killed almost 2,500 people, preventative measures were put into effect at Alicante-Elche airport on Friday following the arrival of two passengers, both of whom were residents of Torrevieja.
The unnamed duo had been on board a cruise ship in the Far East that was infected with the deadly virus. The pair underwent tests by Sanidad Exterior, following their arrival at Alicante-Elche airport, which fortunately proved to be negative.
They were amongst hundreds of passengers quarantined by coronavirus on the cruise ship that had earlier docked in Cambodia. They are now back at their home in Torrevieja. Continued on Page 2

Government information stated that two Norwegians, who reside in Torrevieja, were quarantined during a cruise, where a contagion - the communication of disease from one person to another - was registered upon arrival from Amsterdam.
Meanwhile an Englishman was hospitalised in Denia after falling ill while visiting a relative. The individual complained of a fever, difficulty breathing and vomiting before doctors decided to test for the coronavirus. His results are not yet known although the patient himself said it is just a precaution.

Earlier, Spain had confirmed its second case of the coronavirus this month. Spain's National Microbiology Centre confirmed the case stating that it was detected in Mallorca.
In Alicante the Judicial courts have postponed the oral hearing of a case due to start on Monday because of the quarantine of five of its defendants due to the coronavirus, two of them in China.

The Spanish Health Ministry said the infected person was one of four suspicious cases admitted to the Son Espases University Hospital in Palma de Mallorca.
The case involves 26 people who are accused of failing to pay taxes on the sale of footwear, between 2005 and 2009, from sales in the polygon of Carrús
Elsewhere in Spain the main effect would seem to be on Spanish ports where the arrival of goods has suffered a notable decline due to paralysis of many ports in China. "The effect is now becoming noticeable in Spain," said one importer. The main association of the sector, Anesco, which represents port workers, confirmed the downward trend on Saturday warning that, if the situation persists in the coming weeks, the activity in the largest Spanish ports will fall to as little as 30% of it’s normal levels.

Rescue Centre now at rock bottom!
O
nly a few weeks ago Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre reported that they were ‘experiencing the worst pressure they have ever been under in the 11 years they have been up and running’. Despite the fact that many people responded kindly with offers of help by volunteering and donating they desperately need more as - yes - the situation has deteriorated! Sue Weeding reported previously that they owed €20,000 for forage above the €2,000 or so that they have to pay every couple of weeks for a new delivery of hay. They had started to reduce this amount and had got it down to €17,200 with donations they have been receiving but then the bomb fell earlier in the week! Sue said ‘the suppliers of the forage have asked us to pay the remaining money we owe now, we totally understand but are completely devastated as we just don’t have this type of money’. The huge forage bill is not a normal occurrence and is due to the devastation caused by last September’s horrific storm. Many people rallied around to help and support the Centre back in September but they have not received some of this help to date. One example of this generosity came from Austria, where a very kind person heard their cries for help and he encouraged many farmers to donate hay from across Austria and Germany and a local Golf Society with the help of some others, generously paid for the trans-
port which totalled €3,150. The money was paid to a transport company but the hay delivery was not forthcoming and the company are not responding to letters or phone calls. A second case of fantastic support had come from Norway, where a wonderful man organised for not one but several loads of hay to be transported from there to the Centre with a much needed tractor and water pump too but the Spanish Government have said that 21% IVA (tax) must be paid as it is not ‘a crisis situation or humanitarian need’. The Charity Shops have been a vital source of funds which have kept the Centre going but the IVA tax on all the donated items that are sold is adversely affecting the takings and literally taking essential resources from the ‘horse’s mouth’ So basically all of this is adding even more pressure to Sue and Rod. This hasn’t come about through bad management, it is through a series of extreme circumstances beyond the Centre’s control but ultimately the ones who will suffer if they cannot get out of this dire situation are the animals. EHCRC are not only rescuing animals from desperate situations but are continually striving to influence the local and national authorities and law makers of the country to try to make changes to animal welfare in Spain. The 120 so very deserving horses, ponies and donkeys and the other rescued animals too need your help and support so please give as generously as you can. Anger at continuing delay in reopening Municipal Sports Centre
A
t a meeting in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall on Wednesday, coordinated by C.L.A.R.O., the Sports Councillor gave explanations as to why, after nearly a year since it was first closed, the Sports Centre has still not been fully reopened. As a sign of the strength of feeling on the subject, the meeting was full to overflowing. The councillor explained that some facilities have been progressively reopened due to the presence of Town Hall Janitors, but the swimming pool remained closed. It could not be reopened without qualified life guards who could only be recruited in the context of a new overall contract for the management of the centre. He could not say when a new contract would be concluded. After his explanations, there was widespread dissatisfaction over his failure to say clearly when the centre would be reopened and fully functioning. Heated protests came from Spanish and non-Spanish residents alike. They expressed real concern that elderly people needing the pool for therapy would be deprived of this facility, essential for their health, for well over a year. In any case, the lack of facilities for the disabled to use the pool had to be corrected. It was outrageous that school children had to go to neighbouring municipalities to have swimming lessons. It was made clear that the Town Hall could act when there was a will. Life guards were recruited for duty on the beaches during
3 Torrevieja beaches back to normality following storms Antonio Vidal, Torrevieja’s Councillor of Beaches of the City of Torrevieja, has said that he has completed the repair and conditioning tasks of 3 beaches following storm Gloria. They are la curva del Palangre, La Mata and la playa del Acequión. Vidal said that repairs in the area of la curva del Palangre were extremely urgent due to
Easter and summer. As one participant said, the excessive and unnecessary delay was because people in Orihuela Costa were considered second class citizens. On Friday, in Orihuela the issue was followed up in a press conference with C.L.A.R.O. President Helene Akerman and Javier Gracia, a councillor from the Cambiemos-Podemos-Claro group. They denounced the continuing delays in having a fully functioning municipal sports centre. Helene Akerman described the indignation expressed at the meeting on Wednesday in Orihuela Costa and the real sense of deprivation felt by residents. Javier Garcia said his group had been denouncing the fraudulent contract well before it was cancelled a year ago. The government had had ample time to plan to fully reopen the centre. He revealed that according to the Town Hall’s own plan for future contracts, a new contract for the management of the sports centre in Orihuela Costa would not be possible until October at the earliest. The anger and frustration at the Town Hall’s management of the municipal sports centre in Orihuela Costa seems, unfortunately, likely to continue for most of the rest of the year. It comes on top of the anger and dissatisfaction at the state of Orihuela Costa in general, dirty streets, inadequate rubbish removal service, potholes everywhere and parks and gardens which are mainly a disgrace. The Last Minute
T
he young well-dressed lady was sitting on the end of the row of theatre seats and was nervously fiddling with the catch on her handbag laying in her lap. Once more Samantha, known as Sam, looked around her trying to find where her companion was. She had known him for some time as they worked together in a local solicitor’s office. However, this was the first time they had been out on a date together. She started thinking ‘I have been stood up before but never in a theatre.’ Just along from where she was sitting, in fact there were just two empty seats between them, was a smartly dressed man, who she guessed was in his early twenties. Very briefly ... two pairs of blue eyes holding the gaze a little longer than necessary, made her feel a little uncomfortable although excited. She sensed he had the same trouble as herself as he was also constantly looked around him as if searching for someone. The houselights dimmed indicating there was five minutes before the start of the show. People started to hurry to their places as the auditorium started to fill up. She searched the seats once again to see if her friend had sat in the wrong place - but there was no sign of him. Again, as they both looked around their glances met and held momentarily. He seemed to shrug his shoulders, she did the same and smiled.

The last minute had arrived, as the band in the orchestra pit went into their well-practised routine bringing an end to the wait for the show and its music to start. The lights slowly went out. Sam quickly looked around her whilst she could still see but to no avail, she noticed her newfound acquaintance was doing the same. It was during the first part of the musical when Derek moved his seat and shared an arm rest with Sam. The pair sat side by side enjoying the beat and rhythm of the music also the stars on the stage singing, while twirling around the floor in their dance. Finally the interval arrived. The lights were revived. They looked at each other, their eyes once more locking together this time with less embarrassment. Both laughed, trying to dispel the slight discomfort between them. Most of the audience were making their way to obtain refreshment and were filing past and going up the few steps to the exits which lead to the bars and other parts of the building. He went to get up saying “I should go back to my seat.” “There is no reason why you should.” She was looking up at him and smiling. He returned her look as he sat down again, telling her his name. He went to take her hand. Suddenly. She felt it was too soon and started to withdraw hers and with a change of mind let him hold it. With hearts hammering they were both lost in their own thoughts as he made himself comfortable in the seat. Both realized someone was standing next to them in the aisle. They looked up at the same time to see a young woman dressed in a light grey suit. “So! I see you found yourself some company … couldn’t you wait for me?”

Sam went red in the face as she looked up at the other woman, then she heard Derek saying “Sam … meet my sister Evelyn.” Letting go of Sam’s hand he turned his attention to his sister. “I’d given you up I thought you weren’t coming.” “Sorry I met an old friend in the foyer, it’s been years since I’ve seen him, and we got talking – anyway I’m here now.” They both glared at his sister feeling awkward as neither of them wanted her to be with them. The pair sat side by side enjoying the beat and rhythm of the music
Sam looked up at her and forced a smile. “His name wouldn’t be Ian Watson … would it?” there was a little silence between them, as Evelyn nodded her head. Sam then added “If it is, I have been waiting for him. I suggest you go back and join him, we are quite comfortable and tell him my patience ran out at the same time that the lights went out.” Percy Chattey, Author - www.percychatteybooks.com

WWI helmet offers better protection than modern designs
The iconic World War I French Army helmet has proven to be more effective in protecting the brain from shock waves from nearby explosions than modern military designs. According to tests carried out by medical engineers from Duke University in North Carolina, the French Adrian helmet is far better than modern designs in the protection against nearby explosions, despite significant advances in protection against ballistic impacts. Researchers created a system to test the performance of World War I helmets; United Kingdom / United States (Brodie), France (Adrian), Germany (Stahlhelm) and a current combat variant from the United States (Advanced Combat Helmet). They placed different helmets on the head of a doll equipped with a number of pressure sensors. They then placed the head directly under a shock tube, which was pressurized with helium on which a membrane wall exploded, releasing the gas into a shock wave . The helmets were tested with shock waves of varying force, each corresponding to a different type of artillery projectile that exploded from a distance of one to five metres. The amount of pressure suffered in the crown was compared with the risk tables for brain injuries showing that the risk of someone wearing a French "Adrian" helmet from around 1915 was less than that of any of the other helmets tested, including the modern advanced combat helmet. “The main difference is that the French helmet had a crest at the top of its crown. While it was designed to deflect shrapnel, this feature could also deflect shock waves.”said Op 't Eynde It could also be that, because the pressure sensor was mounted directly below the crest, the crest provided an additional first layer to reflect the shock wave. The investigation could help to improve the explosion protection of future helmets by choosing different materials, stratification of multiple materials of different acoustic impedance or altering their geometry.

A plan to stop the flooding in Los Alcazares Los Alcázares has submitted to the regional government the first project aimed at reducing flooding in the so-called ‘municipal zero zone’, as it promised to do during a meeting with the Community president, Fernando López Miras, which everyone hopes will put an end to the serious flood problem.
Being unable to locate the victim was postponed in order for the court to try to locate her. In case of not finding her, the trial will be held without her testimony, but with production of expert evidence and that of the agents who processed the complaint.

In the absence of a response to the original report, the Síndic repeated its request by letters dated 3/09/2019, 10/16/2019 and 11/22/2019, without response. On Tuesday, 11 February, the Síndic then sent a registered letter to the mayor of Orihuela to inform him that "if after 10 business days he does not send the requested report, his lack of response will be declared an obstacle to the investigation and will be denounced to the Fiscal Ministry." This project consists of the extension of the rain channels in the centre of the town, an area that has suffered 5 floods in the last 3 years.
Reacting to the article the mayor said he was deeply disasapointed that the Ombudsman had released a statement to the press without making contact with him first.
The new rainwater network will connect with the channel behind the IES Antonio Menárguez Costa. This is the one that receives the "overwhelming" rivers of water when torrential rains occur and once it is filled it ends up flooding Los .

The prosecutor's Office is asking for eight years in prison for a married couple who are accused of raping a woman they met through the Internet 18 months ago. The events took place in the home that they share in Torrevieja.
The mayor, Mario Cervera, has confirmed that "the City Council has complied with that agreed during the meeting held and now it is the turn of the Autonomous Community to fulfil it’s obligations.
The trial, which was scheduled for Tuesday, had to be suspended because the court was unable to locate the victim, who is a foreigner and has returned to her country. The prosecutor asked that in in the
He said that "this is the first of many projects that the town hall intends to implement in the absence of measures provided by other administrations." "We cannot remain impassive while other administrations sit back, as the lives of my residents and the future of the municipality are at stake. Stopping floods is an absolute priority for us."
One of the most developed agricultural sectors in the Valencian Community, that of Pilar de la Horadada, is seeking a greater police presence in the fields and greenhouses surrounding the municipality. Farmers have constantly warned of the frequency of theft of machinery, especially generators and pumps, and they say that the situation is just getting worse. As such, representatives of the agricultural sector were summoned to a meeting by the mayor and the Councillor for Agriculture, José María Pérez Sánchez, together with the organisations and security forces responsible for surveillance in rural areas. The meeting was attended by teams of the Civil Guard, who are specialised in the work of Security in agricultural areas, Local Police and Civil Protection, and covered a variety of subjects including surveillance, monitoring and control in rural areas However the Civil Guard stressed that without formal complaints being made, police reinforcements cannot be provided in the area, so they urged those affected to register each robbery with a formal denuncia.
Catalan Ombudsman threatens Orihuela mayor
Farmers remarked how complicated it is to make denuncias at the police headquarters in Torre del Pilar, something that can see a delay of several days. The mayor said that the local police theft surveillance unit will be changing it’s patrol patterns so that all Local Police shifts are able to carry out surveillance tasks in the agricultural terraces.
The Catalan Ombudsman of the Valencian Community, Angel Luna, has formally warned the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, that he will be denounced for disobedience unless he sends, within ten days, a report that has been requested on 3 occasions.
The Councillor for Public Safety, Marina Sáez, said that “We are an agricultural town, an industry that generates 20% of our employment. We have many hectares of fields, crops and greenhouses, and theft and damage causes significant loss which puts the sector at risk”.
The High Commissioner of Les Corts has already said that he would denounce to the Prosecutor's Office those who, repeatedly, fail to respond to his requests for information, thus hindering research work in defence of the rights of citizens. In a statement, the department stressed that article 502.02 of the Criminal Code states that any authority that hinders an investigation of the Ombudsman, Court of Accounts or equivalent bodies of the Autonomous Communities, will be punished for "the crime of disobedience." In the case of Orihuela, the officer making the complaint went to the City Council in May 2016 to file an appeal for review of administrative acts and in three years "has not received any response." Therefore, in 2019 he went to the Síndic de Greuges, and requested that they seek an initial report from the municipal administration.
The complainant failed to appear in court event of not being able to find her, the statement that she made be reproduced in the courtroom. According to the indictment the couple invited the victim to spend a few days at their home in La Mata after meeting her through the

Constant change is here to stay… ‘The people voted for change:’ this is what you hear now every day from political commentators and people in pubs right across the country. Most of you will be aware that we have just come out of an election in Ireland. Actually, we haven’t ‘come out of it’ yet – and may not do so for some time to come. Ireland currently enjoys full employment, our economy is booming, (growth is twice that of Britain) Simon Coveney negotiated a postBrexit deal, far more favourable than might have been expected, but only 1 per cent of the electorate took this into account … and ‘the people voted for change!’ In the interests of balance, it has to be said that our health service – with people spending long periods on hospital trolleys is a scandal; as is the fact that young couples are finding it so difficult to afford a place to live. Will the ‘vote for change’ actually change any of those problems? Worryingly, the vote for change is more likely to change what’s good about the country than solve the problems. I pray that this column is proved wrong on that prediction. We are not alone in wanting change in Ireland: Britain voted for change too. There is a ‘mood for change’ right across Europe – not to mention the dramatic change in the politics of the United States of America – where lies and vulgarity is spewed out like an old town crier. Fake news and outrageous propaganda is the side-step towards dictatorship – and this scenario is not so far-fetched any more. Change happens anyway but rarely the above sort of radical change. Voting for change is the easiest thing in the world, but how many voters took the time to project their choices into the future? Most latched onto one aspect of the change – such as immigration, and decided to throw out the baby with the bath-water. In both the Irish and British elections, large blocks of voters cast their ballot out of a personal sense of grievance, or out of ‘revenge.’ ‘So what, if the thing goes belly-up, everybody will be in the mess together and we’ll start again.’ This will be scant satisfaction for the ‘told-yousos.’ My late younger brother was the elected mayor of a small Canadian

city. He holds the record for the longest serving mayor, having been elected for four consecutive four year terms. In three of those elections, Bill romped home with around 80 per cent of the vote. The last time he ran it was different and my brother just scraped in by around eighty votes. I went to Canada to help in the canvass, (Ah Lads … that’s not nice!) and what I remember is that Billy had to defend every decision he had made over the previous twelve years, (the mayor runs the city) whilst his opponent ran his entire campaign with just three words: “TIME FOR CHANGE!” Get it? As we stated already, change happens anyway, but normal change is subtle and gradual. Somebody once said something to the effect that every day is the same, but when we look back they were all different! Dramatic change is dangerous. Our old friend, ‘the law of unintentional consequence’ comes into play and will have a field day. We are often told that history has a habit of repeating itself, but how many prominent people – or voters for that matter, keep an eye on this truism?
beginning of time until then. We have to keep an eye on history and not get radical, or even restless. When life and limb are safe and ‘the thing is going OK’, we should be content.
Between about 1910 and 1930, there sprung up a contagious restlessness which spread across Europe. The people, like now, voted for ‘change’ and by God they got it. For millions that change meant death. For most of the rest, ‘change’ was not the sort of change they envisaged and few nations remained unscarred.
Finally, let’s hope that the ‘people who voted for change’, will not, through that vote, impose any life-altering change - other than the certainty that they will leave us with less change in our pockets!
Most of the current claims being made by those seeking a vote for change during these turbulent times are factually incorrect and often downright dishonest. In fairness, lies are not quite as blatant from our politicians in Ireland as they are in some countries we value as friends. But making promises that are undeliverable is as big a lie as any. Our greatest apprehension in my country is when we see the ballot-box in one hand … and the other hand hidden inside the coat pocket! Yes, dear reader, we shall all experience much change. There have been more changes in our lifetime that there had been from the

Therefore, this subject will be taught by teachers who hold a specialty in English in Valencian institutes who may collaborate with the teaching staff of other subjects, such as Technology or Computer Science. Students will work on projects, which will include research, creativity, decision making, the use of strategies and communication in different formats.
Digital Culture to be taught in English Digital Culture to be taught in Secondary schools in English Next year, secondary schools across the whole of the Valencian Community will offer the new optional subject of Digital Culture. The subject will be taught in English and will focus on promoting "the conscious and safe use of social networks among students" in order to combat incidents such as cyberbullying The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports said on Monday that it is preparing the content for this new subject as an optional subject in the ESO stage starting next year.
A spokesperson from the Ministry said "It is important to promote this subject because we live in a digital world in which technologies have modified our way of relating and communicating, with each other of accessing new opportunities and, of course, of training professionally." Likewise, they continue, it is a subject in which it is intended to give "special emphasis to the training of students in regard to the prevention of school cyberbullying, as well to the knowledge of security strategies". It will be a subject that will emphasise the "conscious, safe and responsible use of social networks by students and in the prevention of addictive behaviours in their use". It will also be used to develop capacities for the future of the world of work in the digital age, as well as learning to detect false content and fake news. As the contents have a direct relationship with the proliferation of information from a global world in which the use of English is dominant, the subject will be taught in that language to ensure contact by students in an established way due to the large proliferation of English content in digital environments.
There will also be collaboration by an expert research team in transmedia content and digital identity, as well as the advice of experts from the National Police on issues related to cyberbullying and technological crimes, added the Department in it's statement.

Freesias, with white considered to be the most fragrant, vary in yellow, orange, red, purple, mauve and pink, along with striped varieties of each colour. Native to South Africa, where Freesias grow wild in the winter, grow best in a sunny, south-facing position and are in bloom already in Costa Blanca and Costa Calida areas. to the Costa Blanca winter climate. The best time to plant the corms in Spain is in the Autumn, as they will produce flowers from January, through to April, growing up to a height of 16 inches, an ideal length for a cut flower. Freesias, traditionally used to convey friendship, the traditional flower for a 7th Wedding anniversary, are grown for their scented oil, used in perfumes, bath oils, soaps and lotions. *Following last week's article on Processionary caterpillar hairs, that can cause death and severe injury to animals, and itchy skin infection to humans, Felix Albaladejo Andreu, from Garden Felix, Los Montesinos, said: "You have to be very careful with animals. Number of sparrows in cities reduced by up to 60%
T
he number of sparrows has been reduced by up to 60% in four years due to the replacement of natural grass with artificial grass in parks, according to researchers from the Institut Cavanilles de Biodiversitat y Evolutiva Biología of the University of Valencia and the University of Alicante The common sparrow is a species that has been associated with humans since Prehistory. However, since the beginning of the twentieth century, its population has fallen dramatically in rural and urban areas throughout Europe due to factors such as urban pollution, lack of space to nest, difficulties in finding food, diseases and predation.
parks (grass, bare soil) with other artificial components (concrete, artificial grass , areas for dogs, pavements). Of the 32 Valencian parks that were studied in four different locations, major changes were carried out in ten of them. However, in both types of parks, both those that were remodelled and those that stayed the same, the abundance of sparrows was similar at the beginning. In the parks that remained the same the population declined 15%, while in those that underwent change the decline averaged 60% in the same period.
In central London, today it is practically extinct, while in 1925 records speak of more than one hundred million birds, according to the study.
In their investigation, the universities were asked to suggest new urban planning policies with the urgent need to conserve the common sparrow and other birds.
An article published recently in the Urban Ecosystems magazine is the result of a study carried out over four summers, between 2015 and 2018, showing the impact of replacing the soil in
Their proposal was to use using native trees, or grass species that require less water consumption for the parks, which would increase the number of invertebrates available for the support of sparrows.

Re-union of Torrevieja tap dancing group Sofistikats By Andrew Atkinson Exclusive
Stagestruck Summer Show
like this before!
The Haunting of Hogsbottom Manor is the unlikely title of the Stagestruck summer show, which will be performed at Teatro Cardenal Belluga, San Fulgencio, from 21st to 23rd May.
Reserve on stagestuck.show@gmail.com or call What’s it about? Well, 695 092 181 Jeremy Amberton buys a haunted theatre – and attempts to put on his own play, The Haunting of Hogsbottom Manor…and that’s all we’re going to tell you.
Rehearsals are proving to be a riot for this very funny show, which also contains some terrific dance routines and some of your favourite songs…including supercalifragilistic...you know the one. Only you’ve never seen it done
Tickets are available at Cards and More, La Marina, The Post Box, Doña Pepa, Quesada and The Card Place, Benimar.
Cardenal Belluga Thatre Group
However this year has been hard due to the early flooding in our area and most important the loss of our director with illness. We have a group of good members and require more. If you feel you would like to join us you will be welcome. The money we collect from shows go to our local charitys on La Marina and San Fulgencio. We are looking for Technical personel for lighting, sound, props, and of coarse actors singers, comedians, and dancers to join our own group.
We had our annual meeting on 15th February to find that we will continue to run the theatre group as before but with more attitude to get the show sorted in less time.
If you feel you would be back stage to help with costumes you are also welcome. We are back at the Community Centre on the 15th Febuary at 2pm.We would like to see you. This is situated next to the Health and Tourist offices on Urb La Marina.
A re-union meeting at the La Laguna Hotel recently took place with former members of Torrevieja tap dancing group 'The Sofistikats', Ivy, Star and Sylvia. "The Sofistikats were a tap dancing group, based in Torrevieja for many years, with the principal being June Peters, with 100 pupils of various ability, both male and female," Sylvia Smith told The Leader. "June was an excellent teacher, who not only taught the pupils to dance, but gave them a sense of pride in themselves," said Sylvia.
Re-union of former members Ivy, Star and Sylvia. Photo: Andrew Atkinson
Twelve students were chosen to become The Sofistikats, Showgirls (pictured) who performed for charity in the Mike & Marie shows at Los Arcos: "The shows were very popular," said Sylvia. Due to ill health, June returned to England several years ago, and Mike and Marie are sadly now deceased. Recently, Star visited Spain on a trip from England and met up with Ivy and Sylvia, who are both resident in Spain. "We reminisced about the many happy years we had performing with Sofistikats - including a calendar shoot we did in 2014 for Charity," said Sylvia. "Over 8,000 euros was raised and copies of the calendar were sent worldwide. The money was used to buy two baby incubators for the Vega Baga Hospital," said Sylvia. "A very fond memory was when the Showgirls went for a weekend to Benidorm and whilst there, we went to see a Drag show. "The girls pretended it was Ivy's 'Hen' Night - she was invited to go on stage and dressed her as a nun. She was included in a sketch with the Drag Queens!," said Sylvia.

Country Bowls Club
Another victory for Country Bowls.
with Dennis Wade, John Mallet & Den Birkett
The Cubs travelled to San Luis on Friday afternoon and were met with a very strong team.
Arriving on Monday in the basking sun were Emerald Isle Saturns to play against the Flamingos.
Good playing Geckos.
You all stepped up to the mark and gave a fantastic result of 14 – 0.
With shots of 151 – 44. Country Bowls Flamingos did it again! A massive well done to you all. Proud Captain and Vice Captain yet again. On Friday the Vista Bella Picadors faced Country Bowls Geckos. There were some close rinks but by the end of the day the Geckos fought with their usual determination and won with the score of 10 – 4. Shots 107 – 83.
Vistabella Bowls
by MonteStan
The match was played in great spirit and the Saturns put up a good fight but as always the Flamingos were on top form. With some team members not being available to play and reserves being called up, a great big round of applause for the Flamingos.
Another Monday with blue skies and warm temperatures, listening to some Spanish locals, I heard they were worried about whether it would mean higher temperatures in June and July. Lets hope not ! Anyway I digress. The Enterprise Div. saw the Albatrosses obliterate a strong San Miguel Beagle side 14 – 0 with 130 shots and 71 against. The Drivers in the Discovery Div. away to San Miguel Bulldogs nicked a cheeky win of 8 – 6 shots 103 – 93 with some very close scores. In the Voyager Div. the Eagles away to La Siesta Pioneers just got pipped 6 – 8 with 88 shots for and 105 against. The Wednesday Winter league saw Vistabella at home to San Miguel losing a tight match 5 – 7 with shots for 84 and against 96. Friday saw the Lanzadores Southern div. A. at home to San Luis
Most rinks were struggling early on the fast surface but the Cubs fought back to get a credible result getting beat 8-6 and 109 shots to 105. Testament as how close the game was, the game was played in good spirit and in lovely sunshine. We face another tough away match at Greenland’s Elms. In the Enterprise Div the Explorers were at home to San Miguel Alsatians. Unfortunately we didn´t win but in the main we played quite well losing 10- 4. The couple of winning rinks were Cliff Rawlinson, Jean Fowkes and Janet Parsons 18 -15 and Don Fowkes, Phill Pape and Hilary Cronk. We lose Phill Pape now as he and Marylyn go back to the UK and then onto Australia. No Winter League this week. Can I remind everyone that it is Club Finals Days on 7th and 8th March. Come along and cheer folk. It is always good when you have a crowd watching. Two good results to end the week. The Seagulls played at home against E.I. Roundheads and had a 10 – 4 victory. Dave Hadaway, David Joynes and Stephen Syddell won 22 13 then John Morgan, Tony Langford and Leslie Joynes won 22 - 9 whereas Garth Slater, Bernie Carr and John Monaghan won 19 – 13. Last and certainly not least John Rae, Reg Jackson and Mo Taylor had a great win of 30 – 13. Same league but DivA saw the Sharks playing away at San Miguel Bulldogs where they had tremendous 112 – 103 win. So well done. The winning rinks were Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and the Anne Stone 18 – 14. Likewise Peter Parsons, Tom Spencer and Margaret McLaughlin won 28 – 17. Don Fowkes, Phill Pape and Kathy Manning achieved a good win of 19 – 11 despite someone having a wrong bias. Cliff Rawlinson, Jean Fowkes and Janet Parsons claimed a creditable draw.
The Matadors away at La Siesta had a good result against the Golds. Winning on four rinks and drawing on one rink well done to Lynne Armitage, Don Cleeter skip Ronnie Cairns, Tanya Oliver, Jan Gatward skip Jack Burrell, Mike Farrelly, Margaret Finlayson skip Barry Watson, Pauline Merry, Danny King skip Chris Merry and the drawing rink Sheila Roberts, Bill Judd skip Phil Goble. Shots 119 – 79, Points 11 – 3 Away at Emerald Isle Neptunes for an afternoon match another good result for the Matadors. Winning on three rinks and the overall shots. Well done to Paula Cleeter, Jan Gatward skip Phi Goble, Lynne Armitage, Don Cleeter skip Ronnie Cairns and Sheila Roberts, Margerat Finlayson skip Graham Smyth. Shots 105 – 88, Pts 8 – 6 WINTER LEAGUE - Monte Mar v San Luis At home to San Luis as expected it was a tough match. We only managed to win on two rinks well done to Jean Chamberlain, Jan Soars skip Neil Crawford and Tanya Oliver, Desiree Freeman skip Chris Merry. After the match we all enjoyed lunch at the Belfry. La Siesta Bowls Club Quesada Bowls Club by Alan Carr The Blues (Division B) travelled to the Emerald Isle where they were entertained by the Claymores, this game could have gone either way on a couple of rinks, because the scores were so close but when the game finished the Blues only won on one of the rinks hence losing 2-12 (Shots 82-109). Winning team; Sylvia Pryke, Ramsey Sinclair & Brian Fraser (16-15). Same Division the Golds were playing host to Montemar Matadors hoping to pick up as many points as possible but found that the visitors were too strong on four of the rinks, the Golds achieved one win by; Wendy Ralph, Tony Campbell & Alan Mawer (2114), with Skip Sue Jordan´s team getting a well-deserved draw (17-17) final result 3-11 (Shots 79-119). Ann & Robert Heath with Harold Charleton (15-10). Good play by all with the game ending 4-10 (Shots 87-102). The Pioneers (Voyager Division) welcomed Vistabella Eagles to La Siesta, there was some great play by all of the teams which seen four rinks going very close, with the last end determining which team was going to achieve the win, but unfortunately for the Pioneers four rinks got pipped at the post but our other two rinks were won convincing by; Ken Stringfellow, Pat Moore & Sue Jordan (22-9).Ann Edgerton, Wendy & Alan Ralph (22-12). Result 6-8 by winning the overall Shots 105-88. In the Winter League Bonalba were at La Siesta where we had a good day by winning two rinks and securing a further 2 points for the overall shots 77-72, the game ended with both teams sharing the spoils collecting 6 points apiece. the essential d12. Nigel Justice 2x100 and a tasty 89 out swung the score " Caps " way, partner Arold Klimonis helping out with a ton. Bobinas and Ed Klimonis, couldn't cope with a score barrage from Eyre 123 and Joe Miller 2x100, Eyre wrapping up the 601 for 3 each at the break. An excellent pasta dish, compliments of the boss Mrs Klimonis, was devoured in haste during half time, unsurprisingly the famished but portly Hyenas eat the majority. 3 tons from Denness ( he's never scored 30 ) and a 32 game shot, overcame Eyre 100, 140, for the 1st of the singles, the " Caps " now one ahead. Lewis repeated the win against Miller for 5-3, the match looking ominous for the visitors.

March 5th is the 3rd round of the K.O.Cup and the 1st round of the Auxiliary Cup, captains have been notified. The following week, 12th March, features the Men’s Pairs, to be played at C.C.'s and the Ladies pairs at Hi Life. Both competitions will play to last 4 pairs. Finals 9th April. Registration by 8-15 latest, play commences 8-30. Hub Hyenas concluded their season with an away defeat to champions El Capitan, but what a match. A 57 tons or more haul from the game was the highest I've witnessed in the eleven year history of the league. A total of 26 for the "Caps" 15x100, 6x ton plus, 4x140 and a 180. Hyenas contribution, 16x100, 4x ton plus and 11x140. They're a formidable bunch of shooters the "Caps,"every player recorded multiple 3 figure scores, as did each of the Hyenas, but their finishing just edged out the former champions. The triples was won by the visitors, John Rodford completing the 701 on s20, d20 after 100, 140, Paul Durrant finding a 140 for partner John Eyre to close on d8 in the third for a 1 leg advantage. Ed Klimonis smashed in a 180, setting up Vycka Bobinas for d10 in the second leg. Ginge Lewis paired with Shane Denness, he of "Pork Pie Hat" fame, in the opening doubles, the latter doing the scoring, Lewis supplying

A former teacher of maths and economics in an all-boys grammar school, Phil played guitar in the school band ‘Stace de Lace and the Lacettes’ before becoming a ‘rozzer’ for the next 26 years.
The match now at least a draw for the unbeaten champions now had their "talisman" Justice to face Durrant each requiring the win for opposite reasons. lt was a real " ding dong " , they shared 6x140 and 6x 100 plus the odd 26, Justice winning the 1st, Durrant levelling and Justice the 3rd after gifting 3 darts to the visitor for victory but failing to capitalise. Bob Taylor completed the match with 4 tons against a spirited Bobinas 140, 100, performance. A wonderful match and a superb advert for Euronics Thursday darts. MOTM Justice and Durrant. The Queens enjoyed an early lead playing the Depot boys, unfortunately it only lasted until 8-45pm. Rachel Broadhead championed the charge on d1, with Debbie Wright managing a whopping 156 in the second and a distinct possibility of going 2 up. The dream however was short lived as Richie Roger fulfilled his own by finishing the second with his 1st arrow. With dreams over the nightmare began, as the Jesters reeled off the next four. Matt Cumminsd4, Graham Cahill d7, Alan Marlow d1 and Jamie Ferguson d14 finding the doubles, Dave Wright finding plenty of trebles. The next 6 went the way of the Jesters, the best of the bunch being Cahill's bull finish after100, 115. Lorraine Cox missed her chance of victory over Wright who completed his 501 on d2 MOTM Graham Cahill and Rachel Broadhead. Milos cemented second spot with a nice away victory over Trinity Panthers. Despite being all square after the first 6 disciplines, Milos managed to win 5 of the remaining 6 for a comfortable victory. Harvey Lane accomplished 2 game shots plus 120, 125, 140 and several 80+'s to earn himself the MOTM award, whilst Chelsea Campbell, despite losing to Lane in the singles, was outstanding for Milos recording 112, 121, 125, 134 and 2x100. Johnny Gilchrist wasn't far behind with 4x100, 125 and a singles victory over Michelle Lane. Campbell was Milos MOTM.
He served in the Met Police at several London stations and notable highlights of his career were an invite in for a cuppa with Maggie Thatcher and a 999 call to an American lady’s house to help start her washing machine! -as luck would have it, he had exactly the same one and she was mightily impressed. He happily swapped his truncheon and handcuffs in 2009 to peruse his hobbies of golf and sailing before retiring to Spain in 2010. Phil represented the Met Police and Rosslyn park alongside the likes of former Lions player Martin Bayfield
His keen love of Rugby began in his teens and he played for several teams including the Met Police and Rosslyn park alongside the likes of Martin Bayfield. He now just watches from the sofa on Saturdays when the Mrs is at Bingo. He spends his days doing The Telegraph cryptic crosswords, Kakuros and a bit of gardening when he’s not out golfing. Captain of San Miguel Golf Society, he enjoys a round every week but not buying one in the bar afterwards. He also plays in the Plaza Golf Society. His greatest love is his dog Rio, a rescued Belgian Mallinois who gets the first greeting every morning. Captain of the Tipsy Toad Toppers, he does watch the darts on TV but has no particular favourite. Pat Schofield (100), eventually found her form and beat Toppers captain, Phil de Lacy (that's him in the spotlight) 2-1. Lelly Bear Eagles (100), absent from the pairs, rallied in her singles but couldn't topple Galloway who checked out D1, 16-D16. Andy Gildea did his best to noble the Tiaras captain, with offers of vodka but captain Windy (108) 4-12-D19, D6 kept it together, eventually getting the Tiaras their other point of the match. Best play came from the diminutive Ivill's finish in the 2nd leg of her triples against Maiden (140 x 2. 137, 100). On 113 she went out T19 - 16-D20 to rapturous applause from everyone and earned herself MOTM. The Tiaras awarded the same to Graham Solomons who played a blinder in the final knockings against Eliz Cowan.
Cup Draws 5th March K.O. Cup Quarter Finals
I suppose we should expect a crushing defeat from the team in third place but when you're married to half the team, it still comes as a bit of a surprise when they trounce you. The Tiaras offered very little by way of opposition in the first 6 legs, only Lisa Ivill (98) and Sharon Marshall (97) approaching anything like 3 figures, until Eliz Cowan flurried in the 3rd pairs with 98, 122 but missed her favourite D5. Lee Maiden got his first 140 of the night, Andy Gildea 141, Graham Solomons 2 x 100, 121 and Hugh Galloway's 121 showed that they meant business and weren't taking things easy with us.

WESTERN MOVIES For those of you of ‘advanced’ years you will understand what I am about to say and for those younger, just ask your parents. Do you remember those Saturday afternoon matinees at the ‘flicks’ where you went to see your film favourites such as John Wayne, Alan Ladd and Randolph Scott in the good old western movies? Although the films were different, the theme was the same, boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again and all while fighting the bad guys. Now I want you to use your imagination again and you should consider your golf swing and thoughts to be like a western movie. The good guys are fighting the bad guys and in this case the ‘girl’ is enjoyment success and satisfaction. In terms of your ’swing’, the good guys are the key fundamentals for good golf of posture, grip and alignment and the bad guys are usually too strong a right hand grip, bad posture over the ball, poor alignment, not releasing the club from the top and deceleration of the club head. All of these will cause inconsistent and poor golf resulting in the, slices, hooks, pulls, duffs, thins, shanks and total misses that you see every day on the golf course. In terms of your ‘mind’ the bad guys are negative thoughts, bad attitude, lack of focus, over stating your own abilities, low confidence, poor preparation, anger and fear and the good guys are a good attitude, positive thoughts, relaxation, calmness,

"Magic of Light has plenty of tactical speed. He's stepped up to the mark since he's gone over three miles.
Grab a piece of Candy at 20-1 in Aintree Grand National TOM Lacey, trainer of Kimberlite Candy, carrying 10st 4lb, is full of confidence of a good account in the 2020 Randox Health Aintree Grand National, priced at 20-1. "He is in good order - a much stronger horse now - he's really come to himself this year. "I thought he was very impressive in the Classic Chase, insofar the way he galloped to the line," said Lacey. "He'll go straight to Aintree. All his best runs have been when he's been fresh. He's full of confidence, so we'll look forward to it. If we get a wet spring, I don't see any reason why he won't go there as a live contender," added Lacey. Jessica Harrison trained Magic Of Light (16-1) in National ante post betting, ran at Navan on Feb 16, finishing last of eight, behind Cracking Smart and Tiger Roll, who finished fifth, in preparation for the 2020 Randox Health Aintree Grand National on 4 April. “A much stronger horse now - he's really come to himself this year,” said trainer Lacey of Kimberlite Candy.
I'm really happy with him." Magic Of Light, Irish trainer Harrington’s firstever runner in the Grand National in 2019, will carry 10st 12lb in 2020. Despite finishing last at Navan, there are many positives to take from Magic Of Light's credentials, underlined when always prominent in last year's National. Magic Of Light stumbled at the 15th - the Chair but went on to lead narrowly at fence 25, over the gruelling 4m 2f race. Hard pressed, two out, Magic Of Light blundered again, and was headed at the last. However he stayed on strongly, beaten 2 3/4 lengths, by Tiger Roll, under jockey P. D. Kennedy. Anibale Fly, owned by JP McManus, trained in Ireland by Tony Martin, carries 11st 2lb and will be bidding to improve on finishing fourth and fifth, in the 2018 and 2019 Nationals.
Nicky Henderson's entries include Ok Corral, 10st 9lb; Beware of the Bear, 11st; Valtor, 10st 4lb; and Dragon D'Estruval, 9st 13lb: "OK Corral and Beware The Bear would be the two to aim at it," said Henderson. "I don't think Beware The Bear will go to Cheltenham. He needs a run - but I don't think Cheltenham is the place to get ready for the National for him. "OK Corral might go straight to the National, we'll see," added Henderson.
Tiger Roll trainer Gordon Elliott has 18 entries in the 2020 National. County Meath based Elliott's entries include Champagne Classic (10st 6lb) and 2019 Galway Plate winner Borice (10st).
Paul Nicholls entries include Yala Enki (10st 11lb), Saint Xavier (10st 4lb), Warriors Tale (10st 4lb), Romain De Senam (10st 2lb), Give Me A Copper (10st 1lb), and As De Mee (9st 10lb).
Entries also include noted Bristol De Mai (11st 8lb), trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies; and Willie Mullins-trained Irish National winner Burrows Saint (10st 10lb).
"I've hit six entered - and might run three or four the main two are Yala Enki and Give Me A Copper," said Nicholls. "Yala Enki will be ridden by Bryony Frost. Give

Seve, winner of five Major championships during 1979-88, the Open three times and Masters, twice, returned to Royal Lytham in 1988, to win again. Seve, born in Pedrena, Cantabria, Spain, part of the European Ryder Cup five times winning team, both as a player and captain, turned pro in March 1974, aged 16.
Former world number one, winner of 90 Major international tournaments, including five Major championships, Seve was famed for playing with no fear.
Seve, who retired in 2007, embedded in the World Golf Hall of Fame, winner of a record 50 European Tour titles, affectionately named his casa in Spain 'Royal Lytham'.
At the 16th hole at Royal Lytham, in the final round, Seve encapsulated his first Major. He had only hit 9 of 72 fairways across his four rounds with his driver.
Colin Maclaine, chairman of the 1979 Open committee said: "Seve preferred his own course, which mainly consisted of hay fields, car parks, grandstands, dropping zones - and even ladies clothing!".
At the 16th tee - a blind shot - Seve, having a two shot lead, hit his drive, which veered off to the right - ending up in a temporary car park. A huge crowd flocked to find Seve's ball, with the man himself finding it underneath the front bumper of a blue Sedan car!
Tiger Roll, 5-1 favourite, bids to mirror legendary Red Rum's trio of National victories, to become only the 2nd horse ever to win on three occasions. Tiger Roll carries joint-top weight of 11st 10lb, with a rating of 170, the 2018 and 2019 winner, saddled at the top of the Handicap, alongside stablemate Delta Work. In 2019 Tiger Roll become the first back-to-back winner of the Aintree Grand National since Red Rum won in 1973, 1974 and 1977.
LMTCC open 2020 season against Madrid By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC played their first competitive game of the 2020 season against Madrid 1st in a T10 fixture at La Manga Resort, under newly-elected captain A. Alger. A. Alger (capt/wk), T. Knowles, J. Kinsella, T. Culshaw, C. Rumi, P. Singh, K. Wood. P. Harvey, Am. Singh, Ar. Singh, C. Wood.
Turning the clock back I have returned to Royal Lytham, a drive away, from my home city Preston, to reminisce on golf's most beloved son, Seve Ballesteros.
Seve, aged 22, made four birdies in the last five holes - risking all - as he played his round on the greens.
Colin Tizzard saddles Native River (16-1) and Elegant Escape. Assistant trainer Joe Tizzard said: "Elegant Escape is capable of being placed in Ladbrokes Trophys and Welsh Nationals, but he's not quite a (Cheltenham) Gold Cup horse. If he got into a rhythm he could go well in a National."

SPAIN late, great, golfing star Seve Ballesteros remains the only golfer to win two Claret Jugs at Royal Lytham and St Annes in Lancashire.
Seve, who completed a second of four courses of chemotherapy at Madrid's La Paz Hospital in February 2009, won his maiden Major triumph at Royal Lytham in 1979, with his second round 65 having put him into contention for glory.
Me A Copper goes very well fresh - so will go straight there. He's got a lovely weight, only 10st 1lb," said Nicholls.
Seve, the first Open champion from the Iberian Peninsular, became the first continental European title winner since 1907. Royal Lytham 2019 was the first of Seve's three Open titles.
Seve was granted a free drop away from the cars, in an area with flattened rough - due to it doubling-up as a car park.
At the prizegiving ceremony, Seve, diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in 2008, who died of brain cancer in 2011, aged 54, said: "I play good from the rough. I have plenty of practice!".

San Javier football star Marta s hat-trick in Serie A By Andrew Atkinson Exclusive SAN Javier born Spanish capped womens football star Marta Penalver scored a hat-trick as Serie A Futsal Cagliari defeated Ragusa 6-1 away, to gain a third consecutive victory. "The win at Ragusa consolidated Futsal Cagliari's position, and more importantly a play-off place, ahead of the game against Grisignano," Marta exclusively told The Leader. "Futsal Cagliari have both a strong frontline and a solid defence, with two goals conceded in the last three games," added Marta. Against Ragusa, Futsal Cagliari took the lead through Marquis, deflected by Pernazza into the net. Marta gave Futsal Cagliari a 2-0 lead, before Ragusa netted through Rebe, to trail 2-1 the interval. In the second half, goals from Bruninha and two goals by Marta, completing her hat-trick, and Dayane completed the rout. "I think that, here in Italy, I will have scored three or four hat- tricks, although I really do not remember them exactly," said Marta. "The one that I remember is this last one against Ragusa - which has surely helped to get the three points for the team," said Marta.

Encouraging despite defeat for lively Thader Callosa Sports...............2 CD Thader.....................1
El
Palmeral stadium was the setting for Thader´s 3rd of 4 consecutive trips on the road. Another glorious sun soaked Sunday greeted players and fans alike, excited at the prospect of what promised to be an entertaining match at Callosa. Due to the hosts reseeding their pitch, original fixtures were reversed, resulting in Thader disappointingly losing the October encounter in Rojales quite badly. Since then, Callosa have been on a good run of form, currently lying in 7th place,
although they did come unstuck against Benferri last weekend. Thader meanwhile, have recently hit a purple patch. At start of play they sat just outside the drop zone on 23 points, a far cry from the barren run of not so long ago. However manager Jose Ruis was only too aware that his side needed to extend their impressive unbeaten run, or risk being dragged back into the dog fight. Veteran striker Rafa Gomez had still not recovered from a recent knock, whilst key players Nino and Borja were suspended for 5 bookings. The game itself saw Thader rather quicker out of the blocks than their hosts with both Alvaro and Calderon bringing good early saves from Tur in the Callosa goal. But then, against the run of play, after gathering a loose ball on the edge of the area, a powerful drive from Ivan beat Sergio just inside his post to put the home side in front. Honrubia really should have levelled on 20 minutes but he rather bizarrely headed wide from just 2 yards, when all he had to do was direct the ball on target. But still Thader continued to ‘boss’ the game, looking far more comfortable in possession
than Callosa. Cristian shaved the post with a blistering drive just short of the half hour mark before a half volley from Alvaro fell just inches wide of the mark. And that was the way it stayed until the end of an entertaining first half with, despite the pressure, the visitors unable to break down their hosts. Callosa extended their lead after Ivan converted a cross from Saura midway through the second period and moments later things could then have got even worse but, when just a toe poke was required, Chica’s low effort across the box evaded all. Thader manager Jose Ruis had rather too much to say for himself at this stage and was removed from the dug out by the referee but as he made his way to the stands the the visitors were handed a lifeline when a well worked move saw Perello slot
home from close range. Honrubia then missed his 2nd ‘sitter’ of the afternoon with yet another misguided header. But it was yet another encouraging performance from Thader which hopefuly bodes well for their visit to table toppers Villajoyosa CF next Sunday. The game is likely to be a Sunday am ko but check the club Facebook page for confirmation.
