brings you more closely into contact with yourself, opening you up and allowing you to be more loving with yourself and with others. It is a unifying force which brings you closer to a condition of oneness and connection with the “whole” So let me summarise the many benefits: Balances the organs and glands and their bodily functions Releases blocks and suppressed feelings Promotes natural self-healing Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver Balances the energies in the body Enhances personal awareness and helps meditative states Relaxes and reduces stress Promotes creativity Strengthens life force energy Treats symptoms and causes of illness Heals holistically Strengthens the immune system Relieves pain Clears toxin

their blankest, displayed their wares and continued with their illegal trade.

However their demands fell very much on deaf ears as they were refused permission to table their motion requesting urgent action from the council.

Two Police officers do often patrol the Cabo Roig Strip during the early evening, usually seeking the easy option of fining illegally parked cars, and during which time the materos sit in the adjoining alleys or on the N332 bridge, but no sooner do the officers leave than the ‘looky looky’ men return, remaining with their illegal goods and their drugs in increasing numbers until the early hours of the morning.

As the meeting was an Emergency Plenary and called only to deal with council salaries and appointments it was deemed not to be a regular council assembly, and as such the group was told that it was not in a position to take questions or submissions. Although the mayor was introduced to members of the Business Association on their arrival, promising further discussion at the end of the meeting, the subsequent defeat of his motion saw him leave the council chamber without any further discussion taking place. However, Association Spokesman Pedro Mancebo was able to speak at length when interviewed by local tv and radio channels. He expanded on the problems faced by Cabo Roig traders on a daily basis which is likely to heap even more pressure on the authorities to resolve the problem. On the Cabo Roig strip itself many of the restranteurs and business owners were advised by the Local Police to expand their terraces, adding additional tables and chairs on the areas immediately outside their establishments, thereby denying space to the ‘looky looky’ men. Staff in the Chinese supermarkets were told to display additional stock dumpbins and carousels across from their stores but no sooner had they done so than a group of the illegal manteros physically threw the containers back across the pavement and onto the Chinese forecourts, after which they calmly laid down

Mayor fails to attend promised meeting with Cabo Roig Business Association

Needless to say the police were not on hand to deal with the matter, which once again they have chosen to ignore, having first issued dubious advice which could have resulted in a major confrontation between the two divisions.

It is understood that the Association will continue in their efforts with at least dozen business owners submitting denuncia’s on the manteros to the Local Police in the last week alone. A spokesman told the Leader that the group also still intends to submit it’s question to the full Orihuela council which it will now do at the next Plenary Meeting.

Torrevieja Meanwhile in Torrevieja, where the problem of illegal vendors is also back on the city streets once again, the Local Police have authorised overtime payments to six officers who will patrol the seafront every night from 10pm to 2 am, an outlay of 700 euros a day. Previously the manteros would have been dealt with by the GRO, the Police Reinforcement Group originally set up in 2012 for this specific purpose, but the number of officers in the group has dwindled significantly in recent years and is said to no longer be able to deal with the problem. If they do resolve the problem, however, the vendors will simply move south along the coastline to Cabo Roig where their problems will be exacerbated even more.

‘Bye, ‘Bye, Brendan … During the 1990’s, the ‘Westmeath Topic’ ran a weekly slot entitled, “Under the Spotlight”. As the title suggests, somebody was interviewed and asked some pertinent questions that the paper’s readers might find interesting. One week I was ‘it’. The journalist asked the same questions of each interviewee. One of the questions was; ‘What quality do you admire most in others?’ ‘Honesty’ was nearly always the standard reply. When it came to my turn and I was asked for the quality I admired most in others, I had no hesitation in answering, ‘The ability to make me laugh.’ Down through the years and to this present day, I retain the warmest feelings for those who gave me a good old belly-laugh. This includes my friends, acquaintances and professional entertainers. Anytime I meet ‘blasts from the past’ and we start reminiscing and telling funny episodes (generally at each other’s expense!) I am reminded over and over that ‘laughter really is the best medicine. Then there are the professional ‘laugh makers.’ This is different, but the end result is still the same. Laughter reduces stress hormone levels and dispatches anxiety. It also improves cardiac health and lowers blood pressure. So you see, laughter really is the best medicine and we owe a lot to those who ‘treat’ us. Engaging entertainers like Paddy Cole, Tommy Tiernan and Noel V Ginnity are paid to make us happy – and do they ever! Columnists such as Michael Harding, Billy Keane and Paul Howard (Ross O’Carroll-Kelly) make us buy newspapers – for a laugh! I am sad today though and I cannot stop thinking about the loss of Ireland’s greatest laugh manufacturer. We are all the poorer for the passing of Brendan Grace. There will be no encore this time. Brendan has ‘exited stage left’ for the last time. The king is dead … There is more to humour than telling funny jokes. In the written word we can paint the picture in our mind, but on stage or TV the guy has to have something special. Timing of delivery, body language and above all, facial expressions make or break the performer. Brendan told funny stories alright. He told some of the same ones

over a lifetime. There are very few comedians who can make you laugh as heartily on hearing a repeated gag, but Brendan could. The guy just ‘had it.’

‘Bye, ‘Bye, Brendan

Brendan Grace was the star of an amazing range and types of shows on both sides of the Atlantic. His role in ‘Father Ted’ won him a whole new generation of fans, but for me, it is his well-worn short sketches that are his greatest legacy. Off stage he never stopped being funny – nor simply being just a nice guy. A friend of mine met him in a hotel lobby as he was crossing with a pint of beer in each hand. “Now, that’s what I call a balanced diet”, quipped Brendan ‘Bottler’ never grew up – and thankfully never got sophistication or ‘sense’. Brendan knew his ‘Bottler’ character better than anything else he ever did. As I once heard him say in a radio interview; ‘Bottler’ was just an exaggerated version of my own school days.’ It is not easy to be loved and appreciated by your own parishioners. Joe Doan had that quality, for example. Brendan Grace had it with some to spare. He never forgot his roots and the people of innerDublin just loved him. What a send-off his own people gave him! Like thousands of other devotees, my favourite piece of all was Brendan doing the speech by the inebriated ‘Father of the Bride.’ I never tired of that one – and on this one more than anything else, it was the pose, the eyes darting around the guests, and the facial expression, from his opening slurred line of; ‘I want to thank you all for coming here at such short notice’, that kept us all in ‘stitches’. Many funny men will try to do that one in the future, but they should leave it be, because there only was one ‘father of the bride.’ The first time I heard Brendan Grace he was billed as a singer (and a very good one he was too). That was a long time ago. In the intervening years I attended many of his shows and watched them all on TV. Brendan never had an ‘off-night.’ Perhaps the greatest tribute he can be paid, is that he never resorted to bad language or smutty jokes. A lot of comedians I know could learn that one. ‘Bottlers’ school cap and blazer will never again come into focus under a spotlight. They may well finish up in a glass case in some

King in San Javier King Felipe presides over Passing Out Parade at Air Academy King Felipe and Queen Letizia were in San Javier last week where they presided over the commissioning of 99 new officers into the Spanish Air Force. The parade took place on the main Academy square where the students were formed up, as their family and friends looked on. The KIng, 30 years after his own commissioning at the hands of his father, King Juan Carlos I, in 1989, review the parade after which the military vicar general, the Reverend Juan del Río, carried out the reading of a prayer of thanksgiving in honour of the Virgin of Loreto, patron of the Air Force. The rest of us will remember all the laughter … and try hard to laugh again… Don’t Forget Happiness is a healthy mental attitude, a grateful spirit, a clear conscience, and a heart full of love. *Author, entrepreneur and newspaper columnist, Bernie Comaskey, now spends most of his time on a farm in Ireland; but he retains his strong links with the Costa Blanca. Balcony warnings for British tourists from Foreign Office In the wake of a series of fatal accidents that have occurred in Spain in recent weeks, many of them involving daredevil leaps or falls from balconies, the British government now includes a specific warning about ‘balcony falls’ in its official travel advice for people visiting Spain this summer. The warning reads: There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies. Many of these incidents have involved British nationals and have had a devastating impact on those involved and their loved ones. Don’t take unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs. Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when it happened. They also say that you should familiarise yourself with the layout of your hotel and accommodation block when you arrive, always following the safety advice of the hotel and/or tour operator if staying in a room with a balcony and watch out for friends who may be at risk. Meanwhile, The Mirror reports that tour opera-

BENIDORM WATERSLIDE ACCIDENT HAS BRIT ON LIFE SUPPORT

A 23 year old British man, David Briffaut, has suffered catastrophic injuries on a waterslide at the Aqualandia Water Park in Benidorm resulting in the severing of his spinal cord. David, a greenkeeper from Essex, was on holiday in Javea with his girlfriend Penny Bristow and another young couple of friends and just a couple of days before returning home the foursome travelled down the coast to Benidorm where they planned to spend the day in the Aqualandia Water Park.

tors have ordered hotels not to put guests in rooms where the balcony barrier is lower than 1.1 metres, or where there are gaps in railings that could be used for climbing. Francisco Gene, director of the Menorca Binibeca Hotel, said: "TUI and Jet2 rules mean no British guests can stay in rooms with balconies that don’t meet new height requirements.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are unclear although the Park authorities claim to have video footage which shows Mr Briffaut didn't follow the guidelines for the ride “Splash," so it is 'simply false' for some of the British press to suggest the ride is unsafe. A spokesman said that before opening the park each season, an external company makes an exhaustive review of all the slides, in addition to which park staff also check them every morning.

He added "Aqualandia has a long, 34-year history and safety is out top priority. Our rules and recommendations are clearly displayed across all the park and must be adhered to by our visitors." Meanwhile David is currently on life support in hospital in Alicante where he is expected to undergo further surgery, and once he is considered stable enough arrangements will be made to fly him home to the UK by Air Ambulance. David's mother Lorraine said: "We are living in every parents' nightmare. Our son went on holiday with his girlfriend and we have been told he might never walk again. All we can do now is pray that he can recover. He is getting excellent care, but we would like to bring him home as soon as possible.”

Europe curbs its appetite for the Alicante brick Figures produced by the València Notary School reports a drop of 6% in sales of homes to foreigners in the province in the first quarter of the year with Swedes, Norwegians and Belgians buying fewer properties while, rather surprisingly, purchases made by Britons are very much the same. After years of practically uninterrupted growth, the sale of homes fell from 5,565 operations registered between January and March 2018 to 5,246 this year. These are figures that corroborate what the statistics of the Ministry of Public Works have already anticipated. The logical thing would be to think that the uncertainty generated by Brexit would be behind the drop but the truth is, as the notaries' data point out that, at least in the case of the Costa

Monday 22nd - Sunday 28th July, 2019 Blanca , the inability of the British Parliament to agree on a negotiated exit from the EU does not seem to have affected the interest of its citizens to buy a second residence in the province, beyond the fall that occurred in 2016, immediately after the results of the referendum were known. Indeed, during the first quarter of this year, the number of operations has remained practically stable, with 1,021 purchases, just three more than during the same period last year. It is a slightly different story though throughout the rest of the European markets, with Sweden (35.6%), Norway (-19.6%) and Belgium (-16.9%) leading the way, but also Germany (-13.4%), France (-12.2%) and even the Netherlands (7.3%). For the vice-dean of the Notarial College, Delfin Martinez, this situation is logical if one takes into account that the sales of houses to foreigners have been growing almost continuously since 2011. "What we see is that the market is now settling which is quite normal after climbing a lot. At some point there is a plateau," he says. Alicante is still the province where foreigners buy more homes in Spain, with 21.73% of the total, that is, more than one in five.

Tributes as Monte star exits By Andrew Atkinson

Club mornings for social petanca are every Tuesday, when newcomers are welcome. The club is situated within the grounds of Restaurante El Paraiso, N332, Guardamar. For the forthcoming Las Salinas and Sunshine Radio winter leagues, Peacocks have entered 4 teams. Tributes have poured in following the announcement that CD Montesinos talisman striker Vazquinho has departed the Valencia 2nd Regional Group 8 club ahead of the 2019-20 season that kicks off in September. "Thanks for the memories Vaz - you made many a weekend a pleasure to be at the ground watching Monte," said club Treasurer Howard Yeats. A plethora of fans belonging to The Full Monte Supporters Club have been airing their views to me - on what is a sudden shock exit - even for the new club manager and new club President. "Manager Jesus Santander and club President Alfredo both spoke to Vazquinho and thought they had reached an agreement," revealed supporters club president Eddie Cagigao. "But he decided to join local rivals San Miguel. The club, and I'm sure the fans, would like to thank Vaz for his efforts at CD Montesinos, and we wish him well," said Eddie. One outstanding memory for me, was when Vazquinho held his newly born child in arms for a team photo shoot, before kick off during the 2018-19 season - then unexpectedly left me 'holding the baby' to take to his wife, in the stadium. Vazquinho, in what almost certainly looks like the curtain has finally come down on his love affair with the

El Plantio Singles Joker

SMGS at El Pantio. July 17th 2019 It has to be said that El Plantio is a course which divides opinion – some people simply won’t go having been let down in the past by poor condition and very high prices. Some people like the course lay out and are prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt especially at this week’s price of €36 including a buggy.

repeated in the gold category. Dave Gibson (29) won on countback to take 4th – Graham Temple playing off 3 looked like he was going to demolish the course but sadly faded to take 3rd with 30 - Phil de Lacy (31) 2nd and Robin Eastman (32) 1st to leap to the top of the order of merit.

Well, the course was a bit of a mixed bag – the greens have not long been tined and were generally sandy, bumpy and woolly – not to everyone’s liking. The rest of the track was good to middling with the fairways showing improvement since our last visit although some tee boxes are rather scruffy.

Nearest the pins – sponsored by The Property Shop - went to Nicklas Soderberg, Dave Alderdice (that one was very close), Dave Bishop and Kyrre Skarsmoen who was obviously showing off that he can hit the ball straight.

We decided to hold a quick vote amongst the players as to who would keep El Plantio on the fixture list and most said they would especially at the lower price. Anyway, on to the competition results. We had four guests this week with Kyrre bringing along some of his Norwegian chums – and didn’t they do well with cousin Nicklas Soderberg (29) coming second to Hasse Sorenson (35). Only two categories this week as we only had 25 members playing. In silver division Ken Flaherty (30) was 4th – Brian Mulligan (32) 3rd – Gerald Bannon (33) 2nd and Keith Little (34) 1st. All very close and the scoring on the low side – this trend was

Last of the runners up was Alan Maidment who won a nice bottle of red sponsored by Mike’s IPTV. There were 2 matches in the in-house matchplay league - Robin Eastman beating Norman Cahill 9 holes to 5 and Ken Flaherty beat Mick Roscoe 6 holes to 5 a close match. Our thanks to El Plantio for an enjoyable day. To find out more about SMGS visit our website www.smgs.org or give our Captain, Tony Smale a call on 639 129 223. Next week we’re at Vistabella, then Hacienda Riquelme and Las Ramblas the following Wednesdays. We would welcome guests at each event. This weeks winners in the above photo, Left to right - Kyrre, Norman, Dave, Robin, Hasse, Alan, Phil, Gerard, Brian, Å´Tony, Graham, David, Ken & Keith

Despite favourable conditions, El Plantio 2's Singles Joker competition failed to produce scoring that matched the weather. Usually, the winner manages to achieve a score over 40 points with two nominated 'Joker' holes scoring double points. Instead six of the nine players returned totals between 35 and 37 points. When the cards were returned, the 'winner', had 37 points. However, one card was noticed to be incorrectly added up both by the player and the marker, who is also a Mathematics Teacher in the U.K. The corrected card scored 37 points and won on count back. Nearest the pins – Hole 1, David Swann and Hole 6, Kenneth O'Brien. Third Place, Handicap 21, Kenneth O'Brien – 36 Points C/B. Second place, Handicap 10, Graham Blakeway – 37 points. Around and About the courses It would appear that whatever reason many of the local courses have decided that this summer and Autumn they will restructure their golf courses in some way and we have covered these periodically over recent week so it is probably prudent at this moment in time to provide a summary of such work, namely: Campoamor They will replace all 18 greens during the 5th August to the 15th October to eliminate the re-occurring problem of different grasses. Bonalba They are replacing greens 3 and 14 for exactly the same reason, mixed grasses with work scheduled for completion by 20/09/19. Font del Llop They are re-structuring the 9th green by reducing the height and undulations to give more pin positions plus raising the green side bunker and changing the water course of the stream and this work will take well into the Autumn and they have laid a good quality provisional green for use during this period. La Marquesa They had already re-structured the 10th &13th greens but now have additionally included the 8th &17th holes into the programme and have lifted and replaced the old 8th green and built a new green in close proximity and introduced a new par 3 green alongside the old 9th fairway, and again this work will be ongoing well into the Autumn. We will keep you update of changes as they occur. Spain World Superbike star Bautista's crash - memories of Valencia By Andrew Atkinson Spanish World Superbike star Alvaro Bautista's crash - his fourth in eight races - in the first World Superbike Championship race at Laguna Seca this month, brings back memories of him crashing in Valencia in 2002. "The crash at Laguna happened with no reason I'm putting it down to bad luck," rued ex-MotoGP ace Bautista. "I suddenly lost the front at turn 5 - and crashed out," said Bautista, ebbing towards the WorldSBK title, after chalking up 13 victories in 15 races. Bautista's form was underscored having won 11 consecutive races in the Ducati Panigale V4 R. Bautista's whirlwind in WorldSBK began to falter after a crash at Jerez - followed by crashes at Misano and Donington Park, the latter costing Bautista the series lead. Bautista, who had a 61 point lead prior to race two in Jerez in June, has dived 49 points behind. Bautista, 34, winner of the Madrid Minimoto Championship three times, competed in the 50cc Aprilia Cup in 1997, getting his first podium. In 1999 Bautista competed in the Movistar Activa Joven Cup, finishing in fifth place, earning him a second year in the Cup, as a back-up rider in the 125cc Spanish Championship. Injury in 2000 thwarted his season. In 2001 Bautista entered the 125cc Spanish Championship with Team Belart, that later ceased due to financial reasons; joining iconic, competing in the 125cc

Madrid ease to T20 win over LaMangaTorre CC By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC hosted Madrid United in the first of two T20 fixtures in Torrevieja - with MU getting a taste of playing on a Flicx wicket for the first time - but gaining an emphatic victory. A change in the LaMangaTorre CC team saw G. Neve take the captain's armband - winning the toss and electing to ball. "The plan was to ball first, and let the low bounce catch the away team by surprise," LaMangaTorre CC player Kieran Wood told me.

Spencer under the radar By Andrew Atkinson Jamie Spencer will be at the 2019 Glorious Goodwood Festival a little under the radar - with the focus on Frankie Dettori - the former flat racing champion jockey having won the Goodwood Cup twice!

Watch out for Jamie Spencer at Goodwood

Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, champion jockey in both Ireland and Britain, Spencer, has won four Classics. Alvaro Bautista 2002 Spanish Championship. In the season's last race at Valencia, Bautista set pole-position, going on to finish a disappointing fifth - after a crash - taking the runner-up spot, overall. Bautista made his international debut in the 2002 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season - a wildcard entry at Jerez, Catalunya and Valencia. Bautista competed in the 2002, 125cc European Championship, scoring a podium in Assen and a fourth place in Hungary. Bautista signed for the newly found Seedorf Racing Team in 2003, competing in his first full season in the 125cc World Championship, his best finishes being a fourth place at Phillip Island - and a sixth place at Valencia. Bautista won the 2003, 125cc Spanish Championship - with two races to go - scoring five consecutive pole to victory wins. Bautista's Laguna Seca mishap has left the Talavera de la Reina, Toledo born Spaniard undeterred: “That's racing - I will look ahead and not give in," he said. *In Part 2 of Alvaro Bautista's career, Andrew Atkinson races through 2004 to 2019, taking in his fastest lap at Donington; crashes, Grand Prix victories in Jerez and Japan, MotoGP 2010, and switching to World Superbike Championship racing in 2018. Connor Wood and T. Culshaw took the new ball and got to work, but it was the bowlers that were forced to work, when openers Akmal and Waheed adjusted to the pitch quickly - taking the battle to the bowlers. Wood going for 9 runs off three overs, before an expensive final over, following some under-par fielding, that took his final figures to 22 off 4 overs. Culshaw went for 12 off his first three overs, before claiming his first wicket of the year, at the cost of 9 runs. 8 overs: 44/1. A change of bowling saw debutee V. Vuneja replace C. Wood, and Pawitter Singh replace T. Culshaw at the other end. Initial loose delieveries from Vuneja, ended, when he claimed his first wicket for the team in his first over; whilst Pawitter Singh also struck in his first over. Score: 65/3. A two overs spell of 1-18 from V. Vuneja saw him being replaced for A. Court. P. Singh was changed for V. Vuneja, in a change of ends. A. Court was expensive in his first over - 12 runs recovering just conceding a single in his second over. V. Vuneja bowled his remaining two overs, with similar figures from the first spell. A change of bowling end with P. Singh replacing A. Court. A. Court replacing the bowled out V. Vuneja. The final four overs went for 30 runs, with A. Court claiming a wicket and P. Singh claiming two wickets, from two balls, in his final over. Madrid United scoring a respective 134/7. Darfaraz (22), Akmal (23) and Waheed (32) being the only batsmen to reach double digits.

Spencer, son of former National Hunt trainer George Spencer, landed the Goodwood Cup in 2015 and 2016. Can Spencer, who shocked the racing World in 2014 - when surprisingly announcing his retirement, before making a dramatic u-turn - take the limelight off Italian wonder jockey Dettori, especially on Ladies Day at the Goodwood Festival on August 1. "After reflection I decided not to retire and continue racing as a freelance, with a desire to continue to be successful," said Spencer, who won back to back Goodwood Cup wins on Big Orange. Spencer, who has ridden throughout the world, including Britain, Ireland, USA, France, Canada, UAE, and Germany, moved to England and became British flat racing champion jockey in 2005 - booting home 180 winners. Spencer has a CV that all jockeys would like in their saddle, having had major wins including the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Phoenix of Spain in 2019.

aged 17, the youngest jockey to win a Classic. Educated at Kilkenny College, Spencer was the champion apprentice in Ireland in 1999, notching up 46 winners. Spencer, who rode Brian Boru to victory in the 2003 St Leger at Doncaster, was Irish flat racing champion jockey when riding for Aidan O'Brien in 2004, with 93 winners. Spencer, who rode his 2,000 winner in British Flat racing in August 2017, heads for Glorious Goodwood under the radar. fromthehorsesmouth.tips has marked your card for Glorious Goodwood 2019 - in Jamie Spencer.

Ascot Gold Cup (Fame And Glory 2011) and the Epsom Oaks (Sariska 2009) come to mind, with Spencer up. Spencer will be a jockey to watch at Glorious Goodwood 2019; with rides for trainers including David Simcock, whom he rode for last year. Spencer has come a long way since winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas on Tarascon in 1998, Pawitter Singh finished 3-21 off 4 overs; V. Vuneja 2-35 off 4 overs, with A. Court (1-32). A quick change over saw G. Neve choose LaMangaTorre CC openers P. Fletcher and J. Kinsella. A good first over going for seven, without loss.

LaMangaTorre CC's Pawitter Singh took 3 wkts

Terror struck, when Hafeez came on to bowl at the other end, clean bowling J. Kinsella, first ball. T. Knowles went in at three, but was out second ball, after attempting a quick single to short midwicket, following the Madrid United player BOOTING the ball to the stumps! Good work from Hafeez saw him pick up a wide shot - knocking the bails off - before the diving T. Knowles could ground his bat. C. Hunt went in at four at the non-strikers end, ending in agony, as he could only watch P. Fletcher get bowled on the final ball of the over; wides being the only run score of the over, with the loss of three batsmen. G. Neve was in at five, and, after just 12 balls and nice shots, brought the game back. It was all in vein, with Neve caught out for 11 runs, in the fifth over. Score: 32/4. Chaos entailed around the camp as C. Hunt was next to walk - after more big shots paid off - shortly after mis- timing a shot, to mid-on. The batsmen crossed with A. Singh out next ball, lbw. Two new batsmen at the crease, in Pawitter Singh and V. Vuneja. A couple of singles emerged, until trying to score big, a pull shot fell short of

the boundary, landing nicely in the hands of the fielder. T. Culshaw was in at nine, but could only watch P. Singh play a shot to point, where unfortunately a good catch saw his innings end. C. Wood walked in at 10, facing one ball, before begining the walk-out, bowled. A. Court walked in at 11, surviving the remainder of the over. The following over saw the innings end with T. Culshaw bowled. LaMangaTorre CC all out 50 runs, from 8 overs and 1 ball. C. Hunt (18) & G. Neve (11) returning double digits, with five ducks in the line-up. Madrid United bowling figures: 1-28 Ahsan; 4-14 Hafeez; 1-3 Jumshed; 3-5 Itifaq. Madrid United returning a 84 run victory. *LaMangaTorre CC v Madrid United T20 second fixture from Torrevieja in next week's edition.

I gets my kicks out of you! - Sir Rod Stewart WORLD Exclusive COSTA Blanca and Costa Calida Leader reporter Andrew Atkinson reminisces Sir Rod Stewart's love of football in a World Sport Exclusive in an in-depth interview with former Scotland national team manager Craig Brown, OBE. "It is an honour to represent Manchester United," said Mata, in United's squad in Australia for summer fixtures, prior to playing in China and Singapore. "Manchester United are an amazing club," said Burgos born Mata, 31, who moved to United in a ÂŁ31.7m transfer from Chelsea in January 2014.
