NO END TO FLOOD SUPPORT FOR HELP AT HOME COSTA BLANCA The charity is still working to help an estimated 1,300 of the worst-affected people.

A follow up on the flooding relief after the September storms. By Tony Mayes Although it is now almost two months since the devastating floods experienced in the area, the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca is still helping scores of people in the Almoradi and Orihuela areas providing them with essentials they need to survive. The serious floods in the north of England were minor in comparison to the devastation which took place in Spain in the worst rainstorm to hit in living memory. What made it far worse was that a reservoir burst, sending millions of litres of water, thick mud and debris into people’s homes. The interior walls of some of the houses were made of materials which disintegrated and there are still people living in the upstairs rooms because downstairs is uninhabitable. Help at Home Costa Blanca spun into action immediately news of the devastation hit the TV screens and newspapers. A fund-raising event was hurriedly organised masterminded by entertainer Stevie Spit at the Emerald Isle in La Florida and supported by other entertainers who gave their time free. The charity organised a stallholder market and the event attracted many hundreds of people, and more

than 4,000 euros was raised the charity donating the takings from the two shops, 520 euros, and the takings from the market. Four large van loads of donated items have gone to the affected areas, and this week a fifth has been sent, filed to the roof with furniture, clothes, food and cleaning materials. Money raised has also been spent on providing new school equipment to replace that which was lost. Sylvia Sakir, vice president of the charity and who is also the principal fund raiser, has been working tirelessly to help the estimated 1,300 of the worst-affected people. She said: “I am so very grateful to the people who have donated so much. We were inundated with donated items and the help that people living on or near the coast has been very much appreciated by those who have lost everything.” Sylvia added that what surprised her was that many people who donated said they had no idea that Help at Home CB was so far reaching a charity – believing it was merely running a couple of charity shops and little more. In fact the charity’s 65 or so volunteers look after the needs of about 100 clients – taking them on hospital and doctor visits, helping them with chores in their homes, befriending those who are desperately lonely, helping those who may have legal problems – the help is widespread and comprehensive. One of the latest is that of a mother of three in her 40s who has become paralysed from the waist down following a procedure in hospital. Volunteers are helping her on a daily basis.

PSOE demand resignation of Orihuela mayor Bascuñana

T

he controversial past of Emilio Bascuñana, the PP mayor of Orihuela, could be about to end his political career, after Alicante’s chief prosecutor, Jorge Rabasa, said on Tuesday that the Oriolan politician could have committed a crime of misappropriation after charging the Department of Health for his services as an advisor for 6 years without doing the job. After evaluating the report submitted during an internal investigation, including the questioning of Bascuñana himself, the investigating prosecutor has said that he considers that the facts constitute a criminal offense. He has now referred his conclusions to the Orihuela Prosecutor's Office for them to take further action, which will either end in a complaint being put before the court or the case being shelved. The Department of Health sent the Prosecutors Office their internal report on the working life of Emilio Bascuñana between the years 2007 and 2013 during the time that he acted as an advisor to the Ministry in Alicante. The report alleges that the

mayor spent 6 years as an advisor to the Authority but, despite drawing a salary, never did any work. For all those years there are no records of him taking any holidays or days off and there was no health official aware of him doing any work. The investigating prosecutor said he considers the facts to constitute a criminal offense. The mayor himself categorically denies the accusation saying that it is a smokescreen put up by the opposition PSOE Group with the intention of deflecting attention from the ERE corruption case in Andalusia, where the party have governed for almost 40 years and which involves public money from a €680-million unemployment fund. He says that he has issued full explanations to both Emilio Bascuñana, with good friend and Deputy Leader of the Partido Popular, Teodoro Garcia Egea. the Ministry of Health and to the public and he can- The Orihuela mayor categorically denies all of the accusations saying that he is the subject of political not understand why they are continuing to push the persecution by the opposition PSOE, as they attempt to deflect public attention from the ERE case. case. He adds that he is the subject of ‘political persecution’ and that he did everything that he was requested to do during the years in question, including advisory tasks and acting as a locum to cover the sick leave of other doctors. But both the PSOE and Cambiemos Orihuela were quick to publicly request the resignation of the mayor. The spokeswoman for the municipal socialist group, Carolina Gracia, said that there has been a change in the situation in that "the proceedings have now become criminal and are no longer purely civil." That is why they demand "that Bascuñana has the dignity to resign.” Meanwhile the leader of coalition partners Ciudadanos, José Aix, who is also the deputy mayor, said that he has no record of any developments in the process opened against the mayor of Orihuela. “We only know from third parties that the Prosecutor's Office is going refer the charges," he said, adding that "if a formal complaint is submitted to the Court and proceedings are opened, we will take whatever decision is appropriate at the time”. He also responded to PSOE saying that "they are not in a position to pontificate, especially in view of the ERE ruling in Andalusia where their party officials are caught up in the biggest fraud case in the history of Spain.”

Spanish Police closedown an IPTV Supplier running multiple IPTV services

A total of a dozen arrests have been made across the country in the Alicante Province, Madrid, Toledo, Murcia, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and other locations. Reports say that four people were charged with managing access to content, attracting customers, and collecting cash through various platforms from selling captured broadcast singles, while the other 8 people who were arrested are all sellers of the service. In carrying out the raids police say that they have seized 15 hard drives and 10 computers that are likely to contain the names and information of everyone the IPTV owners sold their services to as a result of which the police are now considering further action, which could involve the prosecution of users.

This raid comes after Italy’s financial police force Guardia di Finanza carried out a major crackdown on illegal video streaming IPTV platforms including Xtream Codes, reportedly the company behind the software systems that run many IPTV services, less than two months ago. It was reported that as many as 50 million people used their service. Xtream-Codes offered an “all-in-one” solution to operate an IPTV service. According to police they now have control over the system and have reportedly cut off 5,000 clients servicing over 50 million customers around the world. Exactly what IPTV services used Xtream-Codes is unknown as is how much data the police got. However it’s very likely they now know the names and locations of many of the 5,000 clients who have bought the IPTV services.

The Immediate Past Master of Las Salinas Lodge, Eric Raddings, seen in the photograph presenting the vouchers to Director of the Orphanage Vincente said, “The San Jose Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela was one of the charities I nominated last year as Master of Las Salinas Lodge, and I had the pleasure of going to visit Vicente and his team at work in October. The centre directly cares for and houses 80 orphans of all nationalities from acros the Alicante region. It also provides and maintains four apartments, three in Orihuela the other in Alicante, each housing four young people, making the transition from orphanage life to becoming self sufficient in the outside world. On site they also run a school for 400 children from the Orihuela district, and in addition, operate a carpenter’s shop and auto workshop offering four years of training so the youngsters have a Certificate of Competence before, hopefully, finding employment. In 2013, a woman, aged 52, hiking in the Pyrenees, who had fallen off a cliff to her death, was eaten by Griffon vultures. Rescue workers were able to recover her body, leaving only her clothes and a few of her bones. Being the first human to be documented being eaten by Griffon vultures, the tragic death brought worldwide attention to the Griffon vulture problems in Southern Europe. When size really does matter! Since then, agents opened several lines of investigation as five euro banknotes were detected throughout the country and Portugal, but mainly in Madrid, the Valencian Community, Andalusia and Catalonia.

Griffon Vulture in Punta Prima, Orihuela By Andrew Atkinson A Griffon Vulture has been returned to its natural habitat - after spending days in Punta Prima, Orihuela. There was one major change to the Board, however, the appointment of former Navy diver Graham Rhodes to the Presidency. Graham replaced Pastor Keith Brown who has held the position of Branch President for the last eight years. On assuming the role Graham made a short speech thanking Pastor Keith for his commitment and dedication to the Branch during his tenure of office. A toast was then proposed to Keith and his lovely wife Cathy.

Spain has the biggest colony of Griffon vultures in Europe, located at Hoces del Rio Duraton Natural Park, in the Province of Segovia. The investigation process has been complex because five-euro banknotes are not usually examined by the general public because of their low value, so counterfeit notes are not usually discovered in this regard.

Police efforts led to the identification of several individuals with a police record for similar crimes. Investigations revealed that 45,000 euros in 5 euro notes have been put into circulation by this particular gang.

Orihuela residents have been given a â‚Ź200,000 boost with the announcement that over 700 new refuse containers are to be sited in the Municipality.

Another resident claimed that collectors are also not emptying ALL containers. "Where we live there are four containers - but on many occasions only ONE is emptied," they alleged. "Despite all four containers being full, they empty one, then drive away."

"It is about time that additional refuse containers were introduced, due to the many new apartments constructed," said one resident. "Despite a request for extra bins in the past it had always been refused," they added, but now, 740 containers are being placed across Orihuela’s street cleaning and refuse collection service - after lengthy campaigns for additional

After months of awaiting for new containers, one resident said: "A new container was placed in Calle Azafran this month - which has now been removed." Problems have been rife, with the dumping of rubbish, both household and garden cuttings, either placed in household waste containers - or left alongside them. Vehicles, cars, wagons and vans, see containers as 'rich pickings' within Orihuela Costa and many other areas in the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida vicinities. "Refuse is taken out of bins on a daily basis. Rooting for furniture and household items - leaving it strewn in the streets," said a resident. Builders materials and debris are also a big concern throughout the region - illegally dumped alongside and inside bins. An Orihuela resident claimed that he contacted the Council Refuse Department about removing building waste and was instructed to leave it by the bin - after 8pm - and it would be collected the day after. A call has also been made for additional recycling containers to be put in situ in and around the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida areas, with bins overflowing with waste, especially in the height of the summer season.

‘Where you live, and what you [don’t] drive.’ I drive a twelve year old car. It is a black car. I have owned several black cars, but I have never before had a twelve year old car as my primary car. Last year I drove an eleven year old car for the first time, and before that it was ten years old – and so on. Same story, going all the way back to when my new car was three year’s old. I know … I know, you couldn’t give a rat’s ass what sort of car I drive – but I am setting up to make a point, if only you can stick it out. My first new car was purchased in 1973 and from then until my black car was three years old, I changed to a new one between one and three years. I just loved the gloss on a new car – and particularly the smell of the inside. I only had to think about changing and the existing car would somehow come to a halt on the forecourt outside a car showroom. I was a soft touch for even a rookie salesman and left him wondering if he was sure he charged me enough. I was in love with my new car. Not any more, my friends. My feelings have changed. In fact, I have developed a feeling of loyalty towards my mature but beautiful black Beemer. Six, seven and eight years ago, I was only paying road tax for six months at a time, in the expectation of ‘changing’. Now my faithful old friend receives the due respect of being taxed for a year. I am not alone in holding onto my old car. Once upon a time people were allegedly judged on ‘where you live and what you drive.’ Not any more: Back in the day we changed the car ‘because we can’ – now just as many people are not changing ‘because we can.’ At this juncture, let me hastily add that there are lots of people who love a new car – and fair play to them. If that is your thing, do it. And dealerships like my friend, Jim Bourke have to live! Please God, I shall live long enough to enjoy the tingle of shopping for a ‘dazzler’ again, but at the moment I am not thinking that way. Statistics tell us that there is a growing swell of the same opinion. Car sales in Ireland are down 20 per cent since 2016 – and this at a time when the national economy is booming. In Britain, a third of the 21 – 29 age group do not hold a driver’s licence. Many of these

The big car was status – and that again is changing. When I was in my late teens and early twenties, like most of my contemporaries I only owned one good suit. The ‘good suit’ was worn to Sunday church, holiday occasions – but most importantly of all … dances! The strange thing here is that as soon as my buddies and I could afford more than one suit; we started going to the dances in shaggy jumpers, jeans and casual trousers. Is the same rule applying to cars now? Of course pollution and the environment has a lot to do with changing people’s attitude on how they get around. There is a hint of guilt attached to owning a guzzler nowadays and that will only increase. Several countries I have visited in recent years have come up with innovative schemes to reduce cars on the road. Tax breaks for car pools, free carparks on the outskirts of cities for car sharing and so on. There is a brilliant car-sharing system in Birmingham that started some years back. You pay X amount and can get behind a wheel anywhere in the city and leave the car at your designated drop off point. Several other cities in the UK and United States are well advanced in coming up with schemes similar to the ‘rent a bike’ we now see in all our cities The idea of being able to spontaneously grab a car without having to fill forms or enter a conventional rental agreement will encourage people not to bring their cars to centre city. Individual drivers are also taking their own initiatives with regard to car ownership. Friends, families and work colleagues of from two to

ten people are buying a car between them. So, like the man said, ‘thing’s they are a changing.’ One thing for sure though is that I’m not for changing my black beauty until I have to! Hilary's gotta-lotta (hot water) bottle!

Monday 25th November- Sunday 1st December, 2019

Hilary: Gottalotta bottle!

By Andrew Atkinson Having sunbathed in temperatures of 30 degrees plus in Spain this year, Hilary Turner has turned to drastic measures, to keep warm back in the UK with a giant hot water bottle! "The giant hot water bottle stays warm until the early hours of the morning!," she told The Leader. "The hot water bottle is 2ft 6" - if you put it across your tummy it feels like your being hugged," said retired Nurse, Preston, Lancashire born Hilary. Containers to warm the bed were used in the 16th century, with early versions containing hot coals, from the dying embers of the fire. Prior to the invention of rubber hot-water bottles, they were made of various materials, including zinc, copper, brass, glass, earthenware and wood. To prevent burning, metal hot water bottles were wrapped in a soft cloth bag. India rubber hot-water bottles were in use in Britain by 1875. Modern conventional hot-water bottles were patented in 1903, manufactured in a

natural rubber or PVC. Hilary, 55, who visited Los Montesinos last month with brother Roger, is having to cuddle up to the hot water bottle - as the winter weather deepens in the UK. "It keeps your feet - up to your belly - and it’s warm. It's also great, when you sleep alone!," said Hilary.

FAOC meets with Orihuela Councillors

During the last two weeks representatives of FAOC have met with three Orihuela Councillors where they have received updates of progress being made within each of their specific departments.

Members of he FAOC Board with Councillor José Galiano

María Teresa Sánchez, Citizen Participation, explained that he council will do everything possible to hold elections to the District Boards by the end of January 2020, so that the meetings are able to be held prior to the end of February 2020. She also accepted the need to improve Participatory Budgeting campaigns, increasing the actual budget allocation and the amounts by districts based on the size of the population. Víctor Bernabéu, Sports, Commerce and Markets, said that a new contract is currently being drafted for the operation of the Playa Flamenca Sports Centre and that when it is opened the prices will be identical to those of the existing centres in Orihuela and outlying villages, however, no estimated start date was provided. He added that the council plans to modify the Market Ordinance in order to improve the operation of Orihuela markets and they are currently studying the placement of public restroom cabins and other measures. José Galiano, Transportation, Health and Statistics, informed attendees that the signing

Balaton Group Celebrate Another Year The Balaton Group recently held their AGM, attended by 15 of the 24 members. Items discussed included a proposal to sell of one of the boats which was rejected. A

of a new Transport agreement will soon take place, which will include improvements for Orihuela Costa. In addition, a study of communications improvements is being carried out across the municipality. At this time, it is not possible to introduce bus lines from Orihuela Costa to Corvera airport as it is a different autonomous community, or to Alicante as they have to leave and return from / to Orihuela city. The Councillor said that the Ministry of Health would not authorise a second health

centre, given the shortfall of the number of health cards required but the council is looking at the possibility of opening a “medical office”, which will be under municipal management, in Orihuela Costa. FAOC said that they appreciated the cooperation of the three councillors and they are set to have new meetings when required but, despite asking last September, they are still waiting for a meeting with the Councillors of Beaches, Security and Infrastructure, Parks and Gardens, Angel Manuel Noguera García and Ramón López Cabrera

maintenance program was agreed for 2020 and the finances were reported to be healthy. A membership drive is planned, including an open day during the Easter period. Balaton is a boat share group within SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, and has four day sail boats on the Mar

Fashion Comes (again) to Hondón de los Frailes Richie with Willie Thorne

Big FM targeted by jamming signals By Andrew Atkinson RADIO wars are disrupting the airwaves - with the latest station Big FM Radio - targeted by jamming signals. Owner Richie Sparks, with studios in Calle Blanca 1, Quesada, had to apologise to listeners after being cut-off the airwaves. "I Apologised to listeners on 91.1, due to interference, which was beyond our control," said Richie, who resides in La Marina. Big FM are a community radio station, covering areas, including the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida: "It appears someone is targeting English radio stations by jamming their signals," he said "Spectrum FM were also targeted as were Big Radio Spain," said Richie. "We are doing our best to trace the culprit - having installed DF equipment to locate them," said Richie.

Hondón Linen and Luxury Goods held a Winter Fashion Show last Saturday in the village of Hondón de los Frailes. Billie, Stella and Pete turned the shop into a superb Fashion Show with a catwalk for the models. Outfits went from warm winter creations to colourful Christmas fashions. The six models took to the catwalk to great applause showcasing fashion items from the store. The event was compered by Dave Sparks who also provided music to

get everyone in the mood. After enjoying the show, followed by cave, nibbles and cakes, there was a draw for the Grand Raffle. Proceeds from the day were kindly shared with the local Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion for the Poppy Appeal – thus supporting the many veterans in need here in Spain. The afternoon is expected to raise in the region of 400€ for the charity. Billie said it was a great atmosphere and thanked all those who supported them and the Legion on a chilly

November afternoon. Neil Pavitt, Chairman of the Hondón Valley Branch, also paid tribute to everyone who had planned the event and to local people who had come along. “We are exceedingly grateful to Billie, Stella and Pete for generously supporting our veterans”. Hondón Linen and Luxury Goods can be found on Calle Virgen de la Salud 13, close to the centre of Hondón de los Frailes. Information about Branch activities can be obtained from the secretary on: hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.community or by visiting our website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/ hondon-valley The photo shows Billie (centre) and Stella, (left), together with all the models.

Los Montesinos have installed a charging point for electric vehicles in the town. A budget of €8,891 has been allocated, which is partially subsidised by €5,878 by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE). The point is located on Avda de La Marquesa, opposite the Ayuntamiento, where the re-charging of vehicles will be free. Despite the many different incentives launched to promote the use of ecological or electric vehicles in the province there are currently only just over 400 in use in an area that stretches from Denia in the north to the southern outskirts of Pilar de la Horadada with many of them in the use of councils or government institutions.

Walker continued where he left off, opening the singles against an intimidated Williams. Scores of 2 x 100, 140 and a maximum plus the requisite finishes of D2, D16 reduced the scoreline to 4-3, remarkable performance from the veteran. Justice faced a below par Lee Holtham and quickly made the score four apiece with 2 x 97, 100, 126 and 140, both legs completed on D2. The younger Klimonis, despite some impressive scoring, went down two zip to Nikolov closing out on D10 and D8. 5-4.

The third pair was hard to call Joe Miller and Paul Durrant facing the formidable duo of Arold Klimonis and John Walker. Durrants 100, 85, 123 and D14 gave the hosts the advantage in the best of three format. Walkers D6 made it all square, Hyenas enjoying first throw in the third. Miller found the “Lipstick" regularly and closed the leg on D10 for a 4-2 lead at half time. Walker’s contribution was outstanding, 2 x 100, 121, 125 and a 140.

The Hub had league leaders and current champions El Capitan on the ropes this week, deservedly or otherwise, going 6-4 up and needing just the one for a victory and both points, the title chase blown apart. lt wasn't to be, but it certainly looked that way after the three triples, Hyenas taking all three, Bob Taylor finishing two legs both on D2, skipper Simon Williams outing on D14 in the other. The only real response from Nigel Justice with 2 x 100. The match swung El Caps way however in the pairs. Williams and the swearing Bulgarian Alex Nikolov, despite some respectable scores in both legs, couldn't handle Ed Klimonis 2 x 100, 81 and Vycka Bobinas consistency, the latter finishing on D20 twice for a comfortable win. The second pair went much the same way, Shane Deness deadly on the T20 recording 4 x 100, partner Justice,

A free scoring match followed, Durrant versus Deness, the Hyena recording 3 x 100 and D8 for the first. Deness should have taken the second, nailing a 140 and sufficient time to finish the leg. Darts on the wrong side of the wire allowed Durrant to make it 2-0 on the bullseye for 6-4 and at least a draw. Some great scoring from Miller in the eleventh, proved insufficient against a demonstrative Bobinas 83, 135, 100 and the necessary doubles, D8,D10, for 6-5. Klimonis the elder had it all to do to save the match against the consistent Taylor, however a fine performance 95, 2 x 100 and a 0-2 win on D16, D4, gave the travelling EI Caps a well-deserved draw, Klimonis MOTM. The visitors returning 26 tons or over. It’s always a good night when the Toppers and Tiaras get together with no need for an earlier start. Landlord Andy Gildea begrudgingly allowed the Tiaras to have a practice but only if they could manage to throw round his sizeable form propping up the bar by the ockey. Landlady Lisa Ivill and Wendy Hayward were nominated to pick the Tiara team players and sent in Captain Windy de Lacy, Shazzles 'one-arm' Marshall and a snotty Denise Green for the first triple against big boys Graham Solomons, Lee Maiden and a heckling Paul Miller -"what colour would you say the walls are? - I'd call them white-wash". It came down to a D5 shoot out for Miller and de Lacy but Miller had first at it and nailed it. With Miller's taunts ringing in their ears, prediction looked to be spot on as Toppers captain Phil de Lacy nailed D8-D8 for the 2nd triples and one by one, the lads picked off all the games up to the halfway stage despite a one leg claw-back from Patty Poo Schofield in the 2nd pairs. It was a delight when cocky airman Miller faced Pat in the singles and she wiped the floor with him 2-0. A rather tiddly Simone de Lacy then took on her mixed pairs partner, Solomons but lost 2 -1. The chaps took all the rest after that and were grateful to Pat and Simone for doing half the chalking- despite being the away team. MOTM - Hugh Galloway and Pat Schofield. Jesters move up a place into third after the demolition of their compatriots the Queens. All three triples went the Jesters way via Alan Marlow and Stewart Taylor hitting two of the doubles. Graham Cahill 119 and D8 made it 0-4, Jamie Feguson adding a fifth. Dave

Wright increased the score to six at the break. Marlow secured the win and two points in the first single, Taylor making it eight on D16. Lorraine Cox stopped the rot on D14 to earn herself MOTM, Wright continuing the rout, his victim Maggie Morgan. The long awaited “grudge" match figured next, Debbie Wright to face Jamie Ferguson in their fourth encounter, the Jester leading 1-2. A G&T too many for the Queen, made Ferguson favourite and requiring just 111 points he nailed a T20 leaving 51. For some unknown reason his second dart somehow found T20, Downhearted busting the original 111. Jamie Demanding silence, in what can only be described as showboating, he planted his third arrow in T20, claiming “a magnificent 180 ". Sorry to disappoint Jamie but “well done “nevertheless. Matt Cummins completed the match on D8. Loungers, this week, faced the high flying third placed Bullies. As their name implies, the hosts made easy work of the triples and doubles for a half time 6-0 scoreline. Chemies certainly needed the break and tucked into some delicious Bullies fayre. Rejuvenated, Billy Dolling found D16 to reduce the deficit and a possible comeback. The Bullies ignored the script taking all five remaining singles to confirm their title aspirations. Bullies ton total 17, Loungers 15. MOTM Dolling and John Bowden. Don't forget Christmas mixed pairs entries should be delivered to Euronics showroom asap. Competition Dec 19th

Player Spotlight Arold Klimonis El Capitan Lithuanian National, Arold Klimonis is under the "Spotlight " this week, our caption offering proof of his contribution to the family business at El Capitan. The six foot six inch (i’m sure he's taller) thirty year old, is married to Greta, son Jonas completing the threesome. Parents Eddie and Laima, left the Baltics eighteen years ago with little, yes little Arold, for the sunny pastures of the Costa Blanca. Both father and son feature for the champions and current league leaders, whilst pro chef Laima ensures the family and locals are well fed. No good asking Arold for any soccer results, his interest lies elsewhere with the basketball team of Zalgiris, from home city, Kaunas. He and wife Greta like nothing else than a tasty ltalian pasta, followed by an hour or two in front of the tv watching " Game of Thrones ". Throwing a mean 25g arrow himself, our man follows the career of former world champion Gary Anderson, enjoying and mirroring his laid back demeanour. Time permitting, his other love is freshwater carp fishing in one of the numerous lakes available. A holiday to the Pyramids of Egypt beckons in the not too distant future coupled with an annual visit to see extended family in Lithuania.

With an excellent score of 44 points it was Benedicte Kruse alongside Marleen Billen who stood on top of the winners podium after Monday’s ‘2 ball better ball’ competition. Standing just below them were Pat Cassidy and Nora Betts who scored an impressive 42. It was the same format on Wednesday although this time it was the ‘Memorial Pairs Trophy’ that was at stake. Again, with a winning score of 44 points, this time it was AnneMarie Weisheit and Richard Connock who took the glory. With 43, John Dobson and Phil Herrington were a close second followed by Olga Douglas and Paul Brown who managed 42 points. Four ‘2’s today with Phil Herrington getting two of them! The others in the money were Ron Phipps and Jan Svendsen. Friday, and it was the final of our ‘Pairs Match Play Knockout’. Once again Richard Connock, alongside Paul Brown, was on the winning team having overcome Graham Murray and Mike Mahony 5& 4. With 84 points it was John Shervell, Trevor Pulleyblank, Pat Cassidy and Rachel Lee who won our ‘Waltzer 1-2-3’. It was a certain Jim Bishop who once commented, ‘Golf is played by twenty million mature American men whose wives think they are out having fun’.

Montesinos angler at Parco Del Brenta, Italy By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos angling enthusiast John Fisher landed one of his ambitions - when fishing at world renowned Parco Del Brenta Lake in Italy. "It was a re-enactment of the people who I used to go fishing with," said Nottingham born John. John, 73, whose wife Margaret died of pancreatic cancer in March, was in Italy by invitation to fish for carp, under the tuition of fishing expert Frank Warwick. John fished the Lake, on the outskirts of Venice, with Danny Cooper, son of his late friend Andy, who died, aged 60; and also remembered his father, whom he was taught fishing as a young boy. Also in the party was England international fishing star Pete Hollingsworth. "They were all rooting for me. My previous personal best was 13lb - and I caught a 43lb and 33lb 8oz Mirror carp, on baitaboile, on 15lb breaking-strain line," said John. "I'd have been happy to catch just one fish for my Order of Service - ready in advance.

This month a full compliment of 14 anglers took part and as discussed the pegs were changed to have 7 on each side with none on the cross over.

It was Mission accomplished," said John. Frank Warwick, 56, has been carp fishing for 46 years, with a personal best mirror carp of 64lb 6oz. "It's not about the size of fish - it's more about the chase - and how you catch them," said Frank. "To fish with someone of the calibre of Frank Warwick was fantastic. A real gentleman," said John, who took 12 minutes to land his 43lb mirror carp. Picture below shows John Fisher (second, left) with a 43lb mirror carp, landed at Parco Del Brenta Lake, Italy.

Carp R Us Angling Club This week saw Carp-R-Us fish their Autumn Cup match at El Bosquet. To make it a more

The high numbers proved to be profitable with the last 2 pegs providing 1st and 2nd top weights, although there was some blanks the weights were far better than last months with our Belgium friend Willy catching over 24kgs from the very tough peg 13. We weighed Willys best fish at 6.14kgs (13.5lbs). Second placed Russells haul of 16.40 kgs consisted of only 4 fish which averages at over 9lb per fish We also had our first lady angler taking part and to mark the occasion the owners presented Marlene with a voucher for a meal for 2 which was a kind gesture. The results for November is as follows, Willy Peg 13 24.56 kgs Russell Peg 14 16.40 kgs Marlene Peg 9 11.56 kgs Richard W Peg 6 10.04 kgs. The winners in our pairs competition were Willy and Keko with a combined weight of 26.68 kgs. The December competition will be on Saturday 14th, drawing for pegs will be 9.00 fishing 10.00 to1.00 half hour for lunch then fishing 1.30 till 4.30. Entry is 10€ with includes a snack lunch. Tight Lines, Jackie Breslin

even contest no poles were allowed which, whilst this may lead to lower weights, it puts those anglers without a pole in with a better chance. The match was won from peg 40 by Jeremy Fardoe with 8.10kg with Doug Hornblow second with 6.36kg, Geoff

VOYAGER DIVISION

On Friday morning the Broncos were at Emerald isle playing the Outlaws, with a chill wind and rain making the bowls tricky, particularly when the chill reached the bones. Fortunately days like this are quite unusual for us in Spain. Although the Broncos came away without a point, some rinks were pretty close in play.

The Mustangs were also at Emerald Isle, playing the Cavaliers in the afternoon, in the same miserable weather. The Mustangs came away with 2 rinks, which as always is a good away result and as we know results don’t always reflect the extent of the play. Ann C Taylor, Bob Day and Jim Gracie 19-15. Lesley Day, Malc Sykes and Mike Cox 6-29. Sheila Cox, Diane Yates and Richard Lee 13-21. Val Ryder, John Richards and Henry Ryder 10-30. Geoff Jones, Sarah Taylor and Jim Taylor 4-27. La Marina Bowls Club Report by Barry Latham We finished last week with two 10 – 4 and started this week with the same. Great stuff. In the Discovery Div the Pathfinders found their path to E.I. Moonrakers where they did a great job. Sue Daniels, Martin Butler and Alan Wilcox had a tough game but a good win by one shot. The same for John Morgan, Geoff Collins and Mo Taylor winning 21 – 20. Others fared better with Mick Lowe, Geoff Halfhyde and Lorita Rae winning 18 – 11. Not to be outdone John Rae with Dave McGaw and Mike Fitzgerald won handsomely 26 – 9. Overall 107 – 95. The Explorers found their way to San Miguel to play the Alsations in the Enterprise Div beating them 109 – 93. A couple of draws pathed the way with Mike Stone, Phil Pape and Roger Stacey managing 21 - 21 and Cliff Rawlinson, Kathy Manning and Ron Maiden getting 15 all score. The ladies with Shirley Hadaway - Margaret McLaughlin and Maureen Kidd had a nice 20 – 16 victory. Tom Spencer, Jim Manning and Ann Stone (Better than hubbie) won 18 14 while Mr Castle, Jim Reeves and Barbara Forshaw were the top rink with a 21 – 11 win. Cometh the Winter League, cometh disaster. Travelled over to San Luis and lost 12 – 0, can’t remember the last time that happened. To be fair two of our rinks carried a chance of winning right until the last end but the rest of us didn’t make the grade. Oh well nobody died and the weather was lovely. It did get better. Sharks swam over to play Vistabella Lanzadores and continued to swim with rain coming down and the wind blowing only to lose 9 – 5. Some close games with Shirley Hadaway, Jim Reeves and Ann Stone drawing 21 each. Don and Jean Fowkes plus Ron Maiden won by one whereas Captain Tom Spencer, Phil Pape and Roger Stacey won by two. Better still the Seagulls at home played Vistabella Conquistadors and won 12 – 2. The away team were a rink short giving us two points. John Rae, Dave McGaw and Reg Jackson back together won 16 – 15. Dave O’Sullivan, David and Lesley Joynes were victorious 18 – 10. Sue Daniels, Bernie Carr and Jean Tregoing won 26 – 12 and top of the shop Garth Slater, Paul Tregoing and Desna Lowe a walloping 36 – 4. Well done the Selectors.

Spanglish Golf Society Altorreal 20th November 2019. In association with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 16 players visited the established course at Altorreal taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The day started badly with a delay of 30 minutes caused by a serious crash on the A7 and we hope there were no serious injuries to those involved. Play was slow on the day as we were following another society who had also been delayed by the accident but still the day was enjoyed by all. The winning scores were as follows:

Gold Division: 1st Mike Probert 34 pts, 2nd Gordon Longley 31 pts Silver Division: 1st Brian Burnard 30 pts, 2nd Bob Hewitson 26 pts Bronze Division: 1st Jim Speakman 23 pts, 2nd Andy Howard 23 pts Nearest Pins: Mike Probert, Marcus Clements, Raimo Hakuli and John Wherry Football Card Gordon Neve We give our thanks to the Edina’s Grill and Bar for their support and that of our sponsor Sapphire Properties. Our next fixture is the Christmas competition at Las Colinas on the 4th December 2019 followed by the interim day to be held at Vistabella on the 18th December 2019. What Golf Ball Best Suits my game? There are now a huge selections of golf balls available on the market so how do you choose one that suits your game? Below is a 5 step guide that may just help you: Step 1 – You get what you pay for! For fear of losing too many golf balls the higher handicap golfer tends to go for the low prices golf balls with a solid centre and Surlyn cover which feel hard but are in fact harder to control than a better quality (tour model) that has a urethane cover. Step 2 – Don't fix what isn't broken! I find it amusing to see 28 handicap golfers playing with a Titleist pro V1 ball that they found yesterday just because it is what all the top professionals play with BUT which is totally unsuitable to their game simply because they can't generate the club head speed (110mph or faster) so while it is fun to try new balls and technology if you have found a golf balls that works for all parts of your game and your financial budget then stick with it. Step 3 – Don't select a golf based solely on distance! Most higher handicap players will choose a golf ball based on budget or how far it goes but you should all remember that how a ball reacts with short irons, wedges and even the putter is equally as important and once you have selected a ball to suit the short game you can adjust the longer irons and driver accordingly. Step 4 – It's all about the feel! Low amateur and professional golfers will find distance and control benefits in using a higher compression ball technology because they swing faster (110mph or faster) and hence can compress the ball better than higher handicap golfers but the biggest change in recent technology has been for

SMGS at Alenda The 1st Round of President’s Trophy (Spons by MoneyCorp) drew a rather small field compared to other occasions. A number of factors contributed to this (none involving trips up the toll motorway by mistake, the main two being the day’s buggy price compared to other courses the Society plays, and a number of members going away on a separately organised trip. Twenty-eight turned up with 3 guests. Those that did make it found a course in very good condition, way ahead of that encountered in SMGS’s previous visit in March, with the green’s particularly notable for their smooth roll and consistency.

3 categories were maintained, but only 3 prized places given in each. Bronze category players struggled more than Silver, and Silver more than Gold. Neil Oliver won Bronze, an impressive response from collection of the Abacus last week in La Torre. Darren Hancock took Gold.

Silver Category: 3rd Phil de Lacy (32), 2nd Ken Flaherty (33) and 1st , with the day’s outstanding score, Ivan Hanak with 39 points

The stand-out score of the day went to Ivan Hanak. Very discrete in his prize-winning activities of late, Ivan romped home with a superb 39 points and a significant leap up this season’s Order of Merit. The real shock came with the awarding of the Abacus. Those who saw Barry Roehrig’s totally-out-of-character tee shot on the first could only have thought that things would quickly get better. Well, it seems not. Welcome to the majority’s world Baz!!!

Nearest the pins (Sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 3 Paul Kelsall, Hole 5 Steve Ashurst , Hole 13 Darren Strugnell, Hole 16 Darren Hancock. Abacus: (to everybody’s amazement!!) Barry Roehrig. Best Guest: John Reilly (34)

Gold Category: 3rd Steve Higgins (34), 2nd Tony Smale (35) and 1st Darren Hancock with 36 points

The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were

golf ball manufacturers to make a soft low compression core that are just as fast as firmer ones so for the majority of players you will hit the ball the same distance with any model of golf ball hence the reason to select a ball that suits you better around the greens than based on distance. Step 5 – Don't overplay a golf ball! Due to the fact that golf balls cost so much money and due to the fear of losing golf balls, higher handicap golfers try and extract as many rounds as possible from the ball despite being off colour and scratched or scuffed. You should be aware that by playing too long with the same golf ball can affect distance by as much as 5 yards and accuracy with wedges so as soon is if feels rough or the writing is smudged then it is time to change the golf ball.

ran three miles, every night, in a plastic suit," said Gary. "I jumped into a hot bath for an hour - to get from 13st to my lowest weight at Haydock Park, 9st 10lb," said Gary.

"Top jockeys and racing instructors. No one could handle him - except me!," said Gary. "I did my own thing on him, spending hours talking to him, on 10 mile walks. "Then, I'd take him around the 2 furlong ring. I was riding as short as Lester, but stood straight up, like a circus rider, standing on the horse's back. "Holding the reins, with two fingers, while the rest of the string picked grass in the centre," said Gary. Jockey Gary Gibson. Legendary names don't come much bigger in the music and horseacing world, than John Lennon and Lester Piggott. Gary Gibson Lennon has performed worldwide, in tribute to Beatles star Lennon, alongside celebrities, including Sir Elton John and Sir Tom Jones. Former amateur jockey Gary was tutored race-riding by Piggott, arguably the best ever Flat racing jockey, at Newmarket.

"They knew I was taking the piss!," laughed Gary. Gary's favourite jockey was Fred Archer, who died at the age of 29: "He came down with delirious fever/virus. "It must have been brought on by sweating for hours, and drinking 'Archer's Mixture', during eating - to purge his system," said Gary. "One sip would have you running immediately to the toilet. Archer drank it by the sherry glass!," said Gary.

"Lester Piggott just said: 'If you want to do it - you can!'," said Gary.

Archer died on November 8, 1886, having rode 2,748 winners and was champion jockey 13 consecutive years, up to his death.

Piggott, who celebrated his 84th birthday on November 5, rode 4,493 career winners, including nine Epsom Derby wins.

Delirious from wasting and the loss of his wife during childbirth in November 1884, Archer committed suicide, by shooting himself.

Regarded as one of the greatest ever Flat racing jockeys, Piggott's daily diet was a cigar, and sips of drinks, in a quest to reach the top.

Archer too had abstained almost totally from solid food, his diet being half an orange, a sardine, a nip of champagne or castor oil, and a biscuit.

"I lived on a bowl of Cornflakes - then nothing until 6pm - when I had baked salmon with salad, with two glasses of wine," said Gary.

He once went without food for three days.

"That was my diet, every day for four years! And I

Gary Gibson, mirroring both Piggott and Archer, revealed: "I lost so much weight, people thought I had cancer!".

Thader come unstuck as darkness descends CD Murada......... .... 2 CD Thader...............1

L

ast Saturday's late afternoon Preferente fixture, was possibly the worst artificial light conditions I have ever witnessed at a football match, as Thader once again threw away a goal advantage. For the 3rd consecutive match, the men from Rojales went ahead, only for them to come away pointless. Earlier in the season, a victory over Orihuela 'B' was played out on the same polideportivo municipal stadium in La Murada, therefore hopes were high of a repeat performance. Manager Joaquin Mas was deprived of the services of Rafa (suspended) and Rafa Gomez (injured), but he must have been quietly confident of getting a result with the remaining resources at his disposal. When Dani shot over from distance inside 2 mins, the visitors showed clear intent of reversing the

recent losing trend. An x rated foul on Thader's skipper Lloyd quickly followed, earning the culprit a deserved booking. Nino came close to scoring on 5 mins, his effort well saved by home keeper Pablo. Hearts were in mouths on 10 mins, following a shot across the goal by Murada's Juan, which thankfully failed to get the necessary touch. Chamit was the next victim of the hosts hatchet men, as another yellow card was brandished. When a deep free kick was floated to Henrubia at the far post on 25 mins, he should have done better than his weak header, which was easily saved. Four mins later, the same man was guilty of heading wide from a corner. Sergio came to his sides rescue on 38, then again on 40 mins, both occasions requiring top notch saves from Thader's custodian. Before the break, Lloyd hobbled off, replaced by Jorge, who himself was making a return from injury. Vicente produced a peach of a cross from the right on 51 mins, from which Nino stooped low to head firmly into the back of the net. Sergio was showing no signs of the previous week's horror show affecting his confidence, Thader's keeper once again punching clear a long range goal bound effort from Angel on 58 mins. Although Jordi's long range effort on 63 mins was just off target, Thader were running the show. Antoni put the ball in the net on 68 mins, but Thader's sub was rightly ruled offside. How Nino didn't double his goal tally on 72 mins, only he

Torry CF point at Sporting Guardamar By Andrew Atkinson Chief Sports Editor TORREVIEJA CF came away with a share of the points in a 11 draw at Sporting Guardamar on Saturday, in the Valencia 2nd Regional Group 14, denting fourth place Sporting's bid to narrow the gap at the top of the table. chance. It could have been worse on 89 mins, had Jorge not cleared off the line, as Murada were clearly going for the kill.

The men in yellow came to regret that miss, for in poor visibility conditions, a free kick from the left was headed home at the far post by Murada's full back Del Cueto.

With resurfacing work on Thader's pitch ongoing, the game against CFC Benidorm will be played at the artificial pitch.

Another lapse of concentration from a set piece, was to result in the hosts 2nd goal on 80 mins. Diminutive sub Rubio was first to react to a testing corner, his well placed header giving Sergio no

Meanwhile CD Murada beat CD Thader 2-1 in the Valencia Preferente, with goals by Javi and Rubio on Saturday. CD Cox travelled to Hondon Nieves in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 and came away with three points, following an impressive 3-1 win. CD Benijofar and CD Montesinos's head-to-head in the Valencia 2nd Regional on Sunday sees the league title race hot up. Fifth place UD Horadada B travelled to Bigastro CF; Santa Pola City A, in sixth place, travelled to Formentera CF. Daya Nuevo CF hosted CF Atletico Algorfa, Atletico Crevillente hosted Todo Deportivo, in a bottom of the table clash; with third bottom Sporting Saladar hosting CD Dolores. In the 1st Regional REFC Torrevieja hosted CF Popular Orihuela on Sunday; Racing San Miguel CF hosted UDF Sax, Atletico Catral CF hosted CF Castalla. Good spirit at Monte says stalwart Dmitry By Andrew Atkinson Exclusive CD Montesinos stalwart Dmitry Vasiliev doesn't mind how the Valencia 2nd Regional G14 club win - it's the points that count - in the quest for promotion. "The team are playing well and have lost just one game - it's been a good start to the season," said Dmitry, after Monte's 2-1 away win against Torrevieja CF on November 17. The Los Montesinos based club have maintained their form, under new coach Jesus Santander, back on top of the table in a bid to return to the 1st Regional, after relegation last season. "We can always do better. But each week we have played well," said Dmitry. "There are no easy games - and the main thing is that we win, and collect the three points," said Dmitry. "Of course we hope to return to the 1st Regional this season. The hope is there from everyone at the club," said Dmitry. "The players will continue to fight for the promotion all season," said Dmitry. Following caretaker coach Ruben departing at the end of last season the appointment of Santander was made, with new and former players returning to the club for the 2019-20 season. Manu, Morante, Dmitry, Fernando, German, Maccan, Josema, Carlos Lorente, Alfredo, Diego. Luis Toledano, Alex Pamies, Pastor, Santos, Gonzalo, Manu, Nicolas Chupov, Lucas, Diego Barroso and Pepe. "Everything is going well with coach Jesus Santander, and, along with new faces, former players, including Manu, have returned," said Dmitry, 33. CD Montesinos retained the services of goalkeeper Carlos, distancing other interested parties to sign him, the Monte stopper signing a new contract in the summer. "Carlos is a great 'keeper - he demonstrated that last season, when named Player of the Season," said Dmitry. "Carlos continues to be in good form this season - along with all the players - underlining the team are playing good. There is a good spirit here," said Dmitry.
