orrevieja’s Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul will no longer provide services at four of it’s centre’s of worship. In a letter distributed last week by the Right Reverend David Hamid, Suffragan Bishop in
the Diocese in Europe, the church leader announced that the Chaplaincy of Saints Peter and Paul, Torrevieja, will no longer provide worship services in 4 centres in the Chaplaincy, Cristo Resucitado in La Zenia, La Manga, San Fulgencio and Campoverde
(pictured above). The Bishop said that it had been a painful decision that had been reached after consultations with the Chaplain and Churchwardens of the Chaplaincy about the future shape of ministry in this significant parish.
He explained that with only one full-time priest, Fr Richard Seabrook, it was no longer possible to sustain the seven centres of worship and services would no longer be carried out in the four centres. Continued on Page 2

In a letter released to parishioners Bishop David said “The sustainability of the present pattern of 7 worship centres has been under review for some time now. After a full discussion, and with prayerful deliberation, the Church Council has decided that the time has come for a difficult decision to be made.” The Bishop explained that members of the Chaplaincy Council had voted overwhelmingly in favour of this decision, albeit with considerable sadness. He also confirmed that members who, up to this point, had been associated with one of these centres, will continue on the electoral roll of the parish and he encouraged them all to join with one of the remaining centres where worship continues: Lago Jardín, La Siesta or Los Balcones.

Bishop David Hamid Quite whether the decision to withdraw services from the four centres is as a result of financial considerations is not known, but with the Church of England Chaplaincy wholly reliant on the faithful giving of its members to keep its services going it must have been a significant influence. In closing his letter to parishioners he wrote that the Churchwardens and members of the Council are grateful for the support of all members of the Chaplaincy, and particularly for the dedicated work of so many whose work, stewardship and commitment sustain the life of the Church in the Chaplaincy. He said that he was completely confident that in the years ahead, God will continue to bless the congregations in Torrevieja, as the Anglican Chaplaincy continues to serve the English-speaking population in the area. Despite the withdrawal of the Anglican Services from Cristo Resucitado in La Zenia, La Manga, San Fulgencio and Campoverde Church, the four centres will still continue providing religious

Press release
ORIHUELA PLENARY APPROVE DEMANDS FOR A SECOND HEALTH CENTRE Cambiemos spokesman Carlos Bernabe criticised Ribera Salud for waking up only now to the idea of the need for a second health centre in Orihuela Costa less than a year before its concession to manage the health facilities in the area comes to an end C.L.A.R.O. and its coalition partner Cambiemos Orihuela presented a motion in the Town Council plenary meeting on 30 January demanding a second health centre for Orihuela Costa. The motion was surprisingly approved due to a division between the governing parties, the Popular Party voting against and Ciudadanos abstaining. This was sufficient for a majority to approve the motion. Helene Akerman, C.L.A.R.O. President, recalled that C.L.A.R.O. had been arguing the need for a second health centre in Orihuela Costa for years, a need fully supported by associations and those living on the coast. The motion highlights the present situation with long delays in obtaining a medical appointment, long queues in the Cabo Roig centre, and even examples of patients being sent to neighbouring municipalities like Pilar de la Horadada because the
Cabo Roig centre was unable to attend them. It was intolerable, she said, that an area of the importance of Orihuela Costa with a large fluctuating population reaching very high levels during holiday seasons should only have one medical centre with insufficient resources. The head of C.L.A.R.O’S coalition partner Cambiemos Orihuela, Carlos Bernabe criticised the company Ribera Salud which manages the health facilities in the area, including Torrevieja Hospital, for waking up to the idea of the need for a second health centre in Orihuela Costa only now, the year before its concession to manage the health facilities in the area comes to an end, hoping that the concession would be renewed. The regional government, responsible for health matters, has stated clearly that the concession will not be renewed. Both political groups rejected the idea now being proposed by the Popular Party-Ciudadanos governing coalition in Orihuela that an alternative to a second health centre could be a Consultoria, a kind of doctor’s office. The motion calls for the Valencia regional government to commit to opening a second health centre in Orihuela Costa as soon as possible and for the Orihuela Town Hall to make available the land for such a centre in the northern, most populous part of Orihuela Costa to avoid the need for so many people to have to travel large distances with difficulties, including that of inadequate public transport, to attend the Cabo Roig centre.

Dust pollution that hit Murcia similar to 'Mummy' films!
PM10 particle air readings soaring to 130-150 micrograms pcm of air. The threshold is 50.
In 2000 Scientists' measurements in Puerto Rico was approximately 8 million tonnes, one-fifth of the total year's dust deposits.
Underlining the frightening experience, June, who lives in the City, said: "In situations like this buildings go out of sight, due to the dust.
The phenomenon is associated with hot air found over the Canary Islands, known as a Calima, caused by a duststorm, stirred-up by high winds.
In the wake of Cartagena and Lorca Town Councils placing a maximum air quality alert on their cities, Andrew Atkinson talks to June Redden, who lives in Murcia, about the frightening experience when caught up in a mineral dust pollution scare in Gran Canaria,
June, caught up in the Gota Fria in September, and the flooding that hit again during January 20-23, said: "The floods in 2019 and another this year - now the mineral dust pollution. To say we are fed up is an understatement." Cartagena and Lorca Town Councils put in place a maximum air quality alert: "People should take heed of the situation as in Cartagena and Lorca," said June.
"I can remember not being able to see," June, who lived near to the Rey Palace Hotel at the time of the dust alert in Gran Canaria, told The Leader. "I was looking over the balcony and said to my husband: 'I can't see the Rey Palace', reflected June, who had flashbacks, following the alert, as emergency procedures were put in place in Murcia. A cloud of mineral dust arrived in Murcia from north Africa, with
Guardamar arrest for carrying 15 doses of cocaine The Civil Guard in Guardamar del Segura has arrested a man who was carrying 15 doses of cocaine in his car that were ready for sale. The detainee is a 39-year-old man of Argentine origin who is credited with a crime against public health (drug trafficking). The events date back to last week
"We were instructed to get indoors - and seal it." Dubbed as a 'Sorrocco', June said: "Looking at the radar, with regards to the dust pollution that hit Murcia from north Africa, it looked very big - similar to what you see in the 'Mummy' films!".
In the Sahara Desert region of North Africa, the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is the prevalent dust laden deposit of atmosphere, driven over the ocean, above the denser marine air. Thunderstorms over North Africa periodically result in vast dust and sand storms, reaching up to 6,000 metres high, driven out to sea within the SAL.
when the agents observed the man, in the town centre, acting in a suspicious attitude. Under the driver's seat of his car the officers found a small plastic bag containing 15 doses of cocaine, prepared in individual bags for sale. On searching his home they subsequently found more than 2,400 euros, apparently from the sale of the said narcotic substance. After being charged the man was released on bail pending an appearance in court next week.

EU considering scrapping 1 and 2 cent coins Spain said goodbye to its peseta in 2002 and in the near future we might also have to say goodbye to one and two cent coins, if a proposal from the EU is introduced. case seems to be only a mild infection, but we must wait for the next few hours to see if this is the case," he said.
This was confirmed on Saturday by the director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón, following the ministerial meeting for evaluation and monitoring of the coronoavirus.
The positive case is a German citizen who had been in contact with one of the cases diagnosed in Germany. "He had a close contact, very close. Before the case was diagnosed this person had already left Germany to spend a holiday in La Gomera," said Simon.
Simón said that the Spanish returnees who arrived this Friday "are all well" and that "there have been no concerns." "There is not much more information but everything that is taking place is routine," he said. "The Spaniards who are in Gómez Ulla are all healthy people.” The situation in La Gomera is also under control, explaining that "right now" both the positive case and the people with diagnosed with mild symptoms "are all perfectly well". The results of the tests showed that one of them tested had positive for coronavirus, and as a result he was isolated from the rest. Germany has subsequently been informed of the case.
Meanwhile, Italy has not minted these coins since 2018. When the euro was introduced into circulation this was exactly what happened, with many retailers taking advantage in offering products of 100 pesetas to one euro. The withdrawal of these two coins also suggests that there would be painful adjustments that could cause a price increase. As for Spain? At the moment the Bank of Spain says that they currently have no intention in joining the move, but neither does it rule the idea out saying that it is quite possible such an initiative could be put on the table at some point. The Eurobarometer of 2018 showed that 56% of Spaniards are in favour of eliminating the coins and establishing a mandatory rounding up or down, while amongst other Europeans the figure is 64%.

Getting to the bottom of a woman’s handbag!
Monday 3rd - Sunday 9th February, 2020
Happiness is a new handbag!
It’s a sight to behold. As someone who worked in many pubs, I have oft times come to the aid of a damsel in distress whose bag has just been overturned from a bar counter or table and you wouldn’t believe the things you would pick up off the floor – lucky I don’t talk!
Just as the keys clear the pocket, my beloved is standing beside me. You know the look Lads – nothing said! ‘I suppose I had better put some of this stuff back in your bag?’ - I offer sheepishly; ‘how much of it do you need?’ ‘All of it!’ … I’m told with exaggerated sweetness! Don’t forget. The search resumes: Something soft turns out to be a piece of curtain material and a square of carpet. There is a scattering of photos from here and there, with no obvious reason for being transported. A small bottle of perfume is retrieved next, followed by the first of many tubes of lipstick of various colours. There is an open-ended tube of lipsyl with a small sachet of salt stuck to it, but still no keys. Coming up next we have a baby teddy-bear with chocolate raisins stuck to his behind. A notebook with all shapes and colours of pens are extracted, along with hat, gloves and a small purse. I used to think that foundation was cement poured into the ground but here I discover that it comes in jars as well, along with tubes of mascara. Mrs Youcantbeserious doesn’t smoke, but up comes a
mixture of water and common vinegar," said the Councillor for Health, Natalie Dubi. The campaign has been launched by the Councillor for Health, together with the Councillor for Services Joaquín García and the Local Police of Los Montesinos. The campaign is launched to combat the faeces - and unhealthiness caused by the urine of dogs - in the Municipality. "The campaign is to stop the urination of the pets - to avoid stains, odours and the deterioration of the urban furniture - such as the facades of buildings and street lamps," said Natalie Dubi. "We are also preparing an ordinance that will force pet owners to use water and vinegar to dilute the urine, contemplating penalties for non-compliance," said Joaquin Garcia. The campaign has been applauded by a plethora of people within Los Montesinos town and the La Herrada urbanisation - where the dog faeces problem has increased in recent years.
The campaign was launchd by the Cllrs for Health and Public Svcs

Heavy fines for dog owners in Los Montesinos Pet owners not collecting faeces and leaving urination on facades and street furniture face €750 fine By Andrew Atkinson

Bag appears to be empty and still no keys! I open its jaws and give it a really good shake. A shower of business cards, credit card, old concert tickets, scribbled phone numbers, a medicine prescription and assorted receipts floats gently down on top of the pile.
The handbag was designed for the 1920’s woman because she needed something to carry her possessions in. In those days dresses had become skimpier, without pockets and women had growing independence which meant they began travelling without men. This was the start of it Lads!!
I found the mad-red bag on the kitchen table and rammed a hand down into its murky depths – coming back up with the head of our granddaughter’s china doll – brought home to be stuck back on. The next dive produced a screwdriver, followed by a mini umbrella. I dislodged a layer of miscellaneous items which was sitting on a paint colour chart half way down the bag. I feel a bunch of keys at last, but they turn out to be belonging to our daughter’s house - and which we couldn’t find last time in Westport.
637 227 385
By now I am surely near the bottom of the bag – but still no keys. Foreign coins come up from places we’ve been to so long ago that I forget. I shake the bag and think I hear keys, but I cannot pinpoint which compartment. Normally a patient man (ahem!) for once I am beginning to lose it, as I turn the bag upside down on the kitchen floor: More reading glasses tumble out and two pairs of sun-glasses – one with a lens missing. Two AAA batteries hit the deck along with a map of the streets of Dublin and half a dozen Elastoplast of various sizes.
I have come to the conclusion, dear readers that had Robinson Crusoe only been fortunate enough to have a lady’s handbag washed up on his shore, he and Man Friday would have been able to build an aeroplane to fly them off the island! What in the name of all that is weird do women be doing with all the stuff they carry around in their handbag? Lads, how many of you have ever seen the entire contents of a woman’s handbag all out in one pile?
My wife’s handbag acts as her tool-box, filing cabinet, office, medicine cabinet and beauty treatment centre. This was brought home to me the other day when I asked if she knew where my car keys were. ‘Are they not hanging up on the hook? she asked. I gently pointed out that if they were there, where they should be, that would have eliminated the need for this question in the first place. I further added that she was the last person to drive my car. Then came the most dreaded of directives: ‘Check if they are in my bag.’

There are Park areas, vacant land - and footpaths - where many irresponsible owners take dogs walking, leaving behind faeces and urine in Los Montesinos, as in other Municipalities in the Vega Baja. Now, there are no excuses, with free bottles available at the Town Hall in a bid to combat the problem. "Public space belong to everyone - and we must contribute to keep them clean and in safe hygienicsanitary conditions," added Joaquin Garcia. "The Municipal ordinance sanctions for those failing to adhere to the campaign could mean a fine of up to € 750 for not collecting pet faeces and leaving urination on facades and street furniture," said Natalie Dubi.

XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA Andrew Atkinson talks to Felix Albaladejo, proprietor of Garden Felix in Los Montesinos about plant invasive species and pests diseases, ahead of the 2020 Chelsea Flower Show. THE processionary caterpillars in Spain are once again upon us - just one of the invasive species and pests out of control - that will lead to a change in gardens in future years. Future gardening problems have been flagged up facing plants from pests and diseases, including the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, deemed at risk of infecting cherry, hebe, lavender, oak and rosemary. "Xylella fastidiosa is a great threat to Mediterranean agriculture, it is a bacterium that affects multiple plant species such as almond trees, olive, rosemary, vines and oleanders, among others," said Felix. The pernicious disease has devastated the olive groves of Europe - causing leaf scorch, wilt, dieback - and ultimately plant death. In 2018 olive trees in Italy were hit by the deadly Xylella plant disease that spread across the Mediterranean olive growing regions - including Spain. "It is a disease that causes no cure. Only by eliminating the plant - that is the only solution," said Felix. IlSalento, in southern Italy’s Puglia region the disease wiped out hundreds of olive trees, with the number of trees infected with the Xylella fas-

tidiosa bacterium quadrupled. The bacterium spread from its containment zone in the agricultural area of Valle d’Itria to the coastal plain of the Piana degli Olivi Millenari, home to some of the oldest olive trees in Puglia. Spanish authorities reported they had found a Xylella infected olive tree on Spanish mainland, near Madrid. The disease had earlier been discovered on the Balearic island of Mallorca. Xylella expert Alexander Purcell from the University of California at Berkeley said other strains of Xylella were found in all of the other Balearic Islands. Xylella also hit France in spring 2018. The Interprofessional Union of Oleiculturists reported that olive trees on the island had been infected. The disease was found in Corsica and in ornamental plants in the French Riviera in 2015 but, at the time, it had not spread to olive trees. Xylella was introduced into Europe through tropical plant imports from Central America, where it has attacked citrus, coffee, grape and alfalfa crops. The International Olive Council said the Mediterranean Xylella outbreak led to a global drop in olive oil production in 2017.
by climate change and have to find new ways to grow," said Sue Biggs, director general of the RHS. At the 2020 Chelsea Flower show, during May 19-23, gardeners are not allowed to use oak trees or saplings, due to the threat of the Oak Processionary Moth, along with non-native lavender, because of Xylella fastidiosa, established in lavender plants in Europe.
As in Spain, in Britain plants are and will continue to be affected by diseases.
Some Chelsea Flower Show exhibitors have sourced lavender from the continent.

LA MARINA BOWLS by Barry Latham Wembley, Wembley, here we come. Wembley here we come. Come on you Lions. Oops sorry just realised I should be writing about bowls. Three winners being John Morgan, Dave Joynes and Martha Reynolds 15 - 13 plus Jean Perchard, Reg Jackson and Leslie Joynes 20 -14 and top of the shop Dave Taylor, Jim Freeman and Mo Taylor 22 – 10. A rearranged Winter league saw us trave up to El Cid where we came away with some good points losing 8 – 4. Two winners who were Mike Stone, Wendy Latham, Norman Ship and Barbara Forshaw winning 19 – 17 while Shirley Hadaway, Phill Pape, Mike Smith and the Anne Stone won 18 -12. El Cid were 5th in the League and next day we played Quesada who were 4th and had a great result. We won 8 – 4. Nobody got thrashed so we gained the overall score with a great victory by Don Fowkes, Garth Slater, Jean Fowkes and Katha Manning 20 – 7 followed by John Rae, Peter Parsons, Norman Ship and Jan Parsons winning 15 – 8 plus Captain Dave Hadaway, Carol Smith, Mike Fitzgerald and Maureen Kidd 15 – 12 Two days later back at Quesada the Sharks swallowed the Swallows in an exciting match where we won the overall shots by one to give us the two extra points. Don Fowkes, Phill Pape and Hilary Cronk had a good 16 – 11 win whereas Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and the Anne Stone won by seven 20 – 13. Then the men showed how to do it by winning 25 – 10 so well done Peter Parsons, Captain Tom Spencer and Ron Maiden. The Seagulls played away against Greenland Ash and won 8 – 6 to keep themselves in with a chance of winning that league. Garth Slater, David Joynes and Martha Reynolds won 18 – 13 followed by Dave Hadaway, Allan Willcock and Mike Fitzgerald with a 16 – 9 victory. Last but not least came Sue Daniels, John Monaghan and Mo Taylor with a creditable 21 – 9 win.

The Country Bowls Geckos were away to La Siesta Golds on Friday.
The Flamingos were off to San Luis on Monday to play against the Galaxies. A great game ensued and ended with the Flamingos having a fantastic result. Result 12 – 2 with, 154 - 90 The Flamingos were off again on Wednesday to play, a previously cancelled match, up to El Rancho to tackle the Raiders. The weather was much improved but a little breezy. No win this time but a great match nonetheless and played in good spirit. Result 6 – 8, points 93 – 98. A close game. Country Bowls Cubs were at home on Friday, up against the Emerald Isle Outlaws. It was a hard fought game in really difficult conditions but the Cubs tenacity paid off with three rinks winning and overall shots of 105 – 103, giving the Cubs an 8 – 6 win. The scores highlight how tight the match was
Their first encounter ended in a draw so the Geckos arrived at La Siesta with equal measures of respect and determination. The Geckos started slowly and by the half way point it was difficult to tell who was going to be the victors at the end. La Siesta, on their home green played well but as the Geckos got to grips with the rinks they began to put on the pressure. During the second half of the game the Geckos showed their metal and determination to win and pulled away on all but one rink which was a very closely fought battle. At the end, the Geckos were victorious once again with a terrific win of 12-2. The shots were 140 to the Geckoes and 81 to La Siesta. For info visit www.countrybowlsmurcia.com

180 Derek McGauley Hub Hyenas 108 Gameshot Terry Brindley Las Rosas Bullies K.O. Cup this week, eight teams now progressing to the quarters on the 5th March. The remaining 10 teams, eight losing sides from the second round and two from the first, will be eligible for the Auxillary Cup on the same date. Teams will be advised on the draw for both competitions in due course. Entry forms are now available for the Mens and Ladies pairs championships on 12th March, closing date for entries 14th February. C.C.Flyers overcame division 1 side Ale House in a real " see saw " tussle unresolved until the eleventh leg. Current division 2 leaders C.C.'s got off to a flyer winning the first two triples, Cameron Nesbitt gaining the first on D14, plus a ton, Neil Poole making it two on D7. Ale House response just two tons from Alan Havelock and Eugene Lane. A massive 160 from Richard Pattison looked certain to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage, Havelock spoilt the opportunity, hitting D16 for 1-2. Nesbitt paired with Bliss Wright in the first pair, a wise decision as Wright closed on D13 taking the scalp of Havelock and Karl Mallinson. Poole was impressive in the second, recording 2x100 but to no avail, Andre Wing finishing the 601 on D8. Glenn Richardson 113 and D3 made it all square at half time. Havelock recorded a firther ton in the singles, insufficient though as Poole took his total to three with a 120 and D8, giving the Flyers a one leg advantage. Pattison D1 and Kevin Prockter D16 made it 3-6, the visitors now needing just one leg for a cup upset. Wing reduced the margin on D2 after a fine 125. Brian Newton got C.C.'s over the line for a decisive seventh and match winning leg on D20. Jim Gray 100 and D10 made it 5-7 the cup tie already determined. MOTM Andre Wing and Neil Poole. Hyenas made their way into the last eight with a comfortable victory over the Chicks from Ale House. The girls arrived at the Hub just prior to the 8-30 deadline, blaming a lack of local taxis. Some decent scoring from Joe Miller and Bob Taylor enabled Miller to complete the first 701 triple on D4, Leah Chesworth reminding just how good she can be with a ton. A D3 from Jane Chadwick levelled the score for the Chicks and they were justified in believing they should have gone ahead after the third. lt was Alex Nikolov who spoilt the script with a 125 and D6. The next three legs went the way of the Hyenas, Nikolov D20, Paul
Durrant D5 and Taylor D20 making it 5-1, Del " Boy " McGauley proving he can still play a bit with a magnificent 180 partnering Taylor. Their opponents Chadwick and Kevin Molford 100,85 just shy of a finish. Hyenas shirt sponsor McGauley of " The Property Shop "celebrated his maximum with a round of drinks for all. Both Chadwick and Chesworth could have won their singles, enjoying good scoring, the latter hitting 121. lt was however McGauley D2 who increased the scoreline to 6-1, leaving Gareth Bevan to win the tie on a decidedly dodgy D1 against Chesworth. MOTM Derek McGauley and Jane Chadwick. A rare whitewash for the Queens as they were trounced by the Bullies from San Miguel. Terry Brindley checked out on 108, Jem Gledhill not far behind with an 88 out, plus two additional winning doubles. Man of the match Marie Cummins top scored for the Queens on 121. MOTM Debbie Wright and all the Bullies. What a tonic it was to play another ladies team, in what has been a long and bruising season for the Tiaras. Wee Winnie MacKay and her ladies filed in and adorned the sofas in the Tipsy Toad, both teams looking forward to a night of friendly darts. Land Lady Lisa Ivill was the first to open an account with a cheeky D2 in the first of the triples. Super Sue Collins, you'll hear more about her later, answered the call for the Chics, clocking up a 130 and a D7 finish. Lovely. Princess Elizabeth, recently back from her hectic visit to the Emerald Isle took the Tiaras ahead again with a snazzy 90, 81 and D6. Maria Ross from the Chics looked impressive with a 103 but it was our very own Patty Poo Schofield who sealed the deal for the first pairs with another D2. Shazzles Marshall, who though not completely mended, was able to use her right arm to good effect this week with some high scores and her first check-out of the season. Wendy Hayward (76) and Denise (92) gave some resistance to the imressive pairing of Winnie and Sue, but the latter clocked up a second check-out and took the last point of the first half on D1 to bring the score to 4 - 2. A spicey chicken curry and chips propelled the Tiaras to take the

Player Spotlight mark somerville The Euronics spotlight shines on Mark Somerville this week, of Chemies Lounge Bar. Brother Paul runs the other Chemies bar at the Villa Martin Plaza. The family run business started by parents Ted and Anne some fifteen years ago, now prove very popular, with live music five times weekly. The Edinburgh born Scot earned pro soccer status with Cowdenbeath in his late teens before progressing to a scholarship at North Carolina university U.S.A. Two years later he followed the family to the Costa Blanca where he has been for the past sixteen years. Realising learning Spanish could be an advantage, he undertook an intensive two day course in the language, passing with flying colours and now fluent albeit with a North of the border lilt. Mark spends as much time as he can with partner Lara and daughter Lucia, after an exhausting running regime of 10 / 25K five times a week training for the London and Boston marathons. And he also runs Chemies Lounge Bar, what's the secret Mark? lncidentally, the name Chemies was the original name of the Plaza bar run by two former casino croupiers, who dreamed up the title from the French card game Chemin de Fer. A frequent patron to "Fairways" with Lara for a steak and a couple of lrn Bru and then home to catch up on the antics of everyones favourite Love lsland, would be a perfect evening out for the " marathon man". lt's no coincidence being an avid Rangers fan that recent visitors have been Colin Stein, Willy Johnstone and lan Durrant for an upbeat question and answer stint in the Lounge. Rumour has it Andy Goram, formerly with Rangers and Manchester United, will be the next soccer guest. Mark watches all the P.D.C. televised darts, but wouldn't be drawn on a favourite player, only to admit he has to be Scottish. Are we surprised? next 3 legs, with another check-out from Shazzles on her favoured D3, Lesley Eagles on her less- favoured D1 (but better than her hated D2) and Pat on D14, effectively taking the Tiaras first to the magic 7 legs - a really refreshing change for this season! The modelesque Nikki Dean's D8 stole the show from Simone de Lacy to give the Chics a 3rd leg but then a clash of the munchkins between Lisa (jingle jangle) Ivill and Winnie gave Lisa her a 2nd check-out of the night too. Princess Elizabeth Cowan was anchor lady for the Tiaras this week and meant business with 60, 93, 100, 83 but Super Sue Collins had fire in her belly and was hungry for a hattrick which she nabbed on D11, so worthily gaining her the title of MOTM for the Chics. The title could have gone to several of the Tiaras this week and was awarded to Pat Schofield, who got the highest finish of the match on D14. Winnie and Simone are looking forward to organising some more between the Chics and Tiaras later in the season.

What to eat during a round of golf As stated in previous articles on the subject it is vitally important to drink sufficient fluids during a round of golf, especially in the hot summer months when energy drinks (and no alcohol) are highly recommended BUT what should you eat during a round of golf? Experts say that you are 20% what you do and 80 % what you eat and it has been calculated that during a round of golf you will burn between 1070 to 1650 calories depending whether you are walking or in a buggy so you need an energy top up during the round which can take between 4 to 5 hours THE PEBBLE BEACH ProAm on February 6th is preceded by two “fun attractions;” the Chevron Shootout on the Tuesday, where past ProAm champions are paired with top athletes in a competition on the putting green, and the Whiskey Run, on the Wednesday, with celebrities representing Team (Clint) Eastwood or Team (Bill) Murray playing holes 1, 2, 3, 17 & 18 followed by a “wacky awards ceremony” on the 18th green. Prizes go to the winners' favourite charity. AFTER THE INAUGURAL Saudi International Golf Tournament in 2019 with four of the world’s top-ranked golfers lured by lavish appearance fees, European Tour CEO Keith Pelley announced that it would return in January, 2020, saying: “We believe our role will help the evolution of the country.” Pelley can't really believe a country with a human rights record like Saudi Arabia is going to suddenly change because Tour golfers turn up for a few days, ask if the country could perhaps put a hold on the murders while the tournament is on, tuck gigantic cheques in their wallets and go home again. “It was the right decision for our tour,” he told interviewers. Which translates as “We took the money.” The competition was the first European Tour event
to be played in formerly closed Saudi Arabia. Ernie Els said: “I’ve won three times on great courses from Dubai to Qatar to Abu Dhabi, but bringing world class players to Saudi Arabia is a game-changer.” However, the British government warned those travelling to the peninsula this year, and some players including Rory and Tiger declined to compete, Rory declaring that apart from human rights issues he preferred playing in the US. Henrik Stenson however, said:“The Middle East has been my home for a number of years and the way you are welcomed is second to none.” Depends on how much money you've got Henrik. After warnings that Saudi Arabia's water will run out in the next 25 years, building golf courses wouldn't seem such a good idea. However, Saudi is ploughing on into the 21st century, and the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club will host its first ever tournament for women in March. No, they won't be wearing Burkhas. TO BOAST TO YOUR FRIENDS that you beat the Worlds' No. 1. golfer must be the dream of every golf-loving schoolboy, so when 15 yr.old Josh Hill from Surrey beat Brooks Koepka in an 8 hole practice match for the Abu Dhabi Championship he was understandably cock-ahoop. The teenage amateur, who competes on the Middle East-based MENA Tour, said happily: “I learned a lot from Brooks, he's so nice, you can ask him anything,” oblivious to the sound of teeth grinding behind him. RENOWNED COURSE DESIGNER PETE DYE, who died last month aged 94, played from an early age on the 9-hole golf course designed by his father at their home in Ohio. Together with his wife Alice, like him an accomplished amateur golfer, Pete designed over 100 golf courses in countries including Britain, Italy, Switzerland, China and naturally the USA. TPC Sawgrass and Kiawah Island are two of his triumphs, and Whistling Straights will play host to the Ryder Cup in September. Many of his course designs were inspired by his travels; his use of pot bunkers and double greens were as a result of his visits to Scotland. Pete Dye was called by Greg Norman “The Picasso of Course Design,” though having seen some Picassos I wouldn't take that as a compliment. Until next time: Happy Golfing. KLOPP FOR THAT! Give us a break
Vintage National Win will leave Trevor in the Clouds
Jurgen Klopp - and his first team squad - won't be turning up for Liverpool's FA Cup fourth round replay against Shrewsbury on February 4, due to a winter break. “In April 2019 we got a letter from the Premier League, I think, where they asked us to respect the winter break and not to organise international friendlies or competitive games. We respect that," said Klopp, after Liverpool's 22 draw against the Shrews on January 26. "The Premier League asked us to respect the winter break. That’s what we do. If the FA doesn’t respect that, then we cannot change it," said Klopp. Klopp said Liverpool u-23 manager Neil Critchley will be in charge for the replay: "We will not be there,” said Anfield gaffer Klopp. Liverpool were caught up in a similar situation in the EFL Cup against Aston Villa, when Critchley took charge, due to the first team playing in the Club World Cup in Qatar. A statement from the Football Association said: "The FA went to great lengths to create an annual mid-season player break, working closely with the Premier League and its clubs. "It is a new and significant addition to the English football calendar and is designed to benefit clubs and their players. “To accommodate the annual mid-season player break, the FA rescheduled the Emirates FA Cup fifth round to midweek and removed fifth-round replays from the calendar. "This allowed the Premier League room in its calendar to have a split round of fixtures over two weekends. “Prior to start of the 2019-20 season, all clubs accepted that Emirates FA Cup fourth-round replays, where required, would have to take place during the first week of the mid-season player break. "This will only affect a small number of clubs, due to the split of Premier League fixtures in the mid-season player break.” In Liverpool's case they are now set to get a 10-day break, between the FA Cup fourth round replay Shrewsbury game on February 4, and their next league
Give us a break. Klopp won't be at Liverpool's FA Cup fourth round replay against Shrewsbury. fixture on February 15. If Klopp carries out his stance and rests first-team players, the break extends to 13 days. Southampton have the shortest break, in terms of football free days, nine, between their scheduled FA Cup fourth round replay against Spurs on February 5, and their Premier League game on February 15. In contrast Chelsea and Manchester United have the longest breaks - 15 days each. The 2019-20 Premier League winter break comes into play, splitting one game-week across two weekends on February 8 and February 15. Five games will be played on Saturday, February 8 and the remaining five games will be played on Saturday, February 15. The Scottish Professional Football League sees the SPL have a winter break, during December 30-January 17. Managers have campaigned for a winter break, as by all other major European leagues. The break will benefit players for the second half of the season, especially clubs in the Champions League and Europa League, mirroring Italy and Spain, ahead of Euro 2020, giving the national side a better chance of success. Having put a winter break in place, then to implement an FA Cup replay in the break, is an own goal by the FA. In a nutshell, teams are not on a level playing field, a concept about fairness. Not that a player has an equal chance to succeed - but that they all play by the same set of rules. As for the controversial VAR implemented this season only in certain competitions and leagues - that's a whole new ball game!
a lot quieter but still fishing well. I took around 70 kg of fish in 5 days mainly sea bass. The freezer is full and I have lots left to give to friends. Tackle is simple spinning with feathers and 5 hooks and it is not unusual to hook into 2 or 3 fish on one cast. Sizes vary from 200 gms to1.5kg. So watch the weather forecast and treat yourself to a good days fishing. The calm after the storm! We are hoping to do some trout fishing mid-February, a few hours’ drive inland. You will need a fishing licence for Castillo La Mancha for this. I will keep you updated on this at a later date.

Vintage Clouds 2020 Grand National bid
TREVOR Hemmings is eyeing a FOURTH £1m 2020 Randox Health Aintree Grand National winner with Vintage Clouds at the world renowned Merseyside track on April 4. "Vintage Clouds is a very good horse - very steady," said Octogenarian Mr Hemmings, 84, who was successful in winning the Aintree showpiece in 2005 with Hedgehunter, repeating his success in 2011 with Ballabriggs and completed a trio of successes, when Many Clouds won in 2015. Owner of Championship football club Preston North End, Isle of Man based owner Mr Hemmings, CVO, will be hoping Vintage Clouds can score another victory, to add to his tally of National winners. Vintage Clouds, is trained by Sue Smith, wife of Showjumping legend Harvey, who said: "After consideration we decided to enter Vintage Clouds for the Grand National." The decision came in the wake of Vintage Clouds winning the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park in January: "Having won so well in the Peter Marsh Chase we kept our options open. "We discussed it at length with Trevor - and decided that we would enter the 2020 National," she said. "Vintage Clouds jumped superbly in the Peter Marsh and has come out of the race very well," said Sue. Vintage Clouds fell at the first fence in the 2019 Grand National - and pulled up in the Becher Chase in December - at Aintree. "Vintage Clouds has struggled slightly over the Aintree fences, notably in the Becher -

Fishing Tips to fill your Freezer By Peter J Walkden, Costa Blanca Fishing Here are a few tips for you anglers out there. Some of you may be aware of the fish farms off the coast of Campoamor. They hold stocks of lubina/sea bass and Dorado/sea bream. Both very good eating fish. As is regularly the case, last week's storms and high tides caused many escapees which make their way to the shore line. Unfortunately such days don't come along very often, but they are well worth keeping in mind. The perfect time is when the storm as past and the seas become calm once again. These fishing days last about a week, and the mornings make the best fishing. I had the beach to myself Thursday and Friday, taking approximately 15 kg of sea bass each day, fishing for three hours only. I was shocked to be greeted on Saturday by 30 fellow anglers, none of whom where English. By 11 am they all had buckets full of fish. Same thing happened on Sunday. Monday was

We fished the Eden stretch of the Segura for the final round of its Winter Series. Going into this match four anglers were in the running to win the series and on a warm day with a good flow on the water a good match was expected. Unfortunately, fish being fish, although there was only one dry net, weights weren’t as good as expected. Clear first on the day was Steve Fell with 7.68kg from peg 17, second was Alan Priest with 4.10kg from peg 6 with Geoff Tempest (peg 13) third with 2.58kg and Steve Collins (peg 15) fourth with 2.50kg. This means Steve Fell won the series with 162 points with Terry Screen second with 155 points and Richard Crawshaw third with 151 points. Well done to everyone who took part in the series. Gordon Elliott trained 10 year old Tiger Roll, 5-1 favourite, tipped when winning in 2019, became the first horse since Red Rum to win back-to-back Nationals. Elliott has made a staggering 18 entries in the National, more than any other trainer, including noted Delta Work and Champagne Classic. Fellow Irish trainer Willie Mullins has entered 10 horses, headed by Irish Grand National winner Burrows Saint, and noted duo, Cadmium and Total Recall. Native River, Sizing John, One For Arthur, Bristol De Mai, Walk In The Mill and Kimberlite Candy are amongst the plethora of 100 plus entries. Sir Alex Ferguson co-owned Give Me A Copper, trained by Paul Nicholls, and Wales Rugby Union star Jonathan Davies coowned Potters Corner, are also noted entries. The 2020 Randox Health Grand National weights will be announced at St George's Hall in Liverpool on February 11.

No surprises as Thader fall to League Leaders CFI Alicante .................3 CD Thader.....................0
CFI Alicante aren't top of the Preferente division by luck, they are a class act, fully deserving this double over a shell shocked Thader side. Having said that, Thader did have their chances, especially early on. What's more worrying for manager Jose Ruiz though, is that his inexperienced side have now slipped into the relegation zone. Although there are still many more points to play for, it is now imperative that maximum points are achieved against lower placed teams. Inside the very impressive Antonio Solana stadium, Thader started off brightly, emulating the glorious sunny Alicante sunshine. CFI Alicante are the phoenix club of former div 2b side Alicante FC, disbanded in 2014 follow-
ing serious financial problems, now on their way back to former glories.
Although hot favourites to win the division, Alicante should have fallen behind as early as the 5th min.
A superb assist by Calderon found Jose in space, only for Thader's number 9 to force the hosts keeper into making an important save. There were strong penalty appeals 3 minutes later, justifiable as Honrubia looked to be bundled over in the area, but alas ref Ibanez saw it differently. Up the other end, Jero shot wide from an acute angle, but it wasn't long before he would make amends. On 23 mins, Jero crossed from the right, perfectly onto the head of the unmarked Obele. CFI's bald striker made no mistake from virtually a foot or 2 from the goal line, giving keeper Jose absolutely no chance. From their next attack, CFI had the ball in the net again, but thankfully a linesman’s flag for offside, meant that this one didn't count. Wave after wave of CFI attacks came to nothing, thanks mainly to Thader's disciplined offside trap.
If the ref had an uneventful 1st half regarding the use of cards, he certainly made up for it in the 2nd. His first booking arrived on 50 mins, signalling a steady procession over the next 40 minutes. Obele thought he'd scored a brace which was ruled offside, but it only delayed the inevitable. CFI substitute Pedro chipped shot from 20 yards was tipped over by Jose. From
the resultant corner, Thader's defensive clearance went straight to Sergi out on the left wing. Sergi wasted no time in finding an unmarked Obele at the far post, a simple tap in making it 2-0 to the hosts on 85 mins. A second yellow card for Juan, harshly so in my opinion, saw Thader's defender troop off the pitch somewhat dejected. Down to 10 men, it was no surprise
