CELEBRATING 33 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE The Civil War left scars on much of Spain’s social landscape, especially locally, in a corner of its municipality, and one forgotten by the City’s gov-
ernment.
Ring a bell for anyone?
Over 30 kilometres away from politicians who would not listen, the residents were abandoned to their fate, with little social or economic support.
Well in this case the subject of the article is Pilar de la Horadada which had long struggled for its segregation from the City of Orihuela, a
struggle that ended happily for the pilareños on July 30, 1986, beginning one of the most important chapter’s in its history. Continued on Page 02

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Segregation for Horadada Local residents felt the abandonment, first in agriculture and also in national tourism. They were tired of paying exorbitant taxes to an Orihuela that didn’t deliver anything in return. But now, 33 years on, the sustainable and unstoppable development that Pilar de la Horadada is going through is nothing but a reflection of the Pilaresian idiosyncrasy of a struggling and enterprising character that has been forged by the succession of historical events, in this case the struggle for segregation in this corner of the Mediterranean, which for decades was subjected to the abandonment of the municipality of Orihuela, as a district of its municipality. Pilar de la Horadada was neglected of its social and economic needs; it was never considered a place to invest. The people of Piñera paid exorbitant taxes and the infrastructure was minimal, if not almost non-existent: the sewage service did not exist, nor the lighting, nor many other first line services. In addition, the communications with Orihuela were also non-existent, a fact that made it even more difficult to interact with the City council, paralysing the development of both infrastructure and local business. Immersed in a situation with no way out, the people of Piñera, who have always been aware of the enormous economic potential of their lands, both for tourism and for agriculture, knew at that time the progress that the segregation of Orihuela would bring to the people. The first signs of a struggle for segregation are recorded in 1936 with a document signed by Ginés de Gea Sánchez. It was the beginning of a struggle that would take five decades before it would eventually succeed with the provincial and regional authorities. In 1957, the second document demanding municipal independence was presented to the City Council of Orihuela. This was subsequently appealed in 1963 by the Orihuela government because it did not recognise the legitimacy of the many thousands signatures of the people who appeared in it. The Oriolan Government ridiculous-
ly demanded that each of the signatories go to the Orihuela Town Hall to certify the signatures, a condition that was practically impossible to meet. Throughout these meetings, the Pilareña commission and Orihuela present their proposals for territory and for segregation. However, it was impossible for them to reach an as a result of which, the Ministry decided to prepare its own document. The brief prepared by the Consellería was presented on July 25, 1985 before the Council of State. However it was denied in March 1986 by the Generalitat Valenciana. This decision by the Autonomous Government caused a revolt that ended with the torching of municipal furniture, a general strike, regular road blocks of the N332 national highway, and many other local demonstrations. Of all these actions, perhaps the most emblematic, or the one that caused the most local fuss, was the boarding up of the local town hall, at which time Pilareños asked the policemen who were controlling the demonstration not to wear the uniforms bearing the coat of arms of Orihuela. With the aim of calming the revolts, on April 3, 1986, Orihuela City Council promised to invest 750 million pesetas in sewer and drinkable water. However, this did not satisfy the residents of Pilar de la Horadada and the demonstrations intensified until, on April 5, the police were required to use tear gas against the demonstrators. It was then that the Civil Governor of Alicante telephoned the President of the Generalitat Joan Lerma to propose himself as a mediator in the conflict between the pro-city commission and the conseller, in order to put an end to the conflict. However, even as late as July 26, 1986, the president of the Provincial Council was still assuring the media that segregation would not be granted to Pilar de la Horadada but on July 30, Emilio Sánchez Serra received a call which finally delivered the approved decree that granted the segregation of the 6,000 residents of Pilar de la Horadada. Since that day, the newly inaugurated Town Hall of Piñera decided that on every 30 July a party marking segregation from Orihuela would be celebrated.

When will Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre reopen? Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre is still closed with Mayor Eduardo Dolón still preferring not to specify when it will reopen its doors. However, now that he has in his possession the report recently completed by municipal technicians, detailing the cost of the repair and adaptation of its facilities, after four years of closure, he is in a far better position to make the necessary decision, and in so doing fulfil one of the main promises that he made in his recent municipal election manifesto. The report, which was released last Monday, is understood to say that the Theatre needs 80,000 euros in repairs and renovation of material and facilities to reopen. The previous government team said that it had already carried out the necessary repairs to reopen and guarantee safety and security - it invested about 40,000 euros; and that the only thing that prevented the reopening was the signature of the architect, which it was still necessary to obtain for the opening license: the Generalitat closed the theatre in September 2015 because it lacked that endorsement. But now Mayor Eduardo Dolón (PP) was able to explain the conclu-
sions of the new report which was commissioned by the councillor for Culture and which is said to identify the need for additional works at a cost of 80,000 euros before it can reopen. It would have been much more, he said but fortunately, during the period in which the Theatre remained closed, the maintenance of elevators, effluent pumps and fire extinguishers was maintained, but not that of scenic machinery, air conditioners, security systems, electrical systems and plumbing. He stated that he does not know how quickly these outstanding works can be carried out, although they will be processed as a matter of urgency. He said that most of them can be done through minor contracts - a simple procedure that does not require a formal tendering process for works under 15,000 euro. But even when completed the building will still be pending a completion signature for the end of work by the architect Antonio Marquerie, who was hired by Acciona, and who highlights that the building costs overran the original budget of less than six million to a final total of nine million. He refuses to sign and says that he will not do so until he receives the balance of his fee some 140,000 euros - that he considers he is still owed by the City Council, althoughcouncil says that the remuneration obligation is from the contracting company Acciona. The mayor, however, did not specify how City Council is responding to the legal claim of the architect for his outstanding fees,

Legion D´Honneur for D Day hero
Joe on the right with his guest, Bill Laverick, President of the Royal Air Forces Assn, Costa Blanca
Tuesday 9 July 2019 was a very special day for local veteran, Joe Billet, resident of Quesada and member of the Royal Air Force Association, Costa Blanca. Joe, a young man of 17 years, was one of the heroes of the D-Day invasion forces on Gold Beach, Normandy. For this and his subsequent wartime service, Joe was awarded the Legion d´Honneur and made a Chevalier of the order. The award ceremony took place at the French Lycee in El Campello, with the medal presented by Colonel Xavier Toutain, the French Defence Attache from the Embassy in Madrid. Joe was accompanied by his partner Rose Lyon and his son James. His invited guests were Bill Laverick, President of the Royal Air Forces Association, Costa Blanca and his wife Pauline. Colonel Toutain gave a short speech about the history and significance of the Order, creat-
ed in 1802 by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and followed with an account of Joe´s military service and the award of numerous campaign stars. Joe replied with a speech of thanks, in which he expressed his love of France, emphasising the warm welcome he had always received from the people of France at D-Day remembrance ceremonies, and particularly this year in Bayeux Cathedral. The medal was then pinned on to Joe who was congratulated by the numerous digni-
taries present, both military and civilian, including officers from the Spanish Navy and the Guardia Civil. A special guest was the French Consul from Alicante. A champagne toast then followed, to close the ceremony. Footnote: Coincidentally, Pauline Laverick´s father, William Binding, was also on Gold Beach as a Royal Navy Cockswain on a landing craft ferrying troops before his landing craft was sunk by gunfire.

Chamber of Commerce calls for abolition of tolls The Orihuela Chamber of Commerce considers the abolition of the AP-7 tolls at La Zenia and Los Montesinos a “priority”, and according to chamber president Mario Martinez an “absolutely necessary for businesses in Orihuela, the Vega Baja and all the coastal areas”. Mario Martinez has unreservedly shown his support for the initiative of the Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, who has proposed bringing together all the local mayors to demand the implementation of at least a soft toll for the residents in the ten kilometre section where the two local tolls are located. Martínez has gone further by insisting that the proposed meeting of mayors must also include the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce as well as all the business associations of the Vega Baja, (Asemvega, Jovega, OC Avanza etc), because all are working with similar goals as the regions of Alicante, Valencia and Madrid. For years the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce has demanded the abolition of the tolls in the AP-7. It did so, following a CLR motion in 2013, a motion
Chamber President Mario Martinez approved by the Town Hall, with the support of all the major political groups. In 2014 OC Avanza collected over 7,000 signatures in Orihuela Costa. This year the Chamber of Commerce presented the Uneix Plan to the Government. This was endorsed by the business groups that participated in its drafting and included the total abolition of these two AP7 tolls to favour the development of commercial activities and business of the area.

Residents claim that Orihuela Costa streets are over run with rubbish The streets of Orihuela Costa have been branded as “disgusting”, after household rubbish and garden waste was strewn across Calle Talco, just one of many such roads where bins are overflowing and where the refuse continues to pile up alongside bins and on pavements.
Cs demand more ambulances for Torrevieja Hospital "We need more ambulances at the Hospital de Torrevieja, which only has 15 or 16 vehicles to serve a population close to half a million people in the summer."
All 41 volunteers will return to duty
Despite the matter being reported to the local town hall on a number of occasions the rubbish continues to accumulate on the street and to make matters worse the household rubbish bins have not been emptied on the last two Saturday’s. The result of this is the bins are completely full by Sunday morning and people have no alternative but to drop their rubbish on the street.
María José Costa Medrano and Pilar Gómez Magán
He said that he hopes that they will once again be an essential body as they make an important contribution to the security and control of the numerous events that are organised in the city of Torrevieja.
Los Montesinos fights against counterfeit goods The demands were made by the spokeswoman for Ciudadanos (Cs) in Torrevieja, Pilar Gómez Magán, with the support of the C’s councillor in San Miguel de Salinas, María José Costa Medrano, who jointly demand “urgent measures to improve areas of security and Health in the Vega Baja region”. Gómez Magán said that “Torrevieja Hospital serves 160,000 patients throughout the year but in summer the population triples. Although we have not been able to confirm figures from official sources, because they seem to want to maintain secrecy on this issue, we have estimated that there are approximately 3 SAMU ambulances, 5 SVB while the remainder are TNA. Costa Medrano said that Torrevieja Hospital covers 22 municipalities, "so there are many thousands of people who would benefit from the proposed changes." Both councillors also proposed the creation of a helipad at the Hospital de Torrevieja “with a 24-hour medical helicopter, especially in the summer months when we have the greatest tourist influx. That way, emergencies requiring transfer to other units in the province can be managed much faster, since roads are often at gridlock in the summer,” said Gomez Magán.
Civil Protection return to their posts Torrevieja’s Councilor for Security and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, has said that an agreement has been reached with all 41 of the town’s Civil Protection volunteers for them all to return to their duties as an essential body for the citizen security of Torrevieja. He thanked the Chief Enrique Pizana, and the Deputy Chief, Estela Prieto for their conciliatory attitudes at a recent meeting following which all parties have shown their satisfaction for the reconsideration of the 41 Civil Protection volunteers to continue exercising their vocation of service for all Torrevejenses.

In many places it is now impossible to walk along the pavement with weeds growing all over it, a situation that creates dangers, especially for people with small children. Furious resident Mary told The Leader “You have to pick your way through the pavements. It is disgusting for everybody, but especially for visitors. What must they think of the Orihuela Costa.”?
While Orihuela Costa police sit on their hands the Los Montesinos Local Police dealt a second blow in just seven days to put an end to the illegal trading in counterfeit products by a number of manteros in the town who were trading in illegal trade and counterfeit products, seizing 185 items, including bags and watches all bearing the names of well-known brands.
Fortunately local people are on hand to clean up the rubbish so that the area can be kept reasonably hygienic. However, following the news that Orihuela Council has recruited 121 people to help clean up the streets people are now asking where they are? They are certainly not cleaning the streets of the Orihuela Costa, as the situation is simply getting worse. Similar images can be seen across the Orihuela Costa
They also confiscated 11 name plates that would have been used on the illegal products thereby bringing a much higher price for the items in question. This police action was in addition to the one carried out at the local market where the Local Police seized another 300 products - on that occasion almost all underwear and shirts of recognised brands, albeit illegal and that allegedly undermine intellectual and industrial property. As on that occasion, the police sent 32 samples to the court for investigation and analysis. The rest of the packages, are being held in municipal offices pending the decision that could lead to the destruction of the products. A small sample of the confiscated goods
New speed camera on Torrevieja stretch of N 332 The Ministry of Development has recently installed a new speed camera on the southern stretch of the N 332 between kilometers 56 and 57, just after the link for the access road to the Torrevieja salt flats. With an average vehicle passage of 43,000 vehicles a day It is one of the most heavily used sections of the road throughout the year, that often exceeds fifty thousand vehicles a day during the summer. The unit, which is mounted on a concrete base, will be powered by solar energy, although it is not yet thought to house the actual camera. A spokesman for DGS said that the measure has been introduced in an effort to combat excessive speed although, as a regular user, the weight of traffic rarely allows drivers the opportunity to drive over the 60kmh limit. However, neither of the two cameras - the one installed in December 2017 and the camera that has just appeared, are equipped to report the state of traffic to the DGT in real time.

REIKI . . The wonderful energy of our universe INTRODUCTION There are as many paths to enlightenment as there are people. Reiki is one of those paths and each person who practices it will walk the path in their own way. No one person owns it – it has been given to all of us as part of the essence of our human being. Reiki is primarily perceived as a practice for healing the body, but it is also a method for healing the mind and spirit. Ultimately, Reiki has the power to reunite the trinity of Mind-Body-Spirit in their optimal state of harmony. All of us need to start the process of returning to that state of harmony. Reiki, with its power and simplicity and its methods for healing both the self and others, offers the way to start taking what I call the “the journey home” THE MEANING OF REIKI Reiki is one of the most ancient healing methods known to mankind. It originated in Tibet and was rediscovered in the early 1900’s by a Japanese priest named Dr Mikao Usui. The tradition of Reiki is referred to 2500-year-old writings in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. The Usui system of Natural Healing, named after Dr Usui, has been passed down by Reiki Masters since that time and is today practiced worldwide. As humans we have Universal Life Energy all around us and within us. The Japanese word Reiki consists of two syllables: “Rei” which describes the cosmic, universal aspect of this energy and “ki”, which means the fundamental life force flowing and pulsating in all living things. This life force energy is given to us at birth. We bring with us a certain amount of “ki” to life, and we use it up in the business of ordinary daily life. We then have to create a daily supply of new energy. When we are unable to make up for the energy consumption for a prolonged period, we may become physically or emotionally ill. If our supply of life force energy is very low and depleted, we suffer from physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, and tend to be much more irritable, bad-tempered and depressed than usual. WHAT IS REIKI? Reiki is a natural and simple healing method which allows you to absorb more life force energy. The Reiki method vitalizes your life force and balances the energies in your body. This natural healing energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the Reiki healer. The laying on of the hands directs the healing energy into the body of the receiver. The Reiki healer is used as a channel to conduct the Universal Life Energy. As a result, no personal energy is drawn or drained from the healer, who is simultaneously charged and strengthened. (The Reiki healer does not remove energy to give them theirs. Reiki energy balances and harmonizes – when there is an imbalance, there is a potential for illness) WHAT DOES REIKI DO? Reiki usually helps healing of all kinds and relieves pains and acute symptoms very quickly. Reiki makes it way to areas of imbalance during a treatment. It also has a positive influence on spiritual growth as it works on many levels, Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being are all enhanced with Reiki energy. After a treatment, you may feel mentally much clearer about things and experience deep insights into particular questions or problems you are facing. Reiki then can help you to make the right changes and decisions in your life, if that is what you need or want to achieve. Reiki affects each person differently, but it always acts wherever the receiver needs it most. However, there are common effects that everyone experiences. Energy used up in everyday life is replaced, so that when you feel exhausted or drained, the imbalance, which may adversely affect you physically, emotionally and mentally, can be put right. If you suffer from stress, you may react with physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, frequent colds, kidney pains and general disorders. These symptoms are the expression of excessive negative stress, accompanied by an imbalance of the energy system. To relieve these symptoms your energy needs to restored. For example, a lowered immune system or a weak organ that is not functioning properly and needs recharging with extra energy. Reiki can balance the energies in the body, helping you to let go and relax, so reducing stress. At the same time, it promotes the development of positive reactions to
See full article at www.theleader.info
stressful situations. In other words, not only the symptoms but also the causes can be healed. Reiki strengthens and harmonizes the immune system. We continually use up life force energy without replacing it. Reiki helps us to replenish and add to our energy and, in this way, helps to create a healthy body
Reiki is a simple technique anyone can learn. Most people experience a huge leap in personal growth after receiving the attunements. This feeling of such loving healing energy is a truly uplifting and empowering experience. I WAS TOLD THAT REIKI WOULD CHANGE MY LIFE. IT DID. IT WILL CERTAINLY CHANGE YOURS
IS REIKI ALWAYS SAFE? The purpose of Reiki is to supply the body with additional energy which it can use for healing itself. Reiki can be used safely regardless of whatever illness the receiver is suffering from. Reiki makes no diagnoses and is intended to be used as a complementary healing method. In the case of acute disorders such as imflammations, influenza, colds, digestive disorders, gall or kidney stones, backaches and headaches, Reiki often acts very quickly and directly by easing the pain and accelerating healing. Reiki can also be applied as first aid as it stops bleeding in open wounds and has a very calming influence on the nervous system, particularly when people are in shock after an accident. With Reiki, you can also provide relief from allergies, arthritis and other chronic disorders. As Reiki supports and complements other medical and natural healing techniques, you can combine it with other treatments, for example with allopathic or homeopathic treatments, body therapies, counselling and speech-therapy and other psychological treatments. A Reiki healer is charged with energy and becomes a channel for Universal Life Energy. Reiki is a gift of the universe, and is available to us all.
A REIKI BREATHING EXERCISE If you want to experience a “taster” of Reiki before committing yourself to Reiki attunement or just to allow yourself to get an idea of what Reiki may feel like, try this exercise. The exercise will have the same relaxing effects as Reiki but without the added power and impact provided by the Universal Life Energy through attunement. Make yourself comfortable, either sitting down or lying on your back and close your eyes. Pay attention to your breath and follow its rhythm. Notice how it flows in and out. Now take three deep breaths Now put your hands on your body wherever you feel drawn to or where you feel tension. Use your intuition to locate the spot in your body that needs relaxation the most. Now direct your breath consciously and repeatedly to this place. Imagine that your breath is the Universal Life Energy which flows through you. Let it collect and expand under your hands. Notice how a feeling of relaxation and peace gradually spreads from that place beneath your hands throughout your entire body After a short while (about five minutes) place your hands on another part of your body. Once again breathe into your hands during the whole exercise. You may find that your breath changes in some positions as the body stores memories and experiences which may now be awakened. It is not necessary to consciously probe feelings or initiate stronger breathing. Just allow yourself to let go and plunge into this feeling of flowing. Move on to two further places on your body and charge them with energy Slowly open your eyes, stretch yourself, and return to your normal daytime consciousness. You will feel more relaxed, calmer and more centred. If you would like to experience the wonderful energy of Reiki as a treatment, please contact CHRISTINE QUINLAN ON 966 795 103 or email me on bodyharmony44@gmail.com
THE EFFECTS OF REIKI In summary, Reiki is all-embracing in its effect. It involves your mind, body and soul and then attempts to set all these aspects of your being into a harmonious balance. Your personal energy, as a giver, is not transmitted to the receiver during a treatment, you are merely a channel. If (without having attuned to Reiki) you try laying your hands on someone else, energy is still passed on, but at a much lower intensity than if you are attuned to Reiki. This is because Reiki is a highly powerful vibrating force, or light energy. While the Universe Life Energy flows through you, as the giver, during the treatment, it is also fortifying and harmonizing you at the same time. You may also experience Reiki as a force which brings you more closely into contact with yourself, opening you up and allowing you to be more loving with yourself and with others. It is a unifying force which brings you closer to a condition of oneness and connection with the “whole” So let me summarise the many benefits: Balances the organs and glands and their bodily functions Releases blocks and suppressed feelings Promotes natural self-healing Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver Balances the energies in the body Enhances personal awareness and helps meditative states Relaxes and reduces stress Promotes creativity Strengthens life force energy Treats symptoms and causes of illness Heals holistically Strengthens the immune system Relieves pain Clears toxin

Rapid Reaction Force swoop on Cabo Roig Manteros Two units of the Guardia Civil USECEC Rapid Reaction Force entertained residents and holidaymakers in Cabo Roig last Thursday when they launched an operation during the early evening to rid the area of manteros, looky looky men. The Guardia were joined by a force helicopter and for a few short hours the manteros were confined to the western edge of the bridge crossing the N332 at the Cabo Roig roundabout.
Whilst little appeared to be achieved on the night a spokesman for the local business association said that he was encouraged by what he had seen and hoped that a Guardia presence would now be maintained until the area is rid of their "top blanket sales."
At least one mantero was arrested and his goods confiscated but the single seizure seemed to be the extent of the Guardia action.
A special operation was also announced in Torrevieja and La Mata on Friday against one hundred manteros who operate on the walkways, promenades and beaches until two in the morning. The council say that they will be launching an awareness campaign focused on the purchasers of their counterfeit products.
They remained in site until just before 10 pm but shortly after they left the area the manteros moved back onto the strip and continued with their illegal trade.
Councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón explained the operation is a joint plan involving the Local Police, the Operational Reinforcement Group of the Local Police and the Civil Guard.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has asked for the maximum cooperation of all residents on 24 August when many of the city streets will be closed to traffic on the occasion of the 1st stage of one of the most important cycling races in the world, the 2019 edition of La Vuelta. In publishing a map of the route, a 13 km time trial, Dolon confirmed that the stage will get underway from the Salinas de Torrevieja saltings which will be resplendent in the characteristic pink colour that the waters take on from July to Sept. There has to be ‘something’ about Clara? What a difference a week makes. Last week we were beside ourselves with sadness on the passing of Brendan Grace. Brendan will never be forgotten, but this week our cup of joy overfloweth as we pay tribute to another Irishman who will never be forgotten either. Never has there been a more popular winner of any sporting event than Shane Lowry after winning the golf ‘Open’. Whoever wrote ‘nice guys finish last’ will be forced to return any money he was paid for coming up with that line. I have never met Shane Lowry, but I did meet his father, Brendan, and Uncles Mick and Sean. The Lowrys are sporting royalty in Offaly. When Offaly won that famous All-Ireland football title in 1982, the three brothers were on the team. I think it was three points Brendan scored in the first half – against a rock-hard Kerry defence. So, you see, Shane comes by his sporting gene and genius honestly. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and he couldn’t avoid being a nice guy to boot.
one of Napoleon’s ‘lucky generals’, he is a decent man. We join with every fair-minded person in wishing Mr Cowan a speedy return to full health.
It is the GAA which really defines Clara and Clara was the first GAA club, outside of Dublin to affiliate to the fledging GAA organisation in 1884. The club has won six senior football county titles and a Leinster Junior hurling title in 2012. Shane is the current president of Clara GAA Club.
I have a soft spot for that midland town of no more than 3,500 people. Maybe some of this has to do with the fact that Clara and my own town of Mullingar are both built on the river Brosna. Before I hit on the name ‘Paddy’s Point’ for the pub I opened in 1999, I was going to call it ‘The Brosna’. Then Mrs Youcantbeserious piped up with, “God knows what Brosna means in Spanish” – and so it became ‘Paddy’s Point.’ But I digress …
My neighbour Lal Timmons was a Christian Brother attached to the Franciscan order in Clara. I attended his funeral in Clara, after he was murdered in Kenya. The entire town of Clara turned out that day – and that will never be forgotten around Delvin. My own brother, Sean, doesn’t have happy memories of his time in the monastery there – but every ounce of kindness he received was from Clara natives.
When I think of Clara, I think of honest, decent, hard-working farmers and schoolteachers. I think of Michael Egan and his wife Kathleen (RIP). I think of the great days (and nights!) we enjoyed in Michael’s ‘Clara Squash Club.’ I always say we should never generalise – but for me, I have to say the people of Clara are the friendliest group you might ever encounter.
Shane Lowry has brought immeasurable joy to Clara and to the entire country. His own standing among the greats of the golf world will stand the test of time. He is a great credit to his county, his schools, Esker Hills Golf Club – but most of all to his parents. What a role model and what an example of the dictum, ‘anything is possible if only you believe’.
Clara is a proud town – and it has a lot to be proud about. It even produced its very own Taoiseach – and whilst Brian Cowen was not
I admit to holding a ‘hump’ against the Clara man for opting out of the last Olympics – but it’s OK now Shane! And when I read that

Shane Lowry’s homecoming - feeling proud in Clara, Offaly, Ireland.
There are strong soccer and a boxing club in the town – and as you will see sport means a lot to the people. (Have I mentioned golf yet?) When Shane Lowry was a boy he was as likely to be seen with a hurley in his hand as a golf club. “I was too slow to play football”, he once said in his care-free self-effacing manner.
But is there something about the town of Clara that spawns being special?

Sir Rod's father Robert, who died in 1990, used to take him to watch Arsenal - and Scotland
Sir Rod Stewart WORLD Exclusive Sir Rod Stewart. Former Scotland manager Craig Brown, CBE, talks football in a World Sport Exclusive to Andrew Atkinson. SIR ROD Stewart's love affair with football began over half a century ago - when his dad Bob took him to watch Scotland against England at Hampden Park in 1964. Scotland beat England 1-0. And the seeds of football were planted into Celtic supporter Sir Rod's blood. Little did he know at that time, that the Hampden Park path would one day lead to him training with the Scotland national team - and become good friends of Craig Brown - along with a plethora of football managers and players across the Globe. "Sir Rod trained with the Scottish team in New Jersey - and we were all invited to his show at Maddison Square Garden, New York," said Craig. "Many of the players went up on stage with Sir Rod - while he performed - singing in his Scotland top!," recalled Craig. Sir Rod, 74, who first played at Madison Square Garden in the seventies, said: "Madison Square Garden was a great evening." Sir Rod, on record as saying that he would like some of his ashes scattered at Hampden Park, added: "I wouldn't have missed it for the world!".
Craig, 79, in charge of the Scotland national team during 1993-2001, recalled the day Sir Rod contacted him, ahead of the Celtic versus Blackburn Rovers European Cup tie at Ewood Park in 2002. "At the time I was manager at Preston North End and I received a call from Sir Rod, asking if I could recommend somewhere he could dine (away from Blackburn) and I arranged a dining place in Preston," recalled Craig. "I went to Woolworths on Fishergate, Preston, and purchased a dozen Rod Stewart CDs - and got him to sign them!," said Craig, Scotland's most successful manager. After dining, Sir Rod Stewart jumped into his chauffeur driven limousine, and headed to Ewood Park to watch the Rovers versus Celtic tie. "Billy Davies (assistant manager at Preston) and I sat with Sir Alex Ferguson at the match, while Rod was just sitting along from us," said Craig. Another football memory is Sir Rod so emotionally taken aback - after Celtic's win against Barcelona in a Champions League tie in 2012 - he burst into tears. Speaking about the Champions League 2-1 win against Barcelona, Sir Rod said: "It meant that much to me. It was about me and Celtic - and my dad - I was full of pride, and it overcame me."
Sir Rod's father Robert, who died in 1990, used to take him to watch Arsenal - and Scotland - as a kid in the early years, inaugurating him into The Tartan Army. Sir Rod was sailing on a cruiseliner this weekend (July 20) in France with his wife, model Penny Lancaster, star of ITV's 'Loose Women' programme, relaxing after his British summer concert tour - with the Celtic Bhoys Crest on the
liner. "Sir Rod has the Celtic Crest on his drums when playing in concert. He's a good guy," said Craig. *NEXT week reporter Andrew Atkinson continues Sir Rod Stewart's love affair with football, with his wife, model Penny Lancaster, also a Celtic fan; along with Craig Brown's memoirs. ‘Baby Essence’ European Sub Champions!
Monday 29th July - Sunday 4th August, 2019 10 dancers and their teacher Paris Brumitt from Essence Dance & Fitness traveled along with their families to Rome the weekend of the 12th-15th of July, where they competed in the Great European Finals of Vive Tu Sueño amongst many other talented dancers and countries. After some sight seeing on the arrival it was time for Baby Essence to take the stage at The Auditorium Del Massimo on Sunday the 14th. July. These young dancers qualified back in March in Madrid at the national finals with 3rd intermediate, meaning they represented Spain in the European Finals where they placed with an amazing 2nd place and went from being intermediate to advanced level meaning they are now European SubChampions!! Words can’t describe how extremely proud I am of them all and the feeling of wining the European title for HipHop, with all the dancer being such a young age, our youngest being now 5 and the oldest 8, it’s a great achievement to say they qualified and danced in the European finals but to say they are now champions is unbelievable! The whole team all work extremely hard and all I can say is hard work sure pays off, there’s nothing better than seeing all

Operation waiting lists average 93 days in Spain In 2002, the number of patients on the surgical waiting list stood at 9.8 per thousand inhabitants, a rate that has risen to 12.7 per thousand inhabitants in 2017, according to the study by the Economic Crisis and Health in Spain of the Ministry of Health. There are currently 584,018 people awaiting surgery in the Spanish public health system, an average of 93 days, but a period that increases in some specialities including neurosurgery (145 days), plastic surgery (138), traumatology (111), paediatrics and angiology- vascular surgery (both with 103 days). Priorities are also established within each specialty. For an arthroscopy, for example, the waiting period is 102 days; for varicose veins, 90 days, and for a cataract, an average of 62 days. The communities with the longest wait are Canarias (147 days), Castilla-La Mancha (137 days) and Cataluña (132 days) whereas the shortest wait for an operation is in La Rioja and Madrid (both 47 days), followed by the Basque Country (48 days). The situation differs, depending on where you live, but according to Dr. Eduardo García, president of the Spanish Association of Surgeons (AEC), one of the main difficulties in bringing down surgical

waiting lists is due to" a significant increase in the geriatric population and the presence of more and more neoplastic patients with tumours, which prioritise the surgical lists." Dr. Garcia, who specialises in general and digestive surgery, understands that there are those who prefer to use private health "because, of course, the private sector has a very good system in place. There are currently 11.5 million Spaniards with a private health policy, one million more than in 2013, and according to the National Catalogue of Hospitals of the Ministry of Health, in 2018, of 799 hospitals in Spain, 57% (451 hospitals) are private. “But the truth is” according to Dr Garcia, “that when you have a complex problem you should always go to public hospitals because they can provide you with a lot more security.”

Arturo Fuento cigar, he explains in a video what was in his bag on the day, including his Ping Sigma Fetch putter with a hole in the middle to pick up the ball. Unfortunately, as his English makes Sevvy sound like Sir Laurence Olivier we have to guess why he only uses 10 clubs. BERND WIESBERGER finally sunk his three foot putt and Benjamin Hebert three-putted to end the Scottish Open playoff. The two protagonists had to go down the 18th three times after both parring and bogeying the hole on the first two trips and missing putts like 36 handicappers, while the onlookers put on more jumpers and hoped the pair would wrap it up before the pubs shut. NO CHANCE of the pubs shutting in Portrush on the Open Sunday. Prizes range from fourball vouchers to an overnight B&B stay at Donald’s place. Nervous ladies are assured Mr.Trump will not be in residence. WHEN MAX FAULKER won the Open in 1951, people asked Bernard Darwin if he had managed to get a word with the Champion. “My readers,” said Darwin, “are interested in what I think about his win, not what he thinks.” WHEN GENE SARAZEN’s BALL landed in a bunker at the 1932 Open Championship at Prince’s Golf Club, Sandwich he pulled out a club hidden in his bag that he designed himself. Inspired by how air travels over an aeroplane wing, Sarazen built a lofted club with a flange lower than the leading edge so the club would “bounce” through the sand and produce more consistent shots. It’s known today as the sand wedge, but after Sarazen’s win his competitors dubbed it “The Weapon.” ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. A GOLFSPY REVIEW on the Honma TW747 VX irons: “This classy-looking forged steel iron packs a real punch. The extra forgiveness will be welcome news for those pondering a first switch to a forged iron.” Justin Rose uses them, but at over £1,000 for six, pondering is all most of us will ever do. Justin also uses an Axis 1 Rose Proto putter made from 303 stainless steel and carbon fibre, with wing-like extensions. From 2012 to 2017, Justin was giving away shots on the green. Then, in 2018 he dedicated himself to improving his stroke. The hard work paid off and he won twice, collected eleven top-10 finishes and took home the FedEx Cup. On the PGA Tour this year he is the Most Improved Putter. Just goes to show there’s nothing like practice. LEE WESTWOOD chatting to Radio 5 Live: “One of the main reasons youngsters dont take up golf is it’s too hard. We should be trying to make it easier, perhaps different formats where maybe the hole is bigger, and theres not so much rough on the courses so people are not out there looking for their golf balls all the time. I think that’s part of the problem, that it is a hard game to play.” I know the answer Lee, attach elastic to the ball! Why didn’t someone tell us golf was hard when we started? Knowing that would have put us right off and saved us years of misery. Until next time: Happy Golfing.

Around and About the courses It would appear that whatever reason many of the local courses have decided that this summer and Autumn they will restructure their golf courses in some way and we have covered these periodically over recent week so it is probably prudent at this moment in time to provide a summary of such work, namely: Campoamor They will replace all 18 greens during the 5th August to the 15th October to eliminate the re-occurring problem of different grasses. Bonalba They are replacing greens 3 and 14 for exactly the same reason, mixed grasses with work scheduled for completion by 20/09/19. Font del Llop They are re-structuring the 9th green by reducing the height and undulations to give more pin positions plus raising the green side bunker and changing the water course of the stream and this work will take well into the Autumn and they have laid a good quality provisional green for use during this period. La Marquesa They had already re-structured the 10th &13th greens but now have additionally included the 8th &17th holes into the programme and have lifted and replaced the old 8th green and built a new green in close proximity and introduced a new par 3 green alongside the old 9th fairway, and again this work will be ongoing well into the Autumn. We will keep you update of changes as they occur. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing

World ranked No1 for Indoor Bowls and Potters Ambassador, Greg Harlow visited Country bowls Club in the Valle de Sol, Murcia, on Thursday 18th July 2019. The Potters cruise docked in Cartagena in the morning and the Potters team headed to Country Bowls for a friendly match. 2 bowl rinks and 6 ends, played twice was the order of the day, and although the temperatures soared the event was a great success. Graham Richardson, owner at Country Bowls said - We have worked hard in putting Country Bowls on the map and while this has been at least a year in the planning it was a great event and to welcome the Potters team and Greg Harlow to our club has just been magnificent. Greg and the Potters team were on their Mediterranean cruise which docked at Cartagena and with Country Bowls not that far to travel, arrangements were made to host them at the club. Andy Bryce, chairman at the club said, what a great achievement for our club. Our players and members welcomed their team as they do with all visitors and we had a great day, hopefully one that can be repeated in the future. It was an honor and a privilege to play against Greg, something I may never get a chance to do again. Every member of the club were involved in playing and we had a great, fun afternoon. Special thanks to the members who worked hard in sprucing the place up and also thank you to Phil Cochrane without whom this event would not have taken place. Southwell jumps meeting hit by heatwave - but Flat trainer Johnston and jockey Murphy unfased SOUTHWELL'S race meeting on Thursday was abandoned - with two races remaining - due to record-breaking temperatures. Racing was affecting horses in the sweltering 35 degrees heatwave. Two horses were treated for post race heat stress, and a horse was withdrawn for overheating - after showing signs of colic. Flat racing at Sandown was completed - in 36 degrees - and at Yarmouth, on a day record UK temperature for July of 38.1 degrees were recorded in Cambridgeshire. Flat trainer Mark Johnston - unconcerned by the heat - with jockeys also having ridden in hotter conditions (abroad).
ASHES PREVIEW by Tony Matthews The England-Australia Ashes series starts on Thursday, 1st August, and having witnessed some terrific action in the recent World Cup, including the greatest-ever match when England beat New Zealand after a ‘super over’ in the final, cricket lovers everywhere – hopefully – can enjoy a lot more excitement over the next seven weeks or so.
Monday 29th July - Sunday 4th August, 2019 "They're hot weather animals and (most of the time) I think they love it," reasoned Johnston, at Sandown. "I've raced in 44 degrees in Caulfield. There's no issue - as far as I'm concerned," said Oisin Murphy, in the race for the Flat jockeys title. With regards to the jumps meeting at Southwell, stand-in clerk Charlie Moore said: "We knew it would be hot and made the decision to bring the start of racing forward (11.55am). "When we started it was around 29-30 degrees - and everyone was happy. After the fifth race it was 35 degrees and thought it right to hold a Stewards’ inquiry - about whether racing should continue. “We agreed that we had reached a point it wasn’t wise to continue common sense prevailed - and everyone at the course saluted the efforts made by Southwell." Southwell clerk Paul Barker was busy on equine welfare, with Moore brought in to assist. The BHA revealed the decision to call off the last two races at Southwell was taken by officials at the course. "It's vital that extra measures are taken to care for all horses in a

A loopy ball on middle-leg was hit onto the pad of LMTCC's Tommy Knowles, with Madrid's team up screaming, in what seemed an enternity, awaiting, and a long stare from Knowles. With bowlers on their knees, the umpire lifted his finger, giving lbw, the game tied and points shared. "Equine welfare is paramount," said trainer David Pipe, whose horse Hot Ryan was scheduled to run in the 3 miles Amateur riders' Handicap hurdle at Southwell. Horseracing in France faced hotter conditions, than those in Britain, with temperatures hitting 42 degrees in Paris.
As it stands, ahead of this year’s opening encounter at Edgbaston, England have played a total of 1,010 Test Matches, winning 365 and losing 300, with 345 draws. They have won an Ashes series on 32 occasions, and right now England are playing their 1,011th Test (v. Ireland) at Lords.

Since that first-ever Test Match, a grand total of 330 Tests have been contested between England and Australia. LMTCC's Kieran Wood told me. Madrid gained an emphatic win in the first T20 game (report in July 21 editions). A. Singh's two overs went for 14, with C. Wood claiming the wicket of Akmal, with a rare caugt behind (at Torrevieja) J. Kinsella snatching the opportunity. Seven runs came from C. Woods' two overs. Score: 21/1, 4 overs.
Those likely to come into the England set up are fast bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad plus batsmen Joe Denly and Rory Burns. The Aussies may also include a player named Burns (opener Joe) plus four top-class spinners and four quickies, among them Mitchell Starc who took the most wickets (27) in the recent World Cup tournament Australia are the holders of the Ashes urn, having won the last series ‘down under’ in 2017-18.

In the recent one-off Test Match, World Cup winners England were sensationally bowled out for 85 by Ireland in two hours ten minutes on day one and then the Irish were demolished for just 38 in 100 minutes on day 3. After seeing England crumble on the first day, ex-captain Michael Vaughan said “It was embarrassing”. Former England U19 bowler Tim Murtagh took 5-13 as England crashed from 36-1 to 85 all-out in 14.1 overs with five of WC winners mustering only seven runs between them. This was England’s 25th lowest-ever Test score and their ninth lowest on home soil. It was also the fourth time England had lost 10 wickets in one session of a Test since 2016.
In reply, Ireland, in only their third-ever Test and ranked 15th in the world, replied with 207 all out. England went in again and scored 303 with night watchman and subsequent ‘player of the match’ Jack Leach making 92. This left Ireland needing 182 to win. No way! They were simply blown away for a mere 38 – the lowest-ever Test score at Lords - as Chris Woakes (6-17) and Stuart Broad (4-19) bowled England to a 143-run victory. For the record, 62,748 spectators attended the three days of the Test. • Before the ‘85’ catastrophe, England’s previous lowest innings score came earlier this year v. the West Indies in Barbados, and prior to that the lowest at home was 77 v. Australia in 1997.

Group 1 head-tohead at Goodwood By Andrew Atkinson Phoenix Of Spain and Too Darn Hot go head-tohead in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes over a mile at Goodwood, the former beating Too Darn Hot in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Phoenix Of Spain, trained by Charlie Hills, finished behind Group 1 winner Too Darn Hot, trained by John Gosden, in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out. "Too Darn Hot is a very, very quick horse - we stupidly tried to stretch him out off a severely interrupted preparation - after missing the Guineas," confessed Gosden. "I think we have him back in the right place. The Sussex Stakes is a lovely race - but you hope not to be drawn too high over a mile at Goodwood," said Gosden. "Too Darn Hot's enthusiasm was always there but he lost a lot of time. He was only walking for three weeks, went to the Dante, and was never going to stay that trip. "The panicky rush to Ireland was not wise. He's an extremely fast horse - with bundles of natural speed," said Gosden. Hills says that tactics will play a big role when Phoenix Of Spain, priced at 7-1, and Too Darn Hot, 5-4 favourite, clash at the Goodwood Festival on July 31. New look Thader get pre-season friendlies underway Although it´s still only July, Thader Rojales have dusted off the cobwebs, having got the first of a number of friendlies under their belt. On first examination, an opening fixture against a youth team side, should be a comfortable stroll in the park. But, when that team is a feeder club of the mighty Atletico Madrid, then reality sets in. Celtic Elche are classed as a mens youth team, who last season secured promotion to the national youth league.
and along with other replacements, made a big difference. Midway through the 2nd period, a rare attack allowed Celtic Elche the opportunity to double their lead, which they gratefully accepted. On this showing, a prolific goal scorer must be high on Ortega´s shopping list, for although numerous chances were created, the overall shooting was pretty poor.
Thader played the majority of their new signings in the 2nd half, preferring to give last seasons players a starting role. How new manager Jon Ortega´s men went a goal down in the 1st half, is difficult to fathom out!
Next Friday 2 August, Thader are again at home inside Moi Gomez stadium, but with a slightly later ko time of 8.30pm. As with a lot of friendly matches, ko times can change at short notice, so it is highly recommended to check on the C.D Thader 19/20 facebook page, before travelling.
A goalkeeping blooper was responsible for the visitors taking the lead, but in all honesty, had it not been for poor finishing, Thader could have comfortably been in the lead by half time. Veteran Rafa Gomez, making his debut, shone in midfield,
It was a nice touch to allow fans in for free last Saturday, as there was a decent crowd in evidence. Kelme CF are the next visiting team. They are also a youth side, being a feeder club to La Liga side Villarreal.
San Fulgencio, Atletico Catral, CD Dolores, CD Altet, Santa Pola, AC Torrellano, Monforte CF, CF Rafal, CD Montesinos and CD Murada. Andrew, pictured interviewing England 1966 World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick against Germany in a 4-2 victory at Wembley, said: "After 40 years' reporting on football, I'm ready to go again for the 2019-20 campaign!".
'My people' do not want me - ex-Monte star Dani Former CD Montesinos player Dani O'Rourke feels that he been snubbed by the club - after being left in the wilderness - ahead of the 2019-20 season. "Given the situation that CD Montesinos have not contacted me I could not wait any longer," Dani told me. CD Montesinos, relegated to the Valencia 2nd Regional Group 8 last season, have retained a plethora of players and made signings under new manager Jesus Santander. "Therefore I will go to a team that want me," said Dani, who left CD Montesinos three years ago, in a move to Almoradi. "I have not been told anything by CD Montesinos - with the date approaching of all the teams closing signings - ahead of pre-season," said Dani. "My mind is set to join San Fulgencio in the 1st Regional, where I have held talks with manager Fernando," said Dani. CD Montesinos have announced the 2019-20 squad: Carlos, Manu, Morante, Dimitry, Fernando, German, Maccan, Josema, Carlos Lorente, Alfredo, Diego. Luis Toledano, Alex Pamies, Pastor, Santos, Gonzalo, Nicolas Chupov, Lucas, and Diego Barroso. "Three years ago I decided to leave Spain in a move to Italy. I had the opportunity to sign for the Futsal Cagliari, a great opportunity - but it came at a cost - because of the bond I had, and still have, with the Roldan FS," said Marta. "But I decided to accept the opportunity, and in doing so, going to Italy has allowed me to devote myself completely to Futsal. In Italy I can live from my passion," said Marta. Looking ahead to the 2019-20 season at Futsal Florentina in Serie A, Marta said: "I feel lucky to be able to live off the sport I love. "Playing football - a dream that began in San
