So despite Community President Ximo Puig saying earlier in the week that he was very much against the mandatory wearing of facemasks the measure has now been introduced across the whole of the Valencian Community in all public and private spaces where there is a gathering of people who are not living together, even if they are able to maintain social distancing. However the measure will not be mandatory on beaches, swimming pools, natural spaces and in the mountains or whilst playing sport. She said that the obligation to use the masks, "refers to hygienic and surgical masks covering the area from the nasal septum and including the chin." She added that masks must also be worn on terraces and in restaurants when food and drink is not being consumed. "When sitting at a table on a terrace we must still protect ourselves," she stressed. Speaking of the outbreak in Gandia the minister said that 49 positive cases have been detected after an outbreak of family origin has so far spread to different social contacts. She warned that the administration “will act in the same way in all other places where similar circumstances occur." She thanked the Gandia Council and the mayor, Diana Morant, for their collaboration. Barceló pointed out that "not all of the measures" recommended by Public Health are being applied. She said that many of the infections are occurring in places such as pubs and discos, in addition to other social activities and events such as birthdays and funerals. King pays tribute to victims of Covid-19

The king with his daughters, Princess Leonor and the Infanta Sofia.

“We must look to the future with respect and understanding,” King Felipe The king told over 400 mourners on Thursday that Spain has been given "a lesson of immense value" and a spirit of self-improvement during the pandemic and has asked that people now start working together, with "respect and understanding", so that we can all look to the future with "confidence and hope” Felipe VI made this appeal in the civil tribute to honour the victims of Covid-19 in the Courtyard of the Royal Palace, where he told relatives of the more than 28,000 deceased that "they are not alone in their pain." "It is a pain we all share. Your grief is ours, It is here before all Spaniards. Pain and grief in which we also all feel ourselves," added the king. Don Felipe admitted that the commemoration cannot mend the sadness of those who have lost a loved one, but it will ensure that "they will remain in our memories" and that we "will not forget them."

The king went on to say, "The moral debt and a civic duty bind us all. Let us work together, using all our will, our capacity, our knowledge, all our effort and the strength to be able to look to the future with confidence and hope. And let's do it with respect and the understanding". The event was attended by members of the Government and state powers, all the regional presidents, party representatives, except Vox, and the heads of EU institutions, as well as Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and the Infanta Sofia. It was a service that has reflected "the respect and the highest solemnity of the State" in its tribute to the victims, according to Don Felipe. He said that the majority of deaths have been of older people who were part of a “commendable” generation that contributed to "building our democratic coexistence day by day." In his speech, he expressed his "immense gratitude" to the thousands of people and groups that have worked on the front line during the pandemic in favour of others, to whom society "owes much more than they can imagine" for having sustained the pulse of the country. "Their actions have shown the best example of the civic and moral values ??of our society and the best reason for our collective hope," he stressed. The tribute ended with the reading of the poem "Silencio", by Octavio Paz, followed by a minute of silence.

Tortuga boba loggerhead turtle fails to lay eggs on Playa de Eurovosa, La Manga Ireland put brakes on easing lockdown amid Covid-19 spread

By Andrew Atkinson An adult Tortuga boba loggerhead turtle came ashore on the beach Eurovosa in La Manga on July 11 - but unfortunately did not lay any eggs. July is the peak time of year that the Tortuga boba come ashore from the Mediterranean sea. There are areas in Spain where centres are set up, to help them survive, via incubation. In 2019 the first eggs in over a century were hatched after being placed in incubation and are at present at the Marine Agriculture Centre in San Pedro del Pinatar and the Centro Oceanografico in Valencia. Twenty one turtles are scheduled to be released into the Mediterranean sea, once they are deemed big enough for survival. The latest sighting involved a female adult coming ashore in La Manga del Mar Menor. Despite digging up an area of sand it was reported that no eggs were laid. The environmental health services attended the scene after an employee reported the presence of the Tortuga boba loggerhead. Staff from the Centro de Recuperation de Fauna de El Valle - wildlife centre reported the turtle had returned to the sea. Only one per 1,000 eggs survive and the incubator sites increase the number of turtles reaching maturity, releasing them back into the sea at around one year

Over 100 beach assistants resign in less than a month

Less than a month after the Valencian Government hired 1,000 beach assistants to control the Costa Blanca’s beaches in response to the coronavirus pandemic, over a hundred have resigned, more than 10% of the total contracts signed. Reasons seem to be varied with the most common being either the offer of another job or the fact that the place of work is too far from home. However in making the appointments the Agency said that it did explain that mobility would be provincial. That is, that applicants could be assigned places anywhere within their province although location preferences were fulfilled as far as possible. ougie is dead: The kindest, most lovable, and most intelligent animal any of us have ever known is no more. He died quietly and without fuss last week at his home in Westport, County Mayo - at the ripe old age of sixteen and a half years. Dougie’s story is well worth telling. He wasn’t my dog, but we had a very special relationship. I have owned animals and dogs all my life; and I cared deeply for many of those, but like everybody who came across Dougie, I loved that dog. Dougie was born at Christmas time, 2003. He was one of a litter of seven puppies, born to a lovely collie dog, after the mother had a one night stand with a corgi. (Hence his notably short legs) The owner knew that my daughter Olga was thinking of getting a dog. Olga and Conor got first pick and choose what they considered the best-looking. When they returned to collect their new pet, the smallest of the litter ran towards them, looking up, with shining eyes and wagging his tail. Olga said, ‘oh can we have that one instead – he has picked us instead of the other way round’ – and that is how Dougie came to live in ‘Ardygommon’. He was there before any of the three children, but how he loved and indulged each one from the moment they arrived. The new pet never had to be house trained. He never once ‘peeded’ in the house. It was clear from very early on that he had many unbelievable talents. Conor would hit a sponge ball with his hurley, a hundred metres out in the midst of briars and bramble and the ‘bould’ Dougie would go after it, sniff and persevere until he found it , before bouncing back with the ball in his mouth; eyes shining and tail wagging. Because of his short legs, sometimes you would just see the long grass dividing as he ran back and

forth. Dougie didn’t wait to be asked to play; he came with the ball and dropped it between your feet. If there was no ball, he came with an eggsized stone. No matter how far, or how difficult you made the throw, Dougie never failed to return with the object. He loved the beach and he made many friends there. He understood that strangers with children would be wary of him, so he came carrying a stick in his mouth, and dropped it ten feet away. Eventually a child would throw the stick; Dougie retrieved it – and soon every child on the beach would be playing the game– their laughter and squeals of delight music to the dog’s ears. Same thing at the playground in Westport. Dogs are not allowed, so Dougie lay waiting for Jack, Trudy or Ciara, at the other side of the fence. When a ball crossed the fence that was his cue. He retrieved the ball and pushed it back in under the wire. All the children, and their parents got to know and adore this exceptional animal. Oh, and sometimes the school secretary would phone Olga to say that Dougie had gone to school that day and needed to be collected! Olga’s family live on a narrow country lane, off the main road and two miles from the town centre. When I stayed there, Dougie and I had great times together. One morning when we were walking in for the paper, Dougie suddenly dived into a drain and came up with a dirty old tennis ball. I was amazed … how could he have seen it, or sensed it was there? I always put the lead on him before going onto the main road – and by now he had a good run, as I kept throwing the ball ahead. I ‘sold him a dummy’ and when he ran ahead, I put the ball on top of a cement gate pillar to collect on our way back. Coming home, Dougie ran ahead of me, and when I came around a turn, there he was with his front paws up on the pier where I had hidden the ball! Olga and family had moved house when Dougie was five. He adapted immediately – same as he did when he came to visit Pamela and me; but Dougie would often go back and ‘ceili’ with some of the old neighbours! When a former neighbour, a carpenter, was doing a job down the road, Dougie

We are so sad to lose Dougie, but we are better people for having him with us for that length of time. RIP, Dougie … “

Jack (13), Trudy (12) and Ciara (11) are heartbroken. On my visit yesterday, they took me to stand at Dougie’s grave in the garden. There is a large Mayo rock at the head and my grandchildren are going to have a plaque engraved thereon. They are not the only ones who are heartbroken…

Get into the Valencia mood

S

ummer is here and the State of Emergency is over. Although Covid 19 is still out there, we can’t hide away for ever and life goes on. Holidays are now available, and we are allowed to travel, so let’s see where we can go. After being on lockdown and not getting out, even a few days away would be wonderful. So maybe somewhere not too far away would be a place to start this summer.

The new town is where the Cuidad de La Artes y Las Ciencias (Arts and Science) Museums are located, a must when visiting Valencia. These huge, modern, extraordinary buildings stand tall and proud and differ so much from the city’s traditional buildings, they are full of glass and metal and are of obscure shapes.

Spain has so much to offer and those who live here rarely venture out of the area they live in. There are so many cities full of culture and brilliant architecture or you can go to a different coastline to soak up the sun.

Oceanografic has the largest aquarium in Europe. Hours of entertainment just waiting to be had.

Valencia is easy to get to either by car or train. Just be aware, the traffic is so intense in the city with roundabouts with seven lanes, a nightmare to manoeuvre round. What does Valencia offer, a fantastic array of things to see and do. Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain, full of fascinating history. The Cuidad Vella- old town, is a must with Plaza de La Virgen full of cafes and imposing public buildings. It is here you can see the Cathedral of Valencia, it stands majestically, extremely ornate and strikingly beautiful. It is said the Holy Grail is housed here, dating back to the first century AD. You can climb the 207 steps of its spiral staircase, where at the top the scenery is spectacular. Also, the church San Nicolas de Bari was built in 1242 and has recently been restored. It is a sensational, beautiful church, very ornate with cherubs a plenty, all painted in striking colours.

Inside is a fascinating array of hands on activities for adults and children alike.

Mercado de Colon built in 1916 as a market is no longer a market, it is now full of cafes and restaurants plus upmarket and boutique food stores, well worth a visit to wander around. Valencia has it all, as it is a city on the coast, so after hours of taking in the delights of what it has to offer, take a break down by the sea and chill and rest those weary feet, ready for the next day. Many of the beaches have Blue Flags, there is Arenas an idyllic beach with plenty of cafes and restaurants. A quieter one is The Patacona, both are easy to commute to on public transport.

Transportation is not included on the card.

for most children. Also, for children: Gulliver Park in Turia Gardens. In here they have a 70m sculpture with amazing slides. Biopark an innovative Zoo in Central Valencia Paddle surfing in a unique environment just out of the City. Multiadventure Circuit including, ziplines, paintballing and climbing. Toy Soldiers L’lber Museum. It displays 95,000 pieces. The museum is located in an old gothic style palace on Caballeros street. These are just a few activities for children that are on offer.

There is so much here for children as the Science Museum and Oceanographic would be fascinating

The best trip for seeing the City in a weekend is a novel Tuk Tuk. It takes up to 4 people and visits

From 12 euros you can obtain a 7-day Tourist Card, this gives you: Entrance to 20 museums 15% discounts on local attractions Uninterrupted 90-minute bus tour 2 Tapas and 2 beverages. Guidebook and map.

the Old Town, City of Arts and Sciences and the beach area. Sight seeing in a fun way. Not many would think to visit the train station unless using the trains, but Valencia train station is one of the most beautiful in Spain. A spectactular, modern building with a unique style. It was built as a tribute to the importance of the Valencian orange trade. There is a gothic influence, creative mosaic work and intricate iron work with colourful ceramics that are superb. At the end of your stay and you are wanting to buy something authentic as a souvenir. Why not try a wander around the Plaza Redonda or Calle de las Cestas for handmade craft souvenirs.

Fishermen on standby to net Portuguese man'o war By Andrew Atkinson

The mayor has urged the Valenciand Community Ministry of Health to speak out so that we all know "their position on this project."

T

he Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, visited the proposed site for the second Orihuela Costa Health Centre on Wednesday, together with Alberto de Rosa, CEO of Ribera Salud, Hipólito Caro, medical director of Primary Care and Pedro Munuera, the finance director. The land is being made available by the council to the Ministry of Health for a new multipurpose health centre which will be built at a cost of 6 million euro. Covering an area of 10,693 m2, the site is located in Sector PAU-20 "La Ciñuelica", close to Punta Prima. “Residents and visitors to the Coast need much better healthcare with more facilities and a more complete service. Right now that demand is abeing progressed and we are talking to the people who have the responsibility of ensuring that we get this service”, explained Bascuñana.

Department of Health, not only those who fall under the remit of the centre ”.

The CEO of Ribera Salud said that he is "committed to investing 6 million euros to build a multipurpose health centre, with specialties that will improve the care of Orihuela residents who live on the coast."

The mayor has urged the Ministry of Health to speak out so that we all know "their position on this project." He also thanked the Councillor for Health and the CEO of Ribera Health "for their work and willingness to meet a need that we have on the coast, something that I, as mayor, have been asking for since June 2015”.

Future health services would include "many common specialties as well as a rehabilitation service and a high-performance sports medicine area, given that the environment has an important sports and social fabric, which can be used by all patients supported by the

He said that "the next step to is to make this land available to the Ministry of Health and that it now moves forward with this basic and essential project, so that the health service in the Orihuela Costa can better serve the people who live and holiday on the coast”.

Fishermen are on standby following the Portuguese man'o war appearing in the Mediterranean sea area of La Mata that lead to Torrevieja city council employees removing them along the shores as holidaymakers return to the beaches after coronavirus lockdown. Three years ago many beaches were closed along the Costa Blanca south, due to masses of the Portuguese man'o war that has a nasty sting and has seen victims treated in hospital. The annual arrival along the Costa Blanca shores of the Physalia physalis, blue bottle or false jellyfish, are seen in the Mediterranean sea and washed ashore. The Portuguese man'o war reaches the Mediterranean, via the passage of the Strait of Gibraltar. In 2018 masses of Portuguese man'o war led to closure of beaches. In recent years fishermen have been employed by councils in to net the Portuguese man'o war that arrive in Spain by winds, tides and sea currents, visible by their dangling tentacles. At present masses of the Portuguese man'o war haven't arrived along the Costa Blanca south coast - but the fishermen are on standby with nets, if needed.

Passiflora - known as the passionflower or passion vines - are a rampant climber, with approximately 550 different species.

Most passionflowers are evergreen, with dark green leaves that have stunning white and purple flowers.

An ideal cover to grow in Spain, it will quickly cover a wall or fence with their self-clinging tendrils.

The flowers bloom for one day, during July through until October, and are best positioned in full sun to partial shade, in gritty well-drained soil, in a warm sheltered spot. You can grow passionflowers in containers, however, you will need to feed and water, more often. They won’t grow quite as rampant, as those grown

in the ground. Passionflowers are low maintenance and will require pruning after flowering, by cutting back to a healthy bud, to keep them neat and tidy. If your passionflowers grow unruly and needs retraining, you can cut them back in the spring. Used by the native Americas as a mild sedative, it is still used for sleep and anxiety problems, for pain, heart rhythm problems and menopausal symptoms.

Simple Tips for Health as we all age By Lisa Jones

Aging happens, there’s not much we can do about it. What we can do though is put into life at any age some simple daily routines that minimise the effects of aging. Let’s look at these areas; Food - Fluid - Movement Brain - Social - Positivity Food : We want to enjoy our food, and some foods are great for our body and brain health! Eat loads of fruit and vegetables but especially: broccoli, tomatoes, apples, oranges, blueberries, yoghurts, nuts (24 almonds or 7 whole walnuts or 35 peanuts = 5 times a week is all you need) salmon, mackerel, sardines, olive oil instead. My favourites – red wine and dark chocolate!! Let food be thy medicine!! Fluid: Spain is hot and so we need to drink more. Water is a great choice, add some fruit into it for a different taste, or isotonic drinks in the hottest months. Dehydration can lead to fatigue so if you find yourself tired more than usual, add in some more water to your day. If you are thirsty it is a sign of dehydration so try not to get to that point, Movement: Anyone want to run a marathon! Not really… Movement is great for us at any age, and it doesn’t have to be running. Aging generally means our metabolism slows down so we can’t eat as much unless we move more – sorry. It is a fact. And being overweight does create health issues so do try not to carry too much excess weight (please)

Brain: the old brain cells get slower along with the body, but there is good news!! Some foods are fantastic for brain regeneration – the ones above basically! How easy is that!. Puzzles are good too, the bigger one is learning new things, which can be scary as we get older. Learning a new game, reading an article that is outside your usual, watch a conversation then talk about it which links nicely into Social: for any age being social and with others is hugely important for our overall sense of wellbeing. Find an activity you like (a new one!!!) and join in with others as often as you can. Humans are tribal so find your tribe and if you know someone who doesn’t seem to be in one, maybe see if you can bring them into yours? Be careful though that your tribe stays positive… Positivity: A challenge for ALL ages especially at the moment with the virus and the economic state for many younger people. Staying positive isn’t always easy and it is easy for any of us to get dragged down into moaning and complaining and not see the good around us. This doesn’t help our health at all, so to live WELL longer, aim to be more positive than negative, find good things to talk about, quit the gossip, and there is always something to be grateful for – doesn’t always feel that way, but there is. I am grateful to have my musings printed here and that you take the time to read them. I do hope they are helpful – live long and prosper!!!..

Valencian clinics take no chances as they prepare for 2nd wave Municpalities in Valencia are preparing for a second wave of coronavirus with more than a dozen active outbreaks. UK/Ireland flights cut by Ryanair as quarantine continues Ryanair will cut the number of flights it offers between the UK and Ireland from next month in response to what it brands as “defective” quarantine measures on the Emerald Isle. During August and September the lowcost carrier will offer 1,000 fewer flights, or some 200,000 seats, in response to a decision by Irish authorities to quarantine arrivals from the EU. The airline says the decision could mean as many as 100,000 fewer travellers arriving in destinations such as Cork, Shannon, Knock and Kerry during the peak months of the tourism season.

International Habaneras program confirmed The Habaneras will not be held as a competition, but purely as a tribute to the Habanera, the hallmark of the Torrevieja musical tradition. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has announced details of the International of Habaneras and Polyphony of Torreviejaevent that will celebrate its 66th edition this week. As always, the performances will be held in the Eras de la Sal, but at a new time - of 10:30 p.m. and over just four evenings. Dolón said that, despite all the difficulties, hygienic-sanitary measures and the time constraints, it has been possible to organise a top class program for this event that, although it will not be a competition, it will be held as a tribute to the Habanera, the hallmark of the Torrevieja musical tradition. There will be four choirs with a maximum of 25 members, each of whom will be separated by a distance of 1.5 to 2 metres. In addition there will be ten soloists accompanied by both piano and the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, which will fill the programming with content .

On the 23rd, the sopranos Pepa Maciá and María Maciá and the baritone Pablo López, will perform. They will be accompanied on the piano by Selena Cancino. The choral performance will be carried out by the Ad Libitum Chamber Choir of the Choir School of Quart de Poblet. On Friday the 24th, the sopranos winner of the Competition, Luca Espinosa and Mireia Dolç and the tenor José Manuel Delicado, will perform. The piano accompaniment will be by Jorge Carrasco. The evening will be closed by the Vokal Ars Choir. The event will close on Saturday 25 with a great gala of lyrical soloists from Torrevieja and the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra. The sopranos, Cora Sánchez and Concepción PérezBoj and the tenors Francisco Moreno and Alberto Ballesta will alternate for this very special closing ceremony. Hygiene and safety measures

On Wednesday 22 July at 10:30 p.m. the Contest will begin with the performance from the Orfeón de Torrevieja, followed by the Madrid Youth Choir, a group that has won the public prize on two occasions (2016 and 2019), as well as the National City of Torrevieja prize last year.

The use of face masks by all members of the public and other personell will be mandatory from the moment they access the Eras de la Sal, where they will also have their temperature taken and, in case of being above the normal parameters, access will not be allowed.

Thursday and Friday evenings will have a similar format of winning singers and finalists from the International Competition of Habaneras for Soloists followed by a choral performance.

There will also be hydroalcoholic gel for hand disinfection, as well as information on the public address system to avoid crowds and directions of transit will be clearly displayed.

To compensate for this lack of capacity, the Contest will be broadcast live on the Board's website www.habaneras.org, and also on Torrevieja Television and Vega Baja Television. Likewise, the four evenings will be recorded in full for a special program that will be broadcast by Spanish Television through La 2 and its International Channel. The sale of tickets and passes will take place until July 21 at the offices of the Board of Trustees, and then from the 22nd, at the box office in Plaza Miguel Hernández. There is also the option to book the seats by phone. Opening hours and prices can be found on the website: www.habaneras.org.

Brittany Fallon, twin-sister to top jockey Cieron, was brought to tears after her brother landed Europe's top sprint July Cup on at Newmarket on July 11.

Trainers Aidan O’Brien and son disciplined Trainers Aidan O’Brien and his son Donnacha have been fined and banned by the IRHB from attending racecourses - for breaches of anti-Covid 19 protocols amid the resumption of racing in June. Both were fined €2,500 - £2,200 - and banned from attending meetings for two weeks, for breaching the rules on Irish 2,000 Guineas day at The Curragh on June 12, only days after racing resumed in Ireland.

"I'm crying - happy tears - I'm so proud," said Brittany. "It was a big day, it being my first ride in a Group 1," said 2019 Apprentice champion Flat jockey Cieron. "I thought Oxted had a big chance." said the youngster, who walked the course, prior to the race, with his legendary six times former champion jockey father Kieran. Cieron, who lives with his dad, having grew up with his mother Julie in Wigan, said: "My dad has

Former champion Flat jockey Jamie Spencer set to return

Former champion Flat jockey Jamie Spencer has been given the go-ahead to return to race-riding following a long spell on the sidelines, having broke his hip on the gallops. "It has been a long three months since I suffered my injury on April 17. I'm delighted to say that I passed all the relevant tests and I have been cleared to return," said Spencer. County Tipperary born Spencer, 40, sustained injury in mid-April in Newmarket - after a horse spooked and slipped over.

It is understood the suspensions would be reciprocated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) in the event that either trainer applied to attend a racecourse in Britain during their period of suspension in Ireland. It is understood that the pair failed to enter The Curragh through the designated screening area on raceday.

Writing in his Unibet blog, Spencer added: "Dr Jerry Hill, the BHA’s chief medical adviser, is happy for me to book rides as of now." "I have been very fortunate that I have had a great team advising and encouraging me from day one of the injury," said Spencer.

Sports' huge boost amid COVID-19 with go-ahead for spectators return

By Andr ew Atkinson

Sports have been given a huge boost amid COVID-19 lockdown with the UK Government giving the go-ahead for spectators to return to events at racing, snooker and cricket, in 'test case' pilot events.

"We welcome the fact that horseracing is to be selected as one of the pilot events to welcome back crowds and my team and I acknowledge the great responsibility upon us," said Racecourse Association chief executive David Armstrong. "Crowds bring a wonderful atmosphere to a raceday and many businesses associated with racecourses are reliant upon them. "I sincerely hope that all involved enjoy their day. Our focus now turns to supporting the Goodwood team, in what is a landmark day for the sport," added Armstrong. The UK government plans to use the pilot events scheme to stresstest their 'Stage-5' guidance on the return of spectators to elite sports events.

It’s official! We’re back at Las Ramblas as of next Wednesday.

"For months millions of us have felt the void of being unable to go to the match to support our team or attend a top-class sporting event. "I am pleased that we are now able to move forward - with a plan to help venues safely reopen their doors to fans. "I recognise that not every sport, team or club has the benefit of huge commercial revenue, and it is often their dedicated fans that are the lifeblood which helps keep them going. "By working closely with sports and medical experts, these pilots will help ensure the safe return of fans to stadia. "Although it will remain some time before venues are full to capacity, this is a major step in the right direction for the resumption of live spectator sport across the country," said Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston. "We are delighted that the Qatar Goodwood Festival has been selected as a pilot event for the return of crowds. "It marks an important day for the sports industry," said Adam Waterworth, sport managing director at the Goodwood Estate.

San Miguel Golf Society at El Plantio, July 15th Quite some time since SMGS visited El Plantio, a course that lost favour with the membership due to never quite knowing what condition you would find it in. Today, with 27 players present, it was some way back to its best (though with a way to go

yet) and, given recent trying times for management and ground staff, in very acceptable condition. A shortage of buggies for those going out late was the only gripe, though delay for the last three 4-balls was not too long. However, panic about missing tee times, immediate loss of a hole on the group in front and trying to catch up, made things feel a bit rushed for those concerned. Nearest the pins were reintroduced and, as is normal, lower handicappers eclipsed those with bigger numbers to their name (this time 3

to 1). Spencer Andrews got greedy and took two of the four available, Darren Strugnell and Norman Padmore the others. Spencer and Norman’s accuracy clearly wasn’t just confined to the par threes, both taking first prize in their respective categories. A special mention for the last group out, where Mike Jordan (60 years old) was the babe in the group of Charles Jones (85), Norman McBride (84) and Keith Stevenson (76). The latter three are all going strong, Mike we are not so sure about! The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following:Gold Category: 4th John Osborne (30 points), 3rd David Rowe (31), 2nd Phil de Lacy (33), 1st Spencer Andrews (35) Silver Category: 4th Brian Mulligan (29 points), 3rd Dave Bishop (30), 2nd Keith Little (34), 1st Norman Padmore (35) SMGS would like to thank El Plantio staff for making the day possible. Next week we will be at Vistabella. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 711 032 859.

Goodwood races has been given permission to allow 5,000 spectators attend on August 1, the final day of the Qatar Glorious Goodwood Festival meeting.

Torrevieja exemption for use of sports facilities The Department for sports in Torrevieja has said that all city clubs will be exempted until December from the payment for the use of the facilities at the Sports City, due to the loss of training caused by COVID-19 during the 201920 season. All activities were suspended by the mayor of 12 March in accordance with government legislation. The Sports City was closed and activities were brought to a halt, but now they have been reopened the council is introducing the measure as recompense to clubs for the disruption caused. Clubs must contact the Sports Department if they wish to use of the facilities in the Sports City, providing the schedules and details of the sports men and women who will train at the municipal facilities.

Farrell's future at relegated Saracens England captain and British & Irish Lion Owen Farrell, who made his debut for Saracens in 2008 after graduating from the Academy, has committed his future to the club. Fly-half Farrell, 28, has agreed to remain at Saracens - despite being relegated from the Premiership for offences related to breaches of salary cap rules. "The club means a lot to me. I've been here a long, long time now," said Farrell. "Most of the senior players are in a similar position. They'd do anything to put us in the best position possible and that was telling during the tough times this year. I'm sure that will be the case going forward." Farrell and England international and Saracens teammates Elliot Daly, Mako Vunipola and Jamie George have also signed new contracts, along with Scotland winger Sean Maitland. "Owen has grown up at Saracens, from a teenager in our Academy to a central figure in English rugby. "His drive to improve is relentless, pushing everyone in the organisation, players and staff. Saracens would not be the club it is without Owen. "Off the field he is a grounded family man, who cares deeply about the club and the people here. We are delighted he has committed his long-term future to Saracens," said Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall.

McCafferty's Golf Society at Campoamor 14th July 21 of us made the short trip to Campoamor, which was a brand-new course for us to play. We did find the course in quite good condition, but slight disappointment that many of the greens on the back nine were sanded. We also found the greens on the slow side, but then again, many prefer a slower green as opposed to the La Finca type of quickness! Back at the pub, we were welcomed by Kieron Fenton's smiling face (or did he have constipation?) and after the presentation, the usual bowls of FFS (Fenton's Famous Stew). The scores on the doors were quite decent considering the slowness of the greens and the length of the course, and it is long (just over 6,100 metres from the Yellow Plates, and on par with La Finca), but quite a few managed to hit the 30-point marker.

Carp-R-Us Carp-R-Us fished their final match before taking a break for the Summer at El Bosquet. This was the annual Pairs Cup match and the winning pair were Alan Priest and Roy Dainty. Alan fished feeder with maggots on peg 12 to weigh in 17.72kg, which was also the best individual weight on the day by a long way, Roy backing him up with

4.85kg from peg 5. Runners-up were Alan Smith and Terry Screen. In general pegs 1 - 10 fished poorly and there were two dry nets in this section, whilst 11 – 16 fished better although for some reason the carp were reluctant to show and mainly mullet were caught. We were in fact told that he chipped in from 40 odd yards, but as we all say, "There are no pictures on the scorecard", it just shows he does live up to his nickname. Onto the main awards and in the Silver Division, five players achieved the 30-point target and the CBNC went to Keith Crossan with 31 points. The Runner-up in the Silver Division was ViceCaptain Andy Brown, who had the same score as Keith but his 17 on the back-nine secured him his 'brownie'. Just one point ahead of Andy was the current record holder of "Happy Golfer" awards, Mickie Coady who's 32 points was enough to take the Silver Division's winner's purse. The Gold lads didn't score as well as their Silver counterparts, but it still took 31 points to give Mick Phelan the CBNC non-award and on the same score, but with a better back six, the runner-up in Gold was John Saunders. The winner of the Gold only needed 33 points and that meant a surprised Brian Kiernan stepped up to take the winner's purse in the Gold Division. Try to eat something when playing because you will use energy as your body works hard to keep you cool. If you get the chance on the way around take the opportunity to wait in the shade but don’t hold up play when doing this. Although you may feel weary keep up with the group in front and remember the quicker you play the less time you will be exposed to the sun and high temperatures.

Avoid drinking alcohol which de-hydrates you more quickly.

If you follow these few simple steps you will avoid problems resulting from playing golf in extreme weather conditions in the hot summer months.

Spectators unlikely in Spain until next season Spain's health minister has expressed doubt about the prospect of spectators returning to football stadiums in September due to the threat of a resurgence in COVID-19.

ON THE ROPES

The government's department for sport and organising body La Liga had hoped to let fans back into stadiums at a reduced capacity when the new season starts in September, increasing to 50% in November before full capacity returned in January.

Image Twitter: “It wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of all the men and women who helped keep the environment safe and clean for our fighters,” FRANK WARREN.

Yet a spike in infections since Spain lifted a national state of emergency in June has led some regions to impose localised lockdowns and limit activities, threatening the return to normality.

Quote: 'With the easing of coronavirus restrictions and the label of new normal, boxing promoter Frank Warren says there is nothing 'normal' about this new reality'. TYSON Fury could be set to face a huge wage cut ahead the two-time heavyweight world champion's return to the ring, due to the coronavirus situation. 'Gypsy King' Fury, who defeated Deontay Wilder in February, fighting for a multi-million pounds purse, is currently KO'd into earning future bumper pay packets, as all sports are currently behind closed doors. Fury and Wilder are eyeing a trilogy fight in December in the wake of Fury cleared by the WBC over alleged glove tampering against Wilder, who he drew against in 2018, and defeated in seven rounds in Las Vegas in February. Boxing returned on July 10, the first show since the coronavirus shutdown, behind closed doors at BT Sport Studio. Fighters were in isolation for days before the fight, amid COVID19 health and safety guidelines. British super-bantamweight champion Brad Foster and James Beech junior

"To be honest, I don't see it, given the reality we are in," health minister Illa said.

entered the ring, with both fighters tested for coronavirus in recent weeks and tested twice during fight week. They were also deemed to remain in a booked hotel. The five bouts were overseen by two masked referees, who showered between bouts. The announcer was outside the ring. Top boxing promoter Frank Warren says boxing will lose money, as will all sports, with no spectators allowed in venues. Fighters face COVID-19 testing, isolation, and rings must be cleaned thoroughly by specialised companies,

prior to future events. Referees must shower between bouts. Boxing's financial backing comes from ticket sales, sponsors and payper-view tv revenue. Warren says boxers like Fury cannot be out of the ring for a year and that big decisions are going to have to be made, amid COVID-19. Big money venues of Saudi Arabia and Las Vegas have been a huge purse for boxers, but without spectators that has currently changed. Between 60%-70% of revenues come outside ticket sales - and boxing's

coronavirus affected future has left a huge gap to be filled. Warren pointed to the return of football in June, behind closed doors, something that lacked his attention. Although on the ropes, Warren hasn't thrown in the towel of spectators returning in October for the rescheduled fight between Daniel Dubois against Joe Joyce: "Hopefully it will be in front of a live crowd," said Warren. With the easing of coronavirus restrictions and the label of the 'new normal' tag, Warren punched: "There is nothing normal about this new reality."

ON THE BALL WITH VAZ Quote: 'The family is the base of your life. I try to enjoy them, whenever I can, due to the training, the matches and work'.

"It was a big decision to make, but the right one," said Vazquinho, who helped Racing San Miguel finish third in the coronavirus-hit 2019-20 season.

Chief sports editor Andrew Atkinson talks exclusively to Racing San Miguel, Brazilian born football star Vazquinho.

Fixtures were postponed in March, due to health and safety concerns amid COVID-19 lockdown, that saw the FFCV cancel the campaign, due to the ongoing situation.

Family man Vazquinho - Vaz - puts his wife and two children at the front of his life as a football star in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8. "Of course, the family is the base of your life," said striker Vazquinho, who lives in Los Montesinos in the Vega Baja region of the Costa Blanca south.

"The coronavirus stopped us, when we were getting better as the season progressed. We knew what was ahead and were ready to face it," said Vazquinho. "What a shame - but the project continues going into the 2020-21 season," said Vazquinho.

"I try to enjoy them, whenever I can, due to the training, the matches and work, because of the little time I have dedicated to them," said Vazquinho.

After his first season at Racing San Miguel, Vazquinho has signed a new contract for the forthcoming campaign, under manager Willy.

Vazquinho has been part of the football scene for a long time, departing CD Montesinos last year, ending his third spell at the club.

"I renewed my contract with Racing de San Miguel, because my first year has been very good," said Vazquinho. "That was despite the fact that I start-

ed the season injured and the management bet on me, along with my coach Willy," said Vazquinho.

“Jayme Fonseca is a impresario who, in his day bet on me – and other players – in my town.

"Willy has brought in a young network, with experienced players and has clear ideas," said Vazquinho.

“He is a man with a big heart – who tries to look after the poor classes. Today he is named as a candidate for Mayor of a town in Europe,” said Vazquinho.

"After the first season my feeling was very good," added Vazquinho. Away from football, Vazquinho remains in touch with friend Jayme Fonesca, who is running for Mayor:

“And I know that if he wins, Jayme will help many poor children, who will play soccer, like me,” added Vazquinho.

"Bale is in the headlines again for pretending to sleep in the stands when he found out he was going to be an unused substitute against Granada," Berbatov wrote. "When I saw it, I couldn't believe it. I watched him put his mask over his eyes and pretend to be asleep. I cannot support that. It is unprofessional and disrespectful to Real Madrid. His reaction is going too far. "Madrid need to find a solution to the Bale saga. It's not good for Bale or the team and it is bad publicity”.

Real Madrid win LaLiga with battling victory over Villarreal Real Madrid sealed their 34th LaLiga title on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Villarreal at a sweltering Alfredo di Stefano in the suburbs of Madrid. Zidane’s side have been irresistibly unspectacular since the return of football and it was in that same style that they won their 10th game in a row and marched to another trophy under their French manager. Zidane, often almost accused of having some secret formula for success that he refuses to divulge, has done it again.

Levante UD, one of the country’s leading women's football teams, has signed two players from the CFF Uryula team Alevín: the Oriolan girls Rocío Roselló Pastor and Paula Fernández Pardo. Next season Rocío will play in the Infantil A of the granota club while Paula will do the same in the Alevín A Top scorer Rocío is 12 years of age while midfielder Pardo is just 10 years old. Both are said to have promising futures. The girls had previously been selected for the Valencian Women's Under-12 Team, being chosen from almost 300 players across the entire Community

Meanwhile Barcelona’s Leo Messi spoke following Thursdays home defeat to Osasuna which saw Barcelona surrender the league title with the Argentine asking for changes to be made ahead of the resumption of the Champions League in August. “I'm telling you that if we continue in this manner, we will not progress in the Champions League as we weren't good enough to retain the LaLiga title. We're going to need to change plenty if we want to deliver and we also need to take a long hard look at ourselves. We lost the title due to our own shortcomings and not because of what Real Madrid did as many people are claiming". The words from the Barcelona captain would appear to be directed at coach Setien.

It is based on grassroots football comprising of over 500 players of all age groups across it’s 25 teams. It has modest resources but it allows players to play in the town where they live and to progress through the age groups and the club ranks up to the senior team which plays in the Valencia Regional League. During recent weeks the club has spoken to supporters and enthusiasts, as well as to many International residents across the town, to whom it has outlined it’s plans for the coming season. "El Torrevieja C.F. belongs to everyone”, a phrase that the club has adopted and which it uses as it’s motto within the sports community.

The Alevin C team are promoted having won their Regional League

There are many people who live in Torrevieja with a great deal of knowledge and influence, fans who have always had the best interests of their “local” club at heart. Unfortunately through a series of misfortunes, football in the city has not done well but now

Torrevieja CF is ready to receive all fans with open arms, especially those international football fans, who I will personally welcome to the club. I was born in Germany 52 years ago so I know very well what it means to live outside your country of origin and mixed feelings that usually occur. Here in Torrevieja we are a hospitable group and Torrevieja CF is a non-profit sports association which has the aim of promoting football among young people in the community in order that they can progress locally in the sport that they enjoy. We are a club with a growing economic structure, and a social base of families, including 500 players enrolled in its 25 base teams, and next year we celebrate our half centenary with 50 years since we were first formed. We would love to see you either involved with the base organisation or supporting our senior team in the coming season, as we strive once again to put some pride back into that once great name of Torrevieja CF.
